Red endings 1978 - Tommy Smith played his 638th and final reds game as we beat Arsenal at Anfield in the League. David Fairclough grabbed the only goal of the game as we secured the points to ensure our sixteenth consecutive season of European football. 1928 - Left-winger George Pither played his twelfth and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Leicester City. Tommy Reid netted our goal, with Arthur Chandler bagging one of his six past us. 1998 - Rob Jones made the last of his 243 reds appearances in our 4-1 defeat at Chelsea. Karlheinz Riedle nabbed our consolation that day. Mark Hughes bagged the last two of his nine goals past us, with future reds coach Steve Clarke and Tore André Flo also netting. 1959 – Keeper Tommy Younger played his 127th and last reds game as we drew 3-3 in a Second Division match at Swansea Town to finish the season in third. Alan A’Court scored after just a minute with Len Allchurch netting one of his five goals against the reds With Ray Daniel on target twice as we were 3-1 down at half time. Jimmy Melia scored twice after the break to level the scores. 1953 - We also faced the Blues in the top flight, with Rob’s grandfather Bill Jones and Louis Bimpson on target in our 2-0 home win. This was our last game of the season, as we finished in seventeenth position. First FA Cup Final 1914 - We played in our first FA Cup Final, but lost to Burnley in the last one ever to be staged at Crystal Palace. Tom Miller had a strike disallowed for offside for the reds before ex-Evertonian Bertie Freeman volleyed the only goal of the game, one of his nine against us. King George V that day became the first reigning monarch to attend an FA Cup Final. Reaching European finals 1973 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the UEFA Cup, 2-1 at holders Tottenham Hotspur in our sixth meeting of the season. However, Steve Heighway’s strike took us through to the Final on the away goals rule despite Martin Peters’ brace, two of his fourteen strikes against the reds. 1984 - An Ian Rush brace booked our place in a fourth European Cup Final, as we won 2-1 at Dinamo Bucureşti, to go through 3-1 on aggregate. Rush reached forty goals for the season in a match played in a fiery atmosphere after Graeme Souness had broken Lica Movilă’s jaw in the first leg at Anfield. Maxi off the mark 2010 – Maxi Rodríguez bagged his first reds goal as we won 4-0 at Burnley, following seven away fixtures without victory. Steven Gerrard bagged a brace early in the second half to open the scoring, with David N’Gog also netting in injury time. Edging towards Athens 2007 – Future red Joe Cole bagged the only goal of our Champions League Semi-final first leg defeat at Chelsea, as the Blues were unable to get past Pepe Reina a second time, despite an under-par reds performance. Jamie Carragher played his 89th European game, equalling Ian Callaghan’s club record. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Dirk’s ton up 2009 – Dirk Kuyt played his hundredth League game for the reds as we won at Hull City. Xabi Alonso bagged his nineteenth and final reds goal to open the scoring just before the break, pouncing on his own rebounded free kick. Caleb Folan was sent off for the home side before Kuyt headed in. Geovanni pulled one back with Kuyt then making it 3-1. Happy dot birthday 2001 - The official club website liverpoolfc.tv was launched. It remains the most popular football club website in the world. Howard’s way 1981 - Winger Howard Gayle scored his only reds goal, on his full debut, as we held Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane, with Glenn Hoddle netting one of his four goals past us for the home side. Another trophy 1931 – We won the Lancashire Senior Cup for the fourth time after beating Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield, with Dave Wright bagging a brace and Gordon Hodgson and Archie McPherson also netting. 1938 – We lost 3-1 at Old Trafford in the same competition, with goalscorer Ted Harston having to go off injured, leaving us down to ten men for more than seventy minutes. Kop farewell 1994 - Ashley Neal struck from the penalty spot in our 3-2 reserves defeat by Nottingham Forest at Anfield. This was the final reds goal scored in front of the standing Kop, two weeks after Julian Dicks’ famed spot-kick at the same end of the ground, and six days before Jeremy Goss’s historic strike. A derby win 1987 - Blues old boy Steve McMahon put us ahead against Everton at Anfield. Kevin Sheedy equalised with a free-kick past Mike Hooper, before flicking the V’s to the Kop. Ian Rush added two more to equal Dixie Dean’s derby scoring record of nineteen, as we won 3-1. However, our neighbours still went on to reclaim the League title. The Storer ends 1908 - Ex-reds keeper Harry Storer died of consumption aged just 37. He signed from Woolwich Arsenal in December 1895 for £75, taking over from the versatile Matt McQueen between our sticks. He made a total of 121 reds appearances before retiring in 1901. Signing on 1900 – Scottish right-back Tom Robertson signed from Stoke for £400. He played 47 times without notching, helping us to claim our first League title in 1901 before joining Southampton in May 1902, with whom he won the Southern League in two successive years. First and last caps 1970 - Peter Thompson won his sixteenth and final cap as England held Scotland to a goalless draw in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes also played. 1964 - Roy Evans won his first cap for England Schoolboys, playing in their 1-1 draw with West Germany at Wembley Stadium. Boing boing boing We have faced West Bromwich Albion three times on this day. 1896 - We beat them 2-0 in a Test Match at Anfield, thanks to goals from George Bradshaw and George Allan, helping to take us back into the top flight. Half-back Barney Battles made his fifth and final appearance in his first spell at Anfield in this game. 1964 - Roger Hunt struck twice as we drew at The Hawthorns in a First Division fixture. John Kaye scores the first of his four goals against the reds, with Clive Clark netting the first of his seven past us. 2015 - Fabio Borini made his 38th and last reds appearance as we were held to a goalless draw at The Hawthorns. All-star reds 2019 – Trent Alexander-Arnold, Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and ex-red Raheem Sterling were al named in the PFA Team of the Year, with van Dijk going on to be named the Player of the Year the following day. 2004 - Steven Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year, coming third in the Player Of The Year vote behind eventual winner Thierry Henry after a terrific season for the reds. 2010 – Future red James Milner was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year after scoring twelve times in 49 games for Aston Villa that season. He was also named in the Team of the Year. Milan for the Czechs 2001 - Future red Milan Baroš made his senior international debut, scoring in their 1-1 friendly draw with Belgium in Prague. Patrik Berger also played, while Igor Bišcan, future reds Jerzy Dudek, Alex Manninger and Bolo Zenden, and ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen all also played for their countries that day. Meanwhile, Abel Xavier won his final cap as an Everton player, and seventeenth to date, as Portugal were thumped 4-0 by France in a friendly at the Stade de France. Gary Mac for Scotland 1990 - Future red Gary McAllister made his debut for Scotland as they lost 1-0 to East Germany in a friendly at Hampden Park. Gary Gillespie also featured. On the same day, Dean Saunders struck twice for Wales as they lost 4-2 to Glen Hysén’s Sweden in Stockholm. These were his first goals as a Derby County player. Meanwhile, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright both came off the bench in England’s 4-2 defeat of Czechoslovakia in another friendly at Wembley. 2012 – Ex-red Gary Mackay-Steven scored his first goal for Scotland Under-21’s as they lost 4-1 to Italy in a friendly at Easter Road, with Danny Wilson also featuring. Future red Mohamed Salah turned out for Egypt Under-23’s on the same day, with Krisztián Adorján and future red Ádám Hajdú both playing for Hungary Under-19’s. Stan for the Irish 1990 - Steve Staunton scored the only goal of the Republic of Ireland’s friendly encounter with the USSR at Lansdowne Road. It was his first goal for his country, and the only one in his first spell as a red. Ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. 2001 - Staunton won his 87th cap, and first one in his second spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Irish beat Andorra 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier at the same venue. Mark Kennedy was winning his last cap as a Manchester City player, while future red Steve Finnan also featured. Also on the mark 2018 - Future red Harvey Elliott netted as England Under-15’s lost 4-3 to Japan in a tournament game in Italy. 2013 – Ex-reds winger Mark González scored as Chile held Brazil to a 2-2 friendly draw in Belo Horizonte. 2001 – Future red Florent Sinama-Pongolle grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, as France Under-16’s beat Croatia 3-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Harrogate. Future red John Arne Riise netted as Norway Under-21’s drew 2-2 with Portugal. 1995 - Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal struck as Israel lost 4-3 to Poland in a World Cup qualifier in Zabrze. Future red Fernando Morientes was also in international action that day. Honoured 1921 - Long-serving keeper Elisha Scott captained a Central League eleven in their 2-0 win over a Football Combination side. 2013 – Midfielder Jay Spearing was named Player of the Season by the Bolton Wanderers Supporters’ Association, after a successful loan campaign with the Trotters following which he made the move permanent. Other reds games 1951 – Aston Villa held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1936 – We drew 0-0 at Sheffield Wednesday. 1925 – We lost 2-0 at Bolton Wanderers. David Jack struck one of his nine goals past us with Joe Smith bagging one of his twelve. 1903 – Sam Raybould netted twice as we beat Bury 2-0 in L4. Babb starts out 1989 - Phil Babb signed as a professional for Millwall. He never made a senior appearance for his first club, moving on to Bradford City in August 1990 on a free transfer. Thomas the skipper 1989 - Future red Michael Thomas captained England Under-21’s as they beat Albania 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Portman Road. David Burrows also played. Also in international action 1981 – Bruce Grobbelaar played for Zimbabwe as they lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 2-0 in Zambia. 1995 – Future red Fernando Morientes appeared for Spain Under-20’s as they lost 3-0 to Argentina in their World Championships Semi-final in Qatar. 2000 – Richie Partridge and future red Milan Baroš both played in Under-21’s internationals. 2002 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-18’s in their 3-1 win in Croatia. 2006 - Future reds Michael Collins and Shane O'Connor both featured as the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s lost 1-0 to Croatia in a tournament game in Italy. 2022 – Carter Pinnington captained England Under-15’s as they thumped Chile 5-0 in a friendly in Italy.

African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. New boss 1923 - Matt McQueen was appointed Manager after David Ashworth’s departure for Oldham Athletic two months earlier. He helped the reds to retain the League title at the end of that season, taking charge of the team on 229 occasions in all. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times, then joining the club’s board towards the end of the First World War. Red milestones 2023 – Fabinho played his 200th reds game as we beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Cody Gakpo bagging his first goal for the club as Jürgen Klopp secured his 250th victory as boss. Mohamed Salah scored before the break, with Gakpo netting early in the second half. Happy birthday Mamadou 1990 – Centre-half Mamadou Sakho was born in Paris. He signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m in September 2013, netting three times in eighty games before falling out with boss Jürgen Klopp and being sent off to Crystal Palace on loan in February 2017, making the move permanent for an initial £24m six months later. 1870 – Half-back Tom Cleghorn was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02. Carra dismissed 1999 - We lost 1-0 to Charlton Athletic, our first match at The Valley since 1961. Jamie Carragher was sent off for a supposed elbow, while John Barnes made his debut for the Addicks, as a substitute. Keith Jones was on target to net the first Charlton goal in this fixture since 1960. 1954 - We also lost to Charlton, being beaten 3-2 at Anfield. Ex-Addick Johnny Evans and inside-forward Eric Anderson struck for the reds, while keeper Russell Crossley played his 73rd and final reds game. Eddie Firmani bagged a brace, with Syd O’Linn also on target. Fred’s treble 1915 - Fred Pagnam grabbed a hat-trick as we shared six goals with Chelsea in a League game at Anfield. Donald McKinlay put through his own net, with Harold Halse scoring the last of his four goals against the reds and Bobby Thomson also netting for the Blues as Elisha Scott saved a late penalty from Robert Abrams. 1982 - We also faced the Blues, losing an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-0 to the then-Second Division outfit at Stamford Bridge. Peter Rhoades-Brown and Colin Lee struck the goals. Super sub’s ton up 1979 – David Fairclough reached a century of reds games in our League meeting with Birmingham City, originally postponed from a month earlier. Graeme Souness struck the only goal at Anfield. Also recently 2022 – Fabinho bagged the only goal of our trip to bottom-of-the-table Burnley from a corner. Luther at last 1988 - Luther Blissett finally breached the reds’ defence in a League game at Watford to score the first goal against us in all competitions for 994 minutes, a then club record. We still won comfortably in a mud bath, 4-1, with Peter Beardsley bagging a brace to take his tally to eight in as many games, to add to goals from John Aldridge and ex-Hornet John Barnes. Mixed FA Cup fortunes We have won three of our four FA Cup ties on this day over the years, with the other tie being our defeat at Chelsea in 1982. 1971 - A Chris Lawler goal saw off Southampton in the Fifth Round at Anfield, as we headed towards Wembley. 1993 - We visited The Dell in a League game, losing 2-1 with Don Hutchison netting for the reds. 1932 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson scored to defeat Grimsby Town at Anfield, in another Fifth Round tie, just a week after we had been thumped 5-1 by them in a top-flight fixture at Blundell Park. We were then knocked out by Chelsea at Anfield in the next round. 1897 - Our first cup tie on this day was played at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground, with Malcolm McVean bagging his 43rd and final goal for the club and centre-half Robert Neill also scoring in our 2-1 win. Willie Donnelly made his eighth and final appearance in our goal, with inside-right Jimmy Ross playing for the 85th and last time. The reds prepared for this game by spending the week in Worcestershire, going straight there from our away match at Stoke City the previous Saturday. We lost out to Aston Villa that season after reaching our first ever Semi-final. Cyril’s treble 1943 - Cyril Done grabbed a hat-trick as we beat Tranmere Rovers 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Michael Hulligan bagged our other goal. Firsts and last 2021 – Loanee centre-half Ozan Kabak made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 at Leicester City behind closed doors. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring after the break, but James Maddison and Harvey Barnes struck either side of one of Jamie Vardy’s ten goals against us in what was Jürgen Klopp’s 300th game in charge of the reds. 1904 – Right-half Bobby Robinson played the first of his 271 reds games as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke. Forward Joe Hewitt also debuted in this game, the first of his 164 appearances. 1909 - Left-half Jim Bradley struck his eighth and final reds goal in the first minute of our 4-1 thumping of Leicester Fosse at Anfield, with full-back Bob Crawford making his reds bow and outside-left Michael Griffin playing his fourth and final reds game. Arthur Goddard nabbed a brace, with Sam Bowyer also on target. 1890 – Frank Grayer was born in Southampton. He signed from his hometown club for £100 in July 1912 but only played one senior reds game, as right-back in our 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United in April 1914. He was so badly wounded during the First World War that he was unable to play football again. International debuts 2019 – Oakley Cannonier played for England Under-15’s for the only time as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Belgium at St. George’s Park. 2002 – Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first senior cap as Greece drew 2-2 with Sweden in a friendly in Thessaloniki. 1937 - Future reds right-back Billy Hood won his only international cap, playing for Ireland as they thumped England 5-1 in an amateur international in Belfast. 1909 - Ex-reds winger Arthur Berry won his only cap for England as they beat Ireland 4-0 in the British International Championships at Valley Parade. Reds keeper Sam Hardy also played for the home side, while future red Billy Lacey made his debut for Ireland in the same game. Friendly scoring for their countries 2002 - Dietmar Hamann netted in Germany’s 7-1 defeat of Israel in Kaiserslautern. Substitute Vladimír Šmicer was on target on the same day as the Czech Republic won 4-3 in Cyprus, with Milan Baroš also playing. Real Madrid’s Fernando Morientes struck as Spain drew 1-1 with Portugal in Barcelona. Meanwhile, future red Djibril Cissé bagged a brace as France Under-21’s thumped their Belgian counterparts 5-1 in Boulogne. This was the third consecutive international in which he had found the net. Another future red, Craig Bellamy, scored as Wales held Argentina to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Cardiff. Also playing for their countries that day were Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey, David Raven, John Arne Riise and Mark Smyth, as well as ex-reds Brad Friedel, David James, Jim Magilton and Øyvind Leonhardsen, and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Joe Cole, Ádám Hajdú and Paul Jones. Final caps 1926 - Ted Parry won his fifth and final cap for Wales as they lost 3-0 to Northern Ireland in the British International Championships in Belfast. Ex-red Billy Matthews also won his final Welsh cap in this game, and only one while playing for Bradford Park Avenue, while David McMullan and Elisha Scott both played for the home side. 2002 - Ex-red Mark Kennedy won his 34th and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Russia 2-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane on target. Steve Staunton, future red Steve Finnan and ex-red Jason McAteer all also played. Other reds games 1965 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Roger Hunt and Chris Lawler. 1963 – We thumped Aston Villa 4-0 in L4 with Roger Hunt and Ian St. John both scoring twice. 1960 – Dave Hickson netted as we drew 1-1 at Plymouth Argyle in a Second Division meeting 1937 – Middlesbrough won 2-0 at Anfield with Mickey Fenton bagging the first two of his nine goals against us. 1929 – We lost 3-2 to Manchester United at home with ex-red Tommy Reid scoring the first two of his four goals against us, with Harry Thomas also netting for the visitors. Gordon Hodgson was on target for the reds as Bob Done converted a penalty, with all five goals coming before the break. 1926 – We defeated Burnley 3-2 in L4, going three goals ahead through Harry Chambers and a Dick Forshaw brace before Louis Page netted the first of his seven goals against the reds. More youngsters in action 2010 – Conor Coady captained England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with France in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom also playing. 2013 – Future red Dominic Solanke featured as England Under-16’s lost 4-3 to Germany in Cologne. 2017 – Reserves keeper Vítezslav Jaroš appeared for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 5-3 in Israel. 2018 – Bobby Duncan played for England Under-17’s in their 2-0 defeat of the Netherlands in the Algarve Tournament with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Razor heads south 1989 - Neil Ruddock signed for Southampton from Millwall for £250,000. He struck thirteen times in 138 games while at The Dell before rejoining Tottenham Hotspur for £750,000 in July 1992.

Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kennedy stepped up to take the decisive spot kick, as we won the big cup right in the heart of the lions’ den. Phil Neal, Graeme Souness, in his 359th and final reds appearance, and Ian Rush had been our other successful penalty takers. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Happy birthday SteG 1980 - Skipper Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston. He made 710 appearances for the reds in total, notching 186 goals, helping us to claim the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 1915 – Len Carney was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds from Collegiate Old Boys in 1939, only netting once in six senior games after the war. 1989 – Former reserves centre-half Mikel San José was born in Pamplona, Spain. He featured on the bench once, joining Athletic de Bilbao in May 2010 after a loan spell. Kenny the boss 1985 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Player/Manager, following Joe Fagan’s resignation after the Heysel tragedy the night before. That same day, the Belgian FA announced a ban on all British clubs appearing in the country, a precursor to the wider UEFA ban on all English clubs. 2023 - Jörg Schmadtke was appointed Sporting Director, a role he only held until the following February. Shanks for the reds 1942 - Future boss Bill Shankly guested for the reds in a Wartime League game, the only time he played for us. We beat Everton 4-1 at Anfield, with Cyril Done netting a brace, and Len Carney and John Wharton also on target. Half a century for Rushie 1991 - Ian Rush won his fiftieth cap for Wales in their goalless draw with Poland in Radom, playing alongside future red Dean Saunders. He went on to win a total of 73 caps, scoring 28 times, a Welsh record. 1992 – Saunders, by now a red, played for his country again, as Wales were thumped 4-0 by the Netherlands in a friendly in Utrecht. Ray Houghton and ex-red Steve Staunton played as the Republic of Ireland lost 3-1 to the host nation in the US Cup in Washington DC on the same day. A birthday goal 2006 - Steven Gerrard struck for England on his 26th birthday in their 3-1 friendly defeat of Hungary at Old Trafford. Peter Crouch was also on target with Jamie Carragher, future red Joe Cole and ex-red Michael Owen also featuring, along with Theo Walcott, who became England’s youngest ever international, aged just seventeen years and 75 days. Future reds Javier Mascherano and Kolo Touré also played for their countries that day, while John Barnes took charge of Jamaica. In and out 2017 – Forward Dominic Solanke agreed to sign from Chelsea on 1st July, finally netting his first senior goal in his 27th and last outing as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield in May 2018, moving on to Bournemouth for £19m in January 2019. 1968 – Outside-right Dave Wilson was sold back to Preston North End. He joined the reds for £20,000 in February 1967, having played for the Lilywhites in the FA Cup Final in 1964. However, he only made one senior appearance in his fifteen months at Anfield before returning to Deepdale. Five for Albert 1948 - Albert Stubbins grabbed five goals as we thumped an American League Select side 9-2 in a friendly in the Triborough Stadium, New York City. Billy Liddell added a brace, with Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer also on the scoresheet. First and last caps 2021 – Conor Bradley came off the bench to win his first senior cap for Northern Ireland in their 3-0 friendly defeat of Malta in Austria. On the same day, Xherdan Shaqiri won his ninetieth cap as Switzerland beat the USA 2-1 in St. Gallen. 2007 – Future red Charlie Adam made his full international debut as Scotland beat Austria 1-0 in a friendly in Vienna. 1999 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a reds player as Norway beat Georgia 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Oslo. Vegard Heggem also played. On the same day, future red Frode Kippe played for Norway Under-21’s as they were held to a goalless draw by their Georgian counterparts. 1997 - Øyvind also represented his country in Oslo, as Norway beat Brazil 4-2 in a friendly. 2000 - Don Hutchison scored as he won his final cap as an Evertonian, with Scotland beating the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. The glory of Istanbul 2005 - We claimed the European Cup for the fifth time as we came from 3-0 down against the mighty AC Milan in Istanbul to triumph after a penalty shoot-out. Paolo Maldini scored before Hernan Crespo bagged a brace, with the reds having a strong penalty claim for handball turned down as well as losing Harry Kewell to injury half-way through the first period. The fans and team inspired each other in the second half as we began our comeback through skipper Steven Gerrard, whose goal was the only header of that season’s victorious European campaign. Vladimír Šmicer then struck his nineteenth reds goal in his 184th and final game for the club, before Xabi Alonso saw his penalty saved but tucked away the rebound, just six minutes after Gerrard’s goal. We hung on to the 3-3 scoreline through the rest of normal and extra time, with Jerzy Dudek making an incredible double save from Andriy Shevchenko. An amazing night was completed as we won the penalty shoot-out 3-2, with Dietmar Hamann, Djibril Cissé and Šmicer converting their spot-kicks and Dudek dancing on the goal-line. The glory that was Rome 1977 – This day brought one of only a couple of other days that can vie with Istanbul as the most glorious day in our history, as we claimed the European Cup for the first time. Rainer Bonhof hit the post for the Germans before Terry McDermott opened the scoring after half an hour, although Alan Simonsen equalised shortly after half-time, capitalising on a loose Jimmy Case back-pass. After sustaining heavy German pressure, we regained the lead when Tommy Smith rose to head in magnificently from a corner, in what was then assumed to be his final outing. Seven minutes from time, Kevin Keegan, playing in his 323rd and last reds match, was felled by Berti Vogts in the area, and Phil Neal stepped up to convert from the spot. Then the party could really start. This game remains our only other first-class game on this day in history.
