Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an e

Happy birthday Ronnie 1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. He died in March 2017. 1980 – Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen was born in Asnæs. He was signed b

We won it eight times 2012 – We secured the League Cup for a record eighth time, eventually defeating Cardiff City 3-2 at Wembley on penalties. Joe Mason scored for the Welsh side after Glen Johnson had struck the crossbar, with Martin Škrtel equalising after an hour. Substitute Dirk Kuyt put us ahead in extra time, before clearing off the line. However, Ben Turner then bagged a very late leveller. Steven Gerrard and Charlie Adam both failed to convert from twelve yards, but Kuyt, man-of-the-match Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson all converted before Steven’s cousin Anthony Gerrard missed th

The start of another treble 2001 - We won the Worthington Cup in the first domestic final to be played outside England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. We beat Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 to secure Gérard Houllier's first trophy. Who could forget witnessing Jamie Carragher striding forward to bury our fifth spot-kick, before Sander Westerveld saved the decisive penalty from future Blue Andrew Johnson? Robbie Fowler had opened the scoring, before a late Darren Purse penalty took the game into extra time. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for

A reds stalwart passes on 2004 - Geoff Twentyman died in a Southport hospital after a long illness. He played 184 times at left-half after signing from Carlisle United for £10,000 in December 1953, bagging nineteen goals. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a position he held for nineteen years. We always win in Rome 2001 - Michael Owen scored twice at the Stadio Olimpico to give us a 2-0 victory over Roma in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round – cue several songs! His second was our 200th goal since Gérard Houllier took sole control. Into the final 1983 - Despite losing 1-0 on the night at Burnley, we still progressed to our third straight League Cup Final, 3-1 on aggregate. This is one of six defeats we have suffered in our fourteen matches on this day in history. 1995 - We were heading to the League Cup Final after beating Crystal Palace thanks to a last-minute Robbie Fowler goal

Luis off the mark 2011 - Luis Suárez netted on his reds debut as a substitute to round off a 2-0 victory over Stoke City at Anfield. Raul Meireles had opened the scoring immediately after the break. Hodgson’s seventeenth 1935 - Gordon Hodgson scored his seventeenth and final reds hat-trick in a 4-2 League win at Leeds United, with Alf Hanson also netting. This remains a club record. Red trebles 1964 - Ian St. John scored three in a 6-1 First Division win over Sheffield United at Anfield. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1913 - Arthur Metcalf bagged a treble in our first ever FA Cup meeting with the Gunners, then known as Woolwich Arsenal. We won 4-1 at the Manor Ground to reach the Third Round, with Billy Lacey also on target. Unfortunately, we went out to Newcastle United at the next hurdle. 1975 - We also faced Arsenal, losing a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Highbury as Alan Ball netted two of his eleven goals against the reds.

Yossi at the treble 2008 - Yossi Benayoun scored a hat-trick as we twice came from behind to beat non-League Havant & Waterlooville 5-2 in the FA Cup Fourth Round at Anfield. We first went behind through Richard Pacquette, before Lucas Leiva became the first Brazilian to score for the club. New bosses 1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974. 2010 - Tom Werner took over

Beating the Geordies 2007 - Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel were all on target as we won 3-0 at Newcastle United, with the visiting fans taunting troubled Toon boss Sam Allardyce, whose days were numbered at the club. Fernando Torres missed a host of golden chances, with boss Rafael Benítez further riling the club’s American owners by choosing to wear a track-suit, following on from his repeated statements in a pre-match press conference that “as always I am focused on training and coaching my team”. On the same day, future reds striker Milan Jovanović played for Serbia in a 1-0 Eur

Farewell Crazy Horse 2004 - Red legend Emlyn Hughes died aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Legends farewells 19

Anfield trebles 1956 - Half-back Johnny Wheeler scored a quick-fire hat-trick to hand us a 4-1 Second Division win over Port Vale, with his goals coming between the 81st and 85th minutes. Billy Liddell scored our other goal. 1945 - Forward Willie Fagan bagged all the goals in our 3-0 Wartime League defeat of Newcastle United. 1951 - We also faced the Geordies, with Jimmy Payne netting in our 1-1 top-flight draw at St. James’ Park. Willie’s debut 1962 - Half-back Willie Stevenson made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at home to Burnley. Ian St. John netted our consolation. Andy Lochhead

Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top fl

Sir Roger’s treble 1961 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick in our 6-1 defeat of Walsall at Anfield, already his second treble of the season as we went on to claim the Second Division title. Kevin Lewis, Jimmy Melia and Ian St. John netted the others, with Ron Yeats putting through his own net. Hurry up Harry 1893 - Forward Harry Bradshaw signed from Northwich Victoria. He struck 51 times in 138 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title on two occasions, and winning an England cap in his five years at Anfield, so becoming the first ever international red. He played 468 times across the defence and midfield, scoring 46 times and helping us to four League titles, European Cup, three FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield, as well as being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run.

In comes Razor 1987 - Ray Houghton signed from Oxford United for £825,000. He went on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield in his five years at Anfield. He was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992, as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. Five for young Robbie 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored all five goals as we thumped Fulham in a League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, having already scored on his club debut in the first leg. Only four other reds have scored five times in the same game. A premier millennium 2008 – We went in 2-0 down at half time at Manchester City. A Stephen Ireland volley was City’s hundredth home League goal against the reds, while a Javier Garrido free-kick four minutes before the break ensured City reached 200 goals against us in all competitions. A black day for the club 1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şah
