Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as is my love for Liverpool, to resign.” He led us to 76 victories in his 150 games in charge. Smiley happy birthday 1896 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was born in Willington Quay, Northumberland. He signed on in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. He was transferred to West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. Sammy’s goalscoring debut 1982 - Sammy Lee scored on his England debut in a 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. Phil Thompson was making his 42nd and final international appearance, while fellow clubmate Phil Neal also played. Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Graeme Souness and future reds Michael Robinson and John Wark all also played in qualifiers that day. 1923 - Centre-half Billy McDevitt made his reds bow, the first of just four senior outings, as we shared a goalless draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park. Reds farewells 2004 - The funeral of reds legend Emlyn Hughes took place at Sheffield Cathedral. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a glorious treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. 1941 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean died. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. The Saint’s strike was the club’s 4,000th League goal. 1934 - Legendary striker Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as Leicester City went home on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline. Dave Wright also scored with forward Harold Taylor netting his sixth and final goal. Right-back Bob Done played his 155th and last reds game as inside-left Archie McPherson appeared for the 133rd and final time. Danny Liddle bagged one of his four strikes against the reds. Luis again 2012 – Luis Suárez scored in his third consecutive game, bagging a brace, before left-back José Enrique netted his first reds goal in our 3-0 defeat of Wigan Athletic at Anfield. Red milestones 2001 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Michael Owen’s early headed goal was cancelled out in the second half by Matt Jansen as we extended our unbeaten League run to eight games that season. 1965 - We also faced Rovers, with Ian St. John bagging a brace in a 5-2 win as we topped the table for the first time that season, with Willie Stevenson scoring from the spot and Roger Hunt and Tommy Smith also on target. 1990 – Peter Beardsley bagged the club’s 5,000th goal in the top flight as we beat Coventry City 1-0 at Highfield Road. 1991 – Steve McMahon played his 200th League game for the reds as we were held to a goalless draw at West Ham United. First Anfield League derby 1894 - Everton paid their first League visit to Anfield as the away side. Inside-left Davy Hannah bagged his first reds goal, with Jimmy Ross converting a last-minute penalty as we drew 2-2. Thumping the Imps 1956 - Alan Arnell and Johnny Wheeler grabbed two goals apiece as we beat Lincoln City 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1945 - Jack Balmer netted a brace as we beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in a Wartime League match at Hillsborough, with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet. 1900 - We lost by the same score to The Wednesday at their old Owlerton ground in a top-flight meeting, with Alex Raisbeck and Sam Raybould on the scoresheet. Andrew Wilson netted the first two of his eight strikes against the reds, with Tommy Crawshaw also on target. Tosh exits the Bernabeu again 1999 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Madrid for the second time after nine months in charge, eleven games into the new season. His new £22m signing Nicolas Anelka had not yet set La Liga alight. International farewells 2010 - Jari Litmanen became Finland’s oldest over goalscorer, converting a penalty while winning his 137th and last cap in Finland’s 8-0 thumping of San Marino in a European Championships qualifier in Helsinki, with ex-red Daniel Sjölund also featuring. Fernando Torres won his final cap as a reds player as Spain were thumped 4-0 in a friendly in Portugal, with Raul Meireles and ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso also featuring. Ryan Babel played for the Netherlands for the last time as a red as they beat Turkey 1-0 in another friendly, with future red Nuri Şahin on the losing side. Luis Suárez won his final cap while with Ajax as Uruguay lost 2-0 in Chile. 2014 – Jordon Ibe played his third and last game for England Under-20’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 in Portugal, before winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3. On the same day, ex-red Tom Ince and future reds Danny Ings and Kostas Tsimikas also played for their countries. 2015 – Future red Javier Manquillo won his seventh and last cap for Spain Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Croatia. On the same day, Marko Grujić played for Croatia at the same level for the final time as a Crvena Zvezda player as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Slovenia. Meanwhile, Wataru Endō featured for Japan for the final time while with Shonan Bellmare as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Cambodia, with fellow future red Takumi Minamino also playing. 2018 - Toni Silva won his last cap as a Mamelodi Sundowns player as Guinea-Bissau drew 0-0 in Namibia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Andy Robertson captained his country to a 4-0 friendly win in Albania, with Rafael Camacho, Tom Clayton, Curtis Jones and Sadio Mané also in international action. 1993 - Gérard Houllier took charge of his twelfth and final game as France Manager as they lost 2-1 to Bulgaria at the Parc des Princes to a last-minute goal. This defeat ensured that they missed out on the World Cup in the USA the following summer. On the same day, Jim Magilton won his last cap as an Oxford United player, and eighteenth in all, as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland at Windsor Park. Ex-reds John Aldridge and Ray Houghton both played as the Republic qualified for the World Cup Finals. This was Billy Bingham’s last game as boss of the North. Also in action that day were future reds Gary McAllister and Karlheinz Riedle, while Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland. 1999 - Jamie Redknapp won his seventeenth and final cap for England, with ex-red Don Hutchison bagging the only goal of Scotland’s 1-0 win over Kevin Keegan’s England at Wembley, although the home side progressed to Euro 2000 from the play-offs 2-1 on aggregate. Brad Friedel and future reds Milan Baroš, Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Morientes were also in friendly action that day. 1980 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his fourth and final cap for Zimbabwe as a Vancouver Whitecaps player as they beat Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off in Harare. 2007 - Martin Škrtel won his last cap as a Zenit St. Petersburg player as his Slovakia side lost 3-1 to ex-red Milan Baroš’s Czech Republic in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Prague. 2009 – Škrtel again represented his country as they lost 2-1 to Chile in a friendly in Žilina. Other reds games 2002 – Sunderland held us to a goalless draw at Anfield with visiting keeper Jürgen Macho in fine form. 1979 – Terry McDermott struck twice as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in L4. 1951 - We won 2-1 at Stoke City. Also in international action 2022 – Ben Doak featured for Scotland Under-21’s as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Iceland in Motherwell. Meanwhile, future red Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Takumi Minamino and Xherdan Shaqiri all played in senior friendlies. 2019 – Trent Alexander-Arnold, Naby Keïta, Sadio Mané, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, future red Diogo Jota and ex-reds Toni Silva and Raheem Sterling all played for their countries. 2013 – Ex-reds keeper Charles Itandje featured as Cameroon beat Tunisia 4-1 in the second leg of their World Cup Play-off to reach the Finals in Brazil. 2004 - Ex-red Michael Owen moved into England’s all-time top twenty appearances ranking when he won his 66th cap in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Spain at his then club ground, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Xabi Alonso, Jamie Carragher and future red Fernando Torres also featured in Spain’s 500th international fixture. Meanwhile, future red Mark González won his first cap as an Albacete Balompié player in Chile’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Peru. It was his tenth international appearance to date. Salif Diao won his last cap as a reds player in Senegal’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Algeria in France. New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield. He made a total of 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, in a multitude of positions, and is ranked number two in the club’s all-time appearance holders list. He netted just five times as he helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. 1987 - Reserves defender Brian Mooney joined Preston North End on loan, later signing for them permanently for a £25,000 fee. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, only managing to net 26 goals in 128 appearances while at Deepdale, winning their Player of the Year award in 1988/89 as they missed out on promotion to the Second Division, then moving back into the top flight to sign for Sunderland for £225,000 in 1991. Yet another treble 1990 - Ian Rush bagged a League Cup treble in our 4-1 win at Crewe Alexandra, with his second strike taking him to 250 goals for the club. Steve Staunton also scored as we won 9-2 on aggregate to reach the Third Round. This was one of just two victories we ever enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit, with Steve Nicol featuring for the 300th time. Anfield debutants 2001 - Chris Kirkland made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 after extra time to Grimsby Town in the first game of our Worthington Cup defence, with all the goals coming after the ninety minutes. Gary McAllister nabbed our goal from the spot, his last reds strike, with Marlon Broomes equalising and the winner coming from boyhood red and ex-Evertonian Phil Jevons. Grégory Vignal broke his ankle early on in this game with Frode Kippe making his second and last senior appearances. 1920 - Forward Peter McKinney scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we drew 2-2 with Sheffield United in a top-flight fixture, with Dick Johnson also scoring. Albert Rawson struck twice for the Blades. 1929 - Centre-forward Harold Barton made his reds bow in our 1-1 First Division draw with Blackburn Rovers, with Henry Race and future red Les Bruton on target. International half centuries 1996 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fiftieth cap for Norway as they beat Hungary 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo. Future clubmate Øyvind Leonhardsen also featured. On the same day, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal reached his half-century for Israel as they drew 1-1 with Russia in another qualifier in Tel-Aviv. Also in international action that day were Patrik Berger, Haukur Ingi Gudnason, Steve McManaman and future reds Markus Babbel, Paul Ince, Harry Kewell and Vladimír Šmicer. The lights come on at Goodison 1957 - The floodlights were used at Goodison Park for the first time as we lost 2-0 in a Floodlight Challenge Cup game played there to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Liverpool County FA, with both goals coming from Eddie Thomas. Two tons up 1926 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his 200th reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Newcastle United, with Hughie Gallacher netting one of his eight strikes against us. 1979 – We drew 1-1 at Bolton Wanderers, with Kenny Dalglish heading in our equaliser as Phil Neal played his 200th League game for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs 1909 – Forward James Speakman made his reds debut as we beat Manchester United 3-2 at Anfield thanks to a brace from Jack Parkinson and a goal from Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy Turnbull converted a penalty, the last of his seven goals against the reds with the unrelated Sandy Turnbull scoring one of his five past us. 1965 - We lost 2-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to one of George Best’s seven goals against us and one of Denis Law’s six strikes past the reds, with both goals coming in the first half. International firsts and lasts 1999 - Dietmar Hamann won his first cap as a red, and his eighteenth in total, as Germany were held to a goalless draw by Turkey in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Munich. However, the result was enough to secure them top spot in the group, ahead of their opponents. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege also featured. Meanwhile, Bolo Zenden bagged his first goal as a Barcelona player as the Netherlands were held to a 2-2 friendly draw by Brazil at the Amsterdam ArenA. 2016 – Future red Mohamed Salah struck as Egypt won a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in the Republic of the Congo, his first goal since moving permanently to Roma from Chelsea. 1996 - Jason McAteer netted his first goal for the Republic of Ireland as they beat FYR Macedonia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road, the first ever meeting between these two countries. Ex-red John Aldridge came on as a substitute to win his 69th and final cap, while former red Steve Staunton and future red Robbie Keane also played. 1991 - István Kozma won his last cap as a Dunfermline Athletic player as Hungary were beaten 2-0 at home by Belgium in a friendly. 1984 - Ex-red Avi Cohen bagged his first goal for Israel, while winning his 27th cap, as they drew 2-2 with Greece in a friendly in Athens. 2020 - Takumi Minamino won his first cap as a reds player as Japan were held to a goalless draw by Cameroon in Utrecht. On the same day, Morgan Boyes played for Wales Under-21’s in their 5-0 thumping by Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Leuven, with Kamil Grabara featuring for Poland Under-21’s. More international firsts 2004 – Ex-red Alou Diarra made his senior international debut as a substitute when France were held to a goalless draw by the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier at the Stade de France. Harvey Davies debuted for England Under-19’s in their 3-1 defeat of Mexico in Malaga. Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kennedy stepped up to take the decisive spot kick, as we won the big cup right in the heart of the lions’ den. European glory in Gay Paree 1981 - We won the European Cup for the third time by beating the mighty Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes in Paris thanks to an Alan Kennedy strike nine minutes from time. Unbeknownst to everyone, Ray Clemence was making his 665th and final reds appearance, keeping his 335th clean sheet, with Jimmy Case also playing his 269th and last reds game. Tommy’s testimonial 1977 - Two days after we won the European Cup for the first time, Anfield hosted a testimonial match for Tommy Smith, who had intended to retire. The game featured Liverpool playing a Bobby Charlton Select XI, ending 9-9 with both Tommy Smith and Ray Clemence grabbing a brace! Jimmy Case, David Fairclough, David Johnson, Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott were all also on target. On the same day, Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of SSC Napoli, guiding them to the Italian Cup and a third-place Serie A finish in his first campaign in charge, resigning after a second season which they ended in fifth. Happy birthdays 1980 - Ex-reserves keeper Ian Dunbavin was born in Knowsley.
