The first title 1901 – We won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion to clinch our first League title, with inside-right Johnny Walker on target in the first half of our final game of the season against the already-relegated Baggies. A fife and drum band playing “The Conquering Hero” welcomed the team back into Liverpool. The plan was to lift Club Secretary Tom Watson shoulder high in celebration, but as the Liverpool Echo said, “No arms were long enough to grip his girth.” However, our two inter-war meetings with the Baggies both resulted in 2-1 defeats. 1922 - Harry Beadles nabbed our consolation at Anfield, with Howard Gregory bagging a brace for the Baggies. 1933 - Tom Bradshaw was on target at The Hawthorns, with forward Ted Crawford playing his eighth and last reds game. Billy Richardson scored one of his nine goals past us, with Jock Carter also on target. Nando’s last 2006 - Fernando Morientes scored his twelfth and final reds goal, which was our 300th against Aston Villa in all competitions. Gareth Barry equalised with one of his four goals past us to date before Steven Gerrard struck his twentieth and 21st goals of the season to hand us a 3-1 victory in our last home game of the season. This brought us to 48 points from home League games that campaign, our highest ever tally in a 38-game season. Djimi Traoré made his 141st and last reds appearance in this game. 1961 - Dave Hickson played his 67th and last reds game in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland, with Roger Hunt netting our goal. We have twice more faced Aston Villa in the First Division on this day in history. 1899 - Centre-forward George Allan made his 96th and final reds appearance as we were thumped 5-0 at Villa Park. This was our last match of the season, in which Villa won the title by two points from the second-placed reds. Fred Wheldon struck the last two of his five goals against the reds, with Jack Devey nabbing two of his seven past us and Jimmy Crabtree also on target. 1911 - We won 3-1 at Anfield, with Ronald Orr bagging a brace and John McDonald also on the scoresheet as we finished in thirteenth after this our final game of the season, with Joe Walters netting one of his five goals against the reds. Unfortunately, this result helped Manchester United to claim their second League title. 1972 – We lost the second leg of the FA Youth Cup Final at Anfield 4-2 to Aston Villa, having already been beaten 1-0 in the first game. The reds included Brian Kettle and Phil Thompson. Testimonial for Shanks 1975 - A testimonial match for Bill Shankly was played at Anfield. Emlyn Hughes and Jimmy Case both bagged braces, with Alan Waddle and Tommy Smith also on target as the reds beat a Don Revie Select side 6-2. 1992 - We took part in another testimonial, drawing a benefit game for our former reserves forward Wayne Harrison 2-2 at Oldham Athletic. Don Hutchinson and Ronnie Rosenthal were on the scoresheet. Harrison had signed from Oldham for £250,000 in January 1985 but never made a senior reds appearance before he retired due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. Falling at the final hurdle 2010 – We were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League at the Semi-final stage on away goals by Club Atlético de Madrid, the third time in our history we had fallen foul of this rule in Europe. Alberto Aquilani opened the scoring just before the break with his second and final goal for the club, with the tie having to go into extra time. Yossi Benayoun scored his 29th and last reds goal early in the additional half hour, but Diego Forlán then bagged a crucial away goal, the last of his four past us. Philipp Degen played his thirteenth and final reds game. King Kenny starts out 1968 - Kenny Dalglish signed as a professional for Celtic. He helped them to four League titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup, bagging 167 goals in 322 games before moving to Anfield for £440,000 in August 1977. 2018 – Roberto Firmino signed a new contract, having scored fifty times in 140 reds games to that point. 1957 – Full-back Allan Jones and winger Johnny Morrissey both signed pro terms with the reds. Morrissey struck six times in 37 outings before crossing the park to Everton for £10,000 in September 1962, for whom he scored fifty times in 314 appearances, helping them to two League titles. Wembley disappointment 1950 - We lost our second FA Cup Final, this time 2-0 to Arsenal with Reg Lewis scoring in each half, the last of his five strikes against us, despite the reds having beaten the Gunners twice in the League that season. It was to be another fifteen years before we finally won the famous trophy. We had to wear blue socks in this match, due to a mix-up over changing from the usual red ones to white, with neither side playing in their regular home strips. Off the mark 1995 – Steve Harkness struck the first of his three reds goals early on at Norwich City, with Robert Ullathorne equalising soon after. Ian Rush grabbed the winner as we won 2-1, with City on their way down to the Endsleigh League. Beating the Clarets We have defeated Burnley twice at Anfield on this day in history, without conceding a single goal. 1905 - Jack Cox, Robbie Robinson and Jack Parkinson were on the scoresheet. Keeper Ned Doig saved a penalty in what was our final game of the season, as we claimed the Second Division championship for a third time. 1914 - A friendly ended 1-0 to the reds, with centre-half Bob Ferguson netting. Award winners 2022 - Mohamed Salah was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for the second time, as he eventually netted 31 times in 51 reds games that season, helping us to claim a cup double. On the same day, young forward Fidel O’Rourke signed a new deal. He had joined the Academy as an Under-14. 2023 – On-loan Conor Bradley won the Player’s Player of the Season, Young Player of the Year (joint) and fans' Player of the Season after an impressive campaign with Bolton Wanderers. 2007 - On-loan keeper Scott Carson was named Charlton Athletic’s Player of the Season, despite the Addicks being on their way down to the Championship. 2001 – Steven Gerrard was named the PFA Young Player of the Year, to become the fourth reds recipient after Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler (twice) and Michael Owen. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year, for the first of eight times, a record in the Premier League era. Peter’s double ton 1968 – Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Jimmy Greaves bagged one of his twelve goals against the reds before Tony Hateley headed in an equaliser. Winger Peter Thompson made his 200th League appearance for the reds. Off to Plainmoor 1935 - We played a friendly at Torquay United as part of the transfer of left-back Jack Tennant and fellow defender Alf Gray from the Gulls the previous season. We lost 7-2, with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys on target for the reds. 1924 – We lost 4-1 at Partick Thistle in a testimonial match for the Jags’ Tommy Crichton. First caps 1981 - Ronnie Whelan won the first of his 53 Republic of Ireland caps, helping them to a 3-1 victory over Czechoslovakia at Lansdowne Road as a substitute. Also in action that day was Terry McDermott, coming off the bench as Romania held England to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. 1980 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén won his first Under-21’s cap as Sweden lost 2-1 to the USSR in a friendly in Kyiv. International reds on target 1987 - Ian Rush netted while winning his final cap in his first spell as a reds player. Wales drew 1-1 with Czechoslovakia in a European Championships qualifier in Wrexham. Meanwhile, Jan Mølby struck the only goal of Denmark’s win in Finland, his first goal for his country. John Aldridge, Ronnie Whelan and future reds John Barnes and Ray Houghton all also turned out for their countries that day. 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott won his fourth and final cap for England Under-15’s, bagging a brace to complete a streak of scoring in each appearance. England beat Austria 5-3 in a tournament game in Italy. Young reds for England 1997 - Michael Owen netted for the England Under-18’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Portugal at Gigg Lane. Jamie Carragher and future red Emile Heskey appeared for the Under-21’s at The Valley on the same day, as England were held to a goalless draw by Georgia in another qualifier while Alex Manninger played as Austria Under-21’s thumped Estonia 7-1, with fellow future red Vegard Heggem featuring as Norway Under-21’s beat Finland 3-0. 2001 - John Welsh scored from the spot as England Under-16’s beat Germany 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after their European Championships Quarter-final ended 1-1 at the Cellnet Riverside Stadium. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani won his thirteenth and final cap for Italy in the same competition as they drew 1-1 with Spain in Sunderland, with Fernando Torres netting for Spain who also went through after penalties. Derby disappointment 1895 – We lost the Liverpool Senior Cup Final 3-0 at Goodison Park. Other reds games 2000 – We lost 2-0 at Chelsea with George Weah and Roberto Di Matteo both on target inside the opening quarter of an hour. 1978 – Terry McDermott and David Fairclough struck as we won 2-0 at West Ham United. 1964 – We lost 3-1 at Stoke City as we ended our title-winning campaign with a defeat. Keith Bebbington scored for the Potters before Alf Arrowsmith levelled the scores. John Ritchie netted one of his five goals past us and Peter Dobing struck one of his eight. 1963 – Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 in L4. 1925 – Cardiff City won 2-1 at Anfield with Fred Baron bagging our goal. Keepers in opposition 2004 – Pepe Reina came off the bench for Spain Under-21’s as they beat Australia Under-23’s 1-0 in Lorca, with fellow future reds keeper Brad Jones winning the first of his six caps at this level for the losing side. Lee Peltier played for England Under-18’s on the same day. No longer a Tractor boy 2001 - John Scales was released by Ipswich Town. He had only made four appearances since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur the previous July. Leo in the big time 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his first cap as a Rosenborg BK player, and twelfth in total, playing alongside clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye and fellow future red Torben Piechnik as Denmark beat Norway 1-0 in Århus. Future reds Nigel Clough and Paul Stewart and ex-reds John Aldridge and Steve Staunton also featured in internationals the same day. Also in international action 1972 – Emlyn Hughes played as England lost 3-1 to West Germany in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. 2002 – David Raven captained England Under-17’s to a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands in a European Championships group game in Denmark, with David Mannix and Mark Smyth also in action. 2003 – Daniel Sjölund featured as Finland Under-21’s lost 3-0 to Russia in a friendly. 2016 – Curtis Jones played for England Under-15’s as they beat USA Under-16’s 4-3 but then lost a penalty shoot-out 7-5 in Italy. 2019 – Luke Chambers and Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-15’s in a 6-0 thumping of Qatar. 2022 – Carter Pennington converted his spot kick as England Under-15’s lost a shoot-out 5-4 after their friendly in Slovenia had ended goalless. -

Tim Cahill headed the visitors back into the game with one of his five goals against us, also their hundredth League goal in an Anfield derby. Substitute Andy van der Meyde was sent off for elbowing Xabi Alonso just five minutes after coming on before Harry Kewell rounded off a 3-1 victory with a fine strike. The two clubs had received special permission for Gerrard and James Beattie to wear ‘08’ shirts to promote Liverpool’s status as the European Capital of Culture in 2008. 1905 – Orlando Evans was sent off for Burton United for kicking Sam Raybould as we lost 2-1 at Peel Croft in a Second Division meeting. Winger Jack Cox struck our goal. We’re all off to Wembley 1984 - The first all-Merseyside cup final ended in a goalless draw, after extra time. The game was notable for a failed penalty appeal for handball against Alan Hansen, and an Alan Kennedy goal that was disallowed for offside. We clinched our fourth consecutive League Cup in the replay three days later. 1950 - We won through to our first Wembley FA Cup Final, beating Everton 2-0 at Maine Road thanks to goals from Bob Paisley and Billy Liddell. He signed on loan from Schalke 04 in February 2021, making thirteen senior reds appearances in his time at Anfield Igor sees red 2004 - Igor Bišcan was sent off after Emile Heskey had given us the lead at the Stade Vélodrome as we lost 2-1 on the night to Olympique de Marseille, with Didier Drogba converting the resulting penalty, one of his eleven goals past us. Jimmy Millar scored one of his four goals past the reds with John Campbell adding a brace. 1921 – Winger Chris Harrington played his fourth and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur, with Dick Forshaw on target. 1933 – Outside-left Gordon Gunson played his 87th and last reds game as we were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield by Blackburn Rovers. Gordon Hodgson and Harold Barton netted for the reds, while Tommy McLean struck one of his five goals against us, with Ernie Thompson also scoring. In comes Bill 1899 – Keeper Bill Perkins signed from Luton Town for £200. He went on to play 117 times, including every game in our first League championship winning season in 1900/01. He returned to the amateur game in 1903, joining Northampton Town. No longer in training 1893 – Trainer Wally Richardson had to step in to play his only reds game in our Lancashire League fixture against Rossendale United at Anfield due to injuries. Beating the Geordies We have twice beaten Newcastle United in the top flight at Anfield on this day in history. 2000 - We won 2-1 as substitute Jamie Redknapp headed a dramatic winner. Titi Camara had opened the scoring with his tenth and final reds goal before Alan Shearer nodded in a leveller, one of his eight goals against the reds. 1975 - John Toshack netted twice as we triumphed 4-0, with future and past Magpies Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott also netting. International beginnings and end 1981 - Steve Heighway won his 33rd and final cap for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 1-0 to Belgium in a World Cup qualifier in Liège. Future red Michael Robinson also played with future red Joe Corrigan also in international action. 1998 - Future red Craig Bellamy won his first senior international cap as Wales were held to a goalless draw by Jamaica in a friendly at Ninian Park. Robbie Keane made his senior bow for the Irish on the same day while fellow future red Vladimír Šmicer was on target in the Czech Republic’s 2-1 friendly win in Olomouc. Also in action were Paul Ince, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Steve McManaman, Michael Owen and future reds Markus Babbel, Bernard Diomède, Dietmar Hamann, Stéphane Henchoz, Paul Jones and Christian Ziege. 2011 – Future reds keeper Simon Mignolet made his senior international bow as Belgium won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Austria. 2017 – Corey Whelan won his first Under-21’s cap for the Republic of Ireland in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Kosovo in Dublin. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge for the first of two times in his first spell in charge of Cameroon as they won a friendly 3-1 in Kuwait. 2022 – Song was Manager for the first game of his second period as Cameroon boss as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 to Algeria in Douala. Harvey Elliott made his debut for England Under-21’s as they thumped Andorra 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Bournemouth, with Curtis Jones also featuring, while future red Fabio Carvalho debuted for Portugal Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Iceland in Portimão. Oakley Cannonier debuted and Isaac Mabaya won his only cap at this level, with both scoring for England Under-18’s as they beat Sweden 3-2 in a tournament game in Malaga. Mohamed Salah’s Egypt beat Sadio Mané’s 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cairo. Morgan Boyes, Leighton Clarkson, Terence Miles, Tyler Morton, Kostas Tsimikas, Sepp van den Berg and future reds Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Calvin Ramsay all also appeared for their country that day. Jarell Quansah netted his first goal for England Under-20’s in their 4-2 defeat by the USA in Spain, with Dominic Corness and Tyler Morton also featuring. Also in international action that day were Luke Chambers, Kieran Morrison, Andy Robertson and ex-reds Emre Can, Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland. Irish reds for both sides 1992 - Ex-red John Aldridge bagged a penalty in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland at Lansdowne Road. Ronnie Whelan put though his own net, while ex-reds Kevin Sheedy and Steve Staunton also featured. This was Sheedy’s first cap as a Newcastle United player. John Barnes and future reds Nigel Clough, Karlheinz Riedle and Paul Stewart all also played for their countries that day. Mixed fortunes against the Trotters 1922 - We beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at Burnden Park in a First Division fixture, with Dick Forshaw grabbing a brace and Harry Chambers also on target late on with his fiftieth League strike for the reds. Jock McNab was sent off for retaliation between our second and third goals. Joe Smith struck one of his twelve goals past us as David Ashworth took charge of the reds for the hundredth time in the League. 1940 - We also met them in a friendly, losing 1-0 at Anfield. The Wright move 1982 - Mark Wright joined Southampton from Oxford United in a deal that saw £80,000 and forward Keith Cassells also head south, with midfielder Trevor Hebberd leaving the Saints. He had only made eleven senior appearances for the U’s, but established himself with England while at The Dell. On the move en masse 2004 - Three ex-reds reserves switched clubs. Forward Jon Newby left Huddersfield Town to join York City on loan, but he failed to find the net in seven games for the Minstermen. Midfielder Danny Williams joined Bristol Rovers from Kidderminster Harriers on a free transfer, for whom he made just six first-team appearances, scoring once, before rejoining Wrexham in May 2004. Meanwhile, Layton Maxwell, who scored in his only senior reds game, joined Swansea City on non-contract terms. He played for the Swans three times, moving on to Mansfield Town in December 2004, after a spell with Rhyl. Also on the move 1999 - Steve Nicol was released by Conference side Doncaster Rovers after one season at Belle Vue. On the same day, Paul Dalglish joined Norwich City on loan from Newcastle United. He played five times before signing permanently in May of that year. Also, Mike Newell re-joined Crewe Alexandra from Aberdeen on a free transfer. Former reserves forward Astrit Ajdarević joined Hereford United on loan from Leicester City on the same day, making just one substitute appearance for the Bulls. 2014 – Centre-half James Smith joined Telford United on loan from Southport. Youngsters off the mark 1908 – Centre-half Norman James was born in Liverpool. Bayern München’s Emre Can won his fifth and last cap for Germany Under-19’s as they beat Ukraine 2-0 in a friendly in Wuppertal, with future red Joe Gomez playing for England Under-17’s. Ian Wright had put the visitors ahead from the spot with one of his seven strikes against the reds. 2000 - We again faced the Gunners at home, with strikes from Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Nick Barmby and substitute Fowler giving us a comprehensive 4-0 win. A Milanese arrival 2001 - Milan Baroš officially completed his signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m. He grabbed a total of 27 goals in 108 reds games, helping us to claim the Worthington Cup in 2003 and the Champions League two years later before joining Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005. On the same day, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sent off as Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield. Off on loan 2004 - Ex-reds loanee keeper Paul Jones signed for Watford on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Four apiece 1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Jonjo off 2012 - We lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Jonjo Shelvey somewhat harshly dismissed in the first half, and Fabio Borini having to go off injured at half-time. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game. 1982 – Forward Colin Russell moved on to Huddersfield Town. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. However, Patrick Bamford converted a stoppage time spot kick to send the match to a shoot-out. 2015 – We beat League Two side Carlisle United 3-2 on penalties after another Third Round tie ended 1-1 after extra time. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. King Kenny’s centuries 1986 - Kenny Dalglish skippered Scotland while winning his hundredth cap in a 3-0 friendly defeat of Romania at Hampden Park. Alan Hansen and ex-red Graeme Souness both also played. On the same day, future red Mark Wright captained England as they beat the USSR 1-0 in a friendly in Tblisi. Births and death 1871 - Forward Malcolm McVean was born in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire. McVean signed from Third Lanark in 1892, scored our first ever League goal, bagging 43 in total in 126 reds games. He died back in his native Scotland in 1907 aged just 36. 1953 – Defender Dave Rylands was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in 1968, turning pro in March 1970, only making one senior appearance before joining Hereford United in September 1974. 2018 – Right-back John Molyneux died. He signed from Chester for £5,500 in June 1955, bagging three goals in 249 games, but did not survive Bill Shankly’s early clear-out, returning to his former club in August 1962. Sir Roger MBE 2000 - Roger Hunt finally received his MBE at Buckingham Palace, many years after most of the rest of his fellow 1966 World Cup winning side. 2023 - James Milner was presented with his MBE at Windsor Castle, having been recognised for his services to football and charity the previous June. Death of a legend 2002 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins died. He struck 83 times in 178 reds matches after signing from Newcastle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album, and became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade. 2010 – Israeli defender Avi Cohen died in Tel-Aviv, following a motorcycle crash. He was actually born in Egypt, and only made 24 appearances during his Anfield career after signing for £200,000 from Maccabi Tel-Aviv in July 1979, with his most memorable game coming in May 1980 as we clinched our twelfth League title. He put through his own net before scoring his only reds goal at the same end in the second half, as we beat Aston Villa 4-1. 2021 – Scouse forward Steve Peplow died. He joined the reds in June 1964, turning pro in January 1966 on his seventeenth birthday. He struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. City three times 2003 - We played our first game at Manchester City’s new City Of Manchester Stadium. Vladimír Šmicer scored our 250th League goal against City, a header that was missed by the TV cameras. Nicolas Anelka had put the home side in front with one of his five goals past us, but Didi Hamann also struck to give us the lead before another ex-red, Robbie Fowler, nabbed a very late goal as the game ended 2-2. We have also twice recently hosted City at Anfield 1992 – We were held to a 1-1 draw when Ian Rush struck our goal and Niall Quinn struck for the visitors. 1994 - Robbie Fowler netted as we won 2-0, with our first strike being a Terry Phelan own goal. Most recently 2021 - Mohamed Salah had an early penalty saved as we lost 1-0 at Leicester City, with Ademola Lookman scoring with the Foxes’ only shot on target. Fined 2011 – The club was fined £20,000 by the FA and warned as to their future conduct for “failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion” during the League game at Fulham earlier in the month, following Jay Spearing’s sending off. On the same day, Luis Suárez was banned for one match and fined £20,000 after he admitted an FA charge of improper conduct relating to the same match. Stevie on and off again 1998 - Steven Gerrard came on as a substitute for Steve McManaman who had been hurt by future red Dietmar Hamann, later himself being replaced by David Thompson after being injured in a challenge with Stuart Pearce, as we staged a comeback to beat Newcastle United 4-2 at Anfield. Michael Owen and Karlheinz Riedle both netted braces, while Hamann was sent off for two bookable offences. Thumping wins 1893 - We beat Crewe Alexandra 5-0 at Nantwich Road in a Second Division match with Harry Bradshaw, Patrick Gordon, David Henderson, Hugh McQueen and Malcolm McVean all scoring. 1918 - We trounced Burnley 7-0 at Anfield in a Wartime League game. John Miller bagged a treble, with Harry Lewis netting a brace, and Reginald Phillips and Walter Wadsworth also on target. Signing on 2004 - Dietmar Hamann signed a new two-year contract. He nabbed eleven goals in 283 appearances for the reds in total, helping us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield after signing from Newcastle United for £8m in July 1999, but moved on to Manchester City in July 2006 after a bizarre detour to Bolton Wanderers. 2022 – Forward Cody Gakpo agreed to sign from PSV Eindhoven in January for a reported initial £40m. On the move 2007 - Reserves centre-half James Smith left Anfield to sign for Stockport County on a free transfer after a successful loan spell. 2009 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Sporting Clube de Portugal from Club Atlético de Madrid for €6.5m. He had bagged five goals in forty outings for the Madrid side. 2016 – Left-back Kostas Tsimikas joined Esbjerg on loan from Olympiacos, notching twice in thirteen appearances in Denmark. International bow 1995 – Forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason made his debut for Iceland Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Cyprus in the Israel Tournament. 1994 – He also featured for the Under-17’s as they were beaten 3-1 by Sweden in another tournament in Israel. Management appointments 2007 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Fulham, taking over two days later with the side in the relegation zone. He led them to just nine points from his first thirteen games in charge. However, twelve points from the last five games kept them in the Premiership. They finished seventh in his first full campaign, their best-ever League finish. He took them to the UEFA Europa League Final in the following campaign, where they lost out to Club Atlético de Madrid, also finishing twelfth in the League. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1906 - Forward Harry Barkas was born in Wardley Colliery. He only played five reds games, all in the First Division, after arriving for £1,500 from Gateshead in December 1930, returning there in 1932. Martin’s bow 2008 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel made his reds debut as a substitute for the injured Álvaro Arbeloa in our 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, our fourth successive tie in the League. In comes Scott 2005 - Young keeper Scott Carson signed from Leeds United for £750,000, with Paul Harrison going on loan in the opposite direction. Carson made just nine first-team appearances, only managing to keep two clean sheets. He moved on to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008 after loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic. Africa’s finest 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named as the Glo-CAF African Footballer of the Year for the second successive season, a feat since surpassed by Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o who won the award three times in succession. That evening, he scored the opener in our 2-0 Worthington Cup Semi-final second leg win over Sheffield United at Anfield, with Michael Owen grabbing the decisive second in extra time, to take us through to Cardiff 3-2 on aggregate. Other birthdays 1961 - Former reserves forward Colin Russell was born in Liverpool. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. He left for Huddersfield Town in 1982. 1904 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was born in Coylton, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in February 1928 for £4,000 and struck four times in 254 reds games. He failed to win any honours during his spell at Anfield but had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren before joining the reds. He was a member of the Sunderland team that won the League title in 1936, having moved to Wearside in November 1935. Ton up for Rigo 2006 - Ex-red Rigobert Song won his hundredth full international cap for Cameroon in their 3-1 defeat of Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cairo. On the same day, Jari Litmanen was making his 99th appearance for Finland as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia in a tournament in Riyadh, in what was Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of the Finns. 2010 – Song also represented his country, as they drew 2-2 with Tunisia in a MTN Africa Cup of Nations group game in Angola. 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah played for Egypt as they beat Uganda 1-0 in a group game in Gabon. Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He went on to score 24 times in 133 games for the Toffees before moving across Stanley Park. International beginnings and ends 1974 - Future red Alan Kennedy made his debut for England Under-23’s, playing alongside fellow future red David Johnson in their 3-1 European Championships defeat of Czechoslovakia at Selhurst Park. 1997 – Forde Kippe bagged his only goal for Norway Under-21’s, with Vegard Heggem playing for the thirteenth and final time at this level in a 3-2 defeat of France in a European Championships qualifier in Valenciennes. 1999 – Michael Foley played for the Irish Under-16’s as they were held to a goalless draw by Wales in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin. Other reds games 1994 – We won 3-1 at Ipswich Town with John Barnes adding to a Robbie Fowler brace. 1991 – Steve McManaman and Ian Rush struck as Port Vale held us to a 2-2 draw in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but lost at Peterborough United at the next hurdle. 1988 – We won 2-0 at West Ham United thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley. 1977 – David Fairclough netted as we lost 3-1 at Manchester City. Brian Kidd scored one of his six goals against the reds, with Mick Channon netting one of his seven past us and Joe Royle one of his five. 1966 – We lost 2-0 at Stoke City. John Ritchie struck one of his five goals against us, with Peter Dobing bagging one of his eight. 1955 – Alan Arnell and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Rotherham United 2-0 in the Second Division at Anfield. 1949 – Billy Liddell bagged the only goal of our trip to Fulham. 1898 – We came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Anfield after Walter Bennett had nabbed the first of his four goals past us. Andrew McCowie converted a penalty, with George Allan also netting. On the move 2010 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Brentford, having been released by Coventry City. He made fourteen appearances before joining Hartlepool United. 2003 – Stewart Downing joined Sunderland on loan from Middlesbrough, bagging three goals in seven games. St. Michael the dad again 2007 – Ex-reds forward Michael Owen became a father for the third time, to Emily May. -
Hat-tricks all round 2002 - Michael Owen bagged a treble as we won 3-0 at Manchester City. It was our 400th Premier League match, and Steven Gerrard made his 150th reds appearance in the game. 1895 - George Allan scored four goals in our 5-1 Second Division defeat of Burslem Port Vale at Anfield, with David Hannah netting the other. Full-back Archie Goldie made his reds bow in this game. 2003 - Kevin Lisbie bagged a treble for Charlton Athletic as we lost 3-2 at The Valley, with Steven Gerrard playing his 200th reds game. Vladimír Šmicer scored and Michael Owen converted a penalty. Anfield debut 1884 - The first game at Anfield was played, when Everton beat Earlestown 5-0 in a friendly. ¡Feliz Cumpleaños! 1992 – Midfielder Luis Alberto was born in San José del Valle, Cádiz. He signed from Sevilla for £6.8m in June 2013, making twelve senior appearances in his first campaign before returning to his homeland on loan for the next two seasons, moving on to sold to S.S. Lazio for €4m in August 2016. 2003 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek was born in Wrocław. He joined the Academy in August 2020, signing pro terms the following July. European records 1976 - We registered our then record equal away win in Europe, thumping Northern Irish champions Crusaders 5-0 in our First Round match to go through 7-0 on aggregate, en route to our first European Cup win. David Johnson bagged a brace, to add to goals from Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott and Steve Heighway, with four of our goals coming in the final nine minutes. Crusaders had been unfortunate enough to hit the woodwork twice before we had opened the scoring on the night. 1982 - Anfield witnessed its lowest ever European attendance of just 12,021 as we beat Dundalk 1-0 in our European Cup First Round second leg, to progress 5-1 on aggregate. Ronnie Whelan volleyed the only goal, just nine minutes from time to secure a joint club record 25th consecutive game unbeaten in all competitions. Terry McDermott was making his farewell reds appearance, and 329th in all. 1983 - Phil Neal missed his first game in seven years as Michael Robinson scored his first two reds goals as we beat Danes OB Odense 5-0 at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish also struck twice, to break Denis Law’s British record for most goals in the European Cup, reaching fifteen. Our other strike came from a Frank Clausen own goal. Captain Jocky 1985 - Alan Hansen was confirmed as club captain in place of Phil Neal, prior to our 4-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. Ian Rush and Mark Lawrenson both scored, before Jan Mølby added two penalties. Craig Johnston reached a century of League games for the reds. Off the mark 2020 – Diogo Jota scored his first reds goal late on as we beat Arsenal 3-1 behind closed doors at Anfield, despite falling behind to an Alexandre Lacazette goal. Sadio Mané equalised with Andy Robertson putting us in front at the break. Out with the old, in with the new 1957 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 326th and final reds game and full-back Tom McNulty making his 36th and last appearance as we were thumped 5-1 at Charlton Athletic, with Tony Rowley grabbing our consolation. Gerry Byrne made his reds bow in the same game, scoring an own goal. Bobby Ayre bagged a treble, with South African centre-forward Stuart Leary netting the last of his six strikes against the reds. Another legend passes on 1944 - Matt McQueen died. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times. He became a Director at the end of the First World War, and then managed the club for five years during the 1920’s, helping us to retain the League title in 1923. 1915 - Inside-right John Tosswill died in the Eastbourne Military Hospital after an illness, aged just 24. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913. Another win 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum bagged the only goal of our League visit to Sheffield United to secure our seventh straight League win from the start of the season. Another debutant 1912 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 at West Bromwich Albion. Tom Miller grabbed our consolation. 1935 - We had a happier time against the Baggies, thumping them 5-0 at Anfield, with Lance Carr bagging a brace and Berry Nieuwenhuys, Gordon Hodgson and Fred Howe all on the scoresheet. Running riot at Molineux 1968 - We recorded our equal biggest win over Wolverhampton Wanderers as Roger Hunt, ex-Wolves star Alun Evans and Peter Thompson all netted braces in a 6-0 top-flight thumping. A derby win 1963 - Ian Callaghan netted twice as we beat Everton 2-1 at Anfield, with Roy Vernon bagging one of his six goals against the reds as Ron Yeats reached a century of reds appearances. Tons up 1974 - Phil Boersma played his hundredth reds game as we lost a First Division match 1-0 at Sheffield United, thanks to an Alan Woodward goal. 2021 – Jordan Henderson played his 400th reds game as we thumped Porto 5-1 in their Estádio do Dragão in a UEFA Champions League group encounter. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino struck twice each, with Sadio Mané also netting as future red Luis Díaz appeared for the home side. Also in Europe 2004 - We lost at Olympiacos in the Champions League group stage, despite the Greek outfit having Anastasious Pantos sent off late on. Ieroklis Stoltidis netted the only goal of the game. 2000 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Rapid Bucureşti to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 1-0 on aggregate, on our way to claiming the trophy for the third time. 2005 – Both sides drew blanks as Chelsea visited Anfield in our most recent European game on this day, a UEFA Champions League group game. 1966 - Ian St. John headed us into the lead before Ian Callaghan’s volley secured a 2-0 victory over Romanians Petrolul Ploieşti in the opening game of our European Cup campaign. Mixed fortunes against the Brummies and Rovers We have twice scored three against the Blues from Birmingham at Anfield, although one of these occasions ended in defeat. 1901 - We beat Small Heath, as they were then known, 3-1, with Sam Raybould on target twice and Tom Robertson converting a penalty while centre-half Alex Raisbeck reached a century of League outings for the reds. 1907 - Birmingham City left L4 with all the points having won 4-3. Arthur Goddard, Joe Hewitt and Robbie Robinson grabbed our goals. Arthur Mounteney struck two of his five goals past us, with Benny Green and Edmund Eyre also on target. We have met Blackburn Rovers three times in the Lancashire Senior Cup on this day in history. 1927 – We won a Second Round tie 4-3 at Anfield. Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Bill Devlin and Tommy Reid also on target. 1936 – We lost 2-1 at Ewood Park in the First Round, benefitting from an own goal. 1938 – We drew another First Round tie 4-4, with Stanley Eastham converting a penalty and Bill Kinghorn, John Browning and George Paterson also netting. Reserve birthdays 1964 - Reserves forward Paul Jewell was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team, moving on to Wigan Athletic for £15,000 in December 1984. He also had a successful spell with Bradford City, before moving into management. 1981 - More recent second-string striker John Miles was born in Fazakerley. He too never broke through to the first eleven at Anfield but continued his career in the lower leagues. 1897 - Harry Beadles was born in Llanllwehaiarn, Newtown in Wales. He bagged six goals in eighteen games after signing on for free from Grayson’s FC in June 1921, but left three years later to join Cardiff City. Forwards on their way out 1999 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was sold to Fulham for £200,000. He netted six goals in 35 outings in two seasons at Craven Cottage, as his career wound to an end. 1983 - Reserves forward Mike Newell joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer, having failed to break into the first team at Anfield. He only lasted one month and three matches at Gresty Road, before moving to Wigan Athletic on another free transfer. 2013 – Nigel Clough was sacked as Manager of Derby County having been in charge since January 2009. 1933 – Ex-reds outside-right Danny McRorie re-signed for Morton from Rochdale after playing five League games in just two months with the Dale. Keepers heading off 2020 - Kamil Grabara re-joined AGF Århus for a second loan spell, with Loris Karius moving to 1. FC Union Berlin for the season. Grabara played 35 times while in Denmark, with Karius appearing just five times. Wartime scorers 1940 - Denis Westcott nabbed his first reds goals, scoring both in our 2-0 win at Chester’s Moss Road Ground in a Wartime League game. 1918 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won a Wartime League game at Preston North End 2-0. Thomas Bennett netted the other goal. Ex-reds keepers in opposition 2003 - Two ex-reds custodians, David James and Tony Warner, played against each other as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Millwall in a First Division fixture at Upton Park. 2012 - David James signed for Bournemouth. He stayed until the following March, playing nineteen times for the Cherries. 2015 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux had his loan spell terminated by Swindon Town for paying a £50 fine in pennies, although he was reinstated after he apologised. Other reds games 1991 – Ray Houghton netted as Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. 1988 – Gary Gillespie bagged the only goal of Walsall’s visit in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie. We made it as far as the Fourth Round that season, before being knocked out at West Ham United. 1946 – We beat Leeds United 2-0 in L4, with Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys on target. Albert Stubbins then had a penalty saved. 1929 – We beat Grimsby Town 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson and Harry Race, with Billy Powell dismissed for the visitors. The King, the father 1975 – Future reds legend Kenny Dalglish became a father for the first time, to Kelly. Youngsters in action 2006 - Michael Collins netted for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s, playing alongside Laurence Gaughan and Shane O'Connor as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2012 – Brad Smith won his first cap for England Under-19’s in their 6-0 trouncing of the Faroe Islands in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. 2013 – Harry Wilson bagged a brace for Wales Under-17’s in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Slovenia in Slovakia. 1994 - Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Finland in a European Championships qualifier. 2016 – Rhian Brewster grabbed a treble for England Under-17’s as they thumped Croatia 5-0 in a friendly in Pula, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Meanwhile, future reds loanee Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Lithuania 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier, while fellow future red Dominik Szoboszlai captained Hungary at the same level in their 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein in Telki.
