God’s treble 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged a hat-trick as we came from behind to beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield, in what was boss Roy Evans’ hundredth game in charge. Ian Wright had put the visitors ahead from the spot with one of his seven strikes against the reds. 2000 - We again faced the Gunners at home, with strikes from Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Nick Barmby and substitute Fowler giving us a comprehensive 4-0 win. A Milanese arrival 2001 - Milan Baroš officially completed his signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m. He grabbed a total of 27 goals in 108 reds games, helping us to claim the Worthington Cup in 2003 and the Champions League two years later before joining Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005. On the same day, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sent off as Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield. The Gunners went ahead through a Thierry Henry penalty, one of his nine strikes against us, and Freddie Ljungberg before Jari Litmanen pulled one back for the reds. Meanwhile, Harry Kewell signed for Leeds United. He went on to net 63 times in 242 games for the Yorkshire side before his switch to Anfield in July 2003. 2020 – Left-back Calum Scanlon signed from Birmingham City for £550,000. Nottingham wins 1905 - Joe Hewitt and Robbie Robinson were on the scoresheet as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. 1922 - Dick Forshaw struck a brace to give us a 3-1 win at their near-neighbours Nottingham Forest, with Dick Johnson also netting and Bobby Parker bagging the last of his eight goals past us. This was the first of three wins in four days as we went on to claim the title for the fourth time. More trebles 1899 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite scored a treble, his first goals for the club, as we beat Glossop 5-2 at Anfield, with inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scoring both our other goals and Lorenzo Evans netting twice for the visitors. This was our hundredth home League match. 1893 - Malcolm McVean bagged a hat-trick as we won a friendly 6-2 at Ardwick, who later became Manchester City. James Stott nabbed a brace with James McBride also on the scoresheet. No joy against the Geordies We have failed to win any of our three meetings with Newcastle United on this day in history. 1933 - Berry Nieuwenhuys bagged our consolation as we lost 2-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Richardson struck the first of his eight goals against the reds, with Ron Williams also on the scoresheet as left-half Jimmy McDougall played his 200th reds game. The other two games both ended in 1-1 draws at St. James’ Park. 1967 - Ian St. John netted. 1996 - Robbie Fowler was on target to ensure we stayed top of the table over Christmas. Alan Shearer had put the home side in front with one of his eight goals past us. Anfield wartime foursomes 1939 - Cyril Done scored four times as we beat New Brighton 6-2 in a Wartime League game, with Len Carney and Harry Eastham nabbing the others. 1916 - Thomas Bennett also netted four as we thumped Port Vale 5-1, with John Bamber also on target. Bert’s century 1961 – We lost a Second Division fixture 1-0 at Leeds United with keeper Bert Slater playing his hundredth reds game. Billy Bremner struck one of his five goals against the reds as we remained top of the table. Other home wins We have won two other First Division matches on this day in history. 1911 - Sam Gilligan bagged the only goal of our meeting with Oldham Athletic. 1972 - John Toshack struck twice without reply as we entertained Coventry City. 1944 - We also won a Wartime League meeting with Tranmere Rovers in L4, with Phil Taylor grabbing a brace and Cecil Baines also on the scoresheet in a 3-0 victory. Goalless 1989 - Manchester United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield, the last time we failed to score at home that season. Ray Houghton reached a century of reds appearances that day. Red departures 1979 - 1920’s forward Peter McKinney died. He only made three reds appearances, scoring once, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 2009 – Ex-reserves centre-back Godwin Antwi signed for Danish side Vejle Boldklub, having been released by the reds back six months earlier. Off on loan 2004 - Ex-reds loanee keeper Paul Jones signed for Watford on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played eleven times for the Hornets, including both legs of our Carling Cup Semi-final encounter in January 2005. 1994 - Ex-reds winger Jimmy Carter re-joined Second Division Oxford United on loan from Arsenal. He made four appearances in this spell. 1999 - Reserves striker Jon Newby joined Carlisle United on a temporary basis. He subsequently had further loan spells with Crewe Alexandra, Sheffield United and Bury as he failed to make the break-through at Anfield. Rafa dismissed 2010 – Ex-reds boss Rafael Benítez was sacked as Manager of Internazionale. He had led them to the Italian Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, but only twelve wins in his 25 games in charge overall. Best keepers 2007 - Pepe Reina was presented with the 2006/07 Player of the Year award from the Merseyside branch of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club. Dirk Kuyt finished in second place in the voting, with Peter Crouch in third. 2011 – Ex-reds keeper Nikolay Mihaylov was presented with Bulgarian Footballer of the Year award. He had signed from Levski Sofia in July 2007, but work permit problems meant that he spent his reds career on loan with Twente in the Netherlands before joining them permanently for €1.8m in February 2010. Other reds game 1950 – We were beaten 2-1 at Sunderland, with Jack Balmer on target. Dickie Davis netted one of his seven goals past us, with Willie Watson also on the scoresheet. On target 2015 – Bobby Duncan scored for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 4-3 to Turkey at St. George’s Park, with Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Paul Glatzel also featuring. Fernando’s happy day 1999 - Fernando Morientes married Vitoria in the San Juan de Los Reyes cathedral in Toledo. Also in international action 1998 – Ex-red Yossi Benayoun played as Israel beat FR Yugoslavia 2-0 in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. 2004 – Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos featured as Greece beat a Thessaloniki Selection 1-0 in a charity match. -
Last gasp drama on the road to Turkey 2004 - We reached the knock-out stage of the Champions League as we came from behind to beat Olympiacos 3-1 at Anfield in our final group game. Rivaldo was on target in the first half for the visitors, but Florent Sinama-Pongolle came on at half time to change the game, bagging an equaliser straight after the break, our 200th goal in Europe’s premier club competition. Neil Mellor put us one goal away from progress with ten minutes to go before Steven Gerrard struck the spectacular, decisive third. Births and death 1951 - Terry McDermott was born in Kirkby. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £175,000 in November 1974, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980, he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He netted on his 28th birthday as we won 3-1 at Aston Villa, with Ray Kennedy and Alan Hansen also on the scoresheet, with Brian Little bagging the home side’s consolation. 1994 – Raheem Sterling was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Queens Park Rangers for £0.5m in February 2010, notching 23 goals in 129 reds games before joining Manchester City for an initial £44m in July 2015. 1995 – Jordon Ibe was born in Bermondsey. He arrived from Wycombe Wanderers for a reported £750,000 in December 2011, notching four times in 58 reds games before moving to Bournemouth for a reported £15m in July 2016. 1923 - Scottish right-back Tom Robertson died. He signed from Stoke for £400 and played 47 times without notching, helping us to claim our first League title in 1901 before joining Southampton in May 1902, with whom he won the Southern League in two successive years. 1946 – Forward Jack Whitham was born in Burnley. He signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £57,000 in April 1970, bagging seven goals in eighteen outings before having his contract terminated by mutual consent in 1974. He then played for Cardiff City and Reading. Razor sheathed 1981 - Ray Kennedy played his 342nd and final domestic reds game as we beat Arsenal 3-0 in a League Cup Fourth Round replay at Anfield, with all three goals coming in extra time. Craig Johnston bagged his first reds goal on his 21st birthday before fellow birthday boy Terry McDermott converted a penalty, with Kenny Dalglish also on target. 1928 – Defender Bert Shears played his sixteenth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Sunderland, with Robert Done bagging our consolation and Gordon Hodgson reaching a century of reds games. Dave Halliday struck one of his thirteen goals against the reds, with Bob McKay also on target. Mo’s treble 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick as we thumped Bournemouth 4-0 at their Vitality Stadium, with skipper James Milner playing the 500th Premier League game of his career as we also benefited from a Steve Cook own goal. Stevie’s half century 2007 - Steven Gerrard scored his fiftieth Premiership goal as we lost 3-1 at Reading, our first League defeat of the season, with young centre-back Jack Hobbs making his only ever League start. The home side’s first goal from Stephen Hunt was the hundredth we had conceded in the League under the charge of Rafael Benítez. Kevin Doyle and James Harper also got on the scoresheet. Solitary strikes 1973 - Mick Lyons had a goal for the Blues ruled offside before Alan Waddle grabbed his only reds strike to hand us a 1-0 derby win at Goodison Park against an Everton side who were unbeaten in the League that season. We won despite the absence of John Toshack and Steve Heighway, with Kevin Keegan also having to go off injured. 1951 - Centre-half Laurie Hughes scored his only goal in 326 reds games as we drew 2-2 with Preston North End at Anfield. We had fallen 2-0 behind, through a Ray Lambert own goal and the first of Charlie Wayman’s six strikes past us, before Billy Liddell pulled a goal back. Hughes had gone up front after injuring his thigh and tapped in the equaliser after Preston’s keeper Jimmy Gooch had let a Bill Jones strike slip through his legs. Four for Chelsea 1934 - Dickie Spence scored all four Chelsea goals in their 4-1 defeat of the reds at Stamford Bridge, the first of his six goals against the reds. Forward Dave Wright netted our consolation, while right-back Tommy Cooper made his reds bow. In and out 1996 - Centre-half John Scales was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m. He had struck four times in 94 appearances after being signed by Roy Evans from Wimbledon for £3.5m in September 1994, before his career was affected by injury. 1899 – Inside-forward Charlie Satterthwaite signed from Burton Swifts. He bagged thirteen goals in 45 outings before moving to New Brompton in 1902 after helping us to claim the League title the year before. Two rangers off track 1993 - Queens Park Rangers had both Simon Barker and Les Ferdinand sent off in our 3-2 win at Anfield. John Barnes and Ian Rush added to Jan Mølby’s penalty. Ferdinand had netted one of his six goals against the reds, with Barker also on target for the visitors. Defeat in Europe 1998 - We lost 1-0 to Celta de Vigo at Anfield to bow out at the Third Round stage of the UEFA Cup 4-1 on aggregate. Mixed fortunes against the steel city boys We have twice faced Sheffield United on this day in history, without winning, although we have beaten their neighbours Wednesday, with all these games coming in the First Division. 1894 - We drew 2-2 on our first ever trip to Bramall Lane, with Tom Bradshaw bagging a brace and Harry Hammond netting twice for the home side. 1923 - United left Anfield with all the points, when Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw netted in our 3-2 defeat. Harry Johnson and Billy Gillespie each struck one of their seven goals against the reds, with Fred Tunstall bagging one of his eight past us. 1962 - Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at Hillsborough. Bennett yet again 1917 - Thomas Bennett scored all five goals as we thumped Rochdale 5-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Amazingly, this was the fifteenth consecutive game in which he had scored for the reds! A new management role 1998 - 1950’s reds wing-half Keith Burkinshaw was put in temporary charge of Aberdeen after Roy Aitken was sacked. He was unbeaten in four games but returned to a Director of Football role in the New Year, when Paul Hegarty was appointed. Deano moves into the sun 1998 - Dean Saunders joined SL Benfica from Sheffield United for £500,000. He spent one season at the Estádio da Luz, bagging five goals in seventeen League outings, before returning to England to join Bradford City. Sir Roger for England 1965 - Roger Hunt struck as England beat Spain 2-0 in a friendly in Madrid. Other reds games 2001 – Michael Owen and Patrik Berger netted as we beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield. 1956 – We lost a Second Division fixture 1-0 at Nottingham Forest. 1906 – Bobby Robinson was on target in our 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, but had to miss the second half due to concussion. Andy Burton struck the first two of his four goals against the reds after the break, with future red Sam Gilligan bagging the first of his five past us. 1900 – We beat Manchester City by the odd goal in seven at their old Hyde Road ground. Jack Cox, Andy McGuigan, Sam Raybould and Tommy Robertson were all on the scoresheet. Going through 2003 - Zak Whitbread featured as the USA Under-20’s reached the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates by defeating the Ivory Coast 2-0. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina beat Egypt 2-1 after extra time at the same stage of the competition. Ellison’s bow 2006 - Academy youngster James Ellison made his debut for England Under-16’s, playing alongside clubmate Sean Highdale in their 2-1 defeat of Scotland to clinch the Victory Shield in Sc***horpe. 2016 – Future reds reserves keeper Vítězslav Jaroš played for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they lost 3-2 to the Netherlands. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya represented England at the same level, winning his fifth and last cap as they drew 3-3 with Spain in Alicante. Good riddance 2010 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje was released. The Frenchman signed from Racing Club de Lens in August 2007, playing seven largely unconvincing games in his first season, being released from his contract in December 2010. -
A treble treble 1946 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick in our 4-2 First Division defeat of Arsenal at Anfield, including a penalty, as we came from 2-1 down to cement our place at the top of the table. This was his third treble in consecutive games, becoming the third player in top-flight history to achieve this. Albert Stubbins netted our other goal, with Reg Lewis bagging the first of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Logie also on target. 1988 - We also beat Arsenal 2-1 in the second replay of our League Cup Third Round tie at Villa Park, with Steve McMahon and John Aldridge both netting after Paul Merson put the Gunners ahead, the first of his seven strikes past us. However, we went out to West Ham United at the next hurdle. 3,500 up 1991 - We played our 3,500th League game, returning from Selhurst Park with a goalless draw against Wimbledon. 1996 - We faced the Dons again, being held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with future red Øyvind Leonhardsen netting for the visitors. Stan Collymore struck the fastest goal of the Premiership season after only 33 seconds. Steve McManaman was absent from the team sheet, missing out after appearing in 106 consecutive reds games. A reds first 1992 - We secured our first away win in the newly-formed Premier League, at the eighth attempt, as a last-minute Ronnie Rosenthal goal handed us a 1-0 win at Queens Park Rangers in a Monday night game live on Sky. John Barnes played his 200th reds game that night. Reds farewells 2000 - Steve Staunton played his 148th and final reds game, having been recalled from his loan spell with Crystal Palace. It came as we returned from a UEFA Cup Third Round first leg match at Greek champions Olympiacos with a 2-2 draw, having led for much of the game through goals from Nick Barmby and Steven Gerrard. Alekos Alexandris bagged a brace for the home side. On the same day, future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil. 1928 – Scottish half-back Neil McBain moved on to Watford. He played twelve times after signing from St. Johnstone for £1,000 in March 1928, later managing the Hornets and Ayr United as well as coaching in Argentina. A derby thriller 2013 – We were held to a 3-3 draw at Goodison Park, despite twice leading. Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring inside five minutes before Kevin Mirallas levelled for the Blues. Luis Suárez restored our lead with a free kick, but Joe Allen missed a golden opportunity to extend our lead before Romelu Lukaku struck two of his five goals past us to date to leave us on the verge of defeat. However, Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to nod in a late equaliser. 1986 – Our visit to Goodison Park ended goalless. 1908 – Bert Goode bagged a brace as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup game 2-0 across the park. 1938 – We drew 2-2 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round replay at Everton, with Cyril Done bagging a brace as even extra time could not separate the sides. Stumbling towards Istanbul 2004 - We lost at AS Monaco in the group stage of the Champions League, despite Javier Saviola handling before scoring the only goal of the game. Even worse news was the injuries to Luis García and Josemi, who came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced after suffering a horrific-looking head injury. This result left us needing a two-goal victory over Olympiacos in our final group game at Anfield. 2005 - We were held to a goalless draw at home by Real Betis Balompié in another group fixture. However, this was enough to ensure that we reached the knock-out phase. Darren Potter made his seventeenth and final reds outing in this match. Bob made free 1983 - Bob Paisley was made a Freeman of the city of Liverpool, five months after stepping down as reds boss. Facing the Eagles 2019 – We won 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after the break, with Wilfred Zaha netting a late equaliser. However, Roberto Firmino scored with just five minutes on the clock to secure victory. 2014 – Rickie Lambert opened the scoring with his first reds goal, but we succumbed 3-1 at Crystal Palace. Dwight Gayle equalised with the most recent of his four goals against us, with Joe Ledley and Mile Jedinak both on target late on to secure victory. Archie’s bow 1929 - Inside-left Archie McPherson made his reds debut as a Jim Smith goal in the first minute was enough to hand us victory over Leeds United in a First Division match at Anfield. Bill Murray played his fourth and final reds game. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs 1963 - Ron Yeats was on target for the reds for the first time, the only goal of the game at Old Trafford as we beat Manchester United. 1912 – Donald McKinlay nabbed our consolation in a 3-1 away defeat in another top-flight encounter, with Arthur Goddard missing a late penalty. George Anderson struck the first two of his four goals past us, with George Wall bagging one of his ten goals against the reds. 1940 - We were held to a 2-2 draw in our Wartime League meeting in L4, with George Hunt and Willie Fagan netting. Defeat at Loftus Road 2002 - We lost 3-2 to Fulham at Loftus Road. We went in at half-time 2-0 down before a Didi Hamann pile-driver brought us back into the game. Alain Goma’s late dismissal could not prevent us losing, with Milan Baroš netting a second consolation. Facundo Sava bagged a brace for the Cottagers, with Sean Davis nabbing the first of his three goals against the reds. Births and death 1937 - Jim Furnell was born in Clitheroe. He signed from Burnley for £18,000 in February 1962, taking over in goal during that promotion season. However, he broke his finger early the following campaign, losing his place to Tommy Lawrence. He made just 28 first-team appearances in total before moving to Arsenal in November 1963, being fondly remembered as Plymouth Argyle’s greatest ever custodian. 1998 – Irish keeper Caoimhin Kelleher was born in Cork. He kept ten clean sheets in 26 senior games as of his 25th birthday, being the spot-kick hero in the 2022 League Cup Final at Wembley. On the same day, midfielder Herbie Kane was born in Bristol. He made his senior debut on the same day as Kelleher, at Milton Keynes Dons in September 2019. However, he only played once more before being sold to Barnsley for £1.25m in October 2020. 1884- Outside-right Fred Staniforth was born in Kilnhurst, Yorkshire. He signed from Grimsby Town in May 1913, but only made three senior appearances before the war intervened. 2022 – Forward David Johnson died. The ex-Blue arrived from Ipswich Town in August 1976 for a club record £200,000 fee, and went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Michael Owen comes second 2001 - Michael Owen was named runner-up to Zinedine Zidane in French monthly magazine Onze Mondial’s annual award for the best player in the world. Bennett again 1918 - Forward Thomas Bennett scored in his third consecutive game as we beat Manchester City 2-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Harold Wadsworth netted the other. 1927 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup Semi-final 3-2 at Maine Road, with Gordon Hodgson and Bill Devlin on target for the reds. Wright wrong 2001 - Mark Wright was suspended as Oxford United Manager following allegations that he racially abused a referee. He resigned a week later. Markus in charge 2008 – Markus Babbel was appointed Manager of VfB Stuttgart, having previously been in the Assistant’s role. He led them to third in the table in his first season, and into the following campaign’s group stages of the Champions League, although he parted company with them in December 2009. In World Cup action 2022 – Future red Wataru Endō and ex-reds Dejan Lovren, Liam Millar and Takumi Minamino all featured in World Cup group games in Qatar. Japan beat Germany 2-1, with Croatia being held to a goalless draw by Morocco and Canada losing 1-0 to Belgium. Geoff’s century 1968 – Geoff Strong scored in his hundredth League appearance with Ian Callaghan also scoring in a 2-0 defeat of Coventry City in L4. Other reds games 1985 – Ian Rush and Paul Walsh netted as we won 2-0 at Birmingham City. 1974 – West Ham United held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Tommy Smith on target a minute after Pop Robson had scored the last of his five goals against the reds. 1957 – We beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 in a Second Division match at Anfield with Billy Liddell bagging a brace. 1935 – Derby County held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1907 – Ex-red Thomas Hunter and Harry Stringfellow scored for Preston North End as they went home having won 2-1, with Charlie Hewitt bagging our consolation. 1901 – We lost 1-0 at Newcastle United. 1895 – Darwen held us to a goalless draw in a Second Division fixture at Anfield as we remained top of the table. Out on loan 2006 - Young midfielder David Mannix joined Accrington Stanley on loan. However, a knee injury forced his early return after just one run-out. On the same day, Patrik Berger moved to Stoke City from Aston Villa on a temporary basis. He played seven times in the Potteries, returning to re-join the first team picture at Villa Park. Watson on the move 1994 - Ex-reserves defender Alex Watson joined Torquay United from Bournemouth for £50,000. He made more than two hundred appearances for the Gulls before moving on to Exeter City. Also in international action 2022 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Belgium in Spain. -
Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus! 1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. Foxes run off with the points again 1964 - Leicester City came out on top for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time winning 1-0, with Mike Stringfellow nabbing one of his five goals against the reds. 1962 - We also lost, going down 3-0 at Filbert Street. Beginnings and end 1955 - Richard Money was born in Lowestoft. The defender spent two years at Anfield after signing from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980 but was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 2002 – Midfielder Tom Hill was born in Formby. A black day for the club 1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şahin bagging the last of his three reds strikes and Leon Barnett deflecting a Steven Gerrard shot into his own net. Aldo’s treble 1987 - John Aldridge scored a hat-trick past Peter Shilton, including two penalties, in our 4-0 defeat of Derby County. Peter Beardsley bagged the other, while John Barnes had a goal disallowed for scoring direct from an apparently indirect free-kick as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th reds game. Rushie’s European record 1992 - Ian Rush scored his twentieth and final European goal, a then club record, in our 2-1 win at Apollon Limassol in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Don Hutchinson scored the second as we progressed 8-2 on aggregate. Paul Stewart was dismissed late on after a tangle with the Cypriot keeper Christophi. Moving on 1982 - Terry McDermott left the reds to re-join Newcastle United. He had struck 81 times in 329 reds games after signing from the Toon for £175,000 in November 1974, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980, he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. Red centuries 2013 – Jordan Henderson played his hundredth reds game as we won 3-1 at his former club Sunderland, our 400th Premier League victory. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring with Luis Suárez adding a brace. 2007 - Substitute Yossi Benayoun’s strike past ex-red Chris Kirkland at Wigan Athletic ensured that the reds reached 400 away points in the Premiership as we won 1-0. However, the match was somewhat marred by fighting in the home stands when some reds celebrated our winning goal in amongst Latics fans. 1984 – Bruce Grobbelaar played his 200th game for the reds as Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 at Anfield. Ex-Evertonian Imre Varadi and Gary Shelton grabbed the goals. A goalscoring debut 1951 - Centre-forward Jack Smith scored on his reds debut in our 2-0 First Division defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Bryan Williams netting his first goal for the club as Bob Paisley played his 200th reds game and Phil Taylor reaching 300 appearances. Another European first 1965 - We made our first appearance in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, going down 1-0 to a late Gianfranco Leoncini pile-driver at Juventus with the home side also having three penalty appeals turned down. We won the second leg 2-0 and went on to reach the final. More European adventures 1970 - Emlyn Hughes struck a 25-yard equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Hungarian side Ferencvárosi in a Fairs Cup match, to go through to the Second Round 2-1 on aggregate. 1971 - Crazy Horse netted again as we beat Servette FC Genève 2-0 at Anfield, the first Swiss visitors to Anfield, with Steve Heighway also scoring, to reach the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. 1998 - Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace as we beat Kosice 5-0 in Slovakia to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 8-0 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler also netted twice, having previously missed a penalty, while Paul Ince was also on target with Patrik Berger and Michael Owen both hitting the woodwork. Marek Spilar was dismissed for the home side after an hour for yet another clumsy challenge on Owen. 2009 – We lost our Champions League group game 2-0 at Fiorentina, with Stevan Jovetić netting both goals, the first of his four goals past us to date. 1,500 at the City Ground 1979 - We played our 1,500th away League game, going down 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, with Garry Birtles netting. He signed from Leeds United for £5m in July 2003, but his time at Anfield was somewhat disappointing due to a series of niggling injuries, as he bagged sixteen goals in 139 reds games before moving to Galatasaray as his contract expired in July 2008. Unfortunately, we lost our next game, an EFL Cup Third Round tie at home to Chelsea. 2019 – We won 2-1 at Chelsea with Trent Alexander-Arnold opening the scoring with a fabulous free-kick, with the home side having a goal ruled out for offside by VAR before Roberto Firmino doubled our lead after half an hour. N’Golo Kanté pulled a goal back after the break, but we held on to secure maximum points from our opening six League games. Graduating to the first team 1970 - The reds included two university graduates in their ranks for the first time, as Brian Hall and Steve Heighway both featured against Third Division Mansfield Town in a League Cup Second Round replay at Anfield. Joe Fagan’s son, right-back Kit, made his reds debut as a late substitute for Heighway. However, he only ever made one more senior appearance. Jimmy Sutton gave the visitors a shock lead from thirty yards inside two minutes. Emlyn Hughes equalised before John Stenson headed the visitors back in front. Tommy Smith netted a penalty to take the match into extra time, with Alun Evans grabbing the winner as we won 3-2. Unfortunately, we were knocked out at Swindon Town at the next hurdle. Ben Doak was on target on his debut for Scotland Under-21’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of Northern Ireland in Belfast, while ex-red Rhian Brewster bagged his last two goals at this level including a penalty as England Under-21’s won a friendly 2-0 in Italy, with Harvey Elliott also featuring. On the same day, Neco Williams won his first cap since moving to Nottingham Forest as Wales lost 2-1 to Belgium in the Nations League in Brussels. International finales 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his seventh and last Under-19's cap as Norway beat Poland 3-1 in Aberdeen. 1997 – Future red John Arne Riise won his only cap at Under-17’s level as Norway lost 3-2 to Italy. Mixed fortunes against the Villains 1997 - Robbie Fowler converted a spot-kick in front of the live TV cameras, with first-time skipper Steve McManaman and Karl-Heinz Riedle also on target as we beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield. 1951 - We lost 2-0 at Villa Park in another top-flight encounter back. A double treble 1917 - Thomas Bennett and Harry Lewis both bagged hat-tricks as we thumped Bolton Wanderers 6-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. He did not make a first-team appearance for the Owls. 2020 – Ex-reds winger Jordon Ibe signed for Derby County, having been released by Bournemouth the previous June. He only made one senior appearance before his contract was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of the season. On the same day, midfielder Luca Stephenson signed as a professional with the reds. In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. More recent reds firsts 2021 – Joe Gomez skippered the reds for the first time as we won a League Cup Third Round tie 3-0 on our way to claiming the trophy for the ninth time. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. International bows 1993 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his first cap as a reds player as Norway thumped Qatar 6-1 in a friendly in Doha. Future clubmate Øyvind Leonhardsen also played with Steve McManaman also in international action. 2004 – Future red James Milner made the first of his record 46 appearances for England Under-21’s, his only one while with Leeds United, as they drew 2-2 with Sweden in a friendly in Kristianstad. Future red David Martin made his debut for England Under-19’s in their 1-1 draw in Germany. Robbie Foy, David Raven, Mark Smyth, future reds Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Raul Meireles and Daniel Sjölund also featured for their countries. Eight goal thriller 1960 - We led Aston Villa 4-0 with just 24 minutes remaining of our Second Division fixture at Villa Park thanks to a brace from Dave Hickson and goals from Roger Hunt and right-back John Molyneux, his third and last reds goal. However, the home side struck three times inside nine minutes, and Bobby Thomson grabbed his second goal to equalise with five minutes remaining. Peter McParland, who had already scored, as in the earlier meeting at Anfield that season, missed a clear-cut chance in the last minute that nearly completed an amazing comeback for the Villains, who went on to claim the title that season. Villa’s other goal came from Stan Lynn’s spot-kick. 1907 - We were thumped 4-0 in another top-flight meeting there, with four first-team regulars missing. Red ending 1895 – Outside-right Neil Kerr played his twelfth and final reds game as we beat The Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield, with Frank Becton and Harry Bradshaw each bagging a brace. Signing on 2011 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva signed a new contract until 2015, later further extended. He bagged seven goals in 346 reds games, growing to become a firm fans’ favourite before being sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m in July 2017. 1898 – Winger Tommy Robertson and inside-right Johnny Walker both arrived from Heart Of Midlothian for a combined £175. They both helped us to claim our first League title in 1901, with Robertson netting 35 times in 141 games before returning to Hearts in May 1902. Walker scored thirty goals in 120 outings, moving on to Rangers at the same time as Robertson’s departure. Meanwhile, Jan Kromkamp won his fourth and last cap as an AZ Alkmaar player as the Netherlands beat Armenia 2-0 in Eindhoven, with future reds Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt also featuring. On the same day, Craig Bellamy won his last cap as a Newcastle United player, and 33rd to date, although he was on loan at Celtic at the time, as John Toshack’s Wales lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Austria. A reds stalwart passes on 2004 - Geoff Twentyman died in a Southport hospital after a long illness. He played 184 times at left-half after signing from Carlisle United for £10,000 in December 1953, bagging nineteen goals. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a position he held for nineteen years. Among the players he recommended to the club were Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and John Toshack. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia in their 5-2 friendly defeat in Malta. Happy birthday Rickie 1982 - Rickie Lambert was born in Kirkby. The boyhood red signed from Southampton for £4m in June 2014, netting three times in 36 games before moving on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. Harry’s farewell 2008 - Harry Kewell played his 139th and final reds game as we were dumped out of the FA Cup by Barnsley, coming off the bench to replace Ryan Babel. Dirk Kuyt gave us the lead but the Tykes hit back through Stephen Foster’s header, with the reds missing a host of good chances before a late, late Brian Howard strike consigned us to a 2-1 Fifth Round defeat at Anfield. Reds debutants 1992 - Hungarian István Kozma made his reds debut as a substitute for Jamie Redknapp in a goalless FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Ipswich Town. Jack Balmer scored the fastest derby goal in history, inside the first fifteen seconds, with John Shafto adding a brace in the final ten minutes, the last of his seven reds strikes. Half ton for Al 2021 – Alisson Becker kept his fiftieth clean sheet in his 114th game for the reds as we beat RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. 2-0 behind closed doors in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in Budapest. We were later denied a second blatant penalty claim as the home side went on to lift the trophy for the eleventh time later that year. Other cup wins 2022 – Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah struck after the break as we won the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie 2-0 at Internazionale, on our way to the Final in Paris. 1980 – We won an FA Cup Fifth Round tie with Bury 2-0 at Anfield with both goals coming from substitute David Fairclough. Keith Kennedy lined up against his brother Alan for the first time in this game. Unfortunately, we fell at the Semi-final to Arsenal, after four matches. 1898 - Our other FA Cup win on this day in history saw us come from behind to beat Newton Heath, who later became Manchester United, 2-1 in a Second Round replay thanks to left-back Billy Dunlop’s first reds goal and forward Dan Cunliffe’s sixth and final reds goal. First defeat 1895 - We suffered our first Anfield defeat in the FA Cup, in our fifth home fixture in this competition. Nottingham Forest won 2-0 in this Second Round tie. Five for Thomas 1918 - Thomas Bennett struck five goals, scoring in his third consecutive game as we trounced Burnley 7-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League game. Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game, while Arthur Metcalf was also on the scoresheet. Young champions 2010 – England Under-17’s won the Algarve Tournament after holding Portugal to a goalless draw. Conor Coady skippered the side, with Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom and future red Conor Thomas also playing. A century on the south coast 2000 - We took part in a friendly at Bournemouth to commemorate the Cherries’ centenary year. Richie Partridge, Patrik Berger, Danny Murphy and Titi Camara all netted in our 4-0 win at Dean Court. On the same day, Brad Friedel played for the USA as they beat Peru 1-0 in a Gold Cup game in Miami. Internationals on target 1972 - Future red Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace at the Baseball Ground for Scotland Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with an England side that included Kevin Keegan, who was making his debut at this level. 2015 – Future red Diogo Jota scored for Portugal Under-19’s as they beat Norway 4-0 in a friendly in Spain. On our way to Wembley 1981 - We reached our second League Cup Final as a Kenny Dalglish goal was enough to secure a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at Anfield despite an equaliser from Kevin Reeves, one of his four goals past us, to ensure we progressed 2-1 on aggregate. Many happy returns 1964 - Mike Hooper was born in Bristol. He signed from Wrexham for £40,000 in October 1985 but spent most of his Anfield career as understudy to first Bruce Grobbelaar and then David James, although he managed to make 73 first-team appearances. 1977 - Salif Diao was born in Kedogou Tallie, Senegal. He arrived at Anfield for £4.7m from Sedan in August 2002, and bagged three goals in 61 reds games, nearly half of them from the bench, and joined Stoke City permanently in January 2007 after spending most of that season on loan at the Britannia Stadium. 1910 - Inside-left Archie McPherson was born in Alva, Clackmannanshire. He signed from Rangers in November 1929 and bagged nineteen goals in 133 reds games as we endured a barren spell. He moved on to Sheffield United in December 1934, appearing for the Blades in the FA Cup Final as they lost to Arsenal at Wembley in 1936. 1995 – Midfielder Naby Keïta was born in Conakry in Guinea. In August 2017 he agreed to sign from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. the following July for £52.75m. He notched eleven times in 129 games, helping us to claim the League title, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup as well as suffering from a succession of injuries, before moving on to SV Werder Bremen in June 2023. Sir Roger’s treble We have won only four of our fifteen games on this day over the years. 1962 - Our most recent victory on this day came when Roger Hunt netted all our goals in a 3-0 Second Division win at Bury, Bill Shankly’s hundredth game in charge. Mixed African fortunes 2013 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses was on the winning side as Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the African Cup of Nations Final in Johannesburg. Future red Joe Gomez featured for England Under-17’s on the same day. 2006 – Future red Kolo Touré converted for the Ivory Coast as they lost a penalty shoot-out to Egypt in the Final in Cairo after the game ended goalless. 2002 - Future red Salif Diao played in the African Cup of Nations Final for Senegal on his 25th birthday alongside fellow future red El-Hadji Diouf. Ex-red Rigobert Song’s Cameroon won a penalty shoot-out that followed the goalless two hours of normal play in Bamako, with Diouf and Song both failing to convert their kicks. 2000 - Song also featured in the competition, helping his country to a 3-0 win over Tunisia in Ghana in the Semi-final. 2008 - Song skippered his country in the same tournament as they lost the Final 1-0 to Egypt in Accra. King Kenny replaces Digger 2000 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Caretaker Manager of Celtic, with John Barnes and Chief Scout Terry McDermott both dismissed. King Kenny led them to ten wins in his eighteen games in charge, as they finished 21 points adrift of Rangers, although they won the League Cup under his stewardship. Martin O’Neill was appointed that June. European stalemate 1965 - We faced West German champions 1. FC Köln at their Müngersdorfer Stadion in the Second Round of the European Cup. The game ended without score, although they had a goal disallowed for offside. The tie was eventually decided on a coin toss in our favour after three drawn matches. Derby joy 1945 - We beat Everton 3-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Horace Cumner netting a brace and Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet. 1934 - We held them to a goalless draw across the park in a top-flight meeting. Debuting between the sticks 1912 - Keeper Ken Campbell made his reds debut in a 1-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers. He donned the gloves 142 times, before his place was taken by Elisha Scott. A rare reverse 1973 - Arsenal’s 2-0 win was our only home League defeat of the season, as we went on to claim our eighth League title. It was also one of just eleven League defeats at Anfield during the whole of the 1970’s, although three of these came at the hands of the Gunners. Alec Lindsay conceded a penalty that was converted by ex-Blue Alan Ball, one of his eleven goals past us, with John Radford netting one of his seven strikes against the reds as we were knocked off the top of the table by our visitors. 2010 – We lost 1-0 at Arsenal, with Jamie Carragher’s injury helping the Gunners to find the space to score through Abou Diaby’s header. We were then denied a very late penalty when Cesc Fàbregas handled a Steven Gerrard free-kick inside the area. On the move 1928 – Forward Harry Race signed from Raby United, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000. 1904 - Joe Hewitt arrived from Sunderland for £150, becoming top scorer as we won the title for the second time in 1906, netting a total of 74 goals in 164 reds games. Reds galore 1952 - Our record home attendance was set, as 61,905 crammed into Anfield to watch us beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Bob Paisley and Cyril Done were on target inside the first nine minutes that day. Unfortunately, we went out at Burnley in the next round. Most recently 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion, with future Baggie Daniel Sturridge putting the reds in front. A wayward pass from Kolo Touré handed ex-Blue Victor Anichebe a golden opportunity to equalise that he capitalised on. Pepe sets a record 2008 - Pepe Reina kept his fiftieth clean sheet in the League, in his 92nd game, to set a new club record as we beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield. Peter Crouch and Fernando Torres struck before Steven Gerrard converted a late penalty. On the same day, future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to England in the Algarve Tournament. Taki off 2021 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino joined Southampton on loan for the rest of the season, netting twice in ten outings before returning to Anfield. Two defenders depart 2004 - Jon Otsemobor joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He had made five starts for the reds that season, but only appeared once while at the Reebok Stadium, a 3-1 defeat by Manchester City. He moved on to League One strugglers Rotherham United in the summer. On the same day, Abel Xavier’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent. The Portuguese defender then joined mid-table German Bundesliga side Hannover 96. Double century 2003 - We secured our 200th Premiership win. A Milan Baroš header and a Steven Gerrard thunderbolt give us an early cushion at West Ham United. A late Emile Heskey goal, his third header in as many League games, wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 win over the Hammers, who were relegated at the end of the season. Larry’s farewell 1974 - Larry Lloyd played his 218th and final reds game as substitute Peter Cormack struck the only goal of the game in the last minute against Norwich City at Anfield. He moved to Coventry City that summer, before joining Nottingham Forest. On our way to Wembley 1982 - We edged towards our second consecutive League Cup Final as Terry McDermott and Ian Rush both struck in the first four minutes of the second half in a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town in our Semi-final first leg. We drew the return to reach the Final 4-2 on aggregate. This was the first of three consecutive matches in which we faced the Tractor Boys. When is a win not a win 1895 - We won our First Round FA Cup match with Barnsley St. Peters 2-1 in wintry conditions, after extra time, thanks to goals from Malcolm McVean and Jimmy Ross. However, a replay was ordered following a protest as the home side had not agreed to the extra period decided upon by the referee. Happily, we also won this second meeting, this time 4-0 at Anfield. However, we went out to Nottingham Forest at the next stage. Jimmy’s hat-trick 1924 - Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh grabbed a treble as we came from behind to win an FA Cup Second Round tie 4-1 at holders Bolton Wanderers. Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also notched as we progressed as far as the Fourth Round that season before being knocked out by Newcastle United. John Smith struck one of his seven goals against the reds. Arthur on target again 1918 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf struck for the third consecutive reds game as we thumped Southport Central 6-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Harry Lewis and Thomas Bennett both netted braces with our other goal coming from Donald McKinlay. Shanks off the mark 1938 - Bill Shankly scored his first League goal for Preston North End as they came from two goals down to hold us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield as we suffered our fourth draw in our last five League games. Jack Balmer netted for the reds, with Willie Fagan scoring from the spot and Bud Maxwell nabbing the last of his seven strikes past us. Births and death 1997 – Spanish winger Sergi Canós was born in Nules. He arrived from Barcelona in the summer of 2013. He failed to break into the first team, moving on to Norwich City for an initial £2.5m in July 2016. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was born in Dublin. He signed from Home Farm for £20,000 in August 1983 but only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, moving on to Preston North End in November 1987. 1874 - Full-back John Stephenson was born in Leigh-on-Sea. He played for our second string in the Lancashire Combination, without ever making our first-team. He later played for Gainsborough Trinity, Swindon Town and Tottenham Hotspur, and sadly died aged just 34 following a bout of pneumonia. 1990 - Don Welsh died. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and later took charge at Anfield for 232 games over five years during the 1950’s. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. Liddell at the double 1946 - Billy Liddell bagged a brace as Scotland beat Ireland 3-2 in a Victory International at Windsor Park. Others out on loan 2015 – Winger Sheyi Ojo moved to Wigan Athletic, playing eleven games for the Latics. On the same day, ex-red Tom Ince joined Derby County on loan from Hull City, moving there permanently five months later for £4.75m after eleven goals in eighteen outings for the Rams. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven joined Celtic from Dundee United for £250,000, centre-half Gabriel Paletta was sold to AC Milan from Parma for €2.5m and Mohamed Salah joined Fiorentina on loan from Chelsea, bagging nine goals in 26 games for La Viola. 2009 – Reserves keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Hereford United on loan, while second string winger Adam Hammill moved to Barnsley on a temporary basis. The young stopper played eighteen League One games for the Bulls, while Hammill struck once in fourteen outings before making the move permanent in August 2009. Ex-red Liam Millar featured for Canada as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in El Salvador on the same day. Also in African action 2004 - Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf faced future red Momo Sissoko in the African Cup of Nations Finals as Senegal and Mali shared two goals in a group fixture in Tunis. Diao and Sissoko were both booked. 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko played as Mali beat host nation 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Quarter-Final meeting in Durban. Barclay resigns 1892 – William Barclay’s resignation as Vice Chairman of Everton was accepted. He tendered it four days earlier after John Houlding had asked the Blues to quit Anfield. He later worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the reds’ existence. Souey sacked 2006 - Graeme Souness was sacked as Manager of Newcastle United, after just 36 wins in 83 games. He had taken charge after the dismissal of Sir Bobby Robson in September 2004. Fabs comes to Europe 2001 - Left-back Fábio Aurélio signed for Valencia from São Paulo. He struck eleven times in 81 outings and helped them to claim La Liga before following Rafael Benítez to Anfield in July 2006. Other reds games 1985 – Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough, with Mark Lawrenson grabbing a late equaliser. 1957 – Alan A’Court was on target as we lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough in a Second Division encounter. 1907 – Bill McPherson netted the only goal of our FA Cup Second Round tie at Oldham Athletic. We were knocked out at The Wednesday in the Fourth Round that season. Don for the Scots 1994 - Reds midfielder Don Hutchison played his only game for Scotland B as they lost 2-1 to the Welsh B side at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham. Youngsters in action 2017 – Future red Ryan Gravenberch played for the Dutch Under-15’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland. 2009 - Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they lost 2-0 to Brazil in a final phase game at the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Ronald Huth was cautioned as Paraguay beat the host nation 3-0 in the same competition. 2000 - Haukur Ingi Guðnason and future red John Arne Riise both featured in Nordic Cup games in La Manga. -
Farewell Crazy Horse 2004 - Red legend Emlyn Hughes died aged 57. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. More legendary farewells 1985 - Phil Neal played his 650th and final reds game, coming on for Steve McMahon as we won a First Division match 3-0 at Coventry City to close the gap on Manchester United at the top of the table. Jim Beglin bagged his third and final reds goal, with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush also netting that day. 1935 – Gordon Hodgson netted his 241st and last reds goal in our 3-2 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield. Management moves 1990 - Mark Lawrenson was sacked as Manager of basement club Peterborough United after thirteen months in charge. He was replaced by Dave Booth, who immediately led them to promotion. 2017 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was named Head Coach of New England Revolution. On the same day, future red Xherdan Shaqiri played in a World Cup play-off as Switzerland won 1-0 in Northern Ireland. Happy birthdays 1965 - Short-lived reds winger Jimmy Carter was born in Hammersmith. He spent just nine months at Anfield after signing from Millwall for £800,000 in January 1991, making only eight appearances before leaving for Arsenal at a loss of £300,000. 1904 – Bill Murray was born in Alexandria in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. He signed from Clydebank in November 1927, netting once in four senior outings before joining Third Division North side Barrow in January 1930, becoming their captain. 1886 - Forward Joseph Brough was born in Burslem. An Arsenal treble 1974 - Arsenal won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, this time 3-1. Ex-Gunner Ray Kennedy netted our consolation as they completed three of just eleven home League defeats we suffered throughout the whole of the 1970’s. Alan Ball struck two of his eleven goals past us, with Liam Brady also on the scoresheet. 1988 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless draw in a League Cup Third Round replay at Highbury. Larry fought the law 1972 - Larry Lloyd became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal. He was appealing his dismissal in the 2-0 win over Manchester City back in August. Thumping the Cottagers 2013 – We beat Fulham 4-0 at Anfield in a League encounter, with Fernando Amorebieta heading through his own net before Martin Škrtel doubled our lead. Luis Suárez then struck either side of the break. Brucie besmirched 1994 - A certain national rag printed allegations that Bruce Grobbelaar had accepted bribes to throw games. He eventually successfully sued. Also recently 2009 – We drew with Birmingham City for the fifth consecutive time in the League, this time 2-2 at Anfield. David N’Gog put us in front but we went in 2-1 down at the break, thanks to a goal from Christian Benítez and a stunning long-range strike by Cameron Jerome. Steven Gerrard handed us a share of the spoils from the spot after N’Gog’s controversial fall in the area. Red centurions 2002 - We conceded our 200th goal under Gérard Houllier’s sole charge as Jerzy Dudek dropped the ball at Middlesbrough to enable Gareth Southgate to score. This began our atrocious run that winter. 1912 - We also faced Boro with Arthur Metcalf netting a brace in our 4-3 win at Ayresome Park. Tom Miller and Jack Parkinson were also on target. Jackie Carr scored the first of his five goals against the reds, with George Elliott netting one of his eight and future red Jimmy Nicholl also scoring. 1966 – Full-back Chris Lawler scored as he reached a century of League games for the reds in our 2-0 defeat of Burnley at Anfield, with Peter Thompson also on target. Disappointment against the Mancs 2003 - Manchester United won 2-1 at Anfield with Harry Kewell bagging our consolation following a Ryan Giggs brace, two of his five goals against the reds. Beating the Blues 1994 - We came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 at Anfield with Neil Ruddock adding to a Robbie Fowler brace. John Spencer scored the first of his three goals against the reds. 1968 - We also beat them in a home top-flight fixture as Ian Callaghan netted in a 2-1 win, with Tommy Smith scoring from the spot. Alan Birchenall netted one of his four strikes past the reds. A European win 2000 - We won 3-2 at Slovan Liberec to reach the Third Round of the UEFA Cup 4-2 on aggregate. We fell behind on the night before Nick Barmby, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen struck, with Heskey also striking an upright. Owen netted just 21 seconds after coming on for Dietmar Hamann. Deano for Wales again 1996 - Ex-red Dean Saunders struck in his third consecutive game for Wales as they were thumped 7-1 by the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier in Eindhoven. Future reds Markus Babbel and Paul Ince were both also in World Cup action that day. French on target 2005 - Djibril Cissé scored in France’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Costa Rica in Martinique with ex-red Alou Diarra also in the side, while Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player, bagging his only goal while playing in Turkey. 2016 – Dominic Solanke netted for England Under-20’s as they thumped Nigeria 8-1 in South Korea. Another thumping win 1918 - We beat Port Vale 4-0 in a home Wartime League meeting thanks to goals from Thomas Green, Thomas Bennett and a Harold Wadsworth brace. On the move 1999 - Ex-red Gareth Roberts joined Tranmere Rovers from Greek side Panionos on a free transfer after a loan spell. He scored fourteen times in 337 games for Rovers in total, moving on to League One outfit Doncaster Rovers in July 2006. 2001 - Alan Navarro moved to Prenton Park on loan. He struck twice in four games before signing permanently the following January. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was sold to Preston North End. He ended his career back at SK Slavia Praha, his first club. Award winners 2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named as the Northwest Football Awards' Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us to the League title. Happy birthdays 1930 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman was born in Brampton. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games after signing for £10,000 from his hometown club Carlisle United in December 1953. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. 1969 - Steve Staunton was born in Drogheda. He arrived from Dundalk for £20,000 in September 1986, netting seven times in 148 reds appearances across his two spells at Anfield, helping us to our last League title in 1990, and the FA Cup a year earlier. 1913 – Irish reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney was born in Mullinavat, County Kilkenny. He was on our books in 1933 but failed to break through to the first team. He later turned out for Bristol Rovers and Ipswich Town, as well as representing his country. 1993 – Reserves forward Krisztián Adorján was born in Budapest. He arrived from MTK Hungária in the summer of 2009, moving on to Italian side Novara Calcio in September 2014 after failing to make the first team. Daniel once more 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored his third consecutive reds game as we thumped Norwich City 5-0 at Anfield, becoming the first red to do so in his first three games since Ray Kennedy in September 1974. Jordan Henderson, Luis Suárez and Steven Gerrard also netted, with Ryan Bennett putting through his own net. Milly off 2019 – James Milner was dismissed late on as we came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 4-3 at Anfield as Andros Townsend handed the Eagles a half-time lead. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with Roberto Firmino also on target and James Tomkins heading in for the visitors. Sadio Mané scored in injury time before Max Meyer bagged a final consolation. Rafael Camacho came off the bench for his second and final reds appearance. God’s despair 1994 - Robbie Fowler broke his ankle as we drew 1-1 in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie at Bristol City, and we lost the Anfield replay six days later. Ian Rush netted our goal at Ashton Gate. Jack’s treble 1907 - Jack Parkinson scored a hat-trick at Sunderland, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox also on the scoresheet for the reds. Sunderland came back from 4-1 down at half-time to draw the game 5-5 as Arthur Hurdman nabbed a brace, with George Bridgett scoring one of his five goals past us. The reds felt hard done by as the referee, a last-minute replacement when the original official was caught up in fog on the way to the match, awarded the home side two penalties, both converted by Ernie Rhodes, one of which was a controversial award. Derby disappointment 2009 – Steven Gerrard skippered the club for the 250th time as we were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Everton, netting a 25-yard strike before Tim Cahill headed in a late equaliser from a free-kick, one of his five goals against the reds. We had previously been denied a clear penalty for a Phil Jagielka foul on Fernando Torres in the box. 1901 – The Blues left Anfield with a 2-1 victory, with Jack Cox netting our goal. Despite this we went on to claim our first League title. Jack Taylor netted two of his five goals against the reds. New contract for Sami 2002 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new contract to tie him to the reds until 2005. He signed two further extensions and made 464 reds appearances in total, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer. Thumping the Canaries 1985 - Goals from John Wark, Kenny Dalglish and an Ian Rush brace sent Norwich City to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield. City went on to be relegated that season. Neil on the move 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Wigan Athletic on loan after six goals in 22 reds games. He struck in the last minutes of his debut to hand the Latics a 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough, failing to score again as he played another four times. On the same day, ex-red David Thompson also moved to the JJB Stadium on a short-term contract from Blackburn Rovers, also netting on his debut in the same game. He turned out just nine more times for the Latics, joining Portsmouth in July 2006. Meanwhile, Jon Otsemobor joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer from Rotherham United on the same day. He made exactly half a century of senior appearances for the Alex before joining Norwich City in June 2007. Beginning and ends 1924 - Forward Hector Lawson made his reds debut as we beat Manchester City on our first trip to their new Maine Road ground, with Harry Chambers bagging the only goal of the game. 1929 – We went down 2-0 at Leicester City, with Ernie Hine netting two of his ten goals past us as centre-forward Tommy Reid played his 55th and final reds outing. 1957 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle died. He joined the reds from Clyde in May 1899, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse a year later. 1982 – David Johnson netted his 78th and last reds goal as we won 3-1 at Barnsley in a Milk Cup Fifth Round replay. Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish were also on target. Another red Jones 1989 - Defender and apprentice decorator Barry Jones signed from his hometown club Prescot Cables for a £500 donation. He only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland in October 1991. Beating the Mancs 2020 – We beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield to extend our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points, with a game in hand. Virgil van Dijk headed in after a quarter of an hour, with Mohamed Salah finally making the victory secure with a breakaway stoppage-time strike. Cue, “and now you’re gonna believe us, we’re gonna win the League” from the Kop. 1918 - We trounced United 5-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Arthur Metcalf and Thomas Bennett both bagged braces, with Donald McKinlay also on the scoresheet. Disappointment against the Potters We have twice visited Stoke City on this day in history, without securing a victory. 1957 - We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 as they completed their second and most recent League double over us, with Harry Oscroft bagging his sixth and last goal against us. 1974 - Tommy Smith was on target in the last minute as we drew our top-flight match. Kevin Keegan had had a goal disallowed when the ball struck the arm of the grounded Alec Lindsay on the way into the net. Geoff Hurst scored for the Potters, the last of his nine strikes past us. Peake’s last cap 1914 - Ernest Peake won his tenth and final cap for Wales as they lost 2-1 to Ireland in Wrexham in the British International Championships. Clubmate Billy Lacey played for the victors. Internationals in action 2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva got on the scoresheet as he skippered Brazil Under-20’s as they held Argentina to a 2-2 draw in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Paraguay. Fellow future red Emiliano Insúa was a substitute for Argentina. 2009 - Insúa captained his country in the same competition as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela in Maturín. 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they were held to a goalless draw by Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani featured as Algeria beat South Africa 3-1 in a group game in Equatorial Guinea. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Norway. 2017 - Sadio Mané scored as Senegal beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in an African Cup of Nations group game in Gabon. 1988 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both played as Israel lost 3-2 to Belgium in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. 1997 – Future red Brad Friedel featured in the USA’s 2-0 defeat by Mexico in the US Cup in Pasadena. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they drew an Olympics qualifier 1-1 with Chile. Store re-launch 2007 - The city centre club store in Williamson Square was re-launched by John Aldridge. On the same day, Steven Gerrard was named in uefa.com’s Team of the Year for 2006, a feat he repeated a year later. Stalemate at Anfield 1955 – Bury faced Stoke City at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round Third Replay that ended 2-2. The game was staged at 2pm on a Wednesday, just two days after the previous replay at Goodison Park. The Potters eventually won a fifth meeting 3-2, with all of the encounters going to extra time, and the final winner coming in the 120th minute! Also on the move 1926 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie signed for Airdrieonians. He struck five times in eight League games before moving on to Stenhousemuir in July 1927. 1951 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was sold to Accrington Stanley for £3,000. He had signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, netting twice in 42 appearances. 1996 - Nigel Clough left Anfield for Manchester City for £1.5m, only two and a half years after he had joined from Nottingham Forest for £2.275m. He had netted nine times in 44 reds games. 2009 - Craig Bellamy joined Manchester City from West Ham United for a reported £14m after nine strikes in 26 outings for the Hammers. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Jermaine Pennant signed for Tampines Rovers in Singapore, netting five times in 34 games. 2017 – Pennant signed for Bury, playing seven times before moving on again at the end of the campaign. 2020 – Swedish winger Kristoffer Peterson re-joined Utrecht on loan from Tranmere Rovers, striking twice in eight games in this second spell. 2021 – Ex-reds centre-half Conor Masterson joined Swindon Town on loan from Queens Park Rangers, turning out five times for the Robins. On the same day, forward Max Woltman signed pro terms with the reds. He made his senior bow in our UEFA Champions League group game defeat of AC Milan at the San Siro in December 2021. 2023 – Forward David Amoo joined Crewe Alexandra from Stevenage on a free transfer, failing to score in seven outings before being released at the end of the season. Other reds games 2002 – Southampton held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield with Michael Owen putting us in front before Kevin Davies grabbed one of his four goals past us. 1991 – John Barnes netted as Wimbledon left L4 with a 1-1 draw, with Warren Barton converting a late free kick as Jimmy Carter got a rare start for the reds due to injuries. 1980 – Paul Dyson headed in the only goal of our visit to Coventry City early on, as a nineteen-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end. 1952 – We lost 3-0 to Sunderland at Roker Park as Len Shackleton bagged two of his five goals past us before Dickie Davis scored the last of his seven. 1935 – We won 2-1 at Portsmouth, despite falling behind early on to one of Fred Worrall’s four strike against the reds. Gordon Hodgson and Vic Wright scored after the break. Tosh El Boss 2004 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Real Murcia. They were bottom of the table in the Spanish League and he could not prevent them returning to the Second Division after just one season in the top-flight. -
Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Truth day 2007 - We lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with the Kop staging an emotional protest at the start of the game against Kelvin Mackenzie and in support of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989. Dirk Kuyt grabbed our goal after Tomáš Rosický had bagged a brace, with Thierry Henry rounding out the scoring with the last of his nine goals past us. Double trouble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored on his reds bow as we won 2-1 at Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round, with Luis Suárez netting the winner with the inadvertent use of an arm, so getting on the scoresheet in a third consecutive reds game. Matt Green nabbed a late consolation for the Stags. Double off the mark 2012 - Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey both struck their first goals for the club as we thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Robbie Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Craig Bellamy equalised before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty on the stroke of time. Birthday boy Andy Carroll was also on target. More hat-tricks 1968 - Roger Hunt scored a 22-minute second-half treble as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a League game at Anfield after Geoff Strong had opened the scoring. Bobby Hope had hit the bar with a Baggies penalty, but the referee ordered a re-take because Tommy Lawrence had moved off his line. Tony Brown scored from the second kick to level the game with one of his eight strikes past the reds. 1992 - John Barnes bagged a treble on his comeback from a five-month injury lay-off, including a last-minute penalty, as we won 4-0 at Rob Jones’ former club Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup Third Round tie as we set off towards Wembley glory. This remains our most recent FA Cup hat-trick away from home, with Steve McManaman opening the scoring. This was one of just two victories we enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit. Carroll’s day 1989 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead. He signed from Newcastle United for a club record £35m on transfer deadline day in January 2011 after 33 goals in 91 games for his boyhood club, including one in their 3-1 defeat of the reds at St. James’ Park in December 2010. He struck eleven times in 58 reds games, moving to West Ham United for their club record £15.5m fee in June 2013 after spending the previous season on loan at Upton Park. 1998 – Keeper Shamal George was born in Wirral. He joined the reds in 2009, making his first appearance for the first-team in our friendly win at Huddersfield Town in July 2016, as an outfield player! He moved on to Colchester United in August 2020. 1940 – Welsh full-back Allan Jones was born in Flint. He signed as an amateur in April 1955, turning professional two years later. He played five times before moving to Brentford in August 1963. 1876 – Inside-right Andrew McCowie was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896, netting eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. In and out 2016 – Midfielder Marko Grujić signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m and then was immediately loaned back. After arriving permanently that summer, he netted once in sixteen senior appearances, moving on to Porto permanently in July 2021 after a loan spell. On the same day, Luis Suárez was voted fifth in the Ballon d’Or, with fellow ex-red Javier Mascherano coming in fourteenth as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the trophy. Held by the Hatters 2008 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at League One side Luton Town, with a John Arne Riise own goal cancelling out a Peter Crouch strike. We comfortably won the replay, but were then eliminated from the FA Cup at home by Barnsley at the Fifth Round stage. Off at the double 1912 - William Stuart scored his only reds goal on his debut as we won 3-2 at Manchester City’s old Hyde Road ground. John Bovill struck his seventh and final reds goal in this game, with Jack Parkinson also on target as George Wynn nabbed a brace for the home side. Danny the champion 2008 - Centre-back Daniel Agger was named Denmark’s Footballer of the Year. He had played just 27 times for the reds in 2007, including the Champions League Final in Athens. Le debutant 2001 - Grégory Vignal made his reds bow as we beat Second Division Rotherham United 3-0 at home in an FA Cup Third Round encounter. Emile Heskey bagged a brace, to go with a rare Dietmar Hamann strike. Igor Bišcan was sent off as we began another Cup-winning run. Live on the Beeb 1984 - The first FA Cup tie outside the Final to be screened live in the UK was shown by the BBC on a Friday evening. Ian Rush netted a brace as we beat a Newcastle United side that included ex-reds Kevin Keegan and Terry McDermott 4-0 in the Third Round, with Michael Robinson and Craig Johnston also on target. However, we lost at Brighton & Hove Albion in the next round. Cup disappointment 1951 - We lost 3-1 at Norwich City, our first defeat in the FA Cup Third Round since we had also been knocked out by the Canaries fourteen years earlier. Tom Docherty netted twice, with Noel Kinsey also on target for the home side. Jack Balmer bagged our late consolation. Reds deaths 1989 – Keeper Dave Underwood died. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. 2004 – Forward John Evans died. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957. 2005 - The funeral of post-war left-back Eddie Spicer took place at St Cwyfan's Church, Llangwyfan, near Denbigh. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title as well as playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. Wartime goalscoring feats 1918 - Thomas Bennett scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Preston North End 3-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture, grabbing a brace with right-half John Bamber also on target. 1940 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble as we won 7-3 at Manchester City, with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring twice apiece. Beating the Blues We have twice seen off Chelsea at Anfield on this day in history. 1923 - Billy Lacey struck the only goal of our top-flight encounter late on, his 29th and last reds goal. Forward Jack Sambrook appeared for the second and final time. 1962 - We won an FA Cup Third Round meeting by the odd goal in seven, with Ian St. John netting twice and Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court also on the scoresheet, as we led 4-1 at the break. We were eventually knocked out by Preston North End in the Fifth Round. Bobby Tambling bagged the first two of his eight goals past us, with Barry Bridges also on target for the Londoners. Reds in charge 1993 - Ex-red Richard Money took over as boss of Sc***horpe United, having previously held the role in a Caretaker capacity while an Iron player. He led them to mid-table in the Fourth Division that season, and again the following year before he left that summer. 2009 – Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Derby County, as a replacement for Jewell. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. 1998 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Bradford City. He led them into the Premiership in his first full season, before resigning after keeping them up the following year. 2015 – Jewell was named Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion. However, he quit just seven days later after being asked to take a pay cut. On the move 1995 - Ex-reserves winger John Jeffers joined Second Division Shrewsbury Town on loan from Port Vale. He played five games for the Shrews, netting once. 2011 – Keeper Tony Warner signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing 25 times until the end of that season. Fagan for the Scots 1945 - Willie Fagan scored for a Scottish Services XI as they drew 2-2 with Belgium in Brussels. Fellow reds Jim Harley and Billy Liddell both also played. A big win 1894 - We won 4-1 at Rotherham Town in our first game on this day in history. James Stott grabbed a brace with Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also scoring as we conceded our first goal following six consecutive clean sheets, scored by Frank Turner Jr. Other reds games 1990 – Swansea City held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round meeting at Vetch Field, trouncing them 8-0 in the Anfield replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1973 – Kevin Keegan headed in the only goal of our trip to West Ham United. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at Sheffield United, with Bert Oswald putting the Blades in front before Syd Roberts and Alf Hanson struck. Jack Pickering equalised late on with the last of his five goals past us. 1906 – We shared a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. 1900 – We lost 1-0 at Sunderland. Career extremes 2007 – Joe Allen signed as a professional for Swansea City, having been part of their youth set-up since the age of nine. He struck seven goals in 150 first-team appearances for the Swans before arriving at Anfield for £15m in August 2012. 2010 - Patrik Berger announced his retirement from football due to persistent knee injuries. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, and finished his career back with his first club, Sparta Praha. -

He struck nineteen times in 222 reds games across his first six seasons, helping us to keep 96 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. More red trebles galore 1909 - Joe Hewitt bagged a treble against his former club as we won 4-1 at Sunderland with Arthur Goddard also scoring. Billy Hogg struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Sam Hardy also saving one of his spot-kicks. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. New bosses 1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974. 2010 - Tom Werner took over as Chairman of the club, following Martin Broughton’s departure. The New York-born businessman co-founded Fenway Sports Group and is also Chairman of the Boston Red Sox. King Billy’s treble 1951 - Billy Liddell scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we won 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur. Sonny Walters bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Bennett also on target. Great evening for the kids 2004 - We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Fifth Round of the Carling Cup, with Florent Sinama-Pongolle converting a late penalty to equalise Jermain Defoe’s goal at the end of extra time, one of his six past us to date. The reds won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 as the away end rocked to the brand new ‘La Bamba’ song in honour of new boss Rafael Benítez. Stéphane Henchoz was making his 205th and final reds appearance, with winger Richie Partridge playing for the third and last time, while defender David Raven made his reds bow and forward Mark Smyth appeared for the only time. Jerzy’s nightmare 2002 - A Diego Forlán brace handed Manchester United a two-goal lead at Anfield, greatly assisted by Jerzy Dudek. A late Sami Hyypiä strike gave us hope, and Dietmar Hamann’s fierce drive hit the woodwork, but we lost 2-1. These were the first of Forlán’s four goals past us. Reds farewells 2012 - Phil Taylor died aged 95. He signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. 1962 - Left-winger Alan A'Court scored his 63rd and final reds goal as we beat Fulham 2-1 at Anfield in our first season back in the top flight. Roger Hunt also struck with Ronnie Moran missing a penalty. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. Tom Waring opened the scoring with the last of his six goals past us, but Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Tommy Johnson also on target as right-back Willie Steel played for the 128th and last time. 2022 – Steve Heighway retired from the Academy for the second time. He had been working for seven years, following his previous eighteen-year stint. Mølby off the mark 1984 - Jan Mølby bagged his first reds goal, although it was merely a consolation in our 3-1 defeat at Chelsea. Future red David Speedie and Joe McLaughlin netted, with Kerry Dixon scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Thumping the Blues 2021 – We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park. Jordan Henderson bagged his 33rd and final goal for the club with Mohamed Salah also striking before Demarai Gray pulled a goal back before half time. Mauled by Tigers 2013 – We lost 3-1 at Hull City, the first time we had lost to the Tigers in seventeen meetings. They opened the scoring when a Jake Livermore strike was deflected off Martin Škrtel, before Steven Gerrard equalised with a free kick. David Meyler put the home side ahead before Škrtel diverted a shot from Tom Huddlestone into his own net for an own goal. 2012 - Daniel Agger headed in the only goal of the game as we hosted Southampton in a Premiership fixture. 2008 – We were held to a goalless Premiership draw at Anfield by West Ham United as we went to the top of the table. A Kop mosaic in support of Michael Shields was held up prior to kick off. Diego born 1982 – Sub keeper Diego Cavalieri was born in São Paulo. He signed from Palmeiras in his native Brazil for £3.5m in July 2008, making just ten senior appearances, all in cup competitions, although he sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved on to Italian side Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. A winning debut 1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his League bow in our defeat of West Ham United at Anfield, with Peter Cormack bagging the only goal of the game. Chris Lawler missed this game through injury, having played in all of our previous 102 League games. Razor off 1981 - Ray Kennedy was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half of our goalless League Cup Fourth Round tie at Arsenal as Terry McDermott played his 300th reds game. On the move again 1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar was released from Sheffield Wednesday, having been with the Owls for just over two months, without making a senior appearance. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-half and first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked as Manager of Valencia. 2014 - Abel Xavier became Manager of Portuguese Segunda Liga side Sporting Clube Farense, remaining in the role for six months. 2017 - Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of Everton, continuing his long association with Sam Allardyce who had just taken over as the Blues’ boss. Management moves 1994 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Sociedad for the second time after three years with the club. 2008 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Watford, leaving his coaching role at Chelsea. Out on loan 2010 – Keeper Chris Kirkland joined Leicester City on loan from Wigan Athletic, playing just three times for the Foxes. On the same day, Tony Warner was released by Sc***horpe United after making just two first-team appearances. 2005 - Second string centre-back Zak Whitbread moved to Millwall on loan. He played 27 times before signing permanently seven months later. Billy Liddell scored our other goal. 1945 - Forward Willie Fagan bagged all the goals in our 3-0 Wartime League defeat of Newcastle United. 1951 - We also faced the Geordies, with Jimmy Payne netting in our 1-1 top-flight draw at St. James’ Park as Billy Liddell reached 200 League games for the reds. Willie’s debut 1962 - Half-back Willie Stevenson made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at home to Burnley. Ian St. John netted our consolation. Andy Lochhead struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Ray Pointer also on target. 1894 - We entertained the Clarets for the first time in another First Division fixture, although we lost this encounter 3-0. Three off in Spain 1998 - Paul Ince, Steve McManaman and Valencia’s Amadeo Carboni were all sent off very late on as we escaped from the Mestalla with a 2-2 draw in our UEFA Cup encounter. We progressed to the Third Round on the away goals rule, thanks to a Steve McManaman header and Patrik Berger strike after Claudio López gave the home side the lead in first-half stoppage time. However, we were pegged back by a very late equaliser when a López free-kick came back off the post and keeper David James for an own goal. Wolves three times We have faced Wolverhampton Wanderers three times on this day over the years, all in First Division games. 1900 - We lost 2-1 at Molineux, with inside-right Johnny Walker grabbing our consolation. The end of a European dream 1971 - Alun Evans netted his 33rd and last reds goal after legendary striker Gerd Müller had put Bayern München two goals up in a two-minute spell in our European Cup Winners’ Cup meeting in Germany as we eventually lost 3-1 to crash out at the Second Round stage, following an earlier goalless draw at Anfield with Uli Hoeneß also netting. However, Alexandre Lacazette netted a late equaliser. 1973 – Tommy Smith walked out of Highbury half an hour before kick-off after being told he had been dropped and was subsequently dropped for five games. Disappointment against Rovers 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers, with Dirk Kuyt missing several good opportunities, and the home side twice striking the woodwork in the opening period. 1996 - We went down 3-0 at the same venue. Bienvenue Damien 2010 – The appointment of Damien Comolli as Director of Football Strategy was announced. He was promoted to Director of Football in March 2011, working with Kenny Dalglish on his transfer and youth policies until leaving ‘by mutual consent’ in April 2012. Happy birthday Willie 1939 - Left-half Willie Stevenson was born in Leith. He signed from Rangers for £20,000 in October 1962 and missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. A win at the Bridge 2008 - Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike was the only goal of our trip to Stamford Bridge, handing Chelsea their first home League defeat since February 2004, ending an 86-game unbeaten run. Alonso also hit the post with a second-half free-kick. Ton up for Didi 2002 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds League game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield, with Jamie Redknapp making his first appearance back at Anfield since his transfer. Danny Murphy scored a beautifully curled shot, before Michael Owen’s penalty restored our lead following Dean Richards’ equaliser. Luis at the treble 2013 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick, his first at Anfield, as we thumped West Bromwich Albion 4-1, with James Morrison pulling one back from the spot before Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. Most recently 2022 – Alison Becker played his 200th reds game as we won a UEFA Champions League group game 3-0 at Ajax, with left-back Andy Robertson reaching a half century of European appearances for the club. Mohamed Salah struck before the break, with Darwin Núñez heading in before Harvey Elliott completed the scoring as we secured our place in the knock-out phase. Heading towards Wembley 2011 – We won our League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-1 at Stoke City. Kenwyne Jones struck just before half-time, with Luis Suárez bagging a brace after the break. Into the Lions’ den 2004 - We won 3-0 at Millwall in a Third Round Carling Cup match as we headed towards a record tenth Final in the competition on our first visit to The New Den. Jerzy Dudek skippered the reds for the first time, while future Lion Zak Whitbread was making his reds bow. Salif Diao netted his third and final reds goal in the first half, with Milan Baroš adding a brace. Unfortunately, the game was marred by sick chants from the home fans that led to confrontations between the two sets of supporters. A rarity for Sami 2000 - Sami Hyypiä sat on the reds bench for the only time in his first five seasons at Anfield as a late Emile Heskey goal handed us victory over Czech side Slovan Liberec at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Second Round tie. Robbie Fowler spurned a number of good chances, including a penalty. Sami did not reappear on the bench until March 2005. Robbie’s poor form could be partly explained by the fact that his future wife Kerrie had given birth to their second daughter, Jaya, earlier that day. A blooming treble 1912 - Rams legend Steve Bloomer bagged a hat-trick as we lost 4-2 to Derby County at the Baseball Ground, the last of his fourteen strikes past us. Arthur Metcalf netted both our goals, with Harry Leonard also on target for the home side. 1977 - We also faced the Rams when a David Fairclough brace handed us a 2-0 League Cup Third Round victory at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-left Fred Hopkin scored a hat-trick as we won a Lancashire Senior Cup game 5-2 at Southport, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Reid also netting. Signing on 1896 – Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie joined the reds from Cambuslang Hibernian. He struck eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. On the move 2000 - Stan Collymore joined Bradford City from Leicester City on a free transfer. He struck twice in eight games, before joining Real Oviedo in Spain. 2003 - Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was sacked as Manager of Macclesfield Town, his only time in the hot seat. He had led them to 33 victories in his 102 games since taking over in November 2001, leading them to mid-table finishes in consecutive seasons in the basement division before being dismissed after a poor start to the following campaign. He joined the reds in February 2006. 2015 – Young midfielder Cameron Brannagan signed a new contract. He made nine senior reds appearances before moving on to Oxford United in January 2018. Taking the Heighway again 1974 - Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of our home League meeting with Leeds United for the second successive season, with each goal coming mid-way through the second half of the game. He signed from Sevilla for £6.8m in June 2013, making twelve senior appearances in his first campaign before returning to his homeland on loan for the next two seasons, moving on to sold to S.S. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913.
