Happy birthdays 1972 - Markus Babbel was born in Munich. He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. Anfield christened 1888 - The first ever League game at Anfield was played as Everton beat Accrington 2-1. On the losing side 1894 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Football League, going down 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in our third First Division game, having remained unbeaten through the whole of our debut season in the Second Division. Big Anfield wins 1917 - We thumped Port Vale 4-0 in a Wartime League game thanks to two from Thomas Bennett and further goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. 1979 - We beat Coventry City by the same score in the First Division, with David Johnson nabbing a brace and Jimmy Case and Kenny Dalglish also netting. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson struck twice with Dick Edmed, Jimmy McDougall and Tom Reid all also on target as we thumped Leicester City 6-3 in another top-flight match, with right-back Bob Done scoring the first of his thirteen reds goals. Arthur Chandler netted the last of his six goals past us, with James Baxter and Thomas Gibson also scoring. Future reds at the treble 1999 - Yossi Benayoun struck a hat-trick for Israel in their 8-0 trouncing of San Marino in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Tel-Aviv. On the same day, Christian Ziege bagged a hat-trick as Germany thumped Northern Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Dortmund, with fellow future red Markus Babbel also in action. Rhian Brewster played for England Under-21’s for the eighth and last time before leaving Anfield in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Austria. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Raheem Sterling all also featured for their countries. 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with one of his goals coming as he converted the rebound from his own penalty, as he also had another spot-kick saved in Egypt’s 6-0 trouncing of Niger in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Alexandria. Thommo off the mark 1973 – Phil Thompson bagged his first reds goal in our 2-0 home defeat of Derby County, with Kevin Keegan adding a late penalty. Ray Clemence was playing his 200th reds game. 1979 – We thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield after the first game ended goalless. Phil Thompson struck his thirteenth and final goal for the club in his 300th outing before Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace. David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. George Hilsdon’s penalty was the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Windridge also netting. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. Off the mark 1912 - John Tosswill scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, with Tom Miller also netting. Centre-half Bob Ferguson also made his debut, following his signing from Third Lanark. 1926 – Winger Dick Edmed bagged the first of his 46 reds goals as we lost 2-1 at Derby County, with Jimmy Gill bagging one of his six goals past us and Harry Bedford scoring the first of his nine. Starting off with a stalemate 1897 - We kicked off our season with a 2-2 draw against Stoke, with inside-forward Willie Walker scoring on his reds bow and Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Forward Dan Cunliffe and right-winger Bobby Marshall also debuted as Billy Maxwell bagged the first of six goals against the reds, with Tom Hill also on target. 1933 - We also left the Victoria Ground with a share of the spoils, with Harold Taylor netting as we drew 1-1 with Stoke City, as they were known by then. Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts made his only senior reds outing in this game, while Harry Davies nabbed his fourth and final goal past us. Disappointment against the Trotters and Terriers 1911 - We lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight meeting, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our consolation and John Bovill and half-back Harry Lowe both debuting. Alf Bentley struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Harold Hilton also scoring. 1915 - We returned to Burnden Park, drawing a Wartime League fixture 1-1, with Fred Pagnam netting. A League Cup first 1968 - We won at home in the League Cup for the first time, at the fourth attempt, as Roger Hunt, Chris Lawler, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson all netted in our 4-0 defeat of Sheffield United. International reds 1999 - Several reds turned out for their countries in Euro 2000 qualifiers. Michael Owen struck in England’s 6-0 demolition of Luxembourg, his first senior England goal at Wembley, with Steve McManaman on the scoresheet twice, his first goals for his country, in his first game as a Real Madrid player. Robbie Fowler also played, under the management of ex-red Kevin Keegan. Sami Hyypiä skippered Finland for the first time as they lost 2-1 to Germany in Helsinki, with Christian Ziege winning his first cap as a Middlesbrough player, and fellow future red Markus Babbel also playing. Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Real Madrid player in France’s goalless draw in the Ukraine. Bruce makes his bow 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar made his first reds appearance in our 3-0 win at Zürich. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted, with Phil Neal converting a penalty. The game was due to be played the day before, but torrential rain had made the pitch unplayable. Management debuts 1947 – Former reds boss Roy Hodgson was born in Croydon. He arrived from Fulham in July 2010, only leading us to thirteen victories in his 31 games matches in charge, leaving “by mutual consent” six months later. 2010 – Ex-reds midfielder Kevin MacDonald was appointed Caretaker Manager of Aston Villa after Martin O’Neill’s sudden departure. He took charge of them for seven games until Gérard Houllier’s arrival. Multiple debutants 2015 – Centre-forward Christian Benteke, right-back Nathaniel Clyne, forward Roberto Firmino, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder James Milner all made their reds bows as a late Philippe Coutinho strike earned us a 1-0 victory at Stoke City in the opening game of the season, just eleven weeks after our 6-1 humiliation at the same venue. 1997 – Paul Ince and Danny Murphy made their first-class reds debuts in our 1-1 draw with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Karl-Heinz Riedle also made his reds bow, aged 31 years and 328 days, a then club record for our oldest debutant. Michael Owen scored from the spot. Heading off 1982 – Forward David Johnson re-joined Everton for £100,000 after 78 times in 213 reds games. He had arrived at Anfield from Ipswich Town in August 1976 for a record £200,000 fee, and went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, as well as becoming the first player to score for both sides in the Merseyside derby. 2013 – Midfielder Jay Spearing joined Bolton Wanderers, having spent a successful season on loan with the Trotters. He had graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after captaining the reds as they retained the FA Youth Cup that May. He made 55 senior reds appearances without finding the back of the net. 2018 – Danny Ings joined Southampton on loan for the season, making the move permanent for an initial £18m fee in July 2019. He had only struck four times in 25 games since signing from Burnley in July 2015 as he suffered two serious injuries. Ian St. John bagged a brace, with our other goals being scored by Chris Lawler and Geoff Strong. A right Charlie 2007 - Keeper Charles Itandje signed from Racing Club de Lens. He made seven appearances in the cups in his first season, but failed to impress, conceding ten goals and only keeping one clean sheet, eventually departing for Greek side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens in January 2011. Red strikers going free 1979 - A young Peter Beardsley signed for Carlisle United having been released by Newcastle United. He scored 29 times in 126 appearances for the Cumbrians before being sold to Vancouver Whitecaps in April 1982 for £275,000. 2002 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Blackpool from Norwich City on a free transfer. He could only score twice in thirty games for the Seasiders, before moving on again, this time to Linfield. Happy birthdays 1884 – Full-back Sam Speakman was born in Huyton. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. Off the mark 2015 – Substitute Danny Ings bagged his first reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City, with Lucas Leiva playing his 200th League game for the club. Unfortunately, Russell Martin capitalised on a Simon Mignolet error to equalise. Happy birthdays 1922 - Left-back Eddie Spicer was born in Garston, Liverpool. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1895 - Full-back Tommy Lucas was born in St. Helens. He signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Thiago’s bow 2020 - Thiago Alcântara debuted as we won 2-0 behind closed doors at Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen sent off for the home side on the stroke of half time. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016.
