A black day for the club
1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974.

Luis at the treble
2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şahin bagging the last of his three reds strikes and Leon Barnett deflecting a Steven Gerrard shot into his own net.

Aldo’s treble
1987 - John Aldridge scored a hat-trick past Peter Shilton, including two penalties, in our 4-0 defeat of Derby County. Peter Beardsley bagged the other, while John Barnes had a goal disallowed for scoring direct from an apparently indirect free-kick as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th reds game.

Rushie’s European record
1992 - Ian Rush scored his twentieth and final European goal, a then club record, in our 2-1 win at Apollon Limassol in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Don Hutchinson scored the second as we progressed 8-2 on aggregate. Paul Stewart was dismissed late on after a tangle with the Cypriot keeper Christophi.

Moving on
1982 - Terry McDermott left the reds to re-join Newcastle United. He had struck 81 times in 329 reds games after signing from the Toon for £175,000 in November 1974, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980, he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season.

Red centuries
2013 – Jordan Henderson played his hundredth reds game as we won 3-1 at his former club Sunderland, our 400th Premier League victory. Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring with Luis Suárez adding a brace.
2007 - Substitute Yossi Benayoun’s strike past ex-red Chris Kirkland at Wigan Athletic ensured that the reds reached 400 away points in the Premiership as we won 1-0. However, the match was somewhat marred by fighting in the home stands when some reds celebrated our winning goal in amongst Latics fans.
1984 – Bruce Grobbelaar played his 200th game for the reds as Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 at Anfield. Ex-Evertonian Imre Varadi and Gary Shelton grabbed the goals.

A goalscoring debut
1951 - Centre-forward Jack Smith scored on his reds debut in our 2-0 First Division defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Bryan Williams netting his first goal for the club as Bob Paisley played his 200th reds game and Phil Taylor reaching 300 appearances.

Another European first
1965 - We made our first appearance in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, going down 1-0 to a late Gianfranco Leoncini pile-driver at Juventus with the home side also having three penalty appeals turned down. We won the second leg 2-0 and went on to reach the final.

More European adventures
1970 - Emlyn Hughes struck a 25-yard equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Hungarian side Ferencvárosi in a Fairs Cup match, to go through to the Second Round 2-1 on aggregate.
1971 - Crazy Horse netted again as we beat Servette FC Genève 2-0 at Anfield, the first Swiss visitors to Anfield, with Steve Heighway also scoring, to reach the Second Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

1998 - Jamie Redknapp bagged a brace as we beat Kosice 5-0 in Slovakia to reach the UEFA Cup Second Round 8-0 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler also netted twice, having previously missed a penalty, while Paul Ince was also on target with Patrik Berger and Michael Owen both hitting the woodwork. Marek Spilar was dismissed for the home side after an hour for yet another clumsy challenge on Owen.
2009 – We lost our Champions League group game 2-0 at Fiorentina, with Stevan Jovetić netting both goals, the first of his four goals past us to date.

1,500 at the City Ground
1979 - We played our 1,500th away League game, going down 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, with Garry Birtles netting. During this game, Viv Anderson’s indirect free-kick went straight in and was disallowed.

Most recently
2018 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth reds game as we secured a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, with Daniel Sturridge’s fabulous late curled effort being his fiftieth reds League goal and his 67th and last strike for the club. Eden Hazard had opened the scoring with his seventh and last goal against us.

Derby despair
We have lost both our top-flight meetings with Everton on this day in history.
1906 - Jack Parkinson bagged our consolation as we lost 2-1 at Anfield, with Sam Hardy saving a Walter Abbott penalty. Sandy Young bagged a brace for the visitors, two of his twelve derby goals.
1928 - We lost 1-0 across the park.

1917 - We also faced the Blues in a Wartime League game at Goodison, with Thomas Bennett and Arthur Metcalf striking as we drew 2-2.

Signing on
1997 - Michael Owen signed a new contract until 2003. He stayed at Anfield until August 2004, netting 158 times in 297 reds games.
2021 – Right-back Isaac Mabaya signed pro terms with the reds. He joined the Academy aged six, making the first-team bench for an FA Cup tie in January 2022. He featured for the first time in a 4-0 thumping by Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Thailand six months later.

Red births
1990 – Ex-reserve Steven Irwin was born in Liverpool. He was promoted to Melwood in July 2008, having featured in the FA Youth Cup Final in 2006. He failed to break through to the first team proper, although he played in all three pre-season games in the summer of 2010 and was released in June 2011.
2000 – New Georgian keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was born in Tbilisi. He signed from Valencia in August 2024 for an initial £25m, but his arrival was delayed until July 2025.

Red farewells
1934 - Ex-red Tom Cooper skippered England while winning his fifteenth and final cap, as they thumped Wales 4-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff.
1996 – Forward Lee Jones made his fourth and last reds appearance as we won 2-1 at West Ham United. Stan Collymore put us in front before Slaven Bilić equalised after a quarter of an hour. Michael Thomas nabbed the second-half winner.

Disappointment in the Black Country
We have twice lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in First Division meetings on this day in history.
1894 - Jimmy Ross nabbed our consolation from the spot as we lost 3-1.
1962 - Jimmy Melia bagged a brace in our 3-2 defeat. Jimmy Murray struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Chris Crowe and Terry Wharton also on target.

Mixed fortunes against the Wearsiders
1900 - We lost 2-1 at home to Sunderland, with wing-half Charlie Wilson bagging his first reds goal. Jimmy Millar netted one of his four goals past us, with Billy Hogg grabbing the first of his five.
1990 - We won another top-flight encounter at Roker Park, with Ray Houghton striking the only goal of the game.

Winning the League
2013 - Liverpool Ladies won the Women’s Premier League title for the first time after beating Bristol Academy in their final game of the campaign.

Out on loan
2001 - Pegguy Arphexad joined Stockport County on a month’s loan. He played three times, conceding five goals as they only picked up one point.
2013 – Ex-reds centre-half Zak Whitbread joined Derby County on loan from Leicester City, signing on permanently in June 2014 after one goal in four games in this spell.

Olympic defeat
2000 - Brad Friedel was on the losing side as the USA failed to win a medal at the Sydney Olympics, being beaten 2-0 by Chile in the third-place play-off.

Other reds games
1973 – We shared a dour goalless draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
1956 – Jimmy Melia and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Leicester City 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield.
1934 – We beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in L4. Alf Hanson, Sam English and Gordon Hodgson all scored before the break, with Terry Sandford scoring two of his five goals against the reds
1923 – Dick Forshaw bagged the only goal of Burnley’s visit to Anfield.

Adam on target
2015 – Adam Lewis scored for England Under-17’s as they trounced San Marino 8-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Portugal, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge.

Youngsters on the world stage
2009 – Martin Kelly played for England Under-20’s in their 4-0 defeat by Ghana in the World Championships Finals in Egypt. Meanwhile, future red Sebastián Coates featured for Uruguay as they beat Uzbekistan 3-0 in the same group.
