Luis born 1987 – Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez was born in Salto. He signed from Ajax for a club record fee of up to €26.5m in January 2011 and bagged an impressive 82 goals in 133 dazzling reds outings. He helped us to claim the League Cup before joining Barcelona for a club record £75m in July 2014. Derby disappointments We have faced our nearest neighbours twice on this day in history, without tasting victory. 1995 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield in the Premiership, with ex-red David Burrows somewhat fortunate to stay on the pitch after hacking down Robbie Fowler having already been booked. 1981 - We lost 2-1 at Goodison in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with substitute Jimmy Case netting our consolation, his 46th and final reds goal. Peter Eastoe netted the last of his four goals against the reds, with Imre Varadi also on target. Cup victory 2004 - A Bruno Cheyrou brace, his final reds goals, took us past Newcastle United in the FA Cup Fourth Round at a noisy Anfield, as we won 2-1 with Laurent Robert scoring for the visitors. Unfortunately, we went out to Portsmouth in the next round. 1987 - We also beat the Geordies in L4 with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush securing a 2-0 League victory as Alan Hansen played his 500th reds game while John Wark reached a century of outings for the club. 1959 - Fred Morris bagged a brace as we drew 2-2 with them in a friendly at Anfield. The Kop’s inspiration 1900 - The battle of Spion Kop took place, during the Boer War. It is from this battle, at which many British soldiers died including 320 Lancashire Fusiliers, that the Kop at Anfield, and several other grounds, gets its name. If you like Croatian players, we’ve got Bišcan at our club 2001 - Igor Bišcan scored his first reds goal as we thumped Crystal Palace 5-0 at Anfield to progress to the Worthington Cup Final, 6-2 on aggregate. Most recently 2021 – We lost 3-2 behind closed doors at Manchester United in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, with Mohamed Salah bagging a brace. We won the replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. Off the mark 1914 – Forward Bob McDougall scored on his reds debut, the only goal of the game at West Bromwich Albion, and his only strike for us. Forward Jimmy Nicholl made the first of his 59 appearances for the reds. 1920 - Left-half Tom Bromilow grabbed the first of his eleven reds goals as we won 3-0 at Bolton Wanderers, with Billy Lacey and Tom Miller also scoring. Red farewells 1999 – Steve Harkness and Jason McAteer both played their 139th and final reds games in our cruel 2-1 defeat at Manchester United in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Michael Owen gave us an early lead, but United struck twice in the dying minutes, through one of Dwight Yorke’s eight goals past us and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. 1948 - We also lost to United at the same stage, going down 3-0 at Goodison Park. John Morris struck one of his seven goals past us, with Jack Rowley bagging one of his six and Charlie Mitten netting one of his five past us. 1953 – Half-back Jack Heydon made his 67th and last appearance for the club in our 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth, with Bob Paisley netting for the reds. Peter Harris bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Jimmy Scoular and Jack Henderson also on target. Rush hangs up his boots 1996 - Ian Rush played his final game for Wales, featuring in their 3-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Terni. It was his 73rd cap, in which time he scored 28 times, a Welsh record. Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon on the same day as they drew 3-3 with Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. Red births and death 1885 – Forward James Garside was born in West Gorton, Manchester. He signed from Accrington Stanley in March 1904, but only played five times without scoring before returning to Stanley in May 1906. 1889 – Keeper Augustus Beeby was born in Osmaston, Derbyshire. He joined the club in December 1908, but only made sixteen senior appearances before leaving for Manchester City in May 1911. 1909 - Forward Vic Wright was born in Bloxwich, Walsall. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 1975 - Outside-left Albert Pearson died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He bagged four goals in 51 reds games following his capture from Port Vale in March 1919. He was only a red for two years, before returning to the Valiants. Avoiding a shock 1970 - Ray Smith struck for Fourth Division Wrexham to hand the Welsh side an interval lead in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Fortunately, Bobby Graham bagged a brace with Ian St. John also on target as we won 3-1, with ex-Robin Peter ‘Max’ Wall in the reds side. We went out at Watford in the Sixth Round that season. God signs on 1999 - Robbie Fowler signed a new four-year contract, worth around £30,000 per week. He said in his autobiography that this was “almost half what the papers said I was getting, not at all bad, though”. 2008 – Centre-half Andre Wisdom signed from Bradford City. He made 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. In comes Jordy 2007 - Young forward Jordy Brouwer signed from Ajax, having scored 28 times in the Dutch youth league the previous season. He stayed with the second string until joining RKC Waalwijk on loan in January 2009. He left Anfield to join Leicester City for £400,000 in April 2009. 2014 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala joined Middlesbrough from Norwich City for £350,000 after a successful loan spell in the north east. On the same day, Jermaine Pennant was released by Stoke City. 2015 – Midfielder Lee Peltier left Huddersfield Town to join Cardiff City, after just twelve games in his second spell with the Terriers. 2018 – Javier Mascherano joined Hebei China Fortune from Barcelona after just one goal in 334 games for the Catalans. 2019 – Midfielder Alexis Mac Aliister joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Argentinos Juniors, going on to score twenty times in 112 games for the Seagulls. New centre opened 2000 - The Ian Frodsham Indoor Soccer Arena was opened by the Minister for Sport, Kate Hoey MP, marking the completion of the second phase of the club’s Academy. William’s last 1925 - Scottish left-winger Billy Chalmers played his second and final reds game in our 4-0 thumping of Bury in a top-flight fixture at Anfield. International bows 1998 - Brad Friedel won his 54th cap for the USA, and his first as a red, as they beat Sweden 1-0 in a friendly in Orlando. 2017 – Future red Luis Díaz made his debut for Colombia Under-20’s as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a South American Championships group game in Ecuador, with midfielder Allan on the losing side. 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured as Mali lost 1-0 to Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2019 – Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino played as Japan beat Vietnam 1-0 in their AFC Asian Cup Quarter-final in Dubai. On the same day, fellow future red Darwin Núñez featured for Uruguay Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to Argentina in a South American Championships group game in Chile. Kolo Touré played three times for the Ivory Coasty in Africa Cup of Nations games on this day over the years. 2006 – Ivory Coast beat Libya 2-1 in a group game as they made it all the way to the Final that year. 2010 – Algeria won 3-2 after extra time in a Quarter-final in Angola. 2015 – He played in a 1-1 draw with Mali in a group game in Equatorial Guinea, with future red Naby Keïta featuring in Guinea’s 1-1 draw with Cameroon. On the same day, future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s in their 4-2 defeat by Turkey. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso in the African Nations Championship in Morocco to finish bottom of their group. 2009 – Ronald Huth played for Paraguay as they lost 4-2 to Uruguay in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" group game in Venezuela. He signed from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £9.75m in July 2014, netting fourteen times in 167 reds games before moving on to Juventus on a free transfer in June 2018. 1887 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Middlesbrough in January 1914, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He had featured in our FA Cup Final defeat to Burnley in April 1914. 2004 – German midfielder Melkamu Frauendorf was born in Kembata, Ethiopia. He signed from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in August 2020, scoring as we lost the FA Youth Cup Final in May 2021. He made his senior bow in our FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury Town in January 2022. 2006 – Spanish centre-half Wellity Lucky was born in Zaragoza. He arrived as an Under-13 player, turning professional in April 2023. Dan the man 2006 - Daniel Agger signed from Brøndby IF for £5.8m. He played 232 games, notching fourteen times, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield and League Cup before returning to his former club in Denmark in August 2014. On the same day, reserves keeper David Martin signed from MK Dons for £250,000. He returned there permanently in May 2010 after failing to make a senior appearance, although he sat on the reds bench on nineteen occasions. Red centurions 2019 – Sadio Mané reached a century for the reds as Mohamed Salah bagged the only goal of the game at Brighton & Hove Albion from the spot, with the home side failing to register a shot on target. 2008 - Xabi Alonso played his hundredth League game for the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough. He came on for Yossi Benayoun after an hour when we were a goal down courtesy of George Boateng before Fernando Torres rescued a point with a long-range strike. 1980 – Ray Kennedy played his 200th League game for the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Southampton, with Terry McDermott scoring from the spot. 1929 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson reached a century of reds appearances in our 2-0 FA Cup Third Round win at Bristol City. Forward Bill Salisbury bagged his third and final reds goal, with Gordon Hodgson also netting in the second half. A treble to make anyone smile 1927 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers bagged a hat-trick as we beat Third Division South side Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 4-1 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Outside-left Fred Hopkin netted the other goal. We went out to Arsenal in the Fifth Round that season. Happy Cup memories We have won all eleven of our FA Cup ties on this day. 1935 - We beat non-League Yeovil & Petters United 6-2 in front of a record crowd of 11,830 at Huish Park, despite scouser Tommy McNeil giving Yeovil the lead inside five minutes, and the score being level at the break, through a deflected Berry Nieuwenhuys strike. Gordon Hodgson and Syd Roberts both netted twice for the reds, to add to a goal from Dave Wright. Yeovil’s McNeil also ended the game with a brace. Hodgson’s first strike was our 200th in the competition, with Roberts’ being his thirteenth and last goal for the club. Unfortunately, we went out to Blackburn Rovers at the next hurdle. 1921 - We won 2-1 at Manchester United in a First Round replay when Billy Lacey and Harry Chambers were on target as we came from behind while wearing a rare blue and white kit. However, we lost to Newcastle United in the next round. South for the first time 1955 - Centre-back Alex South made the first of his seven reds appearances as we won our FA Cup Third Round replay against Lincoln City at Anfield in extra time. John Evans bagged the only goal, having scored in the first game as well as being sent off. We made it to the Fifth Round before being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield. 1991 – Winger Jimmy Carter made his reds bow as a substitute for Ronnie Rosenthal in our goalless draw at Aston Villa as Kenny Dalglish took charge for the 300th time. Beating the Potters 1988 - Peter Beardsley netted the only goal of our FA Cup Third Round replay against Stoke City from just outside the area. 2014 – We triumphed 5-3 at the Britannia Stadium, our first League win there. Ryan Shawcross diverted an Aly Cissokho shot into his own net before Luis Suárez doubled our lead after half an hour. However, ex-reds Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam levelled the scores before the break, with the former netting one of his four strikes against the reds. Steven Gerrard converted a penalty with Suárez adding his second before Jon Walters bagged one of his seven goals past us. Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to complete the scoring late on. Beaten by the seaside 2011 – We lost 2-1 at Blackpool in our first trip there since August 1970. Fernando Torres gave us an early lead before Gary Taylor-Fletcher and DJ Campbell both struck for the home side. Beating the Blues We have twice defeated Birmingham City at Anfield on this day in history. 1974 - Kevin Keegan netted a brace as we won a First Division encounter 3-2 with Phil Thompson also on target as he sensibly played to the whistle while Blues’ defenders stopped as a flag was raised for an offside decision that was overruled. Bob Latchford bagged one of his five goals against the reds, with Bob Hatton grabbing one of his four. 1907 - Sam Raybould struck twice as we won an FA Cup First Round tie 2-1 as we progressed to the Fourth Round that season. Heading off 1963 – Left-half Tommy Leishman left the reds to join Hibernian. He had arrived from St. Mirren for £10,000 in November 1949, helping us back to the First Division in 1962, bagging a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. 1966 - Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter died. The Scottish international bagged twelve goals in 45 reds games after signing from Abercorn in 1899. 1985 – South African half-back Hugh Gerhardi committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. He signed from Johannesburg-based Thistle in August 1952 but only played six senior games before returning to his homeland after just one season. Gary Mac steps down 2004 - Gary McAllister resigned as Manager of Coventry City to care for his seriously ill wife Denise. He had been on compassionate leave after she suffered a setback in her battle against cancer, but then decided to quit permanently. Sadly, she passed away soon after. Alf off target 1938 - Outside-left Alf Hanson missed a penalty in the first half as we beat Third Division South outfit Crystal Palace 3-1 after extra time in our FA Cup Third Round replay at Anfield. Ernie Waldron gave the visitors the lead, before John Shafto sent the tie into extra time. The Eagles’ Nick Collins scored an own goal, before Willie Fagan converted a late penalty. Unfortunately, the reds were later forced to apologise by the FA after making some disparaging comments about Palace in the programme. We only made it as far as the Fifth Round that season, being knocked out by Huddersfield Town at Anfield, who went all the way to the Final. Stevie’s new deal 2012 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract, tying him to the club until 2014. He eventually stayed until the summer of 2015. On the move 2016 – Centre-half Steven Caulker signed on loan from Queens Park Rangers, having his temporary spell at Southampton cut short to accommodate the move. He made just four reds appearances. On the same day, Jonjo Shelvey left Swansea City after ten goals in 96 outings to sign for Newcastle United for £12m. 2015 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was sold to Shabab Al-Ahli in Dubai for a reported £4.7m. He had arrived from SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve reds games. 2012 - Robbie Keane signed for Aston Villa on a temporary basis from LA Galaxy, notching three times in seven outings. 1999 - Ex-reds reserve Jim Magilton joined Ipswich Town on loan from Sheffield Wednesday. He made eleven appearances for the Blues before the move was made permanent two months later. 2018 – Winger Ryan Kent joined Bristol City on loan, turning out on eleven occasions for the Robins. We won the replay, eventually lifting the trophy again that season. 1971 – Manchester City held us to a goalless draw in a League encounter in L4 1970 – We beat Coventry City 3-0 in an FA Cup Third Round replay at home, with Ian Ross heading in the opener, added to by Peter Thompson and Bobby Graham strikes. 1957 – Alan Arnell and Geoff Twentyman struck as we beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 in a Second Division fixture, despite falling behind to one of Bert Tindill’s five goals against us. Billy Liddell had to leave the pitch with the reds still trailing, having been knocked unconscious. 1952 – Jimmy Payne netted the only goal of our FA Cup Third Round meeting with Workington from the Third Division at Anfield 1924 – We came from behind to beat Bradford City 2-1 in L4 in a FA Cup First Round meeting, thanks to two goals from Harry Chambers. 1895 – We thumped Nottingham Forest 5-0 at home with Malcolm McVean on target twice. Jimmy Ross, Joe McQue and Davy Hannah also got on the scoresheet. In international action 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Namibia in Johannesburg. On the same day, ex-red Carl Medjani skippered Algeria as they held South Africa to a goalless draw in Rustenburg. 2008 – Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf featured as Senegal beat Namibia 3-1, with future red Kolo Touré playing as Ivory Coast won 2-0 in Kuwait. 2002 – Touré also played in a 1-1 friendly draw with Nigeria in Bouaké. 2000 – Fábio Aurélio played for a Brazil side as they thrashed Trinidad & Tobago 7-0 in Florianópolis. 1997 – Future red Rigobert Song played as Cameroon were held to a goalless draw by Angola in Yaoundé. 1993 - Gérard Houllier managed France A as they beat Senegal 3-1 in Dakar. Missing out 2015 – Ex-reds midfielder Javier Mascherano was voted into nineteenth in the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for 2014, with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo winning for the second consecutive year. -
Champions of the world 2019 – Roberto Firmino struck the only goal of the FIFA Club World Cup Final in Qatar as we beat Flamengo 1-0 after extra time. We had had an injury-time penalty award overruled by VAR. Macca’s farewell and hello 1991 - Steve McMahon played his 277th and final reds game as we drew 2-2 at home with Manchester City, whom he was shortly to join, as was widely known at the time. Dean Saunders and Steve Nicol scored our goals, with David White netting two of his five goals past us, having already also bagged a brace in the reverse fixture earlier that season. Luis yet again 2013 – Skipper Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 at Anfield to go top of the table, becoming the first player to score ten Premier League goals in a calendar month, beating Mark Viduka’s record for Leeds United of eight in April 2003, and the first player to score at least two goals in four Premier League games in a row. Suárez bagged a brace with Raheem Sterling also on target in the first half. Getting shuttered of Titi 2000 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was sold to West Ham United for £2.2m. He had bagged ten goals in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999. 2002 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan joined Darlington on loan from Preston North End, only playing twice before getting injured. Births and death 1927 - Centre-forward Jack Smith was born in Birkenhead. He netted fourteen times in 59 reds games after signing from Bromborough Pool in March 1951. He moved on to Torquay United in May 1954. 1877 - Winger Jack Cox was born in Everton. He signed from Blackpool for £150 in December 1897 and struck eighty times in 361 reds games, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship before returning to Bloomfield Road as Player/Manager in May 1909. 1878 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle was born in Cadder, East Dunbartonshire. He signed from Clyde in May 1899, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse a year later. 1984 - Irish midfielder Darren Potter was born in Liverpool. A former Liverpool schoolboys’ captain who was once with Everton, he used to attend Alsop High School, where Gérard Houllier once taught. He made seventeen senior appearances under Rafael Benítez, but moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2007 after a successful loan spell. 1948 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl died. The mighty Finn 1999 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the first time, succeeding future clubmate Jari Litmanen who had won for seven straight years. Future reds reserve Daniel Sjölund was named their Youth Player of the Year on the same day. Facing the Gunners 2014 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Arsenal. Mathieu Debuchy equalised seconds after Philippe Coutinho had given us the lead on the stroke of half-time. Olivier Giroud put the visitors in front with one of his eight strikes past us to date, but Martin Škrtel headed in deep into stoppage time to secure a point, shortly after Fabio Borini had stupidly been sent off after a second booking. 2008 – We drew 1-1 at Arsenal, with Robbie Keane grabbing a spectacular equaliser after Robin van Persie had given the home side the lead with the first of his seven strikes against the reds. Emmanuel Adebayor was sent off for the Gunners but we could not convert our numerical superiority into victory. We were wearing a curious kit combining silver shirts with red shorts and socks. 1929 - We beat the Gunners 1-0 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield, with inside-left Archie McPherson grabbing his first reds goal. Also recently 2022 – We lost a League Cup Fourth Round tie 3-2 at Manchester City. Erling Haaland opened the scoring before Fábio Carvalho equalised. Riyad Mahrez put the home side back in front but Mohamed Salah levelled inside a minute. However, Nathan Aké nodded in the winner. 2012 – Raheem Sterling signed a new contract with the reds, having already made 28 senior appearances at that point. Friday night live 1984 - John Wark and Ian Rush struck as we won 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers in front of the live TV cameras on a Friday night, to keep us in touch with the First Division leaders. Thumping the Villains 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged a brace with Albert Stubbins and Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet as we beat Aston Villa 4-1 at Anfield in a top-flight meeting. Balmer was actually netting in his seventh consecutive game, in which time he had struck fifteen times in total. Former hero of both sides of Stanley Park, Fred Geary, presented the visiting side with the match ball from the 1897 FA Cup Final before the game as this had been taken home by the defeated Everton side on the day. Farewell Crazy Horse 2004 - Red legend Emlyn Hughes died aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. More legendary farewells 1985 - Phil Neal played his 650th and final reds game, coming on for Steve McMahon as we won a First Division match 3-0 at Coventry City to close the gap on Manchester United at the top of the table. Jim Beglin bagged his third and final reds goal, with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush also netting that day. 1935 – Gordon Hodgson netted his 241st and last reds goal in our 3-2 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield. Anfield trebles galore 1907 - Forward Joe Hewitt scored a hat-trick as we trounced Notts County 6-0, as right-half Bobby Robinson netted his fiftieth goal for the club. Treble save 2022 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Derby County in the Third Round of the League Cup, with the tie heading straight to penalties. Caoimhín Kelleher saved three spot-kicks to win a club record fourth penalty shot-out as a goalkeeper. Forwards Ben Doak and Layton Stewart both debuted in this game. Happy birthdays 1965 - Short-lived reds winger Jimmy Carter was born in Hammersmith. He spent just nine months at Anfield after signing from Millwall for £800,000 in January 1991, making only eight appearances before leaving for Arsenal at a loss of £300,000. 2006 – Northern Irish midfielder Kieran Morrison was born. He joined the reds from Manchester United at Under-14’s level, turning pro in April 2024. 1904 – Bill Murray was born in Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He signed from Clydebank in November 1927, netting once in four senior outings before joining Third Division North side Barrow in January 1930, becoming their captain. 1886 - Forward Joseph Brough was born in Burslem. He signed from Port Vale in August 1910 and struck three times in eleven senior outings before joining Stoke in January 1912. First and last goals 1976 - Joey Jones grabbed his first reds goal as we beat Leicester City 5-1 in a First Division match at Anfield with Steve Heighway and John Toshack on the scoresheet, and Phil Neal and Kevin Keegan both converting penalties. Frank Worthington bagged one of his three strikes against the reds. 1895 - Another left-back struck his only reds goal on this day in history, with Tom Wilkie on target in a 3-1 defeat of Leicester Fosse in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Alan Ball struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Liam Brady also on the scoresheet. 1988 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless draw in a League Cup Third Round replay at Highbury. Larry fought the law 1972 - Larry Lloyd became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal. He was appealing his dismissal in the 2-0 win over Manchester City back in August. Thumping the Cottagers 2013 – We beat Fulham 4-0 at Anfield in a League encounter, with Fernando Amorebieta heading through his own net before Martin Škrtel doubled our lead. Luis Suárez then struck either side of the break. Brucie besmirched 1994 - A certain national rag printed allegations that Bruce Grobbelaar had accepted bribes to throw games. He eventually successfully sued. Also recently 2009 – We drew with Birmingham City for the fifth consecutive time in the League, this time 2-2 at Anfield. David N’Gog put us in front but we went in 2-1 down at the break, thanks to a goal from Christian Benítez and a stunning long-range strike by Cameron Jerome. Steven Gerrard handed us a share of the spoils from the spot after N’Gog’s controversial fall in the area. Red centurions 2002 - We conceded our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge as Jerzy Dudek dropped the ball at Middlesbrough to enable Gareth Southgate to score. This began our atrocious run that winter. 1912 - We also faced Boro with Arthur Metcalf netting a brace in our 4-3 win at Ayresome Park. Tom Miller and Jack Parkinson were also on target. Beating the Blues 1994 - We came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield with Neil Ruddock adding to a Robbie Fowler brace. John Spencer scored the first of his three goals against the reds. 1968 - We also beat them in a home top-flight fixture as Ian Callaghan netted in a 2-1 win, with Tommy Smith scoring from the spot. Alan Birchenall netted one of his four strikes past the reds. A European win 2000 - We won 3-2 at Slovan Liberec to reach the Third Round of the UEFA Cup 4-2 on aggregate. We fell behind on the night before Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen struck, with Heskey also striking an upright. Owen netted just 21 seconds after coming on for Dietmar Hamann. Deano for Wales again 1996 - Ex-red Dean Saunders struck in his third consecutive game for Wales as they were thumped 7-1 by the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier in Eindhoven. Future reds Markus Babbel and Paul Ince were both also in World Cup action that day. French on target 2005 - Djibril Cissé scored in France’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Costa Rica in Martinique with ex-red Alou Diarra also in the side, while Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player, bagging his only goal while playing in Turkey. 2016 – Dominic Solanke netted for England Under-20’s as they thumped Nigeria 8-1 in South Korea. Another thumping win 1918 - We beat Port Vale 4-0 in a home Wartime League meeting thanks to goals from Thomas Green, Thomas Bennett and a Harold Wadsworth brace. On the move 1999 - Ex-red Gareth Roberts joined Tranmere Rovers from Greek side Panionos on a free transfer after a loan spell. He scored fourteen times in 337 games for Rovers in total, moving on to League One outfit Doncaster Rovers in July 2006. 2001 - Alan Navarro moved to Prenton Park on loan. He struck twice in four games before signing permanently the following January. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was sold to Preston North End. He had signed from Home Farm for £20,000 in August 1983 but only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986. 2015 – Ex-reds winger Adam Hammill re-joined Barnsley on a short-term deal, before signing a two-year deal the following June. Vlad’s end 2009 - Vladimír Šmicer retired from playing. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He left Anfield for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. He ended his career back at SK Slavia Praha, his first club. Award winners 2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named as the Northwest Football Awards' Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us to the League title. International beginnings 2017 - Krisztián Németh won his first cap as a New England Revolution player as Hungary lost a friendly 2-1 in Luxembourg. 2008 – John Barnes took charge of Jamaica for the first time as they won a friendly 2-0 in the Cayman Islands. 2006 - Academy midfielder Sean Highdale won his first cap for England Under-16’s as they beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in a Victory Shield game in Ballymena. On the same day, future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s as they held Latvia to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Gloggnitz. 1996 – Future red Vegard Heggem netted his only goal for Norway Under-21’s as they thrashed Switzerland 7-3 in a European Championships qualifier in Biel. 1993 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme won his eleventh and last Under-21's cap as Norway lost 3-1 to Turkey in a European Championships qualifier in Istanbul. 2022 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Jamaica in a friendly in Yaoundé. -
In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. Dave Hickson netted a brace for the reds, with Jim Harrop and Alan A’Court also on target. Joe Spence struck the last of his five goals against the reds. 1968 - New record signing Alun Evans scored on his debut in our 4-0 win at home to Leicester City, with all four goals coming in the opening twelve minutes, courtesy also of Ron Yeats, a Tommy Smith penalty and Ian Callaghan. 1999 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell scored on his only senior reds appearance as we beat Hull City 4-2 in the second leg of our Worthington Cup Second Round tie, with Karl-Heinz Riedle netting a brace in his 76th and last appearance, and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. More recent reds firsts 2021 – Joe Gomez skippered the reds for the first time as we won a League Cup Third Round tie 3-0 on our way to claiming the trophy for the ninth time. Right-back Conor Bradley and midfielders Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton all debuted, with keeper Caoimhín Kelleher saving a spot-kick to maintain our lead before the break. Takumi Minamino struck either side of a Divock Origi header. Bells toll again 2011 – Craig Bellamy struck the first goal in his second spell at Anfield as we won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Third Round of the League Cup, also smashing the crossbar with a 35-yard free-kick. A new record attendance of 21,897 at the American Express Community Stadium was set. Dirk Kuyt added a second goal late on, before Ashley Barnes converted a last-minute spot-kick for the home side. Ex-reds reserve Alan Navarro featured for the Seagulls. He spent another six seasons at Portman Road, helping them back into the top flight in 1992 and taking his total appearances for the Blues to 678. 2012 - Stephen Warnock joined Bolton Wanderers on loan from Aston Villa, playing fifteen times for the Trotters. 2020 - Mikel San José signed for Birmingham City, playing 28 times before terminating his contract by mutual consent the following May. 2021 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He took them from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season, leading them to 42 wins in 108 games in charge before being sacked in December 2023. Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. Robbie Fowler scored his seventh in the competition, a club record with Mark Wright bagging his first goal in his 200th LFC game. 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored in his seventh consecutive reds game, netting twice past future reds keeper Alisson Becker before the break as we beat his former club Roma 5-2 in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final. Sadio Mané also scored before Roberto Firmino added a brace to reach fifty goals for the reds. However, the visitors pulled two late goals back through one of Edin Džeko’s five goals past us to date and a Diego Perotti spot-kick. Divock again 2022 – We beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Andy Robertson headed in the opener after an hour. Divock Origi nodded in his eleventh Premier League goal from off the bench, a club record. This was his 41st and final strike for the club, six of which had come against the Blues. Going down 1954 – Bill Jones played his 277th and final reds game in our 3-0 defeat at Blackpool to confirm relegation to the Second Division, with inside-right Sammy Smyth appearing for the 44th and last time. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have twice visited Manchester United for top-flight fixtures on this day in history. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored the only goal for the third time in four League meetings at Old Trafford, this time from the penalty spot after Gary Neville brought down Steven Gerrard. This was Stéphane Henchoz’s 200th reds game, John Arne Riise’s hundredth League game for us, and Bruno Cheyrou’s 48th and final reds appearance, after he came off the bench to replace Harry Kewell. 1965 - Unfortunately, we lost 3-0 as United went on to claim the title. Denis Law bagged the first two of his six goals past us with United also having two strikes ruled out, hitting the post twice and having two shots cleared off the line. John Connelly netted the other goal for the home side. Rafa honoured 2006 - Rafael Benítez was named Coach of the Year for 2005 by la Comunidad de Madrid at the annual Seven Stars of Sport Awards ceremony. This was in recognition of leading us to stunning Champions League success in Istanbul in his first season in charge at Anfield. Banned 2013 - Luis Suárez was banned by the FA for ten matches after being found guilty of biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanović at Anfield two days earlier. Gary Mac the boss 2002 - Gary McAllister was named Coventry City’s new player-manager, although he would remain at Anfield until the end of the season. He remained in the post until he had to step down due to his wife’s illness in January 2004. Happy birthday 1976 - Steve Finnan was born in Limerick. He made 217 appearances after signing from Fulham for £3.5m in July 2003, notching once. He helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield before joining R.C.D. Espanyol in September 2008. In and out 1895 – Scottish centre-half Robert Neill signed on loan from Hibernian, arriving permanently in May 1896. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. 2009 – Reserves centre-half Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City for £400,000 after spending the whole of the season on loan at the Walkers Stadium. He had made just five senior reds appearances. All-star SteG 2005 - Steven Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the second season running, the only reds player to be so honoured. He was eventually named in the team eight times, a record in the Premier League era. International beginning 1977 - Future red Mark Lawrenson made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland as they were held to a goalless draw in Dublin by Poland. He died in April 2019. 1991 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne was born in Stockwell, south London. He signed from Southampton for £12.5m in July 2015, notching twice in 103 reds games before being released in June 2020. 1976 - Fernando Morientes was born in Cilleros in Spain. He struck twelve times in 61 reds appearances following his £6.3m arrival from Real Madrid in January 2005, but moved on to Valencia in July 2006 after failing to fully convince in a reds shirt. He had helped us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield. 1968 - Former second-string defender Alex Watson was born in Liverpool. He signed professional terms in May 1985 but made just nine first-team appearances, including being on the winning side in the FA Charity Shield in 1988, before joining Bournemouth for £150,000 in January 1991. 1870 – Outside-right Tom Wyllie was born in Maybole, South Ayrshire. Ronnie Whelan chose the perfect time to score his only goal of the season after Alan Knight had pushed a John Barnes free-kick onto the post to take the tie to a replay, which we went on to win. Ibou off the mark 2022 – French centre-half Ibrahima Konaté nodded in his first goal as we won the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final 3-1 at SL Benfica on our way to reaching the Final in Paris. Sadio Mané also struck before future red Darwin Núñez pulled a goal back. However, Luis Díaz struck late on as we secured a club record eighth consecutive away win in all competitions. En route to another final 2001 - We came back from the Camp Nou with a goalless draw in our UEFA Cup Semi-final first leg meeting with Barcelona, to set us on our way to a third UEFA Cup triumph. The Spanish giants had only twice previously failed to score at home that season. Future reds keeper Pepe Reina was in the home goal, while Bolo Zenden made an appearance for the home side from the bench. Red farewells 1969 - Gerry Byrne played his 333rd and final reds game as Roger Hunt struck the only goal of our home League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers. 1947 - Wing-half Harry Kaye appeared for the club for the second and last time as we lost 3-2 to Blackpool at Anfield. 1924 – We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur with Danny Shone on target as outside-right Harold Wadsworth appeared for the 55th and final time. 1915 – Tom Miller scored in his hundredth League game for the reds with Jimmy Nicholl netting his fourteenth and final goal for the club and Jackie Sheldon also scoring as we defeated Blackburn Rovers 3-0 in L4. Off the mark 2019 – We won 3-1 at Southampton as we came from behind to return to the top of the table. Shane Long opened the scoring with the most recent of his four goals past us, the 5,000th goal we had conceded in the top flight, with Naby Keïta equalising with his first reds goal before the break. Mohamed Salah scored his fiftieth League goal for the reds to put us in front late on, with Jordan Henderson also on target. Red debutants 2008 – Damien Plessis debuted in our 1-1 League draw at Arsenal, just three days after a similar result there in the Champions League. Peter Crouch gave us the lead before Nicklas Bendtner equalised. 1920 - Forward Dick Johnson made his reds bow as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Oldham Athletic. Stig in the dumps 1995 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye broke his leg as we beat Southampton 3-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush bagged a brace, to add to a Robbie Fowler penalty after we had fallen behind to a goal from Richard Hall. Bruce Grobbelaar and former reds reserve Jim Magilton both featured for the visitors. A win at last 1912 - We beat Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield to record our first victory in twelve matches as we ended the season in seventeenth place. Half-back Harry Lowe struck his first reds goal with Sam Gilligan also on the scoresheet. Reds awards 2002 - This was a day of awards. Gérard Houllier and Phil Thompson were jointly awarded the Manager of the Month prize for March while Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Young Player Of The Year award, which he had won the previous year. International bows 1913 - Keeper Sam Hardy won his first cap as an Aston Villa player, and fifteenth in total, as England beat Scotland 1-0 in a British International Championships game at Stamford Bridge. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye made his debut for Norway Under-19’s as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a tournament game in Poland. Six-ton Tom 1913 – We won 3-1 at Aston Villa with Arthur Goddard, Jack Parkinson and Arthur Metcalf all scoring in what was Tom Watson’s 600th League game in charge of the club. A Victory defeat for Ephraim 1919 - Right-back Ephraim Longworth played for the Football League in a Victory match, which a Scottish League team won 3-2 at Ibrox. On the same day, inside-forward Harry Lewis struck for the sixth consecutive game, as we beat Southport Vulcan 4-2 at Anfield in a Lancashire Section Subsidiary Competition fixture, as the Lancashire Senior Cup was then known. Tom Miller and Harold and Walter Wadsworth also scored. For Ibrox 1902 - Winger Jack Cox played for England, with Alex Raisbeck, and future reds keeper Ned Doig and inside-right George Livingstone all turning out for Scots in a British International Championships game at Ibrox Park that ended 1-1. However, 25 people died and 517 were injured when the back of the new West Tribune Stand collapsed due to heavy rainfall the previous night during the second half. Play continued but the match was later declared void by the two FA’s. Other reds games 2017 – Bournemouth held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield with Benik Ofobe giving the Cherries an early lead. Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi scored either side of the break, but Joshua King bagged a late equaliser. 1999 – We drew 2-2 at Nottingham Forest. Jamie Redknapp gave us a half-time lead, with Dougie Freedman equalising. Michael Owen restored our lead, but Pierre van Hooijdonk levelled with a stoppage-time free kick. 1975 – Kevin Keegan bagged a brace as we won 2-0 at Leeds United. 1958 – Jimmy Melia and Bobby Murdoch struck as we beat Swansea Town 2-0 in a Second Division encounter at Vetch Field. 1952 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 in L4. Sami clogs off the mark 1997 - Sami Hyypiä scored his first goal in the Dutch Premier League. Unfortunately, Willem II lost 3-1 at SC Heerenveen. 2008 – Sami signed a new contract with the reds until the summer of 2009. Also in international action 1930 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England in their 5-2 victory over Scotland in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1952 – Billy Liddell featured in Scotland’s 2-1 defeat by England in the same competition at Hampden Park. 1978 – Future reds coach Joe Corrigan featured as England Under-21’s held Italy to a goalless draw in the second leg of their European Championships Quarter-final in Rome to progress to the Semi-finals. -
Rafa’s century 2009 – Rafael Benítez secured his hundredth League win as reds boss as we came from behind to trounce Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring from the spot but Fernando Torres hounded Nemanja Vidić into a mistake before coolly slotting home the equaliser, with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty a minute before the break. The hapless Vidić was sent off against the reds for the second time that season with a quarter of an hour to go, with Fábio Aurélio netting from the resultant free-kick. The day was complete when Andrea Dossena struck his second and final reds goal, in consecutive fixtures. Happy birthday Joe 1990 – Welsh midfielder Joe Allen was born in Carmarthen. He signed from Swansea City for £15m in August 2012, still a Welsh record sale, following his former boss Brendan Rodgers. He notched seven times in 132 reds games before being sold to Stoke City for £13m in July 2016. 1979 - Ex-red Nicolas Anelka was born in Versailles, Paris. He struck five times in 22 reds games while on loan at Anfield from Paris Saint-Germain, arriving in December 2001. The real Busby babe 1936 - Right-half Matt Busby made his reds debut in a 1-0 League defeat at Huddersfield Town, the first of his 122 reds appearances, many as captain. He of course found even greater fame as Manager down the East Lancs. Road. Reg Chester struck the last of his four goals against the reds. 1925 – Forward Tom Scott debuted as we were thumped 4-0 at Preston North End. Horace Barnes struck the last of his nine goals against the reds, with George Sapsford netting twice and William Aitken also scoring. League Cup Final 1981 - West Ham United held us to a 1-1 draw at Wembley in the League Cup Final, with Ray Kennedy deputising as captain for the injured Phil Thompson, for whom Colin Irwin stood in. Veteran Steve Heighway replaced David Johnson, whose throat infection ruled him out just half an hour before kick-off. The game was goalless after ninety minutes, before Alan Kennedy’s right-footed extra-time strike looked to have won us the trophy for the first time, with Sammy Lee lying on the ground in an offside position. However, a last-minute Terry McDermott handball led to a Ray Stewart penalty that meant we had to wait another three weeks before we claimed the cup in the Villa Park replay. Four-tons up 1992 - Bruce Grobbelaar played his 400th League game for the club as we lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace. 1990 – Peter Beardsley netted the only goal of our FA Cup Sixth Round replay early on against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield as Ian Rush played his 400th reds game. Trebles all round 1989 - John Aldridge bagged a hat-trick, including a penalty, in a 5-0 First Division victory over Luton Town at home, with Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon also netting. Aldo’s first strike was his fiftieth reds goal. 1995 - Peter Ndlovu scored all three goals for Coventry City in their 3-2 League win at Anfield, including one from the spot, the first treble by a visiting player in the newly-renamed Premier League. Ex-red David Burrows scored an own goal, with Jan Mølby bagging our other as he played his 292nd and last reds outing. 1942 - Jack Balmer and Cyril Done both scored hat-tricks as we trounced Rochdale 8-2 at Spotland in a Wartime League fixture that also counted for the War League Cup. Done’s treble included a spot-kick, while Berry Nieuwenhuys added a brace. Goalscoring milestones 1987 – We won 3-1 at Oxford United with the transfer-listed John Wark netting either side of an Ian Rush strike, taking the Scotsman to a final total of 42 goals for the club. 1953 - Left-winger Alan A'Court struck the first of his 63 reds goals as we beat Sunderland 2-0 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield. Sammy Smyth had opened the scoring inside a quarter of an hour as right-half Phil Taylor played his 300th League game for the club. 1914 - Billy Banks scored on his reds debut, although we lost 5-2 at Burnley in a First Division fixture. Jimmy Nicholl grabbed our other goal. On the same day, Billy Lacey played for Ireland in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in the British International Championships in Belfast. English debutants galore 1921 - Right-half John Bamber won his only cap as England held Wales to a goalless draw in the British International Championships in Wrexham. Clubmates Tom Bromilow and Harry Chambers also made their England debuts in the same game. 1910 - Forward Jack Parkinson made his England bow as they beat Wales 1-0 in the British International Championships at Ninian Park. Sam Hardy was in the England goal, while ex-red George Latham won his ninth cap for Wales, and only one as a Southport Central player. 1984 – Future red Jan Mølby played for the Netherlands as they thumped Denmark 6-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam. The Wright signing 1934 – Forward Vic Wright signed from Rotherham United. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games, moving on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. Michael misses again 2004 - Michael Owen had a penalty saved as we lost 2-0 at Southampton, in what was Paul Sturrock’s first of only thirteen games in charge of the Saints. This was Michael’s ninth failure in 22 spot-kicks for the reds. James Beattie and Kevin Phillips netted for the home side. Souey to Ewood 2000 - Graeme Souness was appointed Manager of Blackburn Rovers. He led them back into the top flight in his first full season, and the Worthington Cup the following year. He left them in September 2004 to take over at Newcastle United. Swap deal 1936 – Right-half and future reds boss Phil Taylor signed from Bristol Rovers for £5,000 plus outside-right Billy Hartill. Hartill had failed to score in four outings since arriving from Everton two months earlier, while Taylor went on to net 32 times in 343 reds games. Thumping the Baggies 1896 - Tom Bradshaw struck a brace with Frank Becton, Malcolm McVean and Jimmy Ross all also on the scoresheet as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 5-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Happy birthday Ronnie 1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. He died in March 2017. 1980 – Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen was born in Asnæs. He was signed by Roy Hodgson for £4.5m from Juventus in August 2010 and played 21 reds games without scoring, moving on to French side Évian Thonon Gaillard a year later. 1973 - Goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero was born in Castellón de la Plana. He played for a variety of clubs in Spain, including Real Murcia, and joined the staff at Melwood in July 2007 after José Ochotorena left to join Valencia. He then followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale. 1962 – Former Head of the Academy medical department Dave Galley was born in Stoke-on-Trent. He had roles with Port Vale, Fulham, Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday before joining the reds as a physiotherapist in the summer of 1999. He returned to the club in 2009, moving on to Sunderland a year later. Another record for Rushie 1995 - Ian Rush equalled Denis Law’s FA Cup scoring record of 41 goals as we beat Wimbledon 2-0 at Selhurst Park in a Fifth Round replay. John Barnes was also on target. Rush went on to net 44 FA Cup goals in total, still a competition record. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in the next round. Wembley disappointment 2016 – We lost the League Cup Final to Manchester City on penalties. Fernandinho put the Sky Blues ahead shortly after the break, with Philippe Coutinho equalising to send the game into extra time. Emre Can converted the first spot kick before Fernandinho missed. However, Lucas, Coutinho and Adam Lallana’s efforts were all saved as we lost the shoot-out 3-1. Seven thousand goals 2021 – Curtis Jones opened the scoring behind closed doors at Sheffield United as we won 2-0. Roberto Firmino’s strike deflected off Kean Bryan in what was our 7,000th goal in top-flight football, becoming the second club to reach that landmark. Off the mark 1987 - John Aldridge bagged his first reds goal to hand us a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield. Carra the top personality 2005 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Merseyside Sports Personality of the Year in a ceremony organised by the Liverpool Echo. Friedel’s debut 1998 - Brad Friedel made his reds bow in a 2-1 League defeat at Aston Villa. Michael Owen bagged our goal from the spot, with ex-red Stan Collymore netting both of the home side’s goals in John Gregory’s first game as Villa boss. 2001 - Friedel won his 67th cap for the USA, his first one as a Blackburn Rovers player, in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Mexico. The game was played in the Columbus Crew Stadium, where he used to play his club football. Second-rate King Kenny 1984 - Kenny Dalglish made his first reserves appearance for the reds, nearly seven years into his Anfield career. He had been out of action for two months since fracturing a cheekbone against Manchester United. Only 360 fans were there to see him lay on a goal for Paul Jewell as he played the full ninety minutes. On the same day, Graeme Souness captained Scotland to a 2-1 victory over Wales in the British International Championships at Hampden Park, with Ian Rush and ex-reds Joey Jones and Frank McGarvey also featuring. Twice against Boro 1903 - We won 2-0 at Linthorpe Road, with Sam Raybould and Edgar Chadwick on target in this top-flight meeting with Middlesbrough, our first visit to Boro and only fixture at this venue. 2009 – We lost 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium. First time as a red 1999 - Rigobert Song won his first cap as a reds player as Cameroon beat Mozambique 1-0 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Yaoundé. International beginning and end 2006 - Ex-reds keeper Tony Warner won his first cap for Trinidad & Tobago as a substitute in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Iceland at Loftus Road. Future reds Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Andriy Voronin also played for their countries while Scott Carson, Darren Potter, future reds Alberto Aquilani, Raul Meireles and James Milner, and ex-red Michael Foley-Sheridan all featured in Under-21’s friendlies on the same day, with future red Glen Johnson winning his fourteenth and final cap at this level as England beat Norway 3-1 in Reading, with John Welsh playing for the first time since moving permanently to Hull City. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Finland in the Cyprus Tournament. 2012 – Future red Lazar Marković made his senior international debut for Serbia as they beat Armenia 2-0 in a friendly in Cyprus. Meanwhile, Conor Coady captained England Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly victory over the Czech Republic in London, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 1925 – Ex-red Harry Beadles won his second and final cap for Wales in their 2-1 defeat by England in the British International Championships at Vetch Field. 1995 – Future red Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his sixteenth and last Under-17’s cap for Iceland as they were trounced 6-1 by Scotland in the Portugal Tournament. International reds in action 2001 - Nick Barmby bagged the first England goal of Sven-Göran Eriksson’s reign, with Emile Heskey also netting in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Spain at Villa Park, as Michael Owen won his 25th cap. On the same day, Igor Bišcan came on as a substitute in Croatia’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Austria in Rijeka, winning his twelfth cap, and first as a reds player, with future red Alex Manninger also playing. Also in action that day were Sander Westerveld, who kept a clean sheet against Turkey at the Amsterdam ArenA, Sami Hyypiä, Vladimír Šmicer and ex-red Jim Magilton. Future red Abel Xavier appeared in Portugal’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Andorra in Funchal. Meanwhile, Feyenoord’s Jerzy Dudek won his tenth cap as Poland thumped a Switzerland side that included Stéphane Henchoz 4-0. On the move 1978 – Centre-half Max Thompson was sold to Blackpool for £80,000. He had become the club’s youngest ever player in May 1974, aged seventeen years and 129 days, standing in for John Toshack four days after the FA Cup had been won in 1974, having only turned pro four months earlier. He was offloaded to Aston Villa in February 2000 for £7m, where he again failed to fulfil his potential. 1985 - Momo Sissoko was born in Mont Saint Agnain, France. He signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times and scoring just once. He had previously been signed by Rafael Benítez while he was in Spain, from Auxerre, and was sold to Juventus for £8.2m in January 2008. 1954 – Piet Hamberg was born in Winschoten in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as Academy Technical Manager in June 2007, staying in the role for two years. 1986 – Ex-reserves custodian David Martin was born in Romford. The son of West Ham United centre-back Alvin signed from MK Dons for £250,000 in January 2006 and sat on the bench nineteen times without making a senior appearance, returning to Stadium:mk in May 2010. 1980 – First-team physiotherapist Matt Konopinski was born in Leeds. He joined the club in February 2009 from Barnsley, moving on to the FA in October 2018. 1990 - Jonathan Woodgate was born in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough. He worked as a scout for the reds during the 2016/17 season. In comes Thommo 1971 - Phil Thompson signed as a professional, the day after his seventeenth birthday. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1914 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl signed from Middlesbrough, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He had featured in our FA Cup Final defeat to Burnley in April 1914. 2015 – Midfielder Jordan Williams signed a new contract until 2017. He made his only senior appearance in a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough in September 2014, moving on to Rochdale in June 2018. Red farewells 2011 – Fernando Torres struck his last two reds goals as we won 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Raúl Meireles’ stunning volley coming between his strikes. We opened the scoring by breaking Wolves’ offside trap, with Richard Keys and Andy Gray’s disparaging remarks about the female assistant referee on Sky leading to their eventual departure. Ex-reds reserve Adam Hammill made his debut for the home side as a substitute. 2000 – Middlesbrough held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield, with forward Jon Newby coming off the bench to make his fourth and final reds appearance. 1977 – Left-back Brian Kettle played his fourth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Norwich City, giving away an early penalty that Martin Peters converted, one of his fourteen goals against us. Warnock walks 2007 - Stephen Warnock was sold to Blackburn Rovers for a fee believed to be £1.5m. He had played 67 reds games, netting just once, and turned out 109 times for Rovers, striking six times, before joining Aston Villa in August 2009. On the same day, Milan Baroš joined Olympique Lyonnais from Aston Villa in a swap deal for John Carew, after fourteen goals in 51 games for Villa. A record crowd 2006 - The then biggest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League, of 67,874, witnessed a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United when we succumbed to a late Rio Ferdinand goal. 2002 - The previous record was just 275 supporters fewer, set when Danny Murphy grabbed a late winner as we won at Old Trafford for the second season in a row. Future red Alberto Aquilani also represented his country that day. 2008 - Song also featured in a 4-2 to Egypt in another group game in Ghana. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played in an Africa Cup of Nations group game as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 1-0 in Equatorial Guinea. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund was also in international action that day. 2013 – Touré featured again as Togo lost 2-1 in South Africa. He left Middlesbrough with the reputation as perhaps their best-ever custodian, but was merely back-up to David James at Anfield, sitting on the bench just five times. 1985 - Ex-reserves full-back Stephen Vaughan was born in Liverpool. He was released in 2004, going on to play 85 times for Chester City. Wearside woe We have played at Sunderland in First Division matches twice on this day in history. 1898 - We lost 1-0. 1921 - Harry Chambers struck as we left Roker Park having lost 2-1, with Charlie Buchan bagging two of his 21 strikes against us. On the same day, left-winger Albert Riera had his contract with Slovenian side Zavrč terminated by mutual consent after just four months with the club. 2021- Ex-reds defender Corey Whelan signed for Wigan Athletic, playing ten times as the Latics avoided relegation to League Two. Brad in action twice Future red Brad Friedel twice represented his country on this day in history. 1994 - The USA drew 1-1 with Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland in a friendly in Fullerton. 1997 - They lost 4-1 to a Denmark League XI in the US Cup in Pasadena. Finn stands down 2008 - Steve Finnan announced his retirement from international football, after fifty caps. However, he reversed his decision following the appointment of Giovanni Trapattoni a month later, going on to play twice more for his country. Other reds games 1994 – We came from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 in L4 thanks to an Ian Rush brace. 1983 – Phil Neal was on target as we beat Birmingham City at Anfield. 1980 – John Robertson struck the only goal of our League Cup Semi-final first leg at Nottingham Forest, late on from the penalty spot after Ray Clemence was judged to have brought down Garry Birtles. We drew the second leg at Anfield although Forest lost the Final to Wolverhampton Wanderers. 1966 – We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea in an FA Cup Third Round tie, with Roger Hunt scoring after just two minutes. Peter Osgood headed in five minutes later, with Bobby Tambling nodding in one of his eight goals against us in the second half. 1949 – We won 3-0 at Bolton Wanderers, with Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins scoring before Matt Gillies put through his own net. 1938 – Alf Hanson netted as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield United in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie. A treble for Sir Roger 1964 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick as we thumped Burnley 5-1 in a top-flight meeting at Turf Moor. Geoff Strong and Chris Lawler both struck their first reds goals while half-back Willie Stevenson reached a century of reds outings. Half a millennium for Stevie 2009 - Steven Gerrard played his 500th reds game as we held Blackburn Rovers to a goalless Premiership draw at Ewood Park. The closest we came was when David N’Gog rattled the crossbar. 1925 – Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck in the ninetieth minute as we held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Ewood Park. Ted Harper bagged one of his five goals against the reds. Arnell off the mark fast 1953 - Forward Alan Arnell scored on his reds debut as we beat Blackpool 5-2 at Anfield. Right-winger Jimmy Payne netted while appearing for the 200th time with Sammy Smyth also on the scoresheet and Alan A’Court bagging a brace. Half-back Barry Wilkinson was also making his reds bow. Ernest Taylor struck the last two of his five goals past us in this game. Carra’s error 1998 - Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. He also put through his own net in the return fixture at Anfield later that season. Patrik Berger grabbed our goal at White Hart Lane, with Ruel Fox also netting for the home side. Beating Wednesday We have twice beaten Sheffield Wednesday on this day over the years. 1999 - We triumphed 4-1 at Anfield, as Steven Gerrard bagged his first reds goal. George Briggs netted the last of his ten goals against the reds, with Tom Grosvenor and Sam Smith also on the scoresheet. 1896 – We thumped Fleetwood Rangers 9-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield. George Allan struck four times with Frank Becton also nabbing a hat-trick. Our other goals came from Joe McQue and an own goal. Miki’s bow in Istanbul 2006 - Young Spanish centre-half Miki Roqué made his only reds appearance as a substitute for Xabi Alonso for the final six minutes of our 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray, so becoming the player with the shortest first-class career in our history. This was the final game of our Champions League group, in which we had already secured top spot. Robbie Fowler bagged both our goals, his only reds strikes in the Champions League proper. Young debutants 1990 - Steve McManaman became the first player to play for the England Under-21’s without any first-team experience, as he featured in their goalless friendly draw with Wales at Prenton Park. Colvin born 1876 – Scottish forward Bobby Colvin was born in Kirkconnel. Zak Whitbread played in the USA’s 2-0 defeat of South Korea, while John Welsh turned out as England were held to a goalless draw by Colombia, with future red Andy Lonergan wining his ninth and last cap at this level. Meanwhile, Darren Potter was sent off as the Republic of Ireland, also featuring Michael Foley-Sheridan, beat Mexico 2-0. Elisha for the Irish 1931 - Reds keeper Elisha Scott won his sixteenth cap for Northern Ireland, following five for the combined Ireland, as they thumped Wales 4-0 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Digger in charge 2008 – John Barnes led Jamaica to a 4-0 thumping of Grenada in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Montego Bay. -
Michael’s European record 2002 - Michael Owen scored his fifteenth away goal in Europe, which remains a club record, as we beat Vitesse Arnhem 1-0 at their Gelredome in the Third Round of the UEFA Cup. Surprisingly, this was our first game in the Netherlands on a club ground, and our first win in the country. Beating the Gunners 2004 - Neil Mellor grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner as we beat Arsenal 2-1, his first League strike. Xabi Alonso had opened the scoring with his first Anfield goal before Patrick Vieira rounded off a slick Arsenal move to equalise. Antonio Núñez came on as a substitute for Florent Sinama-Pongolle to make his reds debut. Porto downed 2007 - We thumped Porto 4-1 at Anfield in a Champions League group game to keep us on track to qualify for the knock-out phase. Steve Finnan played his 200th reds game, and fiftieth in Europe for the club, as Fernando Torres struck his first two European goals for the reds before the scoreline was boosted by a late penalty converted by Steven Gerrard and a Peter Crouch header. This was our 150th game in the European Cup, including qualifiers. Future red Raul Meireles came off the bench for the visitors, with Lisandro López bagging the first of his two goals against the reds. Red farewells 2015 – Legendary defender Gerry Byrne died. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times. We fell behind to a Les Massie goal while skipper and centre-back Dick White was off the field injured, one of his four strikes past us. He arrived from Sävedalens IF in January 2011, signing a contract extension three years later. However, he left for Utrecht in August 2014. In charge 1994 - Steve McMahon was appointed Swindon Town Manager. He was in charge for 201 games as the Robins were first relegated from the First Division, and then bounced straight back as champions. He was sacked in September 1998. 2007 - Ex-reds reserves forward Paul Jewell took over as boss of Derby County, who were firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premiership. He resigned in December 2008 having failed to save them from relegation. 2013 – Recent Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was sacked as Bristol City boss, having been in charge for just ten months. 2022 – Former Academy coach Michael Beale was appointed Manager of Rangers. He was sacked after eleven months in charge. Cally for England 1962 - Ian Callaghan won the first of his three England Under-23’s caps in their 5-0 friendly thumping of Greece at St. Andrews. David Jack struck the last two of his nine goals against the reds, with Joe Hulme scoring one of his ten past us. John Radford netted one of his seven goals against the reds, with George Graham coming off the bench to bag one of his four past us. Earning our Spurs We have faced Tottenham Hotspur three times in top flight matches on this day in history, resulting in one win, a draw and two defeats. 2010 – We lost 2-1 in north London, despite Jermain Defoe missing a penalty. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring before putting through his own net in the second half. Jamie Carragher dislocated his shoulder late on before Aaron Lennon bagged an injury-time winner. 2012 – We lost by the same score there, with Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale both scoring early on. A Stephen Ireland volley was City’s hundredth home League goal against the reds, while a Javier Garrido free-kick four minutes before the break ensured City reached 200 goals against us in all competitions. Fernando Torres netted our thousandth goal in the Premier League before heading in a second to draw us level after Pablo Zabaleta was dismissed for a foul on Xabi Alonso. Dirk Kuyt grabbed a dramatic stoppage-time winner as we won 3-2, while Martin Škrtel suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out of action for over two months. 1914 – We thumped City 6-3 in our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at their old Hyde Road ground. He signed from Rankin Boys in August 1956, turning professional in May 1958. Big post-war wins 1946 - We thumped Grimsby Town 6-1 at Blundell Park, thanks to a brace apiece from Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell, a Willie Fagan penalty and a Jack Balmer goal. 1957 - We hit five without reply at home to Doncaster Rovers in a Second Division fixture, with Tony Rowley and Jimmy Melia both netting twice and Louis Bimpson also on the scoresheet. 1963 - Ian St. John scored as he reached a century of reds outings, with Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson also on target as we beat Aston Villa 5-2 at Anfield, with the scoring rounded out by a double from Roger Hunt. The return was not played for another year, when we drew 2-2 to claim the trophy for the third and final time. Management moves 1995 – Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Internazionale. He led them to seventh in his first season, and then to third and the UEFA Cup Final in the following campaign. He was then tempted to return to England to take over at Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 1997. 2009 - Steve Staunton was named as Darlington boss, taking over two days later. He was sacked in March 2010 with the Quakers at the bottom of the League and facing relegation to the Conference. Young debutants 2011 – Jack Robinson struck his first goal for England Under-19’s while winning his fifth cap in their 2-2 draw with France in the Limoges Tournament. Adam Morgan made his debut at this level, with Conor Coady skippering the side. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori struck his only goal for Portugal at this level in the same competition as they drew 1-1 with Ukraine. 2001 - Chris Kirkland won his first England Under-21’s cap as a reds player, playing alongside future red Jermaine Pennant in their 2-1 defeat of Greece in a European Championships qualifier at Ewood Park. Also on the move 2020 – Three ex-reds were on the move. Winger Bobby Adekanye joined Cádiz on loan from S.S. Lazio, with forward Jerome Sinclair making a temporary switch from Watford to CSKA Sofia. Adekanye only made five appearances before his loan was ended early, with Sinclair scoring three times in 27 outings. Meanwhile, winger Kristoffer Peterson left Swansea City to sign for Fortuna Düsseldorf, having struck once in just twelve games for the Swans.
