God off the mark 1993 - Robbie Fowler scored on his reds debut as we beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage in our League Cup Second Round first leg match. Ian Rush and Nigel Clough had put us two ahead at the break, with Sean Farrell pulling a goal back before God struck. Happy birthday Harry 1978 - Harry Kewell was born in Smithfield in Australia. He signed from Leeds United for £5m in July 2003, but his time at Anfield was somewhat disappointing due to a series of niggling injuries, as he bagged sixteen goals in 139 reds games before moving to Galatasaray as his contract expired in July 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League and FA Cup in his reds career, although he limped out of both finals. 2004 – Right-back Isaac Mabaya was born in Preston. He joined the Academy aged six, turning pro in September 2021, making the first-team bench for an FA Cup tie the following January. He featured for the first time in a 4-0 thumping by Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Thailand in July 2022. 1927 - Defender George Whitworth was born in Eckington, Derbyshire. He signed from Stanton Ironworks in February 1950, but only made nine appearances in his three years at Anfield, standing in for Phil Taylor. 1911 - Forward John McFarlane was born in Shettleston, Glasgow. He signed from Aberdeen in November 1928 and became our then-youngest ever player when he debuted as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton in the League three months later, aged just seventeen years and 47 days. However, he only played one more senior game, moving on to Halifax Town in July 1930. Seven in a row 2018 – We secured a club record seventh consecutive win from the start of a season when we beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield, with all the goals coming in the first half. We took the lead when Xherdan Shaqiri's shot took two deflections, eventually going down as a Wesley Hoedt own goal. Joël Matip headed in with Mohamed Salah netting in first-half stoppage time. Unfortunately, we lost our next game, an EFL Cup Third Round tie at home to Chelsea. 2019 – We won 2-1 at Chelsea with Trent Alexander-Arnold opening the scoring with a fabulous free-kick, with the home side having a goal ruled out for offside by VAR before Roberto Firmino doubled our lead after half an hour. N’Golo Kanté pulled a goal back after the break, but we held on to secure maximum points from our opening six League games. Graduating to the first team 1970 - The reds included two university graduates in their ranks for the first time, as Brian Hall and Steve Heighway both featured against Third Division Mansfield Town in a League Cup Second Round replay at Anfield. Joe Fagan’s son, right-back Kit, made his reds debut as a late substitute for Heighway. However, he only ever made one more senior appearance. Jimmy Sutton gave the visitors a shock lead from thirty yards inside two minutes. Emlyn Hughes equalised before John Stenson headed the visitors back in front. Tommy Smith netted a penalty to take the match into extra time, with Alun Evans grabbing the winner as we won 3-2. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Swindon Town at the next hurdle. A lucky escape 1992 - We came back from 3-0 and 4-2 down to Third Division Chesterfield to draw our League Cup Second Round first leg 4-4, as we conceded four times at Anfield for the first time since December 1969. Mark Wright netted a brace, with Ronnie Rosenthal also on target and Don Hutchison bagging his first reds goal. However, we won the second leg 4-1 to progress to the next round. This game saw young midfielder Phil Charnock’s first reds start, and second and final appearance in all. Steve Norris and Dave Lancaster struck twice each for the Spireites. Undefeated at Goodison We have not lost any of our three trips to Goodison on this day in history. 1990 - We won 3-2, with Peter Beardsley adding a brace to a John Barnes spot-kick to put us three goals ahead, before Andy Hinchcliffe and then Stuart McCall, from a free-kick that bounced off the bar onto Glenn Hysén and in, struck for the home side. 1962 - A last-minute Roger Hunt goal handed us a share of the spoils in the first League derby for eleven years, with Kevin Lewis also scoring in a 2-2 draw, although the Blues had two further goals disallowed. Roy Vernon opened the scoring from the spot for the home side, one of his six strikes against us, with ex-red Johnny Morrissey putting them in front. 1900 - Sam Raybould equalised immediately after the break as the game ended 1-1, getting on the scoresheet for the fourth game in a row. Anfield despair 2010 – We were knocked out of the Carling Cup by the ‘formidable challenge’ of Northampton Town, 4-2 on penalties after the game had ended 1-1 in normal time and then 2-2 after extra time. This was our first ever League Cup defeat to basement opposition. Milan Jovanović opened the scoring with his first reds goal as Sotirios Kyrgiakos skippered the reds for the only time, with David N’Gog heading in our extra-time equaliser. Keeper Brad Jones, centre-half Danny Wilson and midfielders Tom Ince and Jonjo Shelvey all made their reds bows. Shelvey and Daniel Agger both converted in the shoot-out, with N’Gog and Nathan Eccleston both missing. In and out 2000 - Left-back Grégory Vignal signed from Montpelier for £500,000. He only made fourteen starts and twenty appearances in total, and moved permanently to Portsmouth in July 2006, following four loan spells away from Anfield. 1977 – Forward Alan Waddle was sold to Leicester City. He signed from Halifax Town for £40,000 in June 1973 but only made 22 appearances in his four years at Anfield, netting just once, at Goodison Park in December 1973, as his route to the first team was usually blocked by Kevin Keegan and John Toshack, although he was on the bench for the European Cup Final in 1977. Disappointment against the Blues We have twice faced Birmingham City on this day in history, without securing a victory. 2007 - We were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Anfield, with media attention focused on the fact that Fernando Torres was rested for the opening hour. 1906 - We lost 2-1 at Coventry Road. Jack Cox grabbed our consolation, while full-back Percy Saul made his reds bow. Arthur Mounteney bagged one of his five goals against us, with Bill Jones also netting. Five thousand points 2001 - Jari Litmanen’s goal at Anfield to defeat Tottenham Hotspur took us past 5,000 points in League football. Michael Owen came on as a substitute, but suffered a hamstring pull after just a quarter of an hour on the pitch. A Dane in Yorkshire 1995 - Jan Mølby joined Barnsley on loan, for whom he only made five appearances. He then moved to Norwich City on loan, in the twilight of his Anfield career. Defensive debuts 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen won his first senior cap as Israel won a friendly 1-0 in Greece. 1993 - Future red Rigobert Song won his first senior international cap in Cameroon’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Mexico in Los Angeles. Stig Inge Bjørnebye and future reds Karl-Heinz Riedle and Christian Ziege also played for their countries that day. Rushie on target again 1982 - Ian Rush scored in the third of five consecutive internationals as Wales beat Norway 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Swansea. Ex-red Joey Jones also played, winning his final cap while with Wrexham. Mark Lawrenson and future red Michael Robinson both featured as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in Rotterdam on the same day, while Phil Neal won his fortieth England cap as they drew 2-2 in Denmark in another qualifier. 2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo netted for the Netherlands as they won a UEFA Nations League group game 2-0 in Poland, with Virgil van Dijk captaining the side. Ben Doak was on target on his debut for Scotland Under-21’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Belfast, while ex-red Rhian Brewster bagged his last two goals at this level including a penalty as England Under-21’s won a friendly 2-0 in Italy, with Harvey Elliott also featuring. On the same day, Neco Williams won his first cap since moving to Nottingham Forest as Wales lost 2-1 to Belgium in the Nations League in Brussels. International finales 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his seventh and last Under-19's cap as Norway beat Poland 3-1 in Aberdeen. 1997 – Future red John Arne Riise won his only cap at Under-17’s level as Norway lost 3-2 to Italy. Mixed fortunes against the Villains 1997 - Robbie Fowler converted a spot-kick in front of the live TV cameras, with first-time skipper Steve McManaman and Karl-Heinz Riedle also on target as we beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield. 1951 - We lost 2-0 at Villa Park in another top-flight encounter back. A double treble 1917 - Thomas Bennett and Harry Lewis both bagged hat-tricks as we thumped Bolton Wanderers 6-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Rovers and Leeds again and again 1945 - Jack Balmer and Willie Fagan both grabbed braces as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 5-0 in a Wartime League match at Ewood Park, with Bill Jones also scoring. 1894 - Malcolm McVean and Hugh McQueen netted as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield in a First Division meeting, the first time we had ever hosted Rovers. 1928 - Jimmy McDougall was on the scoresheet as Leeds United held us to a 1-1 draw, with Russell Wainscott scoring one of his five goals against the reds. 1934 - Alf Hanson netted twice as we won another top-flight encounter 3-0 at Elland Road, with future Leeds player Gordon Hodgson grabbing his 200th League goal for the reds. 2009 – David N’Gog bagged the only goal of our League Cup Third Round tie at Leeds as midfielder Jay Spearing made his first start for the reds. For the League 1971 - Emlyn Hughes and Chris Lawler both played for a Football League representative side that beat a League of Ireland team 2-1 in Dublin. Other reds games 1984 – Paul Walsh netted as we drew 1-1 at Manchester United. 1981 – We won 2-1 at Coventry City with Alan Kennedy bagging a rapid equaliser after we had fallen behind to a Gerry Daly goal in the first minute. Terry McDermott scored the winner from the spot. 1979 – Norwich City held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1973 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in L4. Martin Peters opened the scoring with one of his fourteen goals against the reds, before Chris Lawler equalised. Martin Chivers nabbed one of his seven goals past us. Pat Jennings saved a penalty from Emlyn Hughes but was judged to have left his line too early. Alec Lindsay converted the subsequent retake, with Chris Lawler netting the last-minute winner. 1956 – Dicky Robinson scored an own goal as we drew a Second Division encounter 1-1 at Middlesbrough, with Brian Clough bagging the first of his ten goals past us. 1923 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. On the move again 1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for Sheffield Wednesday from Oxford United for a nominal fee. He did not make a first-team appearance for the Owls. 2020 – Ex-reds winger Jordon Ibe signed for Derby County, having been released by Bournemouth the previous June. He only made one senior appearance before his contract was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of the season. On the same day, midfielder Luca Stephenson signed as a professional with the reds. Michael in international action 1999 – Michael Foley-Sheridan played for the Irish Under-16’s as they shared a goalless draw with Belgium in Dublin. 2003 – He featured for the Under-19’s as they beat Lithuania 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in San Marino. -
Goss makes history 1994 - Norwich City’s Jeremy Goss became the last player to score in front of the standing Kop as the Canaries won 1-0. Goss said: “I’ve put that day down as the proudest moment of my footballing career.” The very last person to score was actually Kopite John Garner who took to the field in an odd outfit that incorporated a fez, dodging stewards and coppers to net in front of those left long after the match had ended. For the 97 1989 - We played our first game since Hillsborough, at Celtic in aid of the Hillsborough Disaster Appeal. John Aldridge came off the bench to net a brace, to add to goals from Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush on an emotional day as the reds won 4-0. Not going to Moscow 2008 - We eventually lost 3-2 after extra time to Chelsea in the second leg of our Champions League Semi-final, having been held to a 1-1 draw in the Anfield meeting. Martin Škrtel had to be taken off injured early on, before Didier Drogba opened the scoring. Fernando Torres equalised to take the tie beyond the allotted three hours, but Frank Lampard then converted a spot-kick, one of his eight strikes past us, after substitute Sami Hyypiä had tripped Michael Ballack. Drogba added another of his eleven goals against the reds before Ryan Babel struck a late 35-yard consolation as we ended the Champions League campaign on 28 goals, the most of any club. This was his seventh goal from off the bench that season, equalling a club record, while John Arne Riise played his 348th and last reds game. Clinching the title 1966 - We clinched our seventh League title as Roger Hunt bagged a brace in our 2-1 defeat of Chelsea at Anfield despite a Bert Murray equaliser after an hour. 1988 - We also played the Blues, with John Barnes equalising with a 30-yard free-kick after Gordon Durie’s penalty at Stamford Bridge, one of his five strikes against the reds, in our first game since we clinched our seventeenth League title. Peter Beardsley had a late spot-kick saved that would have handed us victory. 1983 - We claimed our fourteenth championship with three games to play, despite Steve Archibald bagging two of his six goals past us in our 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, as our closest rivals Manchester United dropped points at Norwich City meaning that no team could catch us. 1927 - We also faced Spurs in the top flight, with Dick Edmed bagging the only goal of the game at Anfield. Digger the best 1988 - John Barnes was named as Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, to add to his PFA award. Alan Hansen finished as runner-up with 96% of the votes going to reds, and Barnes himself claiming two thirds of the nominations. 2000 - Sami Hyypiä and future red Harry Kewell were named in the PFA Team of the Year. Three-ton Mo 2023 – Mohamed Salah reached 300 reds appearances as we beat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield by the odd goal in seven. We raced into a three-goal lead through Curtis Jones, Luis Díaz and a Salah spot-kick. Harry Kane bagged the most recent of his nine goals past us before the break, with Son Heung-min netting one of his six against the reds in the second half. Ex-Toffee Richarlison nodded in a stoppage-time leveller, but Diogo Jota had the late, late final say. Happy birthdays 1931 – Left-winger Mervyn Jones was born in Bangor, one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches. He signed from Bangor City in November 1951, moving on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. 1991 – Former Icelandic reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson was born in Reykjavik. He joined the reds from AGF Århus in January 2009 but failed to make the first team, joining Hibernian two years later after a loan spell with Dagenham & Redbridge. Storming back to the top flight 1962 - Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court both struck in our 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic, bringing us to 68 League goals at Anfield for the season, a club record. We were presented with the Second Division title that day. Red centurions 2005 - John Arne Riise played his 200th reds game as Steven Gerrard equalised with a 35-yard thunderbolt past future reds stopper Brad Jones in a 1-1 League draw with Middlesbrough at Anfield. Szilárd Németh had given the visitors an early lead. 1949 – Albert Stubbins reached a century of reds outings, netting after Jack Balmer had opened the scoring late on as we won 2-0 at Burnley. For the Saint 1973 - A testimonial match for Ian St. John was staged as the reds beat Chelsea 4-2 at Anfield, with the Saint grabbing a brace and Brian Hall and Roger Hunt also netting. 1924 - We played in another testimonial, drawing 1-1 at Aberdeen in a game staged for the Dons’ Scottish international defender John Hutton. 1951 - Our other such game on this day saw Billy Liddell strike in a 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion, in a game in aid of Harry Baldwin, Jack Ball and Jack Dugnolle. Most recent wins 1986 - Our most recent first-class victory on this day was a 2-0 League win at Leicester City. Goals from Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan kept us on course for the double. 2022 – Naby Keïta struck the only goal of our League visit to Newcastle United, his last ever reds strike. Double farewell 1909 – Winger Jack Cox played his 361st and final reds game as we won 1-0 at Newcastle United, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck appearing for the 341st and last time. This result was enough to keep us in the top flight, thanks to a goal from ex-Toon inside-left ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr. He had bagged eighty goals since signing from Blackpool for £150 in December 1897, helping us to two League titles and the Second Division championship before returning to Bloomfield Road as Player/Manager that May. Ins and outs 2018 – The club announced that Assistant Manager Željko Buvač was to take a leave of absence for the rest of the season, with his departure later made permanent. 1906 – Full-back Percy Saul signed from Plymouth Argyle, netting twice in 83 reds games, moving on to Coventry City in July 1909. 1898 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck signed from Hibernian for £350. He played 341 times in eleven years, netting nineteen times and becoming our first skipper to lift the League title in 1901. He won a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship, returning to the club in 1939 as a scout until his death ten years later. 1897 – Inside-forward Willie Michael returned to Heart Of Midlothian. He had joined the reds from Tynecastle in May 1896, scoring five times in 23 reds games. 1894 – Keeper Billy McOwen left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool, as well as returning to his dentistry career, after eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances since arriving from Darwen in July 1892, helping us to claim the Second Division title. Glory for the kids 1996 - We took a step towards winning the FA Youth Cup for the first of three times to date. We won 2-0 at West Ham United, going on to win the return leg 2-1 at Anfield. Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen were both in the victorious side. Shanks at Wembley 1938 - Bill Shankly won an FA Cup winner’s medal as Preston North End beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 at Wembley thanks to a penalty in the last minute of extra time, making up for their defeat the year before. This was the first Final to be televised in its entirety. International debuts 2003 - Future reds midfielder Xabi Alonso made his senior international debut as Spain beat Ecuador 4-0 in a friendly in Madrid. Fellow future red Fernando Morientes grabbed a treble, taking him onto twenty senior international goals, after just 28 caps. 1997 - Bolo Zenden won his first cap for the Netherlands as they thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier. Other reds games 1977 – We beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at Anfield. Ray Kennedy and Kevin Keegan scored after the break, before future red John Wark netted the first of his four goals against the reds from the spot. 1960 – We defeated Sunderland 3-0 in L4 to finish our Second Division campaign in third. Dave Hickson, Roger Hunt and Jimmy Melia all scored. 1955 – Birmingham City held us to a 2-2 draw at home in the Second Division. Billy Liddell struck twice, including one from the spot as Gordon Astall netted for the Blues with Eddie Brown nabbing the last of his four against us. 1938 – We lost 1-0 at Arsenal. 1932 – Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace as we won 2-1 at Derby County. 1921 – Bolton Wanderers won 3-2 at Anfield despite taking a two-goal lead through Dick Johnson and Billy Lacey. Joe Smith struck two of his twelve goals past us, with David Jack netting the first of his nine. 1910 – Ronald Orr and Jack Parkinson were on target as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 in L4 to finish the season in second place behind the visitors. Keeper Sam Hardy suffered a wrist injury in the first half, so captain Arthur Goddard had to take his place between the sticks. Managerial ins and outs 2007 - Sammy Lee was named as Manager of Bolton Wanderers following the departure of Sam Allardyce. He was only given fourteen games in charge, of which they lost just four, before leaving the club by mutual consent that October. On the same day, Mark Wright was sacked as Chester City boss after fourteen months in charge of the League Two outfit following a poor run of form, with just one game of the season remaining. 2014 – Ex-reserves defender Phil Brazier left as Manager of Northern Premier League side Marine by mutual consent. 1982 - Roy Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Bristol City. He had originally joined as Bobby Houghton’s Assistant, but only lasted four months in the top job. Half a century for Gary Mac 1997 - Future red Gary McAllister won his fiftieth cap, captaining Scotland in their 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Sweden. Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Mark Kennedy, Jamie Redknapp, future reds Sami Hyypiä, Paul Ince, Jari Litmanen and Christian Ziege, and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all also represented their countries in qualifiers that day. Rushie yet again 1985 - Ian Rush scored in his third consecutive international, bagging a brace as Wales beat Spain 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Wrexham. Future red Mark Walters represented England Under-21’s on the same day. Djibril on target 2003 - Future red Djibril Cissé netted in France’s 5-0 friendly defeat of Egypt at the Stade de France. On the same day, Steve Finnan won his 22nd Republic of Ireland cap, and last as a Fulham player, in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Norway at Lansdowne Road. Ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen and future red Robbie Keane also played. Also on the international scoresheet that day were Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer as the Czech Republic beat Turkey 4-0 in Teplice. Ex-red Jari Litmanen netted in Finland’s 3-0 defeat of Iceland in Helsinki. Meanwhile, Salif Diao, Alou Diarra, El-Hadji Diouf, Sami Hyypiä, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Grégory Vignal, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Charles Itandje, Ragnar Klavan, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden, and ex-red Don Hutchison all also featured for their countries. 2001 – Future reds Le Tallec and Sinama-Pongolle both played as France Under-16’s beat Russia 2-0 in the Quarter-final of the European Championships Finals in York, on their way to reaching the Final. More farewells 1955 – Ex-reds forward Bert Goode died in Wrexham. He struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club in May 1908, moving on to Wrexham in June 1910. He scored 136 goals in 276 matches in his three spells at Wrexham, including playing in their first ever Football League match in August 1921, and is remembered as one of the greatest strikers in their history. 2011 – Australian keeper Dean Bouzanis left the club by mutual consent. He joined League One side Oldham Athletic seven months later. Player of the year 2008 - On-loan winger Paul Anderson was named Swansea City’s Young Player of the Year after helping them to the League One title. Also in international action 1952 – Billy Liddell played for Scotland as they thumped the USA 6-0 in a friendly at Hampden Park. 1980 – Future red Mark Lawrenson featured in Alan Kelly Senior’s only game as Republic of Ireland boss as they beat Switzerland 2-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. 1991 – Future red David James played as England Under-21’s drew a European Championships qualifier 2-2 in Turkey. 1993 – Future reds Assistant Manager Christian Damiano took charge of France Under-16’s in their 1-1 draw with Italy in a European Championships Finals group game in Istanbul. 1998 – Future red Milan Baroš featured as the Czech Republic Under-17’s lost a tournament game 2-1 to Sweden in Slovenia. 2002 – Future red Arnaud Bühler played for Switzerland Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 1-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark. On the same day, future red Carl Medjani captained France Under-17’s as they drew 0-0 with Ukraine in the same competition. 2004 – David Raven featured as England Under-19’s beat Denmark 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Slovenia. 2015 – Future red Kamil Grabara played for Poland Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat in Israel. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 3-0 to the Czech Republic. -
Kenny steps down 1991 - Kenny Dalglish announced his resignation as reds boss in a press conference at Anfield. He had been in charge for nearly six years, leading us to the double in his first season, and a further two League titles, FA Cup, two FA Charity Shields and Screen Sport Super Cup. The pressures of management, and his role in counselling players, supporters and the city of Liverpool in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster led to him stepping down. Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - We beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 at Anfield in the first leg of our Champions League round of sixteen tie. Luis García and John Arne Riise netted before Dietmar Hamann put us in a seemingly unassailable lead in stoppage time, with his eleventh and last reds goal. Anthony Le Tallec came off the bench to make his first senior appearance under Rafael Benítez. However, a Jerzy Dudek fumble handed Franca the chance to grab an away goal, which many commentators at the time felt might prove crucial. They were wrong. Spanish help against the Italians 2001 – We played an amazing UEFA Cup Fourth Round match against Roma at Anfield that we lost 1-0, although we still progressed to the Quarter-finals in a cauldron of noise. Michael Owen failed to convert his fifth penalty in eleven attempts as it was saved, and who could forget the penalty/corner incident when the ball struck Markus Babbel in the area? Fortunately, Spanish referee Jose Maria Garcia Aranda made the right decision! Uruguayan left-winger Gianni Guigou bagged the only goal of the game, with midfielder Damiano Tomassi sent off late on. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. 2004 - Michael Owen also had a penalty saved as we lost our FA Cup Fifth Round replay 1-0 at Portsmouth, with Richard Hughes on target. This was his eighth miss from 21 spot kicks. Jan the Welshman 1996 - Jan Mølby joined Swansea City as Player/Manager on a free transfer after nearly twelve years at Anfield. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark. 1992 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén played his 93rd and last reds game as we lost 3-0 at Norwich City. Robert Fleck bagged a brace with Colin Woodthorpe also on target. Half birthdays 1914 - Wing-half Tom Bush was born in Hodnet in Shropshire. He struck once in 69 reds appearances either side of the Second World War after signing from Shrewsbury Town in March 1933. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. A rare defeat 1986 - We suffered our only home League defeat of the season as Bruce Grobbelaar let a long-range Kevin Ratcliffe effort squirm through his grasp, with Gary Lineker also netting one of his six strikes past us to give reigning champions Everton a 2-0 win at Anfield, leaving the Blues eight points ahead of the reds. Jan Mølby played the first half as a make-shift striker in the absence through injury of both Kenny Dalglish and Paul Walsh. Red villains We have twice won 2-0 at Aston Villa on this day over the years. 1988 - The first occasion was in a live televised Fourth Round FA Cup tie on our way to the Final when John Barnes and Peter Beardsley scored, with Bruce Grobbelaar recalled in goal following an injury that had seen Mike Hooper fill in for the previous four fixtures, as we secured a club record ninth consecutive clean sheet. 1996 - Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler gave us a Premiership victory in a game postponed from Boxing Day. Deaths galore 1995 - Former Chairman Sir John Smith died of cancer in Gayton. He had overseen eleven League titles and four European Cups amongst our many honours during his seventeen years in charge of the club. 1965 – Full-back Percy Saul died. He signed from Plymouth Argyle in April 1906, netting twice in 83 reds games, moving on to Coventry City in July 1909. 1961 – Right-back General Stevenson passed on. He joined the reds from Padham in December 1897, playing 22 times without scoring before joining Barnsley in June 1900. No change of ownership 2007 - DIC abandoned their proposed £450m takeover of the club, after David Moores decided to reconsider his options in the light of a revised bid from George Gillett. Craig’s farewell 2012 - Craig Bellamy bagged his eighteenth and final reds goal after Andy Carroll had given us the lead at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dirk Kuyt then scored his fiftieth Premiership goal, our 500th League goal under Kenny Dalglish’s management to complete a 3-0 victory. On the same day, midfielder João Teixeira signed from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £830,000. He netted once in eight senior outings before moving on to Porto in July 2016. Derby stalemate 2004 - A very entertaining Anfield derby somehow ended goalless with Jerzy Dudek and especially Nigel Martyn pulling off a string of fine stops. Off on loan 2006 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, bagging just one goal in ten outings. He had only netted nine times in 66 reds games, although two thirds of these appearances came from off the bench. On the same day, reserves defender David Raven moved to Tranmere Rovers until the end of the season, after having only made four senior appearances for the reds. 2013 - Dani Pacheco joined S.D. Huesca on loan, netting five times in nineteen games. Other moves 1929 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid left Anfield for Manchester United after thirty goals in 55 reds games. He had signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926. 2013 – Second choice keeper Alexander Doni joined Botafogo on a free transfer, having not even made it to the bench that season after four first-team outings and 46 stints as an unused substitute in the previous campaign, having arrived on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011. He had to retire seven months later due to heart problems. On the same day, winger Victor Moses joined Wigan Athletic from Crystal Palace for £2.5m after the Eagles went into administration. He had struck eleven times in 69 games in south London. Also on the move that day was Stephen Warnock, who left Aston Villa for Leeds United on a free transfer after four goals in 104 matches for the Villains. Meanwhile, Mario Balotelli joined AC Milan from Manchester City for an initial £19m after thirty goals in eighty games for the Sky Blues. 2006 - Danny Murphy joined Tottenham Hotspur from Charlton Athletic for a fee of up to £2m, having struck ten times in 64 games for the Addicks. Former strikers break out their passports 2005 - Nicolas Anelka joined Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü from Manchester City for £7m. He struck fourteen times in 39 games for them before returning to England to join Bolton Wanderers in August 2006. Also on the move was ex-red Titi Camara who joined Ligue 2 side Amiens after two years in the Middle East. He bagged six goals in thirteen League games in his first season back in France. Wright in the wrong 2006 - Mark Wright was sacked as Manager of Peterborough United for gross misconduct, after failing to appear before the board. It is alleged that he made a racist comment to one of his staff, although he always denied the charge. Other reds games 2001 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City’s Maine Road with Emile Heskey bagging our goal. 1998 – Blackburn Rovers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1948 – We lost 3-0 to Portsmouth in L4, with Guy Wharton on target before Duggie Reid netted two of his six goals past the reds. 1931 – We drew 2-2 at Chelsea, with Gordon Gunson and Gordon Hodgson scoring. Future reds wartime guest George Mills bagged the first of his four goals against us, with Jackie Crawford also on target for the Blues. 1925 – Archie Rawlings netted the only goal of our FA Cup Second Round tie at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate. In comes Divock 2019 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed a new contract, just a few days after scoring in the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid. He netted 41 times in 175 outings before leaving at the end of the 2021/22 season, also helping us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. Bells rung out 2007 - Craig Bellamy was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m, the record fee paid by the Irons until Andy Carroll took the same path for £15.5m in June 2013. He had arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006 and was only a partial success in his first spell, grabbing nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. On the same day, reserves midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He made 35 senior appearances for the Trotters, netting just once, in his debut in a 2-1 League Cup Third Round victory at Fulham. Birth and death 1984 - Left-winger Mark González was born in Durban in South Africa. The Chilean international signed from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although he was not granted a work permit until the following July. He struck three times in 36 games, leaving the club in July 2007 to join Real Betis Balompié. 1983 – Forward Jimmy Collins died. He signed from Walsall in January 1936, failing to score in seven reds games before joining Cardiff City the following May, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. New skipper 2015 - Jordan Henderson was confirmed as the new club captain, following the departure of the legendary Steven Gerrard. On the same day, centre-half Martin Škrtel signed a new contract. Playing off 2010 – Future red Luis Suárez featured as Uruguay lost 3-2 to Germany in their World Cup Finals Third-place play-off in Port Elizabeth. 2011 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil were on the winning side as Germany Under-17’s beat Brazil 4-3 to finish third in the World Championship Finals in Mexico. This was Yeşil’s 21st and last cap at this level. Jonjo signs on 2012 – Midfielder Jonjo Shelvey signed a new contract. He struck seven times in 69 senior outings, since arriving from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010, moving on to Swansea City for an initial £5m fee in July 2013. Reds firsts 2001 - We faced Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a pre-season friendly in Lustenau, Austria, winning 3-2 thanks to a late deflected Jamie Redknapp free-kick, with strike pairing Michael Owen and Emile Heskey also netting. This was new signing John Arne Riise’s first outing for the reds. 2018 – Winger Rafa Camacho scored his only reds goal as we won a friendly 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers. Sheyi Ojo and Adam Lallana both also struck before the break to hand us a three-goal lead, with keeper Loris Karius at fault for one of the goals. Uncle Roy’s first capture 1994 - Michael Stensgaard became Roy Evans’ first signing as reds boss. The unlucky keeper was signed from Danish side Hvidovre, but never made a first team appearance, despite being named on the bench 28 times. After three years at Anfield, he moved on to Southampton for whom he also never played a first team game, before returning to his native Denmark, where he was forced into retirement after injuring himself with an ironing board! Doni saves 2007 – Future reds keeper Alexander Doni saved two spot-kicks in a penalty shoot-out that followed Brazil’s 2-2 draw with Uruguay in their Copa América Semi-final in Venezuela, winning 5-4 on penalties to reach the Final. 2019 - Sadio Mané featured as Senegal beat Benin 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Cairo. Missing out 2021 – Roberto Firmino featured as Brazil lost the Copa América Final 1-0 to Argentina in Rio de Janeiro. He was winning his last cap as a reds player. On the way out 2015 – Midfielder Jordan Williams joined Swindon Town on loan, with centre-half Lloyd Jones moving to Blackpool on a temporary basis on the same day. Williams turned out ten times, with Jones playing eleven first-team games while away from Anfield. 2013 – Michael Ngoo moved to Yeovil Town on loan, although this spell was ended prematurely after failing to score in seven appearances in his three months at Huish Park. 2009 – Reserves midfielder Ryan Flynn joined Falkirk on a temporary basis. However, he moved on to Brentford just six months later. 2021 – Young Polish keeper Jakub Ojrzynski signed a new contract with the reds. He has so far made it to the first-team bench once, at Sheffield United in February 2021. Ex-reds on the move 2018 – Fernando Torres signed for Sagan Tosu from Club Atlético de Madrid on a free transfer, only scoring four times in 32 outings before retiring from playing last month. 2009 – Midfielder Darren Potter joined Sheffield Wednesday from Wolverhampton Wanderers, having spent the second half of the previous season on loan with the Owls. He struck nine times in 106 games in all before moving to MK Dons in June 2011. 2008 – Winger Mark Kennedy signed for Cardiff City, having been released by Crystal Palace. He failed to score in 79 outings as they twice narrowly missed out on promotion, before joining Ipswich Town for £75,000 in July 2010, where he is now Under-21’s Manager. 2004 - Rigobert Song joined Galatasaray from Racing Club de Lens for £1m, helping them to two League titles and the Turkish Cup before joining Trabzonspor in 2008. On the same day, Andy Parkinson, who was in our victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, joined Grimsby Town on a free transfer from Sheffield United. He played 95 times for the Mariners, notching thirteen times, before moving on to Notts County in June 2006. 1996 - Ex-loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Watford from Sunderland for £40,000. He is now coaching at Vicarage Road, having made 288 appearances for the Hornets. Death of a legend 2002 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins died. He struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, and became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. 2010 – Israeli defender Avi Cohen died in Tel-Aviv, following a motorcycle crash. He was actually born in Egypt, and only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career after signing for £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv in July 1979, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. 2021 – Scouse forward Steve Peplow died. He joined the reds in June 1964, turning pro in January 1966 on his seventeenth birthday. He struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. He left for Swindon Town in June 1971 after a successful loan spell there. Two off at Goodison 2005 - Our away derby ended in a 3-1 win with Phil Neville and Mikel Arteta both sent off for the Blues. Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cissé struck our goals, with James Beattie netting for the home side. Sami’s last strike 2008 – We trounced Newcastle United 5-1 at St. James’ Park, with Sami Hyypiä heading his 35th and last reds goal to add to a Steven Gerrard strike as Shay Given pulled off a series of stunning saves. David Edgar unjustly headed the home side back into contention before the break, with Ryan Babel and Gerrard netting in the second half before Xabi Alonso completed the rout from the spot. A heavenly milestone 1999 - Robbie Fowler scored his 150th reds goal, in just 260 games, as we won 3-1 at home to Wimbledon. Michael Owen and Patrick Berger were also on target. Second time lucky 1977 – Phil Neal converted a penalty at the second attempt, after keeper Paul Bradshaw was adjudged to have moved before the kick was taken. We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at Anfield. Solitary goals 1991 - Nicky Tanner bagged his only reds goal as we held Everton to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, with Mo Johnston netting for the Blues. 1909 – Inside-left Bert Goode netted his only reds strike as we lost 4-2 at Sheffield United, having been four goals down. John McDonald grabbed our other goal as forward Jack Parkinson played his hundredth League game for us. This was Goode’s seventh and last game for us, while forward Joe Hewitt was making his 164th and final appearance for the club. Joe Kitchen netted the first two of his eight goals against us, with keeper Augustus Beeby also saving one of his spot-kicks. Wally Hardinge also bagged a brace, the first of his four against the reds. Due to rain, both sides changed their strips at half time, with the reds emerging in more of a pink shade after the break! Alan A’Court and Roger Hunt were on target. 1903 – Keeper Charles Cotton made the first of his thirteen reds appearances as we lost 4-2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Jack Parkinson and Alex Raisbeck struck our goals, while Billy Wooldridge bagged a treble, the last of his five goals past us, with Adam Haywood also scoring for the home side. City three times 2003 - We played our first game at Manchester City’s new City Of Manchester Stadium. Vladimír Šmicer scored our 250th League goal against City, a header that was missed by the TV cameras. Nicolas Anelka had put the home side in front with one of his five goals past us, but Didi Hamann also struck to give us the lead before another ex-red, Robbie Fowler, nabbed a very late goal as the game ended 2-2. Jon Otsemobor played his sixth and final reds game. We have also twice recently hosted City at Anfield 1992 – We were held to a 1-1 draw when Ian Rush struck our goal and Niall Quinn struck for the visitors. 1994 - Robbie Fowler netted as we won 2-0, with our first strike being a Terry Phelan own goal. Most recently 2021 - Mohamed Salah had an early penalty saved as we lost 1-0 at Leicester City, with Ademola Lookman scoring with the Foxes’ only shot on target. Fined 2011 – The club was fined £20,000 by the FA and warned as to their future conduct for “failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion” during the League game at Fulham earlier in the month, following Jay Spearing’s sending off. On the same day, Luis Suárez was banned for one match and fined £20,000 after he admitted an FA charge of improper conduct relating to the same match. Stevie on and off again 1998 - Steven Gerrard came on as a substitute for Steve McManaman who had been hurt by future red Dietmar Hamann, later himself being replaced by David Thompson after being injured in a challenge with Stuart Pearce, as we staged a comeback to beat Newcastle United 4-2 at Anfield. Michael Owen and Karlheinz Riedle both netted braces, while Hamann was sent off for two bookable offences. Nobby Solano struck the first of his four goals against us, with Andreas Andersson then putting the visitors two goals ahead. Jason McAteer played his hundredth and last League game for the reds. We have beaten the Geordie outfit twice more on this day in history. 1987 - John Aldridge struck a brace, including a penalty, as we won 4-0 at Anfield, with Steve McMahon and Ray Houghton also on the scoresheet. This was our 23rd consecutive unbeaten League game, and the seventh time we had racked up four goals that season. 1997 - We won 2-1 on Tyneside, with Steve McManaman nabbing both our goals and future Blue Steve Watson on target for the home side. Scales for the wrong side 1993 - Future red John Scales scored an own goal as Wimbledon held us to a 1-1 draw, with John Fashanu netting at Anfield for the third consecutive season in the League, the last of his six strikes against the reds. We had already benefited from an own goal against the Dons in a League Cup tie exactly two weeks earlier. Rob Jones reached a century of reds games that day. Thumping wins 1893 - We beat Crewe Alexandra 5-0 at Nantwich Road in a Second Division match with Harry Bradshaw, Patrick Gordon, David Henderson, Hugh McQueen and Malcolm McVean all scoring. 1918 - We trounced Burnley 7-0 at Anfield in a Wartime League game. John Miller bagged a treble, with Harry Lewis netting a brace, and Reginald Phillips and Walter Wadsworth also on target. Signing on 2004 - Dietmar Hamann signed a new two-year contract. He nabbed eleven goals in 283 appearances for the reds in total, helping us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield after signing from Newcastle United for £8m in July 1999, but moved on to Manchester City in July 2006 after a bizarre detour to Bolton Wanderers. 2022 – Forward Cody Gakpo agreed to sign from PSV Eindhoven in January for a reported initial £40m. He struck seven times in 26 appearances in his first half-season with the reds. Management appointments 2007 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Fulham, taking over two days later with the side in the relegation zone.
