Yanks in 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks now owned 98.6% of the club’s shares and intended to compulsorily acquire the remaining shares. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The incredibly high level of acceptance of the offer shows shareholders have faith in the vision outlined for the club by George Gillett and Tom Hicks.” The two Americans remained in control until October 2010. We’re all on our way to Wembley 1965 - We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Villa Park Semi-final en route to our first ever FA Cup triumph. John Mortimore had a goal disallowed for the

Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

Stevie off but derby joy 2006 - Steven Gerrard was sent off at home to Everton for two quick-fire yellow cards before Phil Neville put us ahead at the end of the first half with a superb headed own goal from a corner. Luis García put us 2-0 up with a beautiful lob soon after the restart, our 500th home Premiership goal. Tim Cahill headed the visitors back into the game with one of his five goals against us, also their hundredth League goal in an Anfield derby. Substitute Andy van der Meyde was sent off for elbowing Xabi Alonso just five minutes after coming on before Harry Kewell rounded off

Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. He had been officially appointed eighteen days earlier. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark ne

Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as i

In that time, he had struck a then-record 286 times in 492 reds games, helping us to two League titles, the Second Division championship, our first FA Cup win in 1965 and an FA Charity Shield. He remains our record League goalscorer, with 245 strikes. He is also revered among older Wanderers’ fans after 25 goals in 84 games. From villain to hero 1991 - Michael Thomas signed from Arsenal for £1.5m. He spent nearly seven years at Anfield, playing 163 reds games, and scoring t

Records in the League Cup 1994 - Ian Rush scored his sixteenth and final reds hat-trick in his 600th reds game as we won 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers in a Fourth Round tie. Chris Sutton’s late consolation was one of his seven strikes against the reds. On the same day, future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain. 1988 - John Durnin made his third and final reds appearance, as a substitute, as we lost 4-1 at West Ham United at the same stage of the competition, our worst ever League Cup defeat. Future red Paul Ince opened the scoring with a spectacular volle

Ged takes charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a reds game for the first time as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the first two of his seven strikes past us. Debutants galore 1970 - John Toshack made his reds bow as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City, with ex-red Geoff Strong being given a rapturous reception as he led his new side out. 1925 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jacks

Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. Double reds debutants 1974 - Reds legends Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both made their reds debuts as we held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park. Four for Jack 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged all four goals in our 4-1 win at Derby County. This was the second of his three hat-tricks in consecutive games. His third goal was his fiftieth reds strike, while Raich Carter’s late consolation was the last of his six strikes against the reds. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

God’s first great work 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored his first League hat-trick as we beat Southampton 4-2 at Anfield, with strike partner Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Ronnie Rosenthal made his 97th and final reds appearance in this game, as a half-time substitute for Stig Inge Bjørnebye. Matt Le Tissier netted two of his seven strikes against the reds in this game. Happy birthdays 1985 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan was born in Viljandi. He signed from Augsburg for £4.2m in July 2016, notching twice in 53 outings before moving to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. 1929 - C

Titi’s tears 1999 - Titi Camara scored the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United, and then broke down in tears as he celebrated. He later revealed that his father had died earlier that day, “That goal was for my dad. It contributed to an extremely emotional day in my life. I did not want to let my team-mates down, which is why I insisted on playing. With Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler both injured, they needed me.” On the same day, Michael Foley played for the Irish Under-16’s as they beat Switzerland 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin. Happy birthday Phil

Trebles for 1984 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick in torrential rain as we beat SL Benfica 3-1 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round encounter. 1998 - Michael Owen scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Anfield. Steve McManaman grabbed the other, with Dougie Freedman on target for the visitors. An Olympic champion 1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that won Olympic gold by beating Denmark 2-0 in the Final at White City Stadium. Igor Bišcan wrapped it up 2004 - We won a game of two halves at Craven Cottage. The reds were dismal in a first half that saw a Luis Boa Morte brace put Fulham 2-0 up. We drew level after the break thanks to a Zat Knight own goal and a close-range Milan Baroš strike, before Josemi was sent off following a second caution. Xabi Alonso, who had replaced the hapless Salif Diao at half time, then bagged his first reds goal, with the 4-2 win completed by Igor Bišcan’s glorious strike, his first League goal. All together now, “2-0 down, 4-2 up, Igor Bišcan wrapped it up.” First win in the Ukra

Happy birthday Brucie 1957 - Bruce Grobbelaar was born in Durban, South Africa. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime, and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals af

Five for young Robbie 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored all five goals as we thumped Fulham in a League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, having already scored on his club debut in the first leg. Only four other reds have scored five times in the same game. A premier millennium 2008 – We went in 2-0 down at half time at Manchester City. A Stephen Ireland volley was City’s hundredth home League goal against the reds, while a Javier Garrido free-kick four minutes before the break ensured City reached 200 goals against us in all competitions. Fernando Torres netted our thousandth goal in the Pr
