Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. In comes Cally 1960 - Ian Callaghan signed as a professional. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. He had won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks for the first time on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. 1894 – Keeper John Whitehead signed from Everton. He only made three senior appearances across two seasons with the reds. Semi-final glory 1914 - We reached our first Cup Final, beating Aston Villa 2-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to a brace from James Nicholl. Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the Villa goal that day. 1908 - Anfield hosted the biggest ever FA Cup Semi-final win as Newcastle United beat Fulham 6-0. Reds debuts 1936 - Future boss Phil Taylor netted very late on to secure a point on his first-team bow, with Fred Howe also on target in our 2-2 draw at Derby County. Matt Busby missed a penalty as Sammy Crooks bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Reg Stockill also on target. 1932 – Forward Ted Hancock debuted as we lost 3-0 to Huddersfield Town at Anfield, with Wilf Bott scoring the first of his five goals past us, Dave Mangnall netting the first of his seven against the reds, and George Crownshaw also on the scoresheet. 1953 - Forward Eric Anderson made the first of his 76 reds appearances as we were beaten 2-1 by Charlton Athletic at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne nabbing our consolation. Future red John Evans bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Stuart Leary netting the first of his six past us. 1988 – Vitor Matos was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. He joined the reds as Elite Development Coach in October 2019. 1866 - Scottish inside-right Jimmy Ross was born in Edinburgh. The ‘little demon’ signed from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side before joining Burnley in March 1897. He was a key player in the formation of the Association Footballers’ Union in February 1898, founded in protest at wage restrictions imposed by the FA, and sadly died aged just 36 in June 1902 having succumbed to an acute skin disease. 1895 - Keeper John Jones was born in Holyhead. He signed from his hometown club in September 1924, but only managed four senior appearances while Elisha Scott was injured. He returned to Holyhead in 1925. Trebles galore 1962 - Ian St. John scored a second-half hat-trick as we beat Rotherham United 4-1 in a Second Division game at Anfield, after Roger Hunt had opened the scoring in our most recent League meeting with the Merry Millers. This was his 37th League strike of the season, beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record of 36 set during 1930/31. Don Weston bagged one of his four goals against the reds in a game originally postponed from Christmas. 1942 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble in a 5-2 Wartime League defeat of Rochdale at Anfield. Dicky Dorsett and Stan Polk also struck. 1896 - Centre-forward George Allan netted a hat-trick as we achieved our record equal away League win, 7-0 at Crewe Alexandra. Malcolm McVean bagged a brace, with Joe McQue and Frank Becton also on target that day in what remains the most recent League encounter between the two sides. First and last goals 1959 - Louis Bimpson grabbed his 39th and final reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Lincoln City in a Second Division meeting. Andy Graver struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Roy Chapman also scoring. 1925 – Forward Tom Scott struck the first of his four reds goals as we lost 4-1 at Leeds United. Thomas Jennings scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Russell Wainscott nabbing the first of his five. Jack Armand and Jack Harris also scored for the home side as Matt McQueen took charge of the reds for the hundredth time. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt netted his sixth and last goal for the reds in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Bury. Tom Kay nabbed one of his five goals past us, with Billy Hibbert netting the first two of his thirteen. George Latham played his nineteenth and final reds game. 1894 – Left-back Duncan McLean bagged his sixth and final reds goal in our 3-2 Second Division win at Northwich Victoria. John Givens and Hugh McQueen also got on the scoresheet. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2010 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 in a Premiership game at Anfield. Fernando Torres bagged a brace, with his first strike being a spectacular effort from distance, while Glen Johnson was also on target. 1910 – We lost 2-1 in another top-flight encounter, with inside-forward Jimmy Stewart bagging our goal at Roker Park and defender Tom Chorlton putting through his own net. Willie Clark also struck for the home side. Off, off and off 1998 - Barnsley had Darren Bernard, Chris Morgan and Darren Sheridan all sent off as we won 3-2 at Oakwell, thanks to a Karl-Heinz Riedle brace and a last-minute goal from Steve McManaman. Neil Redfearn struck twice, including one from the spot. End of the road for Heighway 1981 - Steve Heighway made his 331st and final League appearance for the reds as we lost at Arsenal, with Alan Sunderland netting the only goal of the game, one of his six against the reds. 1967 - We also visited Highbury with Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 1-1 draw, a day after our goalless meeting at Anfield. Future Gunners boss George Graham struck one of his four goals past us. Up against the Foxes 2004 - We held Leicester City to a goalless draw at the Walkers Stadium, with Dietmar Hamann playing his 200th reds game. 1964 - Roger Hunt and Alf Arrowsmith were on target as we won 2-0 at Filbert Street, despite being without suspended skipper Ron Yeats. Gordon’s last 1931 - Gordon Hodgson won his third and final cap for England as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in a British International Championships game at Hampden Park. Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop also played for England. On the same day, forward Bob Clark struck his eleventh goal in his 42nd and final reds game as we beat Portsmouth 3-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy McDougall and Dave Wright also on target. 1891 – Future red James Cleland won his only Scotland cap as they beat Ireland 2-1 in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. Digger’s half century 1990 - John Barnes won his fiftieth cap for England as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Clubmates Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon both also featured. On the same day, the Republic of Ireland secured their first win over Wales, at the fifth attempt. Ronnie Whelan skippered a side that also included Steve Staunton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy, while Ian Rush was on the losing side. Young debutants 1987 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen won his first cap for Norway Under-16’s in their 2-0 defeat by England at Lilleshall. 1995 - Vladimír Šmicer debuted for the Czech Republic Under-21’s as they beat Belarus 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä grabbed a brace as Finland won 6-0 in San Marino, the fourth of five consecutive Under-21’s games in which he was on target. 2011 – Ex-reds winger Adam Hammill won his first cap for England Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Iceland in a friendly at Deepdale. On the same day, Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured for England Under-17’s as they won 2-1 in Belgium in a European Championships Elite Round qualifier, while ex-red Mikel San José and future reds Thiago Alcântara and Christian Benteke also played for their countries. 2022 – Ex-reds left-back Yasser Larouci netted his only goal at this level on his debut for France Under-21’s as they thrashed Northern Ireland 5-0, with Oakley Cannonier winning his second and final cap for England Under-18’s as they drew 3-3 with Denmark in a tournament in Málaga. Kostas Tsimikas and future red Dominik Szoboszlai also featured in international action. Cut by the Blades We have twice been beaten by Sheffield United in this day in history. 1903 - Jack Cox and Sam Raybould were on target in a 4-2 defeat at Anfield. Walter Bennett scored the last of his five goals against the reds, with Ernest Needham converting a penalty and Archie Needham and Bert Lipsham also scoring as keeper Bill Perkins played his 117th and last reds game, while forward Sam Raybould appeared for the hundredth time. 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane, with Brian Deane bagging two of his eight goals against us. On the move 1995 - Dominic Matteo joined Sunderland on loan. He played just one first-team game while on Wearside, returning to establish himself at Anfield. 2002 - Maxi Rodríguez joined R.C.D. Espanyol from Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys for £4m. He bagged 26 goals in 110 La Liga outings, before joining Club Atlético de Madrid for €5m in July 2005. 1991 - Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Bury on loan from Manchester City, netting once in five outings for the Shakers. Deano’s last 2001 - Ex-red Dean Saunders won his 75th and final Welsh cap, alongside future red Paul Jones, as they drew 1-1 with the Ukraine in a World Cup tie in Cardiff, with Craig Bellamy winning his last cap as a Coventry City player. John Ritchie struck the last of his five goals against the reds with Harry Burrows putting through his own net before the break. Another award for Stevie 2007 - Steven Gerrard’s autobiography won the Tesco Sports Book of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards. Jones back to Wales 2002 - Ex-reserves forward Lee Jones re-joined Wrexham from Barnsley on a free transfer. He netted nineteen times in 56 games during this spell at the Racecourse Ground. Spurred into action 1988 – John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish both turned out as guests for a Tottenham Hotspur XI against Manchester United in a testimonial match for Danny Thomas, with United winning 3-2. African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. New boss 1923 - Matt McQueen was appointed Manager after David Ashworth’s departure for Oldham Athletic two months earlier. He helped the reds to retain the League title at the end of that season, taking charge of the team on 229 occasions in all. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times, then joining the club’s board towards the end of the First World War. Red milestones 2023 – Fabinho played his 200th reds game as we beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Cody Gakpo bagging his first goal for the club as Jürgen Klopp secured his 250th victory as boss. Mohamed Salah scored before the break, with Gakpo netting early in the second half. Happy birthday Mamadou 1990 – Centre-half Mamadou Sakho was born in Paris. He signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m in September 2013, netting three times in eighty games before falling out with boss Jürgen Klopp and being sent off to Crystal Palace on loan in February 2017, making the move permanent for an initial £24m six months later. 1870 – Half-back Tom Cleghorn was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02. Carra dismissed 1999 - We lost 1-0 to Charlton Athletic, our first match at The Valley since 1961. Jamie Carragher was sent off for a supposed elbow, while John Barnes made his debut for the Addicks, as a substitute. Keith Jones was on target to net the first Charlton goal in this fixture since 1960. 1954 - We also lost to Charlton, being beaten 3-2 at Anfield. Ex-Addick Johnny Evans and inside-forward Eric Anderson struck for the reds, while keeper Russell Crossley played his 73rd and final reds game. Eddie Firmani bagged a brace, with Syd O’Linn also on target. Fred’s treble 1915 - Fred Pagnam grabbed a hat-trick as we shared six goals with Chelsea in a League game at Anfield. Donald McKinlay put through his own net, with Harold Halse scoring the last of his four goals against the reds and Bobby Thomson also netting for the Blues as Elisha Scott saved a late penalty from Robert Abrams. 1982 - We also faced the Blues, losing an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-0 to the then-Second Division outfit at Stamford Bridge. Peter Rhoades-Brown and Colin Lee struck the goals. Super sub’s ton up 1979 – David Fairclough reached a century of reds games in our League meeting with Birmingham City, originally postponed from a month earlier. Graeme Souness struck the only goal at Anfield. Also recently 2022 – Fabinho bagged the only goal of our trip to bottom-of-the-table Burnley from a corner. Luther at last 1988 - Luther Blissett finally breached the reds’ defence in a League game at Watford to score the first goal against us in all competitions for 994 minutes, a then club record. We still won comfortably in a mud bath, 4-1, with Peter Beardsley bagging a brace to take his tally to eight in as many games, to add to goals from John Aldridge and ex-Hornet John Barnes. Mixed FA Cup fortunes We have won three of our four FA Cup ties on this day over the years, with the other tie being our defeat at Chelsea in 1982. 1971 - A Chris Lawler goal saw off Southampton in the Fifth Round at Anfield, as we headed towards Wembley. 1993 - We visited The Dell in a League game, losing 2-1 with Don Hutchison netting for the reds. 1932 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson scored to defeat Grimsby Town at Anfield, in another Fifth Round tie, just a week after we had been thumped 5-1 by them in a top-flight fixture at Blundell Park. We were then knocked out by Chelsea at Anfield in the next round. 1897 - Our first cup tie on this day was played at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground, with Malcolm McVean bagging his 43rd and final goal for the club and centre-half Robert Neill also scoring in our 2-1 win. Willie Donnelly made his eighth and final appearance in our goal, with inside-right Jimmy Ross playing for the 85th and last time. The reds prepared for this game by spending the week in Worcestershire, going straight there from our away match at Stoke City the previous Saturday. We lost out to Aston Villa that season after reaching our first ever Semi-final. Cyril’s treble 1943 - Cyril Done grabbed a hat-trick as we beat Tranmere Rovers 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Michael Hulligan bagged our other goal. Firsts and last 2021 – Loanee centre-half Ozan Kabak made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 at Leicester City behind closed doors. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring after the break, but James Maddison and Harvey Barnes struck either side of one of Jamie Vardy’s ten goals against us in what was Jürgen Klopp’s 300th game in charge of the reds. 1904 – Right-half Bobby Robinson played the first of his 271 reds games as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke. Forward Joe Hewitt also debuted in this game, the first of his 164 appearances. 1909 - Left-half Jim Bradley struck his eighth and final reds goal in the first minute of our 4-1 thumping of Leicester Fosse at Anfield, with full-back Bob Crawford making his reds bow and outside-left Michael Griffin playing his fourth and final reds game. Arthur Goddard nabbed a brace, with Sam Bowyer also on target. 1890 – Frank Grayer was born in Southampton. He signed from his hometown club for £100 in July 1912 but only played one senior reds game, as right-back in our 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United in April 1914. He was so badly wounded during the First World War that he was unable to play football again. International debuts 2019 – Oakley Cannonier played for England Under-15’s for the only time as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Belgium at St. George’s Park. 2002 – Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first senior cap as Greece drew 2-2 with Sweden in a friendly in Thessaloniki. 1937 - Future reds right-back Billy Hood won his only international cap, playing for Ireland as they thumped England 5-1 in an amateur international in Belfast. 1909 - Ex-reds winger Arthur Berry won his only cap for England as they beat Ireland 4-0 in the British International Championships at Valley Parade. Reds keeper Sam Hardy also played for the home side, while future red Billy Lacey made his debut for Ireland in the same game. Friendly scoring for their countries 2002 - Dietmar Hamann netted in Germany’s 7-1 defeat of Israel in Kaiserslautern. Substitute Vladimír Šmicer was on target on the same day as the Czech Republic won 4-3 in Cyprus, with Milan Baroš also playing. Yossi Benayoun bagged a hat-trick, with his first strike being our 500th in Europe. Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel netted twice each with Steven Gerrard also on target. Sami Hyypiä played his hundredth club European game, while Babel became our hundredth different scorer in continental competition. This was Rafael Benítez’s fiftieth Champions League game in charge of the reds. He scored one goal 2003 - Djimi Traoré scored his only ever reds goal in a Romanian mud-bath as we drew 1-1 with Steaua Bucureşti in a UEFA Cup Second Round match. 2018 – We lost a UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, with Milan Pavkov bagging a brace inside the opening half hour. The reds hit the woodwork twice after the break but failed to make the break-through. European firsts 1973 - Crvena Zvezda beat us 2-1, our first ever home defeat in the European Cup, with Kevin Keegan having an effort chalked off despite the ball appearing to have crossed the line. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. 1993 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho was born in Campinas. He signed from Monaco for an initial £39m in July 2018, scoring eleven times in 219 outings before moving on to Al-Ittihad for a reported £40m last July. The visitors bagged a very late equaliser through Mate that eventually saw us crash out at this Second Round stage on the away goals rule. Egged 1965 – We lost 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion. During the game, a hard-boiled egg was thrown onto the pitch, which Tommy Smith handed over to the referee, who stopped the game while he spoke to the police, with a loudspeaker announcement threatening to call off the game. Tony Brown opened the scoring with the first of his eight goals past us, with Clive Clark bagging one of his seven and John Kaye one of his four as centre-half Ron Yeats played his 200th reds game. Ex-reds in charge 1993 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of Coventry City following the resignation of Bobby Gould. He remained in the post for sixteen months, only losing twenty of his 67 games in charge. His major legacy to the club was selling Phil Babb to the reds, and signing Dion Dublin, as well as ex-red Mike Marsh. 2006 - Paul Ince was appointed Player/Manager of Macclesfield Town. He led them to fourteen victories in 35 games and remained in charge until June 2007, when he left to take over at MK Dons. 1998 - Nigel Clough signed for Burton Albion from Manchester City as Player/Manager. He led them into the Conference, moving on to take over at Derby County in January 2009. 2013 – Clough was appointed Manager of Sheffield United, leading them to an eleventh-place finish in League One and the FA Cup Semi-Final in his first season in charge. Gordon for the FA 1963 - Gordon Milne turned out for an England side as they faced a Rest of the World eleven in an FA Centenary game at Wembley, winning 2-1. Up against the Shakers 1915 - We lost 2-1 at Gigg Lane in a Wartime League match with Fred Pagnam grabbing our consolation. 1954 - Bury held us to a 1-1 draw in our Second Division meeting, with Eric Anderson on the scoresheet. Stan Pearson struck one of his eleven goals against the reds. Beating Boro 1948 - Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins struck as we beat Middlesbrough 4-0 in a top-flight meeting at Anfield. Billy Liddell converted a penalty, with the scoring completed by a Billy Whitaker own goal. 2013 – Ex-reds centre-half Daniel Ayala joined Middlesbrough on loan from Norwich City, making the move permanent three months later for £350,000. Farewells 1915 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie died in Glasgow. He signed from Everton for £150 in February 1912, but only managed to score five times in 34 appearances for the reds, returning north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian in May 1914. 1911 – Outside-right Andrew Kelvin died aged just 42. He signed from his hometown club Kilmarnock in 1892, returning there after just six reds games the following year. 1870 – Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn died. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02, ending his career with Plymouth Argyle. 2017 - Jörg Schmadtke resigned as Co-CEO Sports for 1. FC Köln Ltd, having been in the role since June 2013. He took over as the reds’ Sporting Director in May 2023. Other reds game 1982 – Mark Lawrenson was on target as we drew 1-1 at Stoke City with Mickey Thomas scoring a spectacular equaliser. Youngsters in action 2018 - Future red Jakub Ojrzyński debuted for Poland Under-16’s in their 4-1 friendly win over Austria. 2015 – Herbie Kane won his fifteenth and last cap for England Under-17’s as they drew 0-0 with South Korea in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2010 - Adam Morgan, Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling all featured as England Under-17’s beat Poland 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Georgia. 2002 – Future reds coach Gary O’Neil scored on his debut for England Under-20’s as they won a friendly 2-1 in Germany. Michael is officially the best 2000 - Michael Owen was named the Premiership’s Young Player of the Month for September. He had scored six goals during the month, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa, and he was the unanimous choice of the League Managers’ Association to secure the award. -
Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus! 1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. Happy birthday Brucie 1957 - Bruce Grobbelaar was born in Durban, South Africa. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime, and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1988 - Right-back and former reserves skipper Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool. He made the move to Melwood in the summer of 2006 after skippering the reds to FA Youth Cup glory earlier that year, also featuring as they retained the trophy the following year. He made six senior appearances as well as sitting on the bench on a further thirteen occasions, moving on to Bradford City in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. He retired from professional football in September 2018 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. 1940 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in May 1958 but only made one first-team appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1959, and moved on to Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to make a total of over 400 League appearances for a variety of clubs. Twelve in a row 1990 - We won our twelfth successive League match, a new club record, as Derby County went down 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Ray Houghton strike and a penalty from Peter Beardsley past Peter Shilton. Unfortunately, this run came to an end in our next game, as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City a fortnight later. Being sold 2010 – The club announced that the Board had agreed the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. Eventually, the deal went through after a series of delaying tactics by George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. Double capture 1966 – Full-back Stuart Mason and left-back Peter Wall signed from Wrexham for a combined £35,000. Mason never made the first team, while Wall failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. 1950 – Outside-right Don Woan signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. A baptism of fire 1991 - Rob Jones made his reds bow, just two days after signing from Crewe Alexandra. It was a real baptism of fire, as he helped us to claim a goalless draw at Manchester United. King Kenny on top 2006 - Kenny Dalglish came out on top in the club official website’s first 100 Players Who Shook The Kop poll, finishing ahead of Steven Gerrard, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes. The votes were cast by over 110,000 fans across the summer. Bosses in and out 2001 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Saint-Étienne. He had been in the side when we famously saw off Les Verts in 1977, but only lasted three months at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard before quitting. 2006 - Ex-reserves forward John Durnin resigned as a Coach at Southport, apparently due to other coaching and playing commitments. 2008 – Another former second-string striker, Mike Newell, was named as Grimsby Town boss, leading them to 22nd in League Two at the end of his first season. He had signed on from Ormskirk as an amateur in April 1912 and remained with the club for fourteen years, interrupted by the First World War, helping us to two consecutive League titles in the 1920’s before joining Bristol City in May 1926. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper Billy Molyneux also played their only senior reds games, while left-back Phil Ferns made his 28th and last appearance for the club and inside-left Gordon Wallace played for the 22nd and final time. 1947 - Winger Billy Watkinson scored on his Liverpool debut as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, with Willie Fagan nabbing the other. 1992 - Sami Hyypiä played his first game in the Finnish Premier League, as Myllykosken Pallo-47 won 2-0 at Jazz. 2008 - Jonjo Shelvey became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 59 days. Naby Keïta scored our fastest ever Premiership goal after just fourteen seconds, with Sadio Mané and Salah each bagging a brace. 1924 – Full-back Tommy Lucas and right-half Jock McNab both reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Notts County at Anfield, with Dick Forshaw netting the only goal of the game. Youngsters win again 2007 - We retained the FA Youth Cup, to claim it for the third time. Centre-back Robbie Threlfall, who had scored an own goal in the first leg, bagged the only goal of the game at Old Trafford, to wipe out Manchester United’s 2-1 first leg victory. We went on to secure the trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3, with keeper David Roberts saving one of United’s spot-kicks. Red endings 2008 - Peter Crouch grabbed his 42nd and final reds goal as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City. We had fallen two goals behind to Mikael Forssell and Sebastian Larsson strikes before Crouch and then Yossi Benayoun netted to ensure we qualified for the next season’s Champions League. 1952 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh played his eleventh and last reds game as we ended the season with a 4-0 top-flight thumping at Preston North End, with defender George Whitworth appearing for the ninth and final time. The legendary Tom Finney scored one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Wayman bagging two of his six against us and Angus Morrison netting one of his four. 1902 – Right-back Tom Robertson played his 47th and last reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Walter Whittaker struck one of his six goals against the reds. Johnny Walker scored in his 120th and final reds fame with Sam Raybould having a penalty saved. Hammerings 2023 – We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium, despite falling behind to Lucas Paquetá’s strike. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Michael’s fourth goal, our fifth, was our 700th in the Premiership. Milan Baroš added a brace. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He went on to play nearly a hundred times for the Pirates, netting fourteen times. 1941 - We also entertained United, with Cyril Done and Billy Liddell on target in a 2-1 Wartime League victory. Honoured 2009 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both voted in the PFA Team of the Year, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka and future red Glen Johnson also included. Bobby Graham netted both our goals while midfielder Steve Arnold played his second and last reds game with keeper Tommy Lawrence appearing for the 390th and final time. The reds were fined £7,500 for fielding a weakened team, with the match only two days after a League match at Nottingham Forest and just two days before the second leg of our Fairs Cup Semi-final at Leeds United. Derby joy 1943 - We thumped Everton 4-1 at Anfield with Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer, Cyril Done and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting in this Wartime League fixture. A happy day 1973 - Roy Evans married Mary at Liverpool’s Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. 2010 – Ex-red Álvaro Arbeloa’s wife Carlota gave birth to a daughter, Alba. A double for Quasi 1989 - Peter Beardsley played his first competitive game following the Hillsborough disaster, bagging a brace as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle netted in West Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Feyenoord. The two players would meet in the World Cup Semi-final the following year. Semi-final joy and despair 2001 - We played in our 21st FA Cup Semi-final, beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at Villa Park, with Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler scoring after the underdogs had kept us out for nearly eighty minutes. Keith Ryan bagged a late consolation for Wanderers. 1981 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Bayern München in the European Cup with Kurt Niedermayer rattling the crossbar, but we went through on away goals after the return in Germany. This game marked Steve Heighway’s 475th and final reds game, as he came on at half time to replace Terry McDermott, while Graeme Souness missed the match through injury. 1990 - We lost 4-3 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, also at Villa Park. This is the furthest we have ever gone in the competition as holders. We went in ahead at half time, thanks to an Ian Rush strike, and in total control, although our goalscorer had gone off injured after half an hour. However, the Eagles came out fighting in the second half. The game ended 3-3 after ninety minutes, with Steve McMahon also on target, and John Barnes scoring from spot. Future Eagles boss Alan Pardew grabbed the dramatic winner in extra time, with Mark Bright, Gary O’Reilly and Andy Gray all also on target for Palace. Tom born 1859 – Tom Watson was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Through to another semi 2008 - We beat Arsenal 4-2 in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final. Abou Diaby put the visitors ahead before Sami Hyypiä and Fernando Torres gave us the lead. Emmanuel Adebayor looked to have sent the Gunners through on the away goals rule after a storming run from Theo Walcott, with one of his five goals past us to date, but moments later Ryan Babel was brought down in the box and Steven Gerrard converted the spot-kick to score in his fourth consecutive home game in Europe, a new club record. Babel then added a fourth in stoppage time. In Bob’s honour 1999 - The Paisley Gateway was officially opened at Anfield by his widow Jessie, three years after Bob’s death, to commemorate his service to the club. As Manager, he won an incredible nineteen trophies in nine seasons. He had also played 277 times in our first team, netting twelve times. Fernando Torres then struck a brace either side of Óscar Cardozo’s consolation, so becoming the first red ever to net twice in four consecutive home games. For Gerry 1970 - A testimonial match was staged for Gerry Byrne with the reds drawing 8-8 with an All Star XI at Anfield. Bobby Graham, Chris Lawler and Ian St. John each netted a brace, with Roger Hunt and Willie Stevenson also on target. Steve Heighway played his first reds game and was so unfamiliar with his surroundings that he asked a member of the opposition which end was the Kop! Sammy starts off with a bang 1978 - Sammy Lee scored on his reds debut as a substitute for David Johnson, who tore his knee ligaments, in our 3-2 home League win over Leicester City. Tommy Smith nabbed both our other goals, his final reds strikes. Brian’s ton up 1974 – Brian Hall played his hundredth League game as we lost 1-0 at Sheffield United, with Terry Nicholl on target and Ray Clemence saving a penalty from Keith Eddy. Beaten by the Blues 2009 – We lost 3-1 at home to Chelsea in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final after Fernando Torres had handed us the lead, to suffer our only defeat of the season at Anfield. Branislav Ivanović twice headed in when unmarked at set pieces, with Didier Drogba rounding off the scoring late on with one of his eleven goals past us to equal our worst ever home defeat in European competition. Pepe Reina played his fiftieth European Cup game. Three off the mark 1912 – American outside-left Hugh Lester and James Scott both debuted as we won 2-0 at Bradford City in a top-flight fixture, with the former becoming the first player born outside of the British Isles to play for the reds. Red beginnings and ends 1944 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen died in Norwich. He had made 61 reds appearances after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. 1889 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf was born in Seaham, County Durham. He signed from Newcastle United for £150 in May 1912 and netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. Michael Thomas struck before Lawrie Sanchez equalised, but Ronnie Rosenthal put us in front at the break. Andy Clarke levelled the scores again before John Fashanu scored one of his five goals against the reds from the spot. 1972 – We defeated Coventry City 3-1 at home with Kevin Keegan and John Toshack on the scoresheet either side of a Tommy Smith penalty. 1961 – We beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield as Roger Hunt bagged a brace. 1959 – We lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough in a Second Division fixture in L4. 4-3 for the first time 1996 - We played out a real humdinger with Newcastle United at Anfield. Robbie Fowler put us ahead after two minutes, but we went in 2-1 down at half-time after one of Les Ferdinand’s six strikes past us and a David Ginola goal. Robbie Fowler levelled the scores with his 22nd strike in his last 21 outings, but Faustino Asprilla put the visitors ahead again two minutes later. Stan Collymore tied the match once more, and then grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner right at the death, in a match later voted the best in the Premiership’s first decade. A new record capture 1981 - Craig Johnston signed from Middlesbrough for a club record £650,000 fee. He grabbed forty goals, including one in the 1986 FA Cup Final, in 271 reds games, also helping us to claim the European Cup, five League titles and two League Cups in his time at Anfield. Debuts leading to contrasting careers 1981 - Ronnie Whelan got his reds career off to a flying start by scoring on his debut, a 3-0 home League win over Stoke City, with Terry McDermott adding a brace. Whelan went on to play 493 reds games in all. 1965 – We also beat the Potters at Anfield when Gordon Milne, Ian St. John and Roger Hunt were on target in a 3-2 victory. Roy Vernon struck the last of his six goals against the reds, with Harry Burrows also on target. 1897 - Keeper Charlie Jowett played his only senior reds game as we drew 2-2 at Anfield with The Wednesday. Inside-forward Andrew McCowie made the first of his 35 appearances for the club in this top-flight game. Willie Michael nabbed his fifth and last reds foal with Frank Becton converting a penalty while Laurie Bell bagged the first of his four strikes against the reds, with Arthur Brady also on the scoresheet for the visitors. 1899 - Custodian Bill Perkins debuted in a 3-2 defeat of Newcastle United at Anfield. Jack Cox, Johnny Walker and George Allan scored our goals, while half-back Tom Cleghorn played his seventieth and final reds game. Perkins went on to play 117 reds games, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. On our way to Wembley 1974 - We clinched our place in the FA Cup Final by beating Leicester City 3-1 in a replay at Villa Park. Brian Hall struck straight after half time before Len Glover equalised, but goals from Kevin Keegan and John Toshack took us to Wembley. On the way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his 58th game in the European Cup, breaking Phil Neal’s club record, as we won 3-0 at PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final. Steven Gerrard bagged his fifteenth goal in the European Cup, breaking Ian Rush’s club record in the process, while playing his fiftieth Champions League game. John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch also netted, with Riise’s strike being his 31st and final one for the club. Dirk Kuyt seemingly got himself booked at the end of the game by obstructing a free-kick to guarantee he would be banned for second leg at Anfield and ensure a clean slate for the Semi-final. Unfortunately, Fábio Aurélio ruptured his Achilles, which kept him out of the first team until September. Derby victories 1999 – This day brought an end to five years without a derby victory as we beat Everton 3-2 at Anfield, despite Olivier Dacourt opening the scoring in the first minute. The game is still remembered for Robbie Fowler’s goal-line sniffing celebration after he struck a penalty in front of the away fans, one of two goals he scored that day, to add to a Patrik Berger strike. Young right-back Steven Gerrard helped to preserve all three points with a couple of scrambled goal-line clearances late on. Francis Jeffers became the youngest post-war Merseyside derby goalscorer in this game, aged just eighteen years and 68 days. 1976 - Phil Neal missed a penalty at Anfield, but this did not prove costly as David Fairclough netted the only goal of a game that was played at eleven o’clock, due to the Grand National taking place at Aintree that afternoon. This was the only occasion in that title-winning season that we won four League games on the bounce. A sweet win for Thommo at Old Trafford 1972 - Goals from Chris Lawler, John Toshack and Emlyn Hughes handed us a 3-0 win at Manchester United, with Phil Thompson making his reds debut. Unfortunately, we did not win there again for another six years. 1931 – We also played a First Division match at Old Trafford, with Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1. Red hundreds 2002 - Sami Hyypiä grabbed the only goal of our Champions League Quarter-final first leg at home to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, to give us a slender advantage to take to Germany. This was our 200th game in Europe. 1934 – Gordon Hodgson and Berry Nieuwenhuys struck as we won 2-0 at Huddersfield Town as right-back Willie Steel reached a century of League outings for us. Hat-trick hero 1920 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw netted all three goals in our home First Division win over Derby County, with forward Billy Matthews debuting for the reds, at centre-half. 1937 - Harry Eastham was on target as we were beaten 4-1 at the Baseball Ground as right-half Ted Savage reached a century of reds appearances. Jack Nicholas and Ronnie Dix each netted one of their four goals against the reds, with Dai Astley bagging one of his six past us and Charlie Napier also on target. Bimpson off the mark 1953 - Louis Bimpson bagged the first of his 39 reds goals as we beat Cardiff City 2-1 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Bill Jones also on target. Most recently 2021 – We won 3-0 at Arsenal behind closed doors, thanks to a brace from Diogo Jota and a Mohamed Salah strike. Double award winners 2009 - Rafael Benítez and Steven Gerrard were named the Barclays Manager and Player of the Month, respectively. On the same day, Gerrard agreed a new contract until 2013, with Dirk Kuyt signing on until 2012. Happy birthdays 1958 – Former reserve team kit man John Wright was born in Liverpool. He was with the club for nearly a decade, initially as a masseur at the Academy, and is the father of former reds right-back Stephen Wright. 1901 - Left-winger Billy Chalmers was born in Aberdeen. He only made two senior appearances after signing from Old Aberdeen FC in 1923, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in June 1925. 1926 - Outside-left Ken Brierley was born in Ashton-under-Lyme. He went on to net eight times in 61 first-team appearances after signing from Oldham Athletic for £7,000 in February 1948, returning there in March 1953. Red farewells 1915 - Defender Phil Bratley played his thirteenth and final reds game in our 6-2 thumping at Aston Villa, with Harry Hampton scoring his second hat-trick against the reds in this fixture, and a club record fourteenth for the Villains, the last of his fifteen goals against us, and debutant Harry Nash also bagging a treble. Jackie Sheldon converted a penalty with Tom Miller grabbing our other goal. Bratley returned to Rotherham County, one of his former clubs, later that year. 1926 – We drew 2-2 with Birmingham City in L4. John Bradford bagged two of his fifteen goals past us, including a penalty. Gordon Hodgson scored as we also benefited from a Bill Hunter own goal, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his 242nd and last reds game. Jocky at the wrong end 1990 - Alan Hansen scored an own goal as we beat Wimbledon 2-1 with Ian Rush and Gary Gillespie scoring at the right end. He had also put through his own net at Plough Lane the season before! In charge 1954 - Andy Beattie managed Scotland for the first of seventeen times as they lost 4-2 to England at Hampden Park in a World Cup qualifier that also counted towards the British International Championships. Beattie had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 2011 - Paul Ince left as Manager of Notts County by mutual consent, after losing a club record nine games in a row. Allan’s moment of glory 1897 - George Allan won his only Scottish cap as they lost 2-1 to England at Crystal Palace in the British International Championships. He was therefore the first player to be capped by the Scots while on our books. Future red Edgar Chadwick won his seventh and final cap for the home side. Beating the Wearsiders We have faced Sunderland three times on this day, without losing any of these top-flight meetings. 1948 - The first match ended goalless at Anfield. 1954 - Billy Liddell converted a penalty with Brian Jackson, John Evans and Eric Anderson also on target as we won in L4 by the odd goal in seven. The black-tie affair involved a main course of Chicken Zingara, with guests including Bill Shankly, Derby County boss Brian Clough, Jimmy Tarbuck, Kenny Lynch and Gerry Marsden. Final cap 2010 – Keeper Tyrell Bedford won his second and last cap for England Under-16’s as they beat Japan 2-1 in the Montaigu Tournament. Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling both also featured. A win in the fizzy cup 1995 - Steve McManaman was the star of the show as we won our sixth League Cup, when it was known as the Coca Cola Cup, by defeating First Division Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Wembley. Macca got both our goals, with Alan Thompson grabbing a late consolation for the Trotters. Future red Jason McAteer was on the losing side that day, while John Barnes was playing his 300th reds game. 2005 - We defeated Bolton again, with Igor Bišcan heading the only goal of the game at Anfield late on from a Djimi Traoré cross, his third and final reds goal. 1926 - We also beat Wanderers, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our First Division meeting late on at Burnden Park. Match-fixing shame 1915 - We visited Old Trafford on this Good Friday for a First Division match with Manchester United, who were struggling against relegation, while we were comfortable in mid-table. The game ended in a 2-0 United win with George Anderson bagging a brace, the last of his four goals against us. Reds left-winger Jackie Sheldon and United’s Pat O’Connell both missed penalties, with full-back Bob Purcell handballing to give away United’s missed penalty. Seven players were later suspended for fixing this match, including four reds. Sheldon was a former United player, while centre-forward Tom Miller later moved to Old Trafford. Half-back Tommy Fairfoul and Purcell were also involved. 1894 – We also faced United, who were still known as Newton Heath at the time, losing 2-0 at Bank Street in a testimonial match for their player Billy Stewart. In front of the Kop for the last time 1994 - Ian Rush scored our consolation in a 2-1 League defeat by Sheffield United, with Jostein Flo bagging both Blades goals. This was the last reds strike from open play in front of the standing Kop. 1923 - We were also beaten by the Blades when Dick Forshaw netted as we were thumped 4-1 at Bramall Lane in another top-flight encounter on Easter Monday. Hitting the top 1982 - We climbed to the top of the table for the first time that season, when Kenny Dalglish grabbed the only goal of our Good Friday win over Notts County at Anfield, with Terry McDermott having a penalty saved. We had been languishing in twelfth just fourteen games earlier, but went on to claim our thirteenth League title. Disappointment against the Baggies 1971 – West Bromwich Albion held us to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Anfield, with Alun Evans bagging our goal late on. Tony Brown bagged one of his eight goals against the reds. 2011 – We lost 2-1 at The Hawthorns, our first defeat there for thirty years. Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger both had to go off injured inside the first half hour before Martin Škrtel headed us in front after the break. Facing the Gunners 2008 – Dirk Kuyt grabbed our equaliser just three minutes after Emmanuel Adebayor had struck as we held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of our Champions League Quarter-final at the Emirates Stadium, the first of his five goals past us to date. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. Jan Mølby also turned out for his homeland that day, as Denmark held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in another friendly, at Windsor Park. 1988 - Kenny secured another century when he led the reds to his hundredth victory as Manager, with John Aldridge and John Barnes striking in a 2-1 League defeat of Wimbledon at Anfield. This was Digger’s hundredth club goal, while Gary Gillespie reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Dalglish came on as a very late replacement for Aldridge, with Eric Young bagging the visitors’ consolation straight after that. Auf wiedersehen twice 1965 - We faced 1. FC Köln in a European Cup Third Round replay in Rotterdam after two goalless draws. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Skipper Ron Yeats called tails but the first attempt landed upright in the mud, although the Germans claimed it was leaning towards heads! Inter-war tonkings 1928 - We were thumped 4-0 at Hillsborough by The Wednesday. Mark Hooper struck the first of his eight goals past us, with Ellis Rimmer netting the first of his five, as Jimmy Seed and Jimmy Trotter also scored. 1934 - We went down 5-1 at Leeds United, with Gordon Hodgson netting in his fourth consecutive League game, in which time he had scored nine times, in what was his 300th League game for the reds. Wark walks in 1984 - John Wark signed from Ipswich Town for £475,000 He struck an impressive 42 times in his 108 games for the reds. He left Anfield in January 1988 for £100,000 to return to Portman Road. More derby joy 2005 - We beat Everton 2-1 at Anfield as we continued to chase our neighbours for a top-four finish. Uncle Joe emerges 1921 - Joe Fagan was born in Walton Hospital, Liverpool. He joined the Anfield coaching staff in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager to Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League, European Cup and League Cup, retiring just a year later after 71 victories in 131 games in all competitions. Welcome to Brucie 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for £250,000 from Vancouver Whitecaps. Our eccentric keeper played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups, three FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. Other reds birthdays 1902 – Scottish centre-forward Jimmy Smith was born in Old Kilpatrick. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, netting 66 for Ayr United in 1927/28. He signed for the reds from Ayr for £5,500 in September 1929, going on to bag 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. He moved into amateur football with Tunbridge Wells Rangers in June 1932. 1897 - John Miller was born in Motherwell. He only played eight times while at Anfield before moving on to Aberdeen in June 1921. He was Tom’s brother, who was caught up in the 1915 match fixing scandal. 1922 – Full-back Frank Lock was born in London. He bagged just one goal in eleven games, as well as six in fifteen wartime appearances, moving on to Burnley in November 1949. Double capture 1930 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson and forward Dave Wright both signed from Sunderland for a combined £4,800. Gunson made 87 appearances, scoring an impressive 26 times in his injury-affected time at Anfield before moving on to Swindon Town in June 1934. He signed from Bootle Boys Brigade in January 1938 and struck 37 times in 110 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. Salah and Mané both also struck the woodwork while Dejan Lovren reached a century of League games for the reds. 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a brace, with Michael Thomas netting his only goal of the season to give us a 3-2 League win at Blackburn Rovers. Stan’s first goal came from a tamely struck shot that was heading straight into the arms of Tim Flowers until it unexpectedly struck a divot and bounced into the net! Happy birthdays 1878 - Inside-left Andy McGuigan was born in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. He signed from Hibernian in May 1900 and bagged fourteen goals in 37 reds games, including five against Stoke at Anfield in January 1902, as he became the first red ever to score so many in one game. He was part of our first League title-winning side in 1901, before joining Middlesbrough the following year. He later returned to Anfield as a scout and was a club director as we won back-to-back titles in 1922 and 1923. 2001 - Midfielder Luis Longstaff was born in Darlington. He joined the reds from Newcastle United in 2015, making his senior debut in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, although he was released in June 2022. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. Four for Fagan 1940 - Willie Fagan netted four goals, including a penalty, as we won 8-3 at Port Vale in a Wartime League fixture. Cyril Done struck twice, including once from the spot. Reds in Arabia 1978 - We drew 1-1 with the Saudi Arabian national side in a friendly in Jeddah with Kenny Dalglish grabbing our goal. Heading out 2020 – Forward Rhian Brewster was sold to Sheffield United after four reds outings, as the Blades paid a club record £23.5m. On the same day, reds striking legend Ian Rush was appointed Wales Under-17’s coach. 2004 - Bruce Grobbelaar was sacked as Manager of South African side Manning Rangers. 2008 - Dean Saunders was named as Wrexham boss. He led them to tenth, eleventh and then fourth in the Conference National in his three seasons in charge. An international debutant 1968 - Future red Jack Whitham won his only cap for England Under-23’s as a substitute in their 3-1 defeat of Wales at the Racecourse Ground. In World Cup action 2009 - Martin Kelly played for England Under-20’s as they drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan in a World Championship Finals group game in Egypt, while future red Sebastián Coates featured in Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the same group. Other reds games 1993 – Arsenal held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1982 – We lost 1-0 at Ipswich Town with Mich D’Avray heading in late on. 1971 – We drew 0-0 at Stoke City. 1954 – We beat Notts County 3-1 in a Second Division match in L4 as Eric Anderson struck either side of a John Evans goal. 1948 – Derby County held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Michael Owen then added a brace as we won 3-0, with his first goal being our 500th under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. El-Hadji Diouf played his 75th reds game, and fiftieth in the League. Carra’s Euro record 2011 - Jamie Carragher played his 46th game in the UEFA Cup or UEFA Europa League, a new club record for this tournament under its several guises. We were held to a goalless draw by Sporting Clube de Braga at Anfield, having already lost the first leg in Portugal, with Pepe Reina playing his 300th reds game. Sadio again 2019 - Sadio Mané scored in his third consecutive game as we won 2-1 at Fulham. Ex-red Ryan Babel equalised for the home side before James Milner converted a late penalty to secure the win and send us back to the top of the table. Feliz aniversario 1983 – Portuguese midfielder Raúl Meireles was born in Porto. He signed from his hometown club for £11.5m in August 2010, bagging five goals in 44 matches, with all these strikes coming in a six-game spell since Kenny Dalglish’s return as Manager. More European memories 1965 - Our first continental game on this day was a goalless European Cup Third Round second leg match with 1. FC Köln, after the original meeting two weeks earlier had been postponed due to snow. The tie had to go to a third game, as both legs had finished without score. We eventually went through on a coin toss! 1976 - We beat Dynamo Dresden 2-1 in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg at Anfield after a goalless first leg draw in East Germany, on our way to winning the trophy for the second time. Jimmy Case opened the scoring after hitting the bar, with Kevin Keegan also netting in what was Bill Shankly’s hundredth game in charge. 1982 - We lost 2-0 in Bulgaria to CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round, having only won the first leg 1-0 at Anfield, although Ian Rush’s header after just two minutes appeared to cross the line, and we had two strong penalty appeals turned down. With twelve minutes remaining, Bruce Grobbelaar was caught in two minds about coming out for a ball, and Stoycho Mladenov nodded into an empty net. The game then went into extra time, and a deflected Mladenov shot evaded a host of reds defenders on the line to put CSKA ahead on aggregate. There was still time for both Ronnie Whelan and Mark Lawrenson to hit the woodwork, and Lawrenson was also sent off for retaliation, our first dismissal in European competition. On the way to Wembley 1986 - We won 2-1 at Watford in an FA Cup Sixth Round replay. John Barnes put the Hornets ahead from a free-kick, before Jan Mølby equalised from the spot in the 86th minute. Ian Rush sent us through in extra time, keeping us on course for the double. Thumping Boro 1906 - We beat Middlesbrough 6-1 with forward John Carlin grabbing his two final reds goals, and our other goals coming from Jack Cox, Arthur Goddard, Joe Hewitt and Jack Parkinson. Debutants 1894 – Inside-right John Givens scored on his reds bow in a 1-1 Second Division draw at Lincoln City, our first ever game on this day in history. Future red John Chadburn struck for the Imps. 1934 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop and forward Vic Wright both made their reds debuts in our 4-1 League win at home to Birmingham City, a game that saw Gordon Hodgson score all our goals. Derby stalemate 1917 - We drew a Wartime League match at Goodison Park 2-2, with Thomas Bennett and Walter Wadsworth netting for the reds. Farewells 1902 – Club founder John Houlding died. 1956 – Winger Joe Dickson bagged his final two reds goals as we beat Swansea Town 4-1 at Anfield in a Second Division match. Billy Liddell and Eric Anderson also netted. Youngsters reach the Final 2006 - The reds reached the FA Youth Cup Final, beating Southampton in a penalty shoot-out after the tie had ended 4-4 after two legs. Happy birthdays 1956 - Frank McGarvey was born in Glasgow. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first-team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1983 - Former reserves midfielder Neil Prince was born. He made seven appearances for the Bantams, without getting on the scoresheet. 2011 – Future red Fabio Borini joined Swansea City from Chelsea. He struck six times in twelve goals while in South Wales as the Swans gained promotion to the top flight. International firsts 1900 – Ex-red Dan Cunliffe won his only England cap in their 2-0 defeat of Ireland in the British International Championships at Lansdowne Road. 1913 - Ernest Peake netted his only Welsh goal as they lost 4-3 to England in Bristol. 1923 - Jock McNab won his only cap in Scotland’s 2-0 defeat of Wales at St. Mirren. Other reds games 1973 – John Mahoney netted a spectacular own goal as we won 1-0 at Stoke City. 1962 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in a Second Division match at Leyton Orient with Alan A’Court nabbing a late double. 1951 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Anfield with Billy Liddell scoring direct from a free kick and then converting a penalty. 1928 – Cardiff City won 2-1 in L4 despite Tommy Reid giving us a half-time lead. Len Davies scored one of his seven goals against the reds, with Billy Thirlaway netting the winner. 1923 – We lost 1-0 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. Horace Barnes struck one of his nine goals past us as we remained top of the table. 1900 – Tommy Robertson and Johnny Walker scored as we beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield. Young future reds for England 1982 - Middlesbrough’s David Hodgson struck for England Under-21’s as they won 2-1 in Poland in a European Championship Finals Quarter-final. Steve McMahon, then playing across the park, also featured. Also in international action 1936 – Ex-red Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State as they beat Switzerland 1-0 in a friendly in Dublin. 1977 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s as they won a friendly 23-1 in Denmark. 1993 – Roy Hodgson took charged of Switzerland as they won a friendly 1-0 in Tunisia. 1999 – Future red Milan Baroš featured as the Czech Republic Under-18’s beat Poland 3-1 in a friendly. 2010 – Future red Suso played as Spain Under-17’s thumped Northern Ireland 4-0.
