This was the third consecutive game that Crouchie had notched in, inside a week. Gary Mac honoured 2001 - Gary McAllister was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List for his services to football. He had been a professional footballer for twenty years, winning the League title while with Leeds United, as well as helping the reds to a famous treble earlier that year. 2008 - Kenny Dalglish

He signed from Skelmersdale United in May 1970 and made 475 appearances for the reds, scoring 76 times and helping us to win four League titles, two European Cups, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, before moving to the USA to sign for Minnesota Kicks in 1981. He later returned to the club in 1989 as Youth Development Officer, becoming Academy Director before leaving at the end of the 2006/07 season. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa.

A European treble 1984 - John Wark bagged a hat-trick as we beat Polish champions Lech Poznań 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Second Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate, having also scored our goal in the away leg. Paul Walsh was also on target that night. Debutants 1903 - Jack Parkinson scored on his reds debut in our 2-1 win at Small Heath, with left-half George Fleming also on the scoresheet, scoring from the rebound after his own spot-kick was saved. 1926 - We also beat Birmingham City, as they were by then known, in the top flight with Vic Wright and Phil Taylor nettin

A black day for the club 1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şah

Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also enter

Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them.

More Euro glory 2019 – We claimed the UEFA Super Cup for the fourth time, beating Chelsea 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out in Istanbul after our meeting ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, and 2-2 after extra time. Olivier Giroud scored the seventh of his eight goals past us to date in the first half, with a Sadio Mané brace either side of the full-time whistle putting us ahead. Jorginho converted a debatable penalty, before the match was decided from twelve yards. Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all scored before Adrián saved from Tammy Abraham. Joël M
