Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Daniel Sturridge joined Bolton Wande

Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He has so far struck thirteen times in 130 reds games, helping us to keep 53 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed f

Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly di

World Cup winners 1966 - Our very own centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt won a World Cup winner’s medal as England famously defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley, after extra-time. On the same day, former reserves forward George Scott married Carole. Bill Shankly called him “the best player ever to play for my reserves”, but he failed to break through to the first team, later turning out for Aberdeen and Tranmere Rovers. 1997 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, who had won the World Cup with West Germany in 1990, was signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £1.8m. He scored fifteen times

Happy birthday Jan 1963 - Jan Mølby was born in Kolding. The big Dane arrived at Anfield in August 1984, signed by Joe Fagan for £225,000 from Ajax. He netted 61 times in his 292 reds games, including a remarkable forty of his 42 attempted spot-kicks. He won three League titles, two FA Cups and Screen Sport Super Cup while at Anfield, before moving into management. His armband proved he was a red 2007 - Fernando Torres signed from Club Atlético de Madrid for £20.2m in a six-year deal, although this fee was greatly inflated in the media. Bienvenida Iago! 2013 – Spanish forward Iago Aspas signed from Real Club Celta de Vigo for £7.7m. However, he only struck once in fifteen largely uninspiring outings, nine of those coming from off the bench. He returned to Spain with Sevilla on loan for a season before returning to Vigo for €5m in June 2015. Ryan the champion 2007 - Future red Ryan Babel scored and had a penalty saved for the Netherlands Under-21’s in the European Championships Final in Groningen, with the Dutch beating Serbia 4-1. He signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and was a classy figure in the centre of our defence on 620 occasions, notching fourteen times and helping us to an amazing trophy haul including eight League titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

Digger arrives 1987 - John Barnes was signed from Watford for £900,000. His transfer had been heavily trailed for at least six months, and Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, eventually moving on to Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997.
