Terry Mac off the mark 1975 - Terry McDermott netted his first reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Burnley. He went on to bag 81 in total in 329 reds games. Ray Clemence was playing his 300th reds game. 1980 - We won at White Hart Lane in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, with Terry McDermott scoring the only goal of the game when he knocked the ball up in the air with his left foot, and volleyed it home with his right, a strike that was later voted the BBC’s Goal of the Season. 1913 - We also visited Spurs, losing by the same score in a top-flight encounter, our fourth straight defeat in North

Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss.

Aldo’s debut 1987 - John Aldridge made his reds debut as a substitute for goalscorer Craig Johnston in our 2-2 League draw at Aston Villa, with Paul Walsh and Villa’s Paul Elliott also netting and Mark Lawrenson putting through his own net. Aldo went on to net 63 goals in 104 reds games. Another win at Camp Nou 2007 - We came from behind to win 2-1 at Barcelona in the first leg of our Champions League Round of 16 meeting. The game was played in the aftermath of a stormy bonding trip to Portugal, with Craig Bellamy allegedly attacking John Arne Riise with a golf club. Perhaps inevitabl

Red hat-tricks 1966 - Roger Hunt netted three times in just nineteen minutes in the second half of our League game at home to Sunderland. He actually scored all the goals in our 4-0 victory that day. 1947 - Cyril Done grabbed his second hat-trick of the season, with Willie Fagan scoring the other two, as we jumped from seventh in the table to second with a 5-0 home win over Grimsby Town in snowy conditions. Wing-half Stan Palk made the first of his thirteen senior reds appearances in this game. 1944 - Done struck another treble as we trounced Crewe Alexandra 8-0 in a Wartime League match

Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Daniel Sturridge joined Bolton Wande

Red debutants 1984 - Kevin MacDonald made his reds bow as we beat Luton Town 1-0 at home, with John Wark on target. 2013 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith came off the bench to make his debut as we lost 2-1 at Chelsea with Martin Škrtel handing us an early lead. Trebles galore 1977 - Terry McDermott grabbed a hat-trick as we thumped Hamburger SV 6-0 at Anfield in the second leg of the UEFA Super Cup, to win the trophy 7-1 on aggregate, with Phil Thompson, David Fairclough and Kenny Dalglish also on target. This game marked Kevin Keegan’s first return to Anfield after leaving for Germany in the summer, and he was roundly booed whenever he touched the ball. 2017 – Philippe Coutinho scored three times as we trounced Spartak Moskva 7-0 at Anfield, our second victory of the UEFA Champions League group stage that season. Reds born 1946 - Brian Hall was born in Glasgow. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of P

Double reds debutants 1974 - Reds legends Terry McDermott and Phil Neal both made their reds debuts as we held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park. Four for Jack 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged all four goals in our 4-1 win at Derby County. This was the second of his three hat-tricks in consecutive games. His third goal was his fiftieth reds strike, while Raich Carter’s late consolation was the last of his six strikes against the reds. Billy’s record 1957 – Billy Liddell played his 431st League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division encounter 3-1 at Ipswich Town, a ne

A roasting for the Turks 2007 - We secured the record ever victory in the Champions League by any club when we trounced Beşiktaş JK 8-0 at Anfield, with the lead only 2-0 at half time. Yossi Benayoun bagged a hat-trick, with his first strike being our 500th in Europe. Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel netted twice each with Steven Gerrard also on target. Sami Hyypiä played his hundredth club European game, while Babel became our hundredth different scorer in continental competition. This was Rafael Benítez’s fiftieth Champions League game in charge of the reds. It was announced on the same da

The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. John Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged

Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. Willkommen Jürgen 2015 - Jürgen Klopp was appointed reds boss following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. He has so far led us to UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid, our first League title in thirty years, FIFA Club World cup and UEFA Super Cup as well as three other cup finals, generating a great rapport with the crowd. On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa.
