He joined the Anfield coaching staff in 1958, becoming Assistant Manager to Bob Paisley in 1974, before moving into the hot seat himself nine years later. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League, European Cup and League Cup, retiring just a year later after 71 victories in 131 games in all competitions.     A Real thumping 2009 - We thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield to reach the Quarter-finals of the Champions League 5-0 on aggregate. Steven Gerrard played his hundredth game in Europe, while Xabi Alonso was making his 200th reds appearance. Fernando Torres opened the scoring before Gerrard converted a penalty prior to the break.     Another treble for Gordon 1934 - Our best ever win on this day came when Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick in a 6-2 home League win over Middlesbrough, the fourteenth of his seventeen for the club. Sam English grabbed a brace, with Harold Taylor also on target and forward Tosh Johnson making his reds bow on the day he signed. Benny Yorston struck two of his five goals against the reds.     Happy birthday Ronnie 1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. We won 4-1 at the Manor Ground to reach the Third Round, with Billy Lacey also on target.
