We had had an injury-time penalty award overruled by VAR. Macca’s farewell and hello 1991 - Steve McMahon played his 277th and final reds game as we drew 2-2 at home with Manchester City, whom he was shortly to join, as was widely known at the time. Dean Saunders and Steve Nicol scored our goals, with David White netting two of his five goals past us, having already also bagged a brace in the reverse fixture earlier that season. Luis yet again 2013 – Skipper Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 at Anfield to go top of the table, becoming the first player to score ten Premier League goals in a calendar month, beating Mark Viduka’s record for Leeds United of eight in April 2003, and the first player to score at least two goals in four Premier League games in a row. Suárez bagged a brace with Raheem Sterling also on target in the first half. Getting shuttered of Titi 2000 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was sold to West Ham United for £2.2m. He had bagged ten goals in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999. 2002 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan joined Darlington on loan from Preston North End, only playing twice before getting injured. Births and death 1927 - Centre-forward Jack Smith was born in Birkenhead. He netted fourteen times in 59 reds games after signing from Bromborough Pool in March 1951. He moved on to Torquay United in May 1954. 1877 - Winger Jack Cox was born in Everton. He signed from Blackpool for £150 in December 1897 and struck eighty times in 361 reds games, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship before returning to Bloomfield Road as Player/Manager in May 1909. 1878 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle was born in Cadder, East Dunbartonshire. He signed from Clyde in May 1899, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse a year later. 1984 - Irish midfielder Darren Potter was born in Liverpool. A former Liverpool schoolboys’ captain who was once with Everton, he used to attend Alsop High School, where Gérard Houllier once taught. He made seventeen senior appearances under Rafael Benítez, but moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2007 after a successful loan spell. 1948 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl died. He signed from Middlesbrough in January 1914, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He had featured in our FA Cup Final defeat to Burnley in April 1914. Tons up 2018 – Jordan Henderson played his 300th reds game as we won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. 1963 – Ian St. John struck his fiftieth reds goal as he reached a century of League appearance in our 1-0 win at Blackpool. A goalscoring debut 1957 - Outside-right Tony McNamara scored on his reds bow as we beat Bristol City 4-3 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. Tony Rowley bagged a brace, with Alan A’Court also on target. Johnny Watkins netted one of his four goals against the reds, with Tommy Burden and Dermot Curtis also on the scoresheet. The mighty Finn 1999 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the first time, succeeding future clubmate Jari Litmanen who had won for seven straight years. Future reds reserve Daniel Sjölund was named their Youth Player of the Year on the same day. Facing the Gunners 2014 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Arsenal. Mathieu Debuchy equalised seconds after Philippe Coutinho had given us the lead on the stroke of half-time. Olivier Giroud put the visitors in front with one of his eight strikes past us to date, but Martin Škrtel headed in deep into stoppage time to secure a point, shortly after Fabio Borini had stupidly been sent off after a second booking. 2008 – We drew 1-1 at Arsenal, with Robbie Keane grabbing a spectacular equaliser after Robin van Persie had given the home side the lead with the first of his seven strikes against the reds. Emmanuel Adebayor was sent off for the Gunners but we could not convert our numerical superiority into victory. We were wearing a curious kit combining silver shirts with red shorts and socks. 1929 - We beat the Gunners 1-0 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield, with inside-left Archie McPherson grabbing his first reds goal. Also recently 2022 – We lost a League Cup Fourth Round tie 3-2 at Manchester City. Erling Haaland opened the scoring before Fábio Carvalho equalised. Riyad Mahrez put the home side back in front but Mohamed Salah levelled inside a minute. However, Nathan Aké nodded in the winner. 2012 – Raheem Sterling signed a new contract with the reds, having already made 28 senior appearances at that point. On the same day, José Enrique became a father for the first time. 2011 - Charlie Adam had a penalty saved as we were held to a goalless draw at Wigan Athletic, the fourth red to suffer that fate this season. Friday night live 1984 - John Wark and Ian Rush struck as we won 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers in front of the live TV cameras on a Friday night, to keep us in touch with the First Division leaders. Thumping the Villains 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged a brace with Albert Stubbins and Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet as we beat Aston Villa 4-1 at Anfield in a top-flight meeting. Balmer was actually netting in his seventh consecutive game, in which time he had struck fifteen times in total. Former hero of both sides of Stanley Park, Fred Geary, presented the visiting side with the match ball from the 1897 FA Cup Final before the game as this had been taken home by the defeated Everton side on the day. Dickie Dorsett bagged one of his four goals against the reds. Clem in action 1974 - We lost 3-1 at Birmingham City, with Ray Clemence saving a penalty from Alan Campbell. Gordon Taylor then put the home side in front with the last of his four strikes past us before John Toshack equalised. Howard Kendall converted a spot-kick before Bob Hatton headed in one of his four goals against the reds. Management moves 2015 – Former reds First Team Coach Kevin Keen was appointed Manager of Colchester United. He left by mutual consent the following April after they were relegated to League Two. 2008 – Gary McAllister was sacked as Manager of Leeds United. He had led them into the League One Play-off Final earlier that year. 1983 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Second Division Swansea City for the second time. However, he could only lead them to two victories in eleven games in charge this time around. Quasi on target 1985 - Peter Beardsley scored for Newcastle United as they held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. One of the linesmen was called Mr. Everton! Steve Nicol grabbed our goal. Other reds games 1968 – Emlyn Hughes netted the only goal of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Anfield. 1935 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in L4, with Vic Wright on the scoresheet. 1912 – We drew 2-2 with Sheffield United in L4. Jack Parkinson and Arthur Metcalf scored, with Billy Gillespie scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Bob Benson converting a penalty. 1907 – We lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough with Jack Parkinson on target. Steve Bloomer netted two of his fourteen goals past us, with Freddie Wilcox also on target. 1895 – George Allan bagged the only goal of our Second Division fixture at Lincoln City. Mixed fortunes in Arabia 1997 - Future red Harry Kewell was on the wrong end of a 6-0 thumping as Australia lost to Brazil in the Final of the Confederations Cup in Saudi Arabia. On the same day, future red Vladimír Šmicer played as the Czech Republic beat Uruguay 1-0 in the Third-place play-off. Also in international action 1996 – Future red Brad Friedel played as the USA drew a World Cup qualifier 2-2 with Guatemala in El Salvador. 2003 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the United Arab Emirates for their 2-2 friendly draw with Kenya in Abu Dhabi. 2015 - Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan both played for England Under-15’s as they drew 3-3 with Turkey at St. George’s Park. -
In comes Razor 1987 - Ray Houghton signed from Oxford United for £825,000. He went on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield in his five years at Anfield. He was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992, as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. More ins and out 1894 - Centre-forward Hugh Henderson joined the reds from Third Lanark. He only made two appearances for the reds, both convincing defeats. 1962 – Scottish left-half Willie Stevenson signed from Rangers for £20,000. He missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. 1946 – Scottish left-winger George Paterson was sold to Swindon Town for their record fee, having struck once in three outings since arriving from the Hall Russell’s works team in May 1937. European Cup adventures We have lost just one of our five European games on this day in history, progressing to the next stage on each occasion. 1966 – We beat Romanians Petrolul Ploieşti 2-0 in a Preliminary Round replay in Brussels, when Ian St. John and Peter Thompson netted to take us through. 2004 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña in the group stages of our glorious Champions League campaign. 2005 - Djibril Cissé grabbed the only goal of the game as we won at Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht in another group game. 1977 - Jimmy Case netted twice with Alan Hansen scoring his first reds goal as we started the defence of our crown by thumping Dynamo Dresden 5-1 at Anfield. Phil Neal converted a penalty, with Ray Kennedy also on target. 1982 - We had two goals disallowed for offside as we lost 1-0 at HJK Helsinki in the first leg of our Second Round tie, although we went on to win the return 5-0. 1983 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Athletic Bilbao at the same stage, although we won in Spain. On target again 2021 – Mohamed Salah scored in a club record ninth consecutive game, netting twice, including once from the spot, to become our top ever goalscorer in the European Cup. Roberto Firmino played his 300th game for the club as we won our UEFA Champions League group encounter 3-2 at Club Atlético de Madrid, with Antoine Griezmann sent off for the home side, having already bagged a brace, with Naby Keïta also on target. 2014 – We scored in a club record eighteenth consecutive top-flight away game, eventually winning a topsy-turvy game 3-2 at Queens Park Rangers, despite the score being just 1-0 with three minutes of normal time remaining. We went ahead after Richard Dunne put through his own net before Leroy Fer twice struck the crossbar for the home side. Eduardo Vargas equalised before Philippe Coutinho put us back in front on ninety minutes. Vargas’s header was deflected in off Steven Gerrard in stoppage time, but future red Steven Caulker then diverted Raheem Sterling’s cross into his own net to hand us all three points. 1974 – We won 1-0 at Loftus Road with Brian Hall on the scoresheet early on as full-back Chris Lawler played his 400th League game for the reds. First strikes 1985 - Craig Johnston’s goal at Old Trafford was the first that Manchester United had conceded at home that season, as we drew 1-1 with Paul McGrath on target for the home side. 2002 - Salif Diao scored his first League goal to give us a 1-0 win at Leeds United, in Gérard Houllier’s 150th League match in sole charge, which took us to the top of the table. 1912 - Centre-half Bob Ferguson scored his first reds goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1 at Anfield. Arthur Metcalf netted a brace, with Arthur Goddard slotting home a penalty while Walter Aitkenhead bagged one of his four goals past us. Stevie’s century 2013 - Steven Gerrard scored his hundredth League goal as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United, with Luis Suárez reaching a century of reds games. Yohan Cabaye opened the scoring for the home side from long range, with Gerrard equalising from the spot as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off for a foul on Suárez. Paul Dummett volleyed in after the break, with Daniel Sturridge also on target. Most recently 2022 - Darwin Núñez headed in his first Anfield goal in the first half, which was enough to secure victory over West Ham United at Anfield, with Alisson Becker later saving a Jarrod Bowen spot-kick. Jack born 1928 - Centre-half Jack Heydon was born in Birkenhead. He made 67 appearances at right- and centre-back after signing on a free transfer from Everton in January 1949, where he had been an amateur. He stayed at Anfield until May 1953 when he joined Millwall, but later returned to Merseyside to play for Tranmere Rovers. 1932 – Right-back Don Campbell was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in November 1950, netting twice in 48 games before moving on to Crewe Alexandra in July 1958. 1983 – Keeper Andy Lonergan was born in Preston. Ray Minshull made his reds bow in goal in the absence of both Cyril Sidlow and Charlie Ashcroft. Right-half Phil Taylor reached a century of League outings for the reds. Up against the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers on this day in history. 1935 - Our top-flight trip to Burnden Park ended goalless. 1918 - We won a Wartime League fixture at home 6-1, with Thomas Green netting twice and John Bamber, Arthur Metcalf, Harry Lewis and Harold Wadsworth all on target. Into the Hall of Fame 2006 - Alan Hansen, Roger Hunt and Ian Rush were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. They joined Bill Shankly, Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Kevin Keegan and Bob Paisley on the list of legends, with Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness among those subsequently being included. 2016 – Mark Lawrenson and Billy Liddell both joined the trio in the Hall of Fame. Irish firsts 1988 - John Aldridge scored his first full international goal on his twentieth appearance, as the Republic of Ireland beat Tunisia 4-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. In fact, this was his only Irish goal as a reds player. Steve Staunton made his first appearance in the same game, with ex-red Ken DeMange claiming his second and final cap and Ray Houghton also featuring. Ex-red Kevin Sheedy was also on the scoresheet. John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Steve Nicol and future red Glenn Hysén all featured in World Cup qualifiers that day. Double debutants 1946 - Ray Lambert and Cyril Sidlow both made their senior debuts for Wales as Scotland beat them 3-1 in the British International Championships at the Racecourse Ground. Billy Liddell won his second cap for the winning side. Final caps 2021 – Josh Davison played his fifth and final game for England Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Belarus. 1994 - Brad Friedel won his last cap as a UCLA player, his 27th in total, as the USA lost 2-1 in a friendly in Saudi Arabia. 1988 - Dean Saunders scored from the spot while winning his final cap as an Oxford United player in Wales’ 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw with Finland in Swansea. Ian Rush also played, while future reds Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe won his first cap as a Sunderland player, with István Kozma also in action. 1986 - Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his fourth and last Under-16’s cap for Norway in their 3-2 win in Denmark. 1957 – Future reds centre-forward Des Palmer won his third and last cap for Wales as they were thumped 4-0 by England in the British International Championships at Ninian Park. Elisha twice Keeper Elisha Scott twice represented Northern Ireland in Belfast against England in the British International Championships on this day in history. 1929 - He played in a 3-0 loss, up against future reds defender Ernie Blenkinsop. 1935 - He featured in a 3-1 defeat, by which time he was a Belfast Celtic player. From back to front 1957 - Keeper Tommy Younger went off injured just before half time but returned as a centre-forward as we lost 2-1 at Derby County. Ronnie Moran took over in goal with the score at 1-0 with Billy Liddell slotting in at left-back. Tony Rowley struck our equaliser, but Moran finally conceded with seven minutes left. Dennis Woodhead netted the last of his four goals against us, with George Darwin also scoring. 1929 - We also visited the Baseball Ground when Jim Smith and Gordon Hodgson struck in our 2-2 First Division draw. Peter Ramage bagged the first of his five goals past the reds, with Harry Bedford grabbing one of his nine. Rewarded 2012 – Young Spanish midfielder Suso signed a new contract, having been a pro at Anfield since November 2010. He notched once in 21 senior outings, moving on to AC Milan in January 2015. Nominated 2008 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both named on a short-list for the Ballon d’Or by France Football magazine. The trophy was eventually claimed by Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, with Torres finishing in third and Gerrard in tenth. North of the border 1987 - The reds took part in a testimonial match for Dundee’s George McGeachie, winning 4-0. The goals came from a John Barnes brace, Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton, who was playing his first reds game. Jan the Man at Aggborough again 2003 - Jan Mølby returned to Kidderminster Harriers as Director of Football. He remained in the role for a year before resigning due to poor results. Also on the move 2015 – Ex-reds First Team Coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the first time, after fifteen months in charge. 2001 - Jason McAteer joined Sunderland from Blackburn Rovers for £1m. He bagged five goals in 61 appearances for the Black Cats, before moving on to Tranmere Rovers in July 2004. 2000 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe was released by basement side Southend United after just six appearances. 1994 - Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Stoke City from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £300,000. He had netted nine times in 54 outings for Wolves. Happy birthday Ronnie 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. 2005 – Midfielder Michael Laffey was born in Liverpool. He arrived from Everton as an Under-10, signing professional terms in December 2022. Lawler’s night 1978 - A testimonial match for full-back Chris Lawler was staged with the reds defeating Swansea City 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to a Kenny Dalglish brace and a strike by Graeme Souness, with Welsh rugby union star Gareth Edwards featuring for the Swans. Managing Director Ian Ayre, then aged just fourteen, took a penalty at half-time, having won a competition. Lawler made 549 appearances in sixteen years at Anfield, scoring 61 times, and helping us to two League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. A treble for Tosh 1975 - John Toshack scored a hat-trick as we beat Birmingham City 3-1 at Anfield, while Bob Hatton struck the last of his four goals past us. Fifty for Terry 1980 – Terry McDermott’s penalty was his fiftieth reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Ipswich Town, with Frans Thijssen netting for the visitors. Double debut 1902 - Right-back Don McCallum played the first of his two reds games as we won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with Sam Raybould bagging a brace and keeper Peter Platt also debuting. Mixed fortunes against the Blues 1919 - Chelsea completed the first half of their first ever League double over us, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Heading south 1956 – Centre-half Alex South left the reds to join Halifax Town, for whom he racked up over three hundred games. He had arrived from his hometown club Brighton & Hove Albion for a £5,000 fee, joining his old boss Don Welsh at Anfield. He struck once in just seven reds appearances. Aldo for Ireland 1995 - Ex-red John Aldridge struck his final two goals for the Republic of Ireland, including a penalty, as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro ’96 qualifier at Lansdowne Road. That took his tally to eight goals in four games against the men from the Baltic. Jason McAteer won his first cap as a reds player, with Phil Babb, Mark Kennedy and ex-red Steve Staunton also playing. Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal and future reds Nick Barmby, Stéphane Henchoz and Øyvind Leonhardsen all also featured in internationals that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland. 1989 - Aldo won his first cap as a Real Sociedad player in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland at the same venue. This was their first ever win over their near neighbours, at the fourth attempt. Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan both netted, while Steve Staunton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy also featured. Leighton Clarkson, Curtis Jones and ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward, Gini Wijnaldum and Harry Wilson also played for their countries. 2017 – Rhian Brewster netted as England Under-17’s beat Mexico 3-2 in the World Championship Finals in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both featured as Brazil beat Chile 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier on the same day. Meanwhile, ex-red Luis Suárez bagged a brace as Uruguay beat Bolivia 4-2 in Montevideo. 2016 – Ex-red Luis Suárez netted as Uruguay were held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia in a World Cup qualifier, with Sebastián Coates also playing. Philippe Coutinho, Marko Grujić, Jordan Henderson, Caoimhín Kelleher, Daniel Sturridge, Harry Wilson, future reds Alisson Becker and Diogo Jota and ex-reds Martin Škrtel and Brad Smith all also featured for their countries. 2013 – Daniel Sturridge earned and then converted a penalty as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Montenegro 4-1 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with Steven Gerrard captaining the side and future red James Milner also in action. Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. He netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. 1988 - Jimmy Ryan was born in Maghull. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad. 1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. Midfield arrivals 2011 – Charlie Adam signed from Blackpool for an initial £6.75m. He notched twice in 35 outings, helping us to claim the Carling Cup before being sold to Stoke City for a reported £4m thirteen months later. 1984 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani was born in Rome. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back in his native land, with Juventus and AC Milan. Champions 2019 – Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, future red Arthur Melo and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured as Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in the Copa América Final in Rio de Janeiro to become South American champions for the ninth time. Mixed semi-final fortunes 2021 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling played as England beat Denmark 2-1 at Wembley to reach the European Championships Final after extra time, although they went on to lose the Final to Italy on penalties. 2010 – Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso both featured as Spain beat Germany 1-0 in Durban to reach the World Cup Final. 1998 - Future red Bolo Zenden played as the Netherlands lost a penalty shoot-out 4-2 to Brazil in the World Cup Semi-final in Marseille after the match had ended 1-1. 2011 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 3-2 to host nation Mexico in the World Championships Semi-final. On the same day, future red Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt Under-20’s drew a friendly 2-2 in Portugal. 2016 – Can played for the senior side as Germany lost 2-0 to France in the European Championships Semi-final in Marseille. Ince out 1999 - It was announced that Paul Ince would be leaving the club. Gérard Houllier said, “I have told him he is not in my plans for Liverpool. He should look elsewhere now.” He joined Middlesbrough for £1m three weeks later. He had struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield. Ending up fourth 1990 - Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England lost 2-1 to Italy in the World Cup third place play-off in Bari. Debuts galore 2018 – Rafa Camacho, Fabinho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keïta and Nat Phillips all made their reds bows as we thumped Chester 7-0 at their Swansway Chester Stadium in our opening pre-season friendly. Winger Harry Wilson bagged his first two goals for the club as we led 2-0 at half time. James Milner converted a penalty before Daniel Sturridge bagged a brace, with Ryan Kent netting his first for the reds and Danny Ings also on target. Besian’s treble 2007 - Besian Idrizaj scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we took a three-goal half-time lead in our opening pre-season friendly at Wrexham before eventually winning 3-2. Jordy Brouwer, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Martin Hansen, Ronald Huth, Krisztián Németh, András Simon and Jay Spearing all played their first reds games that day. In and out 2008 – Sarajevo-born forward Nikola Sarić signed for the reds from Herfølge Boldklub in Denmark. He had recently been named as Under-17’s Player of the Year by the Danish Football Association. He failed to break through to the first team and moved on to HNK Hajduk Split in June 2011. 2015 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo had his loan from Club Atlético de Madrid terminated. He had made nineteen senior appearances. Emile on the move again 2006 - Emile Heskey joined Wigan Athletic from Birmingham City for £5.5m. He struck sixteen times in 88 games for the Latics before moving to Aston Villa for £3.5m in January 2009. Ray on the way up 1982 - Ray Houghton signed for Fulham from West Ham United on a free transfer, five years prior to his arrival at Anfield. He netted 21 times in 145 appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Oxford United. Also on the move 2000 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell joined Stockport County on loan. He scored twice in 23 appearances for them before joining Cardiff City on a free transfer a year later. His only reds appearance had come in a Worthington Cup tie against Hull City in September 1999, when he scored in front of the Kop. 2004 - Dominic Matteo joined Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Nick Barmby also moved for free, joining Hull City from Leeds United. Matteo played just 39 times for Rovers before joining Stoke City in January 2007, while Barmby turned out on 197 occasions for his hometown club, netting 32 times, as well as taking over as Manager for five months. 1993 – Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from West Ham United for £600,000, having bagged thirty goals in 279 outings for the Hammers. 2008 – Ex-reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined Colchester United from Cheltenham Town for £400,000. On the same day, Tom Ince joined Hull City, netting once in thirteen outings before moving on to Derby County for £4.75m a year later. 2016 – Keeper Brad Jones signed for Feyenoord, helping them to clinch the League title in his first campaign, their first in eighteen years. 2017 – Right-back Stephen Darby joined Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer from Bradford City, after one goal in 239 games for the Bantams. Reaching the semi 2018 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling helped England to beat Sweden 2-0 in Samara, with Dejan Lovren on the winning side as Croatia set up a Semi-final meeting with England, seeing off host nation on penalties after their meeting in Sochi ended 2-2. Getting hitched 1983 - Bruce Grobbelaar married Debbie in Zimbabwe. In typical Brucie fashion, both the happy couple wore tracksuits! 2004 - Danny Murphy wed Joanna Taylor in Barbados, one month prior to his departure from Anfield 2006 - On a sadder note, former player, Coach and Manager Phil Taylor’s wife Maisey died. Larry in charge 1983 - Ex-reds centre-half Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of Notts County. He was only in charge for fifteen months before he was sacked. They were relegated after three years in the top flight in his only full season in charge. Signing on 2005 - Dietmar Hamann signed a new contract for up to two years, depending on the number of appearances he made in the coming season. He moved on in July 2006 after 283 first-team appearances, in which he acted as a sturdy bulwark in front of the defence, scoring just eleven times. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. 2011 – Reserves centre-half Andre Wisdom signed a new contract until 2014, subsequently extended further. He scored once in 22 senior games after making his debut in September 2012, moving on to Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 2021 – Forward Oakley Cannonier signed as a professional, having joined from his hometown club Leeds United as an Under-12. He struck 41 times in all competitions in the 2021/22 season. 2022 – Defender Joe Gomez signed a new contract, having failed to score in 142 senior games to that point. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m in June 2015, so far helping us to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. On the same day, Jordan Henderson was presented with his MBE at Buckingham Palace by Prince William Duke of Cambridge. Knocked out 2007 - Mark González won his twentieth cap as Chile were thumped 6-1 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in the Quarter-final of the Copa América in Venezuela. On the same day, future red Luis Suárez played as Uruguay Under-20’s lost 2-0 to Zambia in their World Championship Finals group game in Canada, although they still qualified for the knock-out phase. Completing another treble 2001 - We clinched the third leg of our cup treble, beating Deportivo Alavés 5-4 after a pulsating match in Dortmund. Markus Babbel and Steven Gerrard put us 2-0 up after a quarter of an hour, with the German grabbing his sixth and final reds goal. Ivan Alonso pulled one back before a Gary McAllister penalty restored our two-goal cushion before half-time. After the break, two goals from Javi Moreno levelled the match, before Robbie Fowler scored his fiftieth cup goal to regain the lead. Jordi Cruyff sent the Final into extra-time, before a golden own-goal from Delfi Geli, from a Gary Mac free-kick, finally won us the UEFA Cup for the third time. Ali on target 2021 – Alisson Becker headed in a stoppage-time winner at West Bromwich Albion to become the first goalkeeper to ever score for the reds as Roberto Firmino skippered the side for the first time. Hal Robson-Kanu gave the Baggies an early lead with Mohamed Salah equalising before half time. Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to make his 63rd and last reds appearance as we won 2-1. Anfield testimonials for reds legends 2000 – The reds beat Celtic 4-1 in a testimonial for Ronnie Moran. He had struck seventeen times in 379 games for us before joining the coaching staff. The game was also special in that Erik Meijer grabbed a rare brace, with the other goals coming from Titi Camara and David Thompson. 1988 - The reds beat an England XI 3-2 to win the Fosters Challenge Cup, in a testimonial match for Alan Hansen at Anfield. Mick Harford’s header put England in front, before Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush put the reds ahead. Chris Waddle equalised and then Rush added his second. Long before the end the Kop were chanting “Ian Rush come back home”, a wish that was granted just three months later. Farewell to heroes 1959 - Elisha Scott died. He had played 468 games in goal across his 21 years with us, winning two League championship medals in his time at Anfield. 2012 – Kenny Dalglish was sacked as Manager, despite having won the League Cup and reached the FA Cup Final in his one full season back in charge. He had previously spent many years working with Barcelona’s youth players. 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou signed from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m, although he had to wait two months for his international clearance. He struck five times in 48 reds games before joining Stade Rennais in June 2006 after two previous loan spells back in his native land. International recognition 1931 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall made his Scotland debut at centre-half as they lost 5-0 to Austria in a friendly in Vienna. Meanwhile, future reds defender Ernie Blenkinsop featured in England’s 4-1 friendly win in Belgium. 1934 - Ex-reds defender Tom Gardner won the first of his two England caps as they lost 2-1 to Czechoslovakia in a friendly in Prague. Debutants galore 1975 - Jimmy Case made his reds bow in our 3-1 home League win over Queens Park Rangers, when John Toshack netted a brace to add to a Kevin Keegan penalty, with Gerry Francis on target for the visitors. This was our final game of the season, as we ended up in second place behind Derby County. 1965 - Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. John Sealey scored in his only reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target as we won 3-1. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper Billy Molyneux also played their only senior reds games, while left-back Phil Ferns made his 28th and last appearance for the club and inside-left Gordon Wallace played for the 22nd and final time. 1947 - Winger Billy Watkinson scored on his Liverpool debut as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, with Willie Fagan nabbing the other. 1992 - Sami Hyypiä played his first game in the Finnish Premier League, as Myllykosken Pallo-47 won 2-0 at Jazz. 2008 - Jonjo Shelvey became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 59 days. He played the full ninety minutes in their 3-0 Championship defeat at Barnsley. Ton up for Mo 2019 – Mohamed Salah played his hundredth reds game as we thumped Huddersfield Town 5-0 at Anfield, reaching a club record 69 goals in an opening century of outings. Naby Keïta scored our fastest ever Premiership goal after just fourteen seconds, with Sadio Mané and Salah each bagging a brace. 1924 – Full-back Tommy Lucas and right-half Jock McNab both reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Notts County at Anfield, with Dick Forshaw netting the only goal of the game. Youngsters win again 2007 - We retained the FA Youth Cup, to claim it for the third time. Centre-back Robbie Threlfall, who had scored an own goal in the first leg, bagged the only goal of the game at Old Trafford, to wipe out Manchester United’s 2-1 first leg victory. We went on to secure the trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3, with keeper David Roberts saving one of United’s spot-kicks. Red endings 2008 - Peter Crouch grabbed his 42nd and final reds goal as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City. We had fallen two goals behind to Mikael Forssell and Sebastian Larsson strikes before Crouch and then Yossi Benayoun netted to ensure we qualified for the next season’s Champions League. 1952 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh played his eleventh and last reds game as we ended the season with a 4-0 top-flight thumping at Preston North End, with defender George Whitworth appearing for the ninth and final time. The legendary Tom Finney scored one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Wayman bagging two of his six against us and Angus Morrison netting one of his four. 1902 – Right-back Tom Robertson played his 47th and last reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Walter Whittaker struck one of his six goals against the reds. Johnny Walker scored in his 120th and final reds fame with Sam Raybould having a penalty saved. Hammerings 2023 – We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium, despite falling behind to Lucas Paquetá’s strike. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Michael’s fourth goal, our fifth, was our 700th in the Premiership. Milan Baroš added a brace. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He went on to play nearly a hundred times for the Pirates, netting fourteen times. 1941 - We also entertained United, with Cyril Done and Billy Liddell on target in a 2-1 Wartime League victory. A double for Quasi 1989 - Peter Beardsley played his first competitive game following the Hillsborough disaster, bagging a brace as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle netted in West Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Feyenoord. The two players would meet in the World Cup Semi-final the following year. The start of another treble 2001 - We won the Worthington Cup in the first domestic final to be played outside England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. We beat Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 to secure Gérard Houllier's first trophy. Who could forget witnessing Jamie Carragher striding forward to bury our fifth spot-kick, before Sander Westerveld saved the decisive penalty from future Blue Andrew Johnson? Robbie Fowler had opened the scoring, before a late Darren Purse penalty took the game into extra time. On our way to Wembley 1987 - We made it through to the Littlewoods Challenge Cup Final, as the League Cup was then known, by beating Southampton 3-0 in the Semi-final second leg at Anfield. Steven Gerrard completed the scoring with his 33rd goal in continental competition to surpass Alan Shearer as Britain’s all-time leading scorer in European football. 2016 – James Milner’s early penalty was enough to secure victory over Augsburg 1907 e. V. in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie, as we went all the way to the Final in Basel that season. Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira played his eighth and last reds game. Naby’s farewell 2023 – Midfielder Naby Keïta made his 129th and last appearance for the club as we were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and later took charge at Anfield for 232 games over five years during the 1950’s. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. 1967 – Former First Team Coach Kevin Keen was born in Amersham. He was appointed in July 2011, joining from West Ham United before moving on in June 2012. Other reds birthdays 1993 – Reserves centre-half and skipper Conor Coady was born in Liverpool. He made just two senior appearances before being sold to Huddersfield Town for £375,000 in August 2014. 1952 - John McLaughlin was born in Liverpool. The midfielder only made 55 appearances in his six years at Anfield, after signing professional terms on his seventeenth birthday, bagging three goals. His best season came in 1970/71, but a lack of first-team opportunities following injury led to a loan move to Portsmouth during 1975/76 before he moved into non-League football with Barrow. 1925 - Forward Sammy Smyth was born in Belfast. He bagged twenty goals in 44 reds games after signing from Stoke City for £12,000 in December 1952. He returned to his homeland to sign for Bangor City in January 1955. Anfield trebles 1922 - Dick Forshaw netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 League defeat of Arsenal, with his last goal coming in injury time. He sat on the bench three times before returning to Gresty Road. 1950 - Defender George Whitworth signed for the reds from Stanton Ironworks. Jerzy’s Polish bow 1998 - Feyenoord’s Jerzy Dudek made his full international debut for Poland as a substitute in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Israel in Tel-Aviv. Reds on target for their countries 1998 - Vegard Heggem bagged his only Norway goal while winning his first cap, and only one as a Rosenborg BK player, as they drew 3-3 with France in a friendly in Marseille. Future clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played, while Auxerre’s Bernard Diomède played for the French. 1981 - Kenny Dalglish netted the only goal of Scotland’s World Cup qualifier in Israel, who included Avi Cohen. Graeme Souness and future red John Wark both also played. 2011 – Future red Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s beat England 3-1 in the Algarve Tournament. Shanks in charge 1959 - Bill Shankly took over as Manager, thirteen days after his appointment was announced. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club, but his honours as reds boss included three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. Happy birthdays 1979 - Michael Owen was born in Chester. He struck 158 times in 297 games for us, moving on to Real Madrid in August 2004 for £8m after seven years’ great service to the reds, having helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. 1963 – Former Managing Director Christian Purslow was born in Cardiff. He was appointed in June 2009 to replace Rick Parry. He stood down in October 2010 after the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. He is now Chief Executive of Aston Villa. In comes a striking legend 1925 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson signed from Transvaal. He bagged a club record eighteen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games, but was unable to claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa for £3,000 in January 1936. 1908 – Keeper Augustus Beeby joined the reds, but only made sixteen senior appearances before leaving for Manchester City in May 1911. Red farewells 2020 - Gérard Houllier died. He was appointed as joint Manager alongside Roy Evans in July 1998, taking over sole charge four months later. He led us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before leaving by mutual consent in May 2004. He then went on to lead Olympique Lyonnais to two straight League titles, as well as having a spell in charge of Aston Villa. 2009 – Left-winger Alan A’Court died. He signed for free from Prescot Cables in September 1952 and scored 63 times in 381 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1962, as well as representing England at the 1958 World Cup in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in October 1964. God hits four for his century 1996 - Robbie Fowler scored four goals in our 5-1 thrashing of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with the opener coming after just 29 seconds and the second being his hundredth reds goal. He reached this milestone in 165 games, one faster than Ian Rush, and celebrated one of his goals by revealing a t-shirt with the hand-written slogan “God’s job’s a good un” on it! For the record, Stig Inge Bjørnebye netted our other goal, his fourth and final one for the club, with Michael Thomas putting through his own net. The start of a record run 1974 - Phil Neal made the first of 365 consecutive League appearances, a club record, as we beat Luton Town 2-0 at Anfield. John Toshack scored his fiftieth reds goal with Steve Heighway also on target. Mo, mo, mo 2019 – Mohamed Salah struck in his third consecutive reds game as we beat Watford 2-0 at Anfield, with the Egyptian on target twice. 2016 – Divock Origi scored in his fifth consecutive reds game as we won 3-0 at Middlesbrough, with Adam Lallana nabbing a brace, Spot-kick misery in London 1993 - We were knocked out of the League Cup by Wimbledon in a Fourth Round replay at Selhurst Park. We benefited from a Hans Segers own goal in the final minute as the game ended 2-2 with Neil Ruddock also scoring, Dean Holdsworth netting the first of his four strikes against the reds, and Robbie Earle bagging one of his five past us. John Barnes then had a penalty saved in extra time. Unfortunately, we lost the shoot-out 4-3, with both Jamie Redknapp and Mark Walters failing from the spot. We also suffered because Jan Mølby ripped a calf muscle in this game. A European draw 1966 - We came from behind twice as we were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Ajax in the European Cup, with ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt and the legendary Johan Cruyff scoring twice each, as we crashed out at the Second Round stage 7-3 on aggregate. Peter Thompson and Geoff Strong had both hit the woodwork before the scoring began. This was the first time we had ever played in a yellow kit. Red milestones 2014 – Raheem Sterling reached a century of games for the reds as we lost 3-0 at Manchester United, with keeper Simon Mignolet dropped in favour of Brad Jones after 93 consecutive Premier League starts, following recent errors. Wayne Rooney scored one of his seven goals past us, with Juan Mata also on target before the break. Aldo off 1989 - John Aldridge left for Real Sociedad for £1.1m after 63 goals in 104 reds games, to become their first non-Basque player. He was signed by ex-red John Toshack and struck 33 times in 63 games in two years before returning to Merseyside with Tranmere Rovers. Beating the Mancs 2008 – Albert Riera made his reds bow as we came from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield. Carlos Tévez opened the scoring for the visitors after just three minutes, with one of his four goals past us to date, with a Wes Brown own goal drawing us level before half an hour had elapsed. This was the 400th goal we had scored under Rafael Benítez. Substitute Ryan Babel handed us victory before Nemanja Vidić was sent off in stoppage time, a fate that was also to befall him in the reverse fixture later that season. This was the fiftieth time a substitute had netted in Benítez’s reign. 1969 - We lost 1-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to a Willie Morgan strike. Joy and despair at Ewood 2003 - Michael Owen netted a brace, including a penalty, as we came from behind to win 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Kewell also on target after Matt Jansen had scored for the home side. Anthony Le Tallec made his senior debut, while Jerzy Dudek played his hundredth reds game. However, the game was badly marred, firstly by Milan Baroš breaking his ankle in an accidental collision with the on-loan Markus Babbel. This was followed later in the first half by Lucas Neill breaking Jamie Carragher’s leg, for which he was sent off. Trent’s half century 2022 – Trent Alexander-Arnold played his fiftieth European game for the reds as we beat Ajax 2-1 in a UEFA Champions League group stage game at Anfield. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring, with Mohammed Kudus equalising before the break. Joël Matip nodded in a late winner. Spanish encounters 2005 - We won 2-1 in the Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera to see off Real Betis Balompié in our Champions League group game. Florent Sinama-Pongolle opened the scoring with Luis García also on target. Arzu struck a second-half consolation for the Spanish side. 2017 – Joe Gomez was sent off late on as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Sevilla in our UEFA Champions League group game. We reached a double century of goals in Europe’s premier club competition as Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both scored, with the former also missing a penalty. Births and deaths 1944 - Left-back Peter Wall was born in Westbury. ‘Max’ signed for his local club Shrewsbury Town on his eighteenth birthday, arriving at Anfield from Wrexham in a deal that cost us £35,000 for him and full-back Stuart Mason in October 1966. He failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. 1942 – Forward Jack Parkinson died. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1961 – Former Assistant Manager Željko Buvač was born in Prijedor, now part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He worked with Jürgen Klopp as his “brain” across three clubs from 2001 until April 2018. 1962 - Former Assistant Physiotherapist Mark Browes was born in Colchester. The ex-Colchester United centre-forward was Dave Galley’s number two, before working with physio Víctor Salinas. He switched to Melwood in 2002 after spells on the backroom staff for Aylesbury United and Queens Park Rangers but left the reds after seven years. 1968 – Keeper Carl Muggleton was born in Leicester. He joined the reds on loan from his hometown club in 1990 but never even made the first-team bench. 1986 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields died. He signed from Cowdenbeath in May 1949, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951. 2004 – Midfielder James McConnell was born in Newcastle. He joined from Sunderland as an Under-15, turning professional in September 2021. Losing our grip 1978 - We lost 2-0 at Nottingham Forest in the first leg of our European Cup First Round encounter, our hundredth game in Europe, as we began to lose our grip on the trophy that we had won for the previous two seasons. Garry Birtles and Colin Barrett grabbed the goals. We could only secure a goalless draw in the Anfield return, as Forest went on to claim the cup for the first of two consecutive seasons. A goalscoring debut 1894 – Inside-right Jimmy Ross scored on his reds bow, but it was not enough to prevent us losing 2-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers. Terry McDermott netted from the spot, while David Fairclough bagged a brace with Graeme Souness also scoring. Money only made seventeen first-team appearances during his two years in L4, leaving for Luton Town in April 1982. 1997 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton made his debut for Sheffield Wednesday as they lost 2-1 in the League at Anfield, with reds legend Steve Nicol also in the visiting side. Paul Ince and Michael Thomas were on target for the reds in the second half, the latter with his twelfth and last goal for the club, before Wayne Collins headed in a late consolation. Back in the League Cup 1967 – We played our first game in the Football League Cup for nearly seven years, with Peter Thompson netting against his future employers Bolton Wanderers as we were held to a 1-1 draw in a Second Round tie at Anfield, with Franny Lee scoring the first of his six goals against the reds. Unfortunately, we crashed out in the replay two weeks later. Award winners 2013 – Brendan Rodgers was named Barclays Manager of the Month for August, with forward Daniel Sturridge announced as Player of the Month. We had won both League games that month 1-0, with Sturridge on target in both. The doc again 1975 – David Johnson struck the last of his four goals past us as we lost 2-0 at Ipswich Town, with Terry Austin also on the scoresheet. Into management 2004 - Graeme Souness was appointed Manager of Newcastle United, a week after resigning as boss of Blackburn Rovers. He led them to fourteenth in the League in his first season in charge, and then spent a large sum of money on a host of new players including ex-reds hero Michael Owen, before being sacked in February 2006. 1974 - Ian St. John was appointed Portsmouth boss. He managed them for three seasons, although his record was poor, leading them to just 31 victories in 124 games in charge as Pompey were relegated into the old Third Division, and then narrowly escaped a further descent to the League basement. An eight-goal thriller against City 1924 - We beat Manchester City 5-3 at Anfield, with three of our goals coming in the last ten minutes. Danny Shone netted twice with Dick Johnson bagging his thirtieth and last reds goal and Donald McKinlay and Dick Forshaw also on the scoresheet. Frank Roberts struck the first two of his six goals past us, with Horace Barnes bagging one of his nine. 1941 - We also defeated City when Dickie Dorsett and Billy Liddell struck in a 4-3 Wartime League victory at Maine Road, with Cyril Done nabbing a brace. Gordon’s treble 1933 – Gordon Hodgson struck a hat-trick as we trounced Southport 8-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Sam English and Alf Hanson each netted twice, with Dave Wright also on target. Disappointment at opposite ends of the country We have played both Portsmouth and Sunderland twice in the top flight on this day in history, without securing a single win. 1902 - Sam Raybould was on target from the spot as we lost 2-1 at Roker Park. Stig’s bow 1988 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye made his debut for Norway Under-21’s in their 1-1 draw with Scotland in a European Championships qualifier in Drammen. Olympian reds 2000 - Brad Friedel and future red Milan Baroš faced each other in an Olympics group match in Canberra. The game ended 2-2. Terry Mac off the mark 1975 - Terry McDermott netted his first reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Burnley. He went on to bag 81 in total in 329 reds games. Ray Clemence was playing his 300th reds game. 1980 - We won at White Hart Lane in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, with Terry McDermott scoring the only goal of the game when he knocked the ball up in the air with his left foot, and volleyed it home with his right, a strike that was later voted the BBC’s Goal of the Season. 1913 - We also visited Spurs, losing by the same score in a top-flight encounter, our fourth straight defeat in North London. In and out of Europe 2006 - We were beaten 2-0 at home by SL Benfica to lose our grip on the Champions League, crashing out 3-0 on aggregate at the last sixteen, failing to score in the fourth consecutive European game, a club record. Sami Hyypiä missed his first European game since our 2-0 defeat of Borussia Dortmund in October 2001, having played every minute of the intervening 57 matches. Simão Sabrosa and Fabrizio Miccoli scored for the visitors. 2022 - Lautaro Martínez struck the only goal of the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter with Internazionale at Anfield, with the reds hitting the woodwork three times. Alexis Sánchez was sent off for the visitors two minutes later as we progressed 2-1 on aggregate, on our way to the Final in Paris. Thumping the Geordies 2008 - We beat Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield, with the first goal coming when a defensive clearance ricocheted off Jermaine Pennant and into the net. Fernando Torres then grabbed his 25th goal of the season on the stroke of half time after being played in by Steven Gerrard. The roles were reversed in the second period, with the Spaniard providing an assist for his captain to complete the scoring. Future red James Milner broke his foot in this match. 1924 – Tommy Lucas reached a century of reds games as we lost 1-0 at St. James’ Park in an FA Cup Fourth Round meeting, the fourth time in a row they had knocked us out of the cup, after previous wins in 1908, 1913 and 1921. Our next FA Cup meeting ended much more happily, in the Final in 1974. On our way to Wembley 1992 - We met our only top-flight opposition in that season’s FA Cup-winning campaign, as a Michael Thomas goal saw off Aston Villa at Anfield. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged the only goal of the game at Crystal Palace as we reached the Coca-Cola Cup Final 2-0 on aggregate. This was our 300th League Cup goal. 2015 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Blackburn Rovers in our FA Cup Sixth Round encounter, going on to win the replay and make it as far as a Wembley Semi-final. 1947 – We beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield. Two-ton Brucie 1986 – Bruce Grobbelaar played his 200th League game for the club as we thumped Queens Park Rangers 4-1 at Anfield three days after they had knocked us out of the Milk Cup at the Semi-final stage at Anfield, despite Leroy Rosenior giving the visitors the lead after just seven minutes. Player/Manager Kenny Dalglish returned to the side and was instrumental in our win as Steve McMahon bagged a brace with Ian Rush and John Wark also on target, as ex-red Michael Robinson featured for the Hoops. Disappointing debuts 1902 - Outside-right Arthur Goddard made the first of his 414 reds appearances in a 3-1 League defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Sam Raybould netting our consolation. Billy Wooldridge scored the first of his four goals against the reds as Jack Miller and Henry Preston also struck. 1978 - Long-time reserve keeper Steve Ogrizovic made his reds debut in a 4-2 top-flight defeat at Derby County. Boss Bob Paisley was so disappointed with the performance he said, “If I were in the horse racing world I would be hauled before the stewards for putting out non-triers.” Charlie George grabbed one of his five goals against the reds, with Gerry Daly nabbing a brace and Andy Crawford also scoring. Neil arrives 1928 – Half-back Neil McBain signed from St. Johnstone for £1,000. He played twelve times before moving on to Watford after eight months at Anfield, later managing the Hornets and Ayr United as well as coaching in Argentina. European memories 1966 - We beat Honvéd 2-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our European Cup Winners’ Cup Second Round tie, thanks to goals from Chris Lawler and Ian St. John. Lawler and Peter Thompson between them rattled the woodwork three times as we dominated the game. 2001 - We held Porto to a goalless draw on a sodden pitch in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Quarter-final at their Estádio das Antas. We won the return 2-0 to reach the last four. Also recently 2010 – We lost 1-0 to Wigan Athletic at their renamed DW Stadium, when Hugo Rodallega was on target. The closest we came in a poor performance was when Fernando Torres struck the outside of a post early on. Tom on target again 1919 - Tom Miller scored in his third consecutive game as we lost 3-2 at Blackpool in a Wartime League match, with Harry Lewis netting the other goal. 1950 - We also lost to the Seasiders, going down 1-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture. Dioufy’s farewell strike 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf bagged his sixth and final reds goal, ironically against his future employers. Michael Owen was also on target in our 2-0 defeat of Bolton Wanderers at Anfield, our hundredth meeting in the League. Don’s farewell 1958 - Right-back Don Campbell played his 48th and final reds game as we lost 3-1 at Bristol Rovers in a Second Division encounter. International reds on target 1989 - John Barnes netted in England’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying win in Albania, playing alongside team-mate Peter Beardsley. Gary Gillespie and Steve Nicol both played in Scotland’s 2-0 defeat of France at Hampden Park on the same day, with John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Ronnie Whelan and ex-red Kevin Sheedy all featuring in the Republic of Ireland’s goalless draw in Hungary, with future red István Kozma also in action. 1995 - Future red Patrik Berger bagged a brace as the Czech Republic beat Finland 4-1 in a friendly in Brno. It was the first of three consecutive games in which he scored for his country. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they held Greece to a 1-1 friendly draw in Athens, with future red Stéphane Henchoz and ex-red István Kozma also in international action. Young England debutants 1978 - Future reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they beat Italy 2-1 in the first leg of the European Championships Quarter-final at his home ground, Maine Road. 1994 - Tottenham Hotspur’s Nick Barmby made his Under-21’s bow in a 1-0 friendly defeat of Denmark at Brentford. Jamie Redknapp also played. On the way out 1920 - Half-back Harry Lowe left the reds for Nottingham Forest. He notched twice in 136 games for the reds after signing from Gainsborough Trinity in May 1911. Unfortunately, he had to miss the 1914 FA Cup Final through injury. 1928 – Forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was transferred to West Bromwich Albion. He signed on in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. 2001 - Stan Collymore announced his retirement as a player, aged just thirty, after walking out on Spanish side Real Oviedo. On the same day, future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s in their 5-0 thumping in Bulgaria. 2011 – Reserve Team Manager John McMahon left the club after nearly two years in the role. Foy for Scotland 2002 - Sixteen-year-old Robbie Foy scored a penalty for Scotland Under-17’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Lithuania in Bath. Sammy’s last 1950 – Future red Sammy Smyth won his final cap as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player in Ireland’s goalless draw with Wales in a World Cup qualifier in Wrexham that also counted for the British International Championships. Paisley’s treble 1941 - Future reds boss Bob Paisley bagged a hat-trick in a Wartime League fixture as we thrashed Wrexham 7-2 at Anfield. Dickie Dorsett grabbed a brace while Cyril Done and Billy Liddell were also on target. Cox for the Football League 1900 - Winger Jack Cox, who scored eighty goals in 361 games for the reds, represented the Football League in a 6-3 victory over a Scottish League team, also netting one of the goals. On the move 2013 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Khazar Lankaran. He led them to the Azerbaijan Supercup that October but resigned just a month later. 2002 - David Burrows signed for Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer from Birmingham City. He made 23 first-team appearances in his fourteen months at Hillsborough before retiring from the game. 1984 – Recent First Team Coach Kevin Keen signed as a professional for West Ham United. He netted thirty times in 279 games for the Irons, moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers for £600,000 in July 1993. Family changes 1938 – Ex-reds forward Gordon Hodgson’s wife died, leaving him in charge of two children. He was a Leeds United player at the time, and had struck 241 goals in 377 reds games, including a club record seventeen trebles, between signing from Transvaal in November 1925 and moving to Aston Villa for £3,000 in January 1936. 1985 - Terry McDermott became a father to Neale, who went on to also become a professional footballer. A first cap 2002 - Former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his first cap as a Keflavík player, his fourth to date, as they were thumped 6-1 by Brazil in a friendly in Cuiabá. Death of a legend 2001 - Legendary forward Billy Liddell died in Liverpool of Alzheimer’s disease. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1984 – Scottish left-half Jimmy McDougall died in Allerton. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. Moving out 2007 - Luis García re-signed for Club Atlético de Madrid for around £4m after thirty strikes, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, in 121 games. He had also helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov signed from Levski Sofia. However, he was sold to Twente in the Netherlands for €1.8m in February 2010 after a loan spell, as work permit problems meant he was unable to feature for the reds. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey left for Swansea City for an initial £5m fee, after seven strikes in 69 reds outings since signing from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010. On the same day, ex-reds forward Djibril Cissé signed for Russian side Kuban Krasnodar, having been released by Queens Park Rangers five days earlier. 1962 – Scottish keeper Bert Slater was sold to Dundee who were under the management of his brother Bob. He arrived from Falkirk in a swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962. 1931 – Forward Bob Clark left the reds for Nottingham Forest after eleven goals in 42 outings. He had signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. 2021 – Polish reserves keeper Kamil Grabara left the club for Danish side F.C. København, playing 76 times in his first two seasons. Can he? 2014 – Midfielder Emre Can signed from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £9.75m. He struck fourteen times in 167 outings, moving on to Juventus in June 2018 after his contract expired. Defensive signings 2008 – Right-back Philipp Degen signed on a free transfer from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund on a four-year deal. Injuries restricted him to just thirteen largely unconvincing senior outings. 1894 – Scottish keeper Harry McNaughton signed from St. Bernard’s. He only made one senior appearance, keeping a clean sheet in the Anfield derby in the October of that year. Warnock sent to Coventry 2003 - Stephen Warnock joined Coventry City on loan. He struck three times in 49 games for the Sky Blues as they finished twelfth in the First Division, becoming their Player of the Year. He finally made the break-through at Anfield under Rafael Benítez, but only bagged one goal in 67 reds games before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in January 2007. On the same day, ex-reserves forward Jon Newby joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Bury. He failed to find the net in fifteen games for the Terriers. 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou joined Olympique de Marseille on loan. He had struck five times in 48 games in his one year at Anfield and bagged one goal in nineteen League games for the Mediterranean outfit. The King returns 2009 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed to a role with the Academy and as a Club Ambassador. International firsts 1977 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his only senior international cap for Rhodesia before the country’s name change to Zimbabwe. They were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in a friendly in Salisbury. 2003 – Future red Ragnar Klavan made his senior bow as Estonia were thumped 5-1 by Lithuania in a friendly in Valga. 2021 – Jordan Henderson struck his first goal for England in their 4-0 defeat of Ukraine in their European Championships Quarter-final in Rome, with ex-red Raheem Sterling also featuring. Meanwhile, ex-red Luis Suárez scored in the shoot-out as Uruguay beat Colombia 4-2 after their Copa América Quarter-final had ended goalless in Brasilia, with future red Luis Díaz on the losing side. Happy birthday Doc 1958 – Former club doctor Mark Waller was born in Northampton. A reds fan since moving to Liverpool in 1977, he was in this role from 1993 until June 2010. 1926 - Keeper Charlie Ashcroft was born in Chorley. He signed for the reds in December 1943 and appeared 89 times before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955. Coaching changes 2011 – The appointment of Kevin Keen as First Team Coach was announced. Meanwhile, Iván Ortega left the reds to join Chelsea as Sports Therapist. Keen left the club in June 2012 after Kenny Dalglish’s sacking. 2012 - Keen joined West Bromwich Albion as Joint-Assistant Head Coach, working under Steve Clarke again until they were both sacked in December 2013.
