Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, a

Crouchie at the treble 2007 - Peter Crouch scored the perfect hat-trick of right-foot, header and left-foot shot as we thumped Arsenal 4-1 at Anfield to gain some measure of revenge for having been dumped out of both the FA and League Cups by the Gunners in L4 already that season. John Arne Riise played his 200th League game, while Daniel Agger grabbed the other goal, with William Gallas on target for the visitors. This was George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks’ first game as owners of the reds. 1969 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith converted a penalty at the s

Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

Dirk strikes again 2010 - Dirk Kuyt headed in his fiftieth reds goal from a corner, in his 181st game for the club, to secure a 1-0 derby victory at Anfield. Centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Marouane Fellaini, despite taking the ball, with both Fellaini and Stephen Pienaar lucky to avoid red cards in the first half. Pienaar was eventually dismissed in stoppage time. American issues 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that the Board had agreed the terms of an offer from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks to buy the club. Ablett’s able start 1986 - Gary Ablett made his reds bow, replacing the injured Alan Hansen as we held Charlton Athletic to a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. He went on to net just once in 147 games for the reds. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances. Happy birthday Ronnie 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. Lawler’s night 1978 - A testimonial match for full-back Chris Lawler was staged with the reds defeating Swansea City 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to a Ke

Igor Bišcan wrapped it up 2004 - We won a game of two halves at Craven Cottage. The reds were dismal in a first half that saw a Luis Boa Morte brace put Fulham 2-0 up. We drew level after the break thanks to a Zat Knight own goal and a close-range Milan Baroš strike, before Josemi was sent off following a second caution. Xabi Alonso, who had replaced the hapless Salif Diao at half time, then bagged his first reds goal, with the 4-2 win completed by Igor Bišcan’s glorious strike, his first League goal. All together now, “2-0 down, 4-2 up, Igor Bišcan wrapped it up.” First win in the Ukra

Another derby victory 2008 – A Fernando Torres brace after an hour of our trip to Goodison Park resulted in a 2-0 win, with a third goal harshly ruled out for an alleged foul by Dirk Kuyt. Tim Cahill was sent off late on for a challenge on Xabi Alonso. 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield as Steven Gerrard scored in the League for the sixteenth consecutive season, a new club record. Phil Jagielka equalised for the visitors with a wonder strike from distance in stoppage time. Three off in the derby 1999 - Sander Westerveld, Steven Gerrard and Everton’s Francis Jeffers were al

Four apiece 1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also enter

2,000 up 2004 - We hosted our 2,000th League game, with West Bromwich Albion on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat. Steve Finnan scored his only reds goal while Luis García bagged the first of his thirty strikes, after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring. Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games.
