Stevie at the treble 2010 - Steven Gerrard scored a second-half hat-trick as we came from behind to beat SSC Napoli 3-1 in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, only the second reds substitute to net a treble, which included a penalty. Ezequiel Lavezzi put the visitors ahead, who included ex-red Andrea Dossena in their ranks. Five thousand goals 1990 - Ian Rush’s second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was our 5,000th goal in top-flight League football. Peter Beardsley also netted for the reds, having come on in place of John Barnes early in the first half. Bruce Grobbelaar reached a personal milestone in this game, playing for the reds for the 500th time as we won for the tenth time in our opening eleven League matches. Gary Lineker netted Spurs’ consolation, the last of his six strikes past us. We have visited Spurs twice more for First Division matches on this day in history. 1922 - Harry Chambers bagged a brace with Cyril Gilhespy netting his third and final reds goal and Dick Forshaw also on target as we won 4-2. 1967 - Roger Hunt struck as we held them to a draw, with Welsh winger Cliff Jones bagging one of his five strikes against the reds. Recent milestones 2006 - Jamie Carragher played his 300th League game as a Dirk Kuyt brace was enough to see off Reading at Anfield in our first ever League encounter. 2009 - Andriy Voronin played his fortieth and final reds game as we held Olympique Lyonnais to a 1-1 draw in their Stade Gerland, before being replaced by goalscorer Ryan Babel. Unfortunately, Lisandro López bagged a late equaliser. 2012 – Steven Gerrard played his 600th game for the club as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Newcastle United. Yohan Cabaye put the visitors ahead just before the break, with Luis Suárez bagging a sublime equaliser midway through the second period. 2017 – Keeper Simon Mignolet skippered the side for the first time as we thumped West Ham United 4-1 at their London Stadium. Mohamed Salah and Joël Matip scored inside the first half an hour, with Manuel Lanzini pulling a goal back after the break. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain soon restored our two-goal lead, with Salah then adding his second. Razor sharpened 1987 - Ray Houghton notched his first reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane, with Steve McMahon reaching a century of appearances for the club. Cally off the mark 1961 - Ian Callaghan struck the first of his 68 reds goals as we won 3-1 at Preston North End in a Second Division match, our most recent League visit. Preston-born Gordon Milne netted against his former club with Ian St. John also on the scoresheet as we secured our first win there in thirteen attempts. 1895 - We also visited Deepdale when Jimmy Ross netted as we lost a testimonial played for Preston’s Bob Holmes 2-1. 1907 – Preston won a Lancashire Senior Cup Semi-final 2-1 at Anfield, with left-half Jim Bradley nabbing our goal. 1911 - John Bovill bagged his first reds goals, striking twice in our 3-0 defeat of Notts County at Anfield. Arthur Goddard was also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday Gerd 1982 - Neil Mellor was born in Sheffield. He struck six times in 22 senior appearances for the reds, before moving to Preston North End in August 2006 for a reported £0.5m. Kettle’s debut 1975 - Left-back Brian Kettle made his reds debut in our 6-0 UEFA Cup Second Round thumping of Real Sociedad, as we went through 9-1 on aggregate en route to our second triumph in the competition. David Fairclough struck his first reds goal in just his second game with Phil Neal also scoring for the first time as centre-half Max Thompson appeared for the second and last time. Ray Kennedy nabbed a brace with John Toshack and Steve Heighway also on the scoresheet, while Kevin Keegan blasted a penalty over the bar. Thumping the Mancs 2001 - A Michael Owen brace and a John Arne Riise belter gave us a 3-1 win over Manchester United in an 11:30 kick off, to record our third victory over them that year, and third straight League win for the first time since December 1979. David Beckham netted for the visitors. 1944 - We also hosted them in Wartime League match with Don Welsh netting twice, including a penalty, in a 3-2 victory, as we also benefited from a Roughton own goal. Spanish stalemate 2008 - We had to rely on a stoppage-time Steven Gerrard penalty to secure a 1-1 draw with Club Atlético de Madrid in our home UEFA Champions League group game. Future red Maxi Rodríguez had given the visitors the lead, with Fernando Torres again missing out against his former club due to injury. The spot-kick we were awarded was generous, but we had already been denied two much better shouts. Ex-red Luis García featured against us. Meanwhile, new Argentina boss Diego Maradona declared that he wanted Javier Mascherano to take over as captain of his country. 2014 – We lost 1-0 at Real Madrid in another group game with Karim Benzema on target, one of his four goals past us to date. This was our third consecutive defeat and third consecutive game without scoring in Europe, both joint club records. Players of the year 2006 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the sixth time in eight years. 2003 - John Arne Riise was named the Norwegian PFA Player of the Year for the second year running. Four against 2000 - Mark Viduka scored four goals as Leeds United won a 4-3 thriller at Elland Road, the first of his six strikes against us. Christian Ziege scored his first reds goal, with Sami Hyypiä and Vladimír Šmicer also on target, while Patrik Berger suffered a serious knee injury. This was the first time an opposing player had notched four times against the reds since Jimmy Greaves for Tottenham Hotspur in April 1963. For King Billy 2004 - A plaque in honour of Billy Liddell was unveiled at Anfield. Off against the Russians again 1992 - Mike Marsh was sent off late on in Spartak Moskva’s 2-0 win at Anfield as we crashed out of the European Cup Winners’ Cup 6-2 on aggregate at the Second Round stage. This followed Bruce Grobbelaar’s dismissal in the first leg, and Paul Stewart’s in our preceding game to complete an unwelcome treble. A rare strike against 1978 - Forward John Hawley scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as Leeds United left with a point after using rough-house tactics to help secure a 1-1 draw. Terry McDermott was on target for the reds from the spot. Phil Neal had earlier struck a penalty against a post as we dropped points at home for the first time that season, in our seventh home fixture. An Anfield treble 1950 - Chilean forward George Robledo scored a hat-trick for Newcastle United as they won 4-2 at Anfield, the first of his five strikes against us, with Ernest Taylor netting one of his five goals past the reds. Our goals came from Jimmy Payne and a Billy Liddell penalty as keeper Cyril Sidlow played his 165th and last reds game. 1995 - We also lost at St. James’ Park, with Ian Rush grabbing our goal in a 2-1 defeat. Les Ferdinand bagged one of his six goals past us, with Steve Watson also scoring for the Geordies. 1893 - However, we thumped them 5-1 at Anfield when Patrick Gordon struck twice with Harry Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Jimmy Stott all also on target in our Second Division meeting, the first time we had ever faced the Geordie outfit. These were the first reds strikes for both Bradshaw and Dick. Also in Europe 1970 - We moved into the Third Round of the Fairs Cup, holding Dinamo Bucureşti to a draw on their own patch to progress 4-1 on aggregate, with our equaliser coming from substitute Phil Boersma, the first of his thirty reds goals. 1981 - A thrilling night at Anfield ended in a 3-2 defeat of the previous season’s losing UEFA Cup Finalists AZ’67 Alkmaar, as we reached the Third Round of the European Cup 5-4 on aggregate. The Dutch champions equalised twice after a Terry McDermott penalty and an Ian Rush strike before Alan Hansen won it with five minutes to go. Alkmaar’s second equaliser came from a 25-yard shot from future Nottingham Forest star Johnny Metgod that bounced down from the crossbar and onto Phil Thompson’s foot for a bizarre own goal. Kees Kist scored in both legs for the Dutch side. 1997 - We beat Racing Club de Strasbourg 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a penalty from Robbie Fowler and a late goal from Karlheinz Riedle. This was our hundredth win in Europe, excluding those secured through penalty shoot-outs or coin tosses. However, this was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit as we went out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. A rare defeat 1989 - Coventry City won at Anfield for the first time, at the 23rd attempt, when Cyrille Regis struck the only goal of the game, the last of his four strikes past us. Elisha’s last 1933 - Elisha Scott won his 27th and last cap as a reds player as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. He went on to win 31 in total, remaining the last red to achieve full international honours with the province until Ryan McLaughlin in May 2014. Facing the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire Senior Cup in the 1930’s, without tasting defeat. 1939 – We won a First Round tie 3-1 at Burnden Park, with Phil Taylor netting twice and Willie Fagan also on target. 1931 – We were held to a 1-1 Third Round draw at Anfield, with Jimmy Smith nabbing our goal. In and out 2002 - Young ex-reds midfielder Neil Prince was released by Torquay United, just three months after arriving at Plainmoor. He had made eight appearances for the Gulls, and then moved into non-League football. 2010 – Icelandic midfielder Victor Pálsson joined Dagenham & Redbridge on loan, for whom he played three times. He left Anfield to sign for Hibernian in January 2011. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh re-signed for MTK Hungária, scoring in his only League outing before joining Dutch side RKC Waalwijk two months later. On the same day, future red Tiago Ilori played for Portugal Under-19’s as they trounced the Faroe Islands 9-1 in a friendly. 2022 - Pako Ayestarán was appointed Assistant Head Coach of Aston Villa, working under Unai Emery. 1903 - Right-back Alf West signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s for £500. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. Other reds games 1972 – We beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield with Kevin Keegan adding to a John Toshack brace. 1933 – Sam English and Gordon Hodgson netted as we won 2-1 at Birmingham City. After the game, Chairman W.H. Cartwright went into the dressing room to inform English that he had just become the father of a baby daughter. 1905 – We beat Bury 3-1 in L4 with Bobby Robinson scoring twice and John Carlin also netting. 1899 – John Hunter and Tommy Robertson were on target as Sheffield United held us to a 2-1 draw at Anfield. Youngsters for England 2021 – Jayden Danns bagged a brace, his only goals for England Under-16’s, as they beat Belgium 3-2 in a friendly in France. 1964 - Future red David Wilson won his seventh and final cap for England Under-23’s as they beat Wales 3-2 in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground. Keepers on the move 2005 - Paul Harrison joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, having been released from Anfield at the end of the previous season. He never made their first team, soon moving on to Chester City. 2003 – Aussie custodian Brad Jones joined Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough. He played seven times, returning for another spell a year later. 1983 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Hartlepool United on loan from Sunderland. He turned out for them three times in the Fourth Division.

Clinching the title 1979 - A 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield handed us our eleventh League title, thanks to goals from Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott. We ended the season with a record 68 points and record goal difference of +69, having only conceded sixteen League goals during the entire campaign. This game was originally postponed from New Year’s Day. The arrival of an Anfield legend 1939 - Left-half Bob Paisley signed from Bishop Auckland for a £10 signing-on fee, and £5 per week. He served the club well in his 277 games, notching twelve times, before joining the training staff. He eventually succeeded Bill Shankly in 1974, becoming the most successful manager in English football history. 1894 - A rather less notable Anfield servant arrived in L4. Defender James Cameron signed from Rangers, going on to make only four first-team appearances. 1909 – Outside-left John McDonald also arrived from Rangers, netting four goals in 81 reds games before joining Newcastle United in May 1912. 1933 - Left-back Jack Tennant arrived at Anfield from Torquay United. He went on to appear 42 times for the reds without notching before joining Bolton Wanderers in January 1936, later guesting with the reds during the war. Cup final disappointment 1971 - Arsenal completed the double, beating us 2-1 at Wembley in the FA Cup Final. Steve Heighway opened the scoring in extra time before Eddie Kelly equalised for the Gunners. Charlie George grabbed the winner with the first of his five goals past us - cue one very famous flat-out celebration. Future red Ray Kennedy appeared for the Gunners. 1972 - We also faced Arsenal, holding them to a goalless draw at Highbury. 2005 - Our third meeting with the North London outfit on this day in history ended in a 3-1 defeat at Highbury that ensured we would finish behind Everton in fifth place, although the glory of Istanbul was just around the corner. Steven Gerrard bagged our goal while playing his 200th League game, while Robert Pires netted the last of his four goals past us, with José Antonio Reyes and Cesc Fábregas also scoring. 2012 - Three days after losing out to the Blues in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, we saw off Chelsea 4-1 at Anfield with the reds wearing special ‘Seeing Is Believing’ sponsored kits. Michael Essien’s own goal following fine work from Luis Suárez opened the scoring, with Jordan Henderson doubling our lead after one of many errors forced on John Terry. Daniel Agger headed in from a corner before Fernando Torres and Stewart Downing each hit the woodwork, with Downing then placing a spot-kick onto the post, a club record seventh penalty miss of the season, excluding shoot-outs. Ramires pulled a goal back for the visitors before Jonjo Shelvey completed the scoring. 2001 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Chelsea. Michael Owen bagged a brace, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink twice drawing the visitors level, two of his seven goals against the reds. Heading towards second 2002 - We beat Blackburn Rovers 4-3 at home, having lost the lead three times before Emile Heskey finally won the game late on, to keep us on course to finish second in the League. Danny Murphy, Nicolas Anelka and Sami Hyypiä were the other scorers, with Andrew Cole netting one of his eleven goals past us, and Damien Duff and Matt Jansen also on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that we were holding talks with French club Sedan over the possible transfer of Salif Diao. Final acts 2016 – Joe Allen struck his seventh and last goal for the club as we beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino also on target. 2004 - Emile Heskey bagged his sixtieth and final reds goal as we won 3-0 at his next club Birmingham City. Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard also struck, while the Blues had Kenny Cunningham sent off. 1982 - We also won at St. Andrews, with Ian Rush netting the only goal of the game. The Anfield Iron is forged 1963 - Tommy Smith made his reds bow in our 5-1 League defeat of Birmingham City at Anfield. This was the first official game we ever played on this day in history. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Gordon Wallace scoring his first reds goal and Ian St. John and Ian Callaghan also netting. Shanks for the last time 1974 - Bill Shankly took charge of his last official reds game as we drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in a game postponed from two months earlier, to end the season in second place, five points behind champions Leeds United. Centre-back Max Thompson made his reds bow, becoming our youngest League debutant to date, aged seventeen years and 129 days, just fifteen days younger than Michael Owen was on his debut 23 years later. Steve Heighway was on the scoresheet, while Ian Callaghan was making his 500th League appearance and left-back Alec Lindsay played his 200th game for the club. 1993 - We also faced Spurs, winning 6-2 at Anfield in our final game of the season as we finished sixth, with many fans expecting this to be Graeme Souness’s last game in charge, although he was actually watching Coventry City entertain Leeds United at the time. Ian Rush and John Barnes grabbed a brace each, with Rushie’s first being his 300th reds goal. Mark Walters netted his nineteenth and last goal for the club, with the reds also benefitting from a Stuart Nethercott own goal that was initially credited as Steve Harkness’s first reds strike. Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Teddy Sheringham penalty, our first spot-kick save at Anfield in the Premier League. Sheringham got on the scoresheet anyway with one of his seven goals against the reds, as did Steve Sedgley for the visitors. First strikes 1964 - Forward Bobby Graham scored his first reds goal as we trounced Boston Metros 8-1 in the first friendly on our US tour. Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John both bagged braces, with Phil Chisnall, Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith also on target. 2021 - Thiago Alcântara bagged his first reds goal late on in our 2-0 defeat of Southampton behind closed doors at Anfield, after Sadio Mané had headed in the opener as Jürgen Klopp secured his hundredth Anfield win in all competitions. Heading off 1999 – Midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri made his second and final reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday thanks to a late Richard Cresswell header. Ferri came on as a late substitute for Jamie Redknapp. 1970 – Left-back Peter Wall was sold to Crystal Palace for £30,000. He had arrived at Anfield from Wrexham in a deal that cost us £35,000 for him and full-back Stuart Mason in October 1966. He failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield but had greater success with the Eagles. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. Managerial comings and goings 2012 - Nick Barmby was sacked as Manager of Hull City, after making disparaging comments about the owners and transfer funds. He had led them to thirteen victories in 33 games in charge. 2001 - Mark Wright was appointed Manager of basement side Oxford United. He only won four of the 22 games in which he was in charge, resigning after just six months at the Kassam Stadium, following accusations of racism. 1992 - Phil Neal was sacked as Bolton Wanderers boss, after nearly seven seasons in charge. He led them to the Freight Rover Trophy Final in his first campaign, before the Trotters were relegated to the basement division the next year, but immediately bounced back into the Third Division. He could not lead them any higher, despite twice making the play-offs. He also helped them to claim the Sherpa Van Trophy in 1989. Future reds starting out 1980 - Nigel Spackman signed for Bournemouth from Andover on a free transfer. He played 131 times for his first professional club, bagging ten goals as they were promoted to the Third Division in his second season. 1994 - Sami Hyypiä scored his first goal in the Finnish Premier League as Myllykosken Pallo-47 drew 1-1 with HJK Helsinki. 1863 - One-time reds trainer William Connell was born in Stockport. International debutants 1963 - Midfielder Gordon Milne made his full international debut as England drew 1-1 with Brazil in a friendly at Wembley. 1932 – Ex-red reserves outside-left Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State for the first of four times in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Netherlands in Amsterdam. 2018 – Future red Ryan Gravenberch debuted for the Dutch Under-17’s as they beat Spain 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in England. Kenny on target 1976 - Future red Kenny Dalglish netted in Scotland’s 3-0 British International Championships defeat of Northern Ireland at Hampden Park. Meanwhile, Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson faced John Toshack as England won 1-0 in Cardiff. European joy and despair 1968 - Roger Hunt appeared for England as they beat Spain 2-1 in Madrid to reach the Semi-final of the European Championships 3-1 on aggregate. 2006 - Future red Krisztián Németh appeared for Hungary Under-17’s as they lost 2-0 to Spain in a European Championships Finals group game in Luxembourg. 2007 – Future red Damien Plessis played for France Under-19’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying victory over Poland in Israel. Beating the Blues 1962 – Ronnie Moran scored the only goal of our Liverpool Senior Cup Semi-final encounter with Everton at Goodison Park. Alex off 2008 – Former First Team Coach Alex Miller quit the club to take over as Manager of JEF United Ichihara Chiba in Japan. However, his contract was terminated in July 2009. Other reds milestones Two ex-reds defenders have been released by other clubs on this day in history. 2003 - David Burrows left Sheffield Wednesday after 23 games in his one year at Hillsborough as they struggled in the First Division. 2008 – Stephen Wright was on his way from Sunderland, having made 105 appearances and netted twice. He is now on the coaching staff at Wrexham. Birth and death 2009 – Danish centre-half Daniel Agger became a father to a son, Jamie. 1955 - George Patterson died in Liverpool. He joined the reds as Assistant Secretary in 1908, taking charge of the team as Tom Watson’s successor as Secretary in 1918. He returned to a purely backroom role during 1919/20. He took charge again in 1928 when Matt McQueen retired, remaining in charge until 1936 at which point he once again reverted to a less front-line position, staying at Anfield until 1938. Also in international action 1943 – Ray Lambert featured as Wales drew 1-1 with England in a Wartime International at Ninian Park. 1957 – Tommy Younger played for Scotland as they beat Spain 4-2 in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park.

Happy birthday Ronnie 1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. He died in March 2017. 1980 – Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen was born in Asnæs. He was signed by Roy Hodgson for £4.5m from Juventus in August 2010 and played 21 reds games without scoring, moving on to French side Évian Thonon Gaillard a year later. 1973 - Goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero was born in Castellón de la Plana. He played for a variety of clubs in Spain, including Real Murcia, and joined the staff at Melwood in July 2007 after José Ochotorena left to join Valencia. He then followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale. 1962 – Former Head of the Academy medical department Dave Galley was born in Stoke-on-Trent. He had roles with Port Vale, Fulham, Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday before joining the reds as a physiotherapist in the summer of 1999. He returned to the club in 2009, moving on to Sunderland a year later. Another record for Rushie 1995 - Ian Rush equalled Denis Law’s FA Cup scoring record of 41 goals as we beat Wimbledon 2-0 at Selhurst Park in a Fifth Round replay. John Barnes was also on target. Rush went on to net 44 FA Cup goals in total, still a competition record. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in the next round. Wembley disappointment 2016 – We lost the League Cup Final to Manchester City on penalties. Fernandinho put the Sky Blues ahead shortly after the break, with Philippe Coutinho equalising to send the game into extra time. Emre Can converted the first spot kick before Fernandinho missed. However, Lucas, Coutinho and Adam Lallana’s efforts were all saved as we lost the shoot-out 3-1. Seven thousand goals 2021 – Curtis Jones opened the scoring behind closed doors at Sheffield United as we won 2-0. Roberto Firmino’s strike deflected off Kean Bryan in what was our 7,000th goal in top-flight football, becoming the second club to reach that landmark. Off the mark 1987 - John Aldridge bagged his first reds goal to hand us a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Anfield. Centre-forward Alan Irvine made his fourth and final senior reds appearance in this game, coming on as a substitute for Gary Gillespie, with Ian Rush moving back into midfield to accommodate him. 1981 - We also entertained the Saints, with Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott on target in a 2-0 win. 1914 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl struck his first reds goal in our 2-2 draw at Oldham Athletic, with Arthur Metcalf also on target. Centre-forward Tommy Gracie played his 34th and final reds game, while right-back Ephraim Longworth put through his own net, with Ollie Tummon also on target. 1920 – Notts County were beaten 3-0 in L4, thanks to Albert Pearson’s fourth and final reds goal, with Jackie Sheldon and Tom Miller also on target. Red trebles 1931 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick, including a penalty, in a 5-2 home League win over Blackpool with centre-half Norman James making his reds bow. Archie McPherson added a brace as Jimmy Hampson netted the first of his six goals against the reds and Jack Oxberry also on target. 1953 - Louis Bimpson bagged all three goals in our 3-2 friendly defeat of Burnley. Carra the top personality 2005 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Merseyside Sports Personality of the Year in a ceremony organised by the Liverpool Echo. Friedel’s debut 1998 - Brad Friedel made his reds bow in a 2-1 League defeat at Aston Villa. Michael Owen bagged our goal from the spot, with ex-red Stan Collymore netting both of the home side’s goals in John Gregory’s first game as Villa boss. 2001 - Friedel won his 67th cap for the USA, his first one as a Blackburn Rovers player, in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Mexico. The game was played in the Columbus Crew Stadium, where he used to play his club football.
