Births and deaths 1960 - David Hodgson was born in Gateshead. He joined the reds from Middlesbrough for £450,000 in August 1982 but never fully established himself in his two years at Anfield, scoring ten times in 49 appearances, although he did claim a League championship medal and helped us to clinch the FA Charity Shield on his reds bow before he left for Sunderland for £125,000. 1890 – Inside-right John Tosswill was born in Eastbourne. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913. 1876 - Forward Ronald ‘Wee’ Orr was born in Bartonholm, Ayrshire. He netted 39 times in 112 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £350 in April 1908. He returned to Scotland in January 1912, signing for Raith Rovers. 2006 – South African winger Harman van den Berg died. He signed from Peninsular in his homeland in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened. 2019 – Full-back Steve Parr died. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. Seven years later, he joined Exeter City, and ended his playing career with Rochdale. New manager 1936 – George Kay was appointed Manager, replacing George Patterson. He led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1946, and the FA Cup Final four years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in January 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. Mo yet again 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored in his sixth consecutive opening League game of the season, a Premier League first for any club, with substitute Darwin Núñez also on target as Aleksandar Mitrović struck twice, including one from the spot. In 2014 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo joined on a two-year loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, although he returned to his parent club in July 2015 after nineteen reds games. 2002 - Salif Diao signed from Sedan for £4.7m. He made 61 reds appearances, scoring three times, and moved to Stoke City in January 2007 after a successful loan spell there. 1982 - Reserves keeper Steve Ogrizovic joined Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Bob Wardle. Oggy had only made five first-team appearances for the reds, going on to play nearly a hundred times for the Shrews in his two years at Gay Meadow, before joining Coventry City. Wardle never made our first team and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1893 – Forward Jimmy Stott signed from Middlesbrough. He netted fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in June 1894. Out 1999 - Øyvind Leonhardsen left for Tottenham Hotspur for £3m, after seven goals in 49 reds games. He said, “Things have been going pretty well in Liverpool, so it will be a bit sad to leave this club”. He struck eleven times in 72 games for Spurs, before moving on again to Aston Villa in August 2002. 2007 - Reserves centre-back Miki Roqué joined Xerez Club Deportivo SAD on loan. However, he only turned out once for them in the League and spent the following season with Cartagena, being released by the reds in June 2009. He sadly died in June 2012 aged just 23. 2014 – Midfielder Conor Coady was sold to Huddersfield Town for £375,000. He had only made two senior appearances, netting three times in 48 games for the Terriers before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £2m in July 2015. 2015 - Spanish centre-half Rafael Páez signed for AD Alcorcón, having failed to break through at Anfield. 2016 – Centre-half Lloyd Jones signed a new two-year contract with the reds and joined Swindon Town on loan on the same day. He struck twice in 29 outings in his one season with the Robins, leaving the reds in January 2018 to sign for Luton Town. The start of a legend 1974 - Legendary reds boss Bob Paisley took charge of the reds for the first time, in a friendly against 1. FC Kaiserslautern at their Betzenbergstadion. Kevin Keegan was sent off in what the club claimed was a case of mistaken identity although we were still able to win 3-1, with Ray Kennedy, Peter Cormack and Phil Boersma on the scoresheet. We led 2-0 after thirty minutes before new signing Kennedy was scythed down by Dietmar Schwager, who was then pushed by Keegan. However, the club claimed that the referee had mistaken him for Peter Cormack, although Keegan admitted years later it had actually been him who had thrown a punch. Aldo bags a treble 1987 - John Aldridge netted a hat-trick, including a penalty, in our 4-1 friendly defeat of Norwegian side Vålerenga. Paul Walsh grabbed the other goal as we came from behind to win. 1986 - We were also in Scandinavia, drawing 1-1 with Danish side Kolding at the Mosevej Sportsplads, with Steve McMahon on target. Three Danish internationals, Allan Hansen, Allan Simonsen and Kent Nielsen, guested for the home side Belgian celebrations 1984 - We took part in a match to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of Belgian side Sporting de Charleroi. Unfortunately, we somewhat spoiled the party by thumping the home side 6-0, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, Michael Robinson, Gary Gillespie, John Wark, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan. Other friendlies 1978 - We trounced Basel 6-0 at their St. Jakob-Park, with Kenny Dalglish, Jimmy Case and Emlyn Hughes all netting to add to a Robert Baldinger own goal and a brace from Ray Kennedy. 1996 - We were held to a goalless draw by Millwall at The Den. 2011 – We beat Valencia 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. On the same day, Dani Pacheco featured as Spain thumped Australia 5-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with R.C.D. Espanyol’s Álvaro Vázquez scoring a hat-trick. 2016 - Sadio Mané scored his first reds goal as thumped Barcelona 4-0 in an International Champions Cup game at Wembley. We benefited from a Javier Mascherano own goal before Divock Origi and Marko Grujić completed the scoring. Not the Wright boss 2004 - Mark Wright resigned as Manager of Chester City. The Board of Directors issued a statement saying that, “Wright persistently flouted his managerial position with regard to the size and budget of the first-team squad. When he departed, Mr. Wright failed even to have the decency to enter the dressing room and address his players, choosing instead to simply drive away.” However, he subsequently had a third spell at the Deva Stadium. Personal honours 2000 - Reds defender Rigobert Song was named in a FIFA all-star squad to take on France in a charity match later in the month. The only other English-based player was Manchester City’s George Weah. 2001 - It was announced that Jerzy Dudek and Sami Hyypiä had both been nominated for UEFA awards, based on their performances in the previous season’s European competitions. A first cap 1997 - Stéphane Henchoz won his first cap as a Blackburn Rovers player, and 24th in total, as Switzerland lost 1-0 in a friendly in Slovakia. 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise nabbed a brace, his first goals for Norway Under-15’s as they thumped Finland 7-1 in a friendly in Øyer. On the move 2002 - Ex-red Paul Ince signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers, a month after being released by Middlesbrough. He played 131 times for the Molineux outfit but left in August 2006 after being overlooked for the Manager’s job. 2003 - Joe Cole joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6.6m, after thirteen strikes in 150 outings for the Irons. 2007 – Left-back José Enrique moved to Newcastle United from Villarreal for £6.3m, after 25 games for El Submarino Amarillo. 2015 – Future reds winger Mohamed Salah joined Roma on loan from Chelsea, netting fifteen times in 42 games before making the move permanent for a reported €15m a year later. On the same day, Academy keeper Jamie Stephens signed for Barnet, so far playing 65 senior games for the Bees. 2018 – Hungarian forward Krisztián Németh joined Sporting Kansas City from New England Revolution for $350,000 in allocation money and a first-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. 2019 – Winger Harry Wilson joined Bournemouth on loan, going on to score seven goals in 35 games as the Cherries were relegated. On the same day, forward Taiwo Awoniyi moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 for the season, netting once in twelve outings. Meanwhile, Canadian forward Liam Miller returned to Kilmarnock on loan, only scoring once in 22 games in his second campaign at Rugby Park. 2022 – Midfielder Leighton Clarkson joined Aberdeen on loan. He joined them permanently in June 2023 after six goals in 38 outings while there on a temporary basis. Young Nuri 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin became the youngest ever Bundesliga player, aged 16 years 334 days, starting Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund’s 2-2 draw at VfL Wolfsburg. He was also cautioned. Also in international action 1986 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden in their 2-1 defeat of Finland in Helsinki. 1994 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured as Denmark Under-17’s beat 2-1. 2010 – Adam Morgan appeared as England Under-17’s beat Iceland 2-1 in a Nordic Tournament game in Finland. 2011 – Dani Pacheco featured as Spain Under-20’s thrashed Australia 5-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia. 2021 – Future red Wataru Endō played as host nation Japan lost their Olympics third place play-off 3-1 to Mexico in Saitama. -
Happy birthday Mr Kennedy 1951 - Ray Kennedy was born in Seaton Delavel. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games. Robbie arrives 2008 - Robbie Keane signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m. He struck seven times in 28 reds outings before returning to north London for an initial £15m fee the following February. He grabbed fifteen goals in 52 games in his second spell with Spurs before moving on to LA Galaxy for £3.5m in August 2011, while also being loaned out to Celtic and West Ham United. On the same day, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf joined Sunderland from Bolton Wanderers for £2.5m, after a total of 24 goals in 136 games for the Trotters. Razor sheathed 1992 - Ray Houghton was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. He had netted 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to claim two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield. In comes Harvey 2019 – Winger Harvey Elliott signed from Fulham for a fee eventually set at an initial £1.2m, having become the youngest ever to play in both the Premier League and League Cup while with the Cottagers. He made his senior bow on the same day as we lost 3-0 to SSC Napoli at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. He netted six times in 66 senior appearances across his first four years with the reds, helping us to claim the League Cup and FA Community Shield. 2020 – Northern Irish youngster Conor Bradley signed for the reds as a professional. He has so far made five senior reds appearances, spending a successful 2022/23 season on loan at Bolton Wanderers. 1992 - England international Paul Stewart signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m. That same day he made his reds bow in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Rosenborg BK in Vålerenga. His time at Anfield was a failure, as he scored just three times in 42 appearances in nearly four seasons. He left for Sunderland on a free transfer in March 1996. 1972 – Midfielder Trevor Storton signed from Tranmere Rovers for £25,000, having struck eight times in 118 League games. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester in June 1974, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Shaq off the mark 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri scored in his first reds game as we thumped Manchester United 4-1 in an International Champions Cup game in Michigan, with Sadio Mané and Sheyi Ojo both scoring from the spot and Daniel Sturridge also on target. Four for Fagan 1945 - Willie Fagan scored four times, including two penalties, as we thumped an RAF XI 7-0 in Germany shortly after the end of hostilities. Legendary forward Billy Liddell bagged a brace, with Jack Balmer completing the scoring. Fernando the champion 2002 - Future red Fernando Torres bagged the only goal of the Final of the European Championships for Spain Under-19’s as they beat their German counterparts in Oslo. This was the third consecutive Under-19’s game in which he had scored. Reds firsts 2012 – Fabio Borini played his first reds game in a dour goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore on our North American tour. 2014 – Herbie Kane skippered England Under-17’s while making his debut at this level as they thumped Iceland 5-1 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also featuring. On the same day, future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-19’s in their goalless draw with Portugal in their European Championships Semi-final, with Portugal going through to the Final after a penalty shoot-out. New boys off the mark 1997 - New signing Øyvind Leonhardsen and young winger Mark Kennedy both scored their first reds goals in a 6-0 rout of Shelbourne in Dublin, each netting twice. Danny Murphy also struck his first reds goal, with Steve McManaman adding the other. Red Scots deaths 1967 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt died. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1960 – Scottish inside-right Jimmy Stewart died. He arrived from Motherwell in April 1909, bagging 26 goals in 63 outings before joining Hamilton Academical in January 1914. 1943 – Scottish outside-right Tom Wyllie died. He bagged fifteen goals in 25 senior games after signing from Everton in 1982, as well as scoring the only goal of the first ever derby meeting with his former club, in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final in 1893. He moved on to Bury later that year. Starting out 1996 - We were held to a goalless draw at Goodison Park in the third-place play-off of a friendly tournament also featuring Borussia Mönchengladbach and Porto, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sir John Moores CBE. Jamie Carragher made his first reds appearance, playing at right wing-back in place of the injured Jason McAteer. 2013 – Future reds midfielder Naby Keïta won his first senior cap as Guinea beat Mali 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. 2016 – Winger Harry Wilson signed a new contract. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance. He was sold to Fulham for a reported £12m in July 2021 after a successful loan spell. Scandinavian reds 1987 - Steve Nicol was on target as we drew 1-1 with Danish side Brønshøj at the Ringsted Stadion. Play was stopped briefly during the second half when a rabbit ran onto the pitch! 1991 - We were held to a goalless draw at Sirius in Sweden. Cleaned out by Ajax 2001 - We lost our closing fixture in the pre-season Amsterdam Tournament, going down 3-1 to Ajax. Jari Litmanen featured against his old side, while Robbie Fowler was on the scoresheet. Other pre-season games 1971 - Chris Lawler netted from long range as we beat Wrexham 1-0 in a testimonial game for Arfon Griffiths at the Racecourse Ground. 1993 - Ian Rush scored as we drew 1-1 at Birmingham City in the T.N.T. Inter-City Challenge Cup. We lost the resulting penalty shoot-out 4-3. 2007 - A Liverpool XI was held to a 1-1 friendly draw at Colchester United, with Miki Roqué volleying our goal. 2011 – We lost 3-0 at Galatasaray. 2013 – We beat the Thailand national side 3-0 in Bangkok, with Philippe Coutinho, Iago Aspas and Steven Gerrard on target. South coast moves 2009 - Peter Crouch joined Tottenham Hotspur from Portsmouth. He had struck sixteen times in 49 outings in this second spell with Pompey. 2006 - David Thompson moved to Fratton Park, having been released by Wigan Athletic at the end of the previous season. He featured just fifteen times for Pompey before moving to Bolton Wanderers the following January. Tosh for Charlie 1969 - Future red John Toshack played for Wales as they lost 1-0 to a Rest Of UK side at Ninian Park, in a game played to mark the investiture of the Prince of Wales, and raise funds for the Aberfan Disaster Fund. Youngsters in action 2009 – Conor Coady and future red Conor Thomas made their debuts for England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Denmark in the Nordic Tournament in Trondheim, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 2002 - Michael Foley-Sheridan appeared for the Republic of Ireland Under-19’s in the European Championship Finals third place play-off, which they lost 2-1 to Slovakia in Oslo. 1997 – Future red Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his seventeenth and last Under-19’s cap as Iceland drew 2-2 with Hungary in a European Championships group game. Ged in charge 1993 - Future reds boss Gérard Houllier led France to a 3-1 friendly win over Russia in Caen. Frank Sauzée, Eric Cantona and Jean-Pierre Papin netted for Les Bleus. Olympian ends 2008 – Lucas Leiva featured for a Brazil Olympic XI in their 3-0 defeat of a Singapore Select XI in the Stadium of Singapore, in what was the last match before the stadium was demolished later that year. 2021 – Alexis Mac Allister won his ninth and final cap for Argentina Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in the Olympics in Japan, while future red Wataru Endō appeared for the host nation as they beat France 4-0 in Yokohama. On the move again 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Everton from Ipswich Town for £80,000, although he never made the first team before moving on to Luton Town for £150,000 a year later. 2005 - Ex-reserves midfielder Neil Prince signed for Conference North outfit Stalybridge Celtic three years ago, after impressing on a trial. He left in May 2007 after seventeen strikes in 84 appearances. 2010 – Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Ipswich Town for £75,000 from Cardiff City. He had failed to find the net in 79 outings for the Bluebirds. 2011 – Midfielder Momo Sissoko joined Paris Saint-Germain from Juventus for an initial €7m, netting twice in 35 outings, before having his contract terminated in September 2013. 2015 - Spanish forward Dani Pacheco joined Deportivo Alavés on loan from Real Betis Balompié, netting three times in 38 outings as they claimed the Segunda División title. 2017 – Midfielder Adam Phillips signed for Norwich City, having his contract cancelled in February 2019 having failed to make a senior appearance. On the same day, right-back Connor Randall joined Heart Of Midlothian on loan, turning out 27 times for the Jam Tarts. 2022 – Midfielder Lee Peltier signed for Rotherham United, scoring once in 36 outings in his first campaign with the Millers. -
In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s beat Mexico 1-0 in the Quarter-final of the World Championships in Ottawa. Off goes Igor 2005 - Igor Bišcan signed for Panathinaikos after 118 reds games. The big Croat netted three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul. He had arrived from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m in December 2000. 1969 – Keeper John Ogston moved on to Doncaster Rovers, after a successful loan spell. He signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000 in September 1965 having played over 200 games for the Dons, but only appeared once for the reds. Lazar signs on 2014 - Serbian winger Lazar Marković signed from SL Benfica for £19.8m. He struck three times in 34 games before spending much of his time out on loan, moving on to Fulham for free in February 2019. Bellers off the mark 2006 - Paul Anderson and Craig Bellamy both scored in their first reds games as we won a friendly 2-0 at Wrexham. Also making their first senior appearances that day were Godwin Antwi, Danny Guthrie, Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs, Besian Idrizaj, David Martin, Danny O'Donnell, Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Miki Roqué, James Smith and Robbie Threlfall. Keeping bows 2022 – Custodians Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played their first reds games as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to secure the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both capitalised on reds errors to give the Gunners a half-time lead, which they held on to despite a second-half siege by the visitors. Bonne anniversaire 1981 - French midfielder Alou Diarra was born in Villepinte. After his free transfer from Bayern München in July 2002, he spent three seasons on loan in France, first at Le Havre AC, and then at Bastia and Racing Club de Lens, who he signed permanently for in June 2005. His only appearance in a red shirt came in a friendly win in Le Havre, when he enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem. Suso the champion 2012 – Suso featured as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Estonia. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a group stage game in Germany, with Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter also in action. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He bagged four goals in 71 outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2006, initially on loan. On the same day, ex-reds reserves defender Alex Watson left basement side Exeter City for nearby Southern League side Taunton Town after one goal in 51 outings since signing on free transfer from Torquay United two years earlier. 1997 - Ex-red Ray Houghton signed for Reading from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He struck just once in 56 appearances in his two seasons with the Royals before moving on to Stevenage Borough. 2016 – Ex-reds right-back Antonio Barragán joined Middlesbrough from Valencia, playing 27 times as they were relegated in his only campaign on Teesside, moving on to Real Betis Balompié in July 2017. 1993 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin joined Portsmouth from Oxford United for £200,000, four years after moving to the Manor Ground from Anfield. He bagged just 33 goals in his 207 appearances for Pompey before moving on to Carlisle United on a free transfer. 2006 - Former reserves defender Gareth Roberts signed for Doncaster Rovers from Tranmere Rovers. He has netted nineteen goals in 222 outings across his first six seasons, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. Robbie appears 1980 - Robbie Keane was born in Dublin. He signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m in July 2008, but only netted seven times in 28 games before making the return journey for an initial £15m fee the following January. 1971 - John Achterberg was born in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was appointed reserves goalkeeping coach at Melwood in June 2009 after over a decade as player and coach with Tranmere Rovers, moving up to the first team two years later. Reds in mourning 2001 - Tom Saunders died. The former Youth Development Officer and long-standing Director also spent many years as a European ‘spy’ for the club, checking out upcoming opponents. He also managed the England Schoolboys and Under-18’s during his career and was well loved at Anfield. 2013 – Centre-forward Dave Hickson died. He made the controversial switch across Stanley Park to join the reds for £12,000 in November 1959, putting an extra 15,000 on the gate for his debut, with one fan running on to kiss him on the cheek! He scored 38 times in his 67 reds games before joining Aston Villa in July 1961. Yet another win 2020 – We won 3-1 behind closed doors at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson putting us two up inside the opening eight minutes. Leandro Trossard pulled a goal back before the break, the first of his five goals past us to date, but Salah headed in a second to secure our thirtieth League win of the season, from just 34 games. Debuting over the water 2016 - Midfielder Ovie Ejaria, keeper Loris Karius, winger Sadio Mané, centre-back Joël Matip and forward Ben Woodburn all played their first reds games as Danny Ings notched the only goal of our friendly at Tranmere Rovers. Milanese arrival 2010 - Milan Jovanović signed on a free transfer from Standard de Liège. He failed to establish himself in the first team, notching just twice in eighteen outings before moving back to Belgium to sign for RSC Anderlecht in August 2011. Masch on target again 2007 - Javier Mascherano struck for Argentina, having scored his first senior international goal just three days earlier. He was part of a side that beat Peru 4-0 in Venezuela to reach the Copa América Semi-finals. On the same day, Harry Kewell reached a quarter of a century of caps for Australia in their 1-1 AFC Asian Cup draw with Oman in Bangkok. 2011 –Luis Suárez and future red Sebastián Coates both played for Uruguay as they drew 1-1 with Chile in a Copa América group game in Argentina. New signings 2016 – Reds boss Jürgen Klopp and Assistant Managers Peter Krawietz and Željko Buvač all signed new contracts. Buvač left the club in April 2018, with Klopp and Krawietz remaining at Anfield. 2005 - Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both signed new four-year contracts. He played 51 senior reds games, notching once, before being released in June 2018. 1996 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for the reds. He netted once in 21 reds appearances before moving to Sunderland for £3m in August 2002, for whom he turned out on 105 occasions. Double departure 2004 - Two of the coaching staff left the club. Sammy Lee took up a position as a full-time National Coach at the FA, with goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan also moving on, ending up at West Bromwich Albion. Ablett in charge 2009 - Gary Ablett was appointed Manager of Stockport County, having recently been sacked as our reserves boss. He left his role at Edgeley Park in June 2010 by mutual consent, following a takeover of the club, having led them to relegation from League One. Stan out of pocket 2002 - A Spanish court ruled that Stan Collymore was in breach of his contract when he had quit Real Oviedo to return to England, walking out just months into a four-year contract. He was ordered to pay the Spanish club £200,000 compensation. Nando the dad 2009 - Fernando Torres became a father to Nora when his wife Olalla gave birth at the Hospital La Rosaleda Compostelan in Santiago de Compostela. -
Happy birthday Luis 1978 - Luis García was born in Badalona in Spain. He settled into life in England quickly, and struck thirty times in 121 games, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, before returning to his homeland to re-join Club Atlético de Madrid for around £4m in July 2007. He had also helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. 1999 – New Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez was born in Artigas. He signed from SL Benfica for an initial £64.2m in June 2022, so far scoring fifteen times in 42 reds games, including as we clinched the FA Community Shield on his debut. 1899 - Left-winger George Pither was born in Kew, Surrey. He struck once in twelve senior appearances after signing from Merthyr Town for £500 in November 1926, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin. He moved to Crewe Alexandra in May 1928. 2004 – Left-back Luke Chambers was born in Preston. He signed pro terms in July 2021, having been with the Academy at the age of six, so far making it onto the first-team bench on two occasions. Bobby signs on 2015 – Forward Roberto Firmino agreed to sign from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for an initial £21m, with the deal being finalised the following month. Going for a Song 1994 - Future red Rigobert Song was dismissed as Cameroon lost 3-0 to Brazil in Palo Alto, becoming the youngest player ever to see red in the World Cup Finals. He was sent off again in the World Cup almost exactly four years later to complete an unwanted double. 2010 – Rigobert Song won his 137th and final cap for Cameroon as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in Cape Town, with Dirk Kuyt in opposition as the Dutch topped the group. Christian Poulsen played his last game for Denmark while with Juventus as they lost 3-1 to Japan in Rustenburg, alongside Daniel Agger, so failing to progress. Also in action was Martin Škrtel, as Slovakia beat Italy 3-2 in a thrilling encounter in Johannesburg to reach the second stage at the Italians’ expense. On the verge of the title 2020 – We thumped Crystal Palace 4-0 behind closed doors at Anfield as we edged closer to our nineteenth League title. Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1976 - Phil Thompson netted in our 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg, with Carlos Rexach equalising two minutes later. However, this was enough to take us to our second UEFA Cup Final, after John Toshack’s winner in the Camp Nou. This game set our record home European attendance of 55,104 while Brian Hall was playing his 224th and final reds game. 1966 - Bobby Lennox gave Celtic a first leg lead in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, which we overcame in the Anfield return to reach our first European Final. Forward Phil Chisnall was playing his ninth and last reds game. 1971 - Billy Bremner struck as Leeds United won 1-0 at Anfield in the Fairs Cup, with the last of his five goals against the reds. A goalless draw in the return at Elland Road saw the Yorkshiremen through, where they beat Juventus in the two-legged final. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We staged a dramatic come-back at a raucous Anfield to beat Jürgen Klopp’s former charges Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 4-3 on the night to reach the UEFA Europa League Semi-final 5-4 on aggregate. We fell two goals behind inside the opening ten minutes, while we still needed to score twice in the final twelve minutes after Divock Origi scored in his third consecutive reds game with Philippe Coutinho also on target as we trailed 3-2 on the night. Mamadou Sakho nodded in before his centre-back partner Dejan Lovren headed in an injury-time winner. Red centurions 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth League game for the reds as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed us in front after the break before Mohamed Salah scored a stunning strike in what was Jürgen Klopp's 200th game in charge. 1973 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 500th reds game as we beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan on target from the spot. 1959 – We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday as Redfern Froggatt struck the last of his six goals past us, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia reaching a century of League games for the reds. Four apiece 2009 – We eventually drew 4-4 at Chelsea in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final to crash out 7-5 on aggregate. This was our 300th European game, and tenth meeting with Chelsea in continental competition, a new club record. We took a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to an innovative free-kick from Fábio Aurélio, his final reds strike, and a Xabi Alonso spot-kick. Didier Drogba embarrassed Pepe Reina at his near post to pull one back after the break, one of his eleven goals against the reds, with a thumping Alex free-kick drawing the scores level on the night, before Frank Lampard netted. A deflected strike from Lucas and Dirk Kuyt header left us needing just one more goal to progress. Unfortunately, another of Lampard’s eight goals past us then ended the scoring. Also recently 2018 – We beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Mohamed Salah nodding in his thirtieth League goal of the season, and fortieth in all competitions, before Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at the City Of Manchester Stadium by Manchester City. City’s Joey Barton pointedly ran to the away fans’ section and placed flowers in front of a giant ‘Justice for the 96’ banner before the game, which was played just a day before the anniversary of the disaster. 1995 - We lost 2-1 at Maine Road in another Premiership meeting, with future City player Steve McManaman netting our consolation. Biting the hand that fed 1984 - Ex-reds reserves striker Colin Russell netted one of Stoke City’s goals in their surprise 2-0 win at the Victoria Ground, with Ian Painter also on target. Graeme Souness was booked, taking him to a suspension for gathering twenty disciplinary points. International goalscorers 1951 - Billy Liddell struck as Scotland lost 3-2 to England at Wembley in the British International Championships. 2022 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as the Republic of Ireland beat North Macedonia 3-2 in a friendly, while winning his seventh and last Under-16’s cap. Tom the skipper 1934 - Future reds defender Tom Cooper captained England for the first time as they beat Scotland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1945 - Another red skippered his country, when Matt Busby represented Scotland as they were thumped 6-1 by England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. Clubmate Jim Harley also played for the Scots. Red arrivals 1909 – Half-back John McConnell signed from Airdrieonians for £80. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War, including one in goal in only his second game! 1897 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews was born in Plas Bennion. He netted eight times in thirteen Wartime games, signing from Colwyn Bay in 1918. He scored four times in nine outings before joining Bristol City in March 1922. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We twice entertained Manchester United in the League on this day in the space of three years. 1979 - We won 2-0 with Kenny Dalglish heading a goal and Phil Neal also on the scoresheet in what the Echo described as “a majestic exhibition of quality football to outplay their FA Cup conquerors” of ten days earlier. 1981 – We lost 1-0, thanks to a goal from Gordon McQueen. Hunt missing 1964 - Roger Hunt missed our trip to Burnley after playing in all of our previous 120 games. Alf Arrowsmith bagged a brace with Ian St. John also scoring in our 3-0 victory. Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko made his comeback from his eye injury at SL Benfica a month earlier, while attempting to wear a set of protective goggles! New boss 1951 – Don Welsh took over as the club’s Manager. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and was in charge at Anfield for 232 games. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. European victories 1984 - A superb reds victory came as we won 4-1 at SL Benfica, then led by Sven-Göran Eriksson, in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie. Ronnie Whelan bagged a brace, as Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also got on the scoresheet, with Kenny Dalglish running the show. Nené scored the first of his three goals for the Portuguese outfit against us. 1973 - Kevin Keegan netted the only goal of the game at Dynamo Dresden in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg, en route to claiming the trophy for the first of three times so far. Keegan had two first-half strikes chalked off before finally notching. Shaun Derry and ex-red Djibril Cissé both headed in before Jamie Mackie scored a last-gasp winner. Beaten down the East Lancs 2010 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United as Fernando Torres headed us in front before Wayne Rooney converted the rebound of a penalty saved by Pepe Reina, one of his seven goals past us. Ji-Sung Park struck the winner after an hour with Torres and Yossi Benayoun both wasting good chances to draw us level. Signing on 1995 - Mark Kennedy signed from Millwall for £1.5m. He only ever made 21 senior reds appearances, without getting on the scoresheet. He was sold to Wimbledon for £1.75m after three years at Anfield. 1940 – Wing-half Stan Palk signed as a professional. He joined from his hometown club in the summer of 2016 and has struck once in 29 solid senior appearances by the time of his 27th birthday. 1929 – Scottish centre-forward Sam Shields was born in Denny, Stirlings. He signed from Cowdenbeath in May 1949, only playing once before joining Airdrieonians in July 1951. 1918 – Winger Harman van den Berg was born in Cape Town. He signed from South African side Peninsular in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened. 1886 - John Bovill was born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire. He signed from Chesterfield Town in April 1911 and went on to bag seven goals in 29 reds games before leaving for Linfield in 1914. 1924 – Scottish forward ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr died. He netted 39 times in 112 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £350 in April 1908. He returned to Scotland in January 1912, signing for Raith Rovers. 2009 – Club Secretary Bryce Morrison died. He had worked for the reds for seventeen years. Shown the door 1983 - Emlyn Hughes was sacked as Manager of Rotherham United as they headed towards the old Third Division. He had been in charge since July 1981. 2010 - Steve Staunton was dismissed as Darlington boss, having led them to just four victories in 25 games in charge, although they still went on to finish rock bottom of League Two. The closest we came was when David N’Gog rattled the crossbar. 1925 – Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers struck in the ninetieth minute as we held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw in a top-flight meeting at Ewood Park. Ted Harper bagged one of his five goals against the reds. Arnell off the mark fast 1953 - Forward Alan Arnell scored on his reds debut as we beat Blackpool 5-2 at Anfield. Miki’s bow in Istanbul 2006 - Young Spanish centre-half Miki Roqué made his only reds appearance as a substitute for Xabi Alonso for the final six minutes of our 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray, so becoming the player with the shortest first-class career in our history. This was the final game of our Champions League group, in which we had already secured top spot. Robbie Fowler bagged both our goals, his only reds strikes in the Champions League proper. Young debutants 1990 - Steve McManaman became the first player to play for the England Under-21’s without any first-team experience, as he featured in their goalless friendly draw with Wales at Prenton Park. Meanwhile, Darren Potter was sent off as the Republic of Ireland, also featuring Michael Foley-Sheridan, beat Mexico 2-0. Elisha for the Irish 1931 - Reds keeper Elisha Scott won his sixteenth cap for Northern Ireland, following five for the combined Ireland, as they thumped Wales 4-0 in the British International Championships in Belfast. Double debutants 1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Ronnie Whelan played his 200th League game for the reds that day. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting eighteen times in 146 appearances before being released earlier this summer. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and helping us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Clem departs 1981 – Ray Clemence was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He had arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields in his fourteen years at Anfield. Also moving on 1974 - Centre-half Larry Lloyd was sold to Coventry City for £240,000. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. 1976 – Kevin Keegan confirmed that the upcoming season would be his final one at Anfield. He struck twenty times in 57 outings in this campaign, helping us to claim the European Cup and League title, and reach the FA Cup Final. 1991 – David Speedie left the reds to join Blackburn Rovers. He had struck six times in fourteen outings since signing from Coventry City for £675,000 seven months earlier. Dismissals galore 2010 – Joe Cole was sent off for a challenge on Laurent Koscielny just before half-time in our Anfield meeting with Arsenal. David N’Gog put us in front immediately after the break, with the lead lasting until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Pepe Reina spilled the rebound into his own net. Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. This turned out to be Javier Mascherano’s 139th and final reds game. 2022 - Darwin Núñez was dismissed in our 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. Wilfred Zaha put the Eagles in front before the break, but the Uruguayan was sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen. Luis Díaz bagged the equaliser, Other birthdays 1988 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was born in Beni-Boughafar. He signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015. 1905 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid was born in Motherwell. He signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926 and bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929. Off the mark 2017 – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first senior goal as we won 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League qualifier. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty, with forward Dominic Solanke making his reds bow as we benefited when Havard Nordtveit inadvertently diverted a James Milner cross into his own net. 2007 - Yossi Benayoun made his reds debut as Andriy Voronin’s first reds strike proved to be the only goal of the first leg of our Champions League qualifier in Toulouse, who became our hundredth different opponents in European competition. Happy birthday Boudewijn 1976 - Bolo Zenden was born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He signed on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury hampered his career at Anfield. He helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as reach the Champions League Final in his brief time with the reds. Bolo left the club in July 2007 to join Olympique de Marseille. 2021 – Former Director Terry Smith died at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead. He was on the board from 1992 until 2007. Charity at first 1964 - We played in our first FA Charity Shield, only drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield. Gordon Wallace and Gerry Byrne twice gave us the lead, with John Byrne and Geoff Hurst both netting equalisers, with the latter being one of his nine strikes against the reds. The trophy was shared between the two clubs, as this was in the days before extra-time and penalty shoot-outs. Phil Chisnall made his reds bow in this game when he became the first ever substitute in senior English football, replacing Alf Arrowsmith after just a quarter of an hour, who had suffered a serious knee injury. Red defenders on the way out 1991 - Gary Gillespie was sold to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000. He had been Joe Fagan’s first signing, helping us to three League titles in his eight injury-ravaged years at Anfield, scoring sixteen times in 214 appearances. 2002 - Young full-back Stephen Wright joined Sunderland for £3m, after just 21 reds games. He netted twice in 105 games for them, with injuries blighting his time there, and was released in May 2008. Double capture 2005 - Liverpool confirmed the signings of young centre-backs Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza and Miki Roqué from U.E. Lleida. Both featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup winning campaign in 2006, but only made one senior appearance between them, when Roque made a late cameo at Galatasaray in December 2006. 1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003. 1983 – Winger Brian Mooney signed from Home Farm for £20,000. This ensured that we became the fourth team to pass a thousand points in the Premier League, reaching 1,002, and was the first ever live Premiership match shown on Setanta Sports. We had taken the lead through a Martin Laursen own goal before Jamie Carragher gave away a penalty that Gareth Barry converted, one of his four goals past us. Keepers on the move 1994 - Bruce Grobbelaar left Anfield for Southampton on a free transfer. He had played 628 reds games and won six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in his thirteen years at Anfield. He turned out forty times in his two seasons at The Dell, before moving on to Plymouth Argyle. 2005 - Former reds reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Fulham on loan from Cardiff City, before signing permanently the following January. He made a total of 26 senior appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Hull City in July 2008. 2006 - David James joined Portsmouth from Manchester City for a £1.2m fee, after exactly a century of appearances for the Blues. He turned out 158 times for Pompey before moving to Bristol City in July 2010, helping them to claim the FA Cup in 2008. On the same day, Paul Harrison signed for Southport. He made nineteen outings in the Conference as they were relegated. Charity and Community with the Gunners We have twice met Arsenal in the traditional curtain-raiser to the season. 1979 - We put on a sparkling show to beat the Gunners 3-1 at Wembley to claim the FA Charity Shield outright for the fourth time. Happy birthdays 1995 – Centre-half Ben Davies was born in Barrow-in-Furness. He signed from Preston North End for £500,000 in February 2021 but did not manage a senior appearance before being sold to Rangers for a reported initial £3m in July 2022. 1913 - Andy Beattie was born in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. 1899 - Bert Shelley was born in Romsey. He played 448 times for Southampton, a club record until the 1960’s. After retiring from playing, he joined George Kay’s coaching staff, following him to Anfield in August 1936. He stayed on as Trainer after Kay’s departure, working under Don Welsh and Phil Taylor until 1959 when he joined the general staff, with his duties including looking after the treatment room. He was still working for the club when he died in December 1971. 1886 – Inside-left Bert Goode was born in Chester. He struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club in May 1908, moving on to Wrexham in June 1910. Reds in Europe 1960 - We beat French side Nantes Atlantique 2-0 in the first leg of the Friendship Cup, with Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis on the scoresheet. 1978 - Our first win in Austria came when Steve Heighway netted the only goal of our friendly encounter with Austria Wien. 1981 - Terry McDermott struck as we lost 2-1 at Servette FC Genève in Switzerland, with Jimmy Case playing his final game for the club before joining Brighton & Hove Albion. Harper heads south 1994 - Former reserves defender Alan Harper joined Burnley on a free transfer from Luton Town. He played 42 times in his two seasons at Turf Moor, as they were relegated into the Second Division. Also moving on 1970 – Geoff Strong was sold to Coventry City for £29,500. He made 201 reds appearances after moving from Arsenal in November 1964 for a club record £40,000, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. 2006 - Jon Newby signed for Wrexham. He failed to net in thirteen outings and moved on to Southport in January 2007. 2009 – Reserves forward Craig Lindfield was released. He struck in a pre-season friendly at Crewe Alexandra in July 2006 on his first appearance for the senior side but failed to make a first-class appearance for the reds. 2015 – Future red Xherdan Shaqiri joined Stoke City for a then club record £12m from Internazionale, grabbing fifteen goals in 92 games for the Potters. He moved on to Anfield for £13m in July 2018. Time for the Rafalution 2004 - Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager. His first season in charge saw him lead us to glorious victory in the Champions League Final in Istanbul, to claim the European Cup for the fifth time in our history. He then added the UEFA Super Cup and FA Cup to the Anfield trophy collection to become the first reds boss to claim major trophies in his first two seasons in charge. He went on to claim the FA Community Shield and take us to a second European Cup Final in three seasons, as well as our best-ever points tally in a Premiership season before a disappointing last campaign led to his departure in June 2010. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag 1967 - Jürgen Klopp was born in Stuttgart, West Germany. He took over as reds boss in October 2015, leading us to three unsuccessful cup finals before finally landing the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and our first League title in thirty years in quick succession, following these up with an FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. Diouf departs 2005 - El-Hadji Diouf was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m, having spent the previous season on loan with the Trotters. He grabbed 24 goals in 136 games for Wanderers, having only netted six times in eighty reds games following his £10m capture from Racing Club de Lens in June 2002. On the same day, future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos played for Greece as they lost 3-0 to Brazil in the Confederations Cup in Leipzig. Also in international action 1999 – Future red Igor Bišcan played for Croatia as they beat Mexico 2-1 in a Korea Cup game in Seoul. 2021 – Xherdan Shaqiri played for Switzerland as they lost 3-0 to Italy in a European Championship Finals group game in Rome. Meanwhile, Neco Williams, Harry Wilson and ex-red Joe Allen and Danny Ward all played as Wales beat Turkey 2-0 in Azerbaijan. -
