Happy birthday Walshie
1962 - Paul Walsh was born in Plumstead. He signed from Luton Town for £700,000 in May 1984 and struck 37 times in 112 reds games, winning a League title and the Screen Sport Super Cup before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £500,000 in February 1988.
1879 – Bobby Robinson was born in Sunderland. He moved to the reds from his hometown club for £500 in February 1904. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, and also helped us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913.

A double treble
1980 - Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott both scored trebles as we thumped Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 10-1 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup by 11-2 on aggregate. This was Souness’s first treble for the reds, which included a penalty. Sammy Lee and Ray Kennedy were also on target, with David Fairclough bagging a brace, with the first being his fiftieth reds strike.

Beating the Blues
2011 – We won 2-0 at Everton, with Jack Rodwell sent off half-way through the first half for a late tackle on Luis Suárez. Dirk Kuyt had a penalty saved just before the break, while Charlie Adam struck the crossbar. However, we eventually triumphed thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Suárez.

Off the mark
2008 - Robbie Keane finally scored his first reds goal, in his eleventh outing, to put us three ahead in our 3-1 Champions League defeat of PSV Eindhoven at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard bagging his hundredth goal for the club, courtesy of a 25-yard free-kick at the Kop end. We had opened the scoring through Dirk Kuyt’s tenth goal in Europe, which ensured we reached a century of goals in the competition under Rafael Benítez, in what was his 250th game in charge overall.
1892 - Outside-right Tom Wyllie bagged his first reds goal as we beat West Manchester 3-1 in a Lancashire League encounter in L4, with Jock Smith and John Miller also on target.

Anfield hat-tricks galore
1904 – Birthday boy Bobby Robinson scored all our goals as we thumped Leicester Fosse 4-0 in a Second Division fixture.
1906 – Jack Parkinson scored three as we beat Manchester United 4-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game, with Sam Raybould also on target.
1927 - Willie Devlin scored four goals and Gordon Hodgson also netted a hat-trick as we trounced Portsmouth 8-2 at Anfield, our first ever meeting with Pompey, with left-winger George Pither nabbing the other, his only senior reds strike. Left-half Tom Bromilow was playing his 300th reds game. We had gone in 6-0 up at half-time, as well as having two goals ruled out, for handball and offside.

1994 - Steve McManaman was denied his only reds treble while making his hundredth League appearance when his third goal in our 4-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield was later credited as a Des Walker own goal. Ian Rush equalised after the break after we had gone in behind to an Ian Nolan goal.
2022 - Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick for the visitors as Brighton & Hove Albion held us to a 3-3 draw in Roberto de Zerbi’s first game in charge of the Seagulls. We went two goals behind before a Roberto Firmino brace brought us level. Adam Webster put through his own net, but Trossard had the final word.

Also recently
2017 – Philippe Coutinho scored in his third consecutive game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Rafael Benítez’s Newcastle United.
1988 – Newcastle United won a top-flight fixture 2-1 at Anfield, despite Gary Gillespie heading us into an early lead. John Hendrie equalised after half an hour, with Mirandinha converting a late penalty to secure the win.

2016 – We won 2-1 at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium, falling behind to an early Leroy Fer goal. Roberto Firmino headed in after the break, with James Milner securing the victory from the spot after Firmino was felled.
2020 – We lost 5-4 on penalties to Arsenal after our League Cup Fourth Round tie ended goalless behind closed doors at Anfield. Midfielder Marko Grujić and winger Harry Wilson both made their final appearances for the club. James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum, Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones all converted their spot-kicks, with Divock Origi and Wilson seeing their efforts saved as Adrián was only able to keep out one of the Gunners’ penalties.

Brothers in arms
1867 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He signed from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and made 61 reds appearances, bagging eighteen goals, helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons, before joining Derby County in July 1895. His brother Matt played 103 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s.
1898 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth was born in Bootle. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in January 1918, turning pro in May 1919. He struck three times in 55 reds games, often playing alongside his brother, centre-half Walter. He moved on to Leicester City in June 1924 for £250.

Billy’s farewell
1921 – Forward Billy Matthews played his ninth and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea, with Dick Forshaw on target.

National fervour on Merseyside
1938 - Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was at Goodison, a few days after returning from Munich with the famous “piece of paper” signed by Hitler that he felt would avert war. The crowd responded by singing the National Anthem, but Willie Fagan’s penalty could not prevent us losing 2-1 to Everton.

We have lost two other League derbies on this day in history.
1932 - We were beaten 3-1 at Goodison with Gordon Gunson netting our consolation. Dixie Dean bagged two of his nineteen goals past us, with Ted Critchley also on target for the home side as keeper Elisha Scott played his 400th League game for us.
1910 - We faced the Blues at Anfield, going down 2-0 as they kept a clean sheet for the fourth consecutive occasion in this fixture, a first for any club at Anfield. Sandy Young netted one of his twelve derby strikes, with Harry Makepeace also scoring.

A millennium at Anfield
1955 - Alan A’Court and Geoff Twentyman both struck braces as we beat Plymouth Argyle 4-1 in L4 in a Second Division encounter, our thousandth home League game.

Carra's century
2000 - Jamie Carragher played his hundredth League game as we lost 3-0 at Chelsea, with their first score being an own goal from Sander Westerveld. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink bagged one of his seven goals against the reds, with Eiður Guðjohnsen also on the scoresheet.
1921 - We also faced the West London outfit, when Dick Forshaw struck in a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

1949 – Albert Stubbins struck in his hundredth League game for the reds as we won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion.

Disappointment at Old Trafford
1995 - Robbie Fowler struck twice as Eric Cantona’s comeback game after a nine-month ban ended all square. Nicky Butt opened the scoring, with Cantona converting a penalty to level the scores, one of his five goals past us.
1977 - We also visited Manchester United, losing 2-0 thanks to goals from Lou Macari and Sammy McIlroy.

Zico senior missed
1983 - Phil Neal missed his first League game since December 1974 as we went down 1-0 at home to Sunderland, with Gary Rowell on target from the spot.

Future reds in action
1924 - Forward Gordon Hodgson and keeper Arthur Riley both played for a South Africa XI that beat a reds side of mainly reserves at Anfield, with defender Balaert Shears twice drawing the reds level. Hodgson and Riley would both later sign for the club.

Under the lights
1958 - We beat Everton 2-1 at home in the first leg of the short-lived Floodlight Challenge Cup, with Alan Arnell and Jimmy Melia on the scoresheet. We won the return leg 3-2 to retain the trophy.

Also in Europe
2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Swiss side Sion in a UEFA Europa League game at Anfield, with Adam Lallana firing the reds an early lead before we were pegged back.
2014 – We lost 1-0 at Basel in our UEFA Champions League group encounter, with Marco Streller on target after the break.
1974 - Ray Kennedy netted the only goal of the game at the Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo as we beat Norwegian amateurs Strømsgodset to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup by a huge 12-0 aggregate scoreline. This was Kevin Keegan’s first game back after his lengthy suspension following his dismissal in that season’s FA Charity Shield.

In Notts
1908 - Forward Sam Bowyer grabbed the first of his sixteen reds goals in a 5-1 top-flight thumping at Nottingham Forest, our worst ever defeat to the East Midlands outfit. Left-back Tom Rogers was badly injured in this game, not returning to the side for another eleven months. Grenville Morris struck two of his six goals past us, with Bill Hooper also nabbing a brace and Enoch West scoring one of his eight goals against the reds.

We have faced Notts County three times on this day in history in the top flight, winning twice and drawing the other match.
1898 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield.
1903 - George Fleming converted a penalty and Jack Cox also netted in a 4-2 defeat at Trent Bridge. Albert Green bagged two of his four goals against us, with Percy Humphreys netting one of his six, and future Arsenal boss Herbert Chapman also on the scoresheet.
1925 - Tom Bromilow and Jimmy Walsh struck as we won 2-1 at Meadow Lane.

International beginnings and end
2001 – Future reds Andy Lonergan, Jermaine Pennant and Gary O’Neil all debuted for England Under-19’s as they beat Iceland 2-0 in a friendly in York.
2012 – Left-back Brad Smith won his second and last cap for England Uder-19’s in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw with Ukraine in Estonia.

Internationals on target
2007 – Dani Pacheco bagged a treble on his debut for Spain Under-17’s in their 6-0 thumping of San Marino in a European Championships qualifier in Andorra.
1949 – Future reds forward Sammy Smyth bagged a brace as Ireland lost 8-2 to Scotland in a World Cup qualifier that also counted for the British International Championships at Windsor Park.

On the move
1999 - Steve Nicol was named as interim head coach of New England Revolution for the first time, following the sacking of Walter Zenga. He remained in charge at the Gillette Stadium until October 2011.
2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Momo Sissoko signed for Indian Super League side Pune City, scoring twice in thirteen games before joining Ternana in Italy in February 2017.
2019 - Vitor Matos joined as Elite Development Coach, arriving from Porto.
2021 – Ex-reds forward Daniel Sturridge signed for Perth Glory but was unable to score in just six appearances as he again struggled with injuries.

Other reds games
1966 – We won 3-2 at Aston Villa as future red Tony Hateley scored the last two of his five goals against the reds, including one from the spot. Ian St. John, Ian Callaghan and Bobby Graham scored our goals.
1960 – Johnny Wheeler netted the only goal of Derby County’s visit to Anfield for a Second Division fixture.

1992 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley made his reserves debut, as a substitute for Steve Nicol in a 2-0 defeat at Leeds United.
