Happy birthday Tosh 1949 - John Toshack was born in Cardiff. He signed from his hometown club for a club record £110,000 in November 1970 and scored 96 goals in 247 reds appearances, helping us to three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before returning to Wales to join Swansea City as Player/Manager in February 1978. 1890 – Half-back Charles Hafekost was born in Sunderland. He signed from Gillingham in 1914, but made just one senior reds appearance before joining Darlington Forge Albion the following year. 1997 – Winger Harry Wilson was born in Wrexham. He became the reds’ and Wales’s youngest ever senior international in October 2013 aged just sixteen years and 207 days. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance before being sold to Fulham for a reported £12m in July 2021. Farewell Bugsie 2017 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran died. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment and had another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. Stevie’s treble 2009 - We thumped Aston Villa 5-0 at Anfield with Steven Gerrard bagging his first League treble that included two penalties, meaning that he had successfully converted spot-kicks in three consecutive fixtures. Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring before Albert Riera grabbed his fifth and final reds goal, while Pepe Reina kept his hundredth clean sheet in a club record 197 games. Brad Friedel was sent off for the visitors when conceding the second penalty, although this was later rescinded. Stevie’s unwanted record 2015 - We lost 2-1 at home to Manchester United, with Juan Mata bagging a brace for the visitors. Steven Gerrard was sent off just forty seconds after coming off the bench at the start of the second half, a club record. Daniel Sturridge struck our goal, with Simon Mignolet saving a late Wayne Rooney penalty. Martin Škrtel was later given a retrospective three-match ban after allegedly stamping on David De Gea. League Cup despair 1978 - The only goal of our League Cup Final replay with Nottingham Forest came from a John Robertson penalty awarded for a Phil Thompson foul on John O’Hare that was actually committed outside the box. We therefore had to wait a further three years for our first triumph in this competition. Ian Callaghan was booked by referee Pat Partridge for the only time in 857 first-class games for the reds, while Terry McDermott had a goal disallowed. Luis at the treble 2014 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 6-3 at Cardiff City, despite falling behind twice. This was his sixth and last reds treble as he equalled Robbie Fowler’s Premier league club record of 28 goals in a season. Martin Škrtel struck twice and Daniel Sturridge also on target. Frazier Campbell scored one of his four goals past us, with Jordon Mutch nabbing a brace. New loanees 1990 - Ronnie Rosenthal signed for the reds on loan from Standard de Liège. He made the move permanent for £1m three months later, going on to net a total of 22 goals in 97 reds games before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 in January 1994. 1995 - Keeper Alec Chamberlain arrived on loan from Sunderland as cover for David James. He was on the bench at the Coca-Cola Cup Final later that season, and five subsequent League games, without getting onto the pitch. Reds promoted 2011 - Damien Comolli was promoted from Director of Football Strategy to Director of Football, while Commercial Director Ian Ayre moved up from Commercial Director to Managing Director. Comolli left the club in April 2012, with Ayre departing in February 2017. A reds leader passes on 1936 - John McKenna died in Walton Hospital. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He acted as our boss for the 1895/96 season, guiding us to the Second Division title, before being replaced by Tom Watson. He was later Chairman of the Football League for two decades. Knocking the U’s for six 1986 - Oxford United were the unlucky visitors to Anfield as two goals apiece from Ian Rush and Jan Mølby, plus Mark Lawrenson’s eighteenth and final reds strike and a goal from Ronnie Whelan sent them home on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline, as they just escaped relegation back to the Second Division. Off the mark 1930 – Outside-left Gordon Gunson bagged his first reds goal as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Jimmy Smith also netting. Fagan’s treble 1940 - Willie Fagan scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, as we thumped Crewe Alexandra 6-3 in a Wartime League match at Gresty Road. Mixed fortunes against Spurs 1995 - We held Tottenham Hotspur to a goalless draw at White Hart Lane, with David James saving a penalty from Jürgen Klinsmann. 1987 - We also failed to score at Spurs, losing 1-0 to a Chris Waddle strike. 1975 - Kevin Keegan and Peter Cormack netted as we won 2-0 in north London, with Ian Callaghan playing his 700th reds game. Derby stalemate 1977 - We held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park, our third consecutive scoreless trip across the park. Last outing 1947 – Centre-half John Easdale played his second and final reds game in our 1-1 top-flight draw with Derby County at Anfield. Phil Taylor struck for the reds. Twice against the Seagulls We twice faced Brighton & Hove Albion in the League on this day in the early 1980’s. 1980 - An Alan Hansen goal was enough for victory at Anfield. 1983 - Ian Rush netted a brace in the final quarter of an hour as we came from two goals down at half time to draw 2-2 at the Goldstone Ground. Future red Michael Robinson and Gary Howlett struck for the home side. Twice against the Magpies twice We have twice faced Newcastle United at Anfield on this day in history. 1902 – We went down 1-0, with defender Thomas Hunter playing his fifth and final reds game and inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter turning out for the 45th and last time for us. Future red ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr struck the goal. 1952 – We won 3-0 when Albert Stubbins struck his last two reds goals, with John Smith also on target as Bob Paisley played his 200th League game for us. We have also twice visited Notts County on this day over the years. 1913 - We lost 3-0 at Meadow Lane with Jack Peart bagging a treble, the first of his four strikes against us. 1958 - We won 2-0, with Jimmy Melia and Louis Bimpson on the scoresheet. International beginnings and end 1890 - Future reds player, Manager and Director Matt McQueen won the first of his two senior caps for Scotland, helping them to thump Wales 5-0 in the British International Championships in Paisley. 1994 – Future reds midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri won the first of his five senior caps for France as they beat Chile 3-1 in a friendly in Lyon. 2012 – Future red Samed Yeşil won his third and last cap for Germany Under-18’s in their 3-2 home friendly defeat by France. 2019 - Bobby Adekanye debuted for the Dutch Under-20’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Mexico in Rijnsburg. Rhys Williams winning his first cap for England Under-18’s as they lost 1-0 to the Czech Republic in the UAE Sports Chain Cup in Dubai, with Bobby Duncan and Curits Jones also featuring. 2023 – Dominic Corness and Jarell Quansah won their first caps for England Under-20’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Germany at the Manchester City Academy Stadium, with Harvey Davies also in action. On the same day, Luke Chambers, Bobby Clark, Melkamu Frauendorf, Caoimhín Kelleher and Kieran Morrison all also played for their countries. Strikers on target 2013 – Luis Suárez scored for Uruguay in their 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with Paraguay in Montevideo. Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge scored his first senior goal while winning his first cap as a reds player in Roy Hodgson’s England’s 8-0 thumping of San Marino in Serravalle, with future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also on target. Ex-red John Arne Riise played his 110th and last game for Norway as they lost 1-0 to Albania in Oslo. Ben Woodburn and ex-red Joe Allen both also featured, with Corey Whelan turning out for the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s on the same day. On the same day, future red Ozan Kabak scored his first goal for Turkey Under-18’s, converting a spot kick as they beat Belgium 2-0 in a friendly in Mons, while Olympiacos’s Kostas Tsimikas scored for Greece Under-21’s for the first time while captaining them in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of San Marino in Xanthi. Ex-reserves on the move 2001 - Paul Dalglish joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Norwich City. He played six times for the Latics and returned for the whole of the following season. On the same day, future red Jonjo Shelvey appeared for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the USA in the Montaigu Tournament in Les Brouzils. 2007 – Future red Philipp Degen played for Switzerland as they beat Jamaica 2-0 in a tournament game in the USA. 1989 – Future red Karlheinz Riedle played for West Germany in their 2-1 friendly win in Bulgaria. 1988 – Future red Nigel Clough played for England Under-21’s as they beat Scotland 1-0 in the second leg of their European Championships Quarter-final at his home City Ground, to progress 2-0 on aggregate. Future reds coach Steve Clarke played for Scotland on the same day. 1972 – Larry Lloyd captained an England Under-23’s side that also included Kevin Keegan as they lost 1-0 to East Germany at Ashton Gate. 1919 – Elisha Scott played for Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Scotland in an unofficial Victory International at Ibrox. -
God’s treble 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged a hat-trick as we came from behind to beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield, in what was boss Roy Evans’ hundredth game in charge. Ian Wright had put the visitors ahead from the spot with one of his seven strikes against the reds. 2000 - We again faced the Gunners at home, with strikes from Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Nick Barmby and substitute Fowler giving us a comprehensive 4-0 win. A Milanese arrival 2001 - Milan Baroš officially completed his signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m. He grabbed a total of 27 goals in 108 reds games, helping us to claim the Worthington Cup in 2003 and the Champions League two years later before joining Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005. On the same day, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sent off as Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield. The Gunners went ahead through a Thierry Henry penalty, one of his nine strikes against us, and Freddie Ljungberg before Jari Litmanen pulled one back for the reds. Meanwhile, Harry Kewell signed for Leeds United. He went on to net 63 times in 242 games for the Yorkshire side before his switch to Anfield in July 2003. 2020 – Left-back Calum Scanlon signed from Birmingham City for £550,000. Nottingham wins 1905 - Joe Hewitt and Robbie Robinson were on the scoresheet as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. 1922 - Dick Forshaw struck a brace to give us a 3-1 win at their near-neighbours Nottingham Forest, with Dick Johnson also netting and Bobby Parker bagging the last of his eight goals past us. This was the first of three wins in four days as we went on to claim the title for the fourth time. More trebles 1899 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite scored a treble, his first goals for the club, as we beat Glossop 5-2 at Anfield, with inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scoring both our other goals and Lorenzo Evans netting twice for the visitors. This was our hundredth home League match. 1893 - Malcolm McVean bagged a hat-trick as we won a friendly 6-2 at Ardwick, who later became Manchester City. James Stott nabbed a brace with James McBride also on the scoresheet. No joy against the Geordies We have failed to win any of our three meetings with Newcastle United on this day in history. 1933 - Berry Nieuwenhuys bagged our consolation as we lost 2-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Richardson struck the first of his eight goals against the reds, with Ron Williams also on the scoresheet as left-half Jimmy McDougall played his 200th reds game. The other two games both ended in 1-1 draws at St. James’ Park. 1967 - Ian St. John netted. 1996 - Robbie Fowler was on target to ensure we stayed top of the table over Christmas. Alan Shearer had put the home side in front with one of his eight goals past us. Anfield wartime foursomes 1939 - Cyril Done scored four times as we beat New Brighton 6-2 in a Wartime League game, with Len Carney and Harry Eastham nabbing the others. 1916 - Thomas Bennett also netted four as we thumped Port Vale 5-1, with John Bamber also on target. Bert’s century 1961 – We lost a Second Division fixture 1-0 at Leeds United with keeper Bert Slater playing his hundredth reds game. Billy Bremner struck one of his five goals against the reds as we remained top of the table. Other home wins We have won two other First Division matches on this day in history. 1911 - Sam Gilligan bagged the only goal of our meeting with Oldham Athletic. 1972 - John Toshack struck twice without reply as we entertained Coventry City. 1944 - We also won a Wartime League meeting with Tranmere Rovers in L4, with Phil Taylor grabbing a brace and Cecil Baines also on the scoresheet in a 3-0 victory. Goalless 1989 - Manchester United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, the last time we failed to score at home that season. Ray Houghton reached a century of reds appearances that day. Red departures 1979 - 1920’s forward Peter McKinney died. He only made three reds appearances, scoring once, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 2009 – Ex-reserves centre-back Godwin Antwi signed for Danish side Vejle Boldklub, having been released by the reds back six months earlier. Off on loan 2004 - Ex-reds loanee keeper Paul Jones signed for Watford on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played eleven times for the Hornets, including both legs of our Carling Cup Semi-final encounter in January 2005. 1994 - Ex-reds winger Jimmy Carter re-joined Second Division Oxford United on loan from Arsenal. He made four appearances in this spell. 1999 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Carlisle United on a temporary basis. He subsequently had further loan spells with Crewe Alexandra, Sheffield United and Bury as he failed to make the break-through at Anfield. Rafa dismissed 2010 – Ex-reds boss Rafael Benítez was sacked as Manager of Internazionale. He had led them to the Italian Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, but only twelve wins in his 25 games in charge overall. Best keepers 2007 - Pepe Reina was presented with the 2006/07 Player of the Year award from the Merseyside branch of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club. Dirk Kuyt finished in second place in the voting, with Peter Crouch in third. 2011 – Ex-reds keeper Nikolay Mihaylov was presented with Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award. He had signed from Levski Sofia in July 2007, but work permit problems meant that he spent his reds career on loan with Twente in the Netherlands before joining them permanently for €1.8m in February 2010. Fernando’s happy day 1999 - Fernando Morientes married Vitoria in the San Juan de Los Reyes cathedral in Toledo. Also in international action 1998 – Ex-red Yossi Benayoun played as Israel beat FR Yugoslavia 2-0 in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. 2004 – Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos featured as Greece beat a Thessaloniki Selection 1-0 in a charity match. -
Ged takes charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a reds game for the first time as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the first two of his seven strikes past us. Debutants galore 1970 - John Toshack made his reds bow as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City, with ex-red Geoff Strong being given a rapturous reception as he led his new side out. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. 1937 - Left-back Phil Ferns was born in Liverpool. The local lad struck once in 28 reds games after signing on at Anfield in September 1957. He made enough appearances in 1963/64 to claim a League title medal but moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in August 1965. 1971 – Academy Manager Alex Inglethorpe was born in Epsom in Surrey. He left Tottenham Hotspur in November 2012 to move to Melwood as Reserve Team Head Coach. 2002 – French centre-back Billy Koumetio was born in Lyon. He signed as a professional in August 2020, making his senior bow in a UEFA Champions League game at Midtjylland four months later. On the same day, reds youngster Ryan Wilkie played for Scotland Under-18’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Germany. Good fortune against PNE 1896 - We drew 1-1 at Deepdale with Bill Michael nabbing our goal. 1908 - Robert Robinson and Joe Hewitt struck as we beat Preston North End 2-1 in another top-flight meeting at Anfield. Herbert Danson nabbed one of his four goals against the reds. Un-fair defeat 1967 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, going down 2-1 at TSV 1860 München, although we progressed to the Third Round 9-2 on aggregate. Half-back Willie Stevenson became our first ever European substitute, coming on for Tony Hateley in this game. On the same day, ex-red Graeme Souness captained Scotland as they beat Spain 3-1 at Hampden Park, with Kenny Dalglish on target with his thirtieth and final international goal, equalling Denis Law’s record. Steve Nicol won his third cap in the same match. Vladimír Šmicer also played, while there was better news as Baroš had now played enough international games to make his work permit application to join the reds likely to succeed. Dietmar Hamann and ex-red Christian Ziege were more fortunate, as Germany beat the Ukraine 4-1 in Dortmund to reach the Finals. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song and future red Fernando Morientes both featured in friendlies. 1999 – Hamann and future red Ziege also played for Germany in their 1-0 friendly win in Norway, with Vegard Heggem, future red Markus Babbel and ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen all also featuring. Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kennedy stepped up to take the decisive spot kick, as we won the big cup right in the heart of the lions’ den. Phil Neal, Graeme Souness, in his 359th and final reds appearance, and Ian Rush had been our other successful penalty takers. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Heysel: a black day in our history 1985 - If April 15th is the saddest day in the club’s history, May 29th is surely the lowest. 39 football fans died at the Heysel stadium in Brussels before our European Cup Final against Juventus. Although many factors contributed to the tragedy, it is inescapable that violence by reds fans played a major role in the deaths of 32 Italians, four Belgians, two Frenchmen and one man from Northern Ireland. Fourteen British people were later convicted of manslaughter and assault, with three Belgian officials also facing charges relating to the policing of the event. R.I.P. Happy birthday Gary Mac 1964 - Gary McAllister was born in Motherwell. He arrived on a free transfer in July 2000, proving inspirational in the run-in to the treble that season. He netted nine goals in 87 reds games before moving back to Coventry City as Player/Manager in May 2002. He returned to Anfield as a First Team Coach last summer, moving into an ambassadorial role after Brendan Rodgers was sacked. 1896 – Winger Chris Harrington was born in Edge Hill. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Rushie starts out 1979 - Ian Rush signed as a professional for Chester. He bagged seventeen goals in 39 games at Sealand Road, before moving to Anfield for £300,000 the following April. Smiling at a treble 1925 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and the visitors’ Hughie Gallacher each bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 6-3 at Anfield. Centre-half David Pratt scored his only reds goal, with Cyril Oxley and Dick Forshaw also on the scoresheet. Tommy’s last 1913 – Centre-forward Tommy Gracie bagged his fifth and final reds goal as we beat Manchester City 4-2 at Anfield, with Jackie Sheldon netting a brace and Billy Lacey also on the scoresheet. Match abandoned 1893 - Our friendly with Accrington Stanley at their Crown Ground was abandoned after 75 minutes due to bad weather. We were losing 1-0 at the time. He struck nineteen times in 222 reds games across his first six seasons, helping us to keep 96 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He struck once in two Wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. 1990 – Scottish reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven was born in Thurso.
