A treble from Ronnie 1986 - Ronnie Whelan helped keep us on course for our sixteenth League title by netting a hat-trick in our 5-0 mauling of Coventry City at Anfield, with Jan Mølby and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. 1983 - We played out a goalless draw at Highfield Road, with Phil Neal playing his 500th reds game. 1963 - We also struck five, coming from two goals down to beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 at Anfield in a top-flight match. Kevin Lewis netted his 44th and final reds goal with Willie Stevenson and Ian St. John also on target that Good Friday, to add to a brace from Jimmy Melia. Gerry Byrne made his 117th consecutive appearance, before he missed the next four games, having not missed a match since October 1960. Cliff Jones struck the first of his five goals against the reds, with Terry Dyson also on target. On our way to Wembley 1978 - We won through to the European Cup Final for the second successive season, beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-0 at Anfield, to progress 4-2 on aggregate. Ray Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case netted on the night. Anfield Iron no more 2019 – Legendary red Tommy Smith died in Waterloo. He had signed on as a professional on his seventeenth birthday in April 1962, going on to win four League titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time with Liverpool, netting 48 times in 638 games. Not on our way to Wembley 1980 - We held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Hillsborough in the first of our four FA Cup Semi-final ties, before eventually succumbing three weeks later at Highfield Road. Ray Kennedy played his 300th red game that day. 1995 - We also faced the Gunners when Robbie Fowler bagged the only goal of our Premiership meeting at Highbury in the final minute. 1947 - Burnley beat us 1-0 at Maine Road in an FA Cup Semi-final replay, with inside-forward Willie Fagan reaching a century of reds appearances. However, the Clarets went on to lose the final to Charlton Athletic. Ins and out 2012 – Director of Football Damien Comolli left the club “by mutual consent”, with the summer departure of Dr. Peter Brukner as Head of Sports Medicine & Sports Science also announced. 1926 – Scottish centre-forward Tommy Reid signed from Clydebank for £1,000. He bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929. 1928 – Scottish outside-left John Lindsay signed from Rhyl Athletic. He struck three times in sixteen outings before moving on to Swansea Town in January 1930. Beginnings and end 1930 - Forward Dave Wright made his reds bow as we were thumped 4-1 at Burnley in a top-flight fixture. Jim Smith nabbed our consolation with Louis Page netting the last two of his seven goals past us and Billy Stage also bagging a brace. 1898 – Right-half John McCartney played his 166th and final reds game as we lost 3-1 at Derby County, with Johnny Walker bagging our consolation, his first strike for the club. John Boag struck two of his six goals against us, with Jack Burton also on target. Good and bad days for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored in his hundredth different reds game as we beat Fulham 2-0 at Anfield. It was his 134th reds goals in a total of 254 games. Emile Heskey nabbed our other goal in Jean Tigana’s final game in charge of Fulham. 1999 - He ruptured his hamstring in our goalless draw at Leeds United, the start of several years’ problems with that muscle. Patrik Berger played his hundredth reds game that day. Rushie’s treble 1988 - Ex-red Ian Rush scored a hat-trick against Everton playing for Leeds United alongside Kenny Dalglish, in a testimonial match for John Charles and Bobby Collins. 1894 – Jimmy Haydock struck four times for Blackburn Rovers as they thumped us 5-0 in a Palatine League game at Ewood Park. Managerial comings and goings 1996 - John Aldridge was named Manager of Tranmere Rovers. He was in charge for nearly five years, keeping them in mid-table in the First Division until his final season, as well as leading them to the Worthington Cup Final in 2000 and the FA Cup Quarter-finals in the season he was sacked. 1938 - Ex-reds centre-half Alex Raisbeck left as Manager of Chester City. He had been in the post for two years, and later took charge at Bath City before returning to Anfield as a scout. He had skippered us to two League titles and the Second Division championship. Reds births and death 2005 - Post-war keeper Cyril Sidlow died. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947, and also played in the 1950 FA Cup Final. 1950 – Chairman Tom Werner was born in New York City. He took on this role in November 2010 after the club was taken over by New England Sports Ventures. 1886 - Left-half Joe Dines was born in King’s Lynn. He won Olympic Gold in 1912 before giving up his teaching job and signing for the reds from Ilford later that year. However, he only made one senior reds appearance, and was killed in action in September 1918. Tons up 1902 – Arthur Goddard netted as we drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest as keeper Bill Perkins reached a century of reds games. 1924 – We beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Anfield despite falling behind to the first of George Elliott’s eight goals past us. Donald McKinlay levelled before Jimmy Walsh struck twice, while keeper Elisha Scott played his 200th game for the club. Derby disappointment 1965 - Willie Stevenson bagged our consolation from the spot as we lost 2-1 at Everton. Ex-red Johnny Morrissey netted, with Derek Temple also on target for the Blues. Mixed fortunes against the Wearsiders and Blades We entertained Sunderland twice on this day in the First Division shortly before the First World War. 1909 - Ronald Orr converted a penalty while centre-half Alex Raisbeck struck his nineteenth and final reds goal. Jack Parkinson had opened the scoring as we won 3-0, with this being our thousandth in League football. 1913 - Arthur Metcalf struck a very late brace as we were beaten 5-2, with Charlie Buchan bagging a hat-trick, three of the 21 strikes he registered against the reds. He had already struck five times in the reverse fixture that season. James Richardson netted the first two of his five goals past us while inside-right John Tosswill played his eleventh and last game for us. We have hosted Sheffield United three times on this day in history. 1915 - We won 2-1 thanks to a Jackie Sheldon penalty and a goal from Fred Pagnam, with half-back Tommy Fairfoul playing his 71st and final reds game and Sheldon missing another spot kick. Joe Kitchen netted the last of his eight goals against us. 1968 - Our other First Division meeting with the Blades ended in a 2-1 defeat, with Roger Hunt grabbing our consolation. 1958 - Billy Liddell netted the only goal of our Second Division fixture. Stalemates at Maine Road We have twice left Manchester City with 1-1 draws on this day in top-flight meetings. 1974 - Peter Cormack nabbed our goal, with Franny Lee on target for the Sky Blues, one of his six past us. 1993 - Ian Rush netted our equaliser after Garry Flitcroft had put the home side ahead. Stevie named 2006 - Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, along with Chelsea’s Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney. Our skipper went on to claim the prize. Other reds games 2004 – Shaun Bartlett struck the only goal of Charlton Athletic’s visit, the Addicks’ first win at Anfield since February 1954. 1975 – We beat Carlisle United 2-0 in L4 thanks to goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan. 1971 – Alec Lindsay put through his own net for the only goal of our trip to Chelsea, 1969 – We beat Leicester City 2-1 at Filbert Street. Emlyn Hughes and Ian Callaghan both scored. 1952 – We were thumped 4-0 at Manchester United. Jack Rowley struck one of his six goals against the reds. Roger Byrne bagged a brace, including one from the spot, with Johnny Downie also on target. 1895 – We drew 2-2 at Preston North End with Jimmy Ross and Frank Becton on target. Conor’s cap 2011 - Conor Thomas made his debut for England Under-18’s, winning his only cap while on loan with the reds, in their 1-1 draw with Italy in Capri. Conor Coady skippered the side. Dicks on the up 1986 - Julian Dicks signed as a professional for Birmingham City. He netted once in 102 games for the Blues before moving to West Ham United for £300,000 in March 1988. Also in international action 1978 – Future red Mark Lawrenson played for the Republic of Ireland in their 3-0 friendly defeat in Poland. 1989 – Future red István Kozma featured as Hungary were held to a 1-1 draw by Malta in a World Cup qualifier in Budapest. 2005 – Future reds keeper Daniele Padelli played for Italy Under-20’s as they beat Russia 2-0. 2022 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty netted for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat in Serbia.

New bosses 1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974. 2010 - Tom Werner took over as Chairman of the club, following Martin Broughton’s departure. The New York-born businessman co-founded Fenway Sports Group and is also Chairman of the Boston Red Sox. King Billy’s treble 1951 - Billy Liddell scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we won 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur. Sonny Walters bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Bennett also on target. Great evening for the kids 2004 - We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Fifth Round of the Carling Cup, with Florent Sinama-Pongolle converting a late penalty to equalise Jermain Defoe’s goal at the end of extra time, one of his six past us to date. The reds won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 as the away end rocked to the brand new ‘La Bamba’ song in honour of new boss Rafael Benítez. Stéphane Henchoz was making his 205th and final reds appearance, with winger Richie Partridge playing for the third and last time, while defender David Raven made his reds bow and forward Mark Smyth appeared for the only time. Jerzy’s nightmare 2002 - A Diego Forlán brace handed Manchester United a two-goal lead at Anfield, greatly assisted by Jerzy Dudek. A late Sami Hyypiä strike gave us hope, and Dietmar Hamann’s fierce drive hit the woodwork, but we lost 2-1. These were the first of Forlán’s four goals past us. Reds farewells 2012 - Phil Taylor died aged 95. He signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. 1962 - Left-winger Alan A'Court scored his 63rd and final reds goal as we beat Fulham 2-1 at Anfield in our first season back in the top flight. Roger Hunt also struck with Ronnie Moran missing a penalty. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. Tom Waring opened the scoring with the last of his six goals past us, but Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Tommy Johnson also on target as right-back Willie Steel played for the 128th and last time. 2022 – Steve Heighway retired from the Academy for the second time. He had been working for seven years, following his previous eighteen-year stint. Mølby off the mark 1984 - Jan Mølby bagged his first reds goal, although it was merely a consolation in our 3-1 defeat at Chelsea. Future red David Speedie and Joe McLaughlin netted, with Kerry Dixon scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Thumping the Blues 2021 – We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park. Jordan Henderson bagged his 33rd and final goal for the club with Mohamed Salah also striking before Demarai Gray pulled a goal back before half time. Salah and Diogo Jota then netted in the second half to increase the pressure on Rafael Benítez. Mauled by Tigers 2013 – We lost 3-1 at Hull City, the first time we had lost to the Tigers in seventeen meetings. They opened the scoring when a Jake Livermore strike was deflected off Martin Škrtel, before Steven Gerrard equalised with a free kick. David Meyler put the home side ahead before Škrtel diverted a shot from Tom Huddlestone into his own net for an own goal. 2012 - Daniel Agger headed in the only goal of the game as we hosted Southampton in a Premiership fixture. 2008 – We were held to a goalless Premiership draw at Anfield by West Ham United as we went to the top of the table. A Kop mosaic in support of Michael Shields was held up prior to kick off. Diego born 1982 – Sub keeper Diego Cavalieri was born in São Paulo. He signed from Palmeiras in his native Brazil for £3.5m in July 2008, making just ten senior appearances, all in cup competitions, although he sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved on to Italian side Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. A winning debut 1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his League bow in our defeat of West Ham United at Anfield, with Peter Cormack bagging the only goal of the game. Chris Lawler missed this game through injury, having played in all of our previous 102 League games. Razor off 1981 - Ray Kennedy was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half of our goalless League Cup Fourth Round tie at Arsenal as Terry McDermott played his 300th reds game. Fortunately, we won the replay the following week, en route to retaining the trophy. Beating the Rams again and again We have beaten Derby County three times on this day in history without conceding a goal. 2001 - Michael Owen’s poached effort gave us a win at Pride Park, although the reds had to thank Jerzy Dudek for a string of top-class saves, including one from a late Fabrizio Ravanelli penalty, to keep us top of the League. 1906 - Joe Hewitt nabbed the only goal of the game at the Baseball Ground as forward Sam Raybould played his 200th reds game. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson, Jimmy McDougall and James Clark struck as we won 3-0 at Anfield. European wins 1965 - We beat Belgians Standard de Liège 3-1 at Anfield in our first game of a European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign that saw us reach the Final in only our second season in continental competition. Chris Lawler struck a brace that night, with Peter Thompson also netting in a very bad-tempered game. 2020 – Curtis Jones struck the only goal of Ajax’s visit to Anfield in a UEFA Champions League group game, played behind closed doors. This result ensured we qualified as group winners with a game still to play. Mixed fortunes against the Blades We have faced Sheffield United three times over the years, winning just once. 1956 - Our most recent meeting was at Anfield, when Johnny Wheeler, Billy Liddell, Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court and Alan Arnell were all on target in a 5-1 Second Division victory. Jimmy Hagan’s consolation was one of his four strikes against the reds. 1923 - Harry Chambers grabbed our goal as we drew a top-flight meeting at Bramall Lane, with Fred Tunstall nabbing one of his eight goals past us. 1900 - Charlie Satterthwaite was on target in a 2-1 home defeat, also in the First Division. Big wins 1979 - We beat Middlesbrough 4-0 at Anfield, with the goals coming from Terry McDermott, Alan Hansen, David Johnson and Ray Kennedy. Ray Clemence was presented with a specially inscribed carriage clock before the game to honour his achievement of only conceding sixteen goals in the 42 games of the last League campaign. 1917 - We trounced Blackburn Rovers 6-1 at Ewood Park in a Wartime League fixture, with Thomas Bennett bagging a brace and Harry Lewis, Arthur Metcalf, Jack Waine and Donald McKinlay all netting. 1945 - We won another Wartime League match, beating Huddersfield Town 4-1 at Anfield thanks to a Billy Liddell brace and goals from Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer. International first and last 1971 – Future red Peter Cormack won his ninth and final cap for Scotland in their 2-1 friendly victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish also in action. 2017 - Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho scored his first goal for England Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida. In and out 2004 - Former reserves midfielder Layton Maxwell signed for Mansfield Town. He only played one game for the Stags before moving to Rhyl the following year. 1997 - Icelandic forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason arrived at Anfield from Keflavík for £150,000. Unfortunately, he never broke into the reds first-team, returning to his old club three years later. 1993 - Jimmy Case joined Sittingbourne from Darlington on a free transfer. He only remained there a month before rejoining Brighton & Hove Albion. 1911 – American-born outside-left Hugh Lester joined the reds, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to play for Liverpool, although he only made two senior appearances before moving on to Oldham Athletic in May 1913. On the move again 1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar was released from Sheffield Wednesday, having been with the Owls for just over two months, without making a senior appearance. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-half and first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked as Manager of Valencia. 2014 - Abel Xavier became Manager of Portuguese Segunda Liga side Sporting Clube Farense, remaining in the role for six months. 2017 - Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of Everton, continuing his long association with Sam Allardyce who had just taken over as the Blues’ boss. He stayed in the role until the following May. Other reds games 1993 – Jan Mølby scored from the spot as Wimbledon held us to a 1-1 draw in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Robbie Earle equalised late on with one of his five goals against the reds as we went on to be knocked out on penalties after a replay. 1992 – We drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace in another League Cup Fourth Round match in L4 with Mike Marsh converting a penalty. David Burrows had to be carried off with a ligament injury that kept him out of action for four months. We lost the replay at Selhurst Park. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. At the World Cup 2022 – Ex-red Dejan Lovren appeared in Croatia’s goalless draw with Belgium in Qatar, with future red Wataru Endō in action as Japan beat Spain 2-1, with both progressing to the knock-out phase. European recognition 2009 - Steven Gerrard was voted into tenth in the Ballon d’Or, with Fernando Torres coming eleventh. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi winning the award for the first time. Also in international action 1971 – Emlyn Hughes played for England as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Greece. 1996 – Future red Brad Friedel kept goal as the USA lost a World Cup qualifier 2-1 in Costa Rica. 2003 – Future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina Under-20’s as they beat Uzbekistan 2-1 in a World Championships Finals game in the United Arab Emirates. 2004 – Future red Jari Litmanen captained Finland in their 2-1 defeat of the host nation in the Semi-final of the Bahrain Prime Minister’s Cup. 2009 – Future red Suso played for Spain Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 3-0 in a friendly.
