Luis off the mark 2011 - Luis Suárez netted on his reds debut as a substitute to round off a 2-0 victory over Stoke City at Anfield. Raul Meireles had opened the scoring immediately after the break. Hodgson’s seventeenth 1935 - Gordon Hodgson scored his seventeenth and final reds hat-trick in a 4-2 League win at Leeds United, with Alf Hanson also netting. This remains a club record. Arthur Hydes struck the last two of his four goals against the reds that day. 1929 - We also faced Leeds, drawing 2-2 at Elland Road, with Jimmy McDougall and Albert Whitehurst bagging our goals, while B

Thumping the blues 1955 - Perhaps our most memorable game on this day came when we triumphed 4-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Fourth Round, at a time when we were a division below the Blues, having been relegated the previous season. The goals came from Billy Liddell, Alan A’Court and a John Evans brace. Unfortunately, Huddersfield Town knocked us out at Anfield in the following round. 1944 - We also won there in a Wartime League fixture, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer on target as we beat Everton 3-2, with Don Welsh netting from the spot. 1947 - We lost a top-flight encount

Off the bench for the first time 1965 - Utility player Geoff Strong became our first ever League substitute, netting after coming on for full-back Chris Lawler in our 1-1 top-flight draw at home to West Ham United. Gerry Byrne made his 200th League appearance in this fixture while Geoff Hurst bagged on of his nine strikes against us. A win at Goodison 2001 - After Kevin Campbell put the home side ahead, the last of his four goals against the reds, we stormed back to beat Everton 3-1, thanks to a Steven Gerrard pile-driver, a Michael Owen penalty and a John Arne Riise strike that inspi

Title number five 1947 - We clinched our fifth League title when Stoke City lost 2-1 at Sheffield United. We therefore finished one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and two ahead of the Potters. The news came through on the day that we clinched the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Everton 2-1, thanks to goals from Jack Balmer and William Watkinson. The match was actually halted five minutes from time so that director George Richards could address the crowd by loudspeaker with the news. Digger arrives 1987 - John Barnes was signed from Watford for £900,000. His transfer had been heavily trailed for at least six months, and Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, eventually moving on to Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. Ton up for Stan 2002 - Ex-red Steve Staunton won his hundredth international cap, skippering the Republic of Ireland in their 1-1 World Cup Finals draw with Germany in Ibaraki, with future red Robbie Keane on target. Dietmar Hamann, future red Steve Finnan and ex-red Christian Ziege all also played. Meanwhile, Abel Xavier sat out Portugal’s shock 3-2 defeat by the USA in Suwon, for whom ex-red Brad Friedel was between the sticks. Steve Staunton has turned out for the Republic of Ireland twice more on this day in history. 1994 - He took part in their first meeting with the Czech Republ
