He joined the Anfield coaching staff in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager to Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later.     The glory of Istanbul 2005 - We claimed the European Cup for the fifth time as we came from 3-0 down against the mighty AC Milan in Istanbul to triumph after a penalty shoot-out.     A Real thumping 2009 - We thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield to reach the Quarter-finals of the Champions League 5-0 on aggregate.     Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting.     Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey.     Happy birthday Ronnie 1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation.     Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss.     Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month.     Xabi from his own half 2006 - Jan Kromkamp made his reds bow in a thrilling FA Cup Third Round tie at Luton Town. We took the lead through Steven Gerrard before falling 3-1 behind with Djibril Cissé having a penalty saved with the score at 2-1. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. He struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War.
