Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Jordan Henderson headed us in front early on, but Raúl Jiménez equalised after the break as we conceded our first League goal for more than twelve hours. Roberto Firmino struck the winner. Cup wins We have twice won FA Cup Fourth Round ties 3-0 on this day in history. 1971 - John Toshack, Ian St. John and Chris Lawler netted as we beat Swansea City at Anfield on our way to the Final. This was the Saint’s 425th and final game for the club. 1982 - We won at Sunderland with Kenny Dalglish grabbing a brace and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, we lost at Chelsea at the very next hurdle. Tons up 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th reds game as Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell and John Evans scored with full-back Frank Lock putting through his own net and Sonny Walters nabbing the last of his four strikes past us. 1915 – We lost 2-1 to The Wednesday at Hillsborough with left-back Bob Pursell reaching a century of reds games. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 1904 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. 1961 – Former Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura was born in A Coruña, Spain. He joined the reds in June 2009 having led Olympiacos to the League and Cup double, moving on in September 2012. 1974 - One-time winger Bernard Diomède was born in Saint-Doulchard, France. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He served a ban and subsequently returned to the Riverside, playing 27 times for Boro in total. 2005 – Future red Daniel Agger was sent off for Denmark Under-21’s in an unofficial international against a Panama ‘A’ side, with the game ending 2-2. Four for Milan again 2003 - Milan Baroš scored four for the reserves as they trounced Bradford City 5-0 at the Deva Stadium in Chester. This was the second time that he had knocked four past the Bantams, following a similar performance the previous August. Dietmar Hamann made his comeback from injury in the same game. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed for Blackpool, playing sixteen times in his first campaign with the Tangerines. 2020 – Victor Moses joined Internazionale on loan from Chelsea, failing to score in twenty games in Italy. 2019 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Olympique de Marseille, scoring eight times in fifteen games for the French side. On the same day, full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Rochdale from Blackpool, after eleven games for the Seasiders. Meanwhile, full-back Calum Woods joined Bradford City on a free transfer from Preston North End. 2018 – Forward David N’Gog signed for Ross County, netting once in ten outings. On the same day, left-winger Albert Riera announced his retirement from playing. 2017 – Winger Lazar Marković joined Hull City on loan, scoring twice in fourteen outings. 2009 - Emile Heskey joined Aston Villa from Wigan Athletic for £3.5m, after sixteen goals in 88 outings for the Latics. 2007 - Dominic Matteo joined Stoke City on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers. He struck once in 25 outings for the Potters, often operating as a midfielder. 2003 - Charlie Adam signed for Rangers. He struck eighteen times in 86 games before moving to Blackpool in August 2009 for a club record £500,000, after several loan spells away from Ibrox. 2002 - Reserves defender Alan Navarro was sold to Tranmere Rovers for £225,000, playing 48 times before joining Accrington Stanley in September 2005. 1996 - Reserves forward Lee Jones re-joined Wrexham on loan. He struck nine times in 26 games while on loan at the Racecourse Ground. Reds skippers 2008 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf captained Senegal as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Ghana. 2006 – Diouf also featured as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a group game in Egypt. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they beat Peru 2-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” group game in Venezuela. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi featured for Morocco as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani played for Algeria as they lost 1-0 to Ghana in another group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Sadio Mané also featured that day as Senegal drew 1-1 with South Africa. 2012 – Future red Assaidi played as Morocco lost 2-1 to Tunisia in Gabon. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in an Olympics qualifier. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani featured as Italy Under-15’s lost 3-1 to Brazil. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of the USA. Other reds games 1988 – Peter Beardsley and John Barnes scored as we beat Charlton Athletic 2-0 at Selhurst Park 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 3-3 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough nabbing two of his ten goals past us. Kenny Thomson put through his own net with Dave Hickson and Roger Hunt also on target to hand us a 3-1 half-time lead. Bill Harris equalised through a late spot-kick. 1926 – We beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield with Dick Forshaw netting twice and Cyril Oxley also scoring, while Elisha Scott saved an Alf Baker penalty. Forshaw’s second came with just fifteen seconds left, with the referee momentarily dazed so Tom Bromilow blew the final whistle! 1909 – Joe Hewitt and Ronald Orr struck as we won 2-0 at Bradford City. Bruno le père 2007 – Ex-reds midfielder Bruno Cheyrou and his wife Constance welcomed a son, Nino, in France. On the same day, Shane O’Connor played for the Irish Under-17’s, while future red Lucas captained Brazil as they beat Uruguay 3-1 in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" game in Paraguay. -
Ged takes charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a reds game for the first time as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the first two of his seven strikes past us. Debutants galore 1970 - John Toshack made his reds bow as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City, with ex-red Geoff Strong being given a rapturous reception as he led his new side out. Winger Peter Thompson made his 300th League appearance for us. 1925 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson debuted in our 2-0 home defeat of West Bromwich Albion, with Cyril Oxley bagging a brace, his first reds goals. 1914 – Half-back Charles Hafekost played his only senior reds game as Middlesbrough held us to a 1-1 top-flight draw at Anfield, with Fred Pagnam on target and George Elliott netting one of his eight strikes against the reds. 1953 - Right-back Don Campbell made his debut as we lost 3-2 at Sunderland, with Sammy Smyth scoring both our goals. Billy Elliott bagged a brace for the home side, with George Aitken also on target. 1931 - We also played a First Division match at Roker Park, with Dave Wright netting twice in our 3-1 win and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Bobby Gurney bagged one of his sixteen strikes in just fifteen games against the reds. Happy birthdays 1956 - Israeli defender Avi Cohen was born in Cairo in Egypt. He only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career after signing for £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv in July 1979, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. 1937 - Left-back Phil Ferns was born in Liverpool. The local lad struck once in 28 reds games after signing on at Anfield in September 1957. He made enough appearances in 1963/64 to claim a League title medal but moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in August 1965. 1971 – Academy Manager Alex Inglethorpe was born in Epsom in Surrey. He left Tottenham Hotspur in November 2012 to move to Melwood as Reserve Team Head Coach. 2002 – French centre-back Billy Koumetio was born in Lyon. He signed as a professional in August 2020, making his senior bow in a UEFA Champions League game at Midtjylland four months later. On the same day, reds youngster Ryan Wilkie played for Scotland Under-18’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Germany. Good fortune against PNE 1896 - We drew 1-1 at Deepdale with Bill Michael nabbing our goal. 1908 - Robert Robinson and Joe Hewitt struck as we beat Preston North End 2-1 in another top-flight meeting at Anfield. Herbert Danson nabbed one of his four goals against the reds. Un-fair defeat 1967 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, going down 2-1 at TSV 1860 München, although we progressed to the Third Round 9-2 on aggregate. Half-back Willie Stevenson became our first ever European substitute, coming on for Tony Hateley in this game. Ian Callaghan grabbed our goal that evening to put us nine ahead on aggregate, with Tommy Smith rattling the bar late on. Wilfried Kohlars netted twice for the home side. Tommy’s century 1964 – Keeper Tommy Lawrence played his hundredth reds game as we beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Peter Thompson and Roger Hunt. World Cup goals 1984 - Future red John Barnes netted a brace in England’s 8-0 demolition of Turkey in Istanbul. Fellow future red Mark Wright won his fourth full cap in the same game. On the same day, ex-red Graeme Souness captained Scotland as they beat Spain 3-1 at Hampden Park, with Kenny Dalglish on target with his thirtieth and final international goal, equalling Denis Law’s record. Steve Nicol won his third cap in the same match. Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson, Jan Mølby, Ian Rush, future red Glenn Hysén and ex-red Kevin Sheedy also played in qualifiers that same day. 1987 - Hysén captained Sweden in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Italy. Mixed fortunes in World Cup play-offs 2001 - Future red Milan Baroš was sent off late on as the Czech Republic lost 1-0 to Belgium in Prague, as they fell at the final hurdle in qualifying for the World Cup in the far east. Vladimír Šmicer also played, while there was better news as Baroš had now played enough international games to make his work permit application to join the reds likely to succeed. Dietmar Hamann and ex-red Christian Ziege were more fortunate, as Germany beat the Ukraine 4-1 in Dortmund to reach the Finals. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song and future red Fernando Morientes both featured in friendlies. 1999 – Hamann and future red Ziege also played for Germany in their 1-0 friendly win in Norway, with Vegard Heggem, future red Markus Babbel and ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen all also featuring. Red farewells 1959 – We lost a Second Division encounter 4-2 at Lincoln City with Dave Hickson and Roger Hunt on the scoresheet. Andy Graver bagged the last two of his five goals against the reds, with Bert Linnecor grabbing one of his five and John McClelland also scoring. This was Phil Taylor’s last game as Manager before resigning, with keeper Doug Rudham appearing for the 66th and final time. Jack’s treble 1942 - Jack Balmer bagged a hat-trick as we beat Chester 5-1 at their Moss Road Ground in a Wartime League fixture. Len Carney and Willie Fagan were also on target. Unlucky thirteen 1990 - Gary Gillespie won his thirteenth and final international cap in Scotland’s 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw in Bulgaria. Future red Gary McAllister won his sixth cap in the same game. On the same day, Ian Rush struck the only goal of Wales’ Euro ’92 qualifier in Luxembourg, playing up front alongside future red Dean Saunders. Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen also featured in another qualifier. First and last caps 1990 - Steve McMahon and Jan Mølby both also made their final international appearances. McMahon won his seventeenth cap in England’s 1-1 Euro ’92 qualifying draw in the Republic of Ireland, with Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan, ex-red John Aldridge and future red Mark Wright all also playing. On the same day, Mølby won his 33rd cap as Denmark lost 2-0 in another qualifier against Yugoslavia in Copenhagen. 2012 – Mario Balotelli won his last cap as a Manchester City player as Italy lost 2-1 to France in a friendly in Parma, with future red Mamadou Sakho on the winning side. Future red Christian Benteke scored as Belgium lost a friendly 2-1 in Romania, with Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet also featuring. Management joy 2008 - Rafael Benítez was named Barclays Manager of the Month for October, having led us to four League wins out of four that month, as well as a victory and a draw in the Champions League. On the same day, Mark Wright was appointed Manager of Chester City for the third time. He could not save the club from relegation from the Football League and resigned the following June. Starting out 2019 – Future red Diogo Jota made his senior international bow as Portugal thumped Lithuania 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Faro. 2012 – Raheem Sterling made his senior England bow in Roy Hodgson’s side’s 4-2 friendly defeat in Sweden, to celebrate the opening of the Friends Arena in Solna. Steven Gerrard won his hundredth cap while skippering a team that also included Glen Johnson, while Daniel Sturridge won his last cap as a Chelsea player, with ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić on the winning side. Luis Suárez netted as Uruguay beat Poland 3-1 in Gdansk. Future red Loris Karius won his only cap for Germany Under-20’s in their 2-1 defeat in Poland. Other international reds on the scoresheet 2019 - Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bagged his first goal for England as a reds player in their 7-0 trouncing of Montenegro at Wembley. Takumi Minamino scored in his fifth consecutive game for Japan, winning his last cap as a Red Bull Salzburg player as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Kyrgyzstan with Wataru Endō appearing for the final time while with Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging. Meanwhile, Naby Keïta captained Guinea and scored his first goal as a red in their 2-2 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying draw in Mali. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and ex-red Brad Smith also played for their countries that day, with Rigobert Song taking charge of Cameroon Under-23’s. 2012 - Lazar Marković scored his first goal for Serbia, and only one as a Partizan player, as they beat Chile 3-1 in a friendly in Switzerland. He arrived for £3.5m from Blackburn Rovers in June 1999, and made a total of 205 appearances without scoring, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä and helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 as well as another League Cup two years later. He joined Celtic on a free transfer in January 2005, and spent a season playing for Premiership new boys Wigan Athletic, before returning to Ewood Park for two injury-hit seasons. 1993 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart was born in Enfield. He arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2014 on a free transfer, making twenty senior reds appearances without scoring before joining Hull City in July 2017. 1988 – Ex-reserves striker Craig Lindfield was born in Greasby on the Wirral peninsula. He struck in a pre-season friendly at Crewe Alexandra in July 2006 on his first appearance for the senior side, but failed to make a first-class appearance for the reds, and was released in August 2009. Trigger pulled 1995 - Birkenhead-born Jason McAteer signed from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m, which was still their record transfer fee received until Nicolas Anelka’s £15m departure for Chelsea in January 2008, just five months after impressing against the reds in the Coca Cola Cup Final. This was Emlyn’s 300th League game for the reds. 1903 - Sydney Smith bagged a treble as we beat Manchester City 6-5 in a friendly at Anfield. Edgar Chadwick, Alex Raisbeck and Jack Cox also netted. 1921 - We also faced City, drawing 1-1 at their old Hyde Road ground, with Harry Chambers on target for the reds. Johnny signs on 1956 – Half-back Johnny Wheeler signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000, joining his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield. He made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone giving the home side a three-goal half-time lead, with Zieliński bagging his second straight after the break. Chris Lawler and Steve Heighway scored in the first half before Brian Hall converted a penalty after the break. 2012 – Ex-red Fernando Torres won his hundredth senior cap in Spain’s 5-0 friendly thumping of Saudi Arabia in Pontevedra. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have faced Manchester United three times in top-flight fixtures on this day in history, with differing results. 1907 - We were thumped 4-0 at their old Bank Street ground, with forward Sam Bowyer making an unhappy debut. Strikers on the move 1961 - Ian St. John signed from Motherwell for a club record £37,500. He went on to bag 118 goals in 425 reds games, helping us to two League titles, our first ever FA Cup, Second Division championship and FA Charity Shield before joining South African side Hellenic in February 1971. 1897 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker arrived from Leith Athletic. He struck three times in twelve reds games, returning to his former club for free in August 1898 1938 – Bill Kinghorn joined the reds from Queen’s Park. He netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1979 - Future red John Aldridge signed for Newport County from South Liverpool for £3,500. He netted 83 times in 198 games for County. Cally honoured 1974 - Ian Callaghan was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, surprisingly becoming the first red ever to win this honour since its launch in 1948. 2008 - Fernando Torres was voted runner-up in the same awards, with ex-red David James in third. Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner. Happy birthdays 1981 - Chris Kirkland was born in Leicester. He only appeared 45 times between our sticks after signing from Coventry City for £6m in August 2001, while suffering from a succession of injuries, and moved to Wigan Athletic in October 2006 for a reported £3.5m after a successful loan spell. 1904 - Outside-right Cyril Oxley was born in Worksop. He signed from Chesterfield for £2,000 in October 1925 and bagged six goals in 34 games before moving to Southend United in September 1928. 1997 – Midfielder Matty Virtue was born in Epsom. He was Under-23’s skipper, moving on to Blackpool in January 2019. Red farewells 2018 – Ragnar Klavan featured in his 53rd and last reds game as we lost the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final 4-2 at Roma, our first defeat in the competition that season, to progress 7-6 on aggregate. Sadio Mané and Gini Wijnaldum both scored inside the first half hour, either side of an unfortunate James Milner own goal. Edin Džeko gave the home side hope with the latest of his five goals past us before Radja Nainggolan added two late strikes, including a stoppage-time penalty. 2010 – Yossi Benayoun played his 134th and final reds game prior to joining the visitors as we meekly surrendered 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield, thus helping to ensure they won the League title ahead of Manchester United and that we could not qualify for the following season’s Champions League. Didier Drogba pounced on a stray Steven Gerrard back-pass to open the scoring with one of his eleven goals past us, with Frank Lampard also on target with last of his eight. Daniel Ayala also made his final senior appearance, his fifth. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored his 44th and last reds goal, converting a spot-kick in a 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, to continue his hundred per cent record at penalties for us, with his eighth successful conversion. Emile Heskey grabbed the other goal. 1956 – Don Welsh took charge of the reds for the last time as we lost our final game of the season 2-0 at Lincoln City to finish the season in third in the Second Division. 1925 – Full-back Ted Parry made his thirteenth and final reds appearance as we drew 1-1 at League champions Huddersfield Town, benefiting from a Tommy Wilson own goal as we finished the season in fourth. Five against the Hammers 1998 - We thumped West Ham United 5-0 at home in the Premiership. Michael Owen, Jason McAteer, with a brace that included his final reds goal, and Øyvind Leonhardsen all scored before the break, with ex-Hammer Paul Ince wrapping up the scoring in the second half to ensure our place in the UEFA Cup for the next season. 1931 - We also played the Hammers as Gordon Hodgson struck twice in our final game of the season to hand us a 2-0 win at Anfield, as we finished ninth in the top flight. This was the sixth consecutive game in which he had netted. The worst season ever 1955 - We finished the season with a 6-1 thumping at Rotherham United, ending up in our worst ever final League position, eleventh in the Second Division. The great Billy Liddell bagged our consolation with Ian Wilson netting four goals, with Jack Grainger and Dennis Pell also on target for the Millers. Champions! 1988 - We were presented with the League Championship trophy, along with the new Barclays trophy, before our 1-1 Bank Holiday Monday home draw with Southampton. John Aldridge put us in front just before half-time, with Rod Wallace equalising with the first of his five strikes against the reds. Also recently 2015 - Philippe Coutinho gave us a first-half lead over Queens Park Rangers before Leroy Fer equalised after the break. Nedum Onuoha was sent off for the visitors and Steven Gerrard had a penalty saved by Robert Green, although he went on to head in a late goal as we won 2-1 with Lazar Marković making his 34th and last reds appearance. 2021 – Our League visit to Manchester United, due to be played behind closed doors due to COVID restrictions, was called off before kick-off due to protests by the home fans against their owners. Colin for the only time 1981 - Forward Colin Russell played his only reds game as Sunderland won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Stan Cummins goal. Future Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce played his final game for the visitors. A Tiny mistake 1936 - We lost 2-1 in our final game of the season as we finished nineteenth with Stoke City securing their joint highest ever League placing, ending up fourth in the top flight. Fred Howe netted for the reds with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw putting through his own net and Jim Westland also on target for the home side. This was George Patterson’s last game in his second spell in charge of the reds. Injured 1992 – John Barnes had to limp off during our goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday with an injury that ruled him out of the FA Cup Final the following weekend. Danny stays 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Agger agreed a new contract until 2014, later further extended. He struck fourteen times in 232 reds games since signing from Brøndby IF for £5.8m in January 2006, before returning there for a reported £3m in August 2014. Reds against reds 1984 - Alan Kennedy and Sammy Lee faced Ian Rush in a British International Championships game at the Racecourse Ground. It was Barney’s second and final cap. Future red Mark Wright made his England debut, while his future clubmate Paul Walsh won his fifth and last cap. Ex-red Joey Jones also played as the home side won 1-0 thanks to a Mark Hughes goal. Also in international action 1956 – Future reds keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Austria at Hampden Park. 1962 – Ian St. John featured as Scotland lost 3-2 to Uruguay at the same venue. 1978 – Future reds coach Joe Corrigan played for England Under-21’s as they drew the second leg of their European Championships Semi-final 1-1 with Yugoslavia at Maine Road, losing out 3-2 on aggregate. 2002 – Carl Medjani captained France Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to fellow future red Arnaud Bühler’s Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark. 2006 – Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Lithuania in Bełchatów. 2007 – Future reds Victor Moses and Mamadou Sakho both played in European Championships Finals group games in Belgium. 2019 – Luke Chambers and Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-15’s as they lost a penalty shoot-out after their friendly meeting with the USA ended 1-1. -
Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. Winger Peter Thompson reached a century of reds outings in this game. 1971 – Peter Thompson played his 400th game for the club as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to an Emlyn Hughes goal as we finished the League season in fourth, ahead of the FA Cup Final. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy of a Brian Talbot goal at Highfield Road, one of his six strikes against the reds, who went on to l1999ose the Final to Second Division West Ham United. 1996 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless Premiership draw at Highbury. This was the first time since three substitutes were permitted for League games four years previously that we did not name a keeper on the bench, with Mark Kennedy, Ian Rush and Michael Thomas getting the nod. Luis and Mo the best 2014 - Luis Suárez was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings as we came close to claiming the League title. 2018 - Mohamed Salah won the same award, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. On our way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his ninetieth European game in our Champions League Semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Anfield, breaking Ian Callaghan’s club record. Daniel Agger converted a cleverly-worked free-kick to take the tie into extra time, following our single goal defeat in the first meeting. Dirk Kuyt had an effort ruled out for offside, and also hit the woodwork before Pepe Reina was the hero in a penalty shoot-out that we won 4-1, saving from both Geremi and Arjen Robben. Kuyt struck our decisive fourth spot-kick. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Striking legends in and out 1990 - Kenny Dalglish made his 515th and final appearance in our 1-0 home defeat of Derby County, thanks to a goal from Gary Gillespie, as we were awarded our eighteenth, and most recent, League title. He was aged 39 years 58 days, a post-war club record. This game had been postponed from February. 1972 - We also faced the Rams, losing a First Division fixture 1-0 at the Baseball Ground thanks to a goal from John McGovern. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris joined from Mansfield Town for a £7,000 fee. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games, moving on to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. 1914 – Defender Ernest Peake moved on to Third Lanark. He joined the reds as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. 1899 – Forward Peter Kyle arrived from Clyde for £100, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse in May 1900. On the same day, Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie moved on to Woolwich Arsenal after netting eleven times in 35 games since signing from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896. Other arrivals 1973 - Jimmy Case signed from South Liverpool for £500. He went on to net 46 times in 269 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1902 – Keeper Peter Platt arrived from Blackburn Rovers, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall signed from Leith Athletic. He scored twice in 21 reds games, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. Crashing out? 2019 – We lost 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final to leave our chances of reaching the Final in Madrid hanging by a thread, despite a decent performance. Ex-red Luis Suárez opened the scoring before Lionel Messi added a late brace. Gary Mac yet again 2001 - Gary McAllister scored for the fifth straight game in our 2-0 win at Bradford City as we headed towards the Champions League. Michael Owen nabbed the other goal in a game that was originally postponed the previous December. Also recently 2017 – Emre Can struck a spectacular goal, the only one of our trip to Watford. 2016 - We lost 3-1 at Swansea City, with left-back Brad Smith seeing red. André Ayew struck twice for the home side, with Jack Cork also on target, as Christian Benteke scored for the reds. 2012 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio played his 134th and last reds game as Fulham won for the first time at Anfield, so completing their first ever League double over us. A presentation was made to Brian Hall before the game, marking his retirement as Public Relations Manager, a post he had held since 1991. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as ex-reds reserve Alex Kačaniklić attempted to convert John Arne Riise’s cross for the only goal. 2011 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty and Luis Suárez struck, with ex-Toon star Andy Carroll making a late cameo from the bench. Replay 86 2006 - The Replay 86 game was played at Anfield in front of 32,947 in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal. The two sides were representing the 1986 FA Cup Final teams, and the only goal came in the final minute, through former reds reserves striker John Durnin. Also against the Blues 1937 - Jack Balmer was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield in the final game of a League campaign that saw us finish in a disappointing eighteenth, just three points clear of relegation. Dickie Spence netted one of his six goals against the reds. On the same day, Bill Shankly was on the losing side at Wembley, as Preston North End lost 3-1 to Sunderland in the first FA Cup Final to be played in the month of May. Goals galore 1978 - King Kenny grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, with Phil Neal adding a penalty. 1926 - Forward Tommy Reid scored both goals on his reds debut in our 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United, with outside-right Cyril Oxley playing his 34th and final reds game as we finished the season in sixth place. Harry Johnson scored two of his seven goals past us. 1999 - Less happily, Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we came from 2-0 behind at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield in the League, having already scored an own goal in the reverse fixture that season! Paul Ince struck with Steve McManaman netting his 66th and final reds goal after Jamie Redknapp’s spot-kick. Spurs’ Mauricio Taricco was sent off just before the break while Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Bjørn Tore Kvarme both played their final reds games, with the young Steven Gerrard instrumental in our comeback after coming off the bench at half time. Steffen Iversen had netted the other goal for the visitors. 1943 - Cyril Done struck for the fourth consecutive game, grabbing a brace as we beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in our Lancashire Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield, with Thomas Pearson and Jackie Campbell also on target. This game also counted towards the Wartime League. 1979 - We also faced the Trotters in a game originally postponed from three months earlier, when Ray Kennedy netted twice and David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish were also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win in wintry conditions at Burnden Park, with the home side’s score coming from a Graeme Souness own goal. Bolton keeper Jim McDonagh said afterwards, “Liverpool are perfection. This team would have been good enough to win the 1978 World Cup!” Eleven in a row 1982 - We won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, our eleventh successive League win - a joint club record with 2013/14, and tenth straight win in all competitions, a then club record. Craig Johnston bagged both goals. Bob off the mark 1948 – Left-half Bob Paisley struck the first of his twelve reds goals as ended the season in tenth by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Another trophy 1946 - We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup. Bill Jones and Harry Eastham netted for the reds, with the Blues’ Purvis putting through his own net. Jameo off 1993 - David James was dismissed at Norwich City on the hour mark with David Phillips netting the only goal of the game past Mike Hooper from the subsequent spot-kick, as he became the first substitute keeper to take the field for the reds in the Premier League, in his 73rd and final senior reds appearance. This was a vital result as we finished in sixth, three places and three points behind City who reached the UEFA Cup, which we failed to do. English reds 1964 - Roger Hunt scored in England’s 3-0 victory over ‘Young England’. 1996 - Michael Owen netted a brace for the Under-16’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships group game in Austria. 2002 – David Mannix and David Raven both played for England Under-17’s in their goalless draw with host nation Denmark in a European Championships Finals group game. 2012 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of the senior England side. 2016 – Curtis Jones struck as England Under-15’s lost 7-5 to Croatia, with clubmates Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan also featuring. An English treble 1935 - Sam English scored a hat-trick as we beat Exeter City 3-1 in a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray at St. James Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933. First and last caps 1985 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player, and nineteenth in all, as Norway held the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. His former clubmates Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan all also featured. Ex-red Avi Cohen and future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright all also won international caps that day. 1991 - Poland’s European Championships qualifying visit to Lansdowne Road also ended goalless. This was the twentieth meeting between the countries, with John Aldridge winning his final cap as a Real Sociedad player, and 39th in total. Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. John Barnes, Steve Nicol, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Istvan Kozma, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Gary McAllister, Colin Pascoe, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Dean Saunders all also represented their countries on the same day. Moving on 1992 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén signed for GAIS, having been released by the reds after three goals in 93 outings since signing from Fiorentina for £600,000 in June 1989. He helped us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. Sadio the champion 2022 - Sadio Mané had a penalty saved as the Africa Cup of Nations Final ended goalless between Senegal and Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in Cameroon. Senegal won a penalty shoot-out 4-2, with Mané converting the winning kick. Dirk strikes again 2010 - Dirk Kuyt headed in his fiftieth reds goal from a corner, in his 181st game for the club, to secure a 1-0 derby victory at Anfield. Centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Marouane Fellaini, despite taking the ball, with both Fellaini and Stephen Pienaar lucky to avoid red cards in the first half. Pienaar was eventually dismissed in stoppage time. Off the mark 2022 – Luis Díaz made his reds bow with Harvey Elliott striking his first reds goal as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 in our FA Cup Fourth Road encounter at Anfield, en route to winning the trophy for the eighth time. The game was goalless at half time, but Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino netted before Elliott’s goal. American issues 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that the Board had agreed the terms of an offer from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks to buy the club. The takeover subsequently went through when shareholders agreed to the deal near unanimously, although the honeymoon period rapidly came to an end, and they finally left the club in October 2010. 2016 – A mass walkout was staged in the 77th minute of our home game against Sunderland in protest at planned ticket price increases, of up to £77, with a new pricing structure rapidly introduced afterwards. After a goalless first half, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana put us two goals ahead before the crowd thinned out. However, Adam Johnson and Jermain Defoe, with his fourth of six strikes past us, ensured the game ended level, with boss Jürgen Klopp missing the game due to a recent appendectomy. Biting the hand that would feed 2011 - Future Blue Raul Meireles bagged the only goal at Stamford Bridge, as Fernando Torres’ Chelsea debut ended in anonymous disappointment. Many happy returns 1916 - Legendary forward Jack Balmer was born in West Derby, Liverpool. He quit Everton where he had been an amateur for Anfield in May 1935, signing on professionally three months later. He bagged 110 goals in 309 reds games, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later and coached the reds after retiring from playing in May 1952. 1908 - Right-back Willie Steel was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire. He failed to score in 128 reds games after signing from St. Johnstone in September 1931, before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. 1903 – Forward James Clark was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from his hometown club for £3,000 in January 1928 and bagged eleven goals in 42 games, before moving joining Nottingham Forest in July 1931. On the same day, forward Bob Clark also came into the world. He signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. He struck eleven times in 42 outings before joining Nottingham Forest in July 1931. 1978 - Ex-reserves defender Gareth Roberts was born in Wrexham. He left Anfield in August 1999 for Panionios in Greece. Yet another shut out 1988 - We secured a club record tenth consecutive clean sheet as we were held to a draw at home by West Ham United. Manager Kenny Dalglish was presented with his third Bell’s Manager of the Month award prior to kick-off. 2012 – We were held to a goalless draw by Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield as Luis Suárez returned from a nine-match ban. Dom off 1999 - We beat Middlesbrough 3-1 in a League game at Anfield, with Michael Owen, Vegard Heggem and Paul Ince netting. Dominic Matteo was sent off for a professional foul. Boro’s late goal from Phil Stamp was the first we had conceded on this day since 1956. Happy birthday Gary Mac 1964 - Gary McAllister was born in Motherwell. He arrived on a free transfer in July 2000, proving inspirational in the run-in to the treble that season. He netted nine goals in 87 reds games before moving back to Coventry City as Player/Manager in May 2002. He returned to Anfield as a First Team Coach last summer, moving into an ambassadorial role after Brendan Rodgers was sacked. 1896 – Winger Chris Harrington was born in Edge Hill. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Rushie starts out 1979 - Ian Rush signed as a professional for Chester. He bagged seventeen goals in 39 games at Sealand Road, before moving to Anfield for £300,000 the following April. He struck nineteen times in 222 reds games across his first six seasons, helping us to keep 96 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. Up against the Trotters 2011 – We secured a last-minute 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in front of 35,400, the lowest League attendance at Anfield since Portsmouth visited on a Tuesday evening in December 2004. Kevin Davies headed the visitors in front with the last of his four goals against us, but Fernando Torres equalised early in the second half, with Joe Cole grabbing a dramatic late winner. 2007 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to a fantastic scissor-kick volley from Peter Crouch and strikes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, with all the goals coming in the second half. Dirk’s goal was our 900th in the Premier League. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. Luther Blissett scored a first-half penalty, but Ian Rush headed in a late leveller. 1955 – We beat Derby County 2-0 in a home Second Division encounter, with Brian Jackson and Billy Liddell scoring. 1948 – Charlton Athletic won 3-2 at Anfield. Ray Minshull put through his own net before Charlie Vaughan handed the Addicks a two-goal half-time lead with the first of his four strikes against us. Bill Robinson extended their lead further, before Albert Stubbins reduced the arrears with a late brace. 1935 – We lost 2-0 at Middlesbrough, with Tim Coleman netting two of his nine goals past us. 1926 – Aston Villa lost 3-1 at Anfield as Dick Forshaw netted twice with Cyril Oxley also scoring before the break. Len Capewell then scored a consolation with one of his of his six goals against us. 1921 – We won 2-0 at Villa Park thanks to first-half goals from Dick Johnson and Harry Chambers. Uncle Joe’s debut 1946 - Joe Fagan made his debut for Manchester City in a 4-0 defeat of Fulham at Maine Road. Ablett’s able start 1986 - Gary Ablett made his reds bow, replacing the injured Alan Hansen as we held Charlton Athletic to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. He went on to net just once in 147 games for the reds. Centre-forward Alan Irvine also made the first of his four senior reds appearances in this game. 1924 – Full-back James Garner played the first of his five senior reds games in our goalless Anfield top-flight encounter with Bolton Wanderers. Bienvenue Nicolas 2001 - Nicolas Anelka signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. He netted five times in 22 reds games, but was not taken on permanently at the end of the season. Red departures 1922 – David Ashworth resigned as reds boss. He had moved to Anfield from Stockport County in December 1919, remaining in charge for three years. He led us to our third League championship in 1922, but left in the middle of the following campaign when we retained the title to return to Oldham Athletic for family reasons. 1934 – Scottish inside-left Archie McPherson left the reds to sign for Sheffield United. He had signed from Rangers in November 1929, bagging nineteen goals in 133 reds games as we endured a barren spell. He appeared for the Blades in the FA Cup Final as they lost to Arsenal at Wembley in 1936. Rob starts out 1988 - Rob Jones signed as a professional for Crewe Alexandra. He made ninety appearances for the Alex, and even managed to bag two goals, something he never managed at Anfield. Luis banned 2011 - Luis Suárez was banned for eight matches and fined £40,000 after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra two months earlier. On the same day, young forward Jordon Ibe signed from Wycombe Wanderers for a reported £750,000. 2013 - Suárez signed a new contract. However, he moved on to Barcelona the following July for a club record £75m. Most recently 2015 – We lost 3-0 at Watford. Births and deaths 2001 – Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg was born in Zwolle. He signed from PEC Zwolle for an initial £1.3m in June 2019, so far making four senior appearances, all in cup competitions. 2002 – Brazilian keeper Marcelo Pitaluga was born in Niterói. He joined the reds in October 2020 from Fluminense. He has so far sat on the first-team bench on four occasions. 1972 - Ex-reserves midfielder Kevin Lampkin was born in Liverpool. He signed professional terms at Anfield in May 1991 but failed to break into the first team. He went on to play League football with Huddersfield Town and Mansfield Town. 1911 – Forward John Parkinson died. He arrived from his hometown club Blackpool in May 1899, but only played once before returning to the Seasiders in May 1900. 1984 - Outside-right Cyril Oxley died. He signed from Chesterfield for £2,000 in October 1925 and bagged six goals in 34 games before moving to Southend United in September 1928. Double stalemate with PNE We twice drew with Preston North End in First Division meetings on this day soon after the Second World War. 1947 - Bill Jones, Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins netted in our 3-3 draw at Deepdale. Willie McIntosh struck two of his four goals against the reds, with Andy McLaren also scoring as left-back Barney Ramsden played his 62nd and final game for the club. 1952 - Our next senior game on this day saw the Lilywhites hold us 2-2 at Anfield, with Liddell and Kevin Baron on target. Angus Morrison struck the last of his four goals past us, with Jimmy Baxter also on target. Derby stalemate 1919 - We held he Blues to a goalless draw at Goodison, with Everton keeper Tom Fern in fine form. This was David Ashworth’s first game as reds boss. Tommy’s century 1958 – We won a Second Division fixture 3-2 at Grimsby Town. We were two down before Fred Morris pulled a goal back before the break. Louis Bimpson and Alan A’Court scored in the second half as keeper Tommy Younger reached a century of League outings for the reds. Golden boy Raheem 2014 - Raheem Sterling won the Golden Boy award for 2014, voted for by journalists from across Europe as the outstanding top-flight player aged under 21 across the continent. Up against the Blues 1983 - Graeme Souness was on the scoresheet with his fiftieth gioal for the club as we drew our League Cup Fourth Round tie at Birmingham City, with Mick Harford equalising with one of his six strikes against the reds. 1930 - We also visited St. Andrews, when we lost a First Division match 2-0, with George Briggs scoring two of his ten goals past us. Roy’s quit 2001 - Roy Evans resigned as Second Division Swindon Town’s boss after just four months in charge. They had only lost six of his 26 games. 2005 - Roy Hodgson resigned as Manager of Norwegian side Viking F.K. Stavanger, having already taken charge of the Finland national team. Reds in Sudan 1982 - Kenny Dalglish was on target as we held a Khartoum XI to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Sudan, with rolling substitutions permitted in the heat. The game was played just two days after our most recent League fixture and was arranged after persistent requests from the Sudanese President. Graeme Souness announced to the rest of the squad on the flight over that he had agreed a new three-year contract, with the players ‘celebrating’ by sticking Sammy Lee into one of the plane’s overhead lockers! Other reds games 1980 – Ray Kennedy netted the only goal of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ visit to Anfield. 1975 – We beat Queens Park Rangers 2-0 in L4. John Toshack scored with Phil Neal converting a penalty. 1913 – Ken Campbell saved a penalty from Joe Kitchen with Tom Miller on target as we won 1-0 at Sheffield United. 1902 – Arthur Goddard and Jack Cox struck as we beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 at Anfield before Grenville Morris bagged the first of his six goals against the reds. Forest defender George Henderson had to go off with a dislocated elbow after twenty minutes, returning briefly but failed to reappear after the break. Loaned out 1996 - Nigel Clough joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Manchester City. He struck once in thirteen games in this second spell at the City Ground, before returning to Maine Road. 2000 - Robbie Keane joined Leeds United on loan from Internazionale. He notched nine times in twenty games before signing on permanently in May 2001. Stone rolled on 1984 - Reserves forward Paul Jewell was sold to Wigan Athletic for £15,000, going on to bag 47 goals in 171 games for the Latics. In international action 1967 – Emlyn Hughes and Tommy Smith both played as England Under-23’s beat Italy 1-0 at the City Ground in Nottingham.
