Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to ne

The Saint departs 1971 - Ian St. John signed for Coventry City after a spell with Hellenic in South Africa. He had notched 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final. He had also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield since his arrival from Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. 2018 – German keeper Loris Karius joined Turkish side Beşiktaş JK on a two-year loan. He joined the reds for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He has made 49 f

Our first European triumph 1973 - We lost 2-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach with Jupp Heynckes getting both goals inside ten first-half minutes. However, that was enough to secure the UEFA Cup for the first time, as we had won the first leg 3-0 at Anfield two weeks before. We therefore became the first English side to claim the League title and a European trophy in the same season. Athens despair 2007 - We lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Athens thanks to a Pippo Inzaghi brace, with Bolo Zenden playing his 47th and final reds game. Dirk Kuyt headed our late consolat

European semi-finals 2001 - We became only the second team ever to stop Barcelona from scoring in both legs of a European tie, winning our UEFA Cup second leg at Anfield 1-0. Gary McAllister, who scored from the spot past future reds keeper Pepe Reina after Patrick Kluivert’s unnecessary handball, made his 700th club appearance in this game. Sander Westerveld later had Kopite hearts in mouths when he missed a back-pass that just rolled past his post. 1966 - We beat Celtic 2-0 at Anfield to reach the European Cup Winners’ Cup Final, in only our second season in European competition, with

Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 400th reds game. 1929 - We also netted five, winning 5-2 at Derby County, with Henry Race and John Clark both bagging braces, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford struck two of his nine goals agains

Welcome to Brucie 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for £250,000 from Vancouver Whitecaps. Our eccentric keeper played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups, three FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. Four for Mo 2018 – Mohamed Salah struck four times as we thumped Watford 5-0 at Anfield, which included his first hat-trick for the club. Roberto Firmino was also on target.
