    Happy birthdays 1972 - Markus Babbel was born in Munich. He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. Anfield christened 1888 - The first ever League game at Anfield was played as Everton beat Accrington 2-1. On the losing side 1894 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Football League, going down 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in our third First Division game, having remained unbeaten through the whole of our debut season in the Second Division. Harry Bradshaw struck our consolation that day. 1926 - We also entertained the Villains, with Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw on target in a 2-1 victory, while George Stephenson bagged the first of his four goals against the reds. Disappointing debuts 2001 - New signing Jerzy Dudek made his debut in our 3-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa. Steven Gerrard, who scored our goal, was later sent off for a bad tackle on George Boateng. Dion Dublin scored one of his seven goals past us, with Lee Hendrie and Darius Vassell also striking for the visitors. 1947 - Inside-forward Kevin Baron made his League debut in our 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United, with Albert Stubbins nabbing our consolation. Jimmy Hagan bagged the first of his four strikes against us, with Dennis Thompson and Harold Brook also netting. 1970 - We visited Third Division Mansfield Town for a League Cup Second Round tie, being held to a goalless draw with forward Jack Whitham making his reds bow as a substitute for Brian Hall. Dudley Roberts had a goal disallowed for the Stags, with the reds striking the woodwork five times. 1919 - Forward Dick Forshaw made his reds bow in our 1-0 defeat at Arsenal as Jackie Sheldon had a penalty saved. He went on to net 124 times in 288 games, winning two League titles. Full-back Sam Speakman made his 26th and last reds outing as Jock Rutherford bagged one of his six strikes against the reds. 1948 - Billy Liddell struck as we drew 1-1 at Highbury. 1984 - Alan Kennedy was on target in a 3-1 defeat there, his twentieth and last goal for the club. Brian Talbot struck the last two of his six goals against us, with Tony Woodcock also on target. Big Anfield wins 1917 - We thumped Port Vale 4-0 in a Wartime League game thanks to two from Thomas Bennett and further goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. 1979 - We beat Coventry City by the same score in the First Division, with David Johnson nabbing a brace and Jimmy Case and Kenny Dalglish also netting. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson struck twice with Dick Edmed, Jimmy McDougall and Tom Reid all also on target as we thumped Leicester City 6-3 in another top-flight match, with right-back Bob Done scoring the first of his thirteen reds goals. Arthur Chandler netted the last of his six goals past us, with James Baxter and Thomas Gibson also scoring. Future reds at the treble 1999 - Yossi Benayoun struck a hat-trick for Israel in their 8-0 trouncing of San Marino in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Tel-Aviv. On the same day, Christian Ziege bagged a hat-trick as Germany thumped Northern Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Dortmund, with fellow future red Markus Babbel also in action. Award winners 2020 - Trent Alexander-Arnold was named PFA Young Player of the Year, with Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk all also being named in the PFA Team of the Year, following our runaway League title win. More international reds bidding for Euro 2000 1999 - Skipper Steve Staunton scored a 25-yard free-kick winner as the Republic of Ireland narrowly won 3-2 in Malta, with future red Robbie Keane also on target. This was Staunton’s first international goal in his second spell at Anfield, while Malta netted against the Irish for the first time, in their seventh encounter. Ex-red Mark Kennedy also played. Vegard Heggem also played. On the same day, Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan and Steve Heighway all featured as England drew 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland in a friendly at Wembley. 1985 - Avi Cohen bagged his second and final international goal as Israel beat Taiwan 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv. Fellow future red Ronnie Rosenthal also played. 2020 – Dejan Lovren scored his first goal since joining Zenit St. Petersburg as Croatia lost 4-2 to France in a UEFA Nations League group game in Paris. Diogo Jota won his last cap as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player as Portugal won 2-0 in Sweden, with ex-red Conor Coady making his senior debut in England’s goalless draw in Denmark. Rhian Brewster played for England Under-21’s for the eighth and last time before leaving Anfield in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Austria. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Raheem Sterling all also featured for their countries. 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with one of his goals coming as he converted the rebound from his own penalty, as he also had another spot-kick saved in Egypt’s 6-0 trouncing of Niger in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Alexandria. Xherdan Shaqiri netted while winning his first cap as a reds player as Switzerland thumped Iceland 6-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game in St. Gallen. Also on target was ex-red Luis Suárez who bagged a brace, including one from the spot, in Uruguay’s 4-1 friendly defeat of Mexico in Texas. Toni Silva won his first cap for Guinea-Bissau as a Mamelodi Sundowns player in their 2-2 draw in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Mozambique, who were being managed by Abel Xavier. Also in action that day were Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, future red Thiago Alcântara and ex-reds Iago Aspas and Péter Gulácsi. 2007 – Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf struck for Senegal in their 5-1 thumping of Burkina Faso in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Dakar, with future red Kolo Touré appearing as Ivory Coast won another qualifier 1-0 in Gabon. 1993 - Ian Rush was on target as Wales were held to a 2-2 draw by the Republic of Czechs & Slovaks in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, playing alongside ex-red Dean Saunders. Meanwhile, ex-red John Aldridge netted in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-0 qualifying defeat of Lithuania at Lansdowne Road. Ronnie Whelan and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton also featured. Le Boss again 2010 - Gérard Houllier was appointed Manager of Aston Villa, taking over a fortnight later. He led them to just twelve victories in 34 games in charge, before having to step down in April 2011 after falling ill. On the same day, future red Daniel Sturridge struck his first goal for England Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Greece in a European Championships qualifier in Tripoli, Mario Balotelli scored his last goal for Italy at this level in their 2-0 defeat of Luxembourg, with future red Mamadou Sakho netting for France Under-21’s for the only time, and future red Simon Mignolet also in action at this level. 2002 – Kolo Touré played for Ivory Coast for the first time since joining Arsenal as they were held to a goalless draw by South Africa in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Abidjan. Stéphane Henchoz also played for his country that day. A mobile arrangement 2000 - Liverpool Football Club announced that Siemens Mobile Phones had become an official ‘Walk On Partner’ of the club, in a three-year seven-figure deal. In and out of old haunts 1992 - Nigel Spackman re-signed for Chelsea from Rangers for £485,000. He made 88 appearances for the Blues in this second four-season spell at the Bridge without scoring, largely under Glenn Hoddle. 2006 - Stéphane Henchoz returned to Blackburn Rovers after a season with Wigan Athletic, playing sixteen times while back at Ewood Park. 2008 – Terry McDermott left as Assistant Manager of Newcastle United following Kevin Keegan’s second resignation as boss. 2021- Ex-reds loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Gaziantep on loan from Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü, netting twice in 27 outings. Other reds games 1990 – We beat Wimbledon 2-1 at Plough Lane. John Barnes and Ronnie Whelan scored our goals. 1973 – Kevin Keegan bagged the only goal of Chelsea’s visit to Anfield, later having a penalty saved by Peter Bonetti. 1956 – We drew 1-1 at Doncaster Rovers in a Second Division encounter, with Billy Liddell bagging a late leveller. 1951 – We lost 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Jesse Pye scored before Dennis Wilshaw netted one of his seven goals against the reds. Ken Brierley nabbed our consolation. 1923 – Jimmy Walsh struck the only goal of our trip to Preston North End. 1906 – Jack Cox was on target as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Also in international action 2021 – Conor Bradley, Kostas Tsimikas, future red Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Joe Allen, Christian Benteke, Nikolay Mihaylov, Raheem Sterling, Danny Ward and Harry Wilson all represented their countries. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-17’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat by the Republic of Ireland. 2014 – Jordan Henderson, Rickie Lambert, Raheem Sterling and future red James Milner all featured for Roy Hodgson’s England as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Switzerland, with future red Xherdan Shaqiri on the losing side. Brad Smith played for Australia on the same day in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Saudi Arabia at Craven Cottage, while Joe Gomez debuted for England Under-19’s in their 1-1 friendly draw in Germany, with fellow future red Ragnar Klavan also playing for his country. 1987 – Future red Nigel Clough appeared for England Under-21’s as they lost a friendly 2-0 to West Germany. 1982 – Glenn Hysén played for the senior Sweden side as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Romania. 1977 – Hysén appeared for the Under-18’s as they drew 0-0 in Finland.

    Thommo off the mark 1973 – Phil Thompson bagged his first reds goal in our 2-0 home defeat of Derby County, with Kevin Keegan adding a late penalty. Ray Clemence was playing his 200th reds game. 1979 – We thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield after the first game ended goalless. Phil Thompson struck his thirteenth and final goal for the club in his 300th outing before Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace. David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. George Hilsdon’s penalty was the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Windridge also netting. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. Off the mark 1912 - John Tosswill scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, with Tom Miller also netting. Centre-half Bob Ferguson also made his debut, following his signing from Third Lanark. 1926 – Winger Dick Edmed bagged the first of his 46 reds goals as we lost 2-1 at Derby County, with Jimmy Gill bagging one of his six goals past us and Harry Bedford scoring the first of his nine. Starting off with a stalemate 1897 - We kicked off our season with a 2-2 draw against Stoke, with inside-forward Willie Walker scoring on his reds bow and Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Forward Dan Cunliffe and right-winger Bobby Marshall also debuted as Billy Maxwell bagged the first of six goals against the reds, with Tom Hill also on target. 1933 - We also left the Victoria Ground with a share of the spoils, with Harold Taylor netting as we drew 1-1 with Stoke City, as they were known by then. Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts made his only senior reds outing in this game, while Harry Davies nabbed his fourth and final goal past us. Disappointment against the Trotters and Terriers 1911 - We lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight meeting, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our consolation and John Bovill and half-back Harry Lowe both debuting. Alf Bentley struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Harold Hilton also scoring. 1915 - We returned to Burnden Park, drawing a Wartime League fixture 1-1, with Fred Pagnam netting. We have also faced Huddersfield Town twice on this day in history. 1929 - We won a top-flight encounter 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson, James Clark and Henry Race. 1957 - We also played them in the Second Division with Tony Rowley on the scoresheet in a 2-1 defeat at Leeds Road. Stan Howard bagged a brace for the home side. In and out 1937 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop played his 71st and final reds game as Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer on target and George Tadman and future reds boss Don Welsh netting for the visitors. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw was also making his final appearance for the club, turning out for the 291st time. 1912 – Full-back Sam Speakman signed from amateur side Colne but could only play 26 first-team games without scoring before joining South Liverpool in 1920. 1901 – Inside-forward Tommy Green signed from New Brighton Tower, notching once in seven outings before joining Swindon Town in April 1903. A win at Highbury 1982 - David Hodgson’s first reds strike and a Phil Neal goal handed us a 2-0 win at Arsenal. The author was present at this game, seeing the reds win for the first time. Three against 1920 - Tommy Browell scored a hat-trick for Manchester City in their 3-2 defeat of the reds at Hyde Road, three of his seven goals past us. Harry Chambers and Walter Wadsworth netted our goals. 1935 - We also lost to City, going down 2-0 at Anfield in another top-flight match with Eric Brook bagging one of his nine goals against the reds, and Fred Tilson grabbing one of his six. 1943 - Our third meeting on this day resulted in a 2-1 Wartime League defeat at Maine Road, with Alf Hanson on target. A League Cup first 1968 - We won at home in the League Cup for the first time, at the fourth attempt, as Roger Hunt, Chris Lawler, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson all netted in our 4-0 defeat of Sheffield United. International reds 1999 - Several reds turned out for their countries in Euro 2000 qualifiers. Michael Owen struck in England’s 6-0 demolition of Luxembourg, his first senior England goal at Wembley, with Steve McManaman on the scoresheet twice, his first goals for his country, in his first game as a Real Madrid player. Robbie Fowler also played, under the management of ex-red Kevin Keegan. Sami Hyypiä skippered Finland for the first time as they lost 2-1 to Germany in Helsinki, with Christian Ziege winning his first cap as a Middlesbrough player, and fellow future red Markus Babbel also playing. Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Real Madrid player in France’s goalless draw in the Ukraine. Ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen was on target in Norway’s 1-0 defeat of Greece in Oslo, with Vegard Heggem also in the side. Another ex-red, Don Hutchison, netted as Scotland won 2-1 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dean Saunders won his seventieth cap, and first while with Bradford City, grabbing his final goal for Wales in their 2-1 win in Belarus. Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones also featured. Future reds Sporting Director Richard Hughes won his second and last cap for Scotland Under-21’s. as they won a European Championships qualifier in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Also in action that day were Patrik Berger, Steve Staunton and future reds Alex Manninger, Fernando Morientes and Bolo Zenden. 2010 - Péter Gulácsi saved a penalty for Hungary Under-21’s in their 1-0 home defeat to Wales. Future reds Joe Allen and Dejan Lovren, and ex-red Krisztián Németh also featured at this level that day.     Wembley win 1980 - A Terry McDermott goal gave us the FA Charity Shield against FA Cup holders West Ham United at Wembley in the traditional curtain-raiser to the season. This was our fifth outright Shield win, retaining it after also having won it the previous season, while the goal was our 6,000th in all competitions. Bruce makes his bow 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar made his first reds appearance in our 3-0 win at Zürich. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted, with Phil Neal converting a penalty. The game was due to be played the day before, but torrential rain had made the pitch unplayable. Management debuts 1947 – Former reds boss Roy Hodgson was born in Croydon. He arrived from Fulham in July 2010, only leading us to thirteen victories in his 31 games matches in charge, leaving “by mutual consent” six months later. 2010 – Ex-reds midfielder Kevin MacDonald was appointed Caretaker Manager of Aston Villa after Martin O’Neill’s sudden departure. He took charge of them for seven games until Gérard Houllier’s arrival. Ton up 2019 – Divock Origi played his hundredth reds game as we beat Norwich City 4-1 at Anfield in our opening League fixture of a triumphant campaign. All our goals came before the break, with Grant Hanley turning an Origi cross into his own net before Mohamed Salah struck. Quick off the mark 2006 - Craig Bellamy and Mark González both scored on their reds debuts as we came from behind to beat Maccabi Haifa 2-1 in the first leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield. This was the first time a pair of debutants had scored since a 3-0 defeat of Bury in August 1928, with Jermaine Pennant also making his official reds bow as Sami Hyypiä played his fiftieth game in the competitions for the reds. Fabio starts out 2012 - Fabio Borini struck his first reds goal as we beat Belarusian side Gomel 3-0 in our UEFA Europa League Third Qualifying Round second leg encounter at Anfield. Steven Gerrard scored his 150th goal for the club, with Glen Johnson also netting. Multiple debutants 2015 – Centre-forward Christian Benteke, right-back Nathaniel Clyne, forward Roberto Firmino, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder James Milner all made their reds bows as a late Philippe Coutinho strike earned us a 1-0 victory at Stoke City in the opening game of the season, just eleven weeks after our 6-1 humiliation at the same venue. 1997 – Paul Ince and Danny Murphy made their first-class reds debuts in our 1-1 draw with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Karl-Heinz Riedle also made his reds bow, aged 31 years and 328 days, a then club record for our oldest debutant. Michael Owen scored from the spot. Heading off 1982 – Forward David Johnson re-joined Everton for £100,000 after 78 times in 213 reds games. He had arrived at Anfield from Ipswich Town in August 1976 for a record £200,000 fee, and went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, as well as becoming the first player to score for both sides in the Merseyside derby. 2013 – Midfielder Jay Spearing joined Bolton Wanderers, having spent a successful season on loan with the Trotters. He had graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after captaining the reds as they retained the FA Youth Cup that May. He made 55 senior reds appearances without finding the back of the net. 2018 – Danny Ings joined Southampton on loan for the season, making the move permanent for an initial £18m fee in July 2019. He had only struck four times in 25 games since signing from Burnley in July 2015 as he suffered two serious injuries. Backing Michael 2005 - Rafael Benítez backed Michael Shields, ahead of our game against CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria, saying, “We support Michael Shields’ family and we also support the family of Martin Georgiev. It is up to the court to decide what to do with Michael, but we hope to see him back in England soon.” He was eventually pardoned and released in September 2009. Testimonials 1996 - Our most recent testimonial fixture on this day was held in honour of Jan Mølby in front of a crowd of just 8,316. PSV Eindhoven provided the opposition, leaving Anfield having won 3-2 with Mølby playing just under an hour. Stan Collymore was on target with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also heading a goal after we had gone three goals behind, while the eventual winning goal came from second half substitute Bolo Zenden. Robbie Fowler had to be substituted on the referee’s advice after an ugly confrontation with PSV’s Bjorn van der Doelen. 1993 - A testimonial for Ronnie Whelan was played at Anfield with Newcastle United providing the opposition. Neil Ruddock scored the only goal of the game, his first for the reds. He also broke ex-red Peter Beardsley’s cheekbone in a collision. 1987 - We travelled north of the border to face Celtic in a match in aid of their legendary player Tommy Burns, with the reds running out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Ronnie Whelan. Chelsea at Anfield 1969 - We kicked off our season with a 4-1 defeat of Chelsea at Anfield in what was Bill Shankly’s 400th League game in charge of the reds. Ian St. John bagged a brace, with our other goals being scored by Chris Lawler and Geoff Strong. A right Charlie 2007 - Keeper Charles Itandje signed from Racing Club de Lens. He made seven appearances in the cups in his first season, but failed to impress, conceding ten goals and only keeping one clean sheet, eventually departing for Greek side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens in January 2011. Red strikers going free 1979 - A young Peter Beardsley signed for Carlisle United having been released by Newcastle United. He scored 29 times in 126 appearances for the Cumbrians before being sold to Vancouver Whitecaps in April 1982 for £275,000. 2002 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Blackpool from Norwich City on a free transfer. He could only score twice in thirty games for the Seasiders, before moving on again, this time to Linfield. Happy birthdays 1884 – Full-back Sam Speakman was born in Huyton. He signed from amateur side Colne in 1912 but could only play 26 first-team games without scoring before joining South Liverpool in 1920. 2002 – Left-back Owen Beck was born in Wrexham. He joined the Academy from Stoke City at Under-13’s level, signing his first professional contract in June 2020. Another friendly 2021 – Takumi Minamino scored before Roberto Firmino bagged a brace as we beat Club Atlético Osasuna 3-1 in an Anfield friendly in front of a 75% capacity crowd, post-COVID. Christian off the mark 2011 – Future red Christian Benteke bagged a brace as Belgium Under-21’s lost 3-2 to Turkey in a friendly, his first goals at this level. Also on the move 2019 – Centre-half Martin Škrtel signed for Atalanta from Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü, but his contract was terminated by mutual consent after just three weeks, moving back to Turkey to join İstanbul Başakşehir. 2007 - Luis Suárez joined Ajax from Groningen for €7.5m, having bagged fifteen goals in 37 games since arriving in the Netherlands the previous summer. 2002 - Academy starlet Neil Prince joined Torquay United on a free transfer, after failing to break into the first team at Anfield.     Goalscoring feats at St. James’ Park 1987 - Steve Nicol grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Newcastle United in front of the live TV cameras, following John Aldridge’s opener, who also had another strike disallowed for offside. Neil McDonald converted from the spot for the home side. 1961 - Right-half Gordon Milne scored his first reds goal to help us to a 2-1 Second Division win there, with our other score coming from a George Heslop own goal. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins, while centre-half Dick White played his 200th game for the club. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. Off the mark 2015 – Substitute Danny Ings bagged his first reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City, with Lucas Leiva playing his 200th League game for the club. Unfortunately, Russell Martin capitalised on a Simon Mignolet error to equalise. Happy birthdays 1922 - Left-back Eddie Spicer was born in Garston, Liverpool. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1895 - Full-back Tommy Lucas was born in St. Helens. He signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Thiago’s bow 2020 - Thiago Alcântara debuted as we won 2-0 behind closed doors at Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen sent off for the home side on the stroke of half time. Sadio Mané bagged a brace early in the second half, with Alisson Becker later saving a penalty from Jorginho. East end despair 2014 – We lost 3-1 at West Ham United, with Winston Reid and Diafra Sakho putting the Irons two up inside the first ten minutes, with ex-red Stewart Downing effectively man-marking Steven Gerrard. Raheem Sterling struck past future red Adrián to give the reds hope, but Morgan Amalfitano completed the scoring late on. This meant we set a new club record of scoring in seventeen consecutive away games in the top flight, a record that eventually stopped at eighteen. Happy birthday Jerome 1996 – Forward Jerome Sinclair was born in Birmingham. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion’s Academy aged fourteen in the summer of 2011, becoming our youngest ever player in September 2012, aged sixteen years and six days, when he featured in a League Cup Third Round tie at his old club. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016. Out-foxed again 2003 - Michael Owen netted from the spot before Emile Heskey struck the winner against his old club Leicester City at Anfield for the third consecutive season as we won 2-1, with Marcus Bent bagging a very late consolation for the visitors. Disappointment at The Dell 1986 - Kevin MacDonald broke his leg shortly after coming on as a substitute as we lost 2-1 at Southampton, with Steve McMahon equalising after David Armstrong opened the scoring with the last of his four goals against the reds. However, Glenn Cockerill struck the winner for the Saints. 1980 - Graeme Souness and David Fairclough netted as we drew 2-2, with Phil Neal missing a penalty. Avi Cohen was heavily criticised in the Israeli press for playing on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. 1997 - We also drew on the south coast, with Karl-Heinz Riedle nabbing our goal before Kevin Davies equalised with the first of his four strikes past us as centre-half Mark Wright played his 210th and final game for the reds. A milestone day at Old Trafford 2004 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United, as we benefited from a John O’Shea own goal, sandwiched between a Mikael Silvestre brace for the home side. Centenary defeat 1988 - We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy, staged to celebrate a hundred years of the Football League. Perry Groves opened the scoring in the first half with Steve Staunton bagging a late equaliser with his first reds goal, but Brian Marwood struck the winner. Charlie Boyd sat on our bench for one of only two times, on his nineteenth birthday. Derby joy 1913 - Billy Lacey struck a brace as we beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park in a First Division meeting, to secure our first win of the season in our fourth fixture. Full-back Sam Speakman made the first of his 26 reds appearances in this game. 2016 – Centre-half Ragnar Klavan opened the scoring with his first reds goal as we won 3-0 at Derby County in a League Cup Third Round match, as midfielder Ovie Ejaria and keeper Loris Karius made their debuts. Bill begins 1924 – Defender Bill Cockburn played the first of his 67 reds games as we held Bury to a goalless draw at Gigg Lane in a top-flight meeting. Beattie beaten 1983 - Andy Beattie died, aged seventy. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. Young Englanders 1983 - Future red Paul Walsh grabbed a brace as England Under-21’s beat their Danish counterparts 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Carrow Road. Ex-red Dave Watson and future red Mark Walters both made their debuts in this game, while fellow future red Mark Wright also played. 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan and David Raven both played for their countries at Under-19’s level in European Championships qualifiers, with the latter making his debut for England at this level.
