Farewell Jocky 1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. Triple treble This day has brought three reds hat-tricks. 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble in our very first senior game on this day, a 4-0 home League win over Manchester City, with Jack Cox adding the other. 1930 - We faced City again, losing a top-flight encounter at Maine Road 4-3

Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Skipper Ron Yeats called tails but the first attempt landed upright in the mud, although the Germans claimed it was leaning towards heads! Fortunately, it came down the right way at the second attempt so we went through. 1971 - We drew 1-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our Fairs Cup Fourth Round tie, with Ian Ross on tar

Stevie at the treble 2010 - Steven Gerrard scored a second-half hat-trick as we came from behind to beat SSC Napoli 3-1 in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, only the second reds substitute to net a treble, which included a penalty. Ezequiel Lavezzi put the visitors ahead, who included ex-red Andrea Dossena in their ranks. Five thousand goals 1990 - Ian Rush’s second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was our 5,000th goal in top-flight League football. Peter Beardsley also netted for the reds, having come on in place of John Barnes early in the first half. Bruce Grobb
