Happy birthday Digger 1963 - John Barnes was born at Up Park in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Watford for £900,000 in June 1987, a transfer that had been heavily trailed for at least six months. Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he had arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, joining Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. He became a father for the seventh time on his 47th birthday. Anfield goalscoring feats 1992 - Ian Rush scored his 200th League goal, including fourteen for Chester. Jimmy Phillips scored the first Premier League penalty against the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-1. Ronnie Rosenthal grabbed a brace, with Steve McManaman also on target, while future reds bench-warmer Stephen Pears was in the visitors’ goal. Steve Nicol played his 400th game for the club. 1896 - Inside-left Davy Hannah bagged a top-flight treble as we beat Sunderland 3-0. A strong signing 1964 - Geoff Strong arrived from Arsenal for a club record £40,000 fee. He made 201 reds appearances, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. Beating the Blues 2010 – We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Premiership fixture at Anfield, thanks to a first-half Fernando Torres brace as Lucas dominated the midfield. 1981 - Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace in the space of six minutes with Ian Rush also striking as we beat Gordon Lee’s Everton 3-1 at Anfield, with the game goalless at half time. The Blues had Eamonn O’Keefe dismissed for a high, late challenge on Ronnie Whelan, with Mick Ferguson netting for the visitors. Farewell to Melwood 2020 – The reds trained at Melwood for the last time, ahead of the move to Kirkby. It had been the club’s training ground since the 1950’s. Three-ton Hendo 2021 - Jordan Henderson played his 300th League game for the reds as we lost 3-2 at West Ham United. Alisson Becker flapped at a cross to score an early own goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold levelling before the break. Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma both struck in the second half, before Divock Origi netted. More birthdays 1877 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry was born in Trefonen, Shropshire. He signed from Brighton United in August 1900, scoring four times in 221 reds games, moving on to Partick Thistle in May 1909, later spending time coaching back at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-right Don Woan was born in Liverpool. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. 1990 – Spanish centre-half Daniel Ayala was born in Seville. He signed from Sevilla for £160,000 in September 2007, making his senior debut as substitute in our 2-1 League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in August 2009, and his first start as we thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield three days later. He played five reds games in total before being sold to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011 after loan spells at Hull City and Derby County. Gloves on and off 1919 - Pre-war reds custodian Ned Doig died from Spanish flu. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. 1997 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Swindon Town on loan, where he made three first-team appearances. 1977 - Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances. Making their bow 1959 - Dave Hickson scored both goals on his reds debut, the day after his controversial move across Stanley Park, as we beat Second Division pace-setters Aston Villa 2-1, one of his former clubs, ending their run of fourteen games unbeaten. His arrival added an extra 15,000 to the usual gate, with one supporter running onto the pitch to kiss him on the cheek! Peter McParland struck for the Villains, doing so again in the away encounter later in the season. 1964 - Geoff Strong made his reds bow in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Fulham. Ian Callaghan netted our goal, with Johnny Haynes on target for the Cottagers. 1908 – Inside-left Bert Goode played the first of his seven reds games in our 1-0 First Division defeat at Bristol City, as Andy Burton struck one of his four goals against the reds, as well as missing a penalty. 1903 - Right-back Alf West debuted as we beat Notts County 2-1 in another top-flight fixture at Anfield thanks to half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes’ first reds strike and a Thomas Prescott own goal. Percy Humphreys netted one of his six goals past the reds. Beating Rovers 1904 - Jack Parkinson scored all our goals as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 5-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup tie at Anfield. 1931 – We won a top-flight meeting 4-2, thanks to a Harold Barton brace and goals from Gordon Gunson and Gordon Hodgson. King Kenny dismissed 1984 - Kenny Dalglish and SL Benfica’s Minervino Pietra were both sent off after a scuffle as we lost 1-0 in the Estádio da Luz with Bruce Grobbelaar conceding an early penalty, although we progressed to the Third Round of the European Cup 3-2 on aggregate as Mark Lawrenson reached 200 reds appearances. Also in Europe 1967 - We trounced German high-fliers TSV 1860 München 8-0 in a Fairs Cup Second Round tie at Anfield with Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan both netting twice. Hunt’s goals took him to 242 reds strikes, so beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record. The other goals came from a Tommy Smith penalty, Ian St. John, Tony Hateley and Peter Thompson. 1972 - Emlyn Hughes bagged a brace as we won 3-1 at AEK Athens although he handled to give away the penalty that the Greeks scored from. Phil Boersma added the final goal, one of four he scored in that season’s victorious UEFA Cup campaign. Derby disappointment 1998 - Jamie Redknapp grabbed our late consolation as we lost 2-1 at home to Derby County, Roy Evans’ last League game as joint Manager. Paulo Wanchope struck one of his four goals past us, with Kevin Harper also scoring for the visitors. 1970 - We also faced the Rams when we held them to a goalless draw at the Baseball Ground. First caps 1992 - Myllykosken Pallo-47’s Sami Hyypiä won his first full international cap as Finland drew 1-1 in a friendly in Tunisia. His clubmate Jari Litmanen also played, winning his 23rd cap. 2001 – Future red Glen Johnson made his debut for England Under-19’s as they beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in York, with future reds coach Gary O’Neil also in action. Harry for the League 1896 - Forward Harry Bradshaw represented the Football League as they beat an Irish League side 2-0. The reds beat Sunderland 3-0 in a top-flight meeting on the same day, thanks to a David Hannah brace and goal from Malcolm McVean. Done it again 1942 - Cyril Done scored in his eighth consecutive game as the reds beat Chester 4-2 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Billy Liddell also netted. Management moves 2002 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Italian Serie B side Calcio Catania. He stayed in the job for less than three months before resigning. 2011 – Dietmar Hamann resigned as Stockport County boss, after a failed takeover of the club. On the same day, Dave Watson was appointed Under-18's Coach at Newcastle United. Beginning and end 1918 – Forward Wilf Bartrop died in First World War action in Warcoing, Belgium. He arrived from Barnsley for £900 in May 1914, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. 1923 - Joe Keetley signed from Accrington Stanley for £1,200, netting twice in nine reds games before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1925. Other reds games 1953 – Louis Bimpson and Kevin Baron struck as Manchester City held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. 1936 – Berry Nieuwenhuys was on target early on as we lost 3-1 at Preston North End, despite leading at the break. Joe Beresford netted the last of his four goals against the reds before Hugh O’Donnell scored. Future red Willie Fagan was also on the scoresheet. 1914 – We shared a goalless draw with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. Also on the move 2001 - Julian Dicks signed for non-League Canvey Island, helping them to reach the FA Cup Third Round. 2014 – Ex-Academy midfielder Craig Roddan joined Accrington Stanley, although he managed only one FA Cup appearance in his two months with them. Diego at Melwood 2008 – Argentina boss Diego Maradona visited Melwood, with the reds players clamouring to meet the legendary former player. Also in international action 2014 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in the Victory Shield in Dungannon, with Adam Lewis and Okera Simmonds both featuring.

Hat-tricks all round 2002 - Michael Owen bagged a treble as we won 3-0 at Manchester City. It was our 400th Premier League match, and Steven Gerrard made his 150th reds appearance in the game. 1895 - George Allan scored four goals in our 5-1 Second Division defeat of Burslem Port Vale at Anfield, with David Hannah netting the other. Full-back Archie Goldie made his reds bow in this game. 2003 - Kevin Lisbie bagged a treble for Charlton Athletic as we lost 3-2 at The Valley, with Steven Gerrard playing his 200th reds game. Vladimír Šmicer scored and Michael Owen converted a penalty. Anfield debut 1884 - The first game at Anfield was played, when Everton beat Earlestown 5-0 in a friendly. ¡Feliz Cumpleaños! 1992 – Midfielder Luis Alberto was born in San José del Valle, Cádiz. He signed from Sevilla for £6.8m in June 2013, making twelve senior appearances in his first campaign before returning to his homeland on loan for the next two seasons, moving on to sold to S.S. Lazio for €4m in August 2016. 2003 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek was born in Wrocław. He joined the Academy in August 2020, signing pro terms the following July. European records 1976 - We registered our then record equal away win in Europe, thumping Northern Irish champions Crusaders 5-0 in our First Round match to go through 7-0 on aggregate, en route to our first European Cup win. David Johnson bagged a brace, to add to goals from Kevin Keegan, Terry McDermott and Steve Heighway, with four of our goals coming in the final nine minutes. Crusaders had been unfortunate enough to hit the woodwork twice before we had opened the scoring on the night. 1982 - Anfield witnessed its lowest ever European attendance of just 12,021 as we beat Dundalk 1-0 in our European Cup First Round second leg, to progress 5-1 on aggregate. Ronnie Whelan volleyed the only goal, just nine minutes from time to secure a joint club record 25th consecutive game unbeaten in all competitions. Terry McDermott was making his farewell reds appearance, and 329th in all. 1983 - Phil Neal missed his first game in seven years as Michael Robinson scored his first two reds goals as we beat Danes OB Odense 5-0 at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish also struck twice, to break Denis Law’s British record for most goals in the European Cup, reaching fifteen. Our other strike came from a Frank Clausen own goal. Captain Jocky 1985 - Alan Hansen was confirmed as club captain in place of Phil Neal, prior to our 4-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. Ian Rush and Mark Lawrenson both scored, before Jan Mølby added two penalties. Craig Johnston reached a century of League games for the reds. Off the mark 2020 – Diogo Jota scored his first reds goal late on as we beat Arsenal 3-1 behind closed doors at Anfield, despite falling behind to an Alexandre Lacazette goal. Sadio Mané equalised with Andy Robertson putting us in front at the break. Out with the old, in with the new 1957 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 326th and final reds game and full-back Tom McNulty making his 36th and last appearance as we were thumped 5-1 at Charlton Athletic, with Tony Rowley grabbing our consolation. Gerry Byrne made his reds bow in the same game, scoring an own goal. Bobby Ayre bagged a treble, with South African centre-forward Stuart Leary netting the last of his six strikes against the reds. Another legend passes on 1944 - Matt McQueen died. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times. He became a Director at the end of the First World War, and then managed the club for five years during the 1920’s, helping us to retain the League title in 1923. 1915 - Inside-right John Tosswill died in the Eastbourne Military Hospital after an illness, aged just 24. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913. Another win 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum bagged the only goal of our League visit to Sheffield United to secure our seventh straight League win from the start of the season. Another debutant 1912 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf made his reds bow as we lost 3-1 at West Bromwich Albion. Tom Miller grabbed our consolation. 1935 - We had a happier time against the Baggies, thumping them 5-0 at Anfield, with Lance Carr bagging a brace and Berry Nieuwenhuys, Gordon Hodgson and Fred Howe all on the scoresheet. Running riot at Molineux 1968 - We recorded our equal biggest win over Wolverhampton Wanderers as Roger Hunt, ex-Wolves star Alun Evans and Peter Thompson all netted braces in a 6-0 top-flight thumping. A derby win 1963 - Ian Callaghan netted twice as we beat Everton 2-1 at Anfield, with Roy Vernon bagging one of his six goals against the reds as Ron Yeats reached a century of reds appearances. Tons up 1974 - Phil Boersma played his hundredth reds game as we lost a First Division match 1-0 at Sheffield United, thanks to an Alan Woodward goal. 2021 – Jordan Henderson played his 400th reds game as we thumped Porto 5-1 in their Estádio do Dragão in a UEFA Champions League group encounter. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino struck twice each, with Sadio Mané also netting as future red Luis Díaz appeared for the home side. Also in Europe 2004 - We lost at Olympiacos in the Champions League group stage, despite the Greek outfit having Anastasious Pantos sent off late on. Ieroklis Stoltidis netted the only goal of the game. 2000 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Rapid Bucureşti to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 1-0 on aggregate, on our way to claiming the trophy for the third time. 2005 – Both sides drew blanks as Chelsea visited Anfield in our most recent European game on this day, a UEFA Champions League group game. 1966 - Ian St. John headed us into the lead before Ian Callaghan’s volley secured a 2-0 victory over Romanians Petrolul Ploieşti in the opening game of our European Cup campaign. Mixed fortunes against the Brummies and Rovers We have twice scored three against the Blues from Birmingham at Anfield, although one of these occasions ended in defeat. 1901 - We beat Small Heath, as they were then known, 3-1, with Sam Raybould on target twice and Tom Robertson converting a penalty while centre-half Alex Raisbeck reached a century of League outings for the reds. 1907 - Birmingham City left L4 with all the points having won 4-3. Arthur Goddard, Joe Hewitt and Robbie Robinson grabbed our goals. Arthur Mounteney struck two of his five goals past us, with Benny Green and Edmund Eyre also on target. We have met Blackburn Rovers three times in the Lancashire Senior Cup on this day in history. 1927 – We won a Second Round tie 4-3 at Anfield. Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Bill Devlin and Tommy Reid also on target. 1936 – We lost 2-1 at Ewood Park in the First Round, benefitting from an own goal. 1938 – We drew another First Round tie 4-4, with Stanley Eastham converting a penalty and Bill Kinghorn, John Browning and George Paterson also netting. Reserve birthdays 1964 - Reserves forward Paul Jewell was born in Liverpool. He never made our first-team, moving on to Wigan Athletic for £15,000 in December 1984. He also had a successful spell with Bradford City, before moving into management. 1981 - More recent second-string striker John Miles was born in Fazakerley. He too never broke through to the first eleven at Anfield but continued his career in the lower leagues. 1897 - Harry Beadles was born in Llanllwehaiarn, Newtown in Wales. He bagged six goals in eighteen games after signing on for free from Grayson’s FC in June 1921, but left three years later to join Cardiff City. Forwards on their way out 1999 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was sold to Fulham for £200,000. He netted six goals in 35 outings in two seasons at Craven Cottage, as his career wound to an end. 1983 - Reserves forward Mike Newell joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer, having failed to break into the first team at Anfield. He only lasted one month and three matches at Gresty Road, before moving to Wigan Athletic on another free transfer. 2013 – Nigel Clough was sacked as Manager of Derby County having been in charge since January 2009. 1933 – Ex-reds outside-right Danny McRorie re-signed for Morton from Rochdale after playing five League games in just two months with the Dale. Keepers heading off 2020 - Kamil Grabara re-joined AGF Århus for a second loan spell, with Loris Karius moving to 1. FC Union Berlin for the season. Grabara played 35 times while in Denmark, with Karius appearing just five times. Wartime scorers 1940 - Denis Westcott nabbed his first reds goals, scoring both in our 2-0 win at Chester’s Moss Road Ground in a Wartime League game. 1918 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won a Wartime League game at Preston North End 2-0. Thomas Bennett netted the other goal. Ex-reds keepers in opposition 2003 - Two ex-reds custodians, David James and Tony Warner, played against each other as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Millwall in a First Division fixture at Upton Park. 2012 - David James signed for Bournemouth. He stayed until the following March, playing nineteen times for the Cherries. 2015 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux had his loan spell terminated by Swindon Town for paying a £50 fine in pennies, although he was reinstated after he apologised. Other reds games 1991 – Ray Houghton netted as Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. 1988 – Gary Gillespie bagged the only goal of Walsall’s visit in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie. We made it as far as the Fourth Round that season, before being knocked out at West Ham United. 1946 – We beat Leeds United 2-0 in L4, with Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys on target. Albert Stubbins then had a penalty saved. 1929 – We beat Grimsby Town 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson and Harry Race, with Billy Powell dismissed for the visitors. The King, the father 1975 – Future reds legend Kenny Dalglish became a father for the first time, to Kelly. Youngsters in action 2006 - Michael Collins netted for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s, playing alongside Laurence Gaughan and Shane O'Connor as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2012 – Brad Smith won his first cap for England Under-19’s in their 6-0 trouncing of the Faroe Islands in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. 2013 – Harry Wilson bagged a brace for Wales Under-17’s in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Slovenia in Slovakia. 1994 - Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Finland in a European Championships qualifier. 2016 – Rhian Brewster grabbed a treble for England Under-17’s as they thumped Croatia 5-0 in a friendly in Pula, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Meanwhile, future reds loanee Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Lithuania 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier, while fellow future red Dominik Szoboszlai captained Hungary at the same level in their 3-0 victory over Liechtenstein in Telki.
