Michael’s European record 2002 - Michael Owen scored his fifteenth away goal in Europe, which remains a club record, as we beat Vitesse Arnhem 1-0 at their Gelredome in the Third Round of the UEFA Cup. Surprisingly, this was our first game in the Netherlands on a club ground, and our first win in the country. Beating the Gunners 2004 - Neil Mellor grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner as we beat Arsenal 2-1, his first League strike. Xabi Alonso had opened the scoring with his first Anfield goal before Patrick Vieira rounded off a slick Arsenal move to equalise. Antonio Núñez came on as

Mickey’s treble 1997 - Michael Owen scored his first reds hat-trick as we beat Grimsby Town 3-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Fourth Round tie. Oggy signs on 1977 - Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances. Derby despair 1995 - Robbie Fowler netted our consolation very late on as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton throug

Chico’s first 1983 – Steve Nicol grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club

The Doc is in 1976 – Ex-Blues forward David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000. He went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies, and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Most recently 2018 – Three reds made their debuts as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 in our season opener at Anfield – keeper Alisson Becker, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, with Sadio Mané baggin

Fijne Verjaardag 1991 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk was born in Breda. He arrived from Southampton for a club record £75m in January 2018, a world record fee for a defender. He has so far netted eleven goals in 117 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Uncle Joe’s first capture 1983 - Gary Gillespie signed from Coventry City for £325,000, becoming Joe Fagan’s first signing. His eight years at Anfield were blighted by injury, but he won three League title medals, and scored sixteen times in his 214 appearan

Arrivederci JAR 2008 - John Arne Riise was sold to Roma for £4m after 348 reds appearances and 31 goals since his arrival for the same fee from AS Monaco in June 2001. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston signed from Mansfield Town for £300,000 after an amazing 81 goals in seventy Third Division North outings. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kenne

Wembley glory for the 96 1989 - We clinched the FA Cup for the fourth time, in an all-Merseyside final, five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster that claimed 96 lives. John Aldridge, who was playing his hundredth reds game, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strike that was named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, the only time the same player has claimed the award in consecutive seasons. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final t

An Anfield farewell 1996 - Ian Rush played his final reds game at Anfield, with Stan Collymore scoring the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough. He was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour’ from both teams. Heading to Istanbul 2005 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final. The evening was only slightly spoiled by Xabi Alonso’s unwarranted booking that would rule him out of the Anfield return. Steven Gerrard had an emergency dental operation on the morning of the game.
