Souey the skipper 1982 - Graeme Souness captained Liverpool for the first time, leading us to an impressive 4-0 win at John Toshack’s Swansea City in the Third Round of the FA Cup. Phil Thompson had been stripped of the captaincy following our Boxing Day defeat to Manchester City that left the reds twelfth in the table. Alan Hansen scored in his 200th reds game with Ian Rush bagging a brace and Mark Lawrenson also on target. On the same day, ex-red Ian Callaghan played in his 88th FA Cup game as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-1 at home to Sc***horpe United, with 79 of these games played while with Liverpool. Stevie on his way out 2015 - Steven Gerrard announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. He made 710 appearances for the reds in total, notching 186 goals, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 2018 – Pepijn Lijnders left the coaching staff to take over as Manager of N.E.C. in the Netherlands. He was sacked four months later, returning to Melwood as Assistant Manager in June 2018. 1936 – Left-back Jack Tennant moved on to Bolton Wanderers. He had arrived at Anfield from Torquay United in May 1933, appearing 42 times without notching, later guesting with the reds during the war. Swapping right backs 2006 - Josemi joined Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp. Josemi was Rafael Benítez’s first signing, joining us from Málaga for £2m in July 2004, but made just 35 reds appearances. Kromkamp only stayed with the club for eight months, playing eighteen times, including a substitute appearance as we won the FA Cup later that year. A fab century 2022 – Fabinho played his hundredth League game for the reds in our 2-2 draw at Chelsea. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah put us two goals ahead, but Mateo Kovačić and Christian Pulisic both struck before the break to level the scores. Jürgen Klopp and Alisson Becker both missed the game due to suspected positive COVID tests. Running down the wing 1981 – Argentine winger Maxi Rodríguez was born in Rosario, Santa Fe. He bagged seventeen goals in 73 reds outings after signing for free from Club Atlético de Madrid in January 2010, returning to his native land to re-join Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in July 2012. Also in the Cup 1971 - We beat Aldershot 1-0 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, who were then 92nd in the League and managed by ex-red Jimmy Melia, with John McLaughlin grabbing the only goal, his last for the reds. Emlyn Hughes played his 200th reds game that day. The final Ox 2023 - We lost 3-1 at Brentford as Ibrahima Konaté put through his own net with Yoane Wissa also on target in the first half. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Came off the bench to net his eighteenth and final goal for the club shortly after the break, but Bryan Mbeumo completed the scoring late on. Also recently 2020 – We beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield to maintain a thirteen-point lead at the top of the table, with Mohamed Salah on target early on. Sadio Mané scored after the break to ensure we went a full year unbeaten in the Premier League. On the same day, Alisson Becker was named as the winner of the Samba d'Or for 2019, given to the best Brazilian playing in Europe, the first keeper to win this award. 2017 – We drew 2-2 at Sunderland as we took the lead twice through Daniel Sturridge and Sadio Mané, but Jermain Defoe levelled twice from the spot, the last of his six strikes past us. 2016 – We lost 2-0 at West Ham United, thanks to headed goals from Michail Antonio, one of his five past us, and ex-red Andy Carroll. 2008 - We succumbed to a late Titus Bramble strike as Wigan Athletic scored their first ever League goal against us to secure their first point against any of the ‘big four’ in 21 attempts, cancelling out a Fernando Torres effort, his sixteenth goal of the season. This was the sixth time that Steve Bruce had led a side against us in the Premier League, and he had yet to taste defeat in these fixtures. 1995 - We thumped Norwich City 4-0 at home to bring us to a maximum twelve points over the festive period, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, John Scales and a Robbie Fowler brace. On the same day, future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason played for Iceland Under-17’s as they beat the host nation 2-1 in the Israel Tournament. 1996 – Guðnason played for the Under-19’s as they lost 5-1 to Hungary in the same tournament. 2006 - We drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium, failing to equal a club record eleven consecutive League victories. Steven Gerrard converted a penalty with Luis García grabbing our second equaliser, with Radhi Jaidi and ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target for the home side. 1954 - We also faced the Trotters with John Evans netting the first of his 53 reds goals in the second minute as we lost 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield, their most recent League victory in L4. Willie Moir bagged one of his five goals past us, with Dennis Stevens also scoring. Kewley’s moment in the spotlight 1978 - Local forward Kevin Kewley made his one and only appearance in the reds first team when he came on as a substitute for Terry McDermott in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough. Goals from David Johnson and Steve Heighway secured the points for the reds. Kewley’s senior Anfield career must rank as one of the shortest ever, as he left the club the following month to join Dallas Tornado in the USA. 1939 - We also faced Boro, going down 3-0 at Ayresome Park with left-back Keith Peters playing his only reds game. Micky Fenton netted two of his nine goals against the reds, with Jackie Milne also on target. Kenny in the wars 1984 - Kenny Dalglish had his jaw broken by Kevin Moran’s support brace on his hand as we drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford with Craig Johnston nabbing our goal, followed by a late equaliser from Norman Whiteside, one of his four goals past us. Kenny later signed Moran when he was Manager at Blackburn Rovers. Shanks’ first 1960 - Jimmy Melia nabbed the only goal of our Second Division fixture at Hull City to secure Bill Shankly’s first away win as Manager. Cameron’s last 1893 – Forward Jonathan Cameron scored his fifth and final reds goal in our 4-1 win at Fairfield in the Lancashire League. Hugh McQueen, John Miller and Tom Wyllie were all also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2013 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield, with Luis Suárez setting up Raheem Sterling who lobbed Simon Mignolet to open the scoring before the Uruguayan bagged himself a brace. 1911 – We were thumped 4-0 at Roker Park, with Jackie Mordue netting one of his six goals against the reds, Tim Coleman nabbing one of his nine past us and George Holley and John Cowell also on the scoresheet. Passing on 1949 - Right-half Jock McNab died in Bootle. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games, having signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919. 1995 – Midfielder Ian Frodsham died from a spinal tumour, aged just nineteen. He had joined as an Under-11, turning professional when he was seventeen. An indoor arena at the Academy in Kirkby was named in his honour, as well as an award for the young player of the year. Two ton Maurice 1909 – We went down 3-0 at Chelsea. Jimmy Windridge scored before George Hilsdon scored one of his five goals past us from the spot. Fred Rouse was also on target for the Blues as right-half Maurice Parry played his 200th League game for the reds. Twice against the Geordies and Blades 1922 - We drew 1-1 at Newcastle United, with Dick Forshaw on the scoresheet early on. 1932 - Harold Barton struck twice as we won 4-2 in L4, with Gordon’s Gunson and Hodgson also on target. 1899 - We won 2-0 at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Johnny Walker and Jack Cox. 1897 - Sheffield United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, just twenty-four hours after we had won 4-1 at Bolton Wanderers. No longer the boss 1954 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager of Grimsby Town. They had finished second in the Third Division North in his first season in charge, but he could not match that in either of the subsequent two campaigns, leading them to victory in 62 of his 118 League games. 2001 - John Toshack resigned as Manager of Saint-Étienne to take over at Real Sociedad for the third time. He had been in charge at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard for just two months. On the move 2007 - Young defender James Smith joined Ross County on loan. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, in our Carling Cup win over Reading at Anfield in October 2006. 2009 – Left-back Robbie Threlfall joined League One Stockport County on loan. He only played twice before returning to Anfield. 2014 – Ex-youth team keeper Ian Dunbavin joined Chesterfield on loan from Accrington Stanley. On the same day, centre-forward Adam Morgan signed for Yeovil Town on a free transfer, scoring just once in nineteen games for the Glovers before joining Accrington Stanley in June 2015. 2017 – Ex-reds forward Ryan Babel signed for Turkish side Besiktas JK, netting 29 times in 86 outings before moving to Fulham two years later. On the same day, centre-back Ben Davies joined Fleetwood Town on loan from Preston North End, netting once in 26 outings. 2020 – Ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips joined Morecambe on loan from Burnley, netting four times in eleven outings in this first spell with the Shrimps. On the same day, keeper Lawrence Vigouroux signed for Leyton Orient on an eighteen-month deal. Fallen idols 2001 - Robbie Fowler was attacked while out on the town for the evening. The club said, “Although the player’s injuries are not serious, Robbie is obviously upset and shocked.” 1904 – We hosted Nottingham Forest in a top-flight fixture that ended goalless. Forward Sam Raybould played his first game after a seven-month ban for agreeing a move to Southern League side Portsmouth that was deemed illegal by the Football League. Other reds games 2010 – We drew an FA Cup Third Round tie 1-1 at Reading, with Steven Gerrard equalising after Simon Church had given the Royals the lead. However, we crashed out in the Anfield replay. 1965 – We won 3-2 at Blackpool with the home side taking a two-goal half-time lead through a brace from Ray Charnley, two of his seven goals against the reds. Roger Hunt struck twice before Ian St. John headed in the winner. 1937 – Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe netting our goal. 1928 – Burnley held us to a 2-2 draw in L4 with Dick Edmed opening the scoring. Louis Page scored two of his seven goals past us, with Tommy Reid netting our equaliser. 1926 – Leicester City won 3-0 at Anfield, with Arthur Lochhead bagging the first of his five goals past us and Hugh Adcock also netting one of his five before the break. Arthur Chandler then nabbed one of his six strikes against the reds. 1915 – We lost 3-1 at Notts County, with Tom Miller opening the scoring for the reds on the stroke of half time. Jack Peart struck the last of his four goals against us before Sam Richards and George Dale scored late on. Young Razor at home 1973 – Future red Ray Kennedy played for England Under-23’s as they beat the Netherlands 3-1 at his club ground Highbury. -
Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly died in January 2012, aged just 46. 1993 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was born in Camden, north London. He left Tottenham Hotspur to join the reds in 2014, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2016 after a successful loan spell there. Red farewells 1977 - John Toshack made his 246th and final reds appearance in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City, setting up the goal for Kenny Dalglish. 1898 – Left-back Tom Wilkie played his 64th and last game for the club as we lost 3-0 at Bury as Jimmy Settle struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Michael Kelly also on target. Anfield trebles 1921 - Centre-forward Danny Shone bagged a treble in our 4-0 defeat of Middlesbrough, with Tommy Lucas adding a penalty. 1927 - We faced Boro again in the First Division, holding them to a 1-1 draw at Ayresome Park, with Harry Chambers on the scoresheet. 1932 - Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds trebles as we thrashed Derby County 6-1 in a top-flight meeting, with right-back Bob Done playing his hundredth League game. Dave Wright and Syd Roberts also netted to add to a George Collin own goal. Peter Ramage’s consolation was one of his five strikes past the reds. Crouchie not yet off the mark 2005 - Steve Finnan reached a century of reds games as we beat Portsmouth 3-0 at Anfield. Peter Crouch saw his penalty saved as he still awaited his first goal for the club. Fortunately, Bolo Zenden converted the rebound and Djibril Cissé and Fernando Morientes were also on target to secure victory. We ended the game with ten men after Xabi Alonso had to limp off after we had used all three of our substitutes. This was Alain Perrin’s final game as Pompey boss. Tons up 2016 – Emre Can played his hundredth reds game as we drew 0-0 in a League game at Southampton, despite dominating the game. 2000 - We reached a century of goals against under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. Robbie Fowler nabbed our consolation strike, with Les Ferdinand netting the last of his six strikes against the reds, and Tim Sherwood scoring the final one of his three goals past us. Leeds thumped 1966 - We secured our record equal victory over Leeds United as goals from Chris Lawler, Peter Thompson, Ian St. John and a Geoff Strong brace handed us a 5-0 top-flight win at Anfield. 1955 - We also faced Leeds, going down 4-2 at Elland Road in a Second Division encounter. Billy Liddell netted from the spot, with Alan Arnell also on the scoresheet for the reds. John Price played his only senior reds game this day, at left-back. The legendary John Charles bagged a brace for the home side, with Harold Brook and Jack Overfield also on target while full-back Ray Lambert played his 342nd and last game for the reds. More births and a death 1994 – Reserves forward Jack Dunn was born in Liverpool. He scored while making his first senior appearance in our post-season friendly at Shamrock Rovers in May 2014, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in June 2017 after being released by the reds. 1993 – Spanish midfielder Jesús Fernández Sáez, known as Suso, was born in Cádiz. He signed on as a professional on his seventeenth birthday, having left his hometown club the previous summer. He made 21 senior appearances, scoring once before signing on with AC Milan in January 2015. 1931 - Defender Ernest Peake died. He arrived as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. The cup can be cruel 1892 - We suffered our first ever FA Cup defeat, losing 2-1 to Northwich Victoria at their Drill Field ground in the Third Qualifying Round. Tom Wyllie scored our consolation, while outside-left Andrew Kelvin was making his sixth and last reds appearance. Ton up for Jan 1986 – Coventry City held us to a goalless draw in our League Cup Fourth Round tie at Highfield Road as Jan Mølby reached a century of reds games. We won the replay a week later, going on to reach the Final once again that season. Eph at home with the League 1919 - Right-back Ephraim Longworth played for the Football League in their 2-2 draw with an Irish League side at Anfield. Future reds on target 2014 – Chelsea’s Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 2-1 in Tunisia. Kolo Touré, ex-red Carl Medjani and future reds Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané all also featured in qualifiers that day. 2008 – Milan Jovanović struck twice as Serbia thumped Bulgaria 6-1 in a friendly in Belgrade. 1974 - David Johnson bagged a brace as England Under-23’s won 3-2 in a friendly in Portugal, with future red Alan Kennedy putting through his own net. 1980 - Michael Robinson scored his first senior international goal as the Republic of Ireland thrashed Cyprus 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson also played in what remains the Republic’s record World Cup win. Meanwhile, Terry McDermott and Phil Neal featured in England’s 2-1 World Cup defeat of Switzerland at Wembley. International beginnings and ends 2019 – Simon Mignolet won his first cap for Belgium since joining Club Brugge in their 6-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Cyprus in Brussels, with ex-red Christian Benteke bagging a brace. Gini Wijnaldum netted a hat-trick while captaining his country for the first time as the Netherlands beat Estonia 5-0 in another qualifier in Amsterdam, while ex-red Philippe Coutinho scored in Brazil’s 3-0 win over South Korea in Abu Dhabi, his only goal and last cap while on loan at Bayern München, with future red Arthur Melo playing for the last time while with Barcelona. Emre Can played for Germany for the last time while with Juventus, in their 6-1 trouncing of Northern Ireland in a qualifier in Frankfurt. Alisson Becker, Rhian Brewster, Bobby Duncan, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi, Harry Wilson, future reds Luis Díaz, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Steve Clarke, Péter Gulácsi all also represented their countries that day. 2009 – Future red Emre Can played for Germany Under-16’s in their 4-1 win in Turkey. 2018 - Ryan Babel won his last cap as a Besiktas J.K. player as the Netherlands drew 2-2 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Germany, with Virgil van Dijk on target while skippering a side that also included Gini Wijnaldum. On the same day, Curtis Jones played for England Under-18’s as they beat Belgium 3-1 in Murcia to win a friendly tournament, while Adam Lewis featured for England Under-20’s. 2003 - Future red Momo Sissoko made his debut for Mali in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Morocco in Casablanca. Meanwhile, future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones won his final cap as a Southampton player, and 37th in total, as they lost the second leg of their Euro 2004 play-off with Russia 1-0 at the Millennium Stadium. John Arne Riise faced future clubmate Xabi Alonso as Spain were 3-0 victors in Norway to win their Euro 2004 play-off 5-1 on aggregate. David N’Gog won his first cap for France Under-21’s as they beat Denmark 1-0 in Aalborg, with future red Mamadou Sakho also playing. Gems back home 2002 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle won their fifth caps for France Under-21’s in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Yugoslavia at the Stade Jules-Deschaseaux in Le Havre. Future reds keeper Charles Itandje won his first cap at this level in this game, with Grégory Vignal coming on as a substitute, while future red Xabi Alonso was also in Under-21’s action. Moving on 1999 - Ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Conference side Kidderminster Harriers. He struck four times in 24 appearances in his one season at Aggborough, before joining Southport on a free transfer. 2004 - Ex-reds winger Nicky Rizzo returned to England from Italy to sign for MK Dons. The Aussie netted five times in sixty games for the League Two outfit before returning to his native land in May 2007 to join Perth Glory. Staying put 2021 - Ex-Academy Coach Neil Critchley signed a new contract as Manager of Blackpool. He led them to a total of 45 wins in 109 games between being appointed in March 2020 and quitting in June 2022 to become Steven Gerrard’s Assistant at Aston Villa. Also in international action 2022 – Ex-red Ozan Kabak played for Türkiye as they beat Czechia 2-1 in a friendly in Gaziantep. -
In comes Chico 1981 - Steve Nicol signed from Ayr United for £300,000. He played 468 times across the defence and midfield, scoring 46 times and helping us to four League titles, European Cup, three FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield, as well as being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. He left the club to sign for Notts County on a free transfer in January 1995. 1983 – He grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. Lawler leaves 1975 – Full-back Chris Lawler left the reds to join Portsmouth, then managed by Ian St. John. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday in October 1960, striking 61 times in 549 reds appearances as he helped us to win two League titles, an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield. He later returned to the club in the 1980’s as Reserve Team Manager. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club in goal, after Bruce Grobbelaar was sent off with the score at 2-2. We went on to lose 4-2, with Mark Wright and Steve McManaman having netted for the reds and Mark Walters hitting the post. Valeri Karpin bagged a brace, including one from the spot, with Nikolai Pisarev and Igor Lediakov also netting. In and out 1937 – Inside-left Willie Fagan signed from Preston North End for £8,000, a record deal for a teenager. He netted 57 goals in 182 reds games, helping to fire us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He retired from playing in August 2013 after a series of heart problems. More births and a death 2009 – Full-back Ray Lambert died. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. The then owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team brought fellow American Tom Hicks on board and took over the club in February 2007. He arrived from Real Club Celta de Vigo for €250,000 in February 2021, debuting in our 9-0 trouncing of Bournemouth in August 2022. Merseyside rivalry on the international stage 1928 - Dixie Dean scored as England beat Elisha Scott’s Northern Ireland 2-1 at Goodison Park. He moved to the reds from his hometown club for £500 in February 1904. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games. Robbie arrives 2008 - Robbie Keane signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m. He struck seven times in 28 reds outings before returning to north London for an initial £15m fee the following February. He grabbed fifteen goals in 52 games in his second spell with Spurs before moving on to LA Galaxy for £3.5m in August 2011, while also being loaned out to Celtic and West Ham United. This was the third consecutive Under-19’s game in which he had scored. Reds firsts 2012 – Fabio Borini played his first reds game in a dour goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore on our North American tour. 2014 – Herbie Kane skippered England Under-17’s while making his debut at this level as they thumped Iceland 5-1 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also featuring. On the same day, future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-19’s in their goalless draw with Portugal in their European Championships Semi-final, with Portugal going through to the Final after a penalty shoot-out. New boys off the mark 1997 - New signing Øyvind Leonhardsen and young winger Mark Kennedy both scored their first reds goals in a 6-0 rout of Shelbourne in Dublin, each netting twice. Danny Murphy also struck his first reds goal, with Steve McManaman adding the other. Red Scots deaths 1967 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt died. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1960 – Scottish inside-right Jimmy Stewart died. He arrived from Motherwell in April 1909, bagging 26 goals in 63 outings before joining Hamilton Academical in January 1914. 1943 – Scottish outside-right Tom Wyllie died. He bagged fifteen goals in 25 senior games after signing from Everton in 1982, as well as scoring the only goal of the first ever derby meeting with his former club, in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final in 1893. He moved on to Bury later that year. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance. He was sold to Fulham for a reported £12m in July 2021 after a successful loan spell. South coast moves 2009 - Peter Crouch joined Tottenham Hotspur from Portsmouth. He had struck sixteen times in 49 outings in this second spell with Pompey. 2006 - David Thompson moved to Fratton Park, having been released by Wigan Athletic at the end of the previous season. He featured just fifteen times for Pompey before moving to Bolton Wanderers the following January. Youngsters in action 2009 – Conor Coady and future red Conor Thomas made their debuts for England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Denmark in the Nordic Tournament in Trondheim, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 2002 - Michael Foley-Sheridan appeared for the Republic of Ireland Under-19’s in the European Championship Finals third place play-off, which they lost 2-1 to Slovakia in Oslo. 1997 – Future red Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his seventeenth and last Under-19’s cap as Iceland drew 2-2 with Hungary in a European Championships group game. Olympian ends 2008 – Lucas Leiva featured for a Brazil Olympic XI in their 3-0 defeat of a Singapore Select XI in the Stadium of Singapore, in what was the last match before the stadium was demolished later that year. 2021 – Alexis Mac Allister won his ninth and final cap for Argentina Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in the Olympics in Japan, while future red Wataru Endō appeared for the host nation as they beat France 4-0 in Yokohama. On the move again 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Everton from Ipswich Town for £80,000, although he never made the first team before moving on to Luton Town for £150,000 a year later. 2005 - Ex-reserves midfielder Neil Prince signed for Conference North outfit Stalybridge Celtic three years ago, after impressing on a trial. He left in May 2007 after seventeen strikes in 84 appearances. 2010 – Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Ipswich Town for £75,000 from Cardiff City. He had failed to find the net in 79 outings for the Bluebirds. 2011 – Midfielder Momo Sissoko joined Paris Saint-Germain from Juventus for an initial €7m, netting twice in 35 outings, before having his contract terminated in September 2013. 2015 - Spanish forward Dani Pacheco joined Deportivo Alavés on loan from Real Betis Balompié, netting three times in 38 outings as they claimed the Segunda División title. 2017 – Midfielder Adam Phillips signed for Norwich City, having his contract cancelled in February 2019 having failed to make a senior appearance. To Cardiff once more 2006 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi-final. John Arne Riise’s free-kick opened the scoring before Luis García extended our lead early in the second half with a sublime volley. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. We held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic Stadium, with Ray Kennedy putting us in front with just seven minutes left before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised, to make it through to our third European Cup Final in five years, on away goals after a goalless first meeting. A first treble 1905 - Forward Sam Raybould became the first reds player to score a hat-trick against Manchester United as we beat them 4-0 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. Held by the Blues 2008 – We took the lead in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final against Chelsea shortly before half-time through Dirk Kuyt, before failing to take a number of other good chances. We suffered a sucker punch in the final seconds of time added on when John Arne Riise headed into his own net. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in four consecutive seasons. 2010 – We also suffered European disappointment, losing 1-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Semi-final at Club Atlético de Madrid, with the reds having to make the long journey to Spain by train following volcanic eruptions over Iceland causing all flights to be grounded. Baggies bouncing 1967 – West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to one of Jeff Astle’s seven goals past the reds as winger Peter Thompson appeared for the 200th time. 2012 – Peter Odemwingie struck the only goal of the game as the Baggies won at Anfield for the first time in exactly 45 years, under the management of ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson. Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt both struck the woodwork before we fell behind. Double red 1969 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City with Alun Evans and City’s Maurice Setters both sent off for fighting. Under twelve thousand 1959 - We hosted our lowest post-war League crowd of only 11,976 as we beat Sc***horpe United 3-0 in the Second Division. Alan Arnell netted his 35th and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell and Fred Morris also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday to the reserves 1956 - Left-back Brian Kettle was born in Prescot. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. He put through his own net while making his senior debut in the 5-0 EFL Cup loss at Aston Villa in December 2019, also featuring in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield two months later. He moved on to Livingston on a free transfer in January 2022. An eventful friendly for Don 1925 - Scottish left-back Donald McKinlay scored and then replaced Elisha Scott in goal after he was injured at Anfield against Aberdeen. The game ended 1-1. Beating the Blues 1944 - Cyril Done netted a treble, including a penalty, as we beat Everton 4-2 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Stan Polk also on target. 1893 - We also beat the Blues in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park, with Tom Wyllie bagging the only goal of the game in front of just 10,000 at Bootle’s ground on Hawthorne Road. Tony for the only time 1959 - Ex-reds inside-right Tony Rowley won his only senior cap for Wales. Their 4-1 defeat by Northern Ireland in Belfast was enough to hand the Ulster side a share of the British International Championships with England that season. This cap was even more special in that Rowley was a Tranmere Rovers player at the time, then in the Third Division. Welsh Englishman 2001 - John Welsh scored for England Under-16’s as they lost 3-1 to Italy in the European Championships at Bramall Lane, with future red Alberto Aquilani on the winning side. On the same day, future red Fernando Torres scored for Spain Under-21’s in their 3-0 defeat of Romania in the European Championships Finals in Durham. Future reds Rigobert Song and Kolo Touré both played in World Cup qualifying wins on the same day. 2002 - Welsh starred for England Under-19’s as they qualified for the European Championship Finals by beating Lithuania 2-1 at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with future red Jermaine Pennant on target and future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil also in action. Aquilani featured for his country again, playing for the Under-18’s as they beat Poland 2-0. Stan the Irish Villain 1998 - Steve Staunton won his 74th cap, and final one in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Argentina in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. On the same day, Abel Xavier won his final cap as an SL Benfica player, and fifth in total, as Portugal lost 3-0 to England in a friendly at Wembley. Paul Ince and Michael Owen both featured. Meanwhile, future red Nicolas Anelka made his senior international debut in France’s goalless draw in Sweden and future red Vladimír Šmicer netted as the Czech Republic won 3-1 in Slovenia. A record for Jameo 2007 - Ex-red David James broke the all-time Premiership clean sheets record with his 143rd shut-out as Portsmouth held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in the Midlands. R.I.P. and justice for the 97, with the truth finally revealed to the wider world for those that care to look. Happy birthdays 1947 – Former Chairman Martin Broughton was born in London. He was appointed in April 2010 to locate a buyer for the club from George Gillett and Tom Hicks, which he succeeded in finding in New England Sports Ventures in October 2010, following a series of legal battles. He left his role in the following month and was knighted for his services to business in December 2010. 1982 – Albert Riera was born in Manacor in Mallorca. He signed from R.C.D. Espanyol for an initial £5.5m on transfer deadline day in September 2008, notching five times in 56 reds games before moving to Olympiacos for an initial £3.3m fee in July 2010. Harry’s treble 1922 - We beat Cardiff City 5-1 at Anfield, our first ever meeting with the Bluebirds. In comes Phil 1964 - Phil Chisnall signed from Manchester United for £25,000, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. A McEnglish debut 1893 - Keeper Billy McOwen made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Southport Central in our final ever Lancashire League fixture, with forward John Miller scoring his 25th and last goal in his 24th and final outing for the club. McOwen was the only Englishman to feature regularly in our ‘team of the Macs’, making 27 appearances in total. Midfielder Philip Kelly was playing his third and last reds game, with outside-right Tom Wyllie appearing for the 25th and last time. The ‘Anfield Iron’ signed on as a professional on his seventeenth birthday, and went on to win four League titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time with Liverpool, netting 48 times in 638 games. He died in April 2019. 1991 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne was born in Stockwell, south London. He signed from Southampton for £12.5m in July 2015, notching twice in 103 reds games before being released in June 2020. 1976 - Fernando Morientes was born in Cilleros in Spain. He struck twelve times in 61 reds appearances following his £6.3m arrival from Real Madrid in January 2005, but moved on to Valencia in July 2006 after failing to fully convince in a reds shirt. Happy birthday Spud 1977 - Danny Murphy was born in Chester. He arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee in July 1997. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made a total of 249 first-team appearances, notching 44 times, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. Two-ton Rushie 1987 - Ian Rush bagged his 200th and 201st reds goals as we beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1, with ex-red Sammy Lee in the visitors’ side. 1967 – We lost 1-0 at Burnley with Les Latcham bagging a fortuitous late winner as Tommy Smith reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Skipper once again 2010 – Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the 300th time as we beat Lille OSC Métropole 3-0 in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield, so overcoming a 1-0 first leg deficit. Gerrard opened the scoring from the spot after Lucas was brought down inside the first ten minutes. Fernando Torres bagged a second-half brace to secure victory. On the way to Wembley 1989 - We beat Third Division Brentford 4-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, thanks to a diving header from Steve McMahon, John Barnes strike and a late brace from Peter Beardsley as we headed towards Wembley yet again. 1899 - Unfortunately, we failed to reach our first ever FA Cup Final, holding Sheffield United to a 2-2 draw in the Semi-final at the City Ground, with George Allan and Hugh Morgan on the scoresheet. We eventually lost a second replay following a further draw. A disappointing League Cup first 1978 - We played our first ever League Cup Final, dominating the match but being held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest at Wembley, after extra time, before losing the replay four days later. Terry McDermott had a goal ruled out for offside with the referee also turning down a good penalty shout after Kenny Dalglish was felled in the area. Keeping milestones 2007 - Pepe Reina kept his fiftieth clean sheet as we held Aston Villa to a goalless draw at Villa Park, in what was his 93rd reds game. 1911 – Sam Hardy played his 200th reds game in our 2-1 top-flight defeat at Preston North End. Inside-left Ronald Orr struck our goal, with Ernest Bannister bagging a brace for the home side. Short-term long contracts 2009 - Rafael Benítez signed a new contract with the reds to tie him to Anfield until 2014. However, he left the club “by mutual consent” in June 2010 after 194 wins in his 350 games in charge. 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson signed a new four-year contract with West Ham United, although he moved to Chelsea for £6m just four months later. Other birthdays 1889 - Scottish left-back Bob Pursell was born in Campbeltown. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. 1942 - Forward Reginald Blore was born in Wrexham. He only made one senior appearance for the reds, aged just seventeen, and later had much greater success at Oldham Athletic, for whom he made over 200 League appearances in midfield. He also won the Professional Footballers’ Golf Championship in 1968! 1952 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was born in Witney. He played as a striker for Swindon Town and Luton Town before moving into coaching, joining the reds in February 2006. Heading towards Wembley 2012 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 in the FA Cup Sixth Round at Anfield. Luis Suárez scored before ex-red Peter Crouch headed in a leveller, one of his four goals past us. Stewart Downing scored the winner after the break. Unhappy millennium 1922 - We lost 2-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight encounter that was our thousandth first-class fixture, with William Cunningham playing his third and final reds game as keeper Elisha Scott reached a century of reds outings. Joe Smith netted one of his twelve goals past us with David Jack nabbing one of his nine in a match that also counted for Section 2 of the Lancashire Senior Cup. Signing on 1895 – England international inside-forward Frank Becton signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200, notching 42 times in 86 games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1983 – Forward David West signed from Dorchester Town for £15,000. He made it to the first-team bench on two occasions without ever making a senior appearance. He moved on to Torquay United in September 1985. Getting rammed 2001 - Robbie Fowler played his 300th reds game in our 1-1 home League draw with Derby County, as Michael Owen equalised Deon Burton’s opener for the Rams. 2000 - We won 2-0 at Pride Park, with Owen and Titi Camara getting our goals. Sam’s treble 1905 - Sam Raybould scored a hat-trick in our 6-1 Second Division defeat of Gainsborough Trinity at Anfield. Jack Parkinson added a brace, with Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet. European memories 1981 - We won 1-0 at CSKA Sofia in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie, with David Johnson on target after Sammy Lee had hit the post to send us through 6-1 on aggregate. Ray Clemence saved a penalty from Plamen Markov with ten minutes to go after a Jimmy Case foul. The night was one of mixed fortunes for our scorer, as Johnson pulled a hamstring, and had to be replaced by Steve Heighway before half time. 1992 - Less happily, we crashed out of the UEFA Cup at the Fourth Round stage, losing 2-1 to Genoa at Anfield to bow out 4-1 overall. Ronnie at the wrong end 1990 - Ronnie Whelan scored a late own goal at Old Trafford, although we still beat Manchester United 2-1 on the way to our most recent League title. John Barnes bagged both our goals, with one coming from the spot, his fiftieth reds goal. 1916 - We also took a trip down the East Lancs. Road with our Wartime League fixture ending goalless. Thumping the Geordies 1972 - We trounced Newcastle United 5-0 at Anfield with Chris Lawler, Kevin Keegan, John Toshack, Emlyn Hughes and Steve Heighway all netting. Tom’s last 1893 – We defeated South Shore 4-1 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield with John Miller on target twice. Malcolm McVean also scored with outside-right Tom Wyllie bagging his fifteenth and last goal for the club. To Elland back 1933 - Leeds United recorded their best ever win over the reds, thumping us 5-0 at Elland Road, to complete a League double. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net, with Jack Mahon bagging the first two of his four goals against the reds, Arthur Hydes scoring the first of his four past us and Harry Duggan bagging one of his five. 1936 - We beat the Yorkshire side 2-1 at Anfield, with Fred Howe and Phil Taylor on target. Arthur Riley saved a penalty from the visitors’ Jack Milburn, with George Brown netting the last of his nine strikes against us. Representative honours 1895 – Forward Gerald Dewhurst won his only England cap as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships at Queen’s Club in London. He was a Liverpool Ramblers player at the time and had played one reds game as a guest from Corinthians in March 1894. 1964 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt played for the Football League as they drew 2-2 with a Scottish League side at Roker Park. Other reds games 1961 – We were beaten 2-0 in a Second Division trip to Swansea Town. 1950 – Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2-0 at Anfield with Jim Hanc***s scoring in the first half. Roy Swinbourne struck the first of his five goals past us after the break. 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Arsenal with Alf Kirchen grabbing the last of his four goals against the reds and Ted Drake netting the final one of his six. 1914 – We beat Chelsea 3-0 in L4. Billy Banks bagged a brace with Tom Miller also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. Loan moves 2000 - Former reserves forward Sean Friars joined Portadown on loan from Ipswich Town. He returned to Portman Road two months later, where he continued to fail to break through. 2005 - Former second-string defender Andrew Nicholas joined Chester City on loan from Swindon Town. He played five League Two games in his spell with the Blues. Supersub’s night 1977 - One of Anfield’s greatest ever nights took place as ‘les verts’ of Saint-Étienne arrived with a 1-0 first-leg lead in the European Cup Quarter-final. We eventually won 3-1 on the night, with David Fairclough grabbing the crucial third after Kevin Keegan’s early speculative long-distance strike from a corner had been cancelled out by Dominique Bathenay’s second-half thirty-yard thunderbolt. Ray Kennedy gave us the lead on the night, but we still trailed on aggregate before Supersub’s late winner. 1983 - We beat Widzew Lódz 3-2 in L4 at the same stage, with Ian Rush and David Hodgson adding to a Phil Neal penalty. Unfortunately, we went out 4-3 on aggregate. Thumping the Mancs 2014 - We ran out easy 3-0 winners against David Moyes’ side at Old Trafford, with Steven Gerrard converting penalties either side of half time before hitting the post with a third. Nemanja Vidić was sent off for Manchester United, his fourth dismissal against the reds. Luis Suárez added a late third goal. Debutants galore 1970 - Roy Evans made his first reds appearance, nearly five years into his Anfield career. Roy told the Liverpool Echo, “When I told my mum I was in the team, she was so surprised she couldn’t eat her tea.” Chris Lawler, Ron Yeats and Bobby Graham netted as we beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-0, with future red Jack Whitham stretchered off while playing for Wednesday. 1968 - Left-back Peter ‘Max’ Wall made his debut in our 3-2 home League win over Burnley, the first of only 42 appearances for the reds. Tony Hateley bagged a brace, with Geoff Strong also on the scoresheet as Ralph Coates struck two of his four goals against the reds. 1925 - Fred Baron debuted in our 1-0 top-flight win at Sheffield United, when Danny Shone nabbed our goal as forward Dick Forshaw played his 200th League game for the reds and winger Cyril Gilhespy turned out for the nineteenth and last time. 1946 - We also faced the Blades in a Wartime League match at Anfield, going down 3-0. Recent matches 2002 - Vladimír Šmicer made his hundredth reds appearance in our 2-1 win at Middlesbrough that briefly sent us back to the top of the table, thanks to goals from Emile Heskey and John Arne Riise. 2003 - Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard all netted at Tottenham Hotspur as we came from behind to win 3-2. Spurs take their time 1912 - Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1 at Anfield when Billy Lacey netted our consolation, the first of his 29 reds strikes. Ernie Newman and Tom Mason struck for the visitors. 1985 - That was the last time they won at Anfield in the League until they repeated the feat thanks to Garth Crooks scoring the only goal of the game, one of his four past us. 1971 - We also played Spurs, winning a Sixth Round FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane on our way to Wembley, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Two ton Stevie 1974 – Steve Heighway played his 200th reds game, scoring the only goal of our League meeting with Leeds United at Anfield. Setting an unbeaten record 1988 - Craig Johnston scored in our 1-1 draw at Derby County, a game postponed from two months earlier. This was our 31st consecutive undefeated League match, then a League record. However, we lost our next League match, 1-0 at Goodison. What a goal! 1984 - Danny Wallace struck a brace that included a spectacular overhead kick as we lost 2-0 at Southampton. It was later named ‘Goal of the Season’ by the BBC’s Match Of The Day. Triple centurions 1996 – Robbie Fowler played his hundredth League game, netting as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield with Mark Wright also on target as Roy Evans reached a century of League games in charge and Michael Thomas played his hundredth game for the club. Births and death 1922 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was born in Prescot. He signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, scoring twice in 24 reds games before moving on to Accrington Stanley in January 1951. 1964 – Jörg Schmadtke was born in Düsseldorf. He was appointed Sporting Director in May 2023, after having held similar roles in Germany. 2006 – Defender George Whitworth died. He signed from Stanton Ironworks in February 1950, but only made nine appearances in his three years at Anfield, standing in for Phil Taylor. A fair old thumping 1893 - We trounced Fairfield 5-0 in a Lancashire League meeting, with John Miller netting twice and Hugh McQueen and Tom Wyllie also on the scoresheet, as we also benefited from an own goal. Gunners again 1963 - We won an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-1 at Highbury thanks to a Jimmy Melia strike and a penalty from Ronnie Moran, which came a week after our previous game, a 2-2 top-flight draw at the same venue. We made it as far as the Semi-final that year, before losing out to Leicester City. 2022 – We won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, with Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino both on target after the break. He notched seven times while at Anfield. 1961 – Scottish inside-forward Jimmy Harrower was sold to Newcastle United. He had signed from Hibernian for £11,000 in January 1958 and bagged 22 goals in 105 reds games. 2007 - Two reserves moved on loan to Championship sides. Lee Peltier joined Hull City, while Besian Idrizaj signed on for Luton Town. They both turned out seven times for their temporary employers before returning to Anfield. On the same day, it was announced that Gary Mackay-Steven had agreed to join from Ross County in the summer. Charnock signs on 1992 - Midfielder Phil Charnock signed on as a professional. He only made two senior appearances, including his debut against Apollon Limassol in September 1992 when he became our youngest ever European player. 1993 – He signed a new contract with the reds. Billy misses out 1954 – We played in a testimonial match for Carlisle United favourite Billy Hogan at their Brunton Park ground. The game ended 3-3, with our goals coming from Jimmy Melia, Phil Taylor and a William Pringle penalty. Unfortunately, Hogan could not play in the game as he missed his train and was stranded at home! Other reds games 1991 – We beat Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield despite falling behind. Ian Rush levelled the scores before Gary Owers deflected a Peter Beardsley shot into his own net. 1957 – We won a Second Division fixture 2-1 at Port Vale as Tony Rowley scored two headers. 1935 – We lost 5-3 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Billy Wrigglesworth struck twice with Bob Iverson also scoring and Gordon Hodgson converting a penalty as we went in 3-1 down at the break. Iverson and future red Billy Hartill struck for the home side in the second half, as did Alf Hanson and Vic Wright for the reds. 1929 – Birmingham City held us to a goalless draw at St. Andrews. 1907 – We lost 3-1 at Preston North End with Jack Cox bagging our late consolation. 1901 – Andy McGuigan and John ‘Sailor’ Hunter struck as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park. Beaten by the rest 1932 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tosh Johnson featured as England lost 4-1 to The Rest in a trial match in Huddersfield. Also on the move 1989 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined basement side Darlington from Carlisle United for £10,000. He had played 36 times for the Cumbrians. 2005 - Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Shrewsbury Town from Macclesfield Town on a free transfer, netting twice in seven outings for his final League club as a player. For Britain 1908 – George Latham and Maurice Parry both played for Wales as they were thrashed 7-1 by England in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1914 – Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the England goal as they beat Wales 2-0 in the same competition in Cardiff. -
A Norwegian nightmare 1974 - We secured our record victory, thumping Norwegians Strømsgodset 11-0 at Anfield in our opening game of that season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Midfielder Brian Hall was the only outfield player not to score, with Phil’s Boersma and Thompson grabbing a brace apiece. For the record, our other goals that day came from an Alec Lindsay penalty, Steve Heighway, Peter Cormack, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Kennedy. Debuting at the back 1988 - Steve Staunton made his reds bow in a 1-1 home draw with Tottenham Hotspur, when Peter Beardsley nabbed our goal with Terry Fenwick equalising a minute later, one of his four strikes against the reds. 1994 - New record signing Phil Babb made his first appearance, as we lost 2-0 at Manchester United. Two-ton Bob 2019 – Forward Roberto Firmino played his 200th reds game as we eventually lost our UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at SSC Napoli, so losing our first game as holders from the previous season. Dries Mertens' penalty and a late Fernando Llorente goal condemned us to defeat with the match still goalless with ten minutes remaining. To and from Upton Park 1993 - We undertook a complex transfer deal with West Ham United. Julian Dicks arrived at Anfield, with David Burrows, Mike Marsh and £1.5m heading in the opposite direction. None of them lasted much beyond a year at their new club. Signing on 2007 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala signed from Sevilla for £160,000. He made five senior appearances, sitting on the bench on a further eleven occasions before moving to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011. 1992 – Defender Torben Piechnik signed from F.C. København for £500,000. He only played 24 times, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield. 1924 – Defender Bert Shears signed from Aberdare Athletic. He played sixteen reds games without notching, moving to Tranmere Rovers in May 1930. Reds dismissed 2002 - Dietmar Hamann was sent off in our 2-0 UEFA Champions League defeat at Rafael Benítez’s Valencia, with Salif Diao given the run-around at centre-back. Pablo Aimar and Rubén Baraja struck, while Jerzy Dudek said, “We didn’t close down quickly enough and we weren’t strong enough. We played like girls.” 1983 - Future red Steve McMahon was dismissed as Aston Villa lost 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to second-half goals from Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush as we extended our unbeaten run to the first six League games of that season. Red birthdays 1864 - Right-back Andrew Hannah was born in Renton, joining the reds from his hometown club in May 1892. He was the first ever captain of the club, and cousin of inside-left Davy Hannah who also turned out for the reds in the 1890’s. Andrew made 69 reds appearances, netting once as he led us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in his first two seasons at Anfield. 2003 – Midfielder Luca Stephenson was born in Sunderland. He signed pro terms in September 2020. First win at The Dell 1966 - We finally won at The Dell, at our seventh attempt, as Ian’s St. John and Callaghan scored in our 2-1 victory as Ron Yeats played his 200th League game for the reds. 1985 - We also faced the Saints, when Jan Mølby and Kenny Dalglish struck as we won our Screen Sport Super Cup match 2-1 at Anfield, with Danny Wallace on target for the visitors. Mixed fortunes in Europe We have played two other European ties on this day, without securing a win, although the seasons were both successful in the end. 1975 - We lost 1-0 at Hibernian in our first game of that victorious UEFA Cup campaign, with the goal scored by former Evertonian Joe Harper. Full-back Chris Lawler played his 549th and last reds game. 1980 - Terry McDermott netted our goal as we were held 1-1 at Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura. Double ton 1932 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw played his hundredth reds League game as we won 1-0 at Middlesbrough thanks to a Gordon Gunson strike, with inside-left Archie McPherson reaching a century of games for clubs in all competitions. Youngsters on the world stage 2001 - Fernando Torres played for Spain Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. Unfortunately, they also lost their third group game to crash out at this stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in the same tournament as they beat Oman 3-0 as they went on to top the same group. Digger in charge 2008 – John Barnes was named as Manager of Jamaica. He took over that November, moving on in June 2009 to take charge of Tranmere Rovers. Other reds games 2000 – Steven Gerrard netted as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Paolo Di Canio scooring for the home side. 1955 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-1 at Leicester City, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. 1949 – We won 3-2 at Birmingham City. An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour mark. Billy Bonds made his 700th West Ham appearance in this game, as we closed the gap on the second-placed Hammers to two points. Patrik Berger rounded off a fantastic team move for the other goal. 1932 - Gordon Hodgson scored a twenty-minute second-half hat-trick as we beat Portsmouth 4-3 in a top-flight match at Anfield, after Dave Wright had opened the scoring. Jimmy Easson struck one of his eight goals past us, with Jack Smith and James Nichol also on target. 1960 - We also hosted Pompey in a Second Division fixture, when Dave Hickson bagged a brace in a 3-3 draw, with Roger Hunt also on target as we came from 1-0 and 3-1 down. Cup first-timers 1892 - We played our first ever FA Cup match, winning 4-0 at Nantwich in the First Qualifying Round, with John Miller netting a hat-trick. Dirk’s bow 1913 – South African keeper Dirk Kemp was born in Cape Town. He signed from Transvaal in December 1936 but played just thirty senior and ten Wartime games for the reds. New skipper 2003 - It was announced that Steven Gerrard had replaced Sami Hyypiä as club captain, prior to our game at home to Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana. Florent Sinama-Pongolle made his reds bow as we reached the Second Round of the UEFA Cup 4-1 on aggregate, in our 150th game in this competition. Anthony Le Tallec scored his only reds goal, with Emile Heskey grabbing his fiftieth, and Harry Kewell also netting in our 3-0 win, with El-Hadji Diouf missing a late penalty. We took the lead through Steven Gerrard before falling 3-1 behind with Djibril Cissé having a penalty saved with the score at 2-1. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record, while his second was his ninth and last for the club. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. Scott Carson made his ninth and final reds appearance in this game. 1939 - We also faced the Hatters at the same stage of the Cup with left-winger George Paterson grabbing his only reds goal in a 3-0 Anfield victory. Jack Balmer added two strikes. At last at the Bridge 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou’s first League goal handed us our first win at Stamford Bridge for fifteen years, as we beat Chelsea 1-0 despite the absence of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. El-Hadji Diouf was unjustly sent off, with his red card later rescinded, and Jerzy Dudek went off injured to be replaced by debutant Patrice Luzi for the last quarter of an hour, becoming the 52nd senior keeper in our history, and only the fourth man to never concede a goal in his entire reds career between the sticks, although this was his only senior outing. 1978 - We lost at Stamford Bridge, being knocked out of the FA Cup at the Third Round stage, with Joey Jones playing his hundredth and last game against his future employers. David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish bagged our goals as we lost 4-2. Steve Finnieston netted one of his four strikes past us, with Clive Walker bagging a brace and Tommy Langley also on target. Death of a legend 1968 - Ephraim Longworth died in Liverpool. He signed from Leyton in June 1910, playing at right-back for us until 1928, making a total of 370 reds appearances in seventeen years without ever finding the net. He also became the first red to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Beginnings and ends 2023 – Dutch forward Cody Gakpo debuted as we were held to a 2-2 draw in an FA Cup Third Round encounter in L4. Gonçalo Guedes put the visitors ahead with Darwin Núñez equalising on the stroke of half time. Mohamed Salah put us in front before Hwang Hee-chan levelled, with Wolves denied a late winner due to a controversial offside call. 2019 – Winger Rafael Camacho and midfielder Curtis Jones both made their reds bows, with centre-half Ki-Jana Hoever coming off the bench after just six minutes for his debut to become our youngest ever player in the FA Cup as we lost a Third Round tie 2-1 at Molineux. Keeper Simon Mignolet and left-back Alberto Moreno both played their final reds games. Mexican forward Raúl Jiménez gave the home side the lead with Divock Origi equalising after the break. However, Rúben Neves struck the winner shortly afterwards, with Xherdan Shaqiri later hitting the woodwork. Happy birthdays 1989 - Left-back Emiliano Insúa was born in Buenos Aires. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He initially arrived on loan from Boca Juniors in January 2007 before signing permanently for £1.675m seven months later. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, joining Sporting Clube de Portugal permanently a year later. 1906 – Forward Harry Race was born in Evenwood, County Durham. He signed from Raby United in February 1928, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000. 1931 - Centre-half Alex South was born. He struck once in just seven appearances after signing from his hometown club Brighton & Hove Albion for £5,000 in December 1954, before moving on to Halifax Town in October 1956, for whom he racked up over three hundred games. Management moves 2000 - Steve McMahon was appointed Blackpool Manager, with Gary Ablett arriving at the club on non-contract terms on the same day. He remained in charge of the Seasiders until June 2004, leading them to promotion via the play-offs in his first full season. Ablett only made twelve appearances for Blackpool before retiring. 2012 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton was named as Melbourne Victory boss. He stayed for just three months, winning only two of his twelve games in charge. 2013 - Dean Saunders became Manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he could not prevent them from being relegated to League One and was sacked after just four months in the job. Sadio the best 2020 - Sadio Mané was named CAF African Footballer of the Year, having been runner-up to Mohamed Salah for the previous two years. Knocking the Sky Blues out We have twice faced Coventry City in the Third Round of the FA Cup on this day in history. 1961 – Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower struck his 22nd and final reds goal with Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also netting as we won 3-2 at Anfield, although we went out at home to Sunderland at the next hurdle. 1970 - Bobby Graham struck our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Highfield Road, although we won the replay 3-0 and got as far as the Sixth Round that season. Wearside stalemates We have twice drawn with Sunderland on this day in history. 1899 – We were held to a goalless top-flight draw at Anfield with keeper Harry Storer playing his hundredth reds game. 1922 - We drew an FA Cup First Round tie 1-1 at Roker Park, with Dick Forshaw on target for the reds. We won the Anfield replay 5-0 but went out at the next stage, beaten at home by West Bromwich Albion. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. He died in March 2017. 1957 - Centre-half John Nicholson signed as a professional, but he could only make one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 League games for them. On the move 1955 – Inside-right Sammy Smyth left the reds to sign for Bangor back in his native Northern Ireland. He had signed from Stoke City for £12,000 in December 1952, netting twenty goals in 44 games. 1987 - Ex-red Michael Robinson joined Club Atlético Osasuna from Queens Park Rangers. He struck twelve times in 59 La Liga games before becoming a well-respected pundit in Spain. 2015 - Steven Gerrard announced that he would sign for LA Galaxy when his contract expired at the end of the season. On the same day, First-team doctor Zaf Iqbal left the club to return to London due to family illness while future reds forward Takumi Minamino joined Red Bull Salzburg from Cerezo Osaka after fifteen goals in 82 games for the J1 League side. 2016 - Joe Cole joined Coventry City from Aston Villa on a free transfer after a successful loan spell, netting twice in 22 outings in total. International reds 1945 – Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell played for a Scottish Services XI as they lost 6-4 to Flanders in Brugge. 1992 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his first cap as a Rosenborg BK player, and fourteenth in total, as Norway played out a goalless friendly draw with Egypt in Cairo. 2002 – Ex-red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they won a friendly 3-1 in Burkina Faso. 2004 – Roy Hodgson managed the United Arab Emirates as they lost 3-1 to Bahrain in a Gulf Cup of Nations game in Kuwait. 2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva appeared for Brazil Under-20’s in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventudjde América” as they beat Chile 4-2 in a group game in Paraguay. 2010 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast beat Rwanda 2-0 in a friendly in Tanzania. Treble from out wide 1898 - Scottish outside-left Tommy Robertson scored a hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in a First Division fixture. He bagged a total of 34 goals in 141 reds games. Fastest ever Toffee 1949 - Peter Farrell scored Everton’s fastest ever derby goal, after twelve seconds at the Kop end. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He went on to score 24 times in 133 games for the Toffees before moving across Stanley Park. He joined the reds on loan in January 2011, playing and training with the reserves, as well as training with the first team, but returned to Coventry City after a hamstring injury.
