The arrival of the king 1977 - Kenny Dalglish signed from Celtic for a club record £440,000 to fill the gap left by the recently-departed Kevin Keegan. King Kenny struck 172 times in his 515 games, winning countless honours as both player and manager. 1995 - We met Celtic in a friendly, sharing a goalless draw at Celtic Park. 2013 – We lost a pre-season meeting with the Hoops at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, with the stadium sold out for a football match for the first time since opening in May 2010. Amido Baldé scored the only goal of the game. Wembley disgrace 1974 - Phil Boersma netted as we drew 1-1 with Leeds United in the first FA Charity Shield to be played at Wembley, as Bill Shankly led the reds out for the last time. We went on to claim the trophy, winning a penalty shoot-out 6-5 thanks to Ian Callaghan’s decisive kick after each side had converted five successfully, with Brian Clough having nominated keeper David Harvey to take Leeds’ sixth kick. However, the day was marred by the dismissals, and shirt-tossing, of Kevin Keegan and Leeds United’s Billy Bremner, the first ever British players to be sent off at Wembley. Both players were eventually banned for eleven games and fined £500 apiece. Latest arrival 2020 – Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas signed from Olympiacos for an initial £11.75m as competition for Andy Robertson. He made 61 senior appearances across his first three campaigns with the reds, converting the winning spot-kick as we won the FA Cup in May 2022. Welsh moves 2012 - Joe Allen signed from Swansea City for a reported £15m, a Welsh record sale. He netted seven times in 132 outings before moving on to Stoke City for £13m in July 2016. On the same day, Craig Bellamy re-joined Cardiff City on a free transfer after nine strikes in 37 games in his second spell in L4, helping us to claim the League Cup and reach the FA Cup Final. 2011 – Craig Bellamy won his last cap as a Manchester City player as Wales lost 2-1 to Australia in Cardiff, with future red Joe Allen also in action. Spud departs 2004 - Danny Murphy left Anfield to join Charlton Athletic for £2.5m after netting 44 goals in 249 reds games, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He is probably best remembered for three times scoring the winner for us at Old Trafford. He made 64 appearances for the Addicks, notching ten times, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £2m in January 2006. Austrian joy 2004 - We travelled to the Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadion to face Austrian champions Grazer AK in the first leg of our third qualifying round for the Champions League. Michael Owen remained on the bench as his transfer to Real Madrid loomed, while Djibril Cissé, Josemi, Darren Potter and Stephen Warnock all made their senior debuts, in Rafael Benítez’s first competitive game. This was our hundredth game in the European Cup, with Steven Gerrard bagging both goals in our 2-0 victory, also having a third cruelly chalked off for offside. Reds off the mark 1983 - Michael Robinson scored in his first reds game as we beat WAC Morocco 3-1 in a testimonial match for Moroccan legend Labri Abadane. Steve Nicol and Graeme Souness netted our others. 1985 - Kevin MacDonald scored his first reds goal in a 3-3 friendly draw at Bristol City. Ronnie Whelan was also on target, with our first score coming from a Rob Newman own goal. 2014 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren scored in his first reds game as we thumped Jürgen Klopp’s Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 4-0 at Anfield, with right-back Javier Manquillo also featuring for the first time. The other goals came from Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson. Antonio - first and last 2005 - Young Spanish right-back Antonio Barragán made his only senior reds appearance as we won 3-1 at CSKA Sofia in the first leg of our Champions League Third Qualifying Round tie. Steven Gerrard set up all three of our goals, with Fernando Morientes bagging a brace to add to a Djibril Cissé strike. Rushie treble 1990 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick as we beat Swedish side Landskrona BoIS 6-3 in a pre-season friendly. Ray Houghton weighed in with a brace, with Ronnie Rosenthal completing the reds scoring. Other recent transfer moves 2009 – Reserves winger Adam Hammill was sold to Barnsley, having been on loan at Oakwell earlier that year. He notched thirteen times in 84 outings for the Tykes before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2011. On the same day, Rickie Lambert joined Southampton from Bristol Rovers for £1m after 59 strikes in 155 games. 2007 - We completed the signing of Argentine winger Sebastián Leto from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m. However, work permit problems restricted him to just four senior appearances, and he was sold to Panathinaikos in Greece in July 2009. On the same day, keeper Scott Carson joined Aston Villa on loan, while reserves centre-half James Smith moved temporarily to Stockport County. Carson turned out 36 times for the Villains before moving permanently to West Bromwich Albion in July 2008, while Smith played twelve times before signing a longer-term deal in December 2007. 2012 - Alou Diarra joined West Ham United from Olympique de Marseille for £2m after two goals in 42 outings in his one season in the south of France. 2017 – Hungarian forward Krisztián Németh signed for New England Revolution, who acquired him via a trade with Columbus Crew. Happy birthday Rafa 1994 – Spanish centre-half Rafael Páez was born in Orihuela. He joined the reds from Real Madrid in September 2013. He played fifteen times for the Under-21’s in his first season, spending the next campaign on loan at Bologna in Italy and S.D. Eibar in Spain before moving permanently to AD Alcorcón in August 2015. Friendly international goalscorers 2011 - Alberto Aquilani bagged his only senior international goal as a reds player as he won his final cap while on our books, with ex-red Xabi Alonso converting a penalty as Italy beat Spain 2-1 in Bari, with future red Thiago Alcântara making his bow from the bench. John Arne Riise scored while playing his first game for Norway since joining Fulham in their 3-0 defeat of the Czech Republic in Oslo. Mohamed Salah won his eleventh and last cap for Egypt Under-20’s as they lost 2-1 to Argentina in their World Championship Finals Round of 16 tie in Colombia, scoring from the spot. Future red Fabio Borini netted for Italy Under-21’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Switzerland in Varese. Charlie Adam won his first cap as a reds player, with Christian Poulsen playing his last international as a red, as Scotland beat Denmark 2-1 at Hampden Park. Raul Meireles made his last appearance for Portugal before leaving the reds, while Yossi Benayoun won his final cap before joining Arsenal on loan from Chelsea and Robbie Keane won his last cap as a Tottenham Hotspur player. Craig Bellamy featured for Wales for the last time before returning to Anfield from Manchester City, with Milan Jovanović winning his first cap as a Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht player. Also in international action that day were Daniel Agger, Péter Gulácsi, Michael Ngoo, Dani Pacheco, Danny Wilson, future reds Joe Allen, Oussama Assaidi, Mario Balotelli, Ádám Bogdán, Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren, Simon Mignolet and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa, Milan Baroš, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin, with John Toshack taking charge of FYR Macedonia. It starts with City 1968 - We kicked off the new season by defeating Manchester City 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Bobby Graham and Peter Thompson. Neil Young bagged one of his four goals against the reds. Olympian reds 2008 – Ryan Babel was on target as the Netherlands drew 2-2 with the USA in an Olympics Finals group game in China. Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina beat Australia 1-0, while Lucas Leiva appeared in Brazil’s 5-0 trouncing of New Zealand. 2016 – Tiago Ilori played in Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Algeria in Brazil, with Takumi Minamino in action for Japan as they beat Sweden 1-0 as fellow future red Wataru Endō captained the side. Shepherd flocks 1949 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd left Anfield to sign for New Brighton. He was on our books at the same time as his brothers Joseph and right-back Bill. Arthur struck twelve times in eleven wartime games, but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. In comes Cyril 1921 - Winger Cyril Gilhespy signed from Sunderland. He scored three times in nineteen outings before moving to Bristol City in 1925. Shoot-out defeat 2000 - The reds lost a penalty shoot-out 4-2, following a 1-1 draw at Norwegian side Vålerenga in a pre-season friendly, with Vladimír Šmicer on the scoresheet. Dietmar Hamann and Titi Camara both missed their kicks, while Gary McAllister and Nick Barmby were successful. Swiss reds 1982 - We played out a goalless draw with Servette FC Genève at Les Charmilles. 1984 - John Wark bagged the only goal of the game to claim the Phillips Trophy against Grasshopper-Club Zürich at the w***dorf Stadion in Bern. Other friendlies 1994 - Robbie Fowler netted a brace with Steve McManaman also scoring as we won 3-1 at Wrexham. 1976 - Less happily, we lost 2-0 at Dutch side Twente. Off the mark 2010 – Martin Kelly netted on his debut for England Under-21’s, with future reds Jordan Henderson winning his first and Victor Moses his only cap at this level in a 2-0 friendly defeat of Uzbekistan at Ashton Gate, and future red Daniel Sturridge also in action. Mario Balotelli made his senior international bow, winning his only cap as an Internazionale player as Italy lost 1-0 to the Ivory Coast at Upton Park, with future red Kolo Touré on target. Meanwhile, Lucas featured in Brazil’s 2-0 senior friendly victory over the USA in New Jersey. Ex-reds on the move 1990 - Phil Babb joined Bradford City from Millwall on a free transfer. He went on to make 93 appearances for the Bantams, scoring fourteen times, before moving on to Coventry City for £500,000 in July 1992. 1997 - Ronnie Rosenthal joined Watford on a free transfer from Tottenham Hotspur. He bagged eleven goals in 39 games for the Hornets. Also in international action 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-15’s as they lost 3-1 to England in Lillehammer. -
Nando off the mark 2007 - New record signing Fernando Torres struck his first reds goal in our 2-0 defeat of Shanghai Shenhua SVA SMEG in the Port of Rotterdam Tournament. Argentine winger Sebastián Leto played his first reds game in this game in De Kuip. Steven Gerrard was also on target, while the draw for the Champions League qualifiers on the same day paired us with French side Toulouse. Heading off 2000 - David Thompson was sold to Coventry City for £3m, after five goals in 56 reds games. He stayed at Highfield Road for two years before joining Blackburn Rovers for just £1.5m, netting sixteen times in 72 outings for the Sky Blues. 1967 – Forward Phil Chisnall moved on to Southend United. He had signed from his hometown club Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances. Arrivederci Alberto 2012 – Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani joined Fiorentina on a free transfer. He had signed from Roma for an initial fee of €20m in August 2009. He struck twice in 28 reds games, having struggled with injuries and illness in his first campaign at Anfield, spending the next two seasons on loan at Juventus and then AC Milan. For Stevie 2013 – A testimonial for Steven Gerrard was held at Anfield, with Olympiacos losing 2-0, thanks to goals from Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson. Djimi’s first game 1999 - Djimi Traoré made his reds bow in our 2-1 friendly defeat at Manchester City after signing from Laval for £550,000 the previous February. David Thompson scored our goal. Djimi made 141 reds appearances, netting just once, before joining Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006. Two off in Amsterdam 2003 - Neil Mellor and Steven Gerrard were both sent off in a bad-tempered The Sony Amsterdam Tournament 2003 game at the Amsterdam ArenA. Emile Heskey netted as we lost 2-1 to Galatasaray. To Hamburg We twice met Hamburger SV in pre-season action on this day in the 1970’s, at either end of Kevin Keegan’s Anfield career. 1971 - The two sides shared eight goals at Sportplatz am Rothenbaum, with Bobby Graham, Chris Lawler, Larry Lloyd and Ian Callaghan on target for the reds. 1977 - We lost 3-2 in a Harbour Cup match arranged as part of Keegan’s transfer to the German outfit. He scored for his new side, with David’s Johnson and Fairclough on target for the reds. 1979 - We were back in Germany, with Phil Thompson and David Johnson scoring as we drew 2-2 with Feyenoord in a friendly tournament in Gelsenkirchen, staged to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Schalke 04. The game went to extra time, before the reds prevailed 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out with Phil Neal, Terry McDermott, Graeme Souness and Alan Kennedy all converting, with Ray Clemence saving one spot-kick. Jack born 1907 – Left-back Jack Tennant was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He arrived at Anfield from Torquay United in May 1933, appearing 42 times without notching. He moved on to Bolton Wanderers in January 1936, later guesting with the reds during the war. A real Belfast friendly 1983 - Belfast’s Windsor Park was the venue for a testimonial match for former IFA Secretary Billy Drennan between the reds, all in yellow, and deadly rivals Manchester United, who ran out 4-3 winners. Ian Rush bagged a brace, with Graeme Souness also scoring as we led 3-1 at the break with Joe Fagan in charge for the first time. 2000 - We returned to Northern Ireland, thumping Glentoran 4-0 in the Carlsberg Belfast Challenge at The Oval, with Robbie Fowler, Patrik Berger, Vladimír Šmicer and Danny Murphy grabbing the goals. Scandinavian adventures We have faced Scandinavian opposition on many occasions on this day over the years. 1980 - David Johnson, Phil Thompson and Graeme Souness all netted as we beat Danish side Hvidovre IF 3-1. 1987 - We beat Swedish side Karlstad 3-0, with Peter Beardsley and Paul Walsh adding to a penalty from John Aldridge. 1988 - We were in Norway to thump Bryne 5-0, with John Aldridge bagging a brace and Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and John Barnes also on the scoresheet. 1989 - We were back in Sweden again, to draw 1-1 with Vasalunds IF, with Aldo scoring in Scandinavia once more. 1994 - Ian Rush netted our consolation as we lost 3-1 to a Norway XI in the Norway Cup Festival 94, with keeper Michael Stensgaard playing his first reds game. Youngsters departing 2006 - Young Spanish right-back Antonio Barragán was sold to Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for €1m. He had made just one senior appearance for the reds, as a substitute in our Champions League qualifying win at CSKA Sofia in August 2005. 2004 - Anthony Le Tallec joined Saint-Étienne on loan, although he had appeared to have impressed new boss Rafael Benítez in our first pre-season friendly, bagging a brace in our 2-1 defeat of Wrexham. 2011 – Midfielder Tom Ince signed for Blackpool. He had made just one senior reds appearance, as a substitute in our League Cup defeat at home by Northampton Town in September 2010. He struck 33 goals in 113 outings for the Tangerines before joining Hull City in July 2014 when his contract expired. He netted five times in 31 games for the Toon before moving to Anfield for £8m in July 1999. 1982 - Future loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Colchester United on a free transfer from Ipswich Town. He made 221 appearances for the Essex side before moving on to Everton five years later. Not off to Tel Aviv 2001 - It was announced that we would be opening our Champions League campaign against Finnish side Haka, who had been knocked out by Maccabi Haifa in the previous qualifying round. However, Haka were reinstated in the competition at the Israelis’ expense after they had fielded a suspended player. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä, Dietmar Hamann and Robbie Fowler all struck as we won 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in our last pre-season friendly. Swindon reds 2001 - Ex-reds boss Roy Evans was appointed Manager of Second Division Swindon Town, with Neil Ruddock joining as Player/Coach. However, Roy only lasted four months in charge before resigning over the lack of promised funds. Other moves 2007 - Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright joined Stoke City on loan from Sunderland. He played seventeen times as they made a belated return to the top-flight. 2009 – Ex-reserves defender Alan Navarro joined Brighton & Hove Albion on a free transfer from MK Dons. He struck once in 85 times for the Seagulls before joining Swindon Town in June 2012. 2016 – Winger Mohamed Salah left Chelsea to sign for Roma for a reported €15m after a successful loan spell there. 2018 – Future reds coach Gary O’Neil signed for Bolton Wanderers after a successful trial, scoring three times in 31 games and winning the club’s Player of the Year award despite their relegation to League One. He then retiring from playing. 2020 – Midfielder Jordan Rossiter joined Fleetwood Town from Rangers on a free transfer, having played nineteen times in a loan spell during 2019/20. 2021 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho signed a new contract, having netted three times in 122 outings across his first three seasons, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and our first League title for thirty years. Youngsters on target 2010 – Adam Morgan bagged a brace on his England Under-17’s debut as they thumped Finland 5-0 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Vaasa. 2006 - Shane O’Connor was on target as the Republic Of Ireland Under-17’s lost 3-1 to Poland in a tournament game in Hungary. 1994 – Future red Haukur Ingi Gudnason netted while winning his first cap for Iceland Under-17’s as they beat Norway 2-1. 2011 – Dani Pacheco was in action as Spain Under-20’s beat Ecuador 2-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia. Other international reds 1999 - Brad Friedel won his 59th cap as the USA beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in Guadalajara in the Confederations Cup to claim third place. 2021 – Future red Wataru Endō represented host nation Japan as they lost 1-0 to Spain in the Semi-final of the Olympics in Saitama. Role model reds 2011 - Managing Director Ian Ayre was presented with the Football Is More Role Model award in the Social Department of a Professional Club category in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland. -
The start of a dynasty 1974 - Bob Paisley was appointed Manager, a fortnight after Bill Shankly’s resignation. He became Britain’s most successful boss, leading us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five Charity Shields in just nine years in charge. In comes Milan 2001 - Milan Baroš signed from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m, although he was not granted a work permit and allowed to come to Anfield for another five months. He bagged 27 goals in 108 reds games, before moving to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and Worthington Cup. To the World Cup Final 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s 2-1 World Cup Semi-final defeat of Portugal at Wembley. He would shortly become the first red to claim football’s top honour while with the club. Double debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko both made their reds debuts as we won 3-1 at FBK Kaunas in the first leg of our Champions League Second Round qualifier, with Jamie Carragher nabbing his first goal for more than six years! Djibril Cissé also scored with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty. Carra said, “If I'd have known I was going to score against Kaunas I would have worn a t-shirt under my Liverpool shirt with Michael’s name on it. I want to dedicate that goal to Michael Shields and all his family who are suffering so badly right now.” Another win 2020 – We came from a goal down to win 3-1 behind closed doors at Newcastle United to finish the season on a club record 99 points, eighteen points ahead of runners up Manchester City. Dwight Gayle scored after just 25 seconds, the most recent of his five goals past us, but Virgil van Dijk headed up level, with Divock Origi and Sadio Mané both on target after the break. Rafa’s first capture 2004 - Josemi signed from Málaga for £2m, becoming new boss Rafael Benítez’s first signing. He made just 35 reds appearances at right-back before joining Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp in January 2006. Wingers on the move 2006 - Jermaine Pennant signed from Birmingham City for £6.7m. He made 81 appearances, bagging three goals before joining Real Zaragoza in July 2009 after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. On the same day, it was announced that Paul Anderson and Scott Carson had signed new four- and five-year contracts respectively. 2012 - Paul Anderson joined Bristol City from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, scoring three times in 23 games for the Robins before moving to Ipswich Town in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas a year later. Stéph on the move 2005 - Stéphane Henchoz signed for Wigan Athletic. He had made a total of 205 reds appearances, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 and another League Cup two years later. He played 32 times for the Latics before rejoining Blackburn Rovers in September 2006. Birth and death 1928 - Half-back and reds skipper Johnny Wheeler was born in Crosby. He joined his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield when he signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000 in September 1956 and made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. 1963 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie died. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. Justice denied 2000 - The judge in the trial of retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge at Hillsborough, ruled that he should not have to face a retrial, after the jury could not agree on a verdict. Off the mark 2009 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace, his first reds goals, as we thumped a Singapore League Select XI 5-0 in their National Stadium. The other goals came from Andriy Voronin, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres. 2002 - The reds thumped a Swiss XI 5-1 at their pre-season training camp. El-Hadji Diouf and Grégory Vignal both scored their first reds goals, while Neil Mellor netted a brace in his first senior appearance. Milan Baroš added the other. Tony Hateley bagged the other, while Ray Clemence made an early appearance as a substitute. 1995 - Stan Collymore made his reds bow as we beat Birmingham City in the pre-season T.N.T. Inter-City Challenge Cup 1-0 at St. Andrews, thanks to an Ian Rush strike. Jari in Amsterdam 2001 - Ex-Ajax star Jari Litmanen struck the only goal of the game for us against Rafael Benítez’s Valencia to send the Amsterdam ArenA crowd wild. It was a brilliant volley after a fifty-yard run and superb cross from Bernard Diomède. Leverkusen for the first time 1991 - We encountered Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the first time, holding them to a goalless draw in their Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion in a pre-season friendly. Spectators were allowed in for free to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bayer company moving to Leverkusen. Off to a bad start 1994 - We kicked off our pre-season campaign by going down 4-1 at First Division Bolton Wanderers, with Ian Rush grabbing our late consolation. Defenders signing on 2021 – Right-back Conor Bradley signed a new contract. He has so far made five senior reds appearances. On the same day, left-back Yasser Larouci joined French side Troyes, after being released by the reds after just two senior outings. 2022 – Left-back Luke Chambers renewed his deal with the reds, making it onto the first-team bench twice in the following campaign. Taking home the bacon 1987 - The reds beat Danish side Aalborg Chang 4-0 in a friendly to celebrate their 75th anniversary. John Aldridge grabbed a brace, including one from the spot, while John Barnes netted for the second consecutive game. The scoring was completed by Ronnie Whelan. Other foreign friendlies 2018 – We beat Manchester City 2-1 in the International Champions Cup in New Jersey. Mohamed Salah equalised a minute after Leroy Sané had given City the lead, with Sadio Mané converting an injury time penalty to hand us victory. We have twice faced Linfield at Windsor Park on this day in history. 1969 - Emlyn Hughes and Ron Yeats netted as we won 2-1. 1997 - We won by the same score, with Michael Owen grabbing a brace. 1992 - Dean Saunders was on target from the spot as we lost 2-1 to AS Monaco in the Tournoi de Paris at the Parc des Princes. Keepers moving 2006 - Sander Westerveld returned to Spain to join UD Almería, after brief spells back in England with Portsmouth and Everton. He made 33 League appearances in his one season there, as they gained promotion to the top flight. On the same day, former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Halifax Town. 2008 - Brad Friedel joined Aston Villa from Blackburn Rovers, after 356 games for the Ewood Park outfit. He played 131 times for the Villains before moving to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in June 2011. He only struck four times in 25 games as he suffered two serious injuries, spending a season on loan at Southampton whom he joined permanently in July 2019 for an initial £18m. 2001 – Czech keeper Vítězslav Jaroš was born in Příbram. He signed from SK Slavia Praha in August 2017, making his first appearance for the club in our 6-0 friendly win at Tranmere Rovers in July 2019, so far making it onto the first-team bench on four occasions. 1999 – Left-back Tony Gallacher was born in Glasgow. He signed from Falkirk in January 2018 for £200,000, making his senior debut in our 5-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019. Visiting skipper Antonio Rattin was dismissed after persistent Argentine fouling shortly before half-time, allegedly for “the look on his face”, but initially refused to leave the pitch. In memoriam 1993 - We kicked off our pre-season programme with a benefit match at the Don Valley Stadium against a Kevin Keegan All Star XI, in memory of a Liverpool fan killed in a road accident. Happy birthdays 1938 - Legendary centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958. His 245 League goals remain a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. 1966 - Hunt bagged both goals as England beat France 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game at Wembley, on his 28th birthday. Clubmate Ian Callaghan also played, winning only his second cap. 1948 - Reserves keeper Frank Lane was born in Wallasey. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. New signings 2005 - Peter Crouch signed from Southampton for £7m on a four-year contract. He failed to score in his first nineteen reds games, but went on to bag thirteen goals in his final thirty games of his first season, helping us to claim the FA Cup in May. He went on to score 42 times in 134 outings in total before being sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2016 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed from Augsburg for £4.2m. He struck twice in 53 outings before moving on to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. On the same day, keeper Ádám Bogdán joined Wigan Athletic on loan, playing seventeen times as the Latics were relegated to League One. Keeping no more 2007 - Jerzy Dudek signed for Real Madrid after 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He turned out just twelve times for the Spanish giants before retiring in May 2011. 2018 - Danny Ward was sold to Leicester City for £12.5m after just three senior reds games. He has so only played fourteen times in cup competitions for the Foxes across his first four campaigns. Heading off 2021 – Serbian midfielder Marko Grujić was sold to Porto for £10.5m after a successful loan spell. He had signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m in January 2016, immediately being loaned back for the rest of the season. He struck once in sixteen senior reds appearances. On the same day, Nigerian forward moved on to Union Berlin for £6.5m. He had arrived from Imperial Academy for £400,000 in August 2015, spending most of his time out on loan. 1900 - Inside-right David Wilson left the reds after just two senior appearances since arriving from East Bontas in May 1899. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby signed from Everton for £6m, prompting an unprecedented tide of bitterness from across Stanley Park. He became the first player to switch directly from Everton to Liverpool since Dave Hickson in November 1959. Barmby netted eight times in 58 reds games, moving on to Leeds United for £2.75m in August 2002. Red departures 2017 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva was sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m. He made 346 senior appearances after signing from Grêmio for a reported £5m in May 2007, notching just seven times. 1992 - Barry Venison was sold to Newcastle United for £250,000. He had struck three times in 158 appearances for the reds since arriving from Sunderland for £200,000 in August 1986, winning two League titles and an FA Cup in his time at Anfield. 2008 – Keeper Scott Carson was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. Happy birthday Ray 1922 - Welsh international full-back Ray Lambert was born in Bagillt, Flintshire. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. Other birthdays 1905 - Outside-right Billy Hartill was born. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He had previously been a prolific marksman with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, bagging 164 goals in 221 League games. 1895 - Mid-1920’s reserves full-back James Garner was born in Manchester. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. Youngsters on their way out 2006 - French centre-back Carl Medjani signed for Lorient permanently, having previously spent a season on loan there. He made only nine League appearances to add to the 25 from his first spell at Stade Le Moustoir, before joining AJ Ajaccio. 2011 – Argentine midfielder Gerardo Bruna was sold to Blackpool, having helped the reserves to claim the League at the end of his first season in 2008. He made just four substitute appearances for the Tangerines before moving to S.D. Huesca in September 2013. Adam’s day 2008 – Reserves winger Adam Hammill signed a new contract until 2011, also joining Blackpool on loan on the same day. He struck once in 23 outings for the Seasiders, and later spent time with fellow Championship side Barnsley that season, moving permanently to Oakwell in August 2009. On the same day, future red Fabio Borini featured as Italy lost 2-0 to Portugal. 2016 – Sheyi Ojo played for England Under-19’s in their 2-1 defeat of Croatia in a group-stage game in Germany. In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He bagged four goals in 71 outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2006, initially on loan. He usurped Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years, and went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000 in August 1981. Souey departs 1984 - Graeme Souness left for Sampdoria in Italy for a £650,000 fee. He had been a dominant presence in our midfield on 359 occasions, netting 55 times as we won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1959 – Scottish keeper Tommy Younger left the reds to sign for Falkirk. Red births and deaths 1889 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie was born in Glasgow. He signed from Everton along with Billy Lacey for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, but only managed to score five times in 34 appearances for the reds, including one on his debut at Bury. He returned north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian for £400 in May 1914. 1987 - Spanish right-back Antonio Barragán was born in Pontedeume in Galicia, Spain. Happy birthday Sammy 1959 - Sammy Lee was born in Liverpool. He had a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. Legends’ farewells 1992 - A sad day as Bob Paisley had to retire from the board due to ill health. He died four years later. 2013 - Jamie Carragher announced his retirement from playing at the end of the season. He has the honour of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield, while his club medal haul includes two League championships, an FA Cup, FA Charity Shield and a Second Division title. Happy birthday Jim 1963 - Left-back Jim Beglin was born in Waterford in the Republic of Ireland. He was Bob Paisley’s last signing, from Shamrock Rovers for £20,000 in May 1983, and went on to score three times in 98 reds appearances. He helped us to four trophies in 1986, the League and FA Cup double, a shared FA Charity Shield and the Screen Sport Super Cup. After breaking his leg against Everton in January 1987, he moved on to Leeds United, and is now a regular TV commentator. In and out 2014 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m, immediately re-signing on loan for the following season. Olympian reds 2012 – Future red Daniel Sturridge netted as Great Britain beat United Arab Emirates 3-1 in a Olympics Finals group game at Wembley, with Craig Bellamy and future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker also in action. This game was immediately preceded by Senegal’s 2-0 defeat of Uruguay, who were skippered by Luis Suárez and also included Sebastián Coates, with future red Sadio Mané on the winning side. He scored ten times in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died in October of that year. He was sold to the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. 1931 - Centre-half Fred Tomley was born in Liverpool. He signed from Litherland in September 1953 but only made two senior appearances before joining Chester in July 1955. More red arrivals 2008 – Brazilian keeper Diego Cavalieri signed from Palmeiras for £3.5m. He only made ten senior appearances, keeping four clean sheets, but sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. Happy days 2009 – Xabi Alonso married Nagore Aranburu in San Sebastián. 2013 – Ex-reserves midfielder Tom Ince, Paul’s son, became a father for the first time when his partner, Charly Cottrell, gave birth to Halle Rae at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, where Ince himself had been born 21 years earlier.
