Happy birthday Brucie 1957 - Bruce Grobbelaar was born in Durban, South Africa. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime, and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1988 - Right-back and former reserves skipper Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool. He made the move to Melwood in the summer of 2006 after skippering the reds to FA Youth Cup glory earlier that year, also featuring as they retained the trophy the following year. He made six senior appearances as well as sitting on the bench on a further thirteen occasions, moving on to Bradford City in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. He retired from professional football in September 2018 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. 1940 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in May 1958 but only made one first-team appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1959, and moved on to Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to make a total of over 400 League appearances for a variety of clubs. Twelve in a row 1990 - We won our twelfth successive League match, a new club record, as Derby County went down 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Ray Houghton strike and a penalty from Peter Beardsley past Peter Shilton. Unfortunately, this run came to an end in our next game, as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City a fortnight later. Being sold 2010 – The club announced that the Board had agreed the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. Eventually, the deal went through after a series of delaying tactics by George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. Double capture 1966 – Full-back Stuart Mason and left-back Peter Wall signed from Wrexham for a combined £35,000. Mason never made the first team, while Wall failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. 1950 – Outside-right Don Woan signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. A baptism of fire 1991 - Rob Jones made his reds bow, just two days after signing from Crewe Alexandra. It was a real baptism of fire, as he helped us to claim a goalless draw at Manchester United. Gary Ablett and United’s Mark Hughes were both dismissed. King Kenny on top 2006 - Kenny Dalglish came out on top in the club official website’s first 100 Players Who Shook The Kop poll, finishing ahead of Steven Gerrard, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes. The votes were cast by over 110,000 fans across the summer. Bosses in and out 2001 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Saint-Étienne. He had been in the side when we famously saw off Les Verts in 1977, but only lasted three months at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard before quitting. 2006 - Ex-reserves forward John Durnin resigned as a Coach at Southport, apparently due to other coaching and playing commitments. 2008 – Another former second-string striker, Mike Newell, was named as Grimsby Town boss, leading them to 22nd in League Two at the end of his first season. Firsts and last 1900 - Inside-left Andy McGuigan made his reds bow in our 3-2 win at Derby County, when Tom Robertson struck a brace, with inside-right Johnny Walker also on the scoresheet. John Boag struck the last of his six goals past us, with Archie Goodall converting a spot-kick. 1906 – Inside-left Bill McPherson scored on his reds debut as we lost 2-1 at Woolwich Arsenal’s Manor Ground in another First Division fixture. David Neave bagged the first two of his four goals against the reds. 1970 – Midfielder Doug Livermore played his eighteenth and last reds game as we lost a League Cup Third Round tie 2-0 at Swindon Town, with Don Rodgers bagging a quick-fire brace for the Robins. Wadsworth passes on 1951 - Centre-half Walter Wadsworth died. He scored eight times in 242 reds games, many alongside his brother, outside-right Harold. He had signed on from Ormskirk as an amateur in April 1912 and remained with the club for fourteen years, interrupted by the First World War, helping us to two consecutive League titles in the 1920’s before joining Bristol City in May 1926. Mixed derby fortunes 1917 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored all the goals in a Wartime League derby at Anfield as we won 4-0. 1923 - We lost 1-0 at Goodison Park in a top-flight match, with Wilf Chadwick on target. Mixed fortunes against Rovers 1956 - We lost 3-2 at home to Blackburn Rovers in a Second Division fixture, with Eric Anderson bagging his 22nd and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell also on target. Roy Vernon netted the first of his six strikes past us, with Eddie Crossan and Bryan Douglas also scoring. 1987 - We won a League Cup tie at Anfield with John Aldridge heading the only goal of the game very late on to take us through to the Third Round 2-1 on aggregate as John Wark appeared for the 108th and final time. 1938 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round Replay, with Ron Jones and George Paterson scoring. Other big wins 1979 - We beat Bristol City 4-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match with David Johnson, Kenny Dalglish, Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott all on the scoresheet. 1992 - Don Hutchison, Jamie Redknapp, Mark Walters and Ian Rush all struck as we came behind to finally see off Third Division Chesterfield 4-1 in the League Cup Second Round at Saltergate, having drawn the home leg 4-4. 1945 - Jack Balmer nabbed a brace with Harold Kaye and Billy Liddell also on target as we beat Bradford City 4-1 in a Wartime League match in L4. First and lasts against the Blades 1894 - Forward Albert Worgan played his second and final reds game as we were held to a 2-2 draw by Sheffield United at Anfield in a top-flight fixture. Outside-right Neil Kerr struck the first of his three reds goals with Harry Bradshaw also on target. Defender James Cameron made the first of his four appearances for the club in this game. Internationals on target 2016 – Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both struck as Brazil thumped Bolivia 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Natal, with this being Firmino’s first goal as a reds player. Meanwhile, Joe Allen scored his first goal since moving to Stoke City as Wales held Austria to a 2-2 draw in Vienna, with future red Diogo Jota scoring his first goal for Portugal Under-21’s as they drew a European Championships qualifying draw in Hungary. Caoimhín Kelleher, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Alisson Becker and Kostas Tsimikas, and ex-reds Sebastián Coates, Brad Smith and Luis Suárez also featured for their countries. 2017 – Joe Allen struck for Wales again as they won a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Georgia, with Ben Woodburn also featuring. Dominic Solanke bagged his first goal for England Under-21’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland at the Riverside Stadium, with Joe Gomez winning his seventh and last cap at this level and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in action. Future red Thiago Alcântara scored his first goal for Spain as they beat Albania 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alicante. On the same day, ex-red Nuri Şahin won his last cap in his second spell as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player, as Turkey were beaten 3-0 at home by Iceland in a World Cup qualifier, with Marko Grujić and future reds Wataru Endō and Ozan Kabak also representing their countries. Aiming for the Far East 2001 - A host of reds played in World Cup qualifiers around Europe. Future red Milan Baroš was on target in the Czech Republic’s 6-0 thumping of Bulgaria in Prague, with Vladimír Šmicer coming on as a substitute to win his fiftieth cap. Ex-red Jim Magilton also reached his half century as Northern Ireland won 1-0 in Malta. Nick Barmby made his 23rd and last appearance for England, with Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey also starting as their 2-2 draw with Greece at Old Trafford took them through to the finals. Steve McManaman came off the bench to claim his 37th, and also final, cap. In the same group, Sami Hyypiä and Jari Litmanen were both in the Finnish side that held Germany to a goalless draw in Gelsenkirchen that ensured the Germans had to negotiate a play-off. Ex-red Christian Ziege appeared for the Germans. Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-reds Don Hutchison, Mark Kennedy and Steve Staunton, and future reds Craig Bellamy, Steve Finnan, Paul Jones and Bolo Zenden all also represented their countries on that day. H & H in opposition 1996 - Future reds centre-back pairing Stéphane Henchoz and Sami Hyypiä faced each other in a World Cup qualifier in Helsinki, with Switzerland beating Finland 3-2. More reds games 2002 – Michael Owen netted the only goal of Chelsea’s visit to Anfield late on. 1984 – West Bromwich Albion held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1973 – We beat Newcastle United 2-1 at home. Peter Cormack struck before Alec Lindsay converted a penalty. 1962 – Roger Hunt nabbed the only goal as Bolton Wanderers visited Anfield. 1951 – We lost 2-0 at Charlton Athletic. Billy Kiernan scored one of his five goals against the reds before future red John Evans bagged the first of his five past us. 1934 – Gordon Hodgson struck our consolation as we lost 4-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Ellis Rimmer netting the last of his five and Mark Hooper scoring the final two of his eight. 1928 – Jimmy McDougall was on target as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United as Stan Earle equalised with one of his four goals past us. Off on loan 2020 – Serbian midfielder Marko Grujić joined Porto on loan, netting twice in 36 appearances before signing on permanently for £10.5m in July 2021. On the same day, Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo moved to Salamanca Club de Fútbol UDS in Spain for the season, playing 21 times. Mixed fortunes for the youngsters 2000 - Stephen Wright was sent off for England Under-21’s in their 1-1 draw with Germany at Pride Park in a European Championships qualifier. 2006 – Scott Carson and future red James Milner featured as England Under-21’s beat Germany 1-0 in the first leg of their European Championships Play-off in Coventry. 2009 – Hungary Under-20’s beat their Czech Republic counterparts 4-3 on penalties after their World Championship Finals Round of 16 match in Egypt had ended 2-2. Péter Gulácsi saved three spot-kicks in the shoot-out, with Krisztián Németh’s effort being saved. 2021 - Jakub Ojrzyński featured for Poland Under-19’s as they lost 3-1 to Finland in a European Championships qualifier in Grodzisk Wielkopolski. 2015 – Trent Alexander-Arnold played for England Under-17’s in their 8-0 friendly thumping of DR Congo in Burton, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2011 – Jon Flanagan, Jordan Henderson, Martin Kelly, Dani Pacheco, Danny Wilson and future red Fabio Borini were all on the winning side for their respective Under-21’s in European Championships qualifiers, with Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bagging a treble, his first goals at this level as Pacheco won his second and last Under-21’s cap and Borini dismissed. 2007 – Pacheco also played for Spain Under-17’s as they drew a European Championships qualifier 2-2 in Wales.

Another derby victory 2008 – A Fernando Torres brace after an hour of our trip to Goodison Park resulted in a 2-0 win, with a third goal harshly ruled out for an alleged foul by Dirk Kuyt. Tim Cahill was sent off late on for a challenge on Xabi Alonso. 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield as Steven Gerrard scored in the League for the sixteenth consecutive season, a new club record. Phil Jagielka equalised for the visitors with a wonder strike from distance in stoppage time. Three off in the derby 1999 - Sander Westerveld, Steven Gerrard and Everton’s Francis Jeffers were all sent off in our 1-0 derby defeat at Anfield. Steve Staunton went in goal for the final minutes, keeping a clean sheet and saving from future red Abel Xavier. Kevin Campbell netted the only goal of the game in the fourth minute, one of his four goals against us. Losing the European Cup 1978 - We lost our grip on the European Cup, being held to a goalless draw at Anfield by League champions Nottingham Forest, with ex-red Larry Lloyd dominant in the visitors’ defence. That was enough to take them through, as they had won the first leg 2-0 at the City Ground. Forest went on to claim the trophy that season, and then retain it the following year. 1924 - We also faced them in a First Division fixture at Anfield. Archie Rawlings struck his first two reds goals as we won 3-0, with Danny Shone also on the scoresheet. Sir Roger passes on 2021 – Legendary centre-forward Roger Hunt died. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958, with his 245 League goals still a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. Another Istanbul comeback 2006 - We raced into a 3-0 lead against Galatasaray in our UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield, thanks to a goal from Luis García surrounded by a stunning Peter Crouch brace that included an overhead bicycle kick. However, Ümit Karan struck two goals after the break, although we held on to triumph 3-2. Other derby encounters We have travelled across the park on three other occasions on this day in history. 1975 – We held the Blues to a goalless draw. 1947 - We won 3-0 with Jack Balmer, Albert Stubbins and Willie Fagan grabbing our goals. 1902 - We lost 3-1, with Sam Raybould netting our consolation from the spot as Tom Watson took charge of his 200th reds League game. Bobby Graham scored in the first half, with ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netting a late equaliser after the Baggies had taken the lead through one of Jeff Astle’s seven strikes past the reds, and Danny Hegan. We have faced the Baggies in the First Division on two other occasions on this day in history, without hitting the target. 1913 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield, with half-back Ralph Holden playing his second and final reds game. 1952 - We lost 3-0 at The Hawthorns. Frank Griffin bagged two of his six strikes against the reds, with Ronnie Allen also on the scoresheet with one of his five goals past us. Nice one Cyril 1941 - Cyril Done grabbed four goals as we thumped New Brighton 7-2 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Willie Fagan netted a brace, with Billy Liddell completing the scoring. The gems make the final 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec scored for the French Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of Argentina in the World Championships Semi-final in Trinidad. Club-mate Florent Sinama-Pongolle also played, the only game of this tournament in which he failed to hit the target. Future red Javier Mascherano was on the losing side. 2022 – Takumi Minamino won his first cap since moving to AS Monaco as Japan were held to a goalless draw by Ecuador in Düsseldorf, with future red Wataru Endō also featuring. Meanwhile, ex-red Rhian Brewster won his eighteenth and last cap for England Under-21’s as they beat Germany 3-1 in a friendly at Bramall Lane, with Harvey Elliott also in action. 2018 - Ki-Jana Hoever nabbed a brace, his first goals for the Dutch Under-17’s, as they trounced Liechtenstein 10-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Sweden. 2014 – Keeper Caoimhín Kelleher debuted for the Irish Under-17’s in their goalless draw with Scotland in another qualifier in Longford. Births and death 1999 – Canadian forward Liam Millar was born in Toronto. He left Fulham to join the reds in July 2016 and is currently in his second loan spell with Kilmarnock. On the same day, Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo was born in Quibdó. He joined the reds in February 2018, so far spending all of his time out on loan. 1987 – Hungarian keeper Ádám Bogdán was born in Budapest. He arrived on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers in July 2015, making six senior appearances but spending much of his time out on loan, finally being released at the end of last season. 1918 - Left-half Joe Dines died in First World War action in France. He won Olympic Gold in 1912 before giving up his teaching job and signing on at Anfield. However, he only made one senior reds appearance before the war intervened. In comes Tom 1899 – Defender Thomas Hunter signed from Scottish side Beith. He only made four senior appearances for the club, moving on to Preston North End in May 1902. Lawro on the receiving end 1980 - Mark Lawrenson and Michael Robinson both featured for the visitors as we saw off a stubborn Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield. Graeme Souness bagged a brace as we eventually won 4-1, with Terry McDermott and David Fairclough also netting, and Brian Horton on target for the Seagulls. 1986 – Lawrenson played his 200th League game for the reds as Aston Villa held us to a 3-3 draw at Anfield. Steve Hodge scored one of his goals against us early on, before John Wark equalised from the spot. Garry Thompson restored the visitors’ lead after a Bruce Grobbelaar fumble, but Wark drew us level again before the break. Allan Evans converted a penalty to again put the Villains in front, but former Villa player Steve McMahon struck our third leveller. Rushie off the mark in Italy 1987 - Ex-red Ian Rush scored his first two official goals for Juventus as they beat Pescara 3-1 at the Stadio Comunale. Red centuries 1919 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell played his hundredth League game for the reds as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Newcastle United. Fred Pagnam struck our goal, his thirtieth and last for the club. 1967 – We lost 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers in our League Cup Second Round replay as Ian Callaghan added to a Tommy Smith penalty. Gordon Taylor struck the first two of his four goals against the reds, with Frederick Hill also scoring. This was Phil Taylor’s hundredth game in charge of the reds. Harkness on the move 2000 - Steve Harkness left Blackburn Rovers for Sheffield Wednesday for £200,000. He went on to make 32 appearances in two seasons with the Owls before signing for Conference side Chester City on a free transfer. World stars 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals in Egypt as they lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Nemeth and András Simon all featured in Hungary’s 3-0 defeat by Honduras in the same competition. A friendly trip to Sweden 1977 - We played IFK Göteborg in a friendly with David Fairclough adding a brace to a strike from Jimmy Case in our 3-2 win. For Tom 1920 – A benefit game was staged for inside-right Tom Bennett against an International XI at Anfield. He had struck 77 times in seventy wartime games, but only made one first-class appearance before ill health forced his early retirement. He sadly died from tuberculosis in January 1923, aged just 31. Other reds games 1997 – Robbie Fowler was on target as we lost 2-1 at West Ham United. 1958 – We lost a Second Division match 2-1 to Cardiff City at Anfield, with Alan Banks putting us in front. Joe Bonson levelled with one of his five goals past us, before Ron Hewitt nabbed the winner. Also in international action 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first goal as a reds player as Uruguay beat Canada 2-0 in a friendly in Slovakia, with Isaac Mabaya winning his second and last cap for England Under-19’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 4-2 in Denmark, with Luke Chambers and Lee Jonas also featuring. Also in action were James Balagizi, Owen Beck, Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Luis Díaz, Melkamu Frauendorf, Diogo Jota, Isaac Mabaya, Kostas Tsimikas, ex-reds Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané, Xherdan Shaqiri and Luis Suárez, and future reds Alexis Mac Allister, with Steve Clarke and Rigobert Song both taking charge of their countries. 1988 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-21’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in France. Welcome cobber 2003 - Harry Kewell signed from Leeds United for £5m on a five-year deal. It was also announced that he would be taking over the famous number seven shirt, with Vladimír Šmicer switching to eleven. Harry’s time at Anfield was disappointing as he suffered from a series of niggling injuries, bagging sixteen goals in 139 reds games before leaving as his contract expired. However, he did help us to claim the Champions League and FA Cup in his time as a red, although he limped out of both Finals. Farewell King Billy 2001 - The funeral of Billy Liddell was held. King Billy was a genuine reds legend, arriving at Anfield in July 1938 while still only sixteen. He left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games, and brightened the lean Second Division years for Kopites. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1939 – Welsh international half-back George Latham died. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. A great day for Ged 1992 - Gérard Houllier was appointed Manager of France. He was in charge for just fifteen months, winning seven of his twelve games in command, although the French narrowly missed out on qualifying for the World Cup in the USA. 2003 - He was presented with his Honorary OBE in London by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, alongside his good friend Arsène Wenger. In and out 2007 - Two new members of staff at the Academy started their jobs. Technical Manager Piet Hamberg had arrived from Grasshoppers of Zurich and Recruitment Manager Paul Johnson came from Blackburn Rovers, though both have already left. Meanwhile, Djibril Cissé was sold to Olympique de Marseille for £6.3m, after a season there on loan. He had bagged 24 goals in 79 reds games since his club record £14m capture from Auxerre, scoring to help us to claim three trophies in his time at Anfield. Debuting in Wales 2005 - Pepe Reina and Bolo Zenden both played their first reds games as we won our opening pre-season friendly 4-3 at Wrexham. Fernando Morientes and Milan Baroš grabbed a brace each. Battling for the Final 2014 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum and ex-reds Dirk Kuyt, Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodríguez faced off in the World Cup Semi-final in São Paulo. The game ended goalless, with Argentina eventually beating the Netherlands 4-2 on penalties. They went on to lose the Final to Germany. In comes Diarra 2002 - Young French midfielder Alou Diarra signed for five years from Bayern München on a free transfer. He spent all his time as a red on loan away from Anfield, first at Le Havre, then Bastia, and finally with Racing Club de Lens whom he joined permanently for £2m in June 2005. 2006 - He reached the pinnacle of his career, making a substitute appearance in the World Cup Final as France lost out to Italy on penalties in Berlin. Heading off 2019 – Alberto Moreno signed for Villarreal, having been released by the reds after netting three times in 141 reds games since signing for £12m from his hometown club Sevilla in August 2014. On the same day, ex-red Xabi Alonso started work as head coach for Real Sociedad’s B-team. 2009 - Jermaine Pennant signed for Real Zaragoza after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. He had arrived at Anfield in July 2006 for £6.7m after Birmingham City were relegated, hitting the target just three times in 81 reds games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in his first season. 1902 – Scottish inside-left Bill White left the reds to sign for Dundee. He had signed from West Calder in 1901, scoring his only reds goal after just two minutes of his debut in the Anfield derby in September of that year. He made just five more senior reds appearances. Martin’s bow 2004 - Future red Martin Škrtel won his first senior international cap as Slovakia lost 3-1 to host nation Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup in Hiroshima. Finishing third 2021 – Future red Luis Díaz bagged a brace as Colombia beat Peru 3-2 in their Copa América third place play-off in Brasilia. New deals 2021 – Harvey Elliott signed a new contract, having signed from Fulham for an initial £1.2m in July 2019. On the same day, Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo joined Club Deportivo Mirandés on loan, making 31 senior appearances. 2020 – Czech keeper Vítezslav Jaroš signed a new contract. He arrived from SK Slavia Praha in 2017 and played as we won the FA Youth Cup in 2019. He has so far made it to the first-team bench on four occasions. 2004 - Darren Potter signed a new three-year contract. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. Beating the Blues 1898 - Andrew McCowie bagged a brace, including a penalty, as we won 2-1 at Goodison Park. This was our first ever win across Stanley Park. Harkness on loan 1993 - Steve Harkness joined Second Division Huddersfield Town on loan.
