Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on pe

European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day. 1985 - Mark Lawrenson grabbed the only goal of the game in Greece to knock Panathinaikos out 5-0 on aggregate, as we reached our fifth European Cup Final in nine years. 1997 - Our 2-0 defeat of Paris Saint-Germain in the European Cup Winners’ Cup at Anfield was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit. Robbie Fowler and Mark Wright netted our goals. Robbie’s strike was his seventh in the competition, a club record. 2018 – Mohamed Salah scored in his seventh consecutive reds game, netting twice p

In comes Chico 1981 - Steve Nicol signed from Ayr United for £300,000. He played 468 times across the defence and midfield, scoring 46 times and helping us to four League titles, European Cup, three FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield, as well as being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. He left the club to sign for Notts County on a free transfer in January 1995. 1983 – He grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. We always win in Wales 2003 - Goals from Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen handed us a 2-0 win over Manchester United as we won the Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium, to claim our seventh League Cup with Jerzy Dudek being named man of the match. John Arne Riise was playing in his hundredth reds game, while Milan Baroš suffered the rare indignity of coming on from the bench and then later himself being substituted. Happy birthdays 1994 - Lazar Marković was born in Čačak, Serbia. He signed from SL Benfica for £20m in July 2014, netting three times in 34 games before moving t

Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Steve Stone bagged Villa’s late consolation. 1965 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt netted a treble in our 5-1 win at West Ham United, after Gordon Milne and Ian Callaghan had opened the scoring. Martin Peters scored for the Irons, one of his fourteen goals past us, with all the goals coming before the hour mark. 1986 - We also thumped the Hammers on their home turf when

Rafa’s century 2009 – Rafael Benítez secured his hundredth League win as reds boss as we came from behind to trounce Manchester United 4-1 at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring from the spot but Fernando Torres hounded Nemanja Vidić into a mistake before coolly slotting home the equaliser, with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty a minute before the break. The hapless Vidić was sent off against the reds for the second time that season with a quarter of an hour to go, with Fábio Aurélio netting from the resultant free-kick. The day was complete when Andrea Dossena struck his s

Crystal smashed 1989 - Eight outfield players scored, a League record, in our 9-0 humiliation of Crystal Palace at Anfield. John Aldridge came off the bench to score a penalty with his first kick, in his final reds game. Glenn Hysén struck the first of his seven reds goals in this game. For the record, our other scorers that day were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush, with Steve Nicol nabbing a brace. David Burrows, Alan Hansen, Ronnie Whelan and substitute Jan Mølby were the only outfield reds not on target. Geoff Thomas blew a golden chance to ne

Clinching the title 1979 - A 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield handed us our eleventh League title, thanks to goals from Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott. We ended the season with a record 68 points and record goal difference of +69, having only conceded sixteen League goals during the entire campaign. This game was originally postponed from New Year’s Day. The arrival of an Anfield legend 1939 - Left-half Bob Paisley signed from Bishop Auckland for a £10 signing-on fee, and £5 per week. He served the club well in his 277 games, notching twelve times, before joining

Happy birthday Sammy 1959 - Sammy Lee was born in Liverpool. He had a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. Roy in charge 1994 - Roy Evans had his first game in charge following the departure of Graeme Souness as Manager. He did not get off to an auspicious start, as we needed an Ian Culverhouse own goal to help secure a point at Norwich City, with John Barnes bagging our late leveller as we drew 2-2. City keeper Bryan Gunn was sent off for handling outside the area in the final minute, with Chris Sutton nabbing the first two of his seven goals against us. Despite admitting that Bruce Grobbelaar had not been at fault for either goal, a certain tabloid rag later alleged that he had failed to throw

Shanks in charge 1959 - Bill Shankly took over as Manager, thirteen days after his appointment was announced. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club, but his honours as reds boss included three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. Happy birthday Chico 1961 - Steve Nicol was born in Irvine. The versatile Scot signed from Ayr United for £300,000 in October 1981 and played 468 reds games, scoring 46 times. He helped us to four League titles, three FA Cups, European Cup and an FA Charity Shield, and was named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. Worst ever defeat 1954 - Birmingham City trounced us 9-1 at St. Andrews in a Second Division fixture to condemn us to our worst ever defeat, with Eddie Brown netting the first three of his four goals past us. Billy Liddell grabbed our consolation. Peter Murphy

Divock at the treble 2015 – Forward Divock Origi bagged a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we thumped Southampton 6-1 in a League Cup Fifth Round tie on the south coast. Future red Sadio Mané had given the home side a very early lead but a brace from Daniel Sturridge put us ahead. Jordon Ibe was also on target after the break as we headed towards Wembley. 2018 – Divock Origi pounced on a Jordan Pickford error to hand us victory in the Anfield derby in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, having already hit the crossbar from close range late in the game. A record for Rushie 1992 - Ian Rush scored his first ever goal at Old Trafford to put us 2-0 up following Don Hutchinson’s opener. A Norwegian nightmare 1974 - We secured our record victory, thumping Norwegians Strømsgodset 11-0 at Anfield in our opening game of that season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Midfielder Brian Hall was the only outfield player not to score, with Phil’s Boersma and Thompson grabbing a brace apiece. For the record, our other goals that day came from an Alec Lindsay penalty, Steve Heighway, Peter Cormack, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Kennedy.
