Another Rushie treble 1984 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick past the young Nigel Spink on a frozen Villa Park pitch, as we came from behind to win 3-1 in a live Friday night BBC game, in front of 19,566 hardy fans. Scouser Dennis Mortimer struck the Villains’ consolation. 1934 - We also visited Villa Park, when right-back Bob Done bagged his thirteenth and final reds goal with Syd Roberts also on target as we lost 3-2. Tom Waring struck two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Dix nabbing the first of his four past us. Birth and death 1994 - Former reds right-half Sir Matt Busby died. He, of course, went on to far greater fame down the East Lancs Road, but in his time at Anfield he captained the reds, and struck three times in 122 first-team appearances before the Second World War, as well as another goal in 26 wartime outings. 1869 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was born in Renton. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Champions defeated 2007 - We beat Chelsea convincingly, 2-0, thanks to an early Dirk Kuyt strike and Jermaine Pennant’s first reds goal. This secured Rafael Benítez’s 56th win in his hundredth League game in charge, so equalling Bill Shankly’s record. This was also Jose Mourinho’s hundredth League match as Chelsea boss. Later that day, celebrated reds fan Dr. Fun, whose real name was Lenny Campbell, sadly died in hospital aged 63, following a bout of cancer. 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by the Blues in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Eden Hazard opened the scoring from the spot, one of his seven goals past us to date, with Raheem Sterling netting a second-half equaliser. A great start from Sam 1900 - Sam Raybould scored after thirty seconds, but we were eventually beaten 3-1 in the Goodison derby, as the Blues completed a League double. This was his first reds goal, while Jimmy Settle netted two of his eleven goals against the reds as Joe Blythe also scored. Red centurions 2010 – Lucas Leiva played his hundredth reds game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, with a fans’ guard of honour greeting the team coach on its way into Anfield. Dirk Kuyt scored a twice-taken penalty in the final minute, having opened the scoring early on. 1962 – Roger Hunt reached a century of games for the club in our 1-1 Second Division draw at Sc***horpe United, when Ian St. John netted our goal. Youngest in the cup 2016 - Sheyi Ojo became our youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer in our 3-0 Third Round replay win at Exeter City, aged 18 years and 215 days, with both he and midfielder João Teixeira bagging their only reds goals. Left-back José Enrique skippered the side for the only time while playing centre-half, with Joe Allen having opened the scoring. Two-ton Andy 2022 – Andy Robertson played his 200th game for the reds as we won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final 2-0 at Arsenal to reach the Final thanks to a Diogo Jota brace. Right-back Neco Williams featured for the 33rd and last time, with Thomas Partey sent off for the home side in the final minute. Marching on together 1996 - Gary Kelly was sent off for Leeds United for bringing down Rob Jones in the area with the score 1-0 at Anfield. Robbie Fowler converted the resulting spot-kick, the first penalty we had been awarded in 41 matches. We eventually romped home 5-0, our equal record victory over the Whites. Robbie Fowler scored a second with Neil Ruddock also bagging a brace and Stan Collymore also on target. Failure at last 1973 - John Toshack struck as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Anfield, after Roger Davies had bagged the first of his five goals against the reds. This ended a run of 21 consecutive home League wins, still a top-flight record. This was Tosh’s final goal of the season in all competitions, although he still finished as our joint top scorer in the League with thirteen strikes. Steve Heighway played his hundredth League game for the reds. More derby despair We have lost both the Anfield derbies played on this day in history. 1912 - Sam Gilligan struck as we went down 3-1. Tommy Browell scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Frank Jefferies and George Beare also on target. 1951 - We were beaten 2-0 as Jimmy McIntosh bagged his only two derby goals, although he had previously scored for times past us with Blackpool. Forward Don Woan played his second and final reds game. Michael on target 1998 - Michael Owen struck the only goal of the game as we beat Newcastle United at Anfield in game that was postponed from the previous August, following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. Signing on 1909 – Full-back Bob Crawford signed from Arthurlie. He played 115 times for the reds, netting once in a career badly interrupted by injury. 1926 – Outside-right Dick Edmed signed from Gillingham for £1,800. He scored 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday. 2006 - John Arne Riise signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2009. He made 348 first-team appearances in total, notching 31 times. In his time with the club, he helped us to claim the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields before moving to Roma for £4m in June 2008. A new breeding ground 1999 - The new Academy was officially opened in Kirkby, seven miles from Anfield. On the same day, future red Nicolas Anelka played for France as they beat Morocco 1-0 in a friendly in Marseille. Stevie honoured 2013 - Steven Gerrard was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Award at the Savoy Hotel in London. He followed Bob Paisley in 1984 and Kenny Dalglish in 1987 as the club’s only winners of this trophy. Raw Venison 1982 - Barry Venison signed as a professional for Sunderland. He played more than two hundred games for the Wearsiders, including the 1985 Milk Cup Final, before moving to Anfield for £200,000 in July 1986. All wrong for Wright 1990 – Crystal Palace’s Ian Wright broke his leg as we won 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley both netted as we completed a League double over the Eagles after our 9-0 triumph the previous September. In African action 2022 – Ex-reds loanee Steven Caulker played for Sierra Leone as they lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cameroon. 2015 – Kolo Touré played as Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with future red Naby Keïta’s Guinea in group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s as they thumped the Czech Republic 6-0 in a tournament game. 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured in another group game as Mali beat Niger 1-0 in South Africa. 2002 – Ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 defeat of DR Congo in Mali. On the same day, future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played in Senegal’s 1-0 defeat of Egypt in another group game. 2001 – Future red Touré appeared in a qualifier as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 2-0 in Bouaké. Other reds games 2001 – Middlesbrough held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1968 – Geoff Strong and Ron Yeats both scored with their head as we beat Southampton 2-0 in L4. 1923 – We beat Boro 2-0 at Ayresome Park, with Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson on the scoresheet. 1906 – We defeated Sunderland 2-0 in a First Division match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Joe Hewitt and John Carlin, in a game that also acted as a benefit game for right-half Maurice Parry. Also on the move 2023 – Young defender Jarell Quansah joined Bristol Rovers on loan, making sixteen senior appearances while with the Pirates. On the same day, Danny Ings joined West Ham United from Aston Villa for an initial £12m, having struck fourteen times in 52 outings since arriving from Southampton for a £25m fee in August 2021. 2017 – Forward Michael Ngoo joined Oldham Athletic from Bromley on a free transfer. 2014 – Young Portuguese centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Granada in Spain on loan, playing nine games there. 2011 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Barnsley for £500,000. He scored once in 27 games before moving to Huddersfield Town in June 2013 after a successful loan spell there. 2005 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined Rangers from Panathinaikos for £1.75m. He struck five times in 57 outings while in Scotland, helping them to claim the League title and League Cup, bagging a brace in their Final defeat of Motherwell later that year. He was released in May 2006. 1995 - Steve Nicol joined Notts County as a Player/Coach on a free transfer. He made 37 appearances for the Magpies before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday after County were relegated. 1998 - Ex-reserves defender Barry Jones joined York City from Wrexham for £40,000. He made 134 League appearances before joining Southport in 2001. Also in international action 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-15’s in their 3-1 defeat by Japan. 2009 – Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay in the Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" as they drew 1-1 with Brazil in Venezuela. 2017 – Midfielder Allan played in the South American Championships for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 0-0 with Chile in Ecuador. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they lost an African Nations Championship group game 1-0 to Angola in Morocco. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez featured as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Ecuador 3-1 in the South American Championships in Chile. -
Happy birthdays 1951 – Forward David Johnson was born in Liverpool. The ex-Blue arrived from Ipswich Town in August 1976 for a club record £200,000 fee, and went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. 1993 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho was born in Campinas. He signed from Monaco for an initial £39m in July 2018, scoring eleven times in 219 outings before moving on to Al-Ittihad for a reported £40m last July. He helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 1974 - Sander Westerveld was born in Enschede. The Dutch keeper made 103 reds appearances, helping us to five trophies in 2001 before being replaced by Jerzy Dudek, moving to Real Sociedad for £3.49m that December. He is now coaching for Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, where he ended his playing career. 1992 – Reserves forward Michael Ngoo was born in Walthamstow. He signed from Southend United in September 2009 for a potential fee of up to £250,000. He was released last summer after several loan spells away from Anfield, signing for Kilmarnock in August 2014. Debutants 1993 - Dominic Matteo made his reds bow in our 1-1 draw at Manchester City, when Ian Rush netted a late equaliser after David White had opened the scoring with the last of his five strikes past us. 1991 - Jamie Redknapp made his debut at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps as we lost 2-0 to Auxerre in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie with Bruce Grobbelaar in fine form to keep the score down. 1937 - Forwards Willie Fagan and John Shafto both debuted in our 1-1 draw with Leicester City, with Alf Hanson on target for the reds at Anfield. 1926 - We also entertained the Foxes in the First Division, when Harry Chambers netted the only goal of the game very late on. Milestone games 1971 - Ian Callaghan played his 500th reds game as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 in a League match at Anfield. Tommy Smith had a penalty saved by keeper David Lawson but he reacted quickly to score from the rebound, with Alun Evans also on target. 1909 – Forward Jack Parkinson bagged a brace as he reached a century of reds outings as we beat The Wednesday 3-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy Stewart also netting. Sam Kirkman struck the first of his four goals past us. 1976 – Ray Kennedy scored as we drew 1-1 with Leeds United at Elland Road, with Phil Neal making the first of his club record 417 consecutive appearances. Off the mark 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall nabbed his only two reds goals as we beat Derby County 4-2 at Anfield after Joe McQue and Dan Cunliffe had also struck. Steve Bloomer struck one of his fourteen goals against us, with Alexander Maconnachie also on target for the Rams. Against the Addicks We have faced Charlton Athletic twice on this day in history 1996 – We returned from Selhurst Park with a 1-1 League Cup Third Round draw when Robbie Fowler grabbed our goal. 2004 - John Arne Riise and Luis García struck as we won our Premiership meeting 2-0. This was our 2,000th League match at Anfield. Keeping ends 1999 - Brad Friedel played his 31st and final reds game in our 1-1 draw at Southampton. Titi Camara grabbed our late equaliser after Norwegian midfielder Trond Egil Soltvedt had netted. 1920 - Goalkeeper Harry McNaughton played his only reds game, helping us to a home derby victory. Dick Forshaw nabbed the only goal of the game. Also in Europe 2019 – We won 4-1 at Koninklijke Racing Club Genk in the UEFA Champions League group stage with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netting either side of half time. Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah both scored late on before Stephen Odey grabbed a late consolation. 1974 - We entertained Hungarians Ferencvárosi when Kevin Keegan struck as we were held to a draw in the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, with keeper István Géczi in outstanding form. The visitors bagged a very late equaliser through Mate that eventually saw us crash out at this Second Round stage on the away goals rule. Egged 1965 – We lost 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion. During the game, a hard-boiled egg was thrown onto the pitch, which Tommy Smith handed over to the referee, who stopped the game while he spoke to the police, with a loudspeaker announcement threatening to call off the game. Tony Brown opened the scoring with the first of his eight goals past us, with Clive Clark bagging one of his seven and John Kaye one of his four as centre-half Ron Yeats played his 200th reds game. Ex-reds in charge 1993 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of Coventry City following the resignation of Bobby Gould. He remained in the post for sixteen months, only losing twenty of his 67 games in charge. His major legacy to the club was selling Phil Babb to the reds, and signing Dion Dublin, as well as ex-red Mike Marsh. 2006 - Paul Ince was appointed Player/Manager of Macclesfield Town. He led them to fourteen victories in 35 games and remained in charge until June 2007, when he left to take over at MK Dons. 1998 - Nigel Clough signed for Burton Albion from Manchester City as Player/Manager. He led them into the Conference, moving on to take over at Derby County in January 2009. 2013 – Clough was appointed Manager of Sheffield United, leading them to an eleventh-place finish in League One and the FA Cup Semi-Final in his first season in charge. Gordon for the FA 1963 - Gordon Milne turned out for an England side as they faced a Rest of the World eleven in an FA Centenary game at Wembley, winning 2-1. Up against the Shakers 1915 - We lost 2-1 at Gigg Lane in a Wartime League match with Fred Pagnam grabbing our consolation. 1954 - Bury held us to a 1-1 draw in our Second Division meeting, with Eric Anderson on the scoresheet. Stan Pearson struck one of his eleven goals against the reds. Beating Boro 1948 - Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins struck as we beat Middlesbrough 4-0 in a top-flight meeting at Anfield. Billy Liddell converted a penalty, with the scoring completed by a Billy Whitaker own goal. 2013 – Ex-reds centre-half Daniel Ayala joined Middlesbrough on loan from Norwich City, making the move permanent three months later for £350,000. Farewells 1915 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie died in Glasgow. He signed from Everton for £150 in February 1912, but only managed to score five times in 34 appearances for the reds, returning north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian in May 1914. 1911 – Outside-right Andrew Kelvin died aged just 42. He signed from his hometown club Kilmarnock in 1892, returning there after just six reds games the following year. 1870 – Scottish half-back Tom Cleghorn died. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02, ending his career with Plymouth Argyle. 2017 - Jörg Schmadtke resigned as Co-CEO Sports for 1. FC Köln Ltd, having been in the role since June 2013. He took over as the reds’ Sporting Director in May 2023. Other reds game 1982 – Mark Lawrenson was on target as we drew 1-1 at Stoke City with Mickey Thomas scoring a spectacular equaliser. Youngsters in action 2018 - Future red Jakub Ojrzyński debuted for Poland Under-16’s in their 4-1 friendly win over Austria. 2015 – Herbie Kane won his fifteenth and last cap for England Under-17’s as they drew 0-0 with South Korea in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2010 - Adam Morgan, Matty Regan and Raheem Sterling all featured as England Under-17’s beat Poland 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Georgia. 2002 – Future reds coach Gary O’Neil scored on his debut for England Under-20’s as they won a friendly 2-1 in Germany. Michael is officially the best 2000 - Michael Owen was named the Premiership’s Young Player of the Month for September. He had scored six goals during the month, including a hat-trick against Aston Villa, and he was the unanimous choice of the League Managers’ Association to secure the award. -
Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus! 1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. Foxes run off with the points again 1964 - Leicester City came out on top for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time winning 1-0, with Mike Stringfellow nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. 1962 - We also lost, going down 3-0 at Filbert Street. Beginnings and end 1955 - Richard Money was born in Lowestoft. The defender spent two years at Anfield after signing from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980 but was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 2002 – Midfielder Tom Hill was born in Formby. He made his senior debut in our League Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, signing a new contract in August 2020. 1936 - Forward Bob McDougall died. Into Europe 1965 - We reached the First Round proper of the European Cup Winners’ Cup when first-half goals from Chris Lawler and a Geoff Strong 25-yard screamer handed us a 2-0 Anfield victory over Juventus, to progress 2-1 on aggregate. Firsts and last 1956 – Forward Eric Anderson played his 76th and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 2-1 at Bristol City, with Johnny Wheeler bagging his first reds goal. 1900 – Right-half Maurice Parry debuted as Bolton Wanderers lost 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Cox netted with Charlie Satterthwaite nabbing the winner, although he had to be carried off as a result of a collision with Trotters’ keeper John Sutcliffe. Four for young Mickey 1996 - Michael Owen grabbed all four goals as England Under-18’s beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier at York City’s Bootham Crescent. 2010 – Michael Ngoo struck as England Under-19’s lost 2-1 to Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Visé. Skipper Jonjo Shelvey had a penalty saved, while Andre Wisdom also featured. Misery on the South coast We have twice lost to Southampton at The Dell on this day in history. 1973 - We went down to a 1-0 defeat in a top-flight encounter, with Mick Channon on target with one of his seven strikes past us. 1999 - We lost 2-1 in a Third Round League Cup tie when Michael Owen put us ahead to reach a half century of goals for the club before the home side scored through Dean Richards and Trond Egil Soltvedt. Managerial moves 2007 - It was announced that Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was to step down from his role, although he remained contracted to the club until June 2008. Chief Executive Rick Parry said, “The club want to thank Pako for his hard work and contribution to our success over the past three years.” 2014 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Manager of England Under-16’s. He later took charge of the Under-17’s, leading them to victory in the World Cup Finals in India in October 2017. Goals galore 1917 - We trounced Preston North End 6-0 in a Wartime League match at Deepdale, with Arthur Metcalf grabbing a brace and Jack Waine, Thomas Bennett, Harry Lewis and John Bamber also scoring. 1934 - We beat Birmingham City by the odd goal in nine in a First Division match at Anfield, with our goals coming from Vic Wright, Jimmy McDougall, Sam English and a Gordon Hodgson brace, which included a penalty. Dave Mangnall bagged a treble for the visitors, the last three of his seven goals against the reds, with his second being the 2,000th we had conceded in the top flight, with Harold Booton also netting. 1951 - Jimmy Payne struck twice with John Smith and Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we beat Fulham 4-0 in another top-flight fixture in L4. Tommy’s treble 1926 – Tommy Reid struck a hat-trick as we thumped Barrow 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson adding a brace. International beginnings and ends 2015 – Future reds keeper Alisson Becker won his first senior cap for Brazil in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Venezuela in Fortaleza as Red Bull Salzburg’s Takumi Minamino made his Japan debut in their 1-1 friendly draw in Iran. Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played for England Under-19’s in a European Championships qualifier on the same day, with future red Marko Grujic playing for Serbia Under-21’s. 2013 – Future reds Charles Itandje and Joël Matip both played as Cameroon drew the first leg of their World Cup play-off 0-0 in Tunisia. 1998 - Frode Kippe won his last Under-21’s cap as a Lillestrøm player as Norway beat Albania 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Drammen. 2019 – Dejan Lovren won his last cap as a reds player as Croatia drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Wales, with Harry Wilson and ex-red Joe Allen featuring for the home side. Andy Robertson captained a Scotland side managed by ex-red Steve Clarke, with Gini Wijnaldum bagging a brace as the Netherlands won a qualifier 2-1 in Belarus. Ex-red Emre Can was sent off as Germany won 3-0 in Estonia, with Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, future reds Arthur Melo and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Ryan Babel, Christian Benteke, Philippe Coutinho and Péter Gulácsi also in action. 2018 – Emre Can won his first cap since moving to Juventus, with skipper Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum both on target as the Netherlands beat Germany 3-1 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Amsterdam. Owen Beck won his only Under-17’s cap as Wales lost 1-0 to Kazakhstan in Portugal. Ex-reds Ryan Babel and Martin Škrtel both also played in the competition that day, with Academy keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle, Sadio Mané and future reds Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai all also in international action as Abel Xavier took charge of Mozambique. International reds on target 2014 – Luis Suárez bagged his first two goals for Uruguay as a Barcelona player as they won a friendly 3-0 in Oman, while Xherdan Shaqiri bagged his last goal while playing for Bayern München as Switzerland won a European Championships qualifier 4-0 in San Marino. A legend gets off the mark 1981 - Ian Rush scored his first two reds League goals to help us to a 3-0 home win over Leeds United, along with a Trevor Cherry own goal. 1925 - We also faced Leeds, with Fred Baron netting in a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Full-back James Garner played his fifth and final reds game. Russell Wainscott struck one of his five goals against the reds in this match. Births and a death 1991 - Xherdan Shaqiri was born in Gjilan, then part of SFR Yugoslavia, and now in Kosovo. He signed from relegated Stoke City in July 2018 for £12.85m, netting eight times in 63 appearances and helping us to claim our first League title for thirty years and the FIFA Club World Cup, moving on to Olympique Lyonnais for €6m in August 2021. 1983 - Former reserves defender Andrew Nicholas was born in Liverpool. He could not break through to our first team and moved on to Swindon Town in July 2003. 1950 – Bobby Robinson died. He moved to the reds from his hometown club Sunderland for £500 in February 1904. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, also helping us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913. Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his senior debut in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. Happy birthday Marks 1957 - Mark Lawrenson was born in Preston. He joined us for a then-record fee of £900,000 from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1981, going on to make 356 appearances, netting eighteen times while helping us to win four League titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the FA Charity Shield and Screen Sport Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before taking over as Oxford United boss in March 1988. 1964 - Mark Everton Walters was born in Birmingham. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991, as he remained on the bench for both the 1992 FA Cup Final and League Cup Final in 1995. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United in April 1992, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991. He left Anfield to join Southampton on a free transfer in January 1996. 1867 - David Ashworth was born in Poulton-le-Fylde. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1948 – Full-back Stuart Mason was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire. He signed with left-back Peter Wall from Wrexham for a combined £35,000, never managing to make the first team. He went on to make over a century of League appearances for both Wrexham and Chester. In comes Titi 1999 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara signed from Marseille for £2.6m. He scored ten times in 37 reds games, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died. He joined the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. More arrivals 2014 – Kirkby-born forward Rickie Lambert signed from Southampton for an initial £4m, although he only managed to strike three times in 36 outings across his one season with the reds, with only twelve of these being starts. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. 1997 - Attacking midfielder Øyvind Leonhardsen signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He stayed at Anfield for two years, making 49 appearances, many in an uncomfortable left-sided role. He scored seven times before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £3m in August 1999. 1923 – Inside-forward Billy McDevitt signed from Swansea Town, being converted into a centre-half, but played just four times before moving on to Exeter City for a club record fee in May 1925. Edging towards the title 1947 - We moved to within touching distance of our fifth League title as our 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers took us one point clear of both Wolves and Manchester United, in our final game of the season. Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins bagged our goals before the break while Wolves legend Stan Cullis, who had guested for the reds during the war, played his final ever game for the club. Jimmy Dunn scored the first of his four goals past us in the second half. Curiously Manager George Kay was absent as he was on a five-day scouting mission in Ireland. Our first European triumph 1973 - We lost 2-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach with Jupp Heynckes getting both goals inside ten first-half minutes. However, that was enough to secure the UEFA Cup for the first time, as we had won the first leg 3-0 at Anfield two weeks before. We therefore became the first English side to claim the League title and a European trophy in the same season. Athens despair 2007 - We lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Athens thanks to a Pippo Inzaghi brace, with Bolo Zenden playing his 47th and final reds game. Dirk Kuyt headed our late consolation, his first goal in Europe for us. Keeping on track for a title showdown 1989 - Ray Houghton netted a brace, with John Aldridge, Ian Rush and John Barnes also on target as we beat West Ham United 5-1 at Anfield, our 24th consecutive game without defeat, just three days after our emotional FA Cup Final win, to keep us on course for our second double in four years. Penalty shoot-out despair 1996 - Future red Jari Litmanen scored for Ajax in the UEFA Champions League Final as their match with Juventus ended 1-1 in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. David Luiz gave the visitors the lead with an opportunistic free-kick, with Gini Wijnaldum heading in after the break. 1920 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 200th reds game as we won an FA Cup Second Round tie 2-0 at Luton Town thanks to a brace from Billy Lacey. Final strikes 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum bagged his 22nd and last goal for the club as we won 3-1 behind closed doors at West Ham United, after Mohamed Salah had nabbed a brace. 1959 – We beat Charlton Athletic 3-2 at The Valley as we fell behind to a John Hewie strike and Ronnie Moran own goal before left-half Geoff Twentyman missed a penalty for the reds. Twentyman pulled a goal back, his nineteenth and last for the club, with Fred Morris and Jimmy Melia scoring in the second half to secure the Second Division points. Red villains We have twice won 2-0 at Aston Villa on this day over the years. 1988 - The first occasion was in a live televised Fourth Round FA Cup tie on our way to the Final when John Barnes and Peter Beardsley scored, with Bruce Grobbelaar recalled in goal following an injury that had seen Mike Hooper fill in for the previous four fixtures, as we secured a club record ninth consecutive clean sheet. 1996 - Stan Collymore and Robbie Fowler gave us a Premiership victory in a game postponed from Boxing Day. Deaths galore 1995 - Former Chairman Sir John Smith died of cancer in Gayton. In comes Divock 2019 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed a new contract, just a few days after scoring in the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid. He netted 41 times in 175 outings before leaving at the end of the 2021/22 season, also helping us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. Bells rung out 2007 - Craig Bellamy was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m, the record fee paid by the Irons until Andy Carroll took the same path for £15.5m in June 2013. He had arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006 and was only a partial success in his first spell, grabbing nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. On the same day, reserves midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. Birth and death 1984 - Left-winger Mark González was born in Durban in South Africa. The Chilean international signed from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although he was not granted a work permit until the following July. He struck three times in 36 games, leaving the club in July 2007 to join Real Betis Balompié. 1983 – Forward Jimmy Collins died. Reds firsts 2001 - We faced Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a pre-season friendly in Lustenau, Austria, winning 3-2 thanks to a late deflected Jamie Redknapp free-kick, with strike pairing Michael Owen and Emile Heskey also netting. This was new signing John Arne Riise’s first outing for the reds. 2018 – Winger Rafa Camacho scored his only reds goal as we won a friendly 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers. Sheyi Ojo and Adam Lallana both also struck before the break to hand us a three-goal lead, with keeper Loris Karius at fault for one of the goals. Uncle Roy’s first capture 1994 - Michael Stensgaard became Roy Evans’ first signing as reds boss. The unlucky keeper was signed from Danish side Hvidovre, but never made a first team appearance, despite being named on the bench 28 times. After three years at Anfield, he moved on to Southampton for whom he also never played a first team game, before returning to his native Denmark, where he was forced into retirement after injuring himself with an ironing board! Doni saves 2007 – Future reds keeper Alexander Doni saved two spot-kicks in a penalty shoot-out that followed Brazil’s 2-2 draw with Uruguay in their Copa América Semi-final in Venezuela, winning 5-4 on penalties to reach the Final. 2019 - Sadio Mané featured as Senegal beat Benin 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Cairo. Missing out 2021 – Roberto Firmino featured as Brazil lost the Copa América Final 1-0 to Argentina in Rio de Janeiro. He was winning his last cap as a reds player. On the way out 2015 – Midfielder Jordan Williams joined Swindon Town on loan, with centre-half Lloyd Jones moving to Blackpool on a temporary basis on the same day. Double debutants 1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Ronnie Whelan played his 200th League game for the reds that day. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting eighteen times in 146 appearances before being released earlier this summer. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and helping us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Clem departs 1981 – Ray Clemence was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He had arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields in his fourteen years at Anfield. Also moving on 1974 - Centre-half Larry Lloyd was sold to Coventry City for £240,000. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. 1976 – Kevin Keegan confirmed that the upcoming season would be his final one at Anfield. He struck twenty times in 57 outings in this campaign, helping us to claim the European Cup and League title, and reach the FA Cup Final. 1991 – David Speedie left the reds to join Blackburn Rovers. He had struck six times in fourteen outings since signing from Coventry City for £675,000 seven months earlier. Dismissals galore 2010 – Joe Cole was sent off for a challenge on Laurent Koscielny just before half-time in our Anfield meeting with Arsenal. David N’Gog put us in front immediately after the break, with the lead lasting until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Pepe Reina spilled the rebound into his own net. Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. This turned out to be Javier Mascherano’s 139th and final reds game. 2022 - Darwin Núñez was dismissed in our 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. He signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015. 1905 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid was born in Motherwell. He signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926 and bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929. Off the mark 2017 – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first senior goal as we won 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League qualifier. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty, with forward Dominic Solanke making his reds bow as we benefited when Havard Nordtveit inadvertently diverted a James Milner cross into his own net. 2007 - Yossi Benayoun made his reds debut as Andriy Voronin’s first reds strike proved to be the only goal of the first leg of our Champions League qualifier in Toulouse, who became our hundredth different opponents in European competition. Happy birthday Boudewijn 1976 - Bolo Zenden was born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He signed on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury hampered his career at Anfield. He helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as reach the Champions League Final in his brief time with the reds. Bolo left the club in July 2007 to join Olympique de Marseille. 2021 – Former Director Terry Smith died at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead. He was on the board from 1992 until 2007. Charity at first 1964 - We played in our first FA Charity Shield, only drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield. Gordon Wallace and Gerry Byrne twice gave us the lead, with John Byrne and Geoff Hurst both netting equalisers, with the latter being one of his nine strikes against the reds. The trophy was shared between the two clubs, as this was in the days before extra-time and penalty shoot-outs. Phil Chisnall made his reds bow in this game when he became the first ever substitute in senior English football, replacing Alf Arrowsmith after just a quarter of an hour, who had suffered a serious knee injury. Red defenders on the way out 1991 - Gary Gillespie was sold to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000. He had been Joe Fagan’s first signing, helping us to three League titles in his eight injury-ravaged years at Anfield, scoring sixteen times in 214 appearances. 2002 - Young full-back Stephen Wright joined Sunderland for £3m, after just 21 reds games. He netted twice in 105 games for them, with injuries blighting his time there, and was released in May 2008. Double capture 2005 - Liverpool confirmed the signings of young centre-backs Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza and Miki Roqué from U.E. Lleida. Both featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup winning campaign in 2006, but only made one senior appearance between them, when Roque made a late cameo at Galatasaray in December 2006. 1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003. 1983 – Winger Brian Mooney signed from Home Farm for £20,000. He struck 52 times in 225 appearances for the Foxes, before joining Leeds United for £1m in July 1990. 2003 - Steve Staunton joined Coventry City on a free transfer from Aston Villa. He notched four times in 75 games for the Sky Blues before joining Walsall two years later. 2011 – Robbie Keane joined LA Galaxy from Tottenham Hotspur for £3.5m, so far bagging 97 goals in 145 outings for the American outfit and becoming their captain. Mixed fortunes for Mark 1963 - Mark Wright was born in Dorchester. He was Graeme Souness’ first signing as Manager, arriving from Derby County for £2.2m in July 1991, and notched nine times in 210 reds appearances, the most memorable coming when he lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992. 1998 - A sadder milestone for Mark, as his contract with the reds came to end and he was forced to retire from football due to injury. New boss 1895 – Director John McKenna was appointed as the club’s Secretary, taking charge of 36 games as we claimed the Second Division title. He then confined himself to board duties until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He was later Chairman of the Football League for two decades. Happy birthday Jameo 1970 – Keeper David James was born in Welwyn Garden City. He signed from Watford for £1m in July 1992, making 277 appearances before being sold to Aston Villa for £1.7m in June 1999, having helped us to claim the League Cup in 1995 and reach the FA Cup Final the following year. 1973 – Former reserves coach Antonio Gómez Pérez was born in Madrid.
