Future reds boss Don Welsh netted for the visitors, having previously done so against us before the Second World War! 1907 - Harold Fitzpatrick scored on his reds debut to hand us a 1-0 home victory over Sunderland in another top-flight encounter as outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 200th reds game, while left-half Samuel Hignett made his only senior appearance for the club. Fastest treble 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history, taking just six minutes and twelve seconds to net three times in our groups stage game at Rangers. Scott Arfield gave the home side the lead, but we romped home as 7-1 winners with Roberto Firmino netting either side of the break before Darwin Núñez scored. Salah then arrived from the bench to grab his treble, with Harvey Elliott completing the scoring. Another record for Michael 2002 - Michael Owen scored his nineteenth England goal, more than any other red in history until it was equalled by Steven Gerrard in August 2010, in his 43rd game as they beat Slovakia 2-1 in their Euro 2004 qualifier in Bratislava. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä netted in Finland’s 3-0 defeat of Azerbaijan in Helsinki, playing alongside ex-red Jari Litmanen who was winning his eightieth cap. Meanwhile, Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both won their first caps as reds players as Senegal drew 2-2 with Nigeria in a Joola Disaster Charity Match in Dakar. Bruno Cheyrou, Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen and future reds Yossi Benayoun, Alex Manninger, Fernando Morientes and Christian Poulsen all also played in internationals that day. Fagan later admitted that it was his “daftest decision” as reds boss. Europe’s best 1978 – The reds were named as European team of the year at a ceremony in Paris, having retained the European Cup at Wembley earlier that year. Reds come into the world 1867 - Right-half Rab Howell was born in Sheffield. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring after signing from Sheffield United for £200 in April 1898. He left for Preston North End in June 1901. 1897 - Forward Sam Bowyer was born in Northwich. He signed from Earlestown in March 1907, grabbing sixteen goals in 48 reds games before leaving for Bedminster in 1912. 1987 - Former reserves attacking midfielder Besian Idrizaj was born in Baden in Austria. He was actually a Kosovan-Albanian and was voted the best young player in the Austrian equivalent of the Championship shortly before moving to England. He signed from Linzer ASK for an initial £190,000 in August 2005 and made his first senior appearance in our friendly at Crewe Alexandra back in July 2006, netting a treble at Wrexham a year later, but failed to make the first-team squad, sadly dying aged just 22 in May 2010. Sammy the champion 1982 - Sammy Lee skippered England Under-21’s as they lost 3-2 to West Germany in Bremen in the second leg of the Final of the European Championships. However, their first leg lead was enough to hand them the title, 5-4 on aggregate. Future red David Hodgson also played. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We have faced Manchester United three times on this day in history. 1996 - David Beckham netted the only goal of the game at Old Trafford. 1968 - We beat the European Champions 2-0 at Anfield when Ian St. John and Alun Evans struck. 1895 - We thumped Newton Heath as they were then known 7-1 at home, with two apiece from Frank Becton, Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw and Fred Geary, and a goal from Jimmy Ross. Into Romania 1966 – Half-back Willie Stevenson put through his own net while playing his 200th red game to start the scoring as we lost 3-1 in Romania to Petrolul Ploieşti in the second leg of our European Cup First Round tie. Roger Hunt grabbed our goal, with home defender Gheorghe Florea sent off late on in a bruising encounter. The tie ended level at 3-3 on aggregate and, as this was before the away goals rule, a third game was needed, which we won in Brussels a week later. Bill’s treble 1938 – Forward Bill Kinghorn scored a hat-trick as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 6-1 in the second replay of our Lancashire Senior Cup First Round tie. John Browning bagged a brace, with Ted Harston also netting. Saints beaten 1985 - Steve McMahon scored the only goal of the game as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield. Six Saints were booked, including ex-red Jimmy Case and future red Mark Wright. Derby despair 1918 - We lost a Wartime League fixture 4-2 at Goodison with our goals coming from Thomas Green and a Billy Wareing own goal. Kenny in charge again 1991 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Manager of Blackburn Rovers. He led them to their first League title in 81 years in 1995, before moving upstairs. Salif departs 2006 - Salif Diao joined Stoke City on loan. He turned out seventeen times for them before making the switch permanent in January 2007. On the same day, Steven Gerrard was named on the thirty-man shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year awards. He had finished seventh the year before, and this time he was named in twelfth place as Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro claimed the prize. 1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie left the reds to join Rochdale, after a trial at Millwall earlier in the year. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930. Red trebles 2005 - Future red Fernando Torres grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, as Spain thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Serravalle. 1932 – Gordon Hodgson scored three times in our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round defeat of Accrington Stanley at Anfield. Dave Wright also struck in a 5-1 win. 1908 – Bert Goode netted a treble as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie 4-2 at Nelson, with Arthur Berry also netting. Igor on his way 2000 - It was announced that Igor Bišcan would be joining the reds from Dinamo Zagreb during the Croatian mid-season break. He went on to play 118 reds games, netting three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul in 2005. Beaten twice by Wednesday We have lost two top-flight fixtures to The Wednesday on this day in history. 1901 - Tom Robertson grabbed our consolation in a 2-1 home defeat. John Barnes and Ian Rush struck, with Jan Mølby scoring from the spot. 1974 – Ian Callaghan netted as we beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan converting a penalty. On the move 2000 - Ex-reserves forward John Durnin signed for Kidderminster Harriers. He notched nine times in 32 games before moving on to Port Vale. 2011 - Chris Kirkland joined Doncaster Rovers on loan from Wigan Athletic, playing just once for them. 2012 - Jermaine Pennant joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan from Stoke City, playing fifteen times before returning to the Britannia Stadium. Michael’s golden ball 2002 - We beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, with double goalscorer Michael Owen being presented with the Ballon d’Or trophy for European Football of the Year before the match. A minute’s silence was also observed before kick-off, in memory of the bereaved and survivors of the Hillsborough disaster. Steven Gerrard and Danny Murphy both made their hundredth League appearances for the reds in this game. On the same day, young reserves forward John Miles left for Stoke City on a free transfer. He only made one senior appearance for the Potters before moving on to Crewe Alexandra after being released at the end of that season. On the way to Rome 1977 - We reached our first European Cup Final after beating Zürich 3-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our Semi-final, with Jimmy Case netting a brace and Kevin Keegan grabbing the other, to go through 6-1 on aggregate as forward Alan Waddle made his 22nd and final reds appearance, as a substitute. Keegan said afterwards, “The only reason I have stayed here is to get to the European Cup Final, and now I’ve done that.” Trouncing the Toffees 2016 – Daniel Sturridge reached a half century of reds goals as we thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield. Divock Origi and Mamadou Sakho, in his final reds game, both headed in shortly before the break before Ramiro Funes Mori was dismissed and then Sturridge struck. The scoring was rounded out by Philippe Coutinho. 1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in the Anfield derby. We go again 2014 – We secured a joint club record eleventh consecutive League win when we won 3-2 at Norwich City, also a joint club record sixth straight away League victory. This was also a joint club record 25th consecutive top-flight League game in which we had netted. Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez struck early on as the Uruguayan became the first red to score thirty League goals in a season since Ian Rush in 1987, with Gary Hooper pulling a goal back after the break. Sterling netted again with Robert Snodgrass heading in as we hung on for victory. This left the reds needing just seven points from the last three games to claim the title. Happy birthdays 1902 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop was born in Cudworth, Yorkshire. He played 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1996 – Brazilian loanee midfielder Arthur Melo was born in Goiânia. He joined on loan from Juventus for €4.5m in September 2022, but only made one senior reds appearance as a late substitute at SSC Napoli later that month, due to injury. Red centurions 2005 - Milan Baroš played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 at Portsmouth in a League match, with Fernando Morientes scoring before Diomansy Kamara equalised, with Luis García bagging the winner. 1896 – Forward Malcolm McVean reached a century of reds appearances as we were held to a goalless draw at Small Heath’s Coventry Road ground in a Test Match as we attempted to make it back into the top flight, eventually unsuccessfully. A new boss 1991 - Graeme Souness got off to a good start as Manager as we beat Norwich City 3-0 at Anfield in his first match in charge. The goals came from John Barnes, Ray Houghton and Ian Rush. 1988 - We also faced the Canaries, holding them to a goalless draw at Carrow Road as they became the first team against whom we had twice drawn a blank in the League that season, so holding off our League title celebrations for another three days. Livermore only played eighteen games for us during his five-year spell as a player at Anfield. Racing to a hat-trick 1929 - Harry Race netted three goals in our 5-2 home League win over Sunderland. Gordon Hodgson bagged our other two goals, with Dave Halliday netting two of his thirteen goals against the reds. Adam Allan was dismissed for the visitors. 1931 – Gordon Hodgson grabbed a treble as we thumped Norwich City 6-0 in a Monday night Hospital Charity Cup encounter at their old ground, The Nest. Gordon Gunson bagged a brace with Dave Wright also on target. George returns 1898 - Centre-forward George Allan re-signed for the club from Celtic for £50. He had originally joined from Leith Athletic for £100 in June 1895 and was the first red to be capped by Scotland, top scoring as we claimed the Second Division title in 1896, and again the following season. He returned north of the border in May 1897 for just a season, bagging a total of 56 goals in 96 reds games before sadly dying of tuberculosis in October 1899 aged just 24. Beginning and end 1985 – Gary Gillespie grabbed the first of his sixteen reds goals as we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield, with John Wark and Paul Walsh also on the scoresheet. 1963 – Full-back Allan Jones played his fifth and last reds game as we drew 0-0 at Fulham, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia making his 105th consecutive appearance for the reds. Bruce gets the elbow 1987 - Bruce Grobbelaar broke his elbow as we lost 1-0 at Manchester United, with Peter Davenport bagging the late winner. 1953 - We also visited Old Trafford for a First Division match, with Sammy Smyth on target as we lost 3-1. Forward Arthur Rowley played his eleventh and final reds game with Bryan Williams appearing for the 34th and last time as Stan Pearson scored one of his eleven goals against the reds, with Jack Rowley netting one of his six past us and Johnny Berry also on target. Clean sheets against the Shakers and Blues We have twice beaten Chelsea in First Division meetings on this day in history, without conceding. 1908 - Tom Chorlton and Bill McPherson netted in the last ten minutes of our first ever trip to Stamford Bridge, with left-half Jim Bradley playing his hundredth League game for us. Double farewell 1895 – Left-back Duncan McLean made his 82nd and final reds appearance in our 5-2 Anfield defeat by Preston North End, with outside-left Hugh McQueen playing for the 61st and last time. Harry Bradshaw struck both our goals, with Jackie Pierce nabbing a brace for the visitors. Adam Henderson, Tom Smith and John Cunningham also struck for the Lilywhites. A young Saint no more 1960 - Future red Ian St. John won his second and final Scotland Under-23’s cap in a 1-1 draw with Belgium in Ghent. Green again 1918 – Thomas Green scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Stockport County 4-2 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, our last match of the season. Harry Lewis struck twice, including once from the spot, with Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet. Other reds games 1992 – We were thumped 4-0 at Arsenal. Ian Wright struck the first two of his seven goals against the reds, with David Hillier and Anders Limpar also on target. 1912 – Jimmy Stewart netted as we beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield, before Arthur Goddard converting a twice-taken penalty, having hit the post at the first attempt. 1907 – We lost 2-0 at Notts County. Bruce the champion 1981 – Bruce Grobbelaar kept a clean sheet as Zimbabwe beat Malawi 4-0 in the Final of the Independence Cup in Harare. Also in international action 1994 – Ex-red Jim Magilton played as Northern Ireland beat Liechtenstein 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Windsor Park. Meanwhile, Ian Rush, Ronnie Whelan future reds Gary McAllister, Phil Babb, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jason McAteer and ex-red Steve Staunton all played in friendlies, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland. 2005 – Future red Ragnar Klavan represented Estonia as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Norway in Tallinn. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt Under-20’s in their 1-0 defeat to Mali in an African Championship Finals group game in South Africa. 2019 – Bobby Duncan and Curtis Jones both played for England Under-18’s as they thumped Japan 4-1 in a friendly in Dubai.

Ged’s return 2002 - A famous night in Anfield history came as we defeated Roma 2-0 to qualify for the Quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the current format of the competition. Jari Litmanen’s penalty and an Emile Heskey header ensured we did not miss the injured Michael Owen or suspended Didi Hamann. The night was made complete by the emotional return of Gérard Houllier to the dug-out after heart surgery. Another win in the North East 2006 - We won 3-1 at Newcastle United as we played with three centre-backs and two wing-backs for the first time under Rafael Benítez. Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard struck in the first half before Djibril Cissé converted a penalty after Jean-Alain Boumsong was sent off for bringing down Crouch. Our French striker enraged the home fans who accused him of ‘over-celebrating’ after his goal. 1904 - We visited St. James’ Park for another top-flight meeting, with Arthur Goddard on target in a 1-1 draw. Happy birthdays 1981 – Centre-back Kolo Touré was born in Bouaké in the Ivory Coast. He arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City in July 2013, netting once in 71 reds games before being released in July 2016. 1982 – Substitute keeper Brad Jones was born in Armadale, Australia. He signed from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015. 1966 - Nigel Clough was born in Sunderland. He netted nine times in 44 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for £2,275,000 in June 1993, without making the expected impact at Anfield. He is now Manager of Derby County, after a successful spell in charge of non-league Burton Albion. The secretary made a good start 1938 - We won 3-1 at Brentford in a Second Division match, with Arthur Riley saving a penalty from Bobby Reid. Left-half Jimmy McInnes scored his only reds goal on his debut, with Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson also netting. McInnes only played 48 times for us, and was the club’s Secretary between 1955 and 1965, before hanging himself from the turnstile area of the Kop four days after our first ever FA Cup Final win. United beaten 1995 - We defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the League at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Bruce own goal, the second he had netted for us after a previous one while with Norwich City, and a sweet strike from Jamie Redknapp who was reaching a century of League outings for the reds. This result helped ensure United were denied a third consecutive League title that season. Most recently 2017 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with ex-City player James Milner putting us in front from the spot before Sergio Agüero struck one of his seven goals past us. Wilson joined the backroom team in 1905, staying on staff until the Second World War. 1955 – Lincoln City won 4-2 at Anfield in the Second Division as centre-half Fred Tomley played his second and last reds game. Billy Liddell scored from the spot but Fred Tomley headed into his own net and Fred Middleton converted a penalty to give the Imps a half-time lead. Bob Gibson bagged a brace before Liddell scored again. Heading towards Wembley 1977 - We beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup as we headed towards another Final. David Fairclough and Kevin Keegan struck the goals. 1921 - We also faced Boro, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our top-flight meeting at Ayresome Park from the spot. On the same day, the fourth of five FA Cup Semi-finals to be staged at Anfield took place, with losing Finalists Wolverhampton Wanderers sharing a goalless draw with Cardiff City. Derby stalemates We have twice played out goalless top-flight draws with Everton on this day in history 1966 – Both sides drew blanks at Goodison, with Chris Lawler reaching a century of reds games. 1983 – Another meeting ended without score at Anfield as Graeme Souness played his 200th League game for the reds. Up against Rovers We have twice faced Blackburn Rovers in First Division fixtures on this day. 1927 - Harry Chambers and Tommy Reid were on target in a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Tommy McLean bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Red Harper also scoring one of his five past us. 1932 - Gordon Gunson struck a brace with Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet as we won 3-1 at Ewood Park. Morgan’s first 1898 - Future red Hugh Morgan made his debut for Scotland as they thumped Wales 5-2 in the British International Championships at Fir Park. This was his only cap as a St. Mirren player. Chmabers for England 1923 - Harry Chambers was on target as England thrashed Belgium 6-1 in a friendly at Highbury. Fellow reds Tom Bromilow and Ephraim Longworth also featured. Yet another draw 1975 - We were held for the sixth consecutive League game, this time 1-1 at Leicester City with John Toshack notching our goal, while midfielder Peter Cormack was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. This run helped ensure we missed out on the League title by just two points. Former reds target Frank Worthington netted for the home side. On the move 1987 - Future red Paul Stewart joined Manchester City from Blackpool for £200,000. He bagged an impressive thirty goals in 63 games, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £1.7m in June 1988. 2004 - Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, rejoined Notts County on loan from Sheffield United. He played nine times in this spell. 2012 – Former reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Exeter City on loan from Fulham, playing five times without notching. 2013 – Ex-reds forward Michael Owen announced he would retire from playing at the end of the season, with his career having stalled at Stoke City. Beginning and end 1941 – Winger Jackie Sheldon died. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 2011 - Lucas Leiva became a father for the first time, to Pedro. Other reds games 1994 – We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush put is front before Craig Burley headed into his own net and then pulled a goal back for the visitors. 1980 – We defeated Leeds United 3-0 in L4 as David Johnson struck either side of an Alan Kennedy goal to extend our lead over Manchester United at the top of the table to six points. 1960 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 2-2 draw at home in a Second Division encounter. Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler put us two goals ahead after sixteen minutes, with Billy Liddell having struck the ball so hard after just four minutes that it had burst! Liddell’s second-half penalty hit the post and was cleared away. Kevin McHale and Chris Balderstone then scored to level the match. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Charlton Athletic with Jack Balmer giving the reds a half-time lead. Charlie Vaughan scored one of his four goals against the reds, with Chris Duffy netting the winner. 1924 – We beat Sunderland 4-2 in L4. Harry Chambers scored with Donald McKinlay netting twice before Billy Hogg bagged the last two of his five goals past us, all before half time. Danny Shone completed the scoring, with Elisha Scott saving a penalty from Billy Ellis in the last minute. 1910 – We won 2-1 at Bury. Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard both scored in the opening half hour, but Billy Hibbert grabbed one of his thirteen goals past us late on. Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts. 1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. He signed from Wrexham for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978. Crazy Horse out of the traps 1967 - New record signing Emlyn Hughes made his reds debut in a 2-1 home League win over Stoke City, when Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt netted, while Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us. ‘Crazy Horse’ went on to make 665 reds appearances in total. 1953 – Centre-half Joe Maloney debuted as Bolton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1922 – Winger Cyril Gilhespy made his reds bow as we drew 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers. Setting club records 1978 - Ray Clemence set a club record for a goalkeeper by making his 336th consecutive appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea, with Steve Ogrizovic stepping in to make his debut in the next match. Phil Neal opened the scoring from the spot, our 5,000th League goal to date. Steve Finnieston struck the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Tommy Langley also on the scoresheet. 2000 - Liverpool fielded nine non-British born players for the first time, with Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo being the only home-grown talents who started our 1-1 Premiership draw at Old Trafford, when Patrik Berger netted a trademark free-kick before Ole Gunnar Solskjær equalised. Red trebles at Anfield 1905 - Jack Parkinson netted three in a 5-0 Second Division victory over Blackpool, with Robert Robinson and Arthur Goddard also scoring. 1950 - We also beat the Seasiders, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell on target in our 2-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win, as we headed towards our second Final. The legendary Stan Mortensen bagging one of his eleven strikes against the reds. 1981 - Graeme Souness grabbed a hat-trick to become the first and so far only reds player to bag two European trebles in the same season, in our 5-1 trouncing of CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round first leg, en route to lifting the trophy for the third time. Sammy Lee and Terry McDermott were also on target. The Bulgarians actually made a number of good chances but either missed them, or saw Ray Clemence repel their efforts. Derby joy 1972 - We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield with our first two strikes being own goals, from keeper Tommy Wright and John McLaughlin, with Wright also putting through his own net in his next game! Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes completed the scoring, the latter while playing his 200th League game for the reds. Most recently 2021 – Chelsea won 1-0 behind closed doors at Anfield, thanks to a Mason Mount strike. This condemned us to a fifth consecutive home defeat for the first time in our history. 2015 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Jordan Henderson strike and header from Daniel Sturridge. 2017 – We beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané netting before the break. Danny Welbeck pulled a goal back, but Gini Wijnaldum struck late on. 1933 – Gordon Hodgson struck the only goal of the game as we beat Arsenal 1-0 at Highbury in a top-flight encounter as right-half Tom Morrison played his 200th reds game. Matt McQueen struck twice, with his brother Hugh also on target as keeper Sydney Ross appeared for the 21st and final time. Beating the Geordies We have twice defeated Newcastle United on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush struck as we beat them 2-0 in a Premiership match at Anfield. 1899 - We won a friendly at St. James’ Park 3-1, with George Allan bagging a treble. Thumping Oldham 1944 - Jack Balmer scored four goals as we trounced Oldham Athletic 8-1 at Anfield, in a game that counted for the Wartime League Cup as well as the League. Phil Taylor and Cyril Done both added braces. 1916 - We also beat them in another Wartime League match. Dave Watson and Arthur Metcalf were on target in our 4-1 victory, with Fred Pagnam netting twice. European disappointment 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Genoa in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth Round encounter. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return to crash out 4-1 on aggregate. Red R.I.P.s 1959 - Left-half Tom Bromilow died on a train while returning from a scouting mission for Leicester City. He signed professional terms at Anfield in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England. 1964 – Forward Vic Wright died. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 2021 – Forward Phil Chisnall died. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. For Scotland 1922 - Left-back Donald McKinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park. Partick Thistle’s ex-reds keeper Ken Campbell also featured for Scotland, while Billy Lacey was playing his final game as a reds player for the away side. 1911 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League against a Football League side. 1907 - Ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone won his second and final cap, and only one as a Rangers player, as the Scots lost 1-0 in Wales, also in the British International Championships. Reds defender George Latham was on the winning side. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Denmark in a friendly in Malta. Future reds in opposition 2014 – Alberto Moreno faced Emre Can in an Under-21’s friendly in Palencia, with Spain beating Germany 2-0, with this being Can’s last cap at this level while playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Beating the rest 1931 – Gordon Hodgson and future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tosh Johnson all featured as England beat The Rest 3-2 in a trial match at Highbury, with Dixie Dean bagging a treble. Tosh leaves the Vetch 1984 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, after just two wins in eleven games in this second spell in charge. Other reds games 2006 – Charlton Athletic held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1964 – We came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday. Ian St. John and Willie Stevenson were on the scoresheet. This was Bill Shankly’s 200th game in charge. 1961 – We drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Portsmouth with Alan Banks and Johnny Morrissey scoring our goals. 1911 – We lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur as Billy Minter grabbed one of his five goals past us, with Sam Hardy saving a Bobby Steel penalty. Keepers on the move 1995 - Sander Westerveld joined Vitesse Arnhem from Twente. He played 101 League games for them before moving to Anfield four years later. 2004 - Former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Morecambe on loan from fellow Conference side Shrewsbury Town on loan, making three appearances. Also on the move 1996 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on a free transfer following a loan period. He netted five times in 37 games, before being offloaded to Stoke City. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Bournemouth on loan from Fulham, netting twice in eight outings for the Cherries. 2019 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the second time, having led them to only three victories in fourteen League matches. Also in international action 2010 – Chris Mavinga played for France Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Ukraine in Saint-Denis.

Striking legends arrive 1987 - John Aldridge signed from Oxford United for £750,000. He helped us to win the League title in 1988 and the FA Cup the following season, bagging 63 goals in 104 games before moving to Spain to join Real Sociedad for £1.1m in September 1989, becoming their first non-Basque player. 2006 - Robbie Fowler re-signed on a free transfer from Manchester City after three years with the Blues. He grabbed twelve goals in 39 outings in this second spell, but was released after two seasons, signing on with Cardiff City in July 2007. 1920 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson joined the reds. He struck thirty times in 82 outings, including two hat-tricks, helping us to the League title in 1923 before leaving for Stoke in February 1925. He was noted for his overhead bicycle kicks. Mixed cup fortunes against the Latics 1962 – We beat Oldham Athletic 2-1 at Boundary Park in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, with Ian St. John bagging a brace as centre-half Dick White played his 217th and last reds game. 2013 – We lost 3-2 there at the same stage as Luis Suárez skippered the side for the first time while left-back Jack Robinson played his eleventh and last reds game. Matt Smith opened the scoring for the League One outfit before Suárez equalised and then had a goal ruled out for offside. The Latics went 3-1 up with goals either side of half-time by Smith and Reece Wabara, to become the first side outside the top two divisions to score three FA Cup goals against the reds since Sc***horpe United in January 1956. Joe Allen pulled one back with his first reds strike and Steven Gerrard struck the crossbar in the final minute, but it was not enough. On the way to Cardiff 2001 - We won our FA Cup Fourth Round game 2-0 at Leeds United, with late goals from substitutes Nick Barmby and Emile Heskey. This was Barmby’s eighth and final reds goal. VAR the star 2018 – We lost an FA Cup Fourth Round tie 3-2 at Anfield to West Bromwich Albion, in a game with video technology at its heart. Jay Rodriguez bagged two of his four goals past us to date either side of a Roberto Firmino goal, with all three goals scored inside the first quarter of an hour. The Baggies had a goal disallowed by VAR, before Firmino missed a penalty that was awarded by the same technology, the first time a referee in an English game had used a touchline monitor to make a final decision. Joël Matip scored an own goal in first-half stoppage time, with Mohamed Salah on target after the break. Missing out on Wembley 2015 – We lost 1-0 at Chelsea after extra time in the second leg of our Capital One Cup Semi-final, to lose out 2-1 on aggregate as Branislav Ivanović headed in the winner. He’s scouse, he’s sound 2002 - We had another FA Cup Fourth Round tie, losing 1-0 at Arsenal with three players sent off. Martin Keown was the first to walk, for a challenge on Michael Owen. Goalscorer Dennis Bergkamp was red-carded for a tackle on Jamie Carragher, who was then himself dismissed for the infamous coin-throwing incident. George’s farewell 1951 – George Kay took charge of his final game as Manager as we lost 1-0 at Charlton Athletic, as he was then forced to retire due to illness, with Billy Kiernan netting the first of his five goals against the reds. He had led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later as we won only 142 of his 357 games in charge. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. Right-winger Jimmy Payne reached a century of reds appearances that day. Off goes Double Trigger 1999 - Jason McAteer was sold to Blackburn Rovers for £4m. He had bagged six goals in 139 reds games after arriving from Bolton Wanderers for £4.5m in September 1995. Happy birthday Mike 1965 - Ex-reserves forward Mike Newell was born in Liverpool. He never managed to break through to our first team, going on to enjoy a chequered career at clubs such as Everton, Leicester City, Luton Town, Birmingham City and Aberdeen. 1915 – Scottish left-half John Browning was born in Alexandria. He signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances before moving on to Southern League side Gillingham in August 1939. FA Cup firsts 1894 - We played our first ever game in the FA Cup proper, a 3-0 First Round win over Grimsby Town at Anfield. The Mariners received half the gate money and £100 as the game was switched from their Abbey Park stadium. Sam Widdowson of Nottingham refereed, who had invented shin guards twenty years earlier! Harry Bradshaw bagged a brace with Joe McQue also on target. We only got as far as the Third Round that year. 1934 - We hosted Tranmere Rovers in the Fourth Round, in a game that was originally due to be played at Prenton Park. 61,036 saw the game, our then record attendance. This was our first ever official meeting with Rovers, and we won 3-1 thanks to a brace from Sam English and a Berry Nieuwenhuys goal, but were knocked out by Bolton Wanderers at the next hurdle. Unfortunately, inside-left Syd Roberts was seriously injured in this match, not featuring for the first team for another eleven months. 1968 – Roger Hunt played his 400th reds game as we were held to a goalless draw by Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Dean Court. We won the replay, eventually bowing out to West Bromwich Albion in the Sixth Round. Double-Barrowed departure 1999 - Two ex-reds were released by Barrow. Mike Marsh had spent six months at Holker Street, and remained out of football until joining up with Jan Mølby at fellow Conference side Kidderminster Harriers ten months later. Banging them in 1979 – We visited Bangor City for a friendly, due to the postponement of our FA Cup Third Round meeting with Blackburn Rovers. We won 4-1, despite two inches of snow on the pitch, thanks to a brace from Kenny Dalglish, David Fairclough goal and Terry McDermott penalty, all inside the first half. Moving on loan 1998 - Mark Kennedy joined fellow Premier League side Queens Park Rangers on loan. He struck once in thirteen games but could not prevent them from being relegated from the Bundesliga top flight. 2022 – Keeper Vítězslav Jaroš moved to Notts County from the reds for the rest of the season, playing fifteen times as they failed to make it through the National League Play-offs. Forward Joe Hardy joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle on loan from Accrington Stanley, netting once in eighteen outings. 2023 – Ex-reds defender Ki-Jana Hoever joined Stoke City on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, netting four times in seventeen games in his first spell with the Potters. Internationals in action 2022 – Ex-red Luis Suárez struck the only goal of Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier in Paraguay, with Takumi Minamino and future red Darwin Núñez also featuring in qualifiers. Anfield debut 1884 - The first game at Anfield was played, when Everton beat Earlestown 5-0 in a friendly. ¡Feliz Cumpleaños! 1992 – Midfielder Luis Alberto was born in San José del Valle, Cádiz. He signed from Sevilla for £6.8m in June 2013, making twelve senior appearances in his first campaign before returning to his homeland on loan for the next two seasons, moving on to sold to S.S. Lazio for €4m in August 2016. 2003 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek was born in Wrocław. He joined the Academy in August 2020, signing pro terms the following July. European records 1976 - We registered our then record equal away win in Europe, thumping Northern Irish champions Crusaders 5-0 in our First Round match to go through 7-0 on aggregate, en route to our first European Cup win. David Johnson bagged a brace, to add to goals from Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott and Steve Heighway, with four of our goals coming in the final nine minutes. Captain Jocky 1985 - Alan Hansen was confirmed as club captain in place of Phil Neal, prior to our 4-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. Off the mark 2020 – Diogo Jota scored his first reds goal late on as we beat Arsenal 3-1 behind closed doors at Anfield, despite falling behind to an Alexandre Lacazette goal. Another legend passes on 1944 - Matt McQueen died. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times. He became a Director at the end of the First World War, and then managed the club for five years during the 1920’s, helping us to retain the League title in 1923. 1915 - Inside-right John Tosswill died in the Eastbourne Military Hospital after an illness, aged just 24. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913. Also in Europe 2004 - We lost at Olympiacos in the Champions League group stage, despite the Greek outfit having Anastasious Pantos sent off late on. Ieroklis Stoltidis netted the only goal of the game. 2000 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Rapid Bucureşti to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 1-0 on aggregate, on our way to claiming the trophy for the third time. 2005 – Both sides drew blanks as Chelsea visited Anfield in our most recent European game on this day, a UEFA Champions League group game. 1966 - Ian St. John headed us into the lead before Ian Callaghan’s volley secured a 2-0 victory over Romanians Petrolul Ploieşti in the opening game of our European Cup campaign. Grabara played 35 times while in Denmark, with Karius appearing just five times. Wartime scorers 1940 - Denis Westcott nabbed his first reds goals, scoring both in our 2-0 win at Chester’s Moss Road Ground in a Wartime League game. 1918 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won a Wartime League game at Preston North End 2-0. Thomas Bennett netted the other goal. Ex-reds keepers in opposition 2003 - Two ex-reds custodians, David James and Tony Warner, played against each other as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Millwall in a First Division fixture at Upton Park. 2012 - David James signed for Bournemouth. He stayed until the following March, playing nineteen times for the Cherries. 2015 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux had his loan spell terminated by Swindon Town for paying a £50 fine in pennies, although he was reinstated after he apologised. Other reds games 1991 – Ray Houghton netted as Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. 1988 – Gary Gillespie bagged the only goal of Walsall’s visit in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie. We made it as far as the Fourth Round that season, before being knocked out at West Ham United. 1946 – We beat Leeds United 2-0 in L4, with Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys on target. Albert Stubbins then had a penalty saved. 1929 – We beat Grimsby Town 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson and Harry Race, with Billy Powell dismissed for the visitors. The King, the father 1975 – Future reds legend Kenny Dalglish became a father for the first time, to Kelly. Youngsters in action 2006 - Michael Collins netted for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s, playing alongside Laurence Gaughan and Shane O'Connor as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2012 – Brad Smith won his first cap for England Under-19’s in their 6-0 trouncing of the Faroe Islands in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. 2013 – Harry Wilson bagged a brace for Wales Under-17’s in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Slovenia in Slovakia. 1994 - Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Finland in a European Championships qualifier. 2016 – Rhian Brewster grabbed a treble for England Under-17’s as they thumped Croatia 5-0 in a friendly in Pula, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. New double act 1998 - The first official reds game under the joint command of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier took place. We won 2-1 at Southampton, thanks to goals from Karlheinz Riedle and Michael Owen. Their first signing as joint bosses, Norwegian right-back Vegard Heggem, made his debut in this game. Egil Ostenstad had opened the scoring for the home side. Losing League starts 1975 - Joey Jones made his reds debut as we went down 2-0 in our season opener at Queens Park Rangers, who ended the season in second place, just one point behind the mighty reds. Gerry Francis scored a goal at the end of a slick passing move that was later named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, with substitute Mick Leach adding the second. 1992 - David James made his debut in our 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, our first game in the newly-formed Premiership. This was also the first Premiership game to be screened live on Sky with Teddy Sheringham netting one of his seven goals against us. Birth and death 1964 - Barry Venison was born in Consett. He signed from Sunderland for £200,000 in July 1986 and made 158 appearances for the reds, scoring three times and helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Newcastle United for £250,000 in July 1992. 1999 – Scottish left-winger Tommy McLeod died. He joined the reds from the Army in October 1945, but only made seven senior appearances before joining Chesterfield in June 1951. Mersey Charity 1986 - Three months after beating the Toffees at Wembley to complete our first ever League and Cup double, the two sides met again there for the FA Charity Shield. Ian Rush equalised in our 1-1 draw after Adrian Heath had scored with just ten minutes remaining, with the trophy being shared by the two clubs. Bruce Grobbelaar was replaced by substitute Mike Hooper just before the hour mark, who was making his debut, so ending Bruce’s run of 310 consecutive reds games. New signing Barry Venison also made his first-class reds bow in this match, on his 22nd birthday, while Craig Johnston played his 200th game for the club. Ins and out 2014 – Left-back Alberto Moreno signed from his hometown club Sevilla for £12m. He struck three times in 141 outings before being released in June 2019. 1961 – Centre-half John Nicholson was sold to Port Vale, having only made one senior reds appearance since turning pro in January 1957. He played over 200 games for the Valiants. 1893 – Forward Albert Worgan signed for the reds. He struck twice in two senior outings before moving on in 1895. Most recently 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala and right-back Glen Johnson both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in our season opener. Back up north 1939 – Left-half John Browning moved on to Southern League side Gillingham. He had signed from Dunoon Athletic in March 1934, making just nineteen appearances. 1962 – Right-back John Molyneux was sold back to Chester, having signed from there for £5,500 in June 1955. He bagged three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out. Ephraim on the mark 1924 - Legendary full-back Ephraim Longworth scored one of his four only recorded goals in a public practice game for Stripes vs. Reds. He signed in June 1910 from Leyton Orient, playing 370 times between then and 1928, and becoming the first red to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Kennedy double 1980 - Both Alan and Ray Kennedy scored in our 3-0 defeat of Crystal Palace at Anfield after Kenny Dalglish had opened the scoring. 1969 - We also won in the top-flight, with Emlyn Hughes and Chris Lawler on target in our 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur. Beating the Imps 2006 - A Liverpool XI won 2-1 at Lincoln City, a game arranged as part of the Jack Hobbs transfer a year earlier. Mark González and Besian Idrizaj scored for the reds. Personal honours 2001 - Reds trio Sami Hyypiä, Gary McAllister and Michael Owen were all honoured by legendary French sports paper L’Équipe for the role they played in the club’s unprecedented treble success, being named in their star-studded team of the season. Future red Nicolas Anelka scored while winning his first cap as a Paris Saint-Germain player, with David Trezeguet bagging a hat-trick. Stig Inge Bjørnebye was sent off as he won his 74th cap, his first as a Blackburn Rovers player following his departure from Anfield two months earlier, while John Arne Riise was winning his final cap as an AS Monaco player. The game was staged to officially open the new FinnAir Stadium in Helsinki, with Sami Hyypiä also in action. Olympian reds 2008 – Ryan Babel captained the Netherlands as they lost 2-1 to Javier Mascherano’s Argentina after extra time in the Quarter-final of the Olympics Finals in Shanghai. Meanwhile, Lucas Leiva featured in Brazil’s 2-0 defeat of Cameroon at the same stage in Shenyang. First caps 1995 - Stéphane Henchoz won his first cap as a Hamburger SV player, and eleventh in all, as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland won 2-0 in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Iceland. István Kozma played for Hungary for the first time while with APOEL in their 2-0 home friendly defeat by Israel. Meanwhile, future reds Patrik Berger, Øyvind Leonhardsen and Gary McAllister all also featured in qualifiers. 1992 – Hodgson also took charge of the Swiss as they thumped Estonia 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Tallinn. 2000 - Henchoz also represented his country, making his 43rd appearance in a 2-2 friendly draw with Greece in Saint-Gallen. Crouchie on target again 2006 - Peter Crouch bagged a brace as England beat Greece 4-0 in a friendly at Old Trafford, with Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and future red Stewart Downing also featuring, and Chris Kirkland making a belated first senior international appearance, while Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first cap as an Eintracht Frankfurt player, and twentieth to date. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä won his fiftieth cap as a reds player, and 76th in all, captaining Roy Hodgson’s Finland to a 2-1 home defeat to Northern Ireland. Ayre apparent 2007 - Commercial Director Ian Ayre started work in his new job for the club. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having once been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said on being appointed that, “being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. He was promoted to Managing Director in May 2014, leaving the club in February 2017 to take charge of TSV 1860 München. Youngsters on target 2005 - Anthony Le Tallec struck as France Under-21’s drew 2-2 with Italy in a friendly in Libourne, with fellow red Carl Medjani also featuring. On the same day, Besian Idrizaj won his last Under-19’s cap for Austria as a Linzer ASK player, scoring in their friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Gussing. On the move 1995 - Paul Jewell joined First Division Grimsby Town on loan from Bradford City. International goalscorers 2013 – Luis Suárez struck as Uruguay beat Japan 4-2 in a friendly in Rifu. Meanwhile, future red Rickie Lambert scored the winner on his debut as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Scotland 3-2 at Wembley, while future red Mohamed Salah scored in Egypt’s 3-0 friendly defeat of Uganda behind closed doors. Dejan Lovren featured for Croatia for the first time since joining Southampton in their 3-2 friendly win in Lichtenstein, with Nikolay Mihaylov winning his first cap as a Hellas Verona player in Bulgaria’s 2-0 defeat by FYR Macedonia in Skopje.
