The first title 1901 – We won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion to clinch our first League title, with inside-right Johnny Walker on target in the first half of our final game of the season against the already-relegated Baggies. A fife and drum band playing “The Conquering Hero” welcomed the team back into Liverpool. The plan was to lift Club Secretary Tom Watson shoulder high in celebration, but as the Liverpool Echo said, “No arms were long enough to grip his girth.” However, our two inter-war meetings with the Baggies both resulted in 2-1 defeats. 1922 - Harry Beadles nabbed our consolation at Anfield, with Howard Gregory bagging a brace for the Baggies. 1933 - Tom Bradshaw was on target at The Hawthorns, with forward Ted Crawford playing his eighth and last reds game. Billy Richardson scored one of his nine goals past us, with Jock Carter also on target. Nando’s last 2006 - Fernando Morientes scored his twelfth and final reds goal, which was our 300th against Aston Villa in all competitions. Gareth Barry equalised with one of his four goals past us to date before Steven Gerrard struck his twentieth and 21st goals of the season to hand us a 3-1 victory in our last home game of the season. This brought us to 48 points from home League games that campaign, our highest ever tally in a 38-game season. Djimi Traoré made his 141st and last reds appearance in this game. 1961 - Dave Hickson played his 67th and last reds game in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland, with Roger Hunt netting our goal. We have twice more faced Aston Villa in the First Division on this day in history. 1899 - Centre-forward George Allan made his 96th and final reds appearance as we were thumped 5-0 at Villa Park. This was our last match of the season, in which Villa won the title by two points from the second-placed reds. Fred Wheldon struck the last two of his five goals against the reds, with Jack Devey nabbing two of his seven past us and Jimmy Crabtree also on target. 1911 - We won 3-1 at Anfield, with Ronald Orr bagging a brace and John McDonald also on the scoresheet as we finished in thirteenth after this our final game of the season, with Joe Walters netting one of his five goals against the reds. Unfortunately, this result helped Manchester United to claim their second League title. 1972 – We lost the second leg of the FA Youth Cup Final at Anfield 4-2 to Aston Villa, having already been beaten 1-0 in the first game. The reds included Brian Kettle and Phil Thompson. Testimonial for Shanks 1975 - A testimonial match for Bill Shankly was played at Anfield. Emlyn Hughes and Jimmy Case both bagged braces, with Alan Waddle and Tommy Smith also on target as the reds beat a Don Revie Select side 6-2. 1992 - We took part in another testimonial, drawing a benefit game for our former reserves forward Wayne Harrison 2-2 at Oldham Athletic. Don Hutchinson and Ronnie Rosenthal were on the scoresheet. Harrison had signed from Oldham for £250,000 in January 1985 but never made a senior reds appearance before he retired due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. Falling at the final hurdle 2010 – We were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League at the Semi-final stage on away goals by Club Atlético de Madrid, the third time in our history we had fallen foul of this rule in Europe. Alberto Aquilani opened the scoring just before the break with his second and final goal for the club, with the tie having to go into extra time. Yossi Benayoun scored his 29th and last reds goal early in the additional half hour, but Diego Forlán then bagged a crucial away goal, the last of his four past us. Philipp Degen played his thirteenth and final reds game. King Kenny starts out 1968 - Kenny Dalglish signed as a professional for Celtic. He helped them to four League titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup, bagging 167 goals in 322 games before moving to Anfield for £440,000 in August 1977. 2018 – Roberto Firmino signed a new contract, having scored fifty times in 140 reds games to that point. 1957 – Full-back Allan Jones and winger Johnny Morrissey both signed pro terms with the reds. Morrissey struck six times in 37 outings before crossing the park to Everton for £10,000 in September 1962, for whom he scored fifty times in 314 appearances, helping them to two League titles. Wembley disappointment 1950 - We lost our second FA Cup Final, this time 2-0 to Arsenal with Reg Lewis scoring in each half, the last of his five strikes against us, despite the reds having beaten the Gunners twice in the League that season. It was to be another fifteen years before we finally won the famous trophy. We had to wear blue socks in this match, due to a mix-up over changing from the usual red ones to white, with neither side playing in their regular home strips. Off the mark 1995 – Steve Harkness struck the first of his three reds goals early on at Norwich City, with Robert Ullathorne equalising soon after. Ian Rush grabbed the winner as we won 2-1, with City on their way down to the Endsleigh League. Beating the Clarets We have defeated Burnley twice at Anfield on this day in history, without conceding a single goal. 1905 - Jack Cox, Robbie Robinson and Jack Parkinson were on the scoresheet. Keeper Ned Doig saved a penalty in what was our final game of the season, as we claimed the Second Division championship for a third time. 1914 - A friendly ended 1-0 to the reds, with centre-half Bob Ferguson netting. Award winners 2022 - Mohamed Salah was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for the second time, as he eventually netted 31 times in 51 reds games that season, helping us to claim a cup double. On the same day, young forward Fidel O’Rourke signed a new deal. He had joined the Academy as an Under-14. 2023 – On-loan Conor Bradley won the Player’s Player of the Season, Young Player of the Year (joint) and fans' Player of the Season after an impressive campaign with Bolton Wanderers. 2007 - On-loan keeper Scott Carson was named Charlton Athletic’s Player of the Season, despite the Addicks being on their way down to the Championship. 2001 – Steven Gerrard was named the PFA Young Player of the Year, to become the fourth reds recipient after Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler (twice) and Michael Owen. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year, for the first of eight times, a record in the Premier League era. Peter’s double ton 1968 – Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Jimmy Greaves bagged one of his twelve goals against the reds before Tony Hateley headed in an equaliser. Winger Peter Thompson made his 200th League appearance for the reds. Off to Plainmoor 1935 - We played a friendly at Torquay United as part of the transfer of left-back Jack Tennant and fellow defender Alf Gray from the Gulls the previous season. We lost 7-2, with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys on target for the reds. 1924 – We lost 4-1 at Partick Thistle in a testimonial match for the Jags’ Tommy Crichton. First caps 1981 - Ronnie Whelan won the first of his 53 Republic of Ireland caps, helping them to a 3-1 victory over Czechoslovakia at Lansdowne Road as a substitute. Also in action that day was Terry McDermott, coming off the bench as Romania held England to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. 1980 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén won his first Under-21’s cap as Sweden lost 2-1 to the USSR in a friendly in Kyiv. International reds on target 1987 - Ian Rush netted while winning his final cap in his first spell as a reds player. Wales drew 1-1 with Czechoslovakia in a European Championships qualifier in Wrexham. Meanwhile, Jan Mølby struck the only goal of Denmark’s win in Finland, his first goal for his country. John Aldridge, Ronnie Whelan and future reds John Barnes and Ray Houghton all also turned out for their countries that day. 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott won his fourth and final cap for England Under-15’s, bagging a brace to complete a streak of scoring in each appearance. England beat Austria 5-3 in a tournament game in Italy. Young reds for England 1997 - Michael Owen netted for the England Under-18’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Portugal at Gigg Lane. Jamie Carragher and future red Emile Heskey appeared for the Under-21’s at The Valley on the same day, as England were held to a goalless draw by Georgia in another qualifier while Alex Manninger played as Austria Under-21’s thumped Estonia 7-1, with fellow future red Vegard Heggem featuring as Norway Under-21’s beat Finland 3-0. 2001 - John Welsh scored from the spot as England Under-16’s beat Germany 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after their European Championships Quarter-final ended 1-1 at the Cellnet Riverside Stadium. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani won his thirteenth and final cap for Italy in the same competition as they drew 1-1 with Spain in Sunderland, with Fernando Torres netting for Spain who also went through after penalties. Derby disappointment 1895 – We lost the Liverpool Senior Cup Final 3-0 at Goodison Park. Other reds games 2000 – We lost 2-0 at Chelsea with George Weah and Roberto Di Matteo both on target inside the opening quarter of an hour. 1978 – Terry McDermott and David Fairclough struck as we won 2-0 at West Ham United. 1964 – We lost 3-1 at Stoke City as we ended our title-winning campaign with a defeat. Keith Bebbington scored for the Potters before Alf Arrowsmith levelled the scores. John Ritchie netted one of his five goals past us and Peter Dobing struck one of his eight. 1963 – Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 in L4. 1925 – Cardiff City won 2-1 at Anfield with Fred Baron bagging our goal. Future red Harry Beadles scored, with Jimmy Gill netting one of his six past us. Keepers in opposition 2004 – Pepe Reina came off the bench for Spain Under-21’s as they beat Australia Under-23’s 1-0 in Lorca, with fellow future reds keeper Brad Jones winning the first of his six caps at this level for the losing side. Lee Peltier played for England Under-18’s on the same day. No longer a Tractor boy 2001 - John Scales was released by Ipswich Town. He had only made four appearances since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur the previous July. Leo in the big time 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his first cap as a Rosenborg BK player, and twelfth in total, playing alongside clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye and fellow future red Torben Piechnik as Denmark beat Norway 1-0 in Århus. Future reds Nigel Clough and Paul Stewart and ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton also featured in internationals the same day. Also in international action 1972 – Emlyn Hughes played as England lost 3-1 to West Germany in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. 2002 – David Raven captained England Under-17’s to a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in a European Championships group game in Denmark, with David Mannix and Mark Smyth also in action. 2003 – Daniel Sjölund featured as Finland Under-21’s lost 3-0 to Russia in a friendly. 2016 – Curtis Jones played for England Under-15’s as they beat USA Under-16’s 4-3 but then lost a penalty shoot-out 7-5 in Italy. 2019 – Luke Chambers and Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-15’s in a 6-0 thumping of Qatar. 2022 – Carter Pennington converted his spot kick as England Under-15’s lost a shoot-out 5-4 after their friendly in Slovenia had ended goalless. -
Goalscoring debutants 1946 - Forward Cyril Done scored on his official reds debut as we were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic at home. He had also scored in the previous first-class reds game in which he had played - seven years before, just before the outbreak of war when the season was cancelled. Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring. Another record for Michael 2002 - Michael Owen scored his nineteenth England goal, more than any other red in history until it was equalled by Steven Gerrard in August 2010, in his 43rd game as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in their Euro 2004 qualifier in Bratislava. Gerrard and Emile Heskey both also played. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä netted in Finland’s 3-0 defeat of Azerbaijan in Helsinki, playing alongside ex-red Jari Litmanen who was winning his eightieth cap. Meanwhile, Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both won their first caps as reds players as Senegal drew 2-2 with Nigeria in a Joola Disaster Charity Match in Dakar. Bruno Cheyrou, Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Alex Manninger, Fernando Morientes and Christian Poulsen all also played in internationals that day. Kenny scores away at Anfield 1977 - Kenny Dalglish scored with a header to complete Scotland’s 2-0 defeat of Wales at Anfield, following a controversial penalty, as he won his fiftieth cap. This result ensured the Scots qualified for the World Cup Finals in Argentina. Joey Jones and John Toshack were on the losing, ‘home’ side. Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both featured as the Republic of Ireland were held to a goalless draw by Bulgaria at Lansdowne Road on the same day. 1984 – Dalglish was dropped for the first time in his reds career when Joe Fagan left him out of our Friday night live televised League game at Tottenham Hotspur that we lost 1-0, thanks to a first-half Garth Crooks goal, the first of his four past us. Fagan later admitted that it was his “daftest decision” as reds boss. Europe’s best 1978 – The reds were named as European team of the year at a ceremony in Paris, having retained the European Cup at Wembley earlier that year. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Sammy the champion 1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. However, their first leg lead was enough to hand them the title, 5-4 on aggregate. Future red David Hodgson also played. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have faced Manchester United three times on this day in history. 1996 - David Beckham netted the only goal of the game at Old Trafford. 1968 - We beat the European Champions 2-0 at Anfield when Ian St. John and Alun Evans struck. 1895 - We thumped Newton Heath as they were then known 7-1 at home, with two apiece from Frank Becton, Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and Fred Geary, and a goal from Jimmy Ross. Into Romania 1966 – Half-back Willie Stevenson put through his own net while playing his 200th red game to start the scoring as we lost 3-1 in Romania to Petrolul Ploieşti in the second leg of our European Cup First Round tie. Roger Hunt grabbed our goal, with home defender Gheorghe Florea sent off late on in a bruising encounter. The tie ended level at 3-3 on aggregate and, as this was before the away goals rule, a third game was needed, which we won in Brussels a week later. Bill’s treble 1938 – Forward Bill Kinghorn scored a hat-trick as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 6-1 in the second replay of our Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie. John Browning bagged a brace, with Ted Harston also netting. Saints beaten 1985 - Steve McMahon scored the only goal of the game as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield. Six Saints were booked, including ex-red Jimmy Case and future red Mark Wright. Derby despair 1918 - We lost a Wartime League fixture 4-2 at Goodison with our goals coming from Thomas Green and a Billy Wareing own goal. Kenny in charge again 1991 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Manager of Blackburn Rovers. He led them to their first League title in 81 years in 1995, before moving upstairs. Salif departs 2006 - Salif Diao joined Stoke City on loan. He turned out seventeen times for them before making the switch permanent in January 2007. On the same day, Steven Gerrard was named on the thirty-man shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year awards. He had finished seventh the year before, and this time he was named in twelfth place as Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro claimed the prize. 1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie left the reds to join Rochdale, after a trial at Millwall earlier in the year. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930. Red trebles 2005 - Future red Fernando Torres grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, as Spain thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Serravalle. 1932 – Gordon Hodgson scored three times in our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round defeat of Accrington Stanley at Anfield. Dave Wright also struck in a 5-1 win. 1908 – Bert Goode netted a treble as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie 4-2 at Nelson, with Arthur Berry also netting. Igor on his way 2000 - It was announced that Igor Bišcan would be joining the reds from Dinamo Zagreb during the Croatian mid-season break. He went on to play 118 reds games, netting three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul in 2005. Beaten twice by Wednesday We have lost two top-flight fixtures to The Wednesday on this day in history. 1901 - Tom Robertson grabbed our consolation in a 2-1 home defeat. Harry Chapman bagged the first of his six strikes against the reds, with Andrew Wilson netting one of his eight past us. 1912 - We lost 1-0 at Hillsborough, with David McLean missing a penalty for the home side. We have also entertained Birmingham City in the First Division twice on this day. 1929 - Jim Smith was on target in a 1-1 draw as John Lindsay played his sixteenth and final reds game. 1935 - Berry Nieuwenhuys was on the scoresheet in our 2-1 defeat as Fred Harris netted one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Jones also scoring. Don’s last 1957 – Right-back Don Campbell struck his second and final reds goal as we beat Swansea Town 4-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Tony Rowley bagged a brace with Jimmy Melia also on target. Stan’s farewell 2009 – Wing-half Stan Palk died at Royal Liverpool Hospital. He only played thirteen reds games after signing from South Liverpool in 1940. He moved to Port Vale in July 1948, who were managed by ex-red Gordon Hodgson, for £10,000, the record fee we had received to date. Other international goalscorers 1983 - Sammy Lee netted in England’s 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Hungary, his final goal for his country. Ian Rush bagged a brace on the same day as Wales thrashed Romania 5-0, with ex-red Joey Jones also featuring. Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish, future red John Wark and ex-red Frank McGarvey all featured as Scotland were held to a 1-1 draw by Belgium at Hampden Park. 2013 – Ex-red Carl Medjani struck as Algeria lost 3-2 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Burkina Faso, his first goal for his country and only one while on loan with Olympiacos from AS Monaco. Jordon Ibe, Lucas and future red Sadio Mané were also in international action that day. 1996 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason netted the only goal of Iceland Under-19’s friendly in Belgium. 2002 - Future red Andriy Voronin bagged his first goal for the Ukraine, while winning his third cap in their 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying defeat of Greece in Kyiv. 2004 - Harry Kewell struck as Australia thumped the Solomon Islands 6-0 in the second leg of the OFC Nations Cup Final in Sydney, to claim the title 11-1 on aggregate, and therefore also qualify for the 2005 Confederations Cup. 1977 - Ray Kennedy netted his final England goal in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win in Luxembourg. Ian Callaghan won his fourth and final cap, while Emlyn Hughes skippered a side that also included Ray Clemence and Terry McDermott. 1963 - Ian St. John was on target as Scotland won 2-1 in Northern Ireland in the British International Championships. 2010 – Raul Meireles scored for Portugal in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Iceland. David N’Gog struck as France Under-21’s won 3-1 in a friendly in Denmark. Ex-red Robbie Keane had a penalty saved while skippering the Republic of Ireland to a 1-1 qualifying draw in Slovakia. Andy Carroll played his only international while on loan at West Ham United. Raheem Sterling was booked while winning his first cap for England Under-21’s in their 1-0 victory over Serbia in a European Championships play-off at Carrow Road, with Jordan Henderson skippering a side that also featured ex-red Tom Ince and future red Steven Caulker. 2015 – Danny Ings made his senior bow as Roy Hodgson’s England won 3-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier in Lithuania, his only cap as a reds player, with future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target. He made 650 reds appearances, netting 59 times while becoming our most decorated player of all time, including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1996 - Jamie Carragher signed professional terms at Anfield. He made a total of 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, in a multitude of positions, and is ranked number two in the club’s all-time appearance holders list. He netted just five times as he helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and two FA Charity Shields. 1987 - Reserves defender Brian Mooney joined Preston North End on loan, later signing for them permanently for a £25,000 fee. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, only managing to net 26 goals in 128 appearances while at Deepdale, winning their Player of the Year award in 1988/89 as they missed out on promotion to the Second Division, then moving back into the top flight to sign for Sunderland for £225,000 in 1991. Tim Cahill was sent off late on for a challenge on Xabi Alonso. 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield as Steven Gerrard scored in the League for the sixteenth consecutive season, a new club record. Phil Jagielka equalised for the visitors with a wonder strike from distance in stoppage time. Three off in the derby 1999 - Sander Westerveld, Steven Gerrard and Everton’s Francis Jeffers were all sent off in our 1-0 derby defeat at Anfield. Steve Staunton went in goal for the final minutes, keeping a clean sheet and saving from future red Abel Xavier. On the same day, Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo was born in Quibdó. He joined the reds in February 2018, so far spending all of his time out on loan. 1987 – Hungarian keeper Ádám Bogdán was born in Budapest. He arrived on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers in July 2015, making six senior appearances but spending much of his time out on loan, finally being released at the end of last season. 1918 - Left-half Joe Dines died in First World War action in France. He won Olympic Gold in 1912 before giving up his teaching job and signing on at Anfield. However, he only made one senior reds appearance before the war intervened. In comes Tom 1899 – Defender Thomas Hunter signed from Scottish side Beith. He only made four senior appearances for the club, moving on to Preston North End in May 1902. Lawro on the receiving end 1980 - Mark Lawrenson and Michael Robinson both featured for the visitors as we saw off a stubborn Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield. Graeme Souness bagged a brace as we eventually won 4-1, with Terry McDermott and David Fairclough also netting, and Brian Horton on target for the Seagulls. 1986 – Lawrenson played his 200th League game for the reds as Aston Villa held us to a 3-3 draw at Anfield. Steve Hodge scored one of his goals against us early on, before John Wark equalised from the spot. Garry Thompson restored the visitors’ lead after a Bruce Grobbelaar fumble, but Wark drew us level again before the break. Allan Evans converted a penalty to again put the Villains in front, but former Villa player Steve McMahon struck our third leveller. Rushie off the mark in Italy 1987 - Ex-red Ian Rush scored his first two official goals for Juventus as they beat Pescara 3-1 at the Stadio Comunale. Red centuries 1919 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell played his hundredth League game for the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Newcastle United. Fred Pagnam struck our goal, his thirtieth and last for the club. 1967 – We lost 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers in our League Cup Second Round replay as Ian Callaghan added to a Tommy Smith penalty. Gordon Taylor struck the first two of his four goals against the reds, with Frederick Hill also scoring. This was Phil Taylor’s hundredth game in charge of the reds. Harkness on the move 2000 - Steve Harkness left Blackburn Rovers for Sheffield Wednesday for £200,000. He went on to make 32 appearances in two seasons with the Owls before signing for Conference side Chester City on a free transfer. World stars 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals in Egypt as they lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Nemeth and András Simon all featured in Hungary’s 3-0 defeat by Honduras in the same competition. A friendly trip to Sweden 1977 - We played IFK Göteborg in a friendly with David Fairclough adding a brace to a strike from Jimmy Case in our 3-2 win. For Tom 1920 – A benefit game was staged for inside-right Tom Bennett against an International XI at Anfield. He had struck 77 times in seventy wartime games, but only made one first-class appearance before ill health forced his early retirement. He sadly died from tuberculosis in January 1923, aged just 31. Other reds games 1997 – Robbie Fowler was on target as we lost 2-1 at West Ham United. 1958 – We lost a Second Division match 2-1 to Cardiff City at Anfield, with Alan Banks putting us in front. Joe Bonson levelled with one of his five goals past us, before Ron Hewitt nabbed the winner. Also in international action 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first goal as a reds player as Uruguay beat Canada 2-0 in a friendly in Slovakia, with Isaac Mabaya winning his second and last cap for England Under-19’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 4-2 in Denmark, with Luke Chambers and Lee Jonas also featuring. In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. Dave Hickson netted a brace for the reds, with Jim Harrop and Alan A’Court also on target. Other stars in action for the international side included Jimmy Armfield, Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, Stanley Matthews, Don Revie and Bert Trautmann. Goalscoring debuts 1929 - Forward Jimmy Smith netted a brace on his reds bow, to hand us a 2-1 win at Manchester United. Joe Spence struck the last of his five goals against the reds. 1968 - New record signing Alun Evans scored on his debut in our 4-0 win at home to Leicester City, with all four goals coming in the opening twelve minutes, courtesy also of Ron Yeats, a Tommy Smith penalty and Ian Callaghan. 1999 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell scored on his only senior reds appearance as we beat Hull City 4-2 in the second leg of our Worthington Cup Second Round tie, with Karl-Heinz Riedle netting a brace in his 76th and last appearance, and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. More recent reds firsts 2021 – Joe Gomez skippered the reds for the first time as we won a League Cup Third Round tie 3-0 on our way to claiming the trophy for the ninth time. Right-back Conor Bradley and midfielders Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton all debuted, with keeper Caoimhín Kelleher saving a spot-kick to maintain our lead before the break. Takumi Minamino struck either side of a Divock Origi header. Bells toll again 2011 – Craig Bellamy struck the first goal in his second spell at Anfield as we won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Third Round of the League Cup, also smashing the crossbar with a 35-yard free-kick. A new record attendance of 21,897 at the American Express Community Stadium was set. Dirk Kuyt added a second goal late on, before Ashley Barnes converted a last-minute spot-kick for the home side. Ex-reds reserve Alan Navarro featured for the Seagulls. Other debutants 1935 - Forward Jack Balmer made his first reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 1901 - Left-half George Fleming made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sunderland, with Jack Cox on target. Robbie Fowler also scored. Macca off the mark 1985 - Kenny Dalglish scored at Goodison inside twenty seconds, to become the only ever Player/Manager to net in this fixture. Ian Rush equalled Harry Chambers’ club record for derby strikes with his eighth against the Blues before Steve McMahon nabbed his first reds goal from 25 yards, as we raced into a three-goal half-time lead. Reserve keepers loaned out 1990 - Mike Hooper joined Leicester City on loan. Also on the move 1991 - Ex-red John Wark signed for Ipswich Town for the third time, this time on a free transfer from Middlesbrough. He spent another six seasons at Portman Road, helping them back into the top flight in 1992 and taking his total appearances for the Blues to 678. 2012 - Stephen Warnock joined Bolton Wanderers on loan from Aston Villa, playing fifteen times for the Trotters. 2020 - Mikel San José signed for Birmingham City, playing 28 times before terminating his contract by mutual consent the following May. 2021 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He took them from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season, leading them to 42 wins in 108 games in charge before being sacked in December 2023. He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. Anfield christened 1888 - The first ever League game at Anfield was played as Everton beat Accrington 2-1. On the losing side 1894 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Football League, going down 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in our third First Division game, having remained unbeaten through the whole of our debut season in the Second Division. Happy birthday Mr Kennedy 1951 - Ray Kennedy was born in Seaton Delavel. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games. Robbie arrives 2008 - Robbie Keane signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m. He struck seven times in 28 reds outings before returning to north London for an initial £15m fee the following February. He grabbed fifteen goals in 52 games in his second spell with Spurs before moving on to LA Galaxy for £3.5m in August 2011, while also being loaned out to Celtic and West Ham United. On the same day, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf joined Sunderland from Bolton Wanderers for £2.5m, after a total of 24 goals in 136 games for the Trotters. Razor sheathed 1992 - Ray Houghton was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. In comes Harvey 2019 – Winger Harvey Elliott signed from Fulham for a fee eventually set at an initial £1.2m, having become the youngest ever to play in both the Premier League and League Cup while with the Cottagers. He netted six times in 66 senior appearances across his first four years with the reds, helping us to claim the League Cup and FA Community Shield. 2020 – Northern Irish youngster Conor Bradley signed for the reds as a professional. He has so far made five senior reds appearances, spending a successful 2022/23 season on loan at Bolton Wanderers. 1992 - England international Paul Stewart signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m. That same day he made his reds bow in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Rosenborg BK in Vålerenga. His time at Anfield was a failure, as he scored just three times in 42 appearances in nearly four seasons. He left for Sunderland on a free transfer in March 1996. 1972 – Midfielder Trevor Storton signed from Tranmere Rovers for £25,000, having struck eight times in 118 League games. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester in June 1974, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Shaq off the mark 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri scored in his first reds game as we thumped Manchester United 4-1 in an International Champions Cup game in Michigan, with Sadio Mané and Sheyi Ojo both scoring from the spot and Daniel Sturridge also on target. Four for Fagan 1945 - Willie Fagan scored four times, including two penalties, as we thumped an RAF XI 7-0 in Germany shortly after the end of hostilities. Legendary forward Billy Liddell bagged a brace, with Jack Balmer completing the scoring. Fernando the champion 2002 - Future red Fernando Torres bagged the only goal of the Final of the European Championships for Spain Under-19’s as they beat their German counterparts in Oslo. This was the third consecutive Under-19’s game in which he had scored. Reds firsts 2012 – Fabio Borini played his first reds game in a dour goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore on our North American tour. 2014 – Herbie Kane skippered England Under-17’s while making his debut at this level as they thumped Iceland 5-1 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also featuring. On the same day, future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-19’s in their goalless draw with Portugal in their European Championships Semi-final, with Portugal going through to the Final after a penalty shoot-out. South coast moves 2009 - Peter Crouch joined Tottenham Hotspur from Portsmouth. He had struck sixteen times in 49 outings in this second spell with Pompey. 2006 - David Thompson moved to Fratton Park, having been released by Wigan Athletic at the end of the previous season. He featured just fifteen times for Pompey before moving to Bolton Wanderers the following January. Olympian ends 2008 – Lucas Leiva featured for a Brazil Olympic XI in their 3-0 defeat of a Singapore Select XI in the Stadium of Singapore, in what was the last match before the stadium was demolished later that year. 2021 – Alexis Mac Allister won his ninth and final cap for Argentina Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in the Olympics in Japan, while future red Wataru Endō appeared for the host nation as they beat France 4-0 in Yokohama. On the move again 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Everton from Ipswich Town for £80,000, although he never made the first team before moving on to Luton Town for £150,000 a year later. 2005 - Ex-reserves midfielder Neil Prince signed for Conference North outfit Stalybridge Celtic three years ago, after impressing on a trial. He left in May 2007 after seventeen strikes in 84 appearances. 2010 – Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Ipswich Town for £75,000 from Cardiff City. He had failed to find the net in 79 outings for the Bluebirds. 2011 – Midfielder Momo Sissoko joined Paris Saint-Germain from Juventus for an initial €7m, netting twice in 35 outings, before having his contract terminated in September 2013. 2015 - Spanish forward Dani Pacheco joined Deportivo Alavés on loan from Real Betis Balompié, netting three times in 38 outings as they claimed the Segunda División title. 2017 – Midfielder Adam Phillips signed for Norwich City, having his contract cancelled in February 2019 having failed to make a senior appearance. The start of a dynasty 1974 - Bob Paisley was appointed Manager, a fortnight after Bill Shankly’s resignation. He became Britain’s most successful boss, leading us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five Charity Shields in just nine years in charge. In comes Milan 2001 - Milan Baroš signed from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m, although he was not granted a work permit and allowed to come to Anfield for another five months. He bagged 27 goals in 108 reds games, before moving to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and Worthington Cup. To the World Cup Final 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s 2-1 World Cup Semi-final defeat of Portugal at Wembley. He would shortly become the first red to claim football’s top honour while with the club. Double debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko both made their reds debuts as we won 3-1 at FBK Kaunas in the first leg of our Champions League Second Round qualifier, with Jamie Carragher nabbing his first goal for more than six years! Djibril Cissé also scored with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty. Carra said, “If I'd have known I was going to score against Kaunas I would have worn a t-shirt under my Liverpool shirt with Michael’s name on it. I want to dedicate that goal to Michael Shields and all his family who are suffering so badly right now.” Another win 2020 – We came from a goal down to win 3-1 behind closed doors at Newcastle United to finish the season on a club record 99 points, eighteen points ahead of runners up Manchester City. Dwight Gayle scored after just 25 seconds, the most recent of his five goals past us, but Virgil van Dijk headed up level, with Divock Origi and Sadio Mané both on target after the break. Rafa’s first capture 2004 - Josemi signed from Málaga for £2m, becoming new boss Rafael Benítez’s first signing. He made just 35 reds appearances at right-back before joining Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp in January 2006. Wingers on the move 2006 - Jermaine Pennant signed from Birmingham City for £6.7m. He made 81 appearances, bagging three goals before joining Real Zaragoza in July 2009 after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. On the same day, it was announced that Paul Anderson and Scott Carson had signed new four- and five-year contracts respectively. 2012 - Paul Anderson joined Bristol City from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, scoring three times in 23 games for the Robins before moving to Ipswich Town in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas a year later. Stéph on the move 2005 - Stéphane Henchoz signed for Wigan Athletic. He had made a total of 205 reds appearances, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 and another League Cup two years later. He played 32 times for the Latics before rejoining Blackburn Rovers in September 2006. Birth and death 1928 - Half-back and reds skipper Johnny Wheeler was born in Crosby. He joined his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield when he signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000 in September 1956 and made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. 1963 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie died. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. Justice denied 2000 - The judge in the trial of retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge at Hillsborough, ruled that he should not have to face a retrial, after the jury could not agree on a verdict. Off the mark 2009 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace, his first reds goals, as we thumped a Singapore League Select XI 5-0 in their National Stadium. The other goals came from Andriy Voronin, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres. 2002 - The reds thumped a Swiss XI 5-1 at their pre-season training camp. El-Hadji Diouf and Grégory Vignal both scored their first reds goals, while Neil Mellor netted a brace in his first senior appearance. Milan Baroš added the other. Jari in Amsterdam 2001 - Ex-Ajax star Jari Litmanen struck the only goal of the game for us against Rafael Benítez’s Valencia to send the Amsterdam ArenA crowd wild. It was a brilliant volley after a fifty-yard run and superb cross from Bernard Diomède. Leverkusen for the first time 1991 - We encountered Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the first time, holding them to a goalless draw in their Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion in a pre-season friendly. Spectators were allowed in for free to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bayer company moving to Leverkusen. Off to a bad start 1994 - We kicked off our pre-season campaign by going down 4-1 at First Division Bolton Wanderers, with Ian Rush grabbing our late consolation. Defenders signing on 2021 – Right-back Conor Bradley signed a new contract. He has so far made five senior reds appearances. On the same day, left-back Yasser Larouci joined French side Troyes, after being released by the reds after just two senior outings. 2022 – Left-back Luke Chambers renewed his deal with the reds, making it onto the first-team bench twice in the following campaign. Taking home the bacon 1987 - The reds beat Danish side Aalborg Chang 4-0 in a friendly to celebrate their 75th anniversary. John Aldridge grabbed a brace, including one from the spot, while John Barnes netted for the second consecutive game. The scoring was completed by Ronnie Whelan. Mohamed Salah equalised a minute after Leroy Sané had given City the lead, with Sadio Mané converting an injury time penalty to hand us victory. We have twice faced Linfield at Windsor Park on this day in history. 1969 - Emlyn Hughes and Ron Yeats netted as we won 2-1. 1997 - We won by the same score, with Michael Owen grabbing a brace. 1992 - Dean Saunders was on target from the spot as we lost 2-1 to AS Monaco in the Tournoi de Paris at the Parc des Princes. Keepers moving 2006 - Sander Westerveld returned to Spain to join UD Almería, after brief spells back in England with Portsmouth and Everton. He made 33 League appearances in his one season there, as they gained promotion to the top flight. On the same day, former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Halifax Town. 2008 - Brad Friedel joined Aston Villa from Blackburn Rovers, after 356 games for the Ewood Park outfit. He played 131 times for the Villains before moving to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in June 2011. Off on loan again 2004 - Alou Diarra joined Racing Club de Lens on loan, having spent the previous two seasons with Le Havre AC and Bastia. He joined Lens permanently in June 2005 after netting twice in 34 League games during his loan spell. 2017 - Young Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella joined Willem II on loan, failing to score in 35 outings for the Dutch side. Alberto the champion 2003 – Alberto Aquilani won his sixteenth and last cap for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Portugal 2-0 to clinch the European Championships at this level in Liechtenstein. 2005 – Future red David Martin was in goal as England Under-19’s beat Serbia & Montenegro 3-1 in Northern Ireland to reach the Final of the same competition. 2006 - Reds right-back Antonio Barragán played as Spain Under-19’s thumped Austria 5-0 in Poland to reach the Final of the European Championships. 2018 – Adam Lewis played his sixth and last game for England Under-19’s in their 3-0 defeat by Norway in the European Championships Finals in Finland. 2002 - John Welsh, Jon Otsemobor and future reds Glen Johnson represented England Under-19’s as they lost 3-2 to Republic of Ireland in a European Championship Finals group game in Norway, who included Michael Foley-Sheridan, while future red Jermaine Pennant won his fifth and final cap at this level. Also on the move 1997 – Robbie Keane signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He grabbed 29 goals in 88 outings before moving to Coventry City for £6m in August 1999. 1996 - Gary McAllister joined Coventry City from Leeds United in a £3m deal. He spent four years at Highfield Road before his shock move to the reds, netting 26 times in 150 appearances. 1963 - Tony Hateley moved to Aston Villa for £22,000 from Notts County, netting 86 times in 148 games before moving to Chelsea for £100,000 in October 1966, from where he joined the reds. 1982 - Paul Walsh joined Luton Town from Charlton Athletic for £400,000. He struck 28 times in 89 games in his two years with the Hatters as they struggled in the top flight, before moving to Anfield in May 1984 for £700,000. 2007 - Don Hutchison signed for Luton Town, having been released by Coventry City the month before. He bagged just one goal in 26 outings for the Hatters. Olympian reds 2012 – Craig Bellamy netted for Great Britain as they drew 1-1 with Senegal in a group game at the Olympics at Old Trafford, with future reds Joe Allen, Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané and Daniel Sturridge also in action. Later that day in the same stadium, Luis Suárez skippered Uruguay to a 2-1 defeat of the United Arab Emirates, with Sebastián Coates also featuring. Happy birthdays 1938 - Legendary centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958. His 245 League goals remain a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. 1966 - Hunt bagged both goals as England beat France 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game at Wembley, on his 28th birthday. Clubmate Ian Callaghan also played, winning only his second cap. 1948 - Reserves keeper Frank Lane was born in Wallasey. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. New signings 2005 - Peter Crouch signed from Southampton for £7m on a four-year contract. He failed to score in his first nineteen reds games, but went on to bag thirteen goals in his final thirty games of his first season, helping us to claim the FA Cup in May. He went on to score 42 times in 134 outings in total before being sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2016 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed from Augsburg for £4.2m. He struck twice in 53 outings before moving on to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. On the same day, keeper Ádám Bogdán joined Wigan Athletic on loan, playing seventeen times as the Latics were relegated to League One. Keeping no more 2007 - Jerzy Dudek signed for Real Madrid after 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He turned out just twelve times for the Spanish giants before retiring in May 2011. 2018 - Danny Ward was sold to Leicester City for £12.5m after just three senior reds games. He has so only played fourteen times in cup competitions for the Foxes across his first four campaigns. Back amongst the big boys 2001 - We were drawn to play either Haka of Finland or Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in a two-legged Champions League qualifier, which would be our first ever games in the new format of the European Cup. He usurped Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years, and went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, a League Cup and a UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000 in August 1981. Souey departs 1984 - Graeme Souness left for Sampdoria in Italy for a £650,000 fee. He had been a dominant presence in our midfield on 359 occasions, netting 55 times as we won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1959 – Scottish keeper Tommy Younger left the reds to sign for Falkirk. His transfer had been heavily trailed for at least six months, and Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, eventually moving on to Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. In comes Jordan 2011 – Midfielder Jordan Henderson signed from Sunderland for £16m. He has notched 33 times in 492 reds games by the time he turned 33, becoming club captain and helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. Births and death 1954 - Forward Alan Waddle was born in Wallsend. He signed from Halifax Town for £40,000 in June 1973 but only made 22 appearances in his four years at Anfield, netting just once, at Goodison Park in December 1973, as his route to the first team was usually blocked by Kevin Keegan and John Toshack, although he was on the bench for the European Cup Final in 1977. He moved on to Leicester City that September. His cousin Chris went on to great things with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique de Marseille and England. 1979 - Late-1990’s reserves winger Nicky Rizzo was born in Sydney. He never made a senior reds appearance, and moved on to Crystal Palace and then lower League football in Italy, but is now back in his homeland running his own soccer school. 1947 – Wing-half Charlie Wilson died. He signed from Stockport County on a free transfer in December 1897, bagging three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. Reds honoured 2003 - Gérard Houllier was awarded an Honorary OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. On the same day, agreement was reached to sign Steve Finnan from Fulham for £3.5m. He joined us for a then-record fee of £900,000 from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1981, going on to make 356 appearances, netting eighteen times while helping us to win four League titles, one European Cup, one FA Cup, three League Cups, the FA Charity Shield and Screen Sport Super Cup in his time at Anfield, before taking over as Oxford United boss in March 1988. 1964 - Mark Everton Walters was born in Birmingham. The most famous of his 124 games in a red shirt came when he inspired a UEFA Cup comeback against Auxerre in 1991, as he remained on the bench for both the 1992 FA Cup Final and League Cup Final in 1995. He also scored the crucial second goal in our defeat of Manchester United that handed the title to Leeds United in April 1992, one of his nineteen reds strikes after signing from Rangers for £1.25m in August 1991. Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kennedy stepped up to take the decisive spot kick, as we won the big cup right in the heart of the lions’ den. Phil Neal, Graeme Souness, in his 359th and final reds appearance, and Ian Rush had been our other successful penalty takers. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Wembley glory 1983 - We won our third consecutive League Cup, 2-1. Norman Whiteside opened the scoring for Manchester United with the first of his four goals past us before Alan Kennedy equalised at Wembley. The game went into extra time, with our fitness proving the greater as Frank Stapleton had to come back into defence with Gordon McQueen going up front, due to cramp. Ronnie Whelan, who had scored twice in the previous season’s Final, won the game for us with a beautifully curled shot past the helpless Gary Bailey. Bob Paisley was sent up to lift the trophy in his final season as boss. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Fellow future red Peter Beardsley also played. Jan Mølby also turned out for his homeland that day, as Denmark held Northern Ireland to a 1-1 draw in another friendly, at Windsor Park. 1988 - Kenny secured another century when he led the reds to his hundredth victory as Manager, with John Aldridge and John Barnes striking in a 2-1 League defeat of Wimbledon at Anfield. This was Digger’s hundredth club goal, while Gary Gillespie reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Dalglish came on as a very late replacement for Aldridge, with Eric Young bagging the visitors’ consolation straight after that. Signing on 1898 – Inside-left Hugh Morgan signed from St. Mirren for £200. He struck seventeen times in 68 reds games, top scoring in his first full season at Anfield. He also won a second Scotland cap while on our books before joining Blackburn Rovers in June 1900. 1928 – Forward Billy Millar arrived from Linfield for £1,150. He scored twice in three games before moving on to Barrow in January 1930. Happy birthday Jerzy 1973 - Jerzy Dudek was born in Rybnik. The big Pole in our goal made 186 reds appearances after signing from Feyenoord for £4.85m in August 2001, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He left to join Real Madrid in July 2007, although he barely featured for their first team. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh took charge of his first reds game as Jack Haigh nabbed the only goal of our top-flight meeting with Charlton Athletic at Anfield. Left-back Eddie Spicer reached a century of League appearances in this game. Away goals galore 1985 - John Wark netted an eighteen-minute hat-trick in our 5-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, with Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish also on target, while Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Derek Statham penalty. Michael Owen, Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard all netted in a 3-1 win, with Mark Viduka bagging one of his six goals past us. Other births and deaths 1983 - Former reserves right-back Jon Otsemobor was born in Speke, Liverpool. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday but played just six first-team games for us, before joining Rotherham United in July 2005. 1914 - Centre-half Norman Low was born in Aberdeen. He joined the reds in October 1933 but only played thirteen times while at Anfield, deputising for Tom Bradshaw, before moving on to Newport County in November 1936. 1908 – John Charlton was born in Leadgate, County Durham. He signed from Bradford City in October 1929, but only played three senior games before moving on to Derry City in 1932. 1947 – David Ashworth died. He was appointed as reds boss in December 1919. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 2011 – Ex-reds midfielder Trevor Storton died. He struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Double departure 1897 – Forward Malcolm McVean and inside-right Jimmy Ross were both sold to Burnley, although the Clarets got relegated at the end of that campaign. McVean had signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scoring our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. He helped us to the Lancashire League title and two Second Division championships. Ross was known as the ‘little demon’, signing from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side. International doubles 1994 - Future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer both won their first full international caps for the Republic of Ireland in their goalless friendly meeting with Russia at Lansdowne Road. Ronnie Whelan skippered the Irish that day, while future red Gary McAllister captained Scotland on the same day, as they lost a friendly 1-0 to the Netherlands at Hampden Park. He was then signed by Jan Mølby for Kidderminster Harriers. Alf’s last strike 1968 - Centre-forward Alf Arrowsmith struck his final reds goal as we won 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. He was released for the second time in June 2012. Jocky on the off 1977 - Alan Hansen made his reds debut as we beat Derby County 1-0 at Anfield, with Terry McDermott on the scoresheet. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored his 21st goal in European competition, a new club record, to hand us a 1-1 draw at Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. Most recently 2020 – Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Rhys Williams all made their reds bows as we thumped Lincoln City 7-2 in a League Cup Third Round tie behind closed doors at the LNER Stadium. Kelso sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris scored his first reds goal as we drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Billy Liddell also on target. Other birthdays 1949 - Former forward, and coach under Graeme Souness, Phil Boersma was born in Kirkby. He signed professional terms in September 1968 and struck thirty times in 120 reds games, although he struggled to get picked in front of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Bobby Graham netted our other goal, while Neil Young scored the last of his four goals past us. Ian Bowyer and Mike Doyle also struck for the home side. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. Beating the Blues 1898 - Andrew McCowie bagged a brace, including a penalty, as we won 2-1 at Goodison Park. This was our first ever win across Stanley Park. Harkness on loan 1993 - Steve Harkness joined Second Division Huddersfield Town on loan. He made five appearances for the Terriers before returning to Anfield. 1987 - Reserves midfielder Ken DeMange joined Leeds United. He had never made a senior appearance while on our books, despite winning full international honours during that time. Double debutants 1924 – Future reds Gordon Hodgson and Arthur Riley won their first caps for South Africa as they beat Ireland 2-1 in Belfast. More first and last caps 1991 – Bjorn Tore Kvarme debuted for Norway Under-21’s in their 2-0 friendly win in Denmark, with fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also in action. 2001 - Robbie Foy won his first cap at Under-17’s level in Scotland’s 2-0 friendly win over Wales in Rhyl. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina Under-17’s beat Mali 2-1 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals of the World Championships Finals in Trinidad & Tobago. 2007 – Future reds centre-back Danny Wilson won his fourth and final cap for Scotland Under-17’s as they thumped Belarus 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Cumbernauld. 2022 – Lee Jonas and Isaac Mabaya both debuted for England Under-19’s, with Oakley Cannonier bagging his first two goals at this level as they thumped Georgia 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. Diogo Jota scored as Portugal won a UEFA Nations League group game 4-0 in the Czech Republic, while Sadio Mané netted from the spot for Senegal while playing for the first time since joining Bayern München in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Bolivia in France. Steven Caulker captained Sierra Leone to a 4-0 friendly defeat in South Africa, his first game for them as a Fatih Karagümrük player. Also in international action were James Balagizi, Conor Bradley, Luke Chambers, Melkamu Frauendorf, Kostas Tsimikas and ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland. Joey the boss 2001 - Joey Jones was appointed Caretaker Manager of Wrexham, following the departure of Bryan Flynn. He was only in charge for two games, both of which they lost, before ex-Oxford United boss Denis Smith took over. Neil Martin bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with George Herd netting a late equaliser. 1960 – We won 3-1 at Leyton Orient in a Second Division encounter thanks to goals from Dave Hickson, Alan A’Court and Johnny Morrissey. 1955 – Billy Liddell was on target as Middlesbrough held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. 1938 – We beat Leeds United 3-0 at home with Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Phil Taylor all on the scoresheet. 1932 – We lost 1-0 to Bolton Wanderers in L4 with Ray Westwood scoring one of his nine goals past us. 1927 – Dick Edmed struck as we lost 3-1 at West Ham United. Jimmy Ruffell and Stan Earle each bagged the first of their four goals against us, with William Gibbins also on target.
