The start of it all 1892 - Everton voted to move from Anfield. John Houlding was therefore left with an empty ground, but no team to play in it. Within six months, Liverpool FC had been formed and was on its way to taking the Lancashire League by storm. God strikes again 2006 - Robbie Fowler struck the first goal of his second reds spell, opening the scoring against Fulham at Anfield. Collins John equalised before an own goal from Michael Brown put us 2-1 ahead at the break. Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch scored late on before Stephen Warnock grabbed his only ever goal for the cl

Rafa’s century 2009 – Rafael Benítez secured his hundredth League win as reds boss as we came from behind to trounce Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring from the spot but Fernando Torres hounded Nemanja Vidić into a mistake before coolly slotting home the equaliser, with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty a minute before the break. The hapless Vidić was sent off against the reds for the second time that season with a quarter of an hour to go, with Fábio Aurélio netting from the resultant free-kick. The day was complete when Andrea Dossena struck his s

The glory of Istanbul 2005 - We claimed the European Cup for the fifth time as we came from 3-0 down against the mighty AC Milan in Istanbul to triumph after a penalty shoot-out. Paolo Maldini scored before Hernan Crespo bagged a brace, with the reds having a strong penalty claim for handball turned down as well as losing Harry Kewell to injury half-way through the first period. The fans and team inspired each other in the second half as we began our comeback through skipper Steven Gerrard, whose goal was the only header of that season’s victorious European campaign. Red trebles 1999 - Robbie Fowler bagged a treble as we secured our record Premiership win, thrashing Southampton 7-1 at Anfield, with future loanee Paul Jones in the Saints’ goal. Dominic Matteo grabbed his first reds goal while Michael Owen, David Thompson and even Jamie Carragher were also on target. Robbie’s second goal was his hundredth League strike, with Egil Ostenstad nabbing the visitors’ consolation. 1909 - Inside-left Ronald Orr netted three as we beat Lincoln City 5-1 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Joe Hewitt and Jack Parkinson nabbed the others. In comes Roy 19

Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - Luis García netted twice before Milan Baroš struck his 27th and final reds goal as we beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 in the BayArena to reach the Quarter-finals of the Champions League 6-2 on aggregate. We were able to take our feet off the gas towards the end, as John Welsh made his Champions League debut and we ended the match with Antonio Núñez at right-back and Igor Bišcan alongside Welsh in the centre of defence, although Jacek Krzynówek grabbed a late consolation – cue “Rocking All Over The World”! Terry Mac off the mark 1975 - Terry McDermott netted his first reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Burnley. He went on to bag 81 in total in 329 reds games. Ray Clemence was playing his 300th reds game. 1980 - We won at White Hart Lane in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, with Terry McDermott scoring the only goal of the game when he knocked the ball up in the air with his left foot, and volleyed it home with his right, a strike that was later voted the BBC’s Goal of the Season. 1913 - We also visited Spurs, losing by the same score in a top-flight encounter, our fourth straight defeat in North

Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an e

We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving t

Crouchie at the treble 2007 - Peter Crouch scored the perfect hat-trick of right-foot, header and left-foot shot as we thumped Arsenal 4-1 at Anfield to gain some measure of revenge for having been dumped out of both the FA and League Cups by the Gunners in L4 already that season. Brucie’s farewell 1994 - Bruce Grobbelaar played his final reds game in a 2-0 League defeat at Leeds United, with David Wetherall and future red Gary McAllister on target, the latter via a deflection off Mark Wright. Our eccentric keeper had played 628 times in total, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. David James replaced him for the final minute, so beginning a run of 213 consecutive reds appearances. 1997 - We faced Leeds again, with Stan Collymore bagging a brace as we won 4-0 at Anfield, as Jamie Redknapp a

Dirk strikes again 2010 - Dirk Kuyt headed in his fiftieth reds goal from a corner, in his 181st game for the club, to secure a 1-0 derby victory at Anfield. Centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Marouane Fellaini, despite taking the ball, with both Fellaini and Stephen Pienaar lucky to avoid red cards in the first half. Pienaar was eventually dismissed in stoppage time. American issues 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that the Board had agreed the terms of an offer from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks to buy the club. Red hat-tricks 1966 - Roger Hunt netted three times in just nineteen minutes in the second half of our League game at home to Sunderland. He actually scored all the goals in our 4-0 victory that day. 1947 - Cyril Done grabbed his second hat-trick of the season, with Willie Fagan scoring the other two, as we jumped from seventh in the table to second with a 5-0 home win over Grimsby Town in snowy conditions. Wing-half Stan Palk made the first of his thirteen senior reds appearances in this game. 1944 - Done struck another treble as we trounced Crewe Alexandra 8-0 in a Wartime League match

On our way to Wembley 1981 - We reached our second League Cup Final as a Kenny Dalglish goal was enough to secure a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Anfield despite an equaliser from Kevin Reeves, one of his four goals past us, to ensure we progressed 2-1 on aggregate. Many happy returns 1964 - Mike Hooper was born in Bristol. He signed from Wrexham for £40,000 in October 1985 but spent most of his Anfield career as understudy to first Bruce Grobbelaar and then David James, although he managed to make 73 first-team appearances. 1977 - Salif Diao was born in Kedogou Tallie, Senegal.

Supersub’s treble 1980 - David Johnson missed our trip to Norwich City after receiving four stitches to a head wound acquired on international duty, while Graeme Souness was suspended, which meant that Bob Paisley made his first changes to the reds side for seventeen games. Sammy Lee and David Fairclough stepped in, with supersub notching his only reds hat-trick in our 5-3 win. We had fallen behind to a first-minute header from the veteran Martin Peters, the last of his fourteen goals past us, with Kevin Reeves levelling things again with his head before the break, one of his four strikes ag
