Sam’s bow 1900 - Forward Sam Raybould made his reds debut as a Hugh Morgan brace condemned West Bromwich Albion to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield, his final goals for the club. Raybould went on to net 130 times in 226 reds games, becoming the first player to bag a hundred League goals for the club. Arrivals from Spain 2010 – Winger Maxi Rodríguez signed for free from Club Atlético de Madrid. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings before returning to Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina in July 2012. 2005 - Fernando Morientes signed from Real Madrid for £6.3m. He netted just twelve goals in 61 reds games, helping us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup before moving on to Valencia in July 2006, where he regained his scoring touch. Birth and death 1984 - Tommy Younger died. He made 127 appearances in our goal after signing from Hibernian for £9,000 in June 1956, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, later becoming the President of the Scottish FA. 1876 – Half-back Barney Battles was born in Springburn, Glasgow. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. The legend returns 2003 - Ian Rush returned to Liverpool as a part-time specialist striking coach, a role he only occupied for around a year. His club record 346 strikes in 660 games had helped us to five League titles, the European Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the Screen Sport Super Cup. Ablett across the park 1992 - Gary Ablett was sold to Everton for £750,000 after one goal in 147 games for the reds. He had helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield and later won a second FA Cup during his time at Goodison. Two-ton Martin 2013 – Slovakian centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-1 at Manchester United. Robin van Persie scored one of his seven goals past us before Nemanja Vidić deflected in a Patrice Evra header from a free-kick, with substitute Daniel Sturridge nabbing our consolation. Steven’s bow 2016 - Centre-half Steven Caulker made his reds bow in our 3-3 draw with Arsenal at Anfield. Roberto Firmino and Olivier Giroud each bagged a brace, with the latter grabbing two of his eight past us to date, with Aaron Ramsey also on target. Joe Allen struck a stoppage time equaliser. Cup despair 1993 - Second Division Bolton Wanderers knocked us out of the FA Cup at Anfield, winning our Third Round replay 2-0. John McGinlay nodded the visitors in front inside three minutes, with Andy Walker scoring the second with his head late on. Robbie Fowler made the bench for the first time, while Michael Thomas was ruled out for the rest of the season after snapping an Achilles tendon. 2010 – We were dumped out of the Cup in another replay at the same stage, as Reading won 2-1 at Anfield. A Ryan Bertrand own goal put us in front on the stroke of half time, but the Championship strugglers equalised at the death after Yossi Benayoun gave away a penalty converted by Gylfi Sigurðsson, the first of his five goals against us to date, with both Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard having to be withdrawn early due to injuries. Cup milestones 1912 - Outside-right Arthur Goddard appeared in his 23rd consecutive FA Cup match for the reds as a Jack Parkinson goal gave us a First Round home win over Leyton. Unfortunately, we went out at Fulham at the next hurdle. 1926 – We played our hundredth FA Cup match, when a Dick Forshaw goal was enough to hand us victory over Southampton in a Third Round replay at Anfield. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at the next hurdle at Fulham. Seeing off the Villa 2001 - A brace from Danny Murphy and an unstoppable shot past ex-red David James from Steven Gerrard condemned Aston Villa to a 3-0 defeat at Villa Park, with their new signing Juan Pablo Angel watching from the stands. Jari Litmanen made his first reds start in this game. Spot-kick failures 1906 – Alf West had a penalty saved in each half as we beat Leicester Fosse 2-1 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Sam Raybould and Arthur Goddard netted for the reds, with Billy Bannister also failing to convert a spot-kick for the visitors. Debuting 1951 – Forward Don Woan played the first of just two reds games as we won 2-1 at Derby County in a top-flight encounter. Inside-forward Jack Haigh bagged his first reds goal with Billy Liddell also on target as we completed our first League double over the Rams since April 1929. Rescuing a point at Highbury 2002 - John Arne Riise latched onto a sensational long pass from Steven Gerrard to strike past Stuart Taylor in front of the North Bank to hand us a 1-1 draw, after Freddie Ljungberg had opened the scoring for Arsenal. 1923 - We also drew with the Gunners, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield in the First Round of the FA Cup. We won the replay, but went out in the Third Round at home to Sheffield United. Hitting five 1962 - We saw off Norwich City at Anfield by the odd goal in nine on our way to the Second Division championship. Alan A’Court netted in addition to braces from both Jimmy Melia and Roger Hunt. Terry Allcock bagged a treble for the Canaries, the most recent player to score a hat-trick at Anfield and still end up on the losing side, with Jimmy Conway also on target as right-back John Molyneux played his 249th and last game for the club. 1894 - We trounced Rotherham Town 5-1 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture at Anfield, having won 4-1 in the reverse fixture the previous week. David Henderson and Harry Bradshaw both netted braces, with Hugh McQueen also on target. Reds in charge 2006 - Steve Staunton was appointed Manager of the Republic of Ireland. He led them to just six victories in his seventeen games in charge. Fellow ex-red Kevin MacDonald was appointed as one of his coaches at the same time. Personal awards 2006 - Rafael Benítez was named Barclays Manager of the Month for the second month running, after four League wins out of four in December. 2010 – Standard de Liège forward Milan Jovanović was named Jupiler League Player of the Year in Belgium. On the move 2006 - Don Hutchison joined Coventry City on a free transfer from Millwall after a successful loan spell. He had struck twice in fourteen games for the Lions and grabbed four goals in forty outings for the Sky Blues before being struck down by serious injury. 2011 – Reserves forward Nathan Eccleston joined Charlton Athletic on loan. He netted three times in 21 outings for the Addicks. 2015 – Ex-reds reserves forward Paul Jewell resigned as Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion, just seven days after being appointed, having already been asked to take a pay cut. 2017 – Left-back Joe Maguire moved on to Fleetwood Town, so far making nine senior appearances for the Cod Army. 2020 – Centre-half Nathaniel Phillips re-joined VfB Stuttgart on loan after making one senior appearance and two outings on the bench in between spells in Germany. On the same day, ex-reds keeper Pepe Reina moved to Aston Villa until the end of the season. Tweet tweet 2011 - Ryan Babel admitted an FA charge for improper conduct relating to tweeting about referee Howard Webb after the recent FA Cup defeat at Manchester United. Other reds games 2007 – We won 3-0 at Watford, with all the goals coming from substitutes. Peter Crouch netted twice with Craig Bellamy also on target. 1996 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, with Ian Rush grabbing a late leveller from off the bench. 1990 – Luton Town left Anfield with a share of the spoils as the game ended 2-2, with John Barnes opening the scoring with a direct free-kick. Goals from Kingsley Black and Kurt Nogan put the Hatters in front momentarily, before Steve Nicol headed in an equaliser. 1973 – We shared a goalless draw with Burnley in our FA Cup Third Round encounter at Turf Moor. We won at the second attempt, but fell to Manchester City at the next hurdle. 1934 – Gordon Hodgson netted as Fulham drew 1-1 at Anfield in another Third Round tie, with Jack Lambert equalising with the last of his seven goals against the reds. We won the replay, but went out to Bolton Wanderers in the Fifth Round. For continents 1996 - Future red Rigobert Song played as Cameroon lost 3-0 to host nation South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Johannesburg. 2000 - Song played in a goalless friendly draw in Senegal. 2010 – Now having left the reds, he featured again in a 1-0 defeat to Gabon in a Finals game in Angola. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré represented the Ivory Coast as they beat Tunisia 2-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi. 2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva captained Brazil Under-20’s as they beat Bolivia 3-0 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Paraguay, despite having a man sent off. 2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino played for Japan as they beat Oman 1-0 in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Abu Dhabi.

Tom takes charge 1896 - Tom Watson was appointed as reds boss, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Happy McBirthday 1891 - Legendary left-back Donald McKinlay was born in Newton, Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Newton Villa in January 1910, making 434 appearances before joining Prescot Cables in July 1929. He scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. Off on loan 2008 – Two young centre-backs left the club to go out on loan. Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City, turning out 49 times as they claimed the League One title before signing on permanently in April 2009. Meanwhile, Godwin Antwi only played seven games for Tranmere Rovers, later joining Hereford United for another loan spell before leaving the reds for good for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark in December 2009. Red bows 2012 – Full-back Ryan McLaughlin played his first reds game as we lost 2-1 to Roma in a friendly at the Fenway Park baseball stadium in Boston on our North American tour, with Charlie Adam on target. 1972 - Peter Cormack made his first appearance as we won 2-0 at Chester in a game played behind closed doors. Brian Hall and Steve Heighway struck the goals. Anfield departures 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson was sold to Port Vale for £1,700. He had struck eleven times in 133 reds games since his arrival in November 1951 from Leyton Orient for £6,500 plus forward Don Woan. 1998 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo left Anfield for Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He netted four times in 41 games for the Eagles, before joining Italian side Ternana two years later. 2016 – Welsh midfielder Joe Allen was sold to Stoke City for £13m after seven goals in 132 reds games since his £15m arrival from Swansea City in August 2012. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of England, under Sam Allardyce. Signing on 1892 – Keeper Billy McOwen arrived from Darwen. He kept eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances, helping us to claim the Second Division title. He left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool in July 1894, as well as returning to his dentistry career. New stadium plans 2007 - New designs for the new stadium in Stanley Park were unveiled, coinciding with the submission of the official planning application to Liverpool City Council. This was to be a 60,000-seater stadium, with 18,000 in the Kop. However, this project has since been firmly shelved. Stevie honoured 2008 - Steven Gerrard was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University. The reds go broadband 2000 - It was announced that Granada Media and Liverpool FC had agreed to form a new joint venture company, Liverpool FC Broadband, to exploit our new-media and commercial rights, including delayed online coverage of Premiership matches. God the champion 1993 - Robbie Fowler helped England Under-18’s to claim the European Championships for the ninth and final time to date. Tottenham Hotspur’s Darren Caskey struck the only goal of the game against Turkey at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with the England side also including future stars such as Sol Campbell, Julian Joachim, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. Javier misses out 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina lost the Copa América Final. The game in Lima ended 2-2, but Brazil won the penalty shoot-out 4-2. Red farewells 1900 - James Kelso committed suicide back in his native Scotland, aged just 29. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892. 1938 – Inside-forward Willie Michael died. He joined the reds from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, scoring five times in 23 reds games before returning to Tynecastle in May 1897. A new case for Jimmy 1991 - Ex-reds midfield dynamo Jimmy Case joined Third Division Bournemouth from Southampton on a free transfer. He was a virtual ever-present in his one season with the Cherries, before joining Halifax Town on a free transfer in May 1992. Young future reds on target 2002 - Fernando Torres bagged a brace as Spain Under-19’s reached the Final of the European Championships in Norway, courtesy of their 3-2 defeat of Slovakia in Drammen. 2003 – Daniel Agger converted a penalty for Denmark Under-20’s as they lost a shoot-out 5-4 to the USA in the NI Milk Cup third place play-off in Northern Ireland, after the match had ended 1-1. Partridge claims bronze 1999 - Richie Partridge featured as the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s beat Greece 1-0 in Sweden to claim third place in the European Championship Finals. 1996 - Michael Owen played in the same tournament as England drew 1-1 with Italy in a group game France, with Gérard Houllier taking charge of France, with Christian Damiano as they beat Portugal 1-0. On the move 1927 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Stenhousemuir from Airdrieonians, having struck five times in eight League games for the Diamonds. 1996 - Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones joined Stockport County from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £60,000. He appeared 66 times for County before following boss Dave Jones to Southampton for £900,000 a year later. 2011 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Leeds United for the first time from Preston North End, playing 38 times. He became captain that season, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in July 2012. 2017 – Diogo Jota joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, netting eighteen times in 46 games before signing on permanently in July 2018 for a reported €14m. 2018 – Ex-reds forward Jerome Sinclair joined Sunderland on loan from Watford, scoring twice in nineteen games for the Black Cats. Also in international action 1925 - Forward Jimmy Walsh appeared for an England side that beat Australia 2-0 in an FA Tour game in Melbourne. 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played in the Olympics for Israel as they lost 4-1 to Brazil in the Quarter-final in Toronto. 1986 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye featured for Norway Under-16’s as they shared a goalless draw with Finland in a tournament game in Hungary. 2014 – Future red Marko Grujić played as Serbia Under-19’s beat Bulgaria 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Hungary.
