Clinching the title 1990 - We secured our eighteenth and most recent League title, beating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Anfield thanks to an Ian Rush strike and a John Barnes penalty, after Roy Wegerle had put the visitors in front. Recent reserves keeper Paul Harrison was our mascot that day! UEFA Cup glory 1976 - Jimmy Case became our first substitute to score in a cup final as we beat Club Brugge 3-2 at Anfield in the first leg of the UEFA Cup Final, despite being 2-0 down inside the first quarter of an hour thanks to strikes from Raoul Lambert and Julien Cools. Debutants galore 1975 - Jimmy Case made his reds bow in our 3-1 home League win over Queens Park Rangers, when John Toshack netted a brace to add to a Kevin Keegan penalty, with Gerry Francis on target for the visitors. This was our final game of the season, as we ended up in second place behind Derby County. 1965 - Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. John Sealey scored in his only reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target as we won 3-1. Full-backs Ala

Yanks in 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks now owned 98.6% of the club’s shares and intended to compulsorily acquire the remaining shares. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The incredibly high level of acceptance of the offer shows shareholders have faith in the vision outlined for the club by George Gillett and Tom Hicks.” The two Americans remained in control until October 2010. We’re all on our way to Wembley 1965 - We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Villa Park Semi-final en route to our first ever FA Cup triumph. John Mortimore had a goal disallowed for the

Crazy Horse trots in 1967 – Emlyn Hughes signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000, netting 49 times in 665 games. He helped us to claim two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. In comes Raheem 2010 – Winger Raheem Sterling signed from

Stevie off but derby joy 2006 - Steven Gerrard was sent off at home to Everton for two quick-fire yellow cards before Phil Neville put us ahead at the end of the first half with a superb headed own goal from a corner. Luis García put us 2-0 up with a beautiful lob soon after the restart, our 500th home Premiership goal. Tim Cahill headed the visitors back into the game with one of his five goals against us, also their hundredth League goal in an Anfield derby. Substitute Andy van der Meyde was sent off for elbowing Xabi Alonso just five minutes after coming on before Harry Kewell rounded off

Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Skipper Ron Yeats called tails but the first attempt landed upright in the mud, although the Germans claimed it was leaning towards heads! Fortunately, it came down the right way at the second attempt so we went through. 1971 - We drew 1-1 at Bayern München in the second leg of our Fairs Cup Fourth Round tie, with Ian Ross on tar

Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as i

Roy in charge 1994 - Roy Evans had his first game in charge following the departure of Graeme Souness as Manager. He did not get off to an auspicious start, as we needed an Ian Culverhouse own goal to help secure a point at Norwich City, with John Barnes bagging our late leveller as we drew 2-2. City keeper Bryan Gunn was sent off for handling outside the area in the final minute, with Chris Sutton nabbing the first two of his seven goals against us. Despite admitting that Bruce Grobbelaar had not been at fault for either goal, a certain tabloid rag later alleged that he had failed to throw

Debutants 1963 - Full-back Chris Lawler made his reds bow in a 2-2 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion, with Roger Hunt adding to a Ronnie Moran penalty. Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Yet another win 1981 - We registered our 85th consecutive home match without defeat as we beat Alliance Premier League side Altrincham 4-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and a Kenny Dalglish brace, with shipping clerk Graham Heathcote converting a penalty for the visitors in front of the Kop. Future Academy Manager John Owens and Zak Whitbread’s dad Barry were both on the losing side while reds legend Bill Shankly bizarrely travelled to the game on the Altrincham team coach and went into the visitors’ dressing room before the game, as

Michael the centurion 2001 - Michael Owen scored his hundredth reds goal after Trevor Sinclair had given West Ham United the lead, as we drew 1-1 at Upton Park. This was our 200th League goal under Gérard Houllier's sole charge. 1923 - We also faced the Hammers when Jimmy Walsh struck twice in a 2-0 win at Anfield. Red debutants 1984 - Kevin MacDonald made his reds bow as we beat Luton Town 1-0 at home, with John Wark on target. 2013 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith came off the bench to make his debut as we lost 2-1 at Chelsea with Martin Škrtel handing us an early lead. Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko mad

Team of the Year 2001 - We were named Team of the Year at the BBC’s Sports Personality Of The Year ceremony. Ian Rush presented the award to the recovering Gérard Houllier, who said, “My thoughts and my thanks go to my players. Not only this season’s players, but also the players who have left, like Christian and Robbie. I would also like to express my gratitude to David Moores, Rick Parry and the board because they have all been very supportive of what we are trying to do. I would like to thank my backroom staff because you don’t win things just like that. Above all I would like to thank th

Reds born 1946 - Brian Hall was born in Glasgow. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of P

Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery.
