4-3 for the first time 1996 - We played out a real humdinger with Newcastle United at Anfield. Robbie Fowler put us ahead after two minutes, but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after one of Les Ferdinand’s six strikes past us and a David Ginola goal. Robbie Fowler levelled the scores with his 22nd strike in his last 21 outings, but Faustino Asprilla put the visitors ahead again two minutes later. Stan Collymore tied the match once more, and then grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner right at the death, in a match later voted the best in the Premiership’s first decade. A new record captur

Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen became England’s youngest ever player to reach fifty caps. He captained the side, bagging a brace, including a penalty, as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in a Euro 2004 qualifier at the Riverside Stadium. Steven Gerrard and ex-red David James also played. Owen also became England’s youngest ever captain for a competitive international. On the same day, Vladimír Šmicer netted as the Czech Republic thumped Moldova 5-0 in another qualifier in Olomouc, with clubmate Milan Baroš also playing. Future red Robbie Keane struck as the Republic of Ireland

He was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour’ from both teams. Heading to Istanbul 2005 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final. The evening was only slightly spoiled by Xabi Alonso’s unwarranted booking that would rule him out of the Anfield return. Steven Gerrard had an emergency dental operation on the morning of the game. Forward departures 1997 - John Barnes played his 407th and final reds game as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Jamie Redknapp netting our goal late on. He has so far struck 22 times in 178 reds games, coming off the bench as we claimed the FIFA Club World Cup, while also being in the matchday squads as we claimed the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup last year, an

Cardiff glory once more 2006 - We claimed the FA Cup for the seventh time, in a game dubbed the ‘Gerrard Final’ after Steven Gerrard struck two stupendous shots. We went 2-0 down to West Ham United through a Jamie Carragher own goal followed by a Pepe Reina fumble that Dean Ashton profited from. Djibril Cissé gave us hope before half-time with Gerrard equalising after the break, his 24th goal in his 79th and final reds outing. Off to Istanbul 2005 - We headed towards our sixth European Cup Final after seeing Chelsea off in the Semi-final. Luis García converted the only goal of the tie four minutes into the second leg, with the referee clearly indicating that the ball had indeed crossed the line, despite Chelsea protests. The Anfield atmosphere remained white hot, with many supporters considering this to be the famous old ground’s greatest ever night as the reds held out for victory. Hearts were in mouths when six minutes of injury time were conjured up, especially when Eidur Gudjohnsen shot past the post deep into
