Another Rushie treble
1984 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick past the young Nigel Spink on a frozen Villa Park pitch, as we came from behind to win 3-1 in a live Friday night BBC game, in front of 19,566 hardy fans. Scouser Dennis Mortimer struck the Villains’ consolation.
1934 - We also visited Villa Park, when right-back Bob Done bagged his thirteenth and final reds goal with Syd Roberts also on target as we lost 3-2. Tom Waring struck two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Dix nabbing the first of his four past us.

Birth and death
1994 - Former reds right-half Sir Matt Busby died. He, of course, went on to far greater fame down the East Lancs Road, but in his time at Anfield he captained the reds, and struck three times in 122 first-team appearances before the Second World War, as well as another goal in 26 wartime outings.
1869 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was born in Renton. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps.

Champions defeated
2007 - We beat Chelsea convincingly, 2-0, thanks to an early Dirk Kuyt strike and Jermaine Pennant’s first reds goal. This secured Rafael Benítez’s 56th win in his hundredth League game in charge, so equalling Bill Shankly’s record. This was also Jose Mourinho’s hundredth League match as Chelsea boss. Later that day, celebrated reds fan Dr. Fun, whose real name was Lenny Campbell, sadly died in hospital aged 63, following a bout of cancer.
2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by the Blues in the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final at Anfield. Eden Hazard opened the scoring from the spot, one of his seven goals past us to date, with Raheem Sterling netting a second-half equaliser.

A great start from Sam
1900 - Sam Raybould scored after thirty seconds, but we were eventually beaten 3-1 in the Goodison derby, as the Blues completed a League double. This was his first reds goal, while Jimmy Settle netted two of his eleven goals against the reds as Joe Blythe also scored.

Red centurions
2010 – Lucas Leiva played his hundredth reds game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, with a fans’ guard of honour greeting the team coach on its way into Anfield. Dirk Kuyt scored a twice-taken penalty in the final minute, having opened the scoring early on.
1962 – Roger Hunt reached a century of games for the club in our 1-1 Second Division draw at Sc***horpe United, when Ian St. John netted our goal.

Youngest in the cup
2016 - Sheyi Ojo became our youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer in our 3-0 Third Round replay win at Exeter City, aged 18 years and 215 days, with both he and midfielder João Teixeira bagging their only reds goals. Left-back José Enrique skippered the side for the only time while playing centre-half, with Joe Allen having opened the scoring.

Two-ton Andy
2022 – Andy Robertson played his 200th game for the reds as we won the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final 2-0 at Arsenal to reach the Final thanks to a Diogo Jota brace. Right-back Neco Williams featured for the 33rd and last time, with Thomas Partey sent off for the home side in the final minute.

Marching on together
1996 - Gary Kelly was sent off for Leeds United for bringing down Rob Jones in the area with the score 1-0 at Anfield. Robbie Fowler converted the resulting spot-kick, the first penalty we had been awarded in 41 matches. We eventually romped home 5-0, our equal record victory over the Whites. Robbie Fowler scored a second with Neil Ruddock also bagging a brace and Stan Collymore also on target.

Failure at last
1973 - John Toshack struck as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County at Anfield, after Roger Davies had bagged the first of his five goals against the reds. This ended a run of 21 consecutive home League wins, still a top-flight record. This was Tosh’s final goal of the season in all competitions, although he still finished as our joint top scorer in the League with thirteen strikes. Steve Heighway played his hundredth League game for the reds.

More derby despair
We have lost both the Anfield derbies played on this day in history.
1912 - Sam Gilligan struck as we went down 3-1. Tommy Browell scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Frank Jefferies and George Beare also on target.
1951 - We were beaten 2-0 as Jimmy McIntosh bagged his only two derby goals, although he had previously scored for times past us with Blackpool. Forward Don Woan played his second and final reds game.

Michael on target
1998 - Michael Owen struck the only goal of the game as we beat Newcastle United at Anfield in game that was postponed from the previous August, following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Signing on
1909 – Full-back Bob Crawford signed from Arthurlie. He played 115 times for the reds, netting once in a career badly interrupted by injury.
1926 – Outside-right Dick Edmed signed from Gillingham for £1,800. He scored 46 times in 170 reds games before joining Bolton Wanderers in May 1932. He died on his eightieth birthday.

2006 - John Arne Riise signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2009. He made 348 first-team appearances in total, notching 31 times. In his time with the club, he helped us to claim the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields before moving to Roma for £4m in June 2008.

A new breeding ground
1999 - The new Academy was officially opened in Kirkby, seven miles from Anfield. On the same day, future red Nicolas Anelka played for France as they beat Morocco 1-0 in a friendly in Marseille.

Stevie honoured
2013 - Steven Gerrard was presented with the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Award at the Savoy Hotel in London. He followed Bob Paisley in 1984 and Kenny Dalglish in 1987 as the club’s only winners of this trophy.

Raw Venison
1982 - Barry Venison signed as a professional for Sunderland. He played more than two hundred games for the Wearsiders, including the 1985 Milk Cup Final, before moving to Anfield for £200,000 in July 1986.

All wrong for Wright
1990 – Crystal Palace’s Ian Wright broke his leg as we won 2-0 at Selhurst Park. Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley both netted as we completed a League double over the Eagles after our 9-0 triumph the previous September.

In African action
2022 – Ex-reds loanee Steven Caulker played for Sierra Leone as they lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cameroon.
2015 – Kolo Touré played as Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with future red Naby Keïta’s Guinea in group game in Equatorial Guinea. Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s as they thumped the Czech Republic 6-0 in a tournament game.
2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured in another group game as Mali beat Niger 1-0 in South Africa.
2002 – Ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 defeat of DR Congo in Mali. On the same day, future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both played in Senegal’s 1-0 defeat of Egypt in another group game.
2001 – Future red Touré appeared in a qualifier as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 2-0 in Bouaké.

Other reds games
2001 – Middlesbrough held us to a goalless draw at Anfield.
1968 – Geoff Strong and Ron Yeats both scored with their head as we beat Southampton 2-0 in L4.
1923 – We beat Boro 2-0 at Ayresome Park, with Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson on the scoresheet.
1906 – We defeated Sunderland 2-0 in a First Division match at Anfield, thanks to goals from Joe Hewitt and John Carlin, in a game that also acted as a benefit game for right-half Maurice Parry.

2017 – Forward Michael Ngoo joined Oldham Athletic from Bromley on a free transfer.
2014 – Young Portuguese centre-half Tiago Ilori joined Granada in Spain on loan, playing nine games there.
2005 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined Rangers from Panathinaikos for £1.75m. He struck five times in 57 outings while in Scotland, helping them to claim the League title and League Cup, bagging a brace in their Final defeat of Motherwell later that year. He was released in May 2006.
2011 – Ex-reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Barnsley for £500,000. He scored once in 27 games before moving to Huddersfield Town in June 2013 after a successful loan spell there.

1995 - Steve Nicol joined Notts County as a Player/Coach on a free transfer. He made 37 appearances for the Magpies before moving on to Sheffield Wednesday after County were relegated.
1998 - Ex-reserves defender Barry Jones joined York City from Wrexham for £40,000. He made 134 League appearances before joining Southport in 2001.

2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-15’s in their 3-1 defeat by Japan.
2009 – Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay in the Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" as they drew 1-1 with Brazil in Venezuela.
2017 – Midfielder Allan played in the South American Championships for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 0-0 with Chile in Ecuador.
2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez featured as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Ecuador 3-1 in the South American Championships in Chile.
