    Happy birthday KHR 1965 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was born in Weiler. The German striker arrived from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for a £1.8m fee in July 1997, and struck fifteen times in 76 reds games, as well as having a positive influence on the young Michael Owen before joining Fulham for £200,000 in September 1999. 1900 – Full-back Jimmy Gray was born in Glasgow. The South African international signed from Transvaal in 1926 but only played one first-team game for the reds, a 2-1 home League defeat by Sheffield United in September 1928.     Clem for the first time 1968 - Ray Clemence played his first reds game as we lost a friendly 1-0 to Porto in their Estádio das Antas. Farewells 2011 - We lost in our final game of the season at Aston Villa, with future red Stewart Downing netting the only goal. David N’Gog played his 94th and last reds game. On the same day, ex-reds keeper Jerzy Dudek announced his retirement from playing. He had made 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although barely featured for their first team.

    Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final.     Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Skipper Ron Yeats called tails but the first attempt landed upright in the mud, although the Germans claimed it was leaning towards heads!     Unhappy hat-tricks 1961 - Winger Kevin Lewis scored a treble in our Second Division fixture at Bristol Rovers, but we still went down 4-3. Bobby Jones bagged a brace as Peter Hooper netted the last of his seven goals against us, with Harold Jarman also on target. 1908 - Joe Bache scored a hat-trick for Aston Villa in their 5-1 top-flight victory over us at Villa Park, three of his nine strikes against the reds, with our goal coming from inside-left Ronald Orr on his reds debut.     Stevie off but derby joy 2006 - Steven Gerrard was sent off at home to Everton for two quick-fire yellow cards before Phil Neville put us ahead at the end of the first half with a superb headed own goal from a corner.
