The start of it all 1892 - Everton voted to move from Anfield. John Houlding was therefore left with an empty ground, but no team to play in it. Within six months, Liverpool FC had been formed and was on its way to taking the Lancashire League by storm. God strikes again 2006 - Robbie Fowler struck the first goal of his second reds spell, opening the scoring against Fulham at Anfield. Collins John equalised before an own goal from Michael Brown put us 2-1 ahead at the break. Fernando Morientes and Peter Crouch scored late on before Stephen Warnock grabbed his only ever goal for the cl

African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. Yet another win 1981 - We registered our 85th consecutive home match without defeat as we beat Alliance Premier League side Altrincham 4-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield, thanks to goals from Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and a Kenny Dalglish brace, with shipping clerk Graham Heathcote converting a penalty for the visitors in front of the Kop. Future Academy Manager John Owens and Zak Whitbread’s dad Barry were both on the losing side while reds legend Bill Shankly bizarrely travelled to the game on the Altrincham team coach and went into the visitors’ dressing room before the game, as

Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th red

Sir Roger’s treble 1961 - Roger Hunt scored a hat-trick in our 6-1 defeat of Walsall at Anfield, already his second treble of the season as we went on to claim the Second Division title. Kevin Lewis, Jimmy Melia and Ian St. John netted the others, with Ron Yeats putting through his own net. Hurry up Harry 1893 - Forward Harry Bradshaw signed from Northwich Victoria. He struck 51 times in 138 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title on two occasions, and winning an England cap in his five years at Anfield, so becoming the first ever international red. He moved on to Southern

Steve McManaman grabbed the other, with Dougie Freedman on target for the visitors. Chico’s first 1983 – Steve Nicol grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club

His club record 346 strikes in 660 games across two spells with the reds helped us to five League titles, the European Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the Screen Sport Super Cup, after signing from Chester for just £300,000 in May 1980, moving on to Leeds United in May 1996. 1943 - Chris Lawler was born in Liverpool. Aldo’s record 1987 - John Aldridge scored in his tenth consecutive League game, including one from the previous season, netting from the spot as we beat Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Anfield. Craig Johnston had a goal chalked off but also scored, while John Barnes bagged a brace. This goalscoring run remains a joint top-flight record, for any club, and took him to twelve goals already that season. Ex-red Ian Rush was watching in the crowd. Later that day, Kenny Dalglish, Peter Robinson and Chairman John Smith met with Ray Houghton and his wife at a Southport restaurant to agree to his £825

World Cup winners 1966 - Our very own centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt won a World Cup winner’s medal as England famously defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley, after extra-time. On the same day, former reserves forward George Scott married Carole. Bill Shankly called him “the best player ever to play for my reserves”, but he failed to break through to the first team, later turning out for Aberdeen and Tranmere Rovers. 1997 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, who had won the World Cup with West Germany in 1990, was signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Happy birthday Jan 1963 - Jan Mølby was born in Kolding. The big Dane arrived at Anfield in August 1984, signed by Joe Fagan for £225,000 from Ajax. He netted 61 times in his 292 reds games, including a remarkable forty of his 42 attempted spot-kicks. He won three League titles, two FA Cups and Screen Sport Super Cup while at Anfield, before moving into management. His armband proved he was a red 2007 - Fernando Torres signed from Club Atlético de Madrid for £20.2m in a six-year deal, although this fee was greatly inflated in the media. Death of a true gentleman 2001 - Joe Fagan died aged eighty. He joined the coaching staff at Anfield in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager under Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League title, European Cup and League Cup as we won 71 of his 131 games in charge. He retired in the aftermath of the Heysel tragedy in May 1985. 1958 – He was appointed Assistant Trainer under Phil Taylor’s management, replacing Dicky Dorsett. 2019 – Noel White died. He had resigned from the Board in Oc

A treble for Ron, Ron, Ron 1990 - Ronnie Rosenthal scored a hat-trick in his second reds appearance, and his first start, as we beat Charlton Athletic 4-0 in a League encounter at Selhurst Park. Future Addick John Barnes nabbed the other late on. Andy off the mark 2011 – We beat Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield, with right-back Jon Flanagan making his reds bow. Andy Carroll struck his first two reds goals, with Dirk Kuyt also netting before the break. 1952 – We won 2-1 at Maine Road in a First Division fixture, thanks to goals from inside-forward Kevin Baron and winger Jimmy Payne.
