Shanks starts out 1959 - Bill Shankly’s first game in charge ended in a convincing 4-0 defeat at home by Cardiff City, who were promoted ahead of us that year. A crowd of 27,291 watched the floodlit game which resulted in our eighth League defeat of the season and remained our most recent meeting with the Bluebirds until our Carling Cup tie in October 2007. Full-back Allan Jones played the first of his five reds games, as Derek Tapscott struck the last two of his six goals against the reds, with Johnny Watkins nabbing the final one of his four past us, and Joe Bonson one of his five. Ged takes charge 1998 - Gérard Houllier took sole charge of a reds game for the first time as we lost 3-1 at home to Leeds United. Robbie Fowler’s penalty was cancelled out by three late Leeds goals in front of the Kop, including one from Alan Smith on his debut, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagging the first two of his seven strikes past us. Debutants galore 1970 - John Toshack made his reds bow as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Coventry City, with ex-red Geoff Strong being given a rapturous reception as he led his new side out. 1925 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jacks

Trebles for 1984 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick in torrential rain as we beat SL Benfica 3-1 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round encounter. 1998 - Michael Owen scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Anfield. Steve McManaman grabbed the other, with Dougie Freedman on target for the visitors. Off the mark 1959 - Winger Johnny Morrissey nabbed his first reds goal as we suffered a 2-1 Second Division defeat at Sheffield United when we conceded two penalties inside three minutes, both converted by Graham Shaw. 1928 - We also faced the Blades, losing our top-flight meeting at Anfield 2-1, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation. Scottish-born South African international left-back Jimmy Gray played his only reds game. Fred Tunstall bagged one of his eight goals past us, with Thomas Boyle also on target. 4-3 for the first time 1996 - We played out a real humdinger with Newcastle United at Anfield. Robbie Fowler put us ahead after two minutes, but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after one of Les Ferdinand’s six strikes past us and a David Ginola goal. Robbie Fowler levelled the scores with his 22nd strike in his last 21 outings, but Faustino Asprilla put the visitors ahead again two minutes later. Stan Collymore tied the match once more, and then grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner right at the death, in a match later voted the best in the Premiership’s first decade. A new record captur
