    Happy birthdays 1961 - Ronnie Whelan was born in Dublin. He signed from Home Farm for £35,000 in September 1979 and played 493 times in his fifteen years with the reds, netting 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United for free in September 1994. 1920 - Right-back Bill Shepherd was born in Liverpool.     Happy birthday Mr Kennedy 1951 - Ray Kennedy was born in Seaton Delavel. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games.     Winning trophies We have twice won major honours on this day in our history. 1974 - We ‘undressed’ Newcastle United 3-0 at Wembley to win our second FA Cup, thanks to a brace from Kevin Keegan and a Steve Heighway goal. Future reds Alan Kennedy and Terry McDermott both played for United. 1976 - We clinched our ninth League title, Bob Paisley’s first as Manager, as we won 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We only needed a point, while Wolves had to win to stay up. Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Ray Kennedy all scored in the last quarter of an hour after Steve Kindon had put Wolves ahead.

    Unhappy hat-tricks 1961 - Winger Kevin Lewis scored a treble in our Second Division fixture at Bristol Rovers, but we still went down 4-3. Bobby Jones bagged a brace as Peter Hooper netted the last of his seven goals against us, with Harold Jarman also on target. 1908 - Joe Bache scored a hat-trick for Aston Villa in their 5-1 top-flight victory over us at Villa Park, three of his nine strikes against the reds, with our goal coming from inside-left Ronald Orr on his reds debut.
