The Doc is in 1976 – Ex-Blues forward David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000. He went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies, and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Most recently 2018 – Three reds made their debuts as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 in our season opener at Anfield – keeper Alisson Becker, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, with Sadio Mané baggin

Nando off the mark 2007 - New record signing Fernando Torres struck his first reds goal in our 2-0 defeat of Shanghai Shenhua SVA SMEG in the Port of Rotterdam Tournament. Argentine winger Sebastián Leto played his first reds game in this game in De Kuip. Steven Gerrard was also on target, while the draw for the Champions League qualifiers on the same day paired us with French side Toulouse. Thommo off 2000 - David Thompson was sold to Coventry City for £3m, after five goals in 56 reds games. He stayed at Highfield Road for two years before joining Blackburn Rovers for just £1.5m, net

Midfield arrivals 2011 – Charlie Adam signed from Blackpool for an initial £6.75m. He notched twice in 35 outings, helping us to claim the Carling Cup before being sold to Stoke City for a reported £4m thirteen months later. 1984 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani was born in Rome. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back

King Kenny at Wembley 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted the only goal of the game as we triumphed over Club Brugge in our tenth game to date at Wembley, to become the first British side to retain the European Cup. The King chipped the ball over the advancing Belgian keeper shortly after the hour mark following Graeme Souness’s clever pass to him. Clinching the double 1986 - We secured the second half of the double in the first all-Merseyside FA Cup Final. We became the first team to win the FA Cup without an Englishman in the team, with Ian Rush grabbing a brace, to go with Craig Johnston’

Happy birthday Saint 1938 - Ian St. John was born in Motherwell. He joined from his hometown club in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final and also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. 1988 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi was born in Kumasi in Ghana. He appeared in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 2006 but spent most of his time out on loan.

Numero seis 2019 – We secured our sixth European Cup after defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the spot after just two minutes, with substitute Divock Origi making the game safe late on. This was the time we had played a first-class match in June in our history. In comes Brendan 2012 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed as reds boss. He had a mixed first season in charge, followed by a terrific second campaign as we came a close second in the League, before a disappointing third season. He led us to 85 victories in

Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kenne

Our first European triumph 1973 - We lost 2-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach with Jupp Heynckes getting both goals inside ten first-half minutes. However, that was enough to secure the UEFA Cup for the first time, as we had won the first leg 3-0 at Anfield two weeks before. We therefore became the first English side to claim the League title and a European trophy in the same season. Athens despair 2007 - We lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Athens thanks to a Pippo Inzaghi brace, with Bolo Zenden playing his 47th and final reds game. Dirk Kuyt headed our late consolat

UEFA Cup glory 1976 - We claimed the UEFA Cup for the second time as we drew 1-1 at Club Brugge to triumph 4-3 on aggregate. Kevin Keegan equalised just five minutes after Raoul Lambert’s penalty had put the Belgians ahead, following Tommy Smith’s handball. This result came about despite Bob Paisley being without seven first-team players for ten of the fifteen days between the preceding final League game of the season and this match, due to the British International Championships. Carra’s farewell 2013 – Jamie Carragher played his 737th and last reds game as Philippe Coutinho struck t

The youngsters claim a trophy 1996 - We won the FA Youth Cup for the first of four times to date. We beat West Ham United 2-1 at Anfield, to claim the trophy 4-1 on aggregate. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen featured for the reds. Setting records 1979 - Our 3-0 win at Leeds United was our thirtieth League victory of the season, one behind Tottenham Hotspur’s record from 1960/61. David Johnson bagged a brace either side of a Jimmy Case strike in a game originally postponed from two months earlier. We therefore ended the League season having only conceded sixteen goals in all, a record

Unhappy hat-tricks 1961 - Winger Kevin Lewis scored a treble in our Second Division fixture at Bristol Rovers, but we still went down 4-3. Bobby Jones bagged a brace as Peter Hooper netted the last of his seven goals against us, with Harold Jarman also on target. 1908 - Joe Bache scored a hat-trick for Aston Villa in their 5-1 top-flight victory over us at Villa Park, three of his nine strikes against the reds, with our goal coming from inside-left Ronald Orr on his reds debut. Harry Hampton netted two of his fifteen goals past us. 1931 - Jimmy Dunne bagged all four goals for Sheffield U
