UEFA Cup glory
1976 - We claimed the UEFA Cup for the second time as we drew 1-1 at Club Brugge to triumph 4-3 on aggregate. Kevin Keegan equalised just five minutes after Raoul Lambert’s penalty had put the Belgians ahead, following Tommy Smith’s handball. This result came about despite Bob Paisley being without seven first-team players for ten of the fifteen days between the preceding final League game of the season and this match, due to the British International Championships.

Carra’s farewell
2013 – Jamie Carragher played his 737th and last reds game as Philippe Coutinho struck the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to Anfield. Carra nearly rounded his career off with a rare goal as he struck the upright with a long-distance shot. Pepe Reina appeared for the 394th and last time as Stewart Downing also played his final game for the club, his 91st, while winger Jordon Ibe made his reds bow.

In comes Sami
1999 - Sami Hyypiä signed from Willem II for £2.6m. He made 464 reds appearances, many as captain, and notched 35 times, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups before joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen in June 2009. That same day we beat Sunderland, the hundredth Football League champions, 3-2 at the Stadium of Light in the Football League 100th Championship Challenge. Robbie Fowler scored from the spot, with Jamie Redknapp and Paul Ince also on target.

Ton-up
2001 - Sami Hyypiä and Sander Westerveld each played their hundredth reds game in our 4-0 win at Charlton Athletic, a result that took us into the new format of the Champions League for the first time as we ended the season third. After surviving a barrage of Addicks attacks in the first half, a brace from Robbie Fowler and goals from Danny Murphy and Michael Owen gave us the win.
1981 - Our only other first-class game on this day saw Ray Kennedy nab the only goal to see off Manchester City at Anfield, as we ended a disappointing League campaign in fifth place. Howard Gayle had earlier headed onto a post from a Jimmy Case corner, while making his fifth and final reds appearance.

Most recently
2021 – Centre-half Nat Phillips bagged his only reds goal to date as we won 3-0 at Burnley in front of just 3,500 fans due to the relaxed COVID lockdown. Roberto Firmino had opened the scoring before the break, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also on target.

Players of the season
2008 – Fernando Torres was named as the club’s Player of the Season after a vote on the official website. Ryan Babel claimed the Young Player award, with Krisztián Németh named as the Reserves Player of the Season.

1979 - Alan Hansen and future red John Wark both made their Scotland debuts in a 3-0 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships at Ninian Park. All the goals were scored by ex-red John Toshack, while Graeme Souness and ex-red Joey Jones also played, with Kenny Dalglish skippering the Scots. On the same day, Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Phil Thompson all played in European Championships qualifiers.

Double England debutants
1971 - Reds defensive pairing Larry Lloyd and Tommy Smith both made their England bows in a goalless draw with Wales at Wembley in the British International Championships. This was Tommy’s only full cap, while Emlyn Hughes, Chris Lawler and John Toshack all also played.
1973 – Emlyn Hughes faced future red Kenny Dalglish as Scotland beat England 1-0 at Wembley in the same competition.

Final caps
1978 - Joey Jones won his final cap as a reds player when Wales beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in the British International Championships in Wrexham.
1986 - He won his 72nd and final cap as they beat Canada 3-0 in a friendly in Vancouver. Future red Dean Saunders netted a brace, his first goals for his country.
2014 – Tom Ince won his last Under-21’s cap while on loan at Crystal Palace, and his final one as a Blackpool player, as England beat Wales 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Swansea, with future red Danny Ings also in action.

1987 - John Barnes won his 31st cap for England, and his final one as a Watford player, as they drew 1-1 with Brazil in the Rous Cup at Wembley. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. On the same day, Ronnie Rosenthal won his first cap as a Club Brugge player as Israel lost 1-0 to Switzerland in a friendly in Aarhau, with ex-red Avi Cohen also playing.
2007 - Krisztián Németh won his last Under-19’s cap as an MTK Hungaria player as Hungary lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in the Republic of Ireland.
2008 - Németh played alongside fellow reds Péter Gulácsi and András Simon for Hungary Under-19’s in their 2-2 draw with Lithuania in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár.

Nice one Cyril
1946 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we beat an American League Select side 5-0 in New York. Jack Balmer and Bob Priday also netted.

Euro champions
2012 - Fernando Torres was booked after coming off the bench as Chelsea saw off Bayern München in a penalty shoot-out in their UEFA Champions League Final in Munich.
2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever became a European champion as the Dutch Under-17’s beat Italy 4-2 in the Final in Dublin.

A right Charlie
2006 – Future red Charlie Adam was sent off while making his debut for Scotland Under-21’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Turkey in Kilmarnock.
2010 – Christian Benteke made his senior international bow in Belgium’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Bulgaria in Brussels, with keeper Nikolay Mihaylov winning his first cap as a Twente player. Meanwhile, fellow future red Dejan Lovren featured for Croatia Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Slovakia in a European Championships qualifier.

King Billy on target
1955 - Billy Liddell scored as Scotland lost 4-1 to Austria in a friendly in Vienna. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger also played.

For Keith
1982 - We took part in a testimonial match for Alan Kennedy’s brother Keith, beating a Bury Select XI 8-7 at Gigg Lane. Keith Kennedy came on as a substitute for the reds and scored two goals. David Johnson also struck twice, with Craig Johnston, Steve Ogrizovic and Bury’s Paul Hilton and Craig Madden all also netting for the reds.

Pepe wed
2006 - Pepe Reina married Yolanda in Córdoba, just six days after helping us to claim the FA Cup against West Ham United in Cardiff.

Birth and death
1980 - Ex-reserves defender Neil Murphy was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team, and was last seen playing for West Cheshire League side Maghull as well as working as a fireman.
2011 – Reserves keeper Frank Lane died. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat.

Winning at sea
1935 – We beat Marino 5-3 in Gran Canaria, with Dave Wright and Tosh Johnson each netting twice and Fred Howe also on target.

On the move again
2015 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho joined AS Monaco from Rio Ave, having already spent two seasons on loan with the French side. On the same day, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane both played as England Under-17’s beat Spain on penalties after their World Championships play-off ended goalless in Bulgaria.

2022 – Midfielder Conor Thomas joined Crewe Alexandra from Cheltenham Town after twenty goals in 146 games for the Robins.
2018 – Ex-reds defender Markus Babbel was appointed Manager of Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League. However, he was sacked in January 2020.
2010 – Reserves centre-half Mikel San José was sold to Athletic de Bilbao, where he remains a regular for the La Liga side.

2007 - Former reserves winger Nicky Rizzo signed for Perth Glory. He retired from playing in 2013, setting up his own soccer school.
2004 - Ex-reserves midfielder Danny Williams re-joined Wrexham from Bristol Rovers on a free transfer. He helped them avoid relegation from League Two in his first season, but they succumbed the second time around.
1947 – Wing-half Harry Kaye moved on to Swindon Town after just two senior games since arriving at Anfield in 1940.

Also in international action
2017 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost out to Spain in the European Championships Final in a penalty shoot-out in Croatia, with Rhian Brewster missing from the spot.
2003 – Future reds winger Stewart Downing won his first cap for England Under-19’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in Dublin in a European Championships qualifier. John Welsh also featured.
2002 – Milan Baroš played for the Czech Republic Under-21’s in their 1-0 defeat of Belgium in the European Championships Finals in Switzerland. On the same day, ex-red Brad Friedel faced future red Bolo Zenden as the Netherlands beat the USA 2-0 in a friendly in Boston.

1990 – Gary Gillespie and future red Gary McAllister featured for Scotland as they drew 1-1 with Poland in a friendly at Hampden Park.
1989 – Future red Paul Stewart played for England B in their 2-0 win in Iceland.
1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén featured as Sweden Under-18’s beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Belgium.
1967 – Roger Hunt was on the losing side as England were thumped 5-0 by a Young England side.

1957 – Alan A’Court played as England Under-23’s lost a friendly 2-1 in Bulgaria. Meanwhile, Tommy Younger appeared for Scotland as they lost a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in Switzerland.
1954 – Andy Beattie took charge of Scotland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Norway in Oslo. He had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career.
1928 – Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played in England’s 3-1 friendly win in Belgium.
