The glory of Istanbul 2005 - We claimed the European Cup for the fifth time as we came from 3-0 down against the mighty AC Milan in Istanbul to triumph after a penalty shoot-out. Paolo Maldini scored before Hernan Crespo bagged a brace, with the reds having a strong penalty claim for handball turned down as well as losing Harry Kewell to injury half-way through the first period. The fans and team inspired each other in the second half as we began our comeback through skipper Steven Gerrard, whose goal was the only header of that season’s victorious European campaign. Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Off to Istanbul 2005 - We headed towards our sixth European Cup Final after seeing Chelsea off in the Semi-final. Luis García converted the only goal of the tie four minutes into the second leg, with the referee clearly indicating that the ball had indeed crossed the line, despite Chelsea protests. The Anfield atmosphere remained white hot, with many supporters considering this to be the famous old ground’s greatest ever night as the reds held out for victory. Hearts were in mouths when six minutes of injury time were conjured up, especially when Eidur Gudjohnsen shot past the post deep into
  6.
