A new stadium 1999 - We played our first official game at Sunderland’s new Stadium Of Light, as goals from Michael Owen and Patrik Berger gave us a 2-0 win. A win at the Bridge 2011 – We won 2-1 at Chelsea when Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring. Future red Daniel Sturridge equalised, with ex-Blue Glen Johnson nabbing the late winner. An unwelcome European record 2001 - An early Michael Owen strike counted for nothing when Barcelona treated the Anfield crowd to a virtuoso display of attacking football, winning 3-1 in our Champions League group game. This remains the joint highest number of goals we have conceded at home in European competition. Patrick Kluivert, Fabio Rochemback and Marc Overmars struck for the visitors. Half a millennium against 2004 - We conceded our 500th goal in the Premier League when Chris Riggott struck in our 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Future red Bolo Zenden added the second. Al’s milestone 2021 – Alisson Becker reached a half century of clean sheets in the League as we thumped Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed in the opener before the break, with Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Takumi Minamino all on target in the second half. 1965 – We were held to a goalless draw at Stoke City, with Ian St. John playing his 200th reds game. Double treble 1943 - Robert Beattie and future reds Manager Don Welsh both scored hat-tricks as we thumped Southport 9-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Berry Nieuwenhuys, Cyril Done and Jackie Campbell netted the others. Tommy in 1959 – Left-half Tommy Leishman signed from St. Mirren for £10,000, having won the Scottish Cup with them. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. Reds firsts 1897 – Forward Pat Finnerhan struck his only reds goal in the final minute, the only score in our top-flight meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. 1937 – Irish right-back Billy Hood played the first of his three reds games as we lost a top-flight encounter with Huddersfield Town 1-0 at Anfield. Four against Vale 1991 - We won 4-1 at Port Vale in a League Cup Third Round replay, with Steve McManaman, Mark Walters, Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders grabbing our goals. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Third Division Peterborough United in the next round. Royal approval 2005 - Prince Charles and the Duchess of York visited Anfield to meet participants in the Prince’s Trust football initiative. As part of their visit, they posed for pictures on the pitch with Chairman David Moores, Manager Rafael Benítez, club captain Steven Gerrard and the European Cup. Births and death 1961 - Ex-reserves centre-back Dave Watson was born in Liverpool. He never broke through into the reds first team and went on to far greater success with Norwich City and across Stanley Park. 1993 – Former reserves forward Henoc Mukendi was born in Zaire. He joined the youth system in 2007, signing a new two-year contract in May 2012, but never managed to make the breakthrough, moving into non-League football. 1998 – Outside-right Fred Morris died. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games after joining from Mansfield Town for £7,000 in May 1958, before moving to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. On the move 1992 - Stan Collymore joined First Division Southend United from Crystal Palace for £150,000. He struck eighteen times in 33 games in his one season with the Shrimpers, before joining Nottingham Forest in a £2m deal in July 1993. 2017 – The departure of Andy Renshaw as Head of Physiotherapy was announced. He had been with the club since 2009. Nottingham wins 1954 - Billy Liddell grabbed the only goal of the game from the spot at Anfield as we beat Nottingham Forest in a Second Division fixture with keeper Doug Rudham making his reds bow. 1982 - Craig Johnston and Kenny Dalglish were on target as we won 2-1 at Notts County. Also recently 2010 – We beat West Ham United 3-0 at Anfield, with all the goals coming before the break. Ex-Hammer Glen Johnson opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty, with Maxi Rodríguez also heading in. International goalscorers 1974 - John Toshack was on target as Wales thumped Luxembourg 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Swansea. Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway and Emlyn Hughes also played in qualifiers that day. 1929 – Forward Tosh Johnson bagged a brace as England thumped Wales 6-0 in the British International Championships at Stamford Bridge while winning his final cap as a Manchester City player. Fellow future red Ernie Blenkinsop also played. Final caps 2002 - Milan Baroš struck as the Czech Republic were held to a 3-3 friendly draw in Teplice by Sweden, with clubmate Vladimír Šmicer also playing. Former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his eighth and final cap as Iceland lost a friendly 2-0 in Estonia. Jerzy Dudek and John Arne Riise were also in international action that day, as were future reds Yossi Benayoun, Steve Finnan, Paul Jones, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Christian Poulsen, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden, as well as ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen. 2018 – Dominic Solanke netted a brace while winning his last England Under-21’s cap as a reds player in their 5-1 thrashing of Denmark in Esbjerg. On the same day, Danny Ward played for Wales for the first time since moving to Leicester City in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Albania, while Mamadou Sakho won his first cap as a Crystal Palace player as France beat Uruguay 1-0 in a friendly in Paris. Future red Diogo Jota was on target while skippering Portugal Under-21’s, winning his twentieth and last cap at this level as they lost 3-1 in a European Championships Play-off to Poland. Tom Clayton played for Scotland Under-19’s for the third and last time as they drew 2-2 with Sweden in a qualifier in Rhyl, while future red Cody Gakpo struck while winning his fifth and last cap for the Dutch Under-20’s as they beat Italy 3-2 in an Elite League group game. Ajax’s Ryan Gravenberch was on target for the Dutch Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat or Portugal in Armenia. Also in action that day were Rafael Camacho, Roberto Firmino, Kamil Grabara, Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Andy Robertson, Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn, future reds Arthur Melo, Takumi Minamino and Sepp van den Berg and ex-reds Joe Allen and Luis Suárez. Facing the Latics 1946 – We were held to a 3-3 draw in the Second Round of the Lancashire Senior Cup at Anfield, with Bill Jones bagging a brace and Billy Liddell also on target. We won the replay, going on to claim the trophy for the seventh time. 1915 – We won a Wartime League fixture 2-1 at Boundary Park, thanks to a William Banks brace. Kenny and Souey for the Scots Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness have both played for Scotland at Hampden Park twice on this day in history. 1974 - They both featured in a 2-1 defeat by Spain in a European Championships qualifier, before either of them had joined the reds. 1985 - Kenny won his 99th cap as Sampdoria’s Souness skippered Scotland to a 2-0 World Cup Play-off win over Australia. Gordon Hodgson and Harry Chambers were on target. 1920 – We lost 2-0 at Newcastle United. 1909 – Arthur Goddard and Jimmy Stewart scored as we beat Preston North End 2-0 in L4. Other internationals 2022 - Caoimhín Kelleher kept a clean sheet as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly 1-0 in Malta. Future red Dominik Szoboszlai plated as Hungary beat Greece 2-1 in Budapest on the same day. 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Rotherham. 2014 – Cooper managed England Under-16’s in their 2-1 defeat of Scotland in the Victory Shield in Yeovil, with young red Adam Lewis featuring. 2013 – Luis Suárez featured in Uruguay’s goalless draw with Jordan in the second leg of their World Cup Play-off in Montevideo as they reached the Finals in Brazil. 2008 – Future red Raul Meireles played for Portugal in their 6-2 friendly defeat in Brazil. 2007 – Javier Mascherano and future red Maxi Rodríguez played in Argentina’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Colombia. Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly died in January 2012, aged just 46. 1993 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was born in Camden, north London. He left Tottenham Hotspur to join the reds in 2014, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2016 after a successful loan spell there. Red farewells 1977 - John Toshack made his 246th and final reds appearance in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City, setting up the goal for Kenny Dalglish. 1898 – Left-back Tom Wilkie played his 64th and last game for the club as we lost 3-0 at Bury as Jimmy Settle struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Michael Kelly also on target. Anfield trebles 1921 - Centre-forward Danny Shone bagged a treble in our 4-0 defeat of Middlesbrough, with Tommy Lucas adding a penalty. 1927 - We faced Boro again in the First Division, holding them to a 1-1 draw at Ayresome Park, with Harry Chambers on the scoresheet. 1932 - Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds trebles as we thrashed Derby County 6-1 in a top-flight meeting, with right-back Bob Done playing his hundredth League game. Dave Wright and Syd Roberts also netted to add to a George Collin own goal. Peter Ramage’s consolation was one of his five strikes past the reds. Crouchie not yet off the mark 2005 - Steve Finnan reached a century of reds games as we beat Portsmouth 3-0 at Anfield. Peter Crouch saw his penalty saved as he still awaited his first goal for the club. Fortunately, Bolo Zenden converted the rebound and Djibril Cissé and Fernando Morientes were also on target to secure victory. We ended the game with ten men after Xabi Alonso had to limp off after we had used all three of our substitutes. This was Alain Perrin’s final game as Pompey boss. Tons up 2016 – Emre Can played his hundredth reds game as we drew 0-0 in a League game at Southampton, despite dominating the game. 2000 - We reached a century of goals against under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. Robbie Fowler nabbed our consolation strike, with Les Ferdinand netting the last of his six strikes against the reds, and Tim Sherwood scoring the final one of his three goals past us. Leeds thumped 1966 - We secured our record equal victory over Leeds United as goals from Chris Lawler, Peter Thompson, Ian St. John and a Geoff Strong brace handed us a 5-0 top-flight win at Anfield. 1955 - We also faced Leeds, going down 4-2 at Elland Road in a Second Division encounter. Billy Liddell netted from the spot, with Alan Arnell also on the scoresheet for the reds. John Price played his only senior reds game this day, at left-back. The legendary John Charles bagged a brace for the home side, with Harold Brook and Jack Overfield also on target while full-back Ray Lambert played his 342nd and last game for the reds. More births and a death 1994 – Reserves forward Jack Dunn was born in Liverpool. He scored while making his first senior appearance in our post-season friendly at Shamrock Rovers in May 2014, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in June 2017 after being released by the reds. 1993 – Spanish midfielder Jesús Fernández Sáez, known as Suso, was born in Cádiz. He signed on as a professional on his seventeenth birthday, having left his hometown club the previous summer. He made 21 senior appearances, scoring once before signing on with AC Milan in January 2015. 1931 - Defender Ernest Peake died. He arrived as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. The cup can be cruel 1892 - We suffered our first ever FA Cup defeat, losing 2-1 to Northwich Victoria at their Drill Field ground in the Third Qualifying Round. Tom Wyllie scored our consolation, while outside-left Andrew Kelvin was making his sixth and last reds appearance. Ton up for Jan 1986 – Coventry City held us to a goalless draw in our League Cup Fourth Round tie at Highfield Road as Jan Mølby reached a century of reds games. International beginnings and ends 2019 – Simon Mignolet won his first cap for Belgium since joining Club Brugge in their 6-1 European Championships qualifying thumping of Cyprus in Brussels, with ex-red Christian Benteke bagging a brace. Gini Wijnaldum netted a hat-trick while captaining his country for the first time as the Netherlands beat Estonia 5-0 in another qualifier in Amsterdam, while ex-red Philippe Coutinho scored in Brazil’s 3-0 win over South Korea in Abu Dhabi, his only goal and last cap while on loan at Bayern München, with future red Arthur Melo playing for the last time while with Barcelona. Emre Can played for Germany for the last time while with Juventus, in their 6-1 trouncing of Northern Ireland in a qualifier in Frankfurt. Moving on 1999 - Ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Conference side Kidderminster Harriers. He struck four times in 24 appearances in his one season at Aggborough, before joining Southport on a free transfer. 2004 - Ex-reds winger Nicky Rizzo returned to England from Italy to sign for MK Dons. The Aussie netted five times in sixty games for the League Two outfit before returning to his native land in May 2007 to join Perth Glory. Staying put 2021 - Ex-Academy Coach Neil Critchley signed a new contract as Manager of Blackpool. He led them to a total of 45 wins in 109 games between being appointed in March 2020 and quitting in June 2022 to become Steven Gerrard’s Assistant at Aston Villa. The scoring was completed in injury time by Álvaro Arbeloa, who struck his second and final goal for the club. 1947 - Grimsby Town lost 3-1 at Anfield in a top-flight encounter with Kevin Baron notching his first reds goal, and Albert Stubbins and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet. Coady starts out 2012 – Midfielder Conor Coady made his reds bow as we lost 1-0 to the wealthy Anji Makhachkala in a UEFA Europa League group game in Moscow. Dani Pacheco came off the bench for his seventeenth and last appearance for the club, with centre-forward Adam Morgan playing for the third and final time. Lacina Traoré netted on the stroke of half time past Brad Jones. 2015 – We lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace as Steven Gerrard watched from the stands for the first time since leaving for LA Galaxy, with Philippe Coutinho equalising after Yannick Bolasie had given the Eagles the lead. Scott Dann headed in a late winner for the visitors, with boss Jürgen Klopp saying he felt “pretty alone” as the goal led to a mass crowd exodus. Happy birthdays 1981 - Joe Cole was born in Islington, London. He notched just five times in 42 reds outings after joining on a free transfer from Chelsea in July 2010, spending a season on loan at Lille OSC Métropole before returning to West Ham United for free in January 2013. He signed as a professional with the Hammers on his seventeenth birthday, on the Upton Park pitch prior to a game against Chelsea, with the stadium announcer somewhat excitedly saying, “you can tell your grandchildren you were here when Joe Cole signed”. 1999 – Left-back Adam Lewis was born in Liverpool. He made his senior bow in the FA Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Shrewsbury Town at Anfield in February 2020, spending much of his time out on loan to date. 1918 – Forward John Shafto was born in Humshaugh. He signed from Hexham in November 1936, netting seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. Facing the Mancs 1975 - We saw off Manchester United 3-1 thanks to Steve Heighway’s fiftieth reds strike and goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan, with Steve Coppell netting for the visitors. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, joining Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. He became a father for the seventh time on his 47th birthday. Anfield goalscoring feats 1992 - Ian Rush scored his 200th League goal, including fourteen for Chester. Jimmy Phillips scored the first Premier League penalty against the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-1. Ronnie Rosenthal grabbed a brace, with Steve McManaman also on target, while future reds bench-warmer Stephen Pears was in the visitors’ goal. The Blues had Eamonn O’Keefe dismissed for a high, late challenge on Ronnie Whelan, with Mick Ferguson netting for the visitors. Farewell to Melwood 2020 – The reds trained at Melwood for the last time, ahead of the move to Kirkby. It had been the club’s training ground since the 1950’s. He signed from Brighton United in August 1900, scoring four times in 221 reds games, moving on to Partick Thistle in May 1909, later spending time coaching back at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-right Don Woan was born in Liverpool. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. 1990 – Spanish centre-half Daniel Ayala was born in Seville. He signed from Sevilla for £160,000 in September 2007, making his senior debut as substitute in our 2-1 League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in August 2009, and his first start as we thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield three days later. Gloves on and off 1919 - Pre-war reds custodian Ned Doig died from Spanish flu. King Kenny dismissed 1984 - Kenny Dalglish and SL Benfica’s Minervino Pietra were both sent off after a scuffle as we lost 1-0 in the Estádio da Luz with Bruce Grobbelaar conceding an early penalty, although we progressed to the Third Round of the European Cup 3-2 on aggregate as Mark Lawrenson reached 200 reds appearances. The other goals came from a Tommy Smith penalty, Ian St. John, Tony Hateley and Peter Thompson. 1972 - Emlyn Hughes bagged a brace as we won 3-1 at AEK Athens although he handled to give away the penalty that the Greeks scored from. Phil Boersma added the final goal, one of four he scored in that season’s victorious UEFA Cup campaign. Derby disappointment 1998 - Jamie Redknapp grabbed our late consolation as we lost 2-1 at home to Derby County, Roy Evans’ last League game as joint Manager. Paulo Wanchope struck one of his four goals past us, with Kevin Harper also scoring for the visitors. 1970 - We also faced the Rams when we held them to a goalless draw at the Baseball Ground. First caps 1992 - Myllykosken Pallo-47’s Sami Hyypiä won his first full international cap as Finland drew 1-1 in a friendly in Tunisia. He stayed in the job for less than three months before resigning. 2011 – Dietmar Hamann resigned as Stockport County boss, after a failed takeover of the club. On the same day, Dave Watson was appointed Under-18's Coach at Newcastle United. Beginning and end 1918 – Forward Wilf Bartrop died in First World War action in Warcoing, Belgium. He arrived from Barnsley for £900 in May 1914, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. 1923 - Joe Keetley signed from Accrington Stanley for £1,200, netting twice in nine reds games before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1925. Happy birthday Uncle Roy 1948 - Roy Evans was born in Bootle. One of the club’s greatest servants, he served as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. He only made eleven first team appearances before injury cut his career short, but his time as reserves boss was incredibly successful, leading them to eleven Central League titles, including seven in nine seasons. However, his time as the main man was less glittering, as he could only claim one Coca Cola Cup. 1927 - Wing-half Bryan Williams was born in Liverpool. He netted five times in 34 reds games after arriving from South Liverpool at the end of the Second World War, moving on to Crewe Alexandra in May 1954, where he became a regular. 2001 – Midfielder Matteo Ritaccio was born in New York. He arrived at the Academy in August 2018, signing as a professional fifteen months later. Farewell Brendan 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, with boss Brendan Rodgers getting the sack later that same day. Danny Ings headed us into the lead but Romelu Lukaku equalised just four minutes later, on the stroke of half time, the most recent of his five strikes past us to date. Rodgers had led us to 85 victories in his 166 games in charge, failing to win any silverware but guiding us to within a whisker of claiming the League title in 2013/14. Red centurions 2022 – James Milner played his 300th reds game, and fiftieth for the reds in the UEDA Champions League, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also reaching that milestone in the competition as we beat Rangers 2-0 in a group game at Anfield. Trent opened the scoring from a free-kick, with Mohamed Salah converting a second-half penalty after Luis Díaz was fouled. Ouch 1998 - Pierluigi Casiraghi netted his only Chelsea strike. Phil Babb attempted to prevent the goal but only succeeded in wrapping his legs around a post at the Anfield Road end, causing grown men around the ground to wince in sympathy, and he was taken off shortly after. Jamie Redknapp equalised for the reds late on. 2009 – We lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, thanks to the last of Nicolas Anelka’s five strikes against the reds and a Florent Malouda goal. Italian despair 2012 – Jonjo Shelvey headed us in front against Udinese in a UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, but the Italian side went 3-1 ahead thanks to Antonio Di Natale, a Sebastián Coates own goal and Giovanni Pasquale. Luis Suárez scored a late free-kick, but we still lost 3-2. Trebles for 1989 - Steve Staunton bagged a hat-trick as we beat Wigan Athletic 3-0 in an away League Cup tie that was switched to Anfield. He had come on in the second half as an emergency forward substitute after Ian Rush had limped off. 1941 - Cyril Done netted a treble in our 5-5 Wartime League draw at New Brighton, his third in consecutive games. Dicky Dorsett grabbed the other two. Out-gunned 2003 - We lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal, with Harry Kewell netting after a quarter of an hour, and Michael Owen suffering a shin injury. Durnin for the reds 2006 - Liverpool and Celtic drew a charity legends match at Celtic Park 2-2, with the reds’ goals coming from John Durnin and Steve McManaman. On the move 2006 - David Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Darlington after 51 victories in his 144 games in charge of this third spell with the Quakers. Happy birthday Walshie 1962 - Paul Walsh was born in Plumstead. He signed from Luton Town for £700,000 in May 1984 and struck 37 times in 112 reds games, winning a League title and the Screen Sport Super Cup before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988. 1879 – Bobby Robinson was born in Sunderland. He moved to the reds from his hometown club for £500 in February 1904. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, and also helped us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913. A double treble 1980 - Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott both scored trebles as we thumped Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 10-1 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup by 11-2 on aggregate. This was Souness’s first treble for the reds, which included a penalty. Sammy Lee and Ray Kennedy were also on target, with David Fairclough bagging a brace, with the first being his fiftieth reds strike. Beating the Blues 2011 – We won 2-0 at Everton, with Jack Rodwell sent off half-way through the first half for a late tackle on Luis Suárez. Dirk Kuyt had a penalty saved just before the break, while Charlie Adam struck the crossbar. However, we eventually triumphed thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Suárez. Off the mark 2008 - Robbie Keane finally scored his first reds goal, in his eleventh outing, to put us three ahead in our 3-1 Champions League defeat of PSV Eindhoven at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard bagging his hundredth goal for the club, courtesy of a 25-yard free-kick at the Kop end. Left-half Tom Bromilow was playing his 300th reds game. We had gone in 6-0 up at half-time, as well as having two goals ruled out, for handball and offside. 1994 - Steve McManaman was denied his only reds treble while making his hundredth League appearance when his third goal in our 4-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield was later credited as a Des Walker own goal. Ian Rush equalised after the break after we had gone in behind to an Ian Nolan goal. 2022 - Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick for the visitors as Brighton & Hove Albion held us to a 3-3 draw in Roberto de Zerbi’s first game in charge of the Seagulls. Also recently 2017 – Philippe Coutinho scored in his third consecutive game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Rafael Benítez’s Newcastle United. 1988 – Newcastle United won a top-flight fixture 2-1 at Anfield, despite Gary Gillespie heading us into an early lead. John Hendrie equalised after half an hour, with Mirandinha converting a late penalty to secure the win. 2016 – We won 2-1 at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium, falling behind to an early Leroy Fer goal. Roberto Firmino headed in after the break, with James Milner securing the victory from the spot after Firmino was felled. 2020 – We lost 5-4 on penalties to Arsenal after our League Cup Fourth Round tie ended goalless behind closed doors at Anfield. Brothers in arms 1867 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He signed from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and made 61 reds appearances, bagging eighteen goals, helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons, before joining Derby County in July 1895. His brother Matt played 103 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. 1898 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth was born in Bootle. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in January 1918, turning pro in May 1919. He struck three times in 55 reds games, often playing alongside his brother, centre-half Walter. He moved on to Leicester City in June 1924 for £250. Billy’s farewell 1921 – Forward Billy Matthews played his ninth and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea, with Dick Forshaw on target. National fervour on Merseyside 1938 - Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was at Goodison, a few days after returning from Munich with the famous “piece of paper” signed by Hitler that he felt would avert war. The crowd responded by singing the National Anthem, but Willie Fagan’s penalty could not prevent us losing 2-1 to Everton. Disappointment at Old Trafford 1995 - Robbie Fowler struck twice as Eric Cantona’s comeback game after a nine-month ban ended all square. Nicky Butt opened the scoring, with Cantona converting a penalty to level the scores, one of his five goals past us. 1977 - We also visited Manchester United, losing 2-0 thanks to goals from Lou Macari and Sammy McIlroy. Zico senior missed 1983 - Phil Neal missed his first League game since December 1974 as we went down 1-0 at home to Sunderland, with Gary Rowell on target from the spot. Future reds in action 1924 - Forward Gordon Hodgson and keeper Arthur Riley both played for a South Africa XI that beat a reds side of mainly reserves at Anfield, with defender Balaert Shears twice drawing the reds level. Hodgson and Riley would both later sign for the club. Under the lights 1958 - We beat Everton 2-1 at home in the first leg of the short-lived Floodlight Challenge Cup, with Alan Arnell and Jimmy Melia on the scoresheet. We won the return leg 3-2 to retain the trophy. Also in Europe 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Swiss side Sion in a UEFA Europa League game at Anfield, with Adam Lallana firing the reds an early lead before we were pegged back. 2014 – We lost 1-0 at Basel in our UEFA Champions League group encounter, with Marco Streller on target after the break. 1974 - Ray Kennedy netted the only goal of the game at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo as we beat Norwegian amateurs Strømsgodset to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup by a huge 12-0 aggregate scoreline. This was Kevin Keegan’s first game back after his lengthy suspension following his dismissal in that season’s FA Charity Shield. On the move 1999 - Steve Nicol was named as interim head coach of New England Revolution for the first time, following the sacking of Walter Zenga. He remained in charge at the Gillette Stadium until October 2011. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Momo Sissoko signed for Indian Super League side Pune City, scoring twice in thirteen games before joining Ternana in Italy in February 2017. 2019 - Vitor Matos joined as Elite Development Coach, arriving from Porto. 2021 – Ex-reds forward Daniel Sturridge signed for Perth Glory but was unable to score in just six appearances as he again struggled with injuries. A black day for the club 1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şahin bagging the last of his three reds strikes and Leon Barnett deflecting a Steven Gerrard shot into his own net. Aldo’s treble 1987 - John Aldridge scored a hat-trick past Peter Shilton, including two penalties, in our 4-0 defeat of Derby County. Peter Beardsley bagged the other, while John Barnes had a goal disallowed for scoring direct from an apparently indirect free-kick as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th reds game. Rushie’s European record 1992 - Ian Rush scored his twentieth and final European goal, a then club record, in our 2-1 win at Apollon Limassol in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Don Hutchinson scored the second as we progressed 8-2 on aggregate. Paul Stewart was dismissed late on after a tangle with the Cypriot keeper Christophi. Moving on 1982 - Terry McDermott left the reds to re-join Newcastle United. He had struck 81 times in 329 reds games after signing from the Toon for £175,000 in November 1974, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980, he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. Red centuries 2013 – Jordan Henderson played his hundredth reds game as we won 3-1 at his former club Sunderland, our 400th Premier League victory. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring with Luis Suárez adding a brace. 2007 - Substitute Yossi Benayoun’s strike past ex-red Chris Kirkland at Wigan Athletic ensured that the reds reached 400 away points in the Premiership as we won 1-0. However, the match was somewhat marred by fighting in the home stands when some reds celebrated our winning goal in amongst Latics fans. 1984 – Bruce Grobbelaar played his 200th game for the reds as Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 at Anfield. Ex-Evertonian Imre Varadi and Gary Shelton grabbed the goals. A goalscoring debut 1951 - Centre-forward Jack Smith scored on his reds debut in our 2-0 First Division defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Bryan Williams netting his first goal for the club as Bob Paisley played his 200th reds game and Phil Taylor reaching 300 appearances. Another European first 1965 - We made our first appearance in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, going down 1-0 to a late Gianfranco Leoncini pile-driver at Juventus with the home side also having three penalty appeals turned down. We won the second leg 2-0 and went on to reach the final. More European adventures 1970 - Emlyn Hughes struck a 25-yard equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Hungarian side Ferencvárosi in a Fairs Cup match, to go through to the Second Round 2-1 on aggregate. 1971 - Crazy Horse netted again as we beat Servette FC Genève 2-0 at Anfield, the first Swiss visitors to Anfield, with Steve Heighway also scoring, to reach the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. 1998 - Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace as we beat Kosice 5-0 in Slovakia to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 8-0 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler also netted twice, having previously missed a penalty, while Paul Ince was also on target with Patrik Berger and Michael Owen both hitting the woodwork. Marek Spilar was dismissed for the home side after an hour for yet another clumsy challenge on Owen. 2009 – We lost our Champions League group game 2-0 at Fiorentina, with Stevan Jovetić netting both goals, the first of his four goals past us to date. 1,500 at the City Ground 1979 - We played our 1,500th away League game, going down 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, with Garry Birtles netting. During this game, Viv Anderson’s indirect free-kick went straight in and was disallowed. Most recently 2018 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth reds game as we secured a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, with Daniel Sturridge’s fabulous late curled effort being his fiftieth reds League goal and his 67th and last strike for the club. He joined the Academy aged six, making the first-team bench for an FA Cup tie in January 2022. He featured for the first time in a 4-0 thumping by Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Thailand six months later. Irwin born 1990 – Ex-reserve Steven Irwin was born in Liverpool. He was promoted to Melwood in July 2008, having featured in the FA Youth Cup Final in 2006. He failed to break through to the first team proper, although he played in all three pre-season games in the summer of 2010 and was released in June 2011. Red farewells 1934 - Ex-red Tom Cooper skippered England while winning his fifteenth and final cap, as they thumped Wales 4-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff. 1996 – Forward Lee Jones made his fourth and last reds appearance as we won 2-1 at West Ham United. Stan Collymore put us in front before Slaven Bilić equalised after a quarter of an hour. Michael Thomas nabbed the second-half winner. Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when substitute Kenny Dalglish struck twice in a 5-2 victory, with Ronnie Whelan, Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also on target. Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen made his senior debut for the Hammers in this game. Ray Stewart put the home side in front inside ten minutes, with Tony Cottee bagging the first of his eight goals against the reds. Macca signs on 1985 - Steve McMahon signed from Aston Villa for £375,000, becoming the first arrival direct from Villa Park. Births and deaths 1892 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Rangers in May 1911 and took over from Sam Hardy in the reds goal, playing 142 times including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being replaced after the war by the great Elisha Scott. On exactly the same day, outside-left Albert Pearson was born in Tynemouth. He netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. 1988 - Jimmy Ryan was born in Maghull. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad. 1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 2003 – Inside-forward Harold Jones died. He joined the reds in January 1952, but only made one senior appearance in a 5-1 thumping at Anfield by Preston North End in September 1953. He moved on to Rhyl in June 1954. A goalscoring debut 1902 - Inside-right George Livingstone scored on his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 5-2 at Anfield in our first game of the season, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox both grabbing braces. Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick also debuted in this game, with Walter Whittaker nabbing two of his six goals against the reds. Four against 1913 - Danny Shea scored four of his ten goals against the reds as Blackburn Rovers thumped us 6-2 at Ewood Park, with Tom Miller netting both our goals and Bob Ferguson missing a penalty for the reds. Red centurions 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division fixture 3-0 at Bristol Rovers. He took up the vacant managerial post at Newcastle United the following week, but was sacked after seventeen months at St. James’ Park. Out with the old, in with the new 1995 - John Barnes won his 79th and final cap in England’s goalless friendly draw with Colombia at Wembley. He had scored eleven times for his country. Jamie Redknapp made his senior international debut in the same game, while Nick Barmby won his first cap as a Middlesbrough player. Steve McManaman also played. On the same day, Markus Babbel grabbed his only international goal as Germany beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Nuremberg. On the move 2005 – Brazilian keeper Alexander Doni joined Roma from Juventude in his native land for US$18,000. 2003 - Steve McManaman signed for Manchester City from Real Madrid on a free transfer. He appeared just 44 times for them without scoring before being released. 2002 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Aston Villa from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. He left Villa Park two years later, after three goals in 23 games. 1997 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed from Sydney Olympic. He never made our first team, and is currently back in his homeland, running a soccer school. 2006 – Future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Middlesbrough on loan from Real Madrid, making the move permanent for £7m the following summer. He played 52 times without scoring, moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for a reported £8m in January 2008. 2018 – Keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and winger Sheyi Ojo both signed new contracts, with Ojo then completing a loan move to Stade de Reims on the same day, where he scored once in eighteen games for their first team. 2021 – Left-back James Norris signed a new contract with the reds, having already made one senior appearance. On the same day, centre-half Ozan Kabak joined Norwich City on loan from Schalke 04, playing twelve times as they were relegated from the Premier League. 2022 - Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg penned a new deal, also joining Schalke 04 on loan on the same day, scoring once in nine games while in Germany. First caps 1996 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Columbus Crew player, and fortieth in total, as the USA beat El Salvador 3-1 in a friendly in Los Angeles. 2006 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses played for England Under-17’s for the first time, in their 2-2 friendly draw with Turkey. On the same day, future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland in Amstetten. Another super win 2005 - We fell behind to a goal from CSKA Moskva’s Velizar Dimitrov in Monaco, but a brace from substitute Djibril Cissé and a Luis García strike secured us the UEFA Super Cup for the third time, 3-1 after extra time, as we reached a century of goals under the stewardship of Rafael Benítez. The cup was lifted by stand-in skipper Jamie Carragher. Danny’s wonder goal 2006 - Daniel Agger scored his first reds goal, a superb long-range effort to level the scores in our 2-1 home defeat of West Ham United after Bobby Zamora had put the Hammers ahead in our fiftieth League meeting at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt made his debut as a second-half substitute after Peter Crouch had handed us the lead on the stroke of half time. 1972 - We also entertained the Irons, winning 3-2. Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson bagged a brace for the visitors, two of his five goals against the reds, with the scores levelled by John Toshack and then a Bobby Ferguson own goal before Emlyn Hughes grabbed the winner. Most recently 2012 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by the reigning champions Manchester City, with Lucas having to go off early with a thigh injury. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring with a header, with Yaya Touré equalising before a Luis Suárez free-kick put us back in front. However, Carlos Tévez capitalised on a slack Škrtel back-pass to hand the visitors a share of the spoils, the most recent of his four goals past us to date. Andy Carroll made his 58th and last reds appearance, from off the bench. Red births 1882 - Legendary keeper Sam Hardy was born in Newbold, Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and helped us to our second League title in his first season, going on to make 240 appearances before joining Aston Villa for £1,500 in May 1912. 1888 – Defender Ernest Peake was born in Aberystwyth. He arrived as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games before joining Third Lanark in May 1914 1945 - Full-back Tom Lowry was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in April 1963 but only ever played one first-team game, when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in June 1966, going on to set their club record of 436 League appearances that stands to this day. Hola and arrivederci 2007 – Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed from Boca Juniors for £1.675m, having initially joined on loan seven months earlier. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, moving on to Sporting Clube de Portugal permanently a year later. 2011 - Alberto Aquilani joined AC Milan on loan, having spent the previous campaign with Juventus. He netted once in 25 games for the Rossoneri, before being sold to Fiorentina earlier this month. 2016 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie on loan, scoring three times in 21 games. Other departures 1986 - Sammy Lee moved on to Queens Park Rangers after a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. 1963 – Winger Kevin Lewis left the reds for Huddersfield Town. He played 82 reds games after signing from Sheffield United for a club record £13,000 in June 1960 as Bill Shankly’s second capture, helping us to the Second Division title and scoring an impressive 44 times. Turkish delight 2010 - We won 2-1 at Trabzonspor in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Play-off, to reach the group stage 3-1 on aggregate as Roy Hodgson achieved his fourth straight European victory. Teófilo Gutiérrez netted for the home side early on, before a late Remzi Giray Kaçar own goal and Dirk Kuyt strike handed us victory on the night. Billy again 1959 – Billy Liddell bagged a brace in our 4-2 Second Division defeat of Bristol City at Anfield, thus scoring in his fifteenth consecutive season, a club record. Jimmy Melia converted a penalty with Alan A’Court also on target. John Atyeo bagged the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Rogers also on the scoresheet for the visitors. Outside the Shankly Gates 1982 - Nessie Shankly officially opened the Shankly Gates at Anfield. Trebles all round 1967 - Tony Hateley scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals that included a penalty, in our 6-0 thumping of Newcastle United. Emlyn Hughes also struck for the first time for the reds in the same game, with a Roger Hunt brace completing the scoring. 1953 - We also entertained the Geordies, with Kevin Baron on target twice in our 2-2 draw. 1961 - Hunt bagged a treble as we thumped Leeds United 5-0 at Anfield, our record equal victory over the Yorkshiremen. Kevin Lewis, with a penalty, and Jimmy Melia struck our others. We were promoted back to the top flight at the end of the season. 1922 - Centre-forward Dick Johnson struck a hat-trick in our 5-2 opening day defeat of Arsenal at Anfield in sweltering conditions. Double debuts 1933 - Forward Sam English and full-back Ben Dabbs both made their reds debuts in our 3-2 opening day defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Future red Billy Hartill scored, with Charlie Phillips and Billy Barraclough also on target as right-half Tom Morrison played his 200th League game for the reds. Thumping City 1978 - Graeme Souness struck twice as we won 4-1 at Manchester City, with Ray Kennedy and Kenny Dalglish also on target, although City hit both the crossbar and post. Brian Kidd struck one of his six goals past the reds. Mickey’s milestones 2000 - Michael Owen netted his 49th and fiftieth League goals, in his 98th appearance, although we ended up drawing 3-3 with Southampton in our last game at The Dell, having led 3-0 with just seventeen minutes remaining. The brace took Owen to seven goals in as many games against the Saints. Sami Hyypiä grabbed our other goal. Marian Pahars netted twice with Tahar El Khalej also on target for the home side. Owen’s second strike was also the club’s 8,000th in all competitions. Digger’s ton 1995 - John Barnes’ second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was his hundredth reds strike, while Robbie Fowler netted his fiftieth reds goal. Digger also struck an own goal past David James in this match, which was our 500th away victory in the top flight. Colin Calderwood bagged the home side’s late consolation. Thumping wins 1950 - Billy Liddell bagged his fiftieth reds goal with Albert Stubbins also on target twice as we beat Sunderland 4-0 at Anfield. 1985 - Ian Rush bagged a brace with Steve Nicol, Jan Mølby and Craig Johnston also on the scoresheet as Ipswich Town left L4 having lost 5-0. Leeds, Leeds, Leeds We have faced Leeds United at Elland Road three times on this day in history, winning on two occasions. 1964 - Roger Hunt struck as we lost 4-2. Gordon Milne’s penalty was saved by Gary Sprake but Milne reacted quickly and scored from the rebound. Ron Yeats scored an own goal, with Don Weston netting the last of his four goals past us, with Billy Bremner and Johnny Giles each bagging one of their five strikes against the reds. 1975 - Ray Kennedy netted in a 3-0 win, with Ian Callaghan grabbing a late brace, with Brian Hall playing his 200th reds game. 1997 - Steve McManaman bagged his fiftieth reds goal and Karl-Heinz Riedle struck his first for the club to secure a 2-0 victory. He struck nine times in 37 outings while back in Portugal. 2015 – Welsh winger Harry Wilson joined Crewe Alexandra on loan, going on to play seven times for the Alex. On the same day, ex-reds forward Nabil El Zhar rescinded his contract with Levante U.D. after ten strikes in 114 games for Los Granotes. 2014 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was appointed Head Coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, leading the reigning champions to Israel’s first ever domestic treble before resigning in August 2015. 2007 - Argentine centre-back Gabriel Paletta left Anfield to join Boca Juniors. Rafa’s got his Dirk Kuyt 2006 - Dirk Kuyt signed from Feyenoord for £9m, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He helped the club to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his final season before moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for €1m in June 2012. Rushie returns 1988 - Ian Rush re-signed for the reds from Juventus for a club record £2.8m, having only spent one season with the Turin giants. In his second spell at Anfield, he struck 139 times in 329 games, winning a further League title, two FA Cups, League Cup and FA Charity Shield this time around. 1986 - Steve Staunton signed from Dundalk for £20,000. Happy birthdays 1988 - Centre-half Jack Hobbs was born in Portsmouth, signing officially with the reds in a £750,000 deal from Lincoln City on his seventeenth birthday. He signed from Rangers for £8,000 in August 1933, netting 26 times in fifty games before joining Queen Of The South in July 1935. Wembley disappointment We have twice played in the FA Charity Shield at Wembley on this day. 1984 - Bruce Grobbelaar scored an own goal to hand the trophy to our neighbours from across Stanley Park, with new signing Paul Walsh making his reds debut. 1990 - John Barnes equalised from the spot in our 1-1 draw with Manchester United, with the trophy therefore being shared. This game was arranged as construction work at Molineux meant that our opening League fixture scheduled for this day had to be postponed. 1986 - We beat an Irish International XI 2-1 in Cork, with Jan Mølby netting a penalty and Kevin MacDonald also on the scoresheet. Future red Ray Houghton scored for the Irish. The game was originally supposed to have taken place in 1985 as part of Cork’s 800th birthday celebrations but had to be re-arranged following the post-Heysel ban on where the reds could play in Europe. Nando on target 1999 - Fernando Morientes scored past his future clubmate Jerzy Dudek as Spain beat Poland 2-1 in a friendly in Warsaw. On the same day, Vegard Heggem won his eleventh cap as Norway beat Lithuania 1-0 in a friendly in Oslo. Øyvind Leonhardsen also played, winning his 62nd cap, and first as a Tottenham Hotspur player, just twelve days after leaving Anfield. The start of a dynasty 1974 - Bob Paisley was appointed Manager, a fortnight after Bill Shankly’s resignation. He became Britain’s most successful boss, leading us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five Charity Shields in just nine years in charge. In comes Milan 2001 - Milan Baroš signed from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m, although he was not granted a work permit and allowed to come to Anfield for another five months. He bagged 27 goals in 108 reds games, before moving to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and Worthington Cup. To the World Cup Final 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s 2-1 World Cup Semi-final defeat of Portugal at Wembley. He would shortly become the first red to claim football’s top honour while with the club. Double debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko both made their reds debuts as we won 3-1 at FBK Kaunas in the first leg of our Champions League Second Round qualifier, with Jamie Carragher nabbing his first goal for more than six years! Happy birthdays 1938 - Legendary centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958. His 245 League goals remain a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. 1966 - Hunt bagged both goals as England beat France 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game at Wembley, on his 28th birthday. Clubmate Ian Callaghan also played, winning only his second cap. 1948 - Reserves keeper Frank Lane was born in Wallasey. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. New signings 2005 - Peter Crouch signed from Southampton for £7m on a four-year contract. He failed to score in his first nineteen reds games, but went on to bag thirteen goals in his final thirty games of his first season, helping us to claim the FA Cup in May. He struck twice in 53 outings before moving on to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. Keeping no more 2007 - Jerzy Dudek signed for Real Madrid after 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left his hometown club to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 1928 - Post-war red Joe Shepherd was born. He never played a senior game for us. His two brothers, centre-forward Arthur and full-back Bill, were also Liverpool players at around the same time. Hark! It’s Harkness 1989 - Steve Harkness signed from Carlisle United for £75,000. He went on to make 139 appearances for the reds, bagging three goals before being sold to SL Benfica by Gérard Houllier for ten times his purchase price in March 1999. The Kop started life as a tinder bank, with Liverpool Echo journalist Ernest Edwards being responsible for comparing it to the Spion Kop, site of a famous battle in the Boer War. The name stuck! Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko made his comeback from his eye injury at SL Benfica a month earlier, while attempting to wear a set of protective goggles! New boss 1951 – Don Welsh took over as the club’s Manager. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and was in charge at Anfield for 232 games. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. European victories 1984 - A superb reds victory came as we won 4-1 at SL Benfica, then led by Sven-Göran Eriksson, in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie. Ronnie Whelan bagged a brace, as Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also got on the scoresheet, with Kenny Dalglish running the show. More international firsts and lasts 1891 - Future reds player, Manager and Director Matt McQueen won his second and final cap for Scotland as they beat Wales 4-3 in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1896 - Ex-reds left-back Duncan McLean won the first of his two caps as the Scots thumped Wales 4-0 in Dundee in the same competition, with Robert Neill bagging a brace as he won the first of two senior caps, and only one on loan with the reds from Hibernian. 2018 – Future red Cody Gakpo debuted for the Dutch Under-19’s as they thumped Norway 6-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Germany. On the same day, Adam Lewis debuted for England at the same level as they thumped Hungary 4-1 in a qualifier in North Macedonia. 2019 – Ibrahima Konaté debuted for France Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 with Germany in Essen, while fellow future red Dominik Szoboszlai made his senior bow for Hungary in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat in Slovakia, with ex-red Péter Gulácsi also featuring. Dominic Solanke won his first England Under-21’s cap as a Bournemouth player as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Poland at Ashton Gate, with Kamil Grabara in the visitors’ goal. On the same day, Ryan Babel won his first cap as a Fulham player as the Netherlands thumped Belarus 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Rotterdam, with skipper Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum both on target. Meanwhile, Fulham’s Harvey Elliott won his eighth and last cap for England Under-17’s before moving to Anfield, in their 5-2 thumping of Switzerland in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Also in international action 1904 – Fred Morris and Maurice Parry both played for Wales as they lost 1-0 to Ireland in the British International Championships in Bangor. 2963 – Ian Callaghan played for England Under-23’s in their goalless friendly draw with Yugoslavia at Old Trafford. 2007 – Adam Hammill played for England Under-19’s in their 1-0 defeat of Turkey in Doncaster, while future red Kolo Touré won his fiftieth senior cap as the Ivory Coast won a friendly 3-0 in Mauritius. 2008 – Future red Nikola Saric featured for the Danish Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Switzerland in a European Championships qualifier in Croatia. 2015 – Future red Caoimhín Kelleher played as the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s drew 2-2 with Greece in a European Championships qualifier in Poland. 2016 – Ben Woodburn featured as Wales Under-17’s lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Sweden in Croatia. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai played for Hungary Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Israel. -
Farewell to a legend 1978 - Ian Callaghan made his 640th and final League appearance, almost eighteen years after his debut. Unfortunately, this came in a 1-0 reverse at Coventry City. His final ever reds appearance came eight weeks later, in our European Cup Semi-final first leg at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah made his 200th League appearance for the reds as we lost 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We fell behind early when Hwang Hee-chan’s cross deflected off Joël Matip. Craig Dawson then netted on his debut, with Rúben Neves on target after the break. 2015 – Steven Gerrard played his 700th reds game as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Eiður Guðjohnsen opened the scoring from the spot after an hour, the last of his four goals against us, before Neil Danns was sent off for the Trotters. However, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho both struck late on past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan to send us through. We made it as far as Wembley Semi-final that season. 1920 – We beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in a top-flight match at Anfield that also counted towards the Lancashire Senior Cup, with inside-forward Harry Lewis bagging a brace. 1933 - We were held to a 3-3 draw at Burnden Park with Harold Taylor netting his first reds goal. Harold Barton also scored with Bob Done converting a spot-kick. Jack Milsom struck one of his seven goals past the reds, with Ray Westwood nabbing one of his nine and Willie Cook also on target. Signing on 1992 - István Kozma was signed from Dunfermline Athletic for £300,000. He was one of Graeme Souness’s least successful signings, making just ten first-team appearances in two seasons at Anfield, before returning to his native Hungary in June 1993. 1921 – Keeper Frank Mitchell signed from Everton for £1,250. He played eighteen times before joining Tranmere Rovers in June 1923 after failing to permanently displace the great Elisha Scott. Babb off 1995 - A Robbie Fowler goal gave us a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, our most recent game on this day. Phil Babb was sent off for a professional foul on Steve Stone. Future red Stan Collymore had opened the scoring with the first of his three goals against us. 1925 - We also travelled to the City Ground, when Jock McNab grabbed the only goal of the game. Youngsters see off the Shrews 2020 – Ro-Shaun Williams diverted a Neco Williams cross into his own net for the only goal of the game as the youngest ever side in the club’s history, aged nineteen years and 102 days, beat League One side Shrewsbury Town in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay at Anfield. Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley took charge of a team captained by Curtis Jones, becoming our youngest ever skipper at the age of nineteen and five days, with the first team taking the inaugural Premier League winter break. Midfielders Jake Cain and Elijah Dixon-Bonner, forward Joe Hardy and left-back Adam Lewis all debuted with forward Liam Millar making his only senior appearance, as defender Ki-Jana Hoever played his fourth and last reds game and midfielder Pedro Chirivella turned out for the eleventh and final time. Stalemates galore This day has proven to be a day of draws in our history, with nine of our 22 first-class matches ending in stalemate, including four of the last seven. 2019 – We were held 1-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Michail Antonio equalising inside half an hour, the latest of his five goals past us to date. This cut our lead at the top of the table to three points. 1984 - Our game at Sunderland ended goalless. 1967 - We also drew there, with Ron Yeats and Peter Thompson netting. John O’Hare struck the first of his six goals past us, with Bobby Kerr also scoring. 1989 - Goals from strike partners John Aldridge and Ian Rush helped us to a share of the points at Newcastle United. 1961 - Our most recent victory on this day was a 3-2 Second Division win at Sc***horpe United. Kevin Lewis, Jimmy Melia and Tommy Leishman were on target for the reds with Joe Bonson bagging his fifth and last goal against us and Barrie Thomas also netting. Derby despair 1939 - We lost the Anfield derby 3-0, with Tommy Lawton bagging two of his six goals past us to add to Stan Bentham’s goal. This win put the Blues back on top of the table, as they went on to claim the title for the fifth time that season. 2009 – Steven Gerrard had to go off injured after a quarter of an hour, with Lucas Leiva sent off in the second half as we went on to lose 1-0 at Goodison in our FA Cup Fourth Round Replay after extra time. Young substitute Dan Gosling bagged the winner with just two minutes remaining. We have also faced the Blues two more times in FA Cup action on this day in history, with Jack Parkinson on target in both encounters. 1905 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in a First Round tie and were then unfortunately knocked out in the replay. 1911 - We lost 2-1 in the Second Round at Goodison Park with Sandy Young grabbing the last two of his twelve derby goals. Also recently 2017 – We lost 2-0 at Hull City’s KCOM Stadium, thanks to goals from Alfred N’Diaye and future Blue Oumar Niasse. 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur. We took the lead early on, holding this until ten minutes from time when Victor Wanyama equalised. Loris Karius saved a penalty from Harry Kane. Salah gave us a stoppage-time lead, but there was still time for Kane to convert a spot-kick, one of his nine goals past us to date. God on the move 2009 - Robbie Fowler signed for North Queensland Fury, who play in the Australian A-League. He bagged nine goals in 26 outings before moving on to Perth Glory. Red debuts 1928 - We suffered our first home League defeat to West Ham United when Dick Edmed was on target from the spot as we lost 3-1, with forward Bob Clark making his debut. Jimmy Ruffell bagged two of his four strikes past the reds, with Vic Watson nabbing one of his nine goals against us. 1954 - Forward Derek Brownbill was born in Liverpool. He only made one senior reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City in September 1973, when he was replaced by our goalscorer, Brian Hall. After leaving Anfield in February 1975, he played more than 140 League games for Port Vale and Wigan Athletic, before emigrating to the USA to play for Cleveland Cobras. Mixed fortunes against the Potters We twice entertained Stoke on this day at the end of the nineteenth century. 1893 - We lost a friendly meeting 2-1, with John Miller on target. 1899 – Bill Goldie netted the only goal of our First Division encounter. International bows 1922 - Long-serving reds left-back Donald McKinlay won the first of his two caps for Scotland in a 2-1 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham. Right-half Maurice Parry made his international bow for the home side in the same game, while ex-red Ken Campbell was in the Scotland goal. 1928 – Elisha Scott played for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Wales in Belfast. Africans on target 2002 - Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both scored in Senegal’s 2-0 African Cup of Nations Quarter-final defeat of DR Congo in Mali, with this being Diao’s first strike for his country. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 win over Egypt. 2006 - Song and future red Kolo Touré both converted in a penalty shoot-out after Cameroon’s Quarter-final with Ivory Coast in Cairo ended in a 1-1 draw. Song skippered his country to a 12-11 victory on penalties. 2008 - Rigobert was captain again as they beat Tunisia 3-2 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals once more. 2012 – Future red Touré played in the Ivory Coast’s 3-0 defeat of host nation Equatorial Guinea in a Quarter-final in Malabo. 2015 – Touré featured again as Ivory Coast beat Congo DR 3-1 in the Semi-final in Equatorial Guinea. Almost in charge 2008 - Steve Staunton was appointed Assistant Manager of Leeds United under Gary McAllister. He remained at Elland Road for ten months, leaving in the wake of Gary Mac’s sacking. 2010 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Villarreal reserves, but only stayed in the role for four months. Final caps 2000 - Reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his third and final cap as a reds player, as a substitute in a 3-2 Nordic Cup defeat of the Faroe Islands in La Manga. 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Molde player, his eleventh in total, as Norway beat Bermuda 3-1 in a friendly in Hamilton. Fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. 1976 - Joey Jones won his fourth and final Under-23’s cap for Wales, and only one as a red, in their 3-2 defeat by Scotland in Wrexham. Future red Alan Hansen won his third and last cap at this level as a substitute in the same game. Other reds games 1956 – We won a Second Division match 2-1 at Middlesbrough despite falling behind to the last of Lindy Delapenha’s four goals against the reds. John Evans and Billy Liddell scored our goals. 1950 – We drew 2-2 at Derby County with Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins on target. John Morris scored one of his seven goals past us, with Billy Steel bagging the last of his four. 1922 – Harry Chambers netted twice as we won 2-0 at Birmingham City. Award winners 2008 - Kenny Dalglish won the Bill Shankly Memorial award from the Liverpool Echo at the Echo Arena. 2013 - Centre-half Martin Škrtel was named Slovakia’s Player of the Year for 2012, winning this award for the fourth time. On the move 2019 - Norwich City announced that former Academy midfielder Adam Phillips' contract had been cancelled by mutual consent. He moved on to Burnley six months later. 2021 – Defender Jarell Quansah signed pro terms with the reds. He has captained the Under-18’s, making it onto the first-team bench on two occasions so far. Also in international action 2016 – Future red Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-16’s as they drew a friendly 3-3 with Germany in Vila Real, before triumphing 5-4 on penalties. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they lost 2-1 to Uruguay in a final phase game at the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” in Venezuela. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä captained Finland as they were thumped 5-1 in a friendly in Japan, with ex-red Jari Litmanen also featuring. 1996 – Future red Vegard Heggem played for Norway Under-21’s in their 2-1 defeat by the USA in Jacksonville, Florida. -
Souey’s debut 1978 - Graeme Souness made his reds bow as a David Johnson goal gave us victory at West Bromwich Albion. 1933 - We also travelled to the Baggies, losing 2-0 in our FA Cup Third Round tie. Billy Richardson bagged one of his nine goals against the reds, with Stan Wood netting the first of his five past us. Heading to Wembley 1981 – Ray Kennedy netted the only goal of the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final after a contested free-kick late on at a wet and windy Maine Road, with Manchester City’s Kevin Reeves earlier having a strike ruled out for an apparent handball. We drew the return to reach our second Final in the competition. In comes Redders 1991 - Jamie Redknapp signed from Bournemouth for £350,000, going on to strike 41 times in 308 first-team appearances. Although he only won one winners’ medal in his time at Anfield, the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, he was a popular member of the squad, and was club captain during the historic treble season eight years ago, going up to lift the FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium with Robbie Fowler. He moved on to Tottenham Hotspur in a free transfer in April 2002, retiring from football in the summer of 2005 after a brief spell at Southampton. Beating Spurs 2006 - Harry Kewell volleyed the only goal of the game as Tottenham Hotspur left Anfield with their customary defeat. Paul Stalteri was sent off for the visitors, while Stephen Warnock was completing his half century of reds games. The crowd of 44,983 was the largest to date since Anfield became an all-seater stadium. Another debutant 1967 - Ian Ross debuted as a substitute for the injured Ian Callaghan in our 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, after Peter Thompson had scored the only goal of the game. 1989 - We also visited Hillsborough, coming from 2-0 down to draw, with Steve Nicol and John Aldridge getting on the scoresheet within a minute of each other. Hatters fail to show 1987 - Our FA Cup Third Round replay with Luton Town at Anfield was postponed after the Hatters failed to turn up on time! Although the country was suffering with bad weather, the Anfield pitch was deemed playable and Luton were informed that the match was definitely going ahead. However, they did not allow enough time to make the journey and so the game had to be called off, despite many of their fans managing to arrive. Things got even worse for Mark Lawrenson, who crashed his car driving home from Anfield after skidding on black ice. The game was eventually staged two weeks later, ending goalless after a full two hours, but we lost the second replay 3-0 at Kenilworth Road. Ton up in the cup 1911 – Sam Bowyer’s second goal was our hundredth in the FA Cup as we beat Gainsborough Trinity 3-2 in a First Round tie at Anfield as right-back Alf West played his 141st and last reds game. Arthur Goddard added our third but, unfortunately, we were knocked out at Everton at the next hurdle. Most recently 2023 – We lost 3-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion, with all the goals coming after thee break. Solly March bagged a brace before Danny Welbeck completed the scoring. 2018 – We beat Manchester City in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handing us an early lead. Leroy Sané equalised before the break with one of his four goals past us to date, but Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah all struck during the second half as we led 4-1 with less than ten minutes remaining. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gündogan then netted to ensure a nervy finish as we inflicted City’s first League defeat of the season on them. This was the first of the latter’s four strikes against us. 2012 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke City. Dick dies 1933 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson died. He joined the reds in January 1920, striking thirty times in 82 outings, including two hat-tricks, helping us to the League title in 1923 before leaving for Stoke in February 1925. He was noted for his overhead bicycle kicks. Management moves 1969 – Former reds skipper Sir Matt Busby announced that he would resign as Manchester United boss at the end of the season, which he did in June of that year after leading our deadly rivals to the European Cup, five League titles, two FA Cups and three FA Charity Shields. 1998 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Manager of Newcastle United. He led the Toon to thirteenth place in his one full season in charge but was sacked just two unbeaten games into the following season. 2004 - Roy Hodgson was sacked as Manager of United Arab Emirates, having been in charge since April 2002. 2013 – Short-lived Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was appointed Bristol City boss. He was sacked ten months later, having failed to keep them in the Championship followed by a poor start to the following campaign. Five different competitions We have played first-class fixtures in five different competitions on this day over the years. 1893 - Our first game came when we held West Manchester to a goalless draw in the Lancashire League. We have also won three FA Cup games and one League Cup match on this day, and played eleven League matches, although we have only won four of these. 1986 - A brace from Ian Rush and a Mark Lawrenson goal handed us a 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Rush’s second strike being his 150th for the club. Kevin MacDonald broke his arm in a collision with Spurs’ Steve Perryman. However, he was back in action inside six weeks. Veteran keeper Pat Jennings played his final game for Spurs. Alan’s last 1961 - Alan Arnell played his 75th and final reds game as we lost 3-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in a Second Division encounter, with Alan A’Court grabbing our consolation. Smiling again 1922 - Forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck his fiftieth reds goal as we beat Bradford City 2-1 at Anfield on our way to our third League title. Dick Forshaw added our second as Dickie Bond struck the last of his four goals against the reds, while forward Billy Lacey was playing his 200th game for the club. 1928 – Chambers bagged his 151st and final reds strike, the only goal of our FA Cup Third Round meeting with Third Division North side Darlington at Anfield. Rushie in red again 2003 - Ian Rush stepped out in Liverpool training gear for the first time in eight years, having been appointed as a part-time specialist striking coach. He said, “I will get as much satisfaction watching these lads score as I did when I was scoring myself.” However, he did not get the opportunity to do so for very long. Old gold disappointment We have twice played Wolverhampton Wanderers on this day in history, without winning. 1984 - Wolves won 1-0 despite being bottom of the table, thanks to an early Carl Mardenborough header, his only ever goal for the club, to secure victory at Anfield for the first time in 33 years. 1899 - We held them to a goalless draw at Molineux. He kept goal for them on a century of occasions before joining Portsmouth in August 2006. 2010 – Defender Jon Otsemobor joined Southampton on a free transfer from Norwich City, after two goals in 104 games for the Canaries. On the same day, ex-red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game 1-0 to Algeria in Angola. 2014 - Luis García retired from playing, although he returned to the game six months later with Indian Super League side Atlético de Kolkata. 2021 – Left-back Adam Lewis joined Plymouth Argyle on loan, netting once in twenty games for the League One side. Jordan the best 2020 – Jordan Henderson was named as the 2019 BT England Men’s Player of the Year. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Momo Sissoko announced his retirement from playing. He had signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times and scoring just once before moving on to Juventus for £8.2m in January 2008. Other reds games 1995 – Adam Tanner struck the only goal of Ipswich Town’s visit to Anfield 1939 – We came from behind to win 3-1 at Charlton Athletic with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Harry Eastham also on target. 1920 – Harry Lewis and Jackie Sheldon netted as we beat South Shields 2-0 in an FA Cup First Round replay in L4. Foy on target 2002 - Robbie Foy struck for Scotland Under-17’s as they won a friendly 2-0 in Malta. Toni’s first 2017 – Toni Silva won his first cap as a Levadiakos player, as Guinea-Bissau drew 1-1 with Gabon in an African Cup of Nations Finals group game. Other internationals 2022 – Naby Keïta and Sadio Mané were both captains as Senegal and Guinea drew 0-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Cameroon. 2013 – Future red Kolo Touré played for the Ivory Coast as they beat Egypt 4-2 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi. 2011 – Ex-red Harry Kewell played as Australia drew 1-1 with South Korea in an AFC Asian Cup Finals group game in Qatar. -
A-L-B-E-R-T, Albert Stubbins is the man for me 1919 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins was born in Wallsend. He signed from Newcasle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946 and struck 83 times in 178 reds matches, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade, He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. Forwards moving in 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri signed from Stoke City for £13.75m, notching eight times in 63 outings before moving to Olympique Lyonnais for €6m in August 2021, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup, as well as remaining on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. 2012 - Fabio Borini signed from Roma for £10.4m to become new boss Brendan Rodgers’ first capture. His first campaign was badly interrupted by injuries as he notched twice in twenty reds games, before spending the next season on loan at Sunderland. However, he only netted once in a further eighteen outings before joining the Mackems permanently for £8m in August 2015. On the same day, Maxi Rodríguez left the club to join Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys back in his native Argentina after seventeen goals in 73 outings since arriving for free from Club Atlético de Madrid in January 2010. 2007 - Ryan Babel signed from Ajax for £11.5m. He proved a very useful asset in his first season, especially from the bench, as he equalled Djibril Cissé’s club record of seven strikes in a season as a substitute. However, subsequent campaigns were far less productive, and he struck a total of 22 times in 146 appearances before being sold to German side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for £6m in January 2011. Bellamy born 1979 - Craig Bellamy was born in Cardiff. He arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006 with his one season in his first spell in L4 only being a partial success. He grabbed nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. He was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m in July 2007, then the record fee paid by the Irons. He returned to Anfield on a free transfer from Manchester City last August, netting nine times in 37 games and helping us to claim the Carling Cup before joining his hometown club for free in August 2012. On the same day, recent Fitness Coach Eduardo Parra García was born in Vigo. He began working in football as a fitness coach for teams in his native Galicia, before joining Real Club Celta de Vigo in 2007. He later followed Rafael Benítez to Internazionale. Happy birthday Vedgy 1975 - Vegard Heggem was born in Trondheim in Norway. His five years at Anfield were ravaged by hamstring injuries, after becoming the only signing made by the joint management team of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier, for £3.5m in July 1998. He could only make 65 appearances before being released in June 2003, scoring three times. Kicking off early 2005 - We started the season proper in July for the first time ever, beating Total Network Solutions 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League first qualifying round tie, thanks to Steven Gerrard’s first treble. Pepe Reina and Bolo Zenden both made their first-class reds debuts, in front of our biggest home European attendance since we hosted Nottingham Forest in September 1978. World Cup despair 2014 – Ex-red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina lost the World Cup Final 1-0 to Germany in Rio de Janeiro. Starting off well 2013 – Iago Aspas netted in his first reds outing as we thumped Preston North End 4-0 to claim the Shankly Shield at Deepdale. Forward Luis Alberto, centre-half Kolo Touré and keepers Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward also played their first reds games. He was only at Molineux for a year, without making the first team, before moving to non-League Stafford Rangers. 2020 – Left-back Adam Lewis signed a new contract with the reds. He had made his senior debut in an FA Cup Fourth Round replay win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield in February 2020, spending the 2021/22 season on loan at Livingston. Old boys lose their title 2003 - Reigning champions Liverpool bowed out of the Masters Tournament after finishing third in the North West Series of the legends football in Manchester. The reds team consisted of John Aldridge, goalkeeper Bob Bolder, John Durnin, Gary Gillespie, Ray Houghton, Alan Kennedy, Jan Mølby, Phil Neal, Michael Thomas and Ronnie Whelan. On the move 2009 - John Welsh signed for Tranmere Rovers, having been released by Hull City the previous month. He bagged eleven goals in 149 appearances while at Prenton Park, moving on to Preston North End in May 2012. 2007 – Left-back Paul Konchesky joined Fulham from West Ham United for £2m, after two goals in seventy outings for the Hammers. 2011 - Konchesky was sold to Leicester City for £1.5m, having played just eighteen reds games since his £3.5m capture from Fulham the previous August. 1911 – Right-back Alf West left Anfield again, this time moving on to Notts County. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903. In international action 1999 - Brad Friedel played for the USA as they met Derby County in a friendly in Denver. 2004 - Arnaud Bühler played for Switzerland Under-19’s as they drew 1-1 with Italy in a European Championships qualifier. Final joy and despair 2010 - Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso helped Spain to a 1-0 defeat of the Netherlands in the World Cup Final in Johannesburg, with Dirk Kuyt on the losing side. 2021 – England drew 1-1 with Italy in the European Championships Final at Wembley, but lost out on penalties. Jordan Henderson came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, with ex-red Raheem Sterling also in action. In comes Dom 2017 – Forward Dominic Solanke signed from Chelsea, finally netting his first senior goal in his 27th and last outing as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield in May 2018, moving on to Bournemouth for £19m in January 2019. Departures 2008 – Peter Crouch was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m, after 42 goals in 134 outings since his £7m capture from Southampton in July 2005. He netted sixteen times in 49 games in his second spell with Pompey before moving back to Tottenham Hotspur for around £9m a year later. 1933 – Full-back Tommy Lucas left the reds for Clapton Orient. He had signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. 2016 – Right-back Fred Perry died. He signed from Worthing in July 1954, but made just one senior appearance before joining Sittingbourne in January 1957. Happy birthday Titi 1972 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was born in Conakry, Guinea. He scored ten times in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died in October of that year. He was sold to the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. 1931 - Centre-half Fred Tomley was born in Liverpool. He signed from Litherland in September 1953 but only made two senior appearances before joining Chester in July 1955. More red arrivals 2008 – Brazilian keeper Diego Cavalieri signed from Palmeiras for £3.5m. He only made ten senior appearances, keeping four clean sheets, but sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved to Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. 1934 – Keeper Stanley Kane signed on at Anfield. He only played six first-team games before leaving for Southend United in April 1936. Off the mark 2019 - Rhian Brewster scored his first two senior goals as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 6-0 at Prenton Park in our opening pre-season friendly, with Bobby Duncan netting while playing for the senior side for the first time. Nathaniel Clyne, Curtis Jones and Divock Origi also scored as forward Paul Glatzel, keeper Vítězslav Jaroš and left-backs Yasser Larouci and Adam Lewis featured for the first-team for the first time. Also debuting at this level was keeper Daniel Atherton, who actually came on as a forward! New club channel 2007 - The launch of the club’s own TV channel, LFC TV was announced. Heading off 2006 - Dietmar Hamann officially joined Bolton Wanderers for £500,000. However, he moved on to Manchester City before the ink was dry on his contract. Meanwhile, Chris Kirkland joined Wigan Athletic on loan. He signed permanently in October 2006, playing 134 times for the Latics in total, again suffering from injuries before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in May 2012. He played 27 times in his two seasons at Bramall Lane, taking over as the boss the following June. 2019 – Midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Walsall from Indonesian side Persatuan Sepakbola Mitra Kukar on a free transfer, netting once in 28 outings in his first campaign with the Saddlers. 2014 – Forward Dani Pacheco joined Real Betis Balompié from AD Alcorcón, playing 25 times as they were promoted back to La Liga, moving on to Getafe in July 2016. On the same day, defender Gareth Roberts signed for Chester, playing 47 times before being released at the end of the season. 2000 - Steve Harkness left Sheffield Wednesday, joining Conference side Chester City on a free transfer, under the management of his former Anfield team-mate Mark Wright. New deals 2009 – Nabil El Zhar signed a new contract until 2012. The French-born Moroccan international struck once in 32 reds games, moving on to Spanish side Levante U.D. in August 2011. 2002 - John Arne Riise signed an extension to his Liverpool contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He signed from AS Monaco for £4m in June 2001 and netted 31 times in his 348 first-team appearances, at either left-back or on the left side of midfield, but left for Roma for the same fee he was signed for in June 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Bolo at last 1998 - Bolo Zenden grabbed his first international goal, while winning his last cap as a PSV Eindhoven player, and tenth in total. He notched twice in 85 games for the Pirates, before moving on to Wimbledon in July 1987. 2004 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Viking F.K. Stavanger. He led them to ninth and fifth place finishes before taking charge of Finland in January 2006. 2011 - Lazar Marković signed a five-year deal as a professional for Partizan, going on to net fourteen times in 65 games, helping them to claim two League titles before joining SL Benfica for £20m three years later. On the same day, future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Stoke City, playing 21 times without scoring in his one season with the Potters. 2015 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum joined Newcastle United from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £14.5m. Happy days 2009 – Xabi Alonso married Nagore Aranburu in San Sebastián. 2013 – Ex-reserves midfielder Tom Ince, Paul’s son, became a father for the first time when his partner, Charly Cottrell, gave birth to Halle Rae at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, where Ince himself had been born 21 years earlier.
