He moved on to Sheffield United in December 1934, appearing for the Blades in the FA Cup Final as they lost to Arsenal at Wembley in 1936. An Anfield win 1931 - Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both featured for the home side as England beat Wales 3-1 at Anfield in the British International Championships. Keeper Harry Storer put through his own net, with Jack Devey bagging one of his seven goals against the reds and Albert Wilkes also on target. 1922 - Donald McKinlay, Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson struck as we won 3-0. 1984 - We won 2-0 at Newcastle United with Steve Nicol and John Wark netting. 1972 - We also beat United in the top-flight at home with Peter Cormack, Alec Lindsay and John Toshack grabbing our goals as we won 3-2, despite Tommy Smith missing a penalty. John Tudor bagged one of his five goals against the reds, with Malcolm MacDonald striking one of his seven past us. Happy birthdays 1997 – Midfielder Ovie Ejaria was born in Southwark in south London. He made eight senior appearances, moving on to Reading in August 2020 after a successful campaign on loan. 1968 – Chief Scout Barry Hunter was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. He played as a defender for Wrexham and Reading, before moving into coaching and then scouting for Blackburn Rovers, Norwich City and most recently Manchester City, joining the reds in June 2012. 1948 - Former reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan was born in Manchester. He made nearly 600 appearances for Manchester City, as well as winning nine England caps. He spent ten years on our backroom staff before moving on after the arrival of Rafael Benítez. Finn to Fulham 1998 - Steve Finnan joined Kevin Keegan’s Fulham from Notts County for £600,000. He went on to play 209 times for the Cottagers, netting seven times and winning First and Second Division League titles, to add to the Third Division he had won with County. 2006 - Finn played his hundredth reds League game in our goalless Premiership draw at Middlesbrough as our away day blues continued. Off the mark 1998 - Future red Yossi Benayoun made his senior international debut as Israel lost a friendly 2-0 in Portugal, who included fellow future red Abel Xavier. 2014 – Future red Roberto Firmino struck his first goal for Brazil as they won a friendly 2-1 in Austria. On the same day, Stewart Downing won his first cap as a West Ham United player as Roy Hodgson’s England won 3-1 in Scotland, with future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring one of the goals and Andy Robertson netting his first senior strike and only one as a Hull City player. Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Lazar Marković, Martin Škrtel, Raheem Sterling, future reds Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner, and ex-reds Alberto Aquilani and Javier Mascherano also played for their countries that day. Future red Melkamu Frauendorf played for Germany Under-16’s for the fourth and last time as they beat the Czech Republic 3-0 in Bogen. 2014 - Xherdan Shaqiri played for Switzerland for the last time as a Bayern München player in their 2-2 draw with Poland in a friendly in Wroclaw. Meanwhile, ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić won his nineteenth and final senior cap in Sweden’s 1-0 defeat in France, with future red Loris Karius playing for Germany Under-21’s for the only time as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the Czech Republic in Prague. 2008 – Adam Lallana won his only cap for England Under-21’s, coming off the bench in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic at Bramall Lane. Happy birthday Paddy 1973 - Patrik Berger was born in Prague. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in September 1996 following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, coming off the bench to help us claim the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble, and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer in June 2003. 1981 – Sports Therapist Iván Ortega was born. He joined the reds in the summer of 2009 from Celta de Vigo, but moved on to Chelsea in July 2011. Red centurions 2007 - Rafael Benítez took charge of the reds for the 200th time as we struggled to break down Fulham at Anfield, before Fernando Torres struck a late opener. Steven Gerrard then converted a penalty to secure a 2-0 victory, Rafa’s 115th to date. 1928 – Outside-right Dick Edmed played his hundredth reds game as we won 1-0 at Portsmouth, with forward Bill Salisbury nabbing his first reds goal. Centre-half David Davidson was sent off late in the second half, but we hung on for our first victory at Fratton Park. League Cup ends 1998 - Roy Evans took charge, jointly, of his last ever game as reds boss as we were beaten 3-1 at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur in a Fourth Round League Cup tie. Steffen Iversen and ex-red John Scales put the visitors two up inside twenty minutes, with Allan Nielsen adding a third after an hour. Joe Jordan struck for the Saints, one of just two goals he scored in 23 outings against the reds. 1951 - Outside-right Brian Jackson scored on his debut as we drew another top-flight match 1-1 with Bolton Wanderers, with future reds half-back Johnny Wheeler scoring for the visitors. King Kenny’s day 1979 – Kenny Dalglish’s second goal at Brighton & Hove Albion was his fiftieth for the reds in the League. We won 4-1 with Ray Kennedy and David Johnson also netting. 1971 - He made his Scotland debut while still with Celtic, coming on as a substitute in their 1-0 win over Belgium at Pittodrie. He went on to win a total of 102 caps for his country. On the same day, Emlyn Hughes and Larry Lloyd both played as England were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in another qualifier at Wembley. In and out 1976 – Midfielder Peter Cormack was sold to Bristol City for £50,000. He had signed from Nottingham Forest for a club record £110,000 in July 1972 and won League title and UEFA Cup winners’ medals in his first season, notching a total of 26 goals in 178 reds appearances. 1955 – Centre-half Dick White signed from his hometown club Sc***horpe United for £8,000, their record fee received to date. Fabinho opened the scoring with a long-range strike with Mohamed Salah nodding in a second. Sadio Mané headed in after the break, with Bernardo Silva pulling a goal back late on. 2010 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Wigan Athletic, with Fernando Torres firing us into an early lead. However, Hugo Rodallega levelled after the break with Steven Gerrard striking the crossbar late on. Thumping wins We twice secured convincing First Division wins at Anfield at the beginning of the last century. 1900 - Johnny Walker and Sam Raybould each netted twice as we beat reigning champions Aston Villa 5-1, with Andy McGuigan also scoring. 1906 - Raybould again bagged a brace as Preston North End lost 6-1, with Bill McPherson and Alex Raisbeck also striking twice. Sadio Mané, Divock Origi, Ben Woodburn, future reds Alisson Becker, Wataru Endō and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-red Joe Allen also featured in internationals that day. 2021 – Terence Miles debuted for England Under-18’s as they lost a friendly 3-2 to the Netherlands in Spain. 2001 - Danny Murphy became the 54th Liverpool player to represent the full England team when he debuted in a 1-1 friendly draw with Sweden at Old Trafford, coming on as a substitute for Nicky Butt. Murphy was joined by three fellow reds, as Jamie Carragher played 85 minutes at left-back, Emile Heskey started alongside Kevin Phillips in attack and was replaced by Teddy Sheringham in the 58th minute, with Robbie Fowler coming on for Phillips at the same time. Robbie was winning his 22nd cap, and final one as a reds player. On the same day, future red Christian Poulsen won his first cap for Denmark as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by the Netherlands in Copenhagen. Meanwhile, Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer both appeared for the Czech Republic as they lost 1-0 in a World Cup play-off in Belgium. Births and a death 1991 - Xherdan Shaqiri was born in Gjilan, then part of SFR Yugoslavia, and now in Kosovo. He signed from relegated Stoke City in July 2018 for £12.85m, netting eight times in 63 appearances and helping us to claim our first League title for thirty years and the FIFA Club World Cup, moving on to Olympique Lyonnais for €6m in August 2021. 1983 - Former reserves defender Andrew Nicholas was born in Liverpool. He could not break through to our first team and moved on to Swindon Town in July 2003. 1950 – Bobby Robinson died. He moved to the reds from his hometown club Sunderland for £500 in February 1904. He was top scorer as we won the Second Division title the following season, also helping us claim the First Division championship in 1906. During the latter stages of his time with the reds, he moved into the half-back line but still bagged a total of 65 goals in 271 games, moving on to Tranmere Rovers in May 1913. Anfield testimonials 1993 - A testimonial match was staged for Steve Nicol, who scored in the reds’ 2-1 defeat by a Great Britain XI managed by Terry Venables. 1992 - A match in honour of Bruce Grobbelaar was played, with the game against Everton ending in a 2-2 draw, with David Burrows and Ronnie Rosenthal on target and Bruce missing a penalty! A goalscoring debut 1914 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam scored on his reds bow, although he could not prevent us succumbing to a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea. 1896 – Willie Michael scored his first reds goal as we beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 at Anfield, with Malcolm McVean and Harry Bradshaw also scoring. New and old signings 1894 - Scottish half-back John McLean signed from Greenock Volunteers. He made 29 appearances without scoring before joining Grimsby Town in June 1897. 1948 - Albert Stubbins re-signed with the reds following a dispute with the club who had refused his request to train during the week back in his native Newcastle. He struck a total of 83 goals in 178 reds games in total. 2022 – Midfielder James McConnell signed a new contract. He signed from Sunderland as an Under-15, first turning pro in September 2021. Debutants galore 1959 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin and centre-half John Nicholson both played their only reds games as we were held to a 2-2 Second Division draw at Anfield by Brighton & Hove Albion. Alan A’Court scored with Jimmy Melia having a late penalty saved by Brighton keeper Dave Hollins, before bagging a last-minute equaliser. 1931 – John Charlton and wing-half Alastair Henderson both made their reds bows as we were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at home by West Ham United. Gordon Gunson and Dave Wright netted our goals, with Bob Done having a spot-kick saved by keeper Ted Hufton. 1970 – Ian Rush attended his first reds game, shortly before his ninth birthday, although he was actually supporting the home side as Tottenham Hotspur won 1-0 at White Hart Lane, thanks to a Martin Peters goal, one of his fourteen past us. Five for Jack 1904 - Jack Parkinson scored five goals as we thumped Burnley 7-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield, with Bobby Robinson and Arthur Goddard also netting. Internationals on target 2020 – Roberto Firmino bagged a brace as Brazil thrashed Bolivia 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in São Paulo. Xherdan Shaqiri and ex-reds Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho also played for their countries that day. 2019 – Roberto Firmino netted for Brazil as they drew 1-1 with Senegal in Singapore, with future reds Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino both scoring for Japan as they thumped Mongolia 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Saitama, with this being Endō’s first senior goal for his country and only one as a Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging player. Sammy in charge 2000 - Sammy Lee took charge of England Under-21’s for the first time, leading them to a 2-2 draw in Finland, with future red Daniel Sjölund on the scoresheet in this European Championships qualifier. On the same day, future red Milan Baroš scored for the Czech Republic Under-21’s in their 1-0 win in Malta, while Richie Partridge played for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Estonia 1-0 in Kilkenny. Happy birthday Sami 1973 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was born in Helsinki. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management. Other reds celebrating 1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He was at the Academy since the age of six, striking sixteen times in 273 senior appearances across his first seven seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 1890 – Centre-half Walter Wadsworth was born in Bootle. The hard man was signed from Ormskirk in April 1912, going on to score eight goals in 242 reds games, some alongside his brother Harold at outside-right as he helped us to claim back-to-back League titles in 1922 and 1923. 1990 – Uruguayan centre-half Sebastián Coates was born in Montevideo. He signed from Nacional for £7m in August 2011, scoring twice in 24 games before joining Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after a season there on loan. He played for Uruguay Under-20’s on his nineteenth birthday as they were beaten 3-1 by Brazil in their World Cup Finals Round of Sixteen encounter in Egypt. 1995 – Reserves centre-back Lloyd Jones was born. He signed from his hometown club Plymouth Argyle for £150,000 in June 2011, turning pro in May 2013 after sitting on the bench in our Premiership visit to Fulham earlier that month. We went on to claim our third League title that season. 1972 - We hosted another derby fixture when Peter Cormack headed in the only goal of the game. Bill Shankly was presented with the Bell’s Manager of the Month awards for September and the previous April before the match. 1931 – We beat Everton 3-2 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Goodison, with Bob Done converting a penalty and Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace. Other birthdays 1894 - Left-half Tom Bromilow was born in Liverpool. He signed professional terms in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England. 1920 - Centre-half Allenby Chilton was born in South Hylton, County Durham. He signed for the reds as an amateur in summer 1938, before moving to Manchester United that November, without making a senior reds appearance. He won the first of his two England caps on his thirtieth birthday in a 4-1 British International Championships win in Northern Ireland. 1964 - Paul Stewart was born in Manchester. He was one of Graeme Souness’s failed buys, arriving from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m in July 1992, scoring three times in 42 uninspiring appearances before leaving for free for Sunderland in March 1996 after a successful loan spell. Most recently 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by champions Manchester City, with Riyad Mahrez blasting a late spot kick over the bar for the visitors. Thumping the Canaries 1978 – We won 4-1 at Norwich City with Steve Heighway bagging a brace inside the first ten minutes. David Johnson and Jimmy Case struck before John Ryan converted a late penalty for the home side. International beginnings and end 2020 – Curtis Jones and Rhys Williams both debuted for England Under-21’s in their 3-3 European Championships qualifier in Andorra. Arthur never made our first team in peacetime, but did net twelve times in eleven wartime games for us. Last strikes 1911 – Centre-half Jimmy Harrop scored his fourth and last reds goal as we lost 2-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Walter Aitkenhead netted one of his four goals past us, with Johnny Orr bagging one of his five strikes against the reds. 1933 – Chelsea lost 3-0 at Anfield with forward Dave Wright bagging his 35th and last goal for the club. Another rare excursion up front 1899 - Centre-back Alex Raisbeck played his second and final match at centre-forward, as we lost 2-0 at home to Derby County thanks to a Steve Bloomer brace, two of his fourteen goals against us, with forward Abe Foxall playing his only reds game. Mixed derby fortunes 1959 - We won the first leg of our Floodlight Challenge Cup 3-0 against the Blues at Goodison Park, thanks to a Roger Hunt brace and goal from Johnny Wheeler. We lost the Anfield return 2-0 three weeks later to claim the trophy for the second of three times. 1939 - Worse occurred when we lost a friendly 4-1 at Anfield with Phil Taylor bagging our consolation. Thumping Anfield wins 1895 - We trounced Crewe Alexandra 6-1 in a Second Division encounter with George Allan, Fred Geary and Jimmy Ross all netting twice each, with these being Geary’s first reds strikes. 1981 - Ian Rush struck his first two reds goals in domestic competition as we beat Third Division Exeter City 5-0 in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie, with Kenny Dalglish reaching a century of reds goals and Terry McDermott and Ronnie Whelan also on target. A Croatian legend honoured 2002 - Igor Bišcan played in Zagreb for a Croatia 1998 side as they lost 2-1 to a Rest Of The World XI in Zvonimir Boban’s testimonial. Tennis player Goran Ivanisevic scored for the Croatia team, while Jean-Pierre Papin and Leonardo netted the other goals. Youngsters in action 1997 - Future red Milan Baroš scored on his debut for the Czech Republic Under-16’s as they beat Bavaria 3-0 in a friendly in Tachov. 2005 - Besian Idrizaj made his debut for Austria Under-21’s, appearing in their 2-1 defeat of Scott Carson’s England at Elland Road, with future red James Milner also featuring. Meanwhile, Anthony Le Tallec scored in his fourth consecutive Under-21’s game, grabbing a treble with Florent Sinama-Pongolle also playing in France’s 3-0 win in another qualifier in Switzerland. Ramon Calliste was also in international action that day. 2010 – Danny Wilson played as Scotland Under-21’s lost the first leg of their European Championships Play-off 2-1 in Iceland. Meanwhile, Lucas featured as the senior Brazil side beat Iran 3-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi, with Péter Gulácsi also in international action. 2015 – Future red Marko Grujić featured for Serbia Under-21’s as they thumped Andorra 5-0 in a European Championships qualifying win in Novi Sad, with future red Javier Manquillo also playing at this level. Other internationals on target 2016 - Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first two goals for England Under-19's, with one coming from the spot in their 3-2 friendly win in Croatia. On the same day, Ovie Ejaria and future red Dominic Solanke both debuted for England Under-20’s as they beat Germany 3-1 in a friendly in Huddersfield, with Marko Grujić also in international action. 2011 – Luis Suárez netted while reaching half a century of caps in Uruguay’s 4-2 World Cup qualifying defeat of Bolivia in Montevideo, with ex-red Raul Meireles also reaching that milestone in Portugal’s 5-3 defeat of Iceland in Porto. Ex-red Xabi Alonso struck as Spain won a Euro 2012 qualifier 2-0 in the Czech Republic, while Adam Morgan was on target for England Under-19’s in their 1-0 defeat of Portugal in the Limoges Tournament. Djibril Cissé won his first cap as a Lazio player, with Christian Poulsen playing his first game for Denmark since joining Évian Thonon Gaillard. On the same day, Steve Finnan and future red Robbie Keane played for Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland, with Daniel Agger, Luis García, Sami Hyypiä, Dirk Kuyt, John Arne Riise, future reds Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin and ex-red Jari Litmanen also featuring in qualifiers, with ex-red Rigobert Song also in international action and Roy Hodgson taking charge of Finland. Bells in charge 2006 - Craig Bellamy captained Wales for the first time, with ex-red Paul Jones winning his fiftieth cap as John Toshack’s Wales were trounced 5-1 by Slovakia in Cardiff. Gareth Bale became Wales’ youngest ever senior goalscorer, aged just seventeen years and 83 days. On the same day, the record attendance for a home England international away from Wembley Stadium was set as 72,062 saw England held to a goalless draw by FYR Macedonia in another qualifier at Old Trafford. Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and future red Stewart Downing all played. Also in international action that day were Adam Hammill, Craig Lindfield, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf and future reds Lucas Leiva, Nikolay Mihaylov and Christian Poulsen. Recent reds milestones 2007 - Jamie Carragher’s restaurant Café Sports England on Stanley Street in Liverpool opened. Guests at the VIP opening night included Daniel Agger, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and ex-reds Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Michael Owen and Phil Thompson. Unfortunately, the business went bust in October 2013. 2011 - Martin Škrtel became a father to Matteo. Other reds games 1975 – Jimmy Case scored as Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw with Burnley in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, although we lost the second leg at Turf Moor. 1964 – We beat Sheffield United 3-1 in L4. Roger Hunt struck either side of the first of Alan Burchenall’s four goals against the reds before the break. Hunt netted again in the second half, with Bobby Graham also on the scoresheet. On the move 2009 - Steve Staunton took over as Manager of Darlington. He was sacked in March 2010 with the Quakers at the bottom of the League and facing relegation to the Conference. He had won just four of his 23 League matches in charge. 2008 - Joe Allen joined Wrexham on loan from Swansea City, netting once in just two outings for the Dragons. 1898 – Inside-forward Frank Becton moved on to Sheffield United. The England international had signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200 in March 1895, notching 42 times in 86 reds games. 2022 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper signed a new contract as Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He had taken them from bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season but was sacked in December 2023 after leading them to 42 victories in 108 games in charge. -
In rides Crazy Horse 1947 - Emlyn Hughes was born in Barrow-in-Furness. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield after signing from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. God’s rapid-fire hat-trick 1994 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick in a five-minute first-half spell as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield, in front of just 30,017 in the first game after the Kop became all seated. 1999 - He also struck as we again beat the Gunners 2-0 at Anfield, with Patrik Berger also on the scoresheet as Dominic Matteo reached a century of League outings for the reds. 1967 - We also played them, going down 2-0 at Highbury. Jon Sammels scored with Tony Hateley putting through his own net. On the way in 2017 – Midfielder Naby Keïta agreed to sign from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. the following July for £52.75m. He struck eleven times in 129 outings for the reds as he struggled with a succession of injuries, but he managed to help us claim the League title, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before departing for SV Werder Bremen in June 2023. Double Latin debutants 2007 - Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva and Argentine winger Sebastián Leto both made their reds bows as we thumped Toulouse 4-0 in the second leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield, to progress 5-0 on aggregate. Peter Crouch and skipper Sami Hyypiä both netted before Dirk Kuyt added a late brace as we secured our fiftieth home win in Europe’s premier competition. Before the match, the Z-Cars theme was played in tribute to the recently-murdered Rhys Jones, whose parents and brother were present on the touchline in their Everton shirts, on a day when the city of Liverpool celebrated its 800th birthday. Most recently 2021 – Kai Havertz headed Chelsea ahead at Anfield, but Mohamed Salah equalised from the spot on the stroke of half time, with Reece James sent off for handling in the area. The doc off the mark 1976 – We lost 2-1 at Birmingham City, with David Johnson nabbing his first reds goal. Double centurion 1993 - Ian Rush grabbed his 200th League goal as we beat Leeds United 2-0 at Anfield in the Premiership. Jan Mølby netted the other as Mike Marsh played his 101st and final reds game. Dirk the best of Dutch 2006 - Dirk Kuyt was named Dutch Player of the Year, shortly after his £9m move from Feyenoord to Anfield. He had been made their skipper that season, as he scored 25 times in 38 games in all competitions. Javier the champion 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano helped Argentina to claim Olympic gold as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in the Final in Athens. Paraguay had both Emilio Martínez and Diego Figueredo sent off. The new Kemlyn 1963 - We played in front of the new Kemlyn Road cantilever stand for the first time, while part of the Anfield Road terracing was unavailable due to structural work. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest, with Forest’s Bob McKinlay scoring for the reds, the fiftieth time we had benefited from an own goal to date in the League. Bruce at last 1984 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his final senior international cap as Zimbabwe lost 1-0 in the first leg of a World Cup qualifier in Egypt. Other trebles 1926 - Gordon Hodgson opened the scoring before Dick Forshaw bagged a treble against Manchester United for the second successive season, as we won 4-2 in our season opener at Anfield, with winger Dick Edmed making his reds bow. Frank McPherson bagged a brace for the visitors. 1937 - George Mills scored a hat-trick for Chelsea in their 6-1 thumping of the reds as we started the season badly, the last of his four goals past us. Ted Harston netted our consolation on his reds debut, with left-back Barney Ramsden also making his reds bow. Harry Burgess bagged one of his nine strikes past the reds, with Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Argue also on target. 1943 - Jack Balmer bagged three as we beat Manchester City 4-1 in our opening Wartime League fixture of the season with Cyril Done also on target. 1920 - We also started a new campaign against City, with Tom Miller nabbing a brace and Walter Wadsworth scoring his first reds goal in our 4-2 Anfield victory. Donald McKinlay also struck, with Tommy Browell bagging one of his seven goals against us and Ernest Goodwin also netting. Other debutants 2002 - Salif Diao made his official reds bow in our 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers, with Rovers substitute Corrado Grabbi nabbing a late equaliser after Danny Murphy and John Arne Riise had put us in front, following David Dunn’s opener. 1990 - Roy Keane made his debut in English football as Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th League game for the reds. Thumping the Mackems 1948 – Billy Watkinson netted his second and last goal for the club with Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer also scoring as we beat Sunderland 4-0 at Anfield. Other birthday boys 1929 - Forward John Evans was born in Tilbury in Essex. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957, including a goal on his 25th birthday as we lost 3-2 in a Second Division fixture at Derby County, with Louis Bimpson also on target. Jimmy Dunn bagged the last of his four goals against the reds, with Geoff Barrowcliffe and Tommy Powell also scoring. 1993 – Academy defender Jakub Sokolík was born in Ostrava in the Czech Republic. He joined the reds in 2009, signing on as a professional four years later. He was released at the end of the 2013/14 season, signing on with Yeovil Town in June 2014. Rob bows out 1999 - Rob Jones was released by West Ham United, just six weeks after leaving Anfield for one final throw of the dice. He had played 243 times for the reds, famously without notching a goal, before suffering a succession of back problems. In charge 2004 - Ian Rush was appointed Manager of Chester City. He only led them to fourteen victories in 41 games in his one season in charge. 1999 - Steve Clarke took over as Caretaker Manager of Newcastle United after Ruud Gullit’s resignation, although he only took charge of one game, a 5-1 thumping at Manchester United. Moving on 2014 – Left-back Jack Robinson was sold to Queens Park Rangers after eleven senior games since making his bow as the reds’ then youngest ever player in May 2010, moving on the same day on loan to Huddersfield Town. 2020 – Ovie Ejaria was sold to Reading after two successful loan spells. On the same day, keeper Shamal George signed for Colchester United having been released by the reds. 2022 – Ex-red loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Fatih Karagümrük on a free transfer from Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü, netting once in seven outings while with his fourth Turkish club. Crossing the border 1987 - Reserves centre-forward Alan Irvine was sold to Dundee United for £100,000 after just four appearances from off the bench. He failed to score in seven League games before joining Shrewsbury Town. 1994 - Ex-red Gary Gillespie rejoined Coventry City from Celtic on a free transfer. He could only make four appearances in his second, three-season spell at Highfield Road. Danny on target 2007 – Future reds centre-back Danny Wilson captained and scored for Scotland Under-17's for the only time, while winning the first of his four caps at this level in their 3-1 tournament defeat by Austria in Villach. In trouble 2019 - Dean Saunders was jailed for ten weeks for refusing to provide a roadside breath test, although he was freed after one day pending an appeal, which he later won. Also in international action 1991 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to the USSR in Oslo. 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in Walsall. -
Fijne Verjaardag 1991 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk was born in Breda. He arrived from Southampton for a club record £75m in January 2018, a world record fee for a defender. He has netted nineteen goals in 222 outings across his first six seasons, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. Robbie appears 1980 - Robbie Keane was born in Dublin. He signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £19.3m in July 2008, but only netted seven times in 28 games before making the return journey for an initial £15m fee the following January. 1971 - John Achterberg was born in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was appointed reserves goalkeeping coach at Melwood in June 2009 after over a decade as player and coach with Tranmere Rovers, moving up to the first team two years later. Reds in mourning 2001 - Tom Saunders died. The former Youth Development Officer and long-standing Director also spent many years as a European ‘spy’ for the club, checking out upcoming opponents. He also managed the England Schoolboys and Under-18’s during his career and was well loved at Anfield. 2013 – Centre-forward Dave Hickson died. He made the controversial switch across Stanley Park to join the reds for £12,000 in November 1959, putting an extra 15,000 on the gate for his debut, with one fan running on to kiss him on the cheek! He scored 38 times in his 67 reds games before joining Aston Villa in July 1961. Yet another win 2020 – We won 3-1 behind closed doors at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson putting us two up inside the opening eight minutes. Leandro Trossard pulled a goal back before the break, the first of his five goals past us to date, but Salah headed in a second to secure our thirtieth League win of the season, from just 34 games. Debuting over the water 2016 - Midfielder Ovie Ejaria, keeper Loris Karius, winger Sadio Mané, centre-back Joël Matip and forward Ben Woodburn all played their first reds games as Danny Ings notched the only goal of our friendly at Tranmere Rovers. Milanese arrival 2010 - Milan Jovanović signed on a free transfer from Standard de Liège. He failed to establish himself in the first team, notching just twice in eighteen outings before moving back to Belgium to sign for RSC Anderlecht in August 2011. Masch on target again 2007 - Javier Mascherano struck for Argentina, having scored his first senior international goal just three days earlier. He was part of a side that beat Peru 4-0 in Venezuela to reach the Copa América Semi-finals. On the same day, Harry Kewell reached a quarter of a century of caps for Australia in their 1-1 AFC Asian Cup draw with Oman in Bangkok. 2011 –Luis Suárez and future red Sebastián Coates both played for Uruguay as they drew 1-1 with Chile in a Copa América group game in Argentina. New signings 2016 – Reds boss Jürgen Klopp and Assistant Managers Peter Krawietz and Željko Buvač all signed new contracts. Buvač left the club in April 2018, with Klopp and Krawietz remaining at Anfield. 2005 - Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both signed new four-year contracts. Our captain moved on to LA Galaxy this summer, having played 710 senior games, but Carragher retired a year ago after 737 reds appearances in total. 2009 – Gerrard renewed his contract again, this time until 2013, which was of course further renewed. 2008 - Midfielder Zsolt Poloskei signed on loan from MTK Hungária. He failed to appear for the reserves in his first season due to injury, renewing his loan spell for a second campaign when once again he was ruled out for most of the campaign. He has since returned to Hungary. 2011 – Right-back Jon Flanagan signed a new contract until 2015, which was subsequently extended. He played 51 senior reds games, notching once, before being released in June 2018. 1996 – Defender Stephen Wright signed for the reds. He netted once in 21 reds appearances before moving to Sunderland for £3m in August 2002, for whom he turned out on 105 occasions. Double departure 2004 - Two of the coaching staff left the club. Sammy Lee took up a position as a full-time National Coach at the FA, with goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan also moving on, ending up at West Bromwich Albion. Happy birthdays 1988 - Catalan centre-back Miki Roqué was born in Tremp. He was part of the victorious FA Youth Cup winning side in 2005 and made his senior debut in our Champions League defeat at Galatasaray in December 2006. He was released in June 2009 after spending much of his time out on loan, sadly dying in June 2012, aged just 23. 1980 - Patrice Luzi was born in Ajaccio. He signed on a free transfer from Monaco in July 2002, but made just one first-team appearance, as a substitute for the injured Jerzy Dudek in our long overdue League win at Chelsea in January 2004, leaving the club after three years in the reserves. Six unveiled 1999 - Six new signings were presented to the press as Gérard Houllier’s revolution took shape - Titi Camara, Stéphane Henchoz, Sami Hyypiä, Erik Meijer, Vladimír Šmicer and Sander Westerveld. Le Boss said, “Some have turned down the chance of playing in the Champions League, others the UEFA Cup. Some of them rejected higher profile clubs than we are at the moment. We are very happy they accepted the challenge.” 2003 - Steve Finnan, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle all reported for the start of pre-season training for the first time. Another new arrival at Anfield was coach Christian Damiano, who joined from Fulham. Maxi the champion 2001 – Future red Maxi Rodríguez netted the second as Argentina Under-20’s beat Ghana 2-0 in the Final of the World Championships in Buenos Aires. Red arrivals 1996 - Defender Stephen Wright joined the Academy. He went on to play 21 first-team games before signing for Sunderland for £3m in August 2002. 2013 - Andy Hughes started work as the club’s Chief Financial Officer. Other moves 2021 – Forwards Joe Hardy and Liam Millar both left the reds, with both having made one senior appearance in the FA Cup. Hardy joined Accrington Stanley while Millar moved to Basel for a reported £1.3m, netting ten times in 44 games in his first season in Switzerland. On the same day, ex-reds centre-half Mikel San José signed for Sociedad Deportiva Amorebieta, scoring once in 27 outings in his first campaign back in Spain. 2005 - Craig Bellamy signed for Blackburn Rovers from Newcastle United for £5m. He bagged seventeen goals in 32 games while at Ewood Park, before the reds activated the £6m get-out clause in his contract. 2022 – Bellamy was appointed Assistant Manager of Burnley under Vincent Kompany. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Joe Allen re-signed for Swansea City on a two-year deal. 2019 – Midfielder Jordan Rossiter joined Fleetwood Town on loan from Rangers, playing nineteen times for the Fishermen. On the same day, forward David Amoo signed for Port Vale on a free transfer from Cambridge United. He scored five times in 37 games in his first campaign with Vale. 2013 – Winger Paul Anderson joined Ipswich Town from Bristol City in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, netting five times in 33 outings for the Tractor boys. 1999 - Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Manchester City from Wimbledon for £1m. He netted eleven times in 77 games whilst at Maine Road and is now on Ipswich Town’s coaching staff. 1993 - Future loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Sunderland on a free transfer from Luton Town. He made 108 appearances for the Wearsiders. He is now coaching at Watford, having made 288 appearances for the Hornets. Ablett in charge 2009 - Gary Ablett was appointed Manager of Stockport County, having recently been sacked as our reserves boss. He left his role at Edgeley Park in June 2010 by mutual consent, following a takeover of the club, having led them to relegation from League One. Stan out of pocket 2002 - A Spanish court ruled that Stan Collymore was in breach of his contract when he had quit Real Oviedo to return to England, walking out just months into a four-year contract. He was ordered to pay the Spanish club £200,000 compensation. Nando the dad 2009 - Fernando Torres became a father to Nora when his wife Olalla gave birth at the Hospital La Rosaleda Compostelan in Santiago de Compostela. -
Happy birthday Saint 1938 - Ian St. John was born in Motherwell. He joined from his hometown club in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final and also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. 1988 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi was born in Kumasi in Ghana. He appeared in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 2006 but spent most of his time out on loan. He was released in June 2009 and was last seen playing for Melaka United in Malaysia. 1936 – Left-winger Ron Smith was born in Liverpool. He signed amateur terms in 1955, turning professional two years later. However, he moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1959, having failed to break through to the first team. In comes Cloughie 1993 - Nigel Clough signed from Nottingham Forest for £2,275,000. He was far less successful than expected, scoring just nine times in his 44 reds appearances, despite a bright start of four goals in his first four games. His finest hour probably came when he struck twice to help us come from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Manchester United at Anfield in January 1994. He left Anfield for Manchester City in January 1996 for £1.5m. 1956 – Scottish keeper Tommy Younger signed from Hibernian for £9,000. He made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final to level the match again. McCall’s achievement was then matched by Rushie who won us the cup with his 23rd FA Cup goal. The departure of a legend 1996 - Ian Rush signed for Leeds United on a free transfer, after his 346 strikes in 660 games had helped shoot us to countless honours. However, he bagged just three goals in 43 games for Leeds. He became reds skipper in 1928, and also wrote a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 2002 – Defender David Raven signed as a professional. He made four first-team appearances but left Anfield to sign for Carlisle United in July 2006. Jack’s treble 1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat a Baltimore All Stars side 9-2, with Ken Brierley netting a brace and Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Albert Stubbins all also on the scoresheet. 1953 - We played another friendly in the USA, beating a New England Select 4-0 in Fall River, thanks to two goals from Mervyn Jones and strikes from Jack Smith and Don Welsh. A special day for Emlyn 1972 - Emlyn Hughes nabbed his only full international goal as England beat Wales 3-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff, up against John Toshack. 1980 - He played in the same tournament, no longer as a red, as England drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Wembley, as he captained them for the last time. This was his 23rd full international as skipper, and 61st in total. David Johnson, Terry McDermott and future red coach Joe Corrigan all also featured. Also on the move 1955 – Full-back Steve Parr was released by the reds, then joining Exeter City. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. 2004 - Reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan left Anfield to join Chester City on a free transfer, making 85 appearances in two spells with the Blues. This third game ended 2-2 after extra time, with Ian St. John and Roger Hunt on target. That meant that the tie was decided on a coin toss. Derby joy 1945 - Billy Liddell grabbed the only goal of the game as we beat Everton at Anfield in a Wartime League game that also counted towards the Wartime League Cup. Inter-war tonkings 1928 - We were thumped 4-0 at Hillsborough by The Wednesday. Mark Hooper struck the first of his eight goals past us, with Ellis Rimmer netting the first of his five, as Jimmy Seed and Jimmy Trotter also scored. 1934 - We went down 5-1 at Leeds United, with Gordon Hodgson netting in his fourth consecutive League game, in which time he had scored nine times, in what was his 300th League game for the reds. Centre-forward Harold Barton was playing his 109th and final reds game. He only struck five times in 39 reds games before joining Leeds City in May 1905. 1958 – Left-back Phil Ferns signed as a professional, having arrived as an amateur the previous September. He struck once in 28 reds games, making enough appearances in 1963/64 to claim a League title medal but moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in August 1965. 1994 - Mark Walters joined First Division Stoke City on loan. Pacheco struck twice in six outings as they were promoted to the top flight, while Jones turned out on seven occasions for the Rams. On the same day, Pacheco played for Spain Under-21’s for the first time in their 3-2 friendly defeat to France in Reims. Xabi from his own half 2006 - Jan Kromkamp made his reds bow in a thrilling FA Cup Third Round tie at Luton Town. We took the lead through Steven Gerrard before falling 3-1 behind with Djibril Cissé having a penalty saved with the score at 2-1. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record, while his second was his ninth and last for the club. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. Scott Carson made his ninth and final reds appearance in this game. 1939 - We also faced the Hatters at the same stage of the Cup with left-winger George Paterson grabbing his only reds goal in a 3-0 Anfield victory. At last at the Bridge 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou’s first League goal handed us our first win at Stamford Bridge for fifteen years, as we beat Chelsea 1-0 despite the absence of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. El-Hadji Diouf was unjustly sent off, with his red card later rescinded, and Jerzy Dudek went off injured to be replaced by debutant Patrice Luzi for the last quarter of an hour, becoming the 52nd senior keeper in our history, and only the fourth man to never concede a goal in his entire reds career between the sticks, although this was his only senior outing. 1978 - We lost at Stamford Bridge, being knocked out of the FA Cup at the Third Round stage, with Joey Jones playing his hundredth and last game against his future employers. Management moves 2000 - Steve McMahon was appointed Blackpool Manager, with Gary Ablett arriving at the club on non-contract terms on the same day. He remained in charge of the Seasiders until June 2004, leading them to promotion via the play-offs in his first full season. He signed on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in July 2016, bagging eleven goals in 187 games for the reds across his first seven seasons, so far helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. Into the Champions League 2001 - We played our first ever game in the new format of the UEFA Champions League, registering our record equal away win in Europe to date as we thumped Finnish side Haka 5-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Michael Owen, our first away from home in Europe, and strikes from Emile Heskey and Sami Hyypiä. Stevie the best 2013 - Steven Gerrard came first in the club’s second ‘100 Players Who Shook The Kop’ poll, beating Kenny Dalglish, who had taken the honour the first time around in October 2006. Forward signings 1983 – Forward Michael Robinson signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. Farewell Nessie 2002 - Agnes ‘Nessie’ Shankly’s funeral was held in Liverpool. She had been Bill Shankly’s wife throughout his career and was well-loved by many of the players and staff at Anfield. Wembley disappointment 1992 - Paul Stewart made his first-class debut for the reds as we lost 4-3 to Leeds United in the FA Charity Shield at Wembley, thanks to an Eric Cantona hat-trick, the first of his five goals past us, with Tony Dorigo also on target. Kevin Lewis had a penalty saved by United keeper Dave Hollins, while centre-half Dick White played his 200th game for the club. Dirk off the mark 2006 - Dirk Kuyt grabbed his first reds goal, and 150th career strike to date, which was also our fiftieth Premier League strike against Newcastle United. We won 2-0 at Anfield, with Luis García playing his hundredth reds game. Xabi Alonso spectacularly scored from inside his own half, the second time he had managed that feat for the reds that year. Quick-fire Billy 1958 - Billy Liddell scored after sixteen seconds, with Ronnie Moran putting through his own net to level the score at Bristol City in our Second Division meeting. He added another in the second half, with wing-half Bobby Campbell grabbing the first of his two reds goals as we won 3-1. This was Liddell’s third brace in six games. Barney Rubble departs 1985 - Left-back Alan Kennedy was sold to Sunderland for £100,000. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, netting twenty times in 359 appearances. Off the mark 2015 – Substitute Danny Ings bagged his first reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City, with Lucas Leiva playing his 200th League game for the club. Unfortunately, Russell Martin capitalised on a Simon Mignolet error to equalise. Happy birthdays 1922 - Left-back Eddie Spicer was born in Garston, Liverpool. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving with the Royal Marines in the Second World War, going on to score twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and playing in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 1895 - Full-back Tommy Lucas was born in St. Helens. He signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. He moved on to Clapton Orient in July 1933. 2003 – Midfielder James Balagizi was born in Manchester. He signed pro terms in September 2020, having joined as an Under-11 from Manchester City. A wise move 2012 – Defender Andre Wisdom netted his only goal for the club on his reds bow as we won our UEFA Europa League group game 5-3 at BSC Young Boys, with winger Oussama Assaidi and midfielder Suso also debuting. Juhani Ojala scored an own goal after just three minutes, with Wisdom nodding us back in front after an equaliser from Raphael Nuzzolo. Ojala and then Gonzalo Zárate struck after the break to turn the game around, before Sebastián Coates headed us level, with substitute Jonjo Shelvey bagging a brace to secure victory. Thiago’s bow 2020 - Thiago Alcântara debuted as we won 2-0 behind closed doors at Chelsea, with Andreas Christensen sent off for the home side on the stroke of half time. Happy birthday Jerome 1996 – Forward Jerome Sinclair was born in Birmingham. He arrived from West Bromwich Albion’s Academy aged fourteen in the summer of 2011, becoming our youngest ever player in September 2012, aged sixteen years and six days, when he featured in a League Cup Third Round tie at his old club. He eventually struck once in five senior appearances before he moved to Watford for £4m in June 2016. Out-foxed again 2003 - Michael Owen netted from the spot before Emile Heskey struck the winner against his old club Leicester City at Anfield for the third consecutive season as we won 2-1, with Marcus Bent bagging a very late consolation for the visitors. Disappointment at The Dell 1986 - Kevin MacDonald broke his leg shortly after coming on as a substitute as we lost 2-1 at Southampton, with Steve McMahon equalising after David Armstrong opened the scoring with the last of his four goals against the reds. However, Glenn Cockerill struck the winner for the Saints. 1980 - Graeme Souness and David Fairclough netted as we drew 2-2, with Phil Neal missing a penalty. Three times against the Potters 2008 - We were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard having a legitimate second-minute free-kick strike ruled out. 1969 - We saw off the Potters 3-1 at home, with Emlyn Hughes on target in his hundredth League game for the reds. Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan also struck in our tenth consecutive League defeat of Stoke in what was Bill Shankly’s 500th game in charge of the reds. 1902 - Leigh Roose struck through the wrong net in the second minute as were held to a 1-1 top-flight draw by Stoke in L4. Beattie beaten 1983 - Andy Beattie died, aged seventy. He guested for the reds at full-back during the Second World War, and later spent some time on our backroom staff. He managed a host of clubs as well as the Scotland national side, working with Bill Shankly at Huddersfield Town, having played alongside him at Preston North End. Young Englanders 1983 - Future red Paul Walsh grabbed a brace as England Under-21’s beat their Danish counterparts 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Carrow Road. Ex-red Dave Watson and future red Mark Walters both made their debuts in this game, while fellow future red Mark Wright also played. 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan and David Raven both played for their countries at Under-19’s level in European Championships qualifiers, with the latter making his debut for England at this level. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they beat Japan 1-0 in an Olympics match in Brisbane. Only cap 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena won his only cap in Spain’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Poland in A Coruña. On the move 2013 – Argentine ex-reserves midfielder Gerardo Bruna signed for Spanish Segunda División B side S.D. Huesca, netting once in seventeen outings during his one season there. 2016 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was sacked as Head Coach of Valencia, having only been in charge for three months. 2021 – Centre-half Terence Miles, the nephew of former Academy forward John Miles, turned pro with the reds, having arrived at Under-7’s level. Last-gasp heartache 1989 - Having already claimed the FA Cup in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, we only had to avoid defeat at home to Arsenal by two clear goals or more to clinch our second double in four seasons. The Gunners took the lead in the second half when Alan Smith was judged to have headed in from an indirect free-kick, one of his nine goals against the reds. We held on until stoppage time, when Michael Thomas burst through to grab the decisive, heart-breaking second and take the title back to Highbury for the first time since 1971. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th League game for the club. A Busby birthday 1909 - Right-half Sir Matt Busby was born on this day in Orbiston, Lanarkshire. He joined the reds from Manchester City for £8,000 in March 1936, making 122 appearances for us, many as captain, notching three times. He was appointed as coach and Assistant Manager to George Kay at Anfield in May 1944, but he was released by the club the following February after disagreements with the board, taking over as Manager of Manchester United a few days later. 1991 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga was born in Meaux, France. He signed from Paris St. Germain in July 2009 but was sold to Stade Rennais for £1m two years later, having failed to break through to the first team. 1896 – Scottish left-back James Penman was born in Kelty, Fife. He signed from Glasgow Ashfield in 1919, but only played once before returning to his homeland to sign for Lochgelly United in 1921. Final despair 2018 – We lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv, as keeper Loris Karius had a personal nightmare in his 49th and final game for the club, with Mohamed Salah being forced off with injury after just half an hour. Karim Benzema scored one of his seven goals past us shortly after half time, but Sadio Mané levelled just four minutes later. However, Gareth Bale then struck twice to secure the trophy for the Spanish side for a record thirteenth time. Emre Can came off the bench to make his 167th and last appearance for the reds. A Philly dozen 1946 - We trounced a Philadelphia Select of American League side 12-0 in a friendly in the Yellow Jacket Stadium. Cyril Done struck four times, with Jack Balmer bagging a hat-trick and Phil Taylor and Willie Fagan both netting braces, and Bob Priday rounding out the scoring. Opening a new stadium 1978 - We played a game to commemorate the opening of the new Al Nasr Stadium in the United Arab Emirates, beating Al Nasr Club 5-0. Our scorers were fairly unusual, with substitute Colin Irwin and Ray Kennedy both bagging braces, and Alan Hansen also on target. 1980 - We returned to the Middle East to beat a Bahrain XI 2-1 on the Three Fives Gulf Football Tour. This time, Howard Gayle and Graeme Souness got on the scoresheet. Signing on 2014 - Brendan Rodgers signed a new contract, having just led the reds to within a whisker of the League title. However, the team regressed and he was sacked in October 2015. 2015 - Centre-half Kolo Touré signed a new contract, notching just once in 71 reds games before moving on to join Rodgers at Celtic in July 2016 after this deal expired. Charnock on target 1994 - Reserves midfielder Phil Charnock scored his first senior reds goal in our 3-0 defeat of Cape Town Spurs in the United Bank International Soccer Festival in South Africa, with Bruce Grobbelaar appearing for the reds for the final time. Select thumpings 1948 - We beat a New England Select side 6-0 at Fall River, with Willie Fagan and Albert Stubbins both nabbing braces to add to goals from Jack Balmer and Bob Priday. 1914 - We defeated a Denmark Select XI 7-1 in Copenhagen. Fred again 1935 – Fred Howe scored in our 4-2 friendly win at CD Tenerife, so netting in all three of our tour games. Alf Hanson bagged a brace with Tosh Johnson also on target.
