An Anfield farewell 1996 - Ian Rush played his final reds game at Anfield, with Stan Collymore scoring the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough. He was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour’ from both teams. Heading to Istanbul 2005 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final. The evening was only slightly spoiled by Xabi Alonso’s unwarranted booking that would rule him out of the Anfield return. Steven Gerrard had an emergency dental operation on the morning of the game. FA Cup semi-finals We have twice played FA Cup Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1963 - We lost 1-0 to Leicester City at Hillsborough, with Mike Stringfellow heading in the winner, the first of his five goals against the reds, and Gordon Banks keeping the reds at bay. Winger Kevin Lewis made his 82nd and final reds appearance that day. 1977 - We beat Everton 3-0 at Maine Road in a replay, to keep on course for the treble. Our goals came from a Phil Neal penalty, Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy that day. Both sides also had strong penalty claims turned down. Title blow 2014 – We lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield to deal our title chances a major blow. The visitors were time-wasting from the first minute as we felt the absence of the suspended Jordan Henderson. Steven Gerrard slipped at the end of the first half to allow Demba Ba a clear run on goal, and he slipped the ball past Simon Mignolet. We failed to break down the Blues’ blanket defence, with Willian nabbing a stoppage time second, the first of his four goals past us. Iago Aspas made his fifteenth and final reds appearance, from the bench with future red Mohamed Salah and ex-red Fernando Torres both featuring for the visitors. On the same day, Luis Suárez was named PFA Player of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings. He was also included in the Team of the Year, alongside Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and future red Adam Lallana. This was Gerrard’s eighth and last appearance in this list, a record in the Premier League era. Happy birthdays 1990 - Defender Martin Kelly was born in Whiston. He made his senior bow as a sub in our Champions League win at PSV Eindhoven in December 2008, striking once in 62 reds games before joining Crystal Palace in August 2014 for a reported £2m. 1904 - Right-back Bob Done was born in Runcorn. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games following his arrival from his hometown side in April 1926. He left for Reading for £150 in May 1935. 1873 – Wing-half Charlie Wilson was born in Sutton, St Helens. He signed from Stockport County on a free transfer in December 1897, bagging three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. 1959 – Academy Director Frank McParland was born in Liverpool. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999 he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. Gérard Houllier later gave him a scouting role before Rafael Benítez made him Joint Chief Scout, moving to Bolton Wanderers as General Manager in July 2007, although he only remained there three months. He returned to Melwood in May 2009, moving up to be Director of Academy and Player Development two years later. He left the club again in November 2013. Another title disappears from view 2002 - Michael Owen made his 150th League appearance as we lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to a Gus Poyet goal. It was our first defeat in fifteen League games and made winning the title a near impossibility. This was also Jari Litmanen’s 43rd and final game in a reds shirt. Meanwhile, a Neil Mellor brace sent the Under-19’s into the Final of the National Play-offs, as we overcame Nottingham Forest 2-1, to set up a two-legged tie with Arsenal. These goals took the boy Mellor to 44 goals for the season. On the same day, future Anfield star Anthony Le Tallec was on target for Le Havre as the French outfit were promoted into the top division by beating Laval 4-1. Thumping the Geordies 2013 - Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson struck twice each, with Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini also on target as we won 6-0 at Newcastle United, with Mathieu Debuchy sent off for the home side late on. In the best team 2008 - Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and ex-red David James were all named in the PFA Team of the Year. 2003 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was voted into the PFA Team of the Year, having kept fifteen clean sheets in the League for Blackburn Rovers. Up and down 1895 - We lost a Test Match 1-0 to Bury at Ewood Park that relegated us after just one season in the top flight. Robert Neill made his reds bow in this game. He was possibly our shortest ever centre-half, standing at just five foot four inches. Also debuting were keeper John Whitehead and forward John Cleland, who played his only senior reds game while on loan from Edinburgh side St. Bernard’s, while outside-left John Drummond made his eighteenth and final appearance. Bury keeper Archie Montgomery was sent off late on for kicking out at Harry Bradshaw. This was William Barclay’s last game in charge of the side. 1896 – John McKenna managed the reds for the final time as we lost another Test Match, going down 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground. However, previous results were enough to ensure our promotion. Milestone games 1908 - We played our 500th League game, beating Bury 2-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season thanks to a Ronald Orr brace, with Billy Hibbert bagging one of his thirteen goals against the reds. We ended the season in eighth position. 1985 – Alan Hansen played his 400th reds game as we drew 0-0 at Ipswich Town. 2022 – Jordan Henderson featured in the UEFA Champions League for the fiftieth time as we beat Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of our Semi-final at Anfield, on our way to reach the Final for the tenth time. The score was level at the break, with Pervis Estupiñán deflected a Henderson cross into his own goal before Sadio Mané double our lead. Sam’s last 1912 – Forward Sam Gilligan bagged his sixteenth and final reds goal in the second minute of our 1-0 top-flight victory at Oldham Athletic. Disaster in North London 1935 - Willie Evans scored a hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur as they trounced us 5-1 at White Hart Lane. Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed our consolation while forward Sam English played his fiftieth and final reds game. George Hunt struck one of his five goals past us, with Len Bolan also on the scoresheet. Bill yet again 1903 - Left-half Bill Goldie played his 174th and final reds game, actually his 129th consecutive reds appearance, and 119th straight game in the League, as we won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in our last game of the season, thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Jack Cox. Left-back John Glover and inside-right George Livingstone both played their last reds games. For Razor 1991 - A testimonial match for Ray Kennedy was staged at Highbury. A reds team beat Arsenal 3-1, with Jan Mølby, David Speedie and Peter Beardsley on the scoresheet. A treble for Jimmy 1931 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall grabbed a hat-trick as we were beaten 8-4 by Yeovil & Petters United at their Huish Park Stadium in a friendly, with Cyril Done nabbing our other goal. First and last times with the armband 1982 - Phil Thompson skippered England for the sixth and final time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff. Joe Corrigan, ex-red Joey Jones, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Ian Rush all also featured. 1977 - Future red Kenny Dalglish captained Scotland for the first time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a friendly at Hampden Park. In and out 1936 – Keeper Stanley Kane was sold to Southend United. He had only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. 1920 – Forward Peter McKinney signed from Consett Celtic. He struck once in three reds appearances, all in 1920/21, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 1999 - Stephen Warnock signed as a professional. He played 67 reds games, notching once, before moving to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 for £1.5m, although he moved on to Aston Villa in August 2009. Twice against the Blades and Hammers We have twice ended the season by playing Sheffield United in the top flight at Anfield on this day over the years. 1907 - We drew 2-2 with forward Sam Raybould on target in his 226th and final reds game. Bill McPherson also struck in our final game of the season as we finished fifteenth. Left-back Tom Rogers debuted in this fixture. 1914 - Tom Miller netted a brace as we won 2-1, just two days after losing our first ever FA Cup Final. 1957 - We beat West Ham United in a Second Division meeting, with Billy Liddell netting the only goal of the game from the spot in the final minute. 1974 - John Toshack struck at Upton Park as we drew a top-flight encounter 2-2, with Kevin Keegan on target at the death. Alec Lindsay had a penalty saved by Mervyn Day in the first half. Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard both struck for the home side. International debut once more 1927 - Ex-red Billy Lacey represented his third different country, playing in the Republic of Ireland’s second ever senior international, as they lost 2-1 to Italy ‘B’ in Dublin. This followed eighteen caps he had won for Ireland and another eight for Northern Ireland. Beaten by Rovers We have twice lost to Blackburn Rovers on this day in history. 1929 - Birthday boy Bob Done converted a penalty as we lost a top-flight meeting 2-1 at Ewood Park. 1893 - We lost an Anfield friendly 1-0. Other reds games 1968 – We beat Fulham 4-1 at Anfield with Allan Clarke putting the visitors in front with one of his seven goals against the reds, despite appearing to be offside. Ian Callaghan and Roger Hunt ensure we led at half time, with Hunt and Tony Hateley on target after the break. 1901 – Jack Cox and Bill Goldie struck as we defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in L4. Young England reds 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck for England Under-15’s as they beat the Czech Republic 6-4 in a tournament game in Italy. 2016 – Bobby Duncan scored as England Under-15’s drew 1-1 with Russia in Italy. 2002 - Mark Smyth was on target as England Under-17’s beat Finland 3-2 in a European Championships Finals game in Denmark. Clubmate David Raven was skipper and David Mannix also played. 1993 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron bagged a brace as England Under-21’s beat the Netherlands 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Fratton Park. Rob Jones also featured. On the same day, future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s in their 5-1 thumping of Turkey in a European Championships qualifier. 1988 - Gary Ablett won his only Under-21’s cap as England drew 2-2 with France in the Semi-final of the European Championships at Highbury. Unfortunately, France won 6-4 on aggregate. Future red Michael Thomas also played. On the same day, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Ray Houghton, Steve McMahon, Steve Nicol, ex-red Ian Rush and future reds Glenn Hysén, István Kozma, Dean Saunders and Rigobert Song all also played for their countries. Splashing about 1894 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen nearly died when he dived off a springboard at Southport baths where the team were training, as he could not swim! He made 61 reds appearances in total after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. Potter for the Irish 2004 - Darren Potter made his debut for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 in a friendly in Poland. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund struck as the Finnish Under-21’s beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-1 away from home. Robbie Foy played for Scotland at the same level while Jimmy Ryan featured for the Irish Under-16’s on the same day, with future red Daniel Agger in action for Denmark Under-20’s and future red Ragnar Klavan playing for the senior Estonia side. Other internationals 1983 – Glenn Hysén, Mark Lawrenson, Sammy Lee, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan all played for their countries, with ex-red Joey Jones reaching half a century of caps for Wales in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Bulgaria in Wrexham. 1991 - Future red Nigel Clough netted the only goal of the game as England B beat Iceland in a friendly at Vicarage Road. Fellow future red Paul Stewart also featured. 1998 – Future red Milan Baroš featured for the Czech Republic Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Italy in a tournament in Slovenia. 2001 – Future red Anthony Le Tallec scored twice for France Under-16’s in their 5-0 thumping of Finland in the European Championships Finals in Grimsby. 2015 - Future red Kamil Grabara saved two penalties in a shoot-out as Poland Under-16’s beat Turkey 7-6 after their friendly ended 1-1 in Israel. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they beat Saudi Arabia Under-15’s 2-0 at St. George’s Park. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai captained Hungary Under-167’s in their goalless friendly draw with Turkey in Telki. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-15’s in a 2-1 friendly defeat in Italy. 2022 – Carter Pinnington played as England Under-15’s lost a friendly 4-2 in Italy. -
Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. In comes Cally 1960 - Ian Callaghan signed as a professional. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. He had won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks for the first time on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. 1894 – Keeper John Whitehead signed from Everton. He only made three senior appearances across two seasons with the reds. Semi-final glory 1914 - We reached our first Cup Final, beating Aston Villa 2-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to a brace from James Nicholl. Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the Villa goal that day. 1908 - Anfield hosted the biggest ever FA Cup Semi-final win as Newcastle United beat Fulham 6-0. Reds debuts 1936 - Future boss Phil Taylor netted very late on to secure a point on his first-team bow, with Fred Howe also on target in our 2-2 draw at Derby County. Matt Busby missed a penalty as Sammy Crooks bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Reg Stockill also on target. 1932 – Forward Ted Hancock debuted as we lost 3-0 to Huddersfield Town at Anfield, with Wilf Bott scoring the first of his five goals past us, Dave Mangnall netting the first of his seven against the reds, and George Crownshaw also on the scoresheet. 1953 - Forward Eric Anderson made the first of his 76 reds appearances as we were beaten 2-1 by Charlton Athletic at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne nabbing our consolation. Future red John Evans bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Stuart Leary netting the first of his six past us. 1988 – Vitor Matos was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. He joined the reds as Elite Development Coach in October 2019. 1866 - Scottish inside-right Jimmy Ross was born in Edinburgh. The ‘little demon’ signed from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side before joining Burnley in March 1897. He was a key player in the formation of the Association Footballers’ Union in February 1898, founded in protest at wage restrictions imposed by the FA, and sadly died aged just 36 in June 1902 having succumbed to an acute skin disease. 1895 - Keeper John Jones was born in Holyhead. He signed from his hometown club in September 1924, but only managed four senior appearances while Elisha Scott was injured. He returned to Holyhead in 1925. Trebles galore 1962 - Ian St. John scored a second-half hat-trick as we beat Rotherham United 4-1 in a Second Division game at Anfield, after Roger Hunt had opened the scoring in our most recent League meeting with the Merry Millers. This was his 37th League strike of the season, beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record of 36 set during 1930/31. Don Weston bagged one of his four goals against the reds in a game originally postponed from Christmas. 1942 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble in a 5-2 Wartime League defeat of Rochdale at Anfield. Dicky Dorsett and Stan Polk also struck. 1896 - Centre-forward George Allan netted a hat-trick as we achieved our record equal away League win, 7-0 at Crewe Alexandra. Malcolm McVean bagged a brace, with Joe McQue and Frank Becton also on target that day in what remains the most recent League encounter between the two sides. First and last goals 1959 - Louis Bimpson grabbed his 39th and final reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Lincoln City in a Second Division meeting. Andy Graver struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Roy Chapman also scoring. 1925 – Forward Tom Scott struck the first of his four reds goals as we lost 4-1 at Leeds United. Thomas Jennings scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Russell Wainscott nabbing the first of his five. Jack Armand and Jack Harris also scored for the home side as Matt McQueen took charge of the reds for the hundredth time. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt netted his sixth and last goal for the reds in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Bury. Tom Kay nabbed one of his five goals past us, with Billy Hibbert netting the first two of his thirteen. George Latham played his nineteenth and final reds game. 1894 – Left-back Duncan McLean bagged his sixth and final reds goal in our 3-2 Second Division win at Northwich Victoria. John Givens and Hugh McQueen also got on the scoresheet. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2010 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 in a Premiership game at Anfield. Fernando Torres bagged a brace, with his first strike being a spectacular effort from distance, while Glen Johnson was also on target. 1910 – We lost 2-1 in another top-flight encounter, with inside-forward Jimmy Stewart bagging our goal at Roker Park and defender Tom Chorlton putting through his own net. Willie Clark also struck for the home side. Off, off and off 1998 - Barnsley had Darren Bernard, Chris Morgan and Darren Sheridan all sent off as we won 3-2 at Oakwell, thanks to a Karl-Heinz Riedle brace and a last-minute goal from Steve McManaman. Neil Redfearn struck twice, including one from the spot. End of the road for Heighway 1981 - Steve Heighway made his 331st and final League appearance for the reds as we lost at Arsenal, with Alan Sunderland netting the only goal of the game, one of his six against the reds. 1967 - We also visited Highbury with Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 1-1 draw, a day after our goalless meeting at Anfield. Future Gunners boss George Graham struck one of his four goals past us. Up against the Foxes 2004 - We held Leicester City to a goalless draw at the Walkers Stadium, with Dietmar Hamann playing his 200th reds game. 1964 - Roger Hunt and Alf Arrowsmith were on target as we won 2-0 at Filbert Street, despite being without suspended skipper Ron Yeats. Gordon’s last 1931 - Gordon Hodgson won his third and final cap for England as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in a British International Championships game at Hampden Park. Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop also played for England. On the same day, forward Bob Clark struck his eleventh goal in his 42nd and final reds game as we beat Portsmouth 3-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy McDougall and Dave Wright also on target. 1891 – Future red James Cleland won his only Scotland cap as they beat Ireland 2-1 in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. Digger’s half century 1990 - John Barnes won his fiftieth cap for England as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Clubmates Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon both also featured. On the same day, the Republic of Ireland secured their first win over Wales, at the fifth attempt. Ronnie Whelan skippered a side that also included Steve Staunton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy, while Ian Rush was on the losing side. Young debutants 1987 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen won his first cap for Norway Under-16’s in their 2-0 defeat by England at Lilleshall. 1995 - Vladimír Šmicer debuted for the Czech Republic Under-21’s as they beat Belarus 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä grabbed a brace as Finland won 6-0 in San Marino, the fourth of five consecutive Under-21’s games in which he was on target. 2011 – Ex-reds winger Adam Hammill won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Iceland in a friendly at Deepdale. On the same day, Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured for England Under-17’s as they won 2-1 in Belgium in a European Championships Elite Round qualifier, while ex-red Mikel San José and future reds Thiago Alcântara and Christian Benteke also played for their countries. 2022 – Ex-reds left-back Yasser Larouci netted his only goal at this level on his debut for France Under-21’s as they thrashed Northern Ireland 5-0, with Oakley Cannonier winning his second and final cap for England Under-18’s as they drew 3-3 with Denmark in a tournament in Málaga. Kostas Tsimikas and future red Dominik Szoboszlai also featured in international action. Cut by the Blades We have twice been beaten by Sheffield United in this day in history. 1903 - Jack Cox and Sam Raybould were on target in a 4-2 defeat at Anfield. Walter Bennett scored the last of his five goals against the reds, with Ernest Needham converting a penalty and Archie Needham and Bert Lipsham also scoring as keeper Bill Perkins played his 117th and last reds game, while forward Sam Raybould appeared for the hundredth time. 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane, with Brian Deane bagging two of his eight goals against us. On the move 1995 - Dominic Matteo joined Sunderland on loan. He played just one first-team game while on Wearside, returning to establish himself at Anfield. 2002 - Maxi Rodríguez joined R.C.D. Espanyol from Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys for £4m. He bagged 26 goals in 110 La Liga outings, before joining Club Atlético de Madrid for €5m in July 2005. 1991 - Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Bury on loan from Manchester City, netting once in five outings for the Shakers. Deano’s last 2001 - Ex-red Dean Saunders won his 75th and final Welsh cap, alongside future red Paul Jones, as they drew 1-1 with the Ukraine in a World Cup tie in Cardiff, with Craig Bellamy winning his last cap as a Coventry City player. On the same day, Don Hutchison won his final cap as a Sunderland player as Scotland thumped San Marino 4-0 at Hampden Park. Fellow ex-red Dominic Matteo also played. Meanwhile, Michael Owen netted in England’s 3-1 win in Albania, playing alongside Emile Heskey and ex-red Steve McManaman. Alou Diarra, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Daniel Sjölund, Grégory Vignal and future red Charles Itandje all also played at this level that day. 2005 - Future reds reserves forward Michael Nardiello won his fifth and last Under-16’s cap as a Manchester United player as England beat the Ivory Coast 2-0 in the fifth-place play-off in the Montaigu Tournament in France. Future red David Martin featured for England Under-19’s on the same day. 2007 - Ryan Babel won his last cap as an Ajax player, with Dirk Kuyt also featuring as the Netherlands won a Euro 2008 qualifier 1-0 in Slovenia. 2023 – Alexis Mac Allister won his last cap before moving to Anfield as Argentina thumped Curaçao 7-0 in a friendly. Mohamed Salah scored while captaining Egypt to a 4-0 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win in Malawi, while ex-red Sebastián Coates netted in Uruguay’s 2-1 friendly win in South Korea. Kieran Morrison scored for Northern Ireland Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 4-1 to Denmark in the Netherlands. On the same day, Luke Chambers, Dominic Corness, Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Andy Robertson, future red Wataru Endō and ex-reds Emre Can, Yasser Larouci, Sadio Mané, Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson, with Steve Clarke and Rigobert Song both taking charge of their nations. Young Hungarians on target 2006 - Future reds reserves forward Krisztián Németh grabbed a brace, including a penalty, for Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Ukraine 4-0 in the Elite Round of European Championships qualifiers in Portugal. Jerzy Dudek played for his country on the same day. 2007 - András Simon featured as they lost 1-0 to Norway at the same stage in Périgny in France. 2011 – Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both played for the Under-21’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat in Croatia. Happy birthday Emile 1978 - Emile Heskey was born in Leicester. He arrived from Leicester City for a then club record £10.5m in March 2000, and struck sixty goals in 223 reds games, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in his four years at Anfield. He moved to Birmingham City for £6.25m in May 2004. 1972 – Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron was born in Liverpool. He was at Kirkby between July 2011 and August 2013. 1923 – Inside-right Tom Bennett died from tuberculosis, aged just 31. He only managed one senior appearance, a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea in October 1919 after arriving from South Liverpool in 1916, although he had struck an amazing 77 times in seventy wartime games. Paul Hinshelwood gave the visitors the lead from distance before Kevin Keegan equalised, with Steve Heighway then bagging a brace, and George Graham adding a late second for Palace, the final one of his four strikes past us. Cally played a club-record 857 games in total. Two in 2007 - Young Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed on loan from Boca Juniors, making the move permanent in August 2007. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, leaving permanently for Sporting Clube de Portugal a year later. More League Cup wins 2005 - Steven Gerrard bagged the only goal of the game as we beat First Division Watford 1-0 in the first leg of our Carling Cup Semi-final at Anfield. We won the return by the same score to reach our tenth League Cup Final. 2017 – We lost 1-0 in the first leg of our EFL Cup Semi-final at Southampton, with Nathan Redmond on target. Sadly, we lost the Anfield return by the same score to fall at the final hurdle. Sadio Mané missed the game as he was playing for Senegal in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Congo DR in Brazzaville ahead of the African Cup of Nations. 1995 - An Ian Rush strike handed us a 1-0 Coca-Cola Cup win over Arsenal at Anfield. Anfield milestones 2003 - Michael Owen scored our 400th goal at Anfield in the Premiership as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa. Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as is my love for Liverpool, to resign.” He led us to 76 victories in his 150 games in charge. Smiley happy birthday 1896 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was born in Willington Quay, Northumberland. He signed on in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. He was transferred to West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. Sammy’s goalscoring debut 1982 - Sammy Lee scored on his England debut in a 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. Phil Thompson was making his 42nd and final international appearance, while fellow clubmate Phil Neal also played. Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Graeme Souness and future reds Michael Robinson and John Wark all also played in qualifiers that day. 1923 - Centre-half Billy McDevitt made his reds bow, the first of just four senior outings, as we shared a goalless draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park. Reds farewells 2004 - The funeral of reds legend Emlyn Hughes took place at Sheffield Cathedral. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a glorious treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. 1941 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean died. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. Another super win 2005 - We fell behind to a goal from CSKA Moskva’s Velizar Dimitrov in Monaco, but a brace from substitute Djibril Cissé and a Luis García strike secured us the UEFA Super Cup for the third time, 3-1 after extra time, as we reached a century of goals under the stewardship of Rafael Benítez. The cup was lifted by stand-in skipper Jamie Carragher. Danny’s wonder goal 2006 - Daniel Agger scored his first reds goal, a superb long-range effort to level the scores in our 2-1 home defeat of West Ham United after Bobby Zamora had put the Hammers ahead in our fiftieth League meeting at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt made his debut as a second-half substitute after Peter Crouch had handed us the lead on the stroke of half time. 1972 - We also entertained the Irons, winning 3-2. Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson bagged a brace for the visitors, two of his five goals against the reds, with the scores levelled by John Toshack and then a Bobby Ferguson own goal before Emlyn Hughes grabbed the winner. Most recently 2012 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by the reigning champions Manchester City, with Lucas having to go off early with a thigh injury. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring with a header, with Yaya Touré equalising before a Luis Suárez free-kick put us back in front. However, Carlos Tévez capitalised on a slack Škrtel back-pass to hand the visitors a share of the spoils, the most recent of his four goals past us to date. Andy Carroll made his 58th and last reds appearance, from off the bench. Red births 1882 - Legendary keeper Sam Hardy was born in Newbold, Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and helped us to our second League title in his first season, going on to make 240 appearances before joining Aston Villa for £1,500 in May 1912. 1888 – Defender Ernest Peake was born in Aberystwyth. He arrived as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games before joining Third Lanark in May 1914 1945 - Full-back Tom Lowry was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in April 1963 but only ever played one first-team game, when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in June 1966, going on to set their club record of 436 League appearances that stands to this day. Hola and arrivederci 2007 – Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed from Boca Juniors for £1.675m, having initially joined on loan seven months earlier. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, moving on to Sporting Clube de Portugal permanently a year later. 2011 - Alberto Aquilani joined AC Milan on loan, having spent the previous campaign with Juventus. He netted once in 25 games for the Rossoneri, before being sold to Fiorentina earlier this month. 2016 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie on loan, scoring three times in 21 games. Other departures 1986 - Sammy Lee moved on to Queens Park Rangers after a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. 1963 – Winger Kevin Lewis left the reds for Huddersfield Town. He played 82 reds games after signing from Sheffield United for a club record £13,000 in June 1960 as Bill Shankly’s second capture, helping us to the Second Division title and scoring an impressive 44 times. Turkish delight 2010 - We won 2-1 at Trabzonspor in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Play-off, to reach the group stage 3-1 on aggregate as Roy Hodgson achieved his fourth straight European victory. Teófilo Gutiérrez netted for the home side early on, before a late Remzi Giray Kaçar own goal and Dirk Kuyt strike handed us victory on the night. Billy again 1959 – Billy Liddell bagged a brace in our 4-2 Second Division defeat of Bristol City at Anfield, thus scoring in his fifteenth consecutive season, a club record. Outside the Shankly Gates 1982 - Nessie Shankly officially opened the Shankly Gates at Anfield. Trebles all round 1967 - Tony Hateley scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals that included a penalty, in our 6-0 thumping of Newcastle United. Emlyn Hughes also struck for the first time for the reds in the same game, with a Roger Hunt brace completing the scoring. 1953 - We also entertained the Geordies, with Kevin Baron on target twice in our 2-2 draw. 1961 - Hunt bagged a treble as we thumped Leeds United 5-0 at Anfield, our record equal victory over the Yorkshiremen. Mickey’s milestones 2000 - Michael Owen netted his 49th and fiftieth League goals, in his 98th appearance, although we ended up drawing 3-3 with Southampton in our last game at The Dell, having led 3-0 with just seventeen minutes remaining. The brace took Owen to seven goals in as many games against the Saints. Sami Hyypiä grabbed our other goal. Marian Pahars netted twice with Tahar El Khalej also on target for the home side. Owen’s second strike was also the club’s 8,000th in all competitions. Digger’s ton 1995 - John Barnes’ second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was his hundredth reds strike, while Robbie Fowler netted his fiftieth reds goal. Leeds, Leeds, Leeds We have faced Leeds United at Elland Road three times on this day in history, winning on two occasions. 1964 - Roger Hunt struck as we lost 4-2. Gordon Milne’s penalty was saved by Gary Sprake but Milne reacted quickly and scored from the rebound. He struck nine times in 37 outings while back in Portugal. 2015 – Welsh winger Harry Wilson joined Crewe Alexandra on loan, going on to play seven times for the Alex. He signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and was a classy figure in the centre of our defence on 620 occasions, notching fourteen times and helping us to an amazing trophy haul including eight League titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1944 - Inside-left Gordon Wallace was born in Lanark. He signed professional terms in July 1961 but only made 22 first-team appearances, netting six times, with his most famous game being the first to be screened on the BBC’s Match Of The Day programme, when he grabbed a brace as we beat Arsenal 3-2 at Anfield in August 1964. He had also netted twice on our European debut against Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur earlier that week. He left in October 1967 to join Crewe Alexandra. 1941 - Tony Hateley was born in Derby. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. He was a fine header of the ball in his prime, as was his son, England international striker Mark. Vladi departs 2005 - Vladimír Šmicer signed for Girondins de Bordeaux on a free transfer. He had made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens in May 1999, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. As well as the Champions League, he helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1974 – Midfielder Trevor Storton was sold to Chester. He had struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining the Seals, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Honest John 1910 - John McKenna was named President of the Football League, after the first ever elections to fill this post. He was the reds’ first ever Manager, leading us to the Lancashire League and two Second Division titles, as well as holding the post of Director for the club’s first thirty years. George arrives 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan signed from Leith Athletic for £100. He went on to score 56 goals in 96 reds games across two spells, but had to endure an eight-match suspension from the Scottish FA later that year as he had also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! He also has the distinction of being the first reds player to represent Scotland. Defenders on their way out 2016 – Ex-reds left-back John Arne Riise announced his retirement from football. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He also became his country’s most capped player, winning 110 in total. 2007 - Jon Otsemobor joined Norwich City on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra, after one goal in 65 outings for the Alex in total. 2006 - Young American centre-back Zak Whitbread joined Millwall for £200,000 after a successful loan spell as they were relegated to League One. He had made seven senior reds appearances, all in cup competitions, including our League Cup win at The New Den in October 2004. 1911 – Left-half Jim Bradley re-joined Stoke having struck eight times in 186 reds games since arriving from the Potters in September 1905. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen became England’s youngest ever player to reach fifty caps. Red endings 1914 – Centre-half Joe McQue died aged just forty following an operation at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow. He signed from Celtic in August 1892, netting fourteen times in 142 games before returning north of the border in September 1898 to sign for Third Lanark having helped us to claim the Second Division title twice. 1952 - Outside-right Archie Rawlings died. He signed from Preston North End in March 1924, striking ten times in his 67 reds games before moving on to Walsall in June 1926. 1909 - Stalwart centre-half Alex Raisbeck was sold to Partick Thistle for £500. He netted nineteen times in 341 games in eleven years, becoming our first skipper to lift the League title in 1901. He went on to win a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship. He returned to Anfield in 1939 as a scout, staying in that role until his death ten years later. 2003 - Reserves forward Mark Peers joined Raith Rovers on a free transfer. Births and death 1954 - Forward Alan Waddle was born in Wallsend. He signed from Halifax Town for £40,000 in June 1973 but only made 22 appearances in his four years at Anfield, netting just once, at Goodison Park in December 1973, as his route to the first team was usually blocked by Kevin Keegan and John Toshack, although he was on the bench for the European Cup Final in 1977. He moved on to Leicester City that September. His cousin Chris went on to great things with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique de Marseille and England. 1979 - Late-1990’s reserves winger Nicky Rizzo was born in Sydney. Happy birthday Saint 1938 - Ian St. John was born in Motherwell. He joined from his hometown club in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final and also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. 1988 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi was born in Kumasi in Ghana. He appeared in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 2006 but spent most of his time out on loan. He was released in June 2009 and was last seen playing for Melaka United in Malaysia. 1936 – Left-winger Ron Smith was born in Liverpool. He signed amateur terms in 1955, turning professional two years later. However, he moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1959, having failed to break through to the first team. He was far less successful than expected, scoring just nine times in his 44 reds appearances, despite a bright start of four goals in his first four games. His finest hour probably came when he struck twice to help us come from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Manchester United at Anfield in January 1994. He left Anfield for Manchester City in January 1996 for £1.5m. 1956 – Scottish keeper Tommy Younger signed from Hibernian for £9,000. He made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. Numero seis 2019 – We secured our sixth European Cup after defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the spot after just two minutes, with substitute Divock Origi making the game safe late on. This was the first time we had played a first-class match in June in our history. In comes Brendan 2012 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed as reds boss. He had a mixed first season in charge, followed by a terrific second campaign as we came a close second in the League, before a disappointing third season. He led us to 85 victories in 166 games before being sacked in October 2015. Birth and death 1963 – Centre-half John McGregor was born in Airdrie. He arrived from Queen’s Park in 1979 but failed to make a senior appearance before joining Rangers in May 1987, with whom he won the League Cup, having been released by the reds a couple of weeks earlier. 1985 – Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts died. He only made one first team appearance after signing from Southport in May 1933, moving on to Wigan Athletic in June 1934. He was an all-round sportsman, even playing baseball for England. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! He went on to make 93 appearances, notching three times and helping us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. Disappointing farewells 2022 - Sadio Mané played his 269th and last reds game as we lost the UEFA Champions League Final 1-0 to Real Madrid at the Stade de France outside Paris. The start of the game was delayed due to awful crowd management by the French police and UEFA. Vinícius Júnior bagged the only goal of the game after an hour, one of his five strikes past us to date. 2023 – Diogo Jota netted before Roberto Firmino struck in his final reds game as we took an early two-goal lead at Southampton. James Ward-Prowse and Kamaldeen Sulemana both scored to draw the Saints level at half time, the latter with his first Saints goal. Sulemana and Adam Armstrong both netted to put the home side 4-2 in front, but Cody Gakpo and Jota scored inside a minute to level the scores. Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner all also made their final appearances for the club. On target for England 1976 - Phil Thompson scored the winner for England, his only goal for his country, as they beat Italy 3-2 in the US Bicentenary Tournament in New York. Digger’s debut 1983 - Future red John Barnes made his senior England debut as they were held to a goalless draw in the British International Championships in Northern Ireland. One-nil down, two-one up 2001 - Michael Owen won the cup! A glorious day in our recent history saw us clinch the FA Cup in Cardiff, the second leg of the treble, despite going behind to a Freddie Ljungberg goal after surviving repeated Arsenal attacks, sometimes through dubious means! Two late, late Michael Owen goals won us the cup, and the Millennium Stadium was awash with overjoyed reds. This was the first time we had won an FA Cup Final while wearing an away kit. Clinching three in a row 1984 - We clinched our fifteenth League title by holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane. This was our third consecutive championship, and the second part of a glorious treble claimed by Joe Fagan in his first season in charge. Left-back Alan Kennedy was playing his 300th reds game. Inter trouble 1965 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the European Cup as we lost 3-0 at Internazionale, going out at the Semi-final stage 4-3 on aggregate. The match was highly controversial with Inter’s first goal coming direct from a contentiously-awarded indirect free-kick, and the second coming after the ball was kicked out of Tommy Lawrence’s hands. Ian St. John also had a goal mysteriously disallowed. Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran played his 379th and final reds game in this match. Finishing second 2019 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to secure a club record 97 points, a total only bettered twice in top-flight history, including Manchester City who ended the day on 98. Sadio Mané struck twice to end the campaign on 22 goals, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Alisson Becker kept his 21st League clean sheet of the season to claim the Golden Glove with a total only bettered once in Premier League history. Supersub’s night 1977 - One of Anfield’s greatest ever nights took place as ‘les verts’ of Saint-Étienne arrived with a 1-0 first-leg lead in the European Cup Quarter-final. We eventually won 3-1 on the night, with David Fairclough grabbing the crucial third after Kevin Keegan’s early speculative long-distance strike from a corner had been cancelled out by Dominique Bathenay’s second-half thirty-yard thunderbolt. Ray Kennedy gave us the lead on the night, but we still trailed on aggregate before Supersub’s late winner. 1983 - We beat Widzew Lódz 3-2 in L4 at the same stage, with Ian Rush and David Hodgson adding to a Phil Neal penalty. Unfortunately, we went out 4-3 on aggregate. Thumping the Mancs 2014 - We ran out easy 3-0 winners against David Moyes’ side at Old Trafford, with Steven Gerrard converting penalties either side of half time before hitting the post with a third. Nemanja Vidić was sent off for Manchester United, his fourth dismissal against the reds. Luis Suárez added a late third goal. Debutants galore 1970 - Roy Evans made his first reds appearance, nearly five years into his Anfield career. Recent matches 2002 - Vladimír Šmicer made his hundredth reds appearance in our 2-1 win at Middlesbrough that briefly sent us back to the top of the table, thanks to goals from Emile Heskey and John Arne Riise. 2003 - Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard all netted at Tottenham Hotspur as we came from behind to win 3-2. Ernie Newman and Tom Mason struck for the visitors. 1985 - That was the last time they won at Anfield in the League until they repeated the feat thanks to Garth Crooks scoring the only goal of the game, one of his four past us. 1971 - We also played Spurs, winning a Sixth Round FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane on our way to Wembley, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Two ton Stevie 1974 – Steve Heighway played his 200th reds game, scoring the only goal of our League meeting with Leeds United at Anfield. Setting an unbeaten record 1988 - Craig Johnston scored in our 1-1 draw at Derby County, a game postponed from two months earlier. This was our 31st consecutive undefeated League match, then a League record. However, we lost our next League match, 1-0 at Goodison. Triple centurions 1996 – Robbie Fowler played his hundredth League game, netting as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield with Mark Wright also on target as Roy Evans reached a century of League games in charge and Michael Thomas played his hundredth game for the club. Births and death 1922 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was born in Prescot. He signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, scoring twice in 24 reds games before moving on to Accrington Stanley in January 1951. 1964 – Jörg Schmadtke was born in Düsseldorf. He was appointed Sporting Director in May 2023, after having held similar roles in Germany. 2006 – Defender George Whitworth died. He signed from Stanton Ironworks in February 1950, but only made nine appearances in his three years at Anfield, standing in for Phil Taylor. A fair old thumping 1893 - We trounced Fairfield 5-0 in a Lancashire League meeting, with John Miller netting twice and Hugh McQueen and Tom Wyllie also on the scoresheet, as we also benefited from an own goal. Lee Peltier joined Hull City, while Besian Idrizaj signed on for Luton Town. They both turned out seven times for their temporary employers before returning to Anfield. Billy Wrigglesworth struck twice with Bob Iverson also scoring and Gordon Hodgson converting a penalty as we went in 3-1 down at the break. Iverson and future red Billy Hartill struck for the home side in the second half, as did Alf Hanson and Vic Wright for the reds. 1929 – Birmingham City held us to a goalless draw at St. Andrews. 1907 – We lost 3-1 at Preston North End with Jack Cox bagging our late consolation. 1901 – Andy McGuigan and John ‘Sailor’ Hunter struck as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park. Beaten by the rest 1932 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tosh Johnson featured as England lost 4-1 to The Rest in a trial match in Huddersfield. Also on the move 1989 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined basement side Darlington from Carlisle United for £10,000. He had played 36 times for the Cumbrians. 2005 - Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Shrewsbury Town from Macclesfield Town on a free transfer, netting twice in seven outings for his final League club as a player. For Britain 1908 – George Latham and Maurice Parry both played for Wales as they were thrashed 7-1 by England in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1914 – Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the England goal as they beat Wales 2-0 in the same competition in Cardiff. -
A reds stalwart passes on 2004 - Geoff Twentyman died in a Southport hospital after a long illness. He played 184 times at left-half after signing from Carlisle United for £10,000 in December 1953, bagging nineteen goals. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a position he held for nineteen years. Among the players he recommended to the club were Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and John Toshack. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia in their 5-2 friendly defeat in Malta. Happy birthday Rickie 1982 - Rickie Lambert was born in Kirkby. The boyhood red signed from Southampton for £4m in June 2014, netting three times in 36 games before moving on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. Harry’s farewell 2008 - Harry Kewell played his 139th and final reds game as we were dumped out of the FA Cup by Barnsley, coming off the bench to replace Ryan Babel. Dirk Kuyt gave us the lead but the Tykes hit back through Stephen Foster’s header, with the reds missing a host of good chances before a late, late Brian Howard strike consigned us to a 2-1 Fifth Round defeat at Anfield. Keeper Charles Itandje was making his seventh and last reds appearance. Reds debutants 1992 - Hungarian István Kozma made his reds debut as a substitute for Jamie Redknapp in a goalless FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Ipswich Town. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané both struck in the second half. 1907 – Sam Raybould scored as he played his 200th League game for the reds as we won 3-2 at The Wednesday, with Bill McPherson and Jack Cox also netting. A new England keeper 1907 - Keeper Sam Hardy made his England debut as they beat Ireland 1-0 in a British International Championships game at Goodison Park. He went on to win 21 caps in total. Jack’s farewell 1952 - Jack Balmer played his 288th and final reds League game in a 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic, with Cyril Done netting his 37th and last reds goal and Billy Kiernan nabbing one of his five goals against us. During his reds career he scored an impressive 110 goals in 309 games in all competitions. Gunned out 2014 – We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, when we fell behind to goals from future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski before Steven Gerrard pulled a goal back from the spot. We were later denied a second blatant penalty claim as the home side went on to lift the trophy for the eleventh time later that year. First defeat 1895 - We suffered our first Anfield defeat in the FA Cup, in our fifth home fixture in this competition. Nottingham Forest won 2-0 in this Second Round tie. Young champions 2010 – England Under-17’s won the Algarve Tournament after holding Portugal to a goalless draw. Conor Coady skippered the side, with Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom and future red Conor Thomas also playing. A century on the south coast 2000 - We took part in a friendly at Bournemouth to commemorate the Cherries’ centenary year. Richie Partridge, Patrik Berger, Danny Murphy and Titi Camara all netted in our 4-0 win at Dean Court. On the same day, Brad Friedel played for the USA as they beat Peru 1-0 in a Gold Cup game in Miami. He joined Basel from El Mokawloon El Arab on his twentieth birthday, netting twenty times in 79 games and helping them to claim the League title in 2013 before moving on to Chelsea for a reported £11m in January 2014. He arrived at Anfield from Roma for an initial €42m in July 2017, scoring a stunning 186 goals in 305 games across his first six campaigns, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. In and out 1999 - Sander Westerveld signed from Vitesse Arnhem for £4m, a then British record fee for a goalkeeper. He made 134 appearances, notching four times and helping us to claim the FA Community Shield, but suffered from a succession of injuries before returning to his native Brazil to sign for Grêmio in May 2012. Adiós Xabi 2009 - Xabi Alonso moved to Real Madrid for a club record £30m, after helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and FA Community Shield.
